Cruise passenger dies after falling over balcony onto lower deck, spokesperson says

A passenger aboard a Virgin Voyages cruise ship died after falling over their balcony shortly after departure, a spokesperson said.

The ship, Valiant Lady, had left Miami on Sunday for Roatan, Honduras, when the incident occurred.

"On Sunday, shortly after departure there was a medical emergency involving one of our passengers," the cruise line company said in an emailed statement. "This passenger went over their balcony onto a lower deck, and despite receiving immediate medical attention, has passed away."

The passenger, who has not been identified, fell onto another person, Insider reported . The spokesperson for Virgin Voyages said in their statement that the second person was not seriously injured.

The spokesperson declined to release further details, saying it wants to protect the privacy of those involved.

The ship returned to Miami early Monday morning but has since resumed its voyage with slight changes to the itinerary.

Virgin Voyages said it was "deeply saddened" by what happened. "Our hearts and thoughts are with this person's loved ones," the statement said.

On Sunday when the incident occurred, the ship had left Miami and was headed to Roatán, Honduras.

The ship immediately returned to Miami but has since continued its voyage with slight changes to its itinerary.

Virgin Voyages said it was “deeply saddened” by the incident.

“Our hearts and thoughts are with this person’s loved ones,” the company said in a statement.

The name of the woman who died has not been released.

The circumstances surrounding the fall are under investigation.

A 20-year-old man jumped off the Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas cruise on Thursday morning while vacationing with his family.

The passenger, whose identity has not been revealed, jumped overboard at about 4 a.m. and has been missing since.

The US Coast Guard said on X on Thursday that its crews were "searching for a 20-year-old man who went overboard from the Liberty of the Seas cruise ship near The Bahamas.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Business Insider in a statement: "Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time."

Passengers on the Liberty of the Seas ship described the tragedy as a "spur-of-the-moment decision."

Passenger Bryan Sims told the New York Post that the missing passenger was "pretty drunk" and that they had hung out in the hot tub until 3:30 a.m.

Sims said that when they left the hot tub, they encountered the drunk passenger's father while approaching the elevators.

"His dad was fussing at him for being drunk," said Sims.

The unidentified passenger reportedly told his father, "I'll fix this right now," and jumped out of the window.

Fellow passengers said his father and brother witnessed the "impulsive" leap.

Deborah Morrison, another passenger on board the cruise, told the Post that "there was a lot of yelling and that the crew was alerted immediately."

"The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search," the Royal Caribbean spokesperson said.

The US Coast Guard said USCG Cutter Seneca and Air Station Miami HC-144 crews were conducting the search.

The Liberty of the Seas departed from South Florida and was 57 miles from Great Inagua in The Bahamas when the passenger jumped overboard.

The cruise ship has 18 decks and can accommodate 3,634 passengers, served by a crew of about 1,300.

The chances of you falling overboard off a cruise ship are extremely low .

In 2023, About 31 million passengers traveled on a cruise, and about 10 people went overboard, of which two miraculously survived, Business Insider reported .

"Even one incident is one too many," CLIA told Business Insider, explaining that "the vast majority of cases are either reckless behavior or some form of intentional act. People don't just inadvertently fall over the side of a ship."

Last month, a 23-year-old man who felt seasick fell overboard from the MSC Euribia cruise ship while crossing the North Sea in Europe and was presumed dead.

In December, an MSC Cruises passenger jumped from one of its ships while sailing from Europe to South America.

According to a Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) report, only 28.2% of passengers who fell overboard from 2009 to 2019 were successfully rescued.

US passenger on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas dies in Roatan

The accident happened on March 15 when Mr. Rucker jumped from a raised structure into the water below. The purpose of the platform is less than clear. A woman has died aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean after falling from a balcony and landing on a fellow passenger who was walking on the deck below.

The Virgin Voyages cruise ship had recently departed the port of Miami in the direction of Roatan, Honduras, when the incident occurred, with passengers reporting the woman fell up to 10 stories onto the deck below.

Emergency medics aboard the Valiant Lady were quick to attend to the woman on the evening of Sunday, April 2, shortly after the ship set sail.

The first evening of the six-night cruise to the Mexican port of Cozumel, the ship had departed the Miami shortly after 6pm.

The passenger on the deck below is reported to have walked away from the incident uninjured.

"Yesterday evening shortly after departure there was a medical emergency involving one of our passengers," a Virgin spokesperson said.

"This passenger went over their balcony onto a lower deck, and despite receiving immediate medical attention, has passed away. 'We are deeply saddened by this loss of life and our hearts and thoughts are with this person's loved ones.'

The ship made a u-turn during the early hours of Monday morning following the incident, with passengers informed of their return to the port of Miami shortly after 1am.

"I just started my FIRST cruise with Virgin Voyages… and someone fell from their balcony and died,' tweeted passenger Mel Murray following the incident.

"On the first day bro - people SAW that s*** happen. That is *terrifying*!!"

The ship will now skip Roatan due to timing issues and Costa Maya due to the weather, continuing on to Cozumel as planned.

The Valiant Lady is then set to return to Miami on Saturday morning via the Caribbean island of Bimini.

Six-night cruises aboard the ship start at $1,700, with passengers reportedly being offered credit towards a future cruise as a result of the schedule changes.

The tragedy comes a matter of weeks after another woman was found dead on a Carnival Cruise ship.

The death triggered an FBI investigation after crew members aboard the ship were notified that a woman was found unresponsive onboard.

Death in Honduras Adds to Growing List of Cruise Zip-Line Accidents

An Israeli man on his honeymoon in Honduras was killed Thursday when he collided with his wife on a treetop zip-line. The wife was flown to Fort Lauderdale for treatment for serious injuries.

The accident, which took place on Roatan, a popular island for shore excursions, is only the latest in a string of incidents in recent years involving cruise-based zip-lining.

Zip lines are a quickly growing and often unregulated segment of the tourism industry that is spawning more and more horror stories about badly designed lines, incompetent owners, failed safety checks and plain bad luck that have broken tourists' bones and blinded, crippled and killed them. The zip-line operators, meanwhile, may quickly get back to business with nary a slap on the wrist. According to the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, the number of zip-line injuries skyrocketed from hundreds in the 1990s to over 3,600 by 2012 just in the US. An Ohio State University study found that 12% of zip-line injuries were serious enough to require hospitalization, making it as dangerous or more dangerous than rock climbing.

And as zip lines have become popular around the globe, they've become almost de rigueur on cruise lines' menus of shore excursions, an easy way to appeal to the adventure-tourism market while still making it accessible, at least in theory, to normally sedentary passengers. But those cruise passengers aren't immune to the safety issues plaguing the zip-line industry as a whole.

Roatan alone saw a Norwegian Spirit passenger plunge to her death 10 years ago, followed three years ago by a woman on a Royal Caribbean ship who was seriously injured zip-lining. The Israeli couple in last week's accident, identified as Egael Tishman, 24, and Shif Fanken, 27, were passengers on the Royal Caribbean ship Allure of the Seas. The zip-line adventure was part of a cruise package.

It's not just an issue in Honduras. A Celebrity cruise to Dominica in 2014 left a zip-lining woman with a broken ankle when her legs slammed into a tree . In Puerto Rico in 2015, a 56-year-old woman from New Mexico on a Carnival vacation died when she fell 20 feet from a zip line. Outside Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in 2016, a California woman on a Norwegian cruise fell 500 feet from a zip line into the tree canopy, surviving but leaving her in a leg brace (the zip-line experience was one the woman's family arranged on their own, not through the cruise line). Meanwhile, online forums for cruise-ship aficionados are rife with stories of zip-line incidents that never make the news, like the man who was left dangling 200 feet in the air in St. Kitts.

The Royal Caribbean website describes the three-hour, $89 Extreme Caribe Zip Line Tour on Roatan as an opportunity to "[s]woop above exotic plants, giant African Palms and beautiful landscapes" with cables as long as 1,950 feet and as high as 300 feet."

Tishman's body is to be flown back to Israel to be buried, according to the Israeli foreign ministry. According a Honduran report, the official cause of death is believed to be a brain hemorrhage . Honduran authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Norwegian Cruise Line Crew Member Killed in Roatan, Honduras

Just as passengers can become the targets of crime, so too can crew members. Sometimes the incidents occur onboard, and other times they happen ashore. Cruise travel is often glamorized, and in all honesty, for good reason. It’s one of the most economical ways to discover new and far off lands, and these days, the ships themselves are adventure enough for many.

But as with all good things, there is a darker side to cruising. Aside from the accidents and crimes that occur onboard, the foreign countries that are frequented by cruise ships are not always the safest. Last year, for example, there was a warning issued for travelers in the Bahamas after crime rates began to skyrocket in Nassau, the capital. Though port calls were still made in the popular island nation, passengers on several cruise lines were warned not to head too far into the city for fear of being robbed, attacked or even killed.

Honduras is another popular Caribbean destination for cruise ships. Of particular interest is the resort island of Roatan. But what not many people know is that crime in Honduras is even worse than in the Bahamas, and it has been for years! In fact, the U.S. State Department issued a warning for travelers in Honduras , which stated that Honduras has had the highest murder rate in the world since 2010. Yet, cruise lines continue to call on the port.

As we’ve seen with several incidents in the past, cruise lines don’t tend to take action until AFTER something bad happens. And now, something terrible did in fact happen in Honduras; a Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) crew member was murdered in Roatan .

The incident took place on Sunday, April 6, when the Norwegian Pearl ship docked in Roatan. The circumstances surrounding the crime aren’t clear, but what our maritime lawyers have learned is that the victim was Gavan Yaycob, 27, of the Philippines. If a crew member has the day off, they are allowed to disembark at a port of call just like passengers and can explore at their leisure. That’s most likely what Mr. Yaycob was doing, but what should have been a relaxing day turned horribly wrong.

The victim had allegedly only made it a short distance from the port when a gunman reportedly tried to rob him of his cell phone. Whether an altercation took place or not, we do know that the crew member was shot and died of his injuries.

Since the fatal shooting crime took place in a foreign country – and the crew member was of a foreign nationality – it’s doubtful anyone here in the U.S. will get much more insight into what really happened in Roatan.

The Honduran Tourism Institute issued a statement on the incident,  but appeared to focus more on how the shooting crime will affect tourism in general, as opposed to offering condolences to the crew member’s family and assuring an investigation will be initiated.

“This action weakens whatever effort the government could make to promote tourism and to grow the industry in this country,” said the institute’s director, Emilio Silvestre.

Seems like revenue is on both the cruise industry AND Honduras’ government’s minds.

Far too many crimes go undocumented and uninvestigated in foreign countries because the laws are too lax – especially when the crime is against a foreigner. Not even the victims’ families may be able to obtain information from foreign governments, which is why it’s always imperative to seek legal help with an experienced maritime attorney following any kind of crime or accident at sea or abroad. Cruise ship crew members are considered seafarers, and as such, are protected under international maritime law. When a crew member is a victim in an accident or crime, they or their surviving loved ones, may be able to file a seaman’s claim to ensure their rights are upheld.

We don’t know what – if anything – NCL is doing to investigate the incident or to repatriate the crew member’s body back to the Philippines. Hopefully the cruise line is working to help the crew member’s family obtain justice and is not just trying to lay low to avoid any kind of liability related to the incident.

Roughly two million tourists visited Honduras last year, half of which visited Roatan. If violent crimes are occurring, cruise lines should take a stand and protect both their crew and their passengers from harm by halting all port visits to Roatan, at least until crime rates diminish.

South Carolina Man with Dementia Goes Missing in Mexico During Royal Caribbean Cruise with Family

Edmund Solomon disappeared Wednesday afternoon in the area of Passion Island in Mexico, according to local authorities

An American tourist with dementia has gone missing in Mexico, triggering a multi-day search.

Edmund Solomon, 66, was reported missing at 8:17 p.m. local time on Wednesday, April 3, according to a Facebook post from Cozumel Civil Protection .

The man’s wife said her husband, who has “advanced dementia,” was wearing a collar with a GPS device to monitor his location when he disappeared in the area of Passion Island, per the Facebook post.

Solomon, who also goes by the name Brad, was “vacationing with family on a Royal Caribbean” cruise when he “wandered off by himself” around 1 p.m., Marissa Aldridge, who has worked with Solomon's wife, wrote in the description of a GoFundMe campaign she started for the couple.

Savannah Miller, the South Carolina man's daughter, said Brad had gone to the restroom at the cruise ship’s terminal when he disappeared, according to NBC affiliate WCBD-TV and ABC affiliate WCIV .

“When my stepmom, Mimi, came out, he wasn’t there,” Miller explained. “She thought he might still be in the bathroom so she waited for him for a few minutes. He didn’t come out.”

Miller said Brad was recently diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, which impacts behavior more than memory, according to WCBD-TV.

“He sometimes says odd things and behaves erratically — or oddly — because he’s just doing what he knows how to do,” Miller noted. “He can’t process the same way you or I can.”

Authorities said a taxi driver called 911 and reported picking up a foreign tourist who matched Brad’s description on the road to La Pasión island, according to Mexico News Daily .

Brad is believed to have entered the taxi on 65th Avenue around 2:30 p.m., asked to be dropped off at a road with access to the beach and later paid with a wristwatch.

Both Brad and his wife Mimi are nurses who “dedicated their lives and careers to helping others,” Aldridge said on GoFundMe. Mimi, who works at the local VA Hospital, is also a recent breast cancer survivor. 

“Between cancer and dementia, they have been through so much in the last few years,” Aldridge wrote, “and yet Mimi still shows up everyday to take care of others.”

In a statement, Royal Caribbean said they are “working closely with local law enforcement, who is continuing the search” for Brad, according to WCIV.

“Our care team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time,” the cruise line added.

Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

It wasn't a surprise to Julie Lenkoff's family that she was going on another cruise.

The 80-year-old has visited 120 countries, speaks 10 languages, and has been on countless cruises. Lenkoff is an experienced traveler, so no one batted an eye when she boarded a 21-day Norwegian cruise along the coast of Africa by herself on March 20, Kurt Gies, Lenkoff's son-in-law, told Business Insider.

But her family was shocked when another cruise passenger phoned Lenkoff's daughter, Lana Gies, to tell her they were with Lenkoff, Kurt said. She had been released from a hospital, could hardly speak, was losing her vision, and was on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe.

Kurt told BI Lenkoff had a stroke during a cruise-sponsored excursion and that the tour operator and cruise company left her at a hospital, where she was later discharged and left to figure out her own way home.

Kurt said a group of stranded tourists helped Lenkoff return to the US, where she remains in serious condition at the Stanford Medical Center.

"We had the means, the technology, and the ability to navigate this massive network to get her home," Kurt said. "I can only imagine if a family didn't or if that person was truly by themselves. What would've happened?"

The family says they have other stranded cruisers to thank for Lenkoff's return

On March 27, day eight of the Norwegian cruise, passengers disembarked the ship to explore São Tomé and Príncipe.

Kurt said Lenkoff joined a cruise-sponsored excursion with the tour company Navetur Equatour. During the tour, she passed out and fell, Diogo Beirão, the chief operating officer of the tour company, confirmed to BI. When Lenkoff regained consciousness, he said she couldn't speak English and had lost feeling in the right side of her body.

At the time, Beirão said the main concern was if Lenkoff had broken a bone or experienced a concussion. Kurt said doctors in the US later confirmed that Lenkoff had a stroke.

Beirão told BI that his tour guides brought Lenkoff back to the dock, where he says a nurse from the Norwegian cruise evaluated her on the pier.

In a statement sent to BI, a Norwegian cruise representative said that "on March 27, 2024, an 80-year-old woman was medically disembarked after being evaluated by our onboard medical team, who thought it best that she receive further assessment and treatment as needed from a local hospital."

Beirão said Lenkoff was transported to the closest hospital, which was "not very comfortable" because it "had no private rooms, just curtains." However, Beirão said he believes it was the right decision not to let her reboard the cruise.

Kurt said Norwegian brought Lenkoff the belongings from her room; however, her credit cards and cash were lost. He added that the tour company later found the missing wallet in a tour van, which was brought to Lenkoff more than 24 hours after she was released from the hospital.

Kurt said he and the rest of Lenkoff's family had no idea this was happening since Norwegian hadn't contacted them.

Meanwhile, a group of eight people were on a separate, private tour of São Tomé and Príncipe. BI previously reported that the tour ran into issues, and the group missed the ship's boarding deadline .

The group was stranded on the island without cash or medications and with one working credit card, which passengers Jill and Jay Campbell owned. The group found a hotel, contacted the closest American consulate, and planned to meet the ship at its next port in the Gambia.

As all this was happening, Kurt said, Lenkoff was released from the hospital.

Beirão said he was unaware that Lenkoff had a stroke, but he visited her at the hospital, and "she was not totally functional" but "could speak very well." While Lenkoff could communicate, Beirão said she often forgot what she was trying to say mid-sentence.

In Norwegian's statement, the representative said: "We attempted to call the guest several times, and as we were unable to reach her, we worked directly with our port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, to receive updates about the guest."

"In instances such as these," the statement continued, "as the guest was released from the hospital and in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent."

Kurt said there are no phone or WhatsApp records of Norwegian reaching out on her cellphone, and he believes that family members should've been contacted in this instance since the company could not reach Lenkoff to confirm she was in a coherent state.

After being discharged, Kurt said the tour company connected the Americans with Lenkoff.

"You have people figuring out how they're getting off this island, and they're given the responsibility to take care of an 80-year-old woman who just had a stroke," Kurt said.

At the time, Lenkoff had no way to pay for anything, so the Campbells provided Lenkoff with food and a place to sleep, Kurt said.

"I truly believe sometimes we're put in certain places for a reason, and I believe we were put in this place for the 80-year-old woman who was left alone. God forbid what would have happened to that lady if we were not here," Jay Campbell told North Carolina's WRAL .

Kurt said Lenkoff was still having trouble speaking and had started to lose her vision.

Using Lenkoff's phone, Jill Campbell called Lenkoff's daughter to tell her what happened. Around the same time, the American consulate called, though Kurt said the family was unsure how the consulate learned about Lenkoff's state.

Kurt said he and Lana attempted to reach Norwegian multiple times but couldn't connect with anyone at the company.

"It was decided that we need to get Julie off that island," he said. "No one at Norwegian was going to take responsibility for it."

The Norwegian representative told BI Lenkoff had been "escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States, where she has now made a safe return."

Kurt said all of Lenkoff's travel arrangements were "made by her family" and that it wasn't Norwegian who escorted her, adding that the "airlines took responsibility for ensuring she got safely on each plane segment during her journey home."

He said Lenkoff flew to Lisbon, then to Toronto, and finally to San Francisco.

Thankfully, he said, Lana had sent her mom with an Apple AirTag so the family could watch Lenkoff make the trip back to the US.

The Apple product has become popular for tracking everything from missing suitcases to lost golfing equipment and a magician's sound equipment . Some parents are even using them to keep track of their children . According to Benzinga , Apple sold $1 billion worth of Airtags within two years of releasing the tracking device.

Kurt said he and Lana used the AirTag to follow Lenkoff in Lisbon as she reached her next gate.

"We were able to track her movement across the world as she was coming home, and that was a huge relief for us," he said.

Once Lenkoff arrived in California, Kurt said she was medically evacuated to the Stanford Medical Center.

"They pull her out on a gurney and this huge smile comes across her face as she sees her daughter for the first time," he told BI.

Today, Lenkoff is in critical condition

Since arriving at the hospital in California, Kurt told BI that Lenkoff has undergone numerous tests and scans. He said doctors believe she may have also had a heart attack, and while she was at the Stanford Medical Center, she experienced a second stroke.

Kurt said Lenkoff remains in a serious condition.

Meanwhile, the Gieses have continued to try to reach Norwegian. Kurt said two junior staffers have reached out to learn more about what happened, but he said no one from the cruise line had taken responsibility for not contacting Lenkoff's emergency contacts.

Kurt said the experience has taught him and his family that they should not rely on cruise companies to keep passengers safe.

Kurt heard from the Campbells that the group made it back on the ship on Wednesday. When everyone is healthy and back in the US, he said they plan to meet with the Campbells to thank them.

"We truly believe that our mother would've died had she been left to her own devices," Kurt said. "The Campbells are now members of our family. They are the true heroes of this story."

Spain to deport dozens of Bolivians whose false visas held up cruise ship in Barcelona

MADRID (AP) — Spain will on Thursday deport more than 60 Bolivians who arrived last week by cruise ship in the northeastern port of Barcelona but were not allowed to disembark because their visas were false.

The Spanish government’s office in Barcelona said 65 of the 69 Bolivians who arrived will be flown to the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz. The plane will be paid for by MSC Cruises, which owns the ship in which they arrived from Brazil.

Four members of a family with Spanish relatives will be allowed to enter Spain.

Spanish authorities said the Bolivian passengers had false visas to enter the European border-free Schengen area, an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries.

The Bolivians’ visa problems meant that the cruise ship with more than 1,000 passengers was stuck for two days in Barcelona and unable to continue on its route in the Mediterranean Sea until the situation was resolved.

The cruise ship set sail after the Bolivians were temporarily accommodated in another boat while police interviewed them.

MSC Cruises said last week the Bolivian passengers’ documentation appeared correct upon boarding in Brazil.

A young cybersecurity research firm founder has died after she spent several days fighting for her life from being struck by a speeding SUV on the Upper East Side during last week’s rain showers, cops said.

Sophia d’Antoine, the 30-year-old founder of Margin Research, died on Friday — three days after she was struck by a speeding 2017 Land Rover SUV about half a block from her apartment, police said.

The horrifying crash occurred as d’Antoine was crossing York Avenue at East 87th Street around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2.

After hitting d’Antoine, the Land Rover, driven by a 72-year-old man, hit a taxi head-on, sending the vehicle smashing into a parked, unoccupied 2022 Ford Explorer SUV, police said.

Records show d’Antoine lived on East 87th, about half a block from where the tragic accident unfolded.

She founded Margin Research, a boutique NYC-based research firm, in 2018, according to the company’s website.

A website for a cyber security event she previously attended described d’Antoine as the “Hacker in Residence” at NYU.

D’Antoine was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition following the crash and remained in critical condition for several days before succumbing to her injuries on Friday.

The 62-year-old taxi driver was taken to New York City Health + Hospitals Elmhurst in stable condition and the driver of the Land Rover remained on the scene.

The Land Rover had been cited for speeding in a school zone five times in three years, according to traffic summons data reviewed by Upper East Site.

The taxi that was involved had also been caught by traffic cameras speeding in a school zone 13 times in less than two years, the outlet reported.

It wasn’t clear if the rainy weather during the crash played a role.

The NYPD has not arrested anyone in the case, though the investigation remains ongoing.
