Crystal Cruises Inks 15K-SQ Lease for HQ in Aventura

By julia echikson december 13, 2022 6:29 pm.

Crystal Cruises signed a 15,206-square-foot lease at the Optima Office Campus in Aventura, Fla., according to the company’s brokers.

Crystal Cruises ’ new office, located on the 15th floor of the 28-story Optima Onyx Tower , will house the company’s headquarters. While the company builds out the space, it will be based elsewhere in the Optima campus.

It’s unclear from where Crystal Cruises is relocating from. Illinois-based A&K Travel Group bought the company earlier this year after its parent company, Genting Hong Kong , declared bankruptcy. Prior to the financial hardships, Crystal Cruises, which owns two ships, had an office in Downtown Miami.

“We were searching for a central location that would allow us to execute our growth and operational goals by capitalizing on the talent pool in both Miami-Dade and Broward counties,” Crystal Cruises’ CEO Jack Anderson said in a statement.

The Optima Onyx Tower is the latest addition to the Optima campus, which features three Class A office buildings. Completed this year, the building, which offers 285,377 square feet of leasable space, sits at 1010 South Federal Highway , at the border of Hallandale Beach and Aventura.

Besides the 28-story tower, the campus includes a nine-story building featuring 84,399 square feet of leasable space, as well as a four-story property offering 29,621 square feet. Developers Jose Bromberg and Ariel Bromberg completed the properties in 2013 and remain the owners today, according to property records.

CBRE ’s Scott Goldstein and Keith Edelman represented the tenant. Representing the landlord were Juan Ruiz and Jack Davidson of Blanca Commercial Real Estate , who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CBRE Arranges New HQ Lease For Crystal Cruises

CBRE has facilitated a new 15,206-square-foot office lease for Crystal Cruises ’ headquarters to be located in Optima Onyx Tower at 1010 South Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach.

CBRE’s Scott Goldstein and Keith Edelman handled lease negotiations for Crystal Cruises. The landlord is Optima International North LLC , who was represented by Juan Ruiz and Jack Davidson of Blanca Commercial Real Estate .

“We were searching for a central location that would allow us to execute our growth and operational goals by capitalizing on the talent pool in both Miami-Dade and Broward counties,” said Crystal Cruises’ CEO Jack Anderson. “The building’s proximity to the soon-to-open Brightline station in Aventura will offer employees and visitors easy access to the new office. Additionally, employees will have access to the Optima Campus’ shared amenities, as well as nearby shopping, dining and entertainment venues.”

The cruise line plans to occupy space on the 15th floor in the fourth quarter of 2023. While their new, state-of-the-art office is being built, they will occupy temporary space in the complex.

“Crystal Cruises will use temporary space within the campus until their new space on the 15th floor, which is in shell condition, is built-out to their specifications. This will allow them to commence on-site operations immediately,” said CBRE Senior Vice President Goldstein.

Optima Onyx Tower is the newest 28-story office building on the Optima Office Campus. The Class A, LEED Platinum Certified building features solar panels, electric car chargers, rainwater recycling system, onsite restaurant and café, fitness center, jogging trail, rooftop lap pool, and an acre of collaborative green space.

In June 2022, A&K Travel Group Ltd. (A&K) , a pioneering travel company, acquired the award-winning Crystal Cruises along with its two luxury cruise vessels, which are currently being refurbished in Italy and are anticipated to resume sailing in the summer of 2023.

After takeover, Crystal is back in Florida with a revamped cruise ship

  • Richard Tribou Orlando Sentinel (TNS)

Crystal Cruises’ future was up in the air when its ships were seized and it declared bankruptcy in 2022. But a new owner bought its two ocean-going vessels, which combined went under $170 million makeovers, and they are sailing again trying to win back its luxury sailing clientele.

New owners Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group renamed the line simply Crystal, and one of its ships, Crystal Serenity, made its way to PortMiami this month to begin a winter sailing season of the Caribbean.

“It’s great to be back in Miami. It’s been a while,” said Capt. Birger Vorland at an event on Nov. 2 at the port. “We had faith. We knew we were going to be back. … We have a fairly drastically redesigned ship here in many areas. Still same old captain though.”

He said he is among 80% of former crew that returned to sailing when the ships came back into service over the summer.

“In the time that we have been out of service, it was a little stressful for everybody,” he said. “We had faithful guests who saw their home away from home suddenly disappearing and maybe it wouldn’t come back, but for us that work there, we were kind of unsure too.”

He said people would ask him if the makeover meant the signature service and feel for the ship were changing.

“It totally blew me away, so I said, ‘Listen, it’s the same, just better,’” he said.

That includes several of the suites and cabins getting complete renovations with more contemporary designs and two new categories catering to solo travelers.

Part of the line’s allure is its dining selection, including the partnership with Chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa and his venue Umi Uma, a mix of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine. It’s among 11 options along with fine Italian venue Osteria D’Ovidio, The Vintage Room that features wine pairings from a large onboard cellar and family-style dining with tapas-style offerings at Tastes Kitchen & Bar.

The new spa on board is called Aurōra, with an illuminated fiber-optic starlight ceiling adding to the ambience.

“Rebuilding Crystal has been a challenging but rewarding endeavor,” said CEO Cristina Levis. “We’ve invested in revitalizing our ships and are committed to keeping our loyal guests as excited about the brand as ever.”

Serenity, which was built in 2003, and 1995′s Crystal Symphony, pave the way for Crystal’s plans to build new two new ocean cruise ships and two new expedition vessels.

“The effort to rebuild a brand always comes with challenges,” Levis said. “One of the most significant aspects is continuing to build our guest confidence and loyalty. We’ve invested a considerable amount of money, time and effort in communicating our commitment to excellence and exceptional experiences while demonstrating tangible improvements.”

For now, the older ships look to bring back what had been a loyal customer base while having to compete with new cruise lines in the luxury market like Explora Journeys, Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons, along with new ships from existing brands like Regent Seven Seas, Silversea Cruises and Seabourn.

“The company has to navigate the competitive, industry landscape with new ships joining each year, ensuring that our offerings continue to attract discerning travelers looking for the most exceptional experience while exploring all corners of the globe,” Levis said.

Part of that is sailing out of Miami this year, but shifting to Port Everglades in 2024. And also pulling on the expertise of Abercrombie & Kent with its land-based tours to enhance its destination offerings.

“Crystal has exciting plans for Florida in the future. Our 2025 itineraries were recently announced, with our ‘World Cruise’ leaving from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale along with many other voyages with South Florida turnaround days,” she said noting more than 17 voyages departing from the port stating in November 2024.

“We see Florida as a strategic hub that allows us to offer a wide range of itineraries and cater to the diverse preferences of our guests,” she said. “Crystal is committed to expanding presences in Florida as the state continues to be a top destination for cruise departures.”

Crystal Cruises, the luxury cruise operator whose ships were pursued through Bahamian waters by federal agents over unpaid bills, has laid off all 238 of its Miami-based employees and intends to wind down its operations.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filing with the state of Florida, the company started to lay off top executives, managers and staff members in Miami on Jan. 21, and intended to complete the task by last Friday. The layoffs are permanent.

“We are taking the action because we will be undertaking an assignment for the benefit of creditors, or seeking similar relief,” a company human resources staffer said in a letter dated Feb. 10 to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez and Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

The letter was posted on a state DEO website Friday.

It was not immediately clear how customers who have booked cruises not taken would receive any refunds or other compensation.

A path to potential refunds

But there are ways to retrieve their money, said Michelle Couch-Friedman, the New York-based executive director of Elliott Advocacy, a nonprofit organization that helps consumers.

“The easiest way is a credit card chargeback if the passenger has used a credit card to pay for the cruise,” she said in an email to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “Of course, if the passenger has used a check or a debit card to pay for the cruise, a credit card dispute isn’t an option. Some banks will still pursue a reversal of a debit transaction [especially if the debit card is branded with a MasterCard or Visa]. But that option will vary by bank.”

She also said consumers can check to see if their home states have a “sellers of travel” law and restitution fund. Not all of them do.

“The good news for Florida residents is that Florida does have a sellers of travel law [ https://www.fdacs.gov/Business-Services/Sellers-of-Travel ]. Florida consumers who have purchased a cruise from Crystal may be able to file a claim in Florida,” she said.

Attempts to reach Crystal’s offices Monday were met with disconnected telephone lines and a company website, crystalcruises.com , that tells customers that cruises have been temporarily suspended and that the company’s call center has been “paused.”

One number in operation directs callers with accounts payables questions to a line with a full mailbox. Callers with other issues are advised to remain on the line, only to have the call dropped.

Voyages for the company’s ocean and expedition ships were suspended through April 29, with river cruises suspended through the end of May, the website says.

Those suspensions, according to the website, “will provide Crystal’s management team with an opportunity to evaluate the current state of business and examine various options moving forward.”

Interim president and CEO Jack Anderson, who was appointed in October 2020, also posted on the website: “This was an extremely difficult decision but a prudent one given the current business environment and recent developments with our parent company, Genting Hong Kong.”

But Crystal’s top executives, including president and CEO, are among those listed on the company’s termination list filed with the state.

Refuge in Bermuda court

The halt in Crystal’s operations is a direct result of financial troubles encountered by its parent, Genting Hong Kong, according to Fortune. While other major cruise operators resumed sailing as government COVID restrictions eased, hardline policies to curb the virus in Hong Kong and other areas hindered Genting Hong Kong’s recovery, Fortune said. In addition, a Genting Hong Kong shipbuilding subsidiary in Germany went insolvent early last month and the parent company petitioned the Supreme Court of Bermuda to wind down its operations.

The seizures marked the apparent end for Crystal Cruises. Two of its ships were seized in the Bahamas over $4.6 million in unpaid fuel bills.

The ships are now in the hands of a company called V.Ships, a vessel management firm named by a court-appointed liquidator, according to Cruise Industry News.

The company’s wind-down will result in a lengthy process for consumers trying to reclaim their money through the court, said Daniel Stermer, an attorney with the restructuring firm Development Specialists Inc. in Fort Lauderdale.

“It’s going to put the onus on consumers to submit claims forms and attach the right documents,” he said, “and hope there is a recovery of a pro rata share of a future distribution. In many cases that ends up being years later at small fractions.”

Why Bermuda? “My guess is there is some business reason for that, and I doubt it is entirely consumer-driven,” Stermer said.

February 14, 2022 / 6:35 PM EST / CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami-based Crystal Cruises, which recently diverted two of its ships to the Bahamas to avoid a judge's order to seize the ships in a legal dispute over fuel bills, is shutting down.

According to the Sun Sentinel , the company has laid off all 238 of its Miami-based employees as it winds down operations.

According to the company website , Crystal announced in January it was suspending its Ocean and Expedition ships through April 29, 2022, and River cruises were also suspended through the end of May 2022. • The financiers were presented by the Bahamian law firm Alexiou Knowles & Co.

On June 22nd was announced that both vessels are now owned by A&K Travel Group Ltd - a joint venture of Abercrombie & Kent Ltd (owned by Geoffrey Kent) and Heritage Group Monaco (Lefebvre family-owned private equity specializing in luxury travel, VIP tourism, medical technologies).

Company changes in 2024

In January, Crystal signed a partnership with Ensemble Travel Group (1968-founded consortium, member-owned and run organization of ~850 independent travel agencies in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand). Under this deal, Crystal provides an onboard amenity program, Ensemble Travel-hosted voyages, and access to discounted cruises for travel agents.

In February, Crystal signed a partnership with Beefbar (Monte Carlo-based restaurant brand with 20+ locations globally) to enhance the shipboard culinary program. Beefbar menu (available during lunches and dinners) features vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as specialty cocktails.

In April was launched the Crystal Referral Program encouraging past guests (loyalty program members) to refer their family, friends, and colleagues to travel with Crystal Cruises. For every first-time Crystal cruiser a past traveler refers, the new customer receives 5% cruise fare discount, while the past guest receives the 5% value in OBC/onboard credit applicable towards a future cruise. The number of guests one can refer is unlimited.

Company changes in 2023 (relaunch)

Following extensive drydock refurbishments , in 2023 both ships (Serenity and Symphony) restarted operations for the Cristal Cruises brand, which was fully acquired by A&K (brand name, customer list, websites, social media accounts, other assets) from the Bahamas-based "Crystal Cruises Ltd" for USD 13 million.

For the ship management, A&K contracted the Monaco-based company "V.Ships Leisure Ltd" (part of V.Group Holdings Ltd).

In June 2023 Crystal announced the Aurora Spa - the new onboard wellness concept through the company's collaboration with TDoS (Tillberg Design of Sweden) and partnerships with the premium cosmetic brands ELEMIS and KERASTASE. On both ships, the Spa facilities were completely redesigned, modernized and expanded with new treatments and services. Crystal also renewed its 2019-signed partnership with OneSpaWorld Holdings Ltd (2018-founded, Bahamas-based company) for staffing and managing the fleet's shipboard wellness (spa and fitness) facilities and services.

In July 2023, as Head Nutritionist was appointed Dalila Roglieri. She works with the fleet's culinary teams to develop balanced menus catering to different types of diets and meal requirements.

In a presentation onboard Crystal Serenity in late July (during the preview cruise/for VIP guests only from Trieste), Cristina Levis announced that A&K has plans to sign an MoA (memorandum of agreement) with two shipbuilders (Fincantieri-Trieste, and Meyer Werft-Papenburg) for ordering a total of four sea-going vessels (to be delivered by 2029), including two standard (max 650 passengers each) and two smaller/expedition-type (max 220 pax).

Crystal RIVER Cruises

Crystal River Cruises was a division of the old Crystal Cruises (managing 4x newbuild riverboats ) and a separate branch offering fully all-inclusive deals. The product was marked by gourmet dining, expert enrichment, high-class entertainment, top-luxury amenities and impeccable service. In each port along the itinerary were offered culture-themed tours and excursions. In some of the ports, the river ships had overnight stays allowing tourists to enjoy high-class gourmet dining experiences at Michelin-starred restaurants ashore and also exclusive evening events and entertainment on board.

In January 2016, Genting bought the remaining 30% stocks of Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven . The deal also included ~50% stake in the shipbuilder's real estate subsidiary company "Investitions und Verwaltungs". The acquisition plans were first announced on September 18, 2015.

The announcement said that Star Cruises together with the German companies Petram Beteiligungs, Ehlerding Beteiligungs, and BLG Logistics Group entered into a stock purchase agreement that allows GHK to acquire a majority stake in Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven GmbH. Before the agreement's announcement, Genting signed a letter of intent with the shipbuilding company for Crystal's new polar-class ships scheduled for deliveries in 2018-Q4 (later pushed back to 2019).

  • To start operations, Crystal River Cruises purchased an existing riverboat that was fully refurbished and renamed "Crystal Mozart" (launched in July 2016). Additionally were ordered 4 new luxury "river yachts" (by Lloyd Werft) to be launched in 2017. Crystal Mozart is currently Europe's largest river ship, except, of course, the old-design Russian ships on Volga River. Mozart has capacity 160 passengers, large accommodations (sized 19-80 m2 / 200-860 ft2), multiple restaurants, an indoor swimming pool.
  • In July 2016, Crystal River launched fleet's first boat Crystal Mozart . The newbuilds debuted in 2017 ( Crystal Bach , Crystal Mahler ) and in 2018 ( Crystal Debussy , Crystal Ravel ).
  • In October 2016, ALMACO Group (specializing in the construction of offshore accommodations, staterooms, newbuilding galleys) won its ever first river cruise ship contract to supply galley/kitchen areas and suites for the 4 new "river yachts". The contract included 220 top-luxury cruise suites, corresponding hallways and corridors, turnkey delivery of the ship's galleys and pantries (equipment and lining). Earlier in 2016, ALMACO refurbished the crew cabins and catering areas of Crystal Mozart.
  • Crystal Bach and Crystal Mahler cruised on Main, Danube and Rhine rivers. Crystal Ravel and Crystal Debussy cruised in France - on Dordogne, Garonne, Gironde and Seine rivers. Crystal Mozart cruised only on Danube due to its size.

Crystal riverboats were Malta- flagged and provided dedicated (per cabin) butler service, Egyptian cotton linens, King-size double beds facing toward French Balcony windows, full-length mirrors, walk-in closets, ETRO robes and slippers, Nespresso machines, wall-mounted TVs.

Onboard dining options included Waterside Restaurant (dining room/open-seating), Vintage Room (wine bar / private dinner/party venue), Palm Court (show lounge), Cove Bar, Bistro (casual cafe). The river yachts have Fitness Center, full-service Spa, indoor infinity pool (resistance swimming pool), top-deck Vista Bar & Grill.

Onboard dining menus were based on food prepared with the freshest, locally sourced ingredients and cruise itinerary-based traditional specialties - fresh seafood and fish (Holland), seasonal fruits and vegetables (Holland, Germany), meat and poultry (Austrian Alps and Bavarian farms), local draught and craft beers, regional wines and cheeses. Specialty coffees and teas were served complimentary by the Vienna Austria-based company Julius Meinl.

Crystal YACHT Cruises

In March 2016, Crystal revealed plans to build the world's first purpose-built polar class megayacht - Crystal Endeavor . The brand's first-ever expedition ship was initially planned to enter service in August 2018 but due to shipyard issues, the construction was delayed and the delivery was rescheduled for 2021. The superyacht has max passenger capacity 200 and 100 passenger suites.

The yacht as technology features 8 electric amphibious Zodiacs/RIBs, two 7-person minisubmarines, 2 helicopters, 2 helipads. It also offers complimentary jet skis, sea kayaks, wave runners, paddleboards, fishing facilities, snorkeling, and scuba diving equipment.

The yacht is fitted with offshore dynamic positioning technology and computer-controlled navigation systems allowing it to automatically maintain position using its own propulsion (thrusters and propellers). This allows the vessel to stay above coral reefs without using anchors, which could damage the seabed. The ship is similar to the "discovery yacht'" Scenic Eclipse (2018) built for Scenic Cruises .

Crystal Endeavor yacht cruise ship design

In November 2016, Crystal announced a yacht fleet expansion - from 1 to 3 new vessels, with scheduled deliveries in 2021 (Endeavor), 2021 (TBN1) and 2022 (TBN2). The sisterships were designed to have as "standard" the "megayacht cruising" industry's first mini-subs, helicopters and ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles).

Crystal Endeavor yacht cruise ship design

Crystal's yacht fleet had to operate in polar and coastal regions - European Arctic (during summer), migrating whales route (sailing along the coasts of Europe and the Americas), down to Antarctica (during winter). The bold decision for 3 new polar ships followed a 3-year research that found that nearly 70% of Crystal's customers are highly interested in polar expedition travel.

new DIAMOND-Class ships (2022-2025/canceled)

In January 2018, Crystal Yacht Cruises announced significant changes to the new ship design, downsizing the initial "EXCLUSIVE Class" (Genting Cruise Lines ships) and removing from the original design the top-deck private residences.

The first vessel's delivery was initially scheduled for 2018, then pushed back to 2019, and finally set for 2022.

In 2018, the EXCLUSIVE-Class design was changed to DIAMOND-Class. The vessel's size/volume was reduced (from 100,000 to 67,000 GT-tons) and the max passenger capacity was decreased by 20% (from 1000 to 800).

Staterooms included 48x "Crystal Residences" - ultra-luxury suites sized between 600-4000 ft2 (56-372 m2) each, but these were later removed from the design.

DIAMOND-Class megayachts were also with ice-classed hulls and propulsion based on 4x AzipodXO units (by ABB Marine). The gearless propulsion system comprised 1x electric drive motor (per unit) contained in a submerged pod (outside the hull). AzipodXO units are specifically designed for high ice-class navigation. ABB Azipods reduce the vessel's lifecycle costs and guarantee optimum efficiency operations. Of all 4 units per ship, 2 had power output 22 MV (each), and 2 had 19 MW (each).

The new ships had to be also fitted with the "ABB 800xA DCS" (distributed control) system, EMMA Energy Management System (historical data analysis, with a comparison to current sea conditions) and fleet management suite (fleetwide benchmarking).

This plane is a long-haul, twin-engine jet airliner with a passenger capacity of 242 to 335 (3-class seating). The aircraft was the world's first built with composite materials as the primary construction material for the airframe. The aircraft was introduced in 2011.

At the end of 2015, Crystal AirCruises announced planned purchase of two more aircraft - Airbus ACJ319 (corporate jet with removable extra fuel tanks) and Bombardier Global Express XRS (Canada-manufactured ultra-long-range business jet). Crystal RIVER cruise itineraries

In July 2015, Genting announced its expansion plan to build new ships for its river cruise line (brand). The new boats feature larger staterooms and a bigger space-to-guest ratio in comparison to other riverboats. Their itineraries are planned to maximize port times for quality tour experiences ashore.

Crystal's new river brand started operations in 2016 and exclusively on European waterways. The company’s product is well known worldwide for its exceptional quality and fully all-inclusive deals. Itineraries are on the rivers Rhine, Main, Danube, Moselle, and intentionally deviate from traditional routes to avoid congestion in call ports. The list of destinations (visited countries along the itinerary) includes Germany, Switzerland, Holland, France, Belgium, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary.

On Grand European itineraries (between Baltic Sea and Black Sea) are additionally included river ports of call in the Balkan countries Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania.
