Telaga Warna Dieng

Telaga Warna adalah telaga vulkanis yang airnya mengandung kadar mineral yang berubah-ubah sehingga pantulan warna yang dihasilkan beraneka ragam.

Warna indah di permukaan telaga akan muncul bersahutan saat terpantul oleh sinar matahari ketika hari mulai terik seperti seperti warna pelangi yaitu hijau, biru, kuning, silver dan coklat. Keindahan Telaga Warna Dieng dapat disaksikan dari tepian telaga atau dari atas Bukit Sidengkeng dan dari Batu Ratapan Angin/Batu Pandang.

Secara geografis Telaga Warna berlokasi di Desa Dieng Wetan, Kecamatan Kejajar, Kabupaten Wonosobo. Telaga Warna Dieng dikelola langsung di bawah naungan Badan Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BKSDA).

Di dalam kawasan BKSDA, selain Telaga Warna juga terdapat Telaga Pengilon dan komplek gua alam. Telaga Pengilon terletak di samping Telaga Warna dengan permukaan airnya terlihat berkilauan seperti cermin serta tidak mengandung belerang sehingga berwarna jernih.

Kawah Sikidang merupakan salah satu kawah vulkanis di Dieng Plateau yang masih aktif. Kawah utama yang selalu berpindah-pindah tempat atau melompat-lompat sehingga kawah aktif ini dinamakan dengan Kawah Sikidang yang berasal dari kata kidang atau hewan rusa.

Kawah Sikidang mengandung sulfur pekat berupa lumpur cair mendidih berwarna hitam keabu-abuan. Kawah ini memiliki bau belerang yang menyengat sehingga pengunjung diharapkan untuk mengenakan masker untuk mengurangi bau belerang yang muncul dari dalam kawah.

Kawah Sikidang memiliki lokasi yang strategis yaitu masih di dalam kawasan Plateau Dieng sehingga mudah dijangkau oleh semua pengunjung wisata. Kawah Sikidang terletak di Desa Karangsari , Dieng Wetan, Kabupaten Banjarnegara. Tempat wisata ini dibuka pukul 06.00 hingga pukul 18.00 sore hari.

Komplek Candi Arjuna

Candi Arjuna adalah kumpulan candi-candi Dieng yang dibangun pada awal abad ke 8 hingga abad ke 13 pada masa kekuasaan Raja Sanjaya. Komplek Candi Arjuna ini terdiri dari lima bangunan candi kuno yang menyatu di dalam satu lokasi diantaranya Candi Arjuna, Candi Srikandi, Candi Puntadewa, Candi Sembadra dan Candi Semar.

Penamaan candi-candi Dieng tersebut berasal dari kisah – kisah mahabarata dan bukan berasal dari nama asli candi tersebut karena belum ada prasasti yang mengisyaratkan nama candi tersebut.

Komplek Candi Arjuna merupakan candi beraliran Hindu yang dibangun tepat di tengah-tengah Plateau Dieng diantara Gunung Prau, Gunung Pakuwojo dan Gunung Pangonan pada ketinggian 2.093 meter di atas permukaan laut. Bebatuan yang digunakan untuk membangun candi Dieng ialah batu andesit yang diambil dari Gunung Pakuwojo.

Daya tarik Komplek Candi Arjuna merupakan bangunan candi Hindu tertua di Pulau Jawa dengan kekayaan arsitekturnya serta berlokasi di area pegunungan dengan panorama alam menawan sehingga komplek candi ini terkenal hingga ke mancanegara.

Sunrise Sikunir

Dalam perjalanan wisata menuju Dataran Tinggi Dieng, panorama indah yang tidak bisa terlewatkan adalah pemandangan matahari terbit yang dapat disaksikan dari puncak Bukit Sikunir dengan ketinggian 2.370 m di atas parmukaan laut.

Sunrise Sikunir merupakan maskot utama wisata Dieng yang menawarkan pemandangan spektakuler matahari terbit dengan cahaya keemasan yang disebut dengan Golden Sunrise Sikunir.

Wisata Sunrise Sikunir berada di Desa Sembungan, Kecamatan Kejajar, Kabupaten Wonosobo. Untuk mencapai puncak bukit, pengunjung akan berjalan kaki mendaki bukit kurang lebih 30 menit dengan akses alami berupa bebatuan dan tanah.

Panjang track dari area parkir menuju puncak bukit 800 meter. Udara yang sangat dingin bisa mencapai -3 derajad celcius sehingga mengharuskan wisatawan untuk mengenakan jaket hangat, sepatu trekking dan perlengkapan mendaki yang cocok lainnya.

Telaga Cebong

Telaga Cebong merupakan salah satu telaga cantik di Dieng Plateau. Telaga Cebong menjadi tempat piknik di Dieng untuk menikmati suasana pegunungan yang khas dengan menawarkan pesona keindahan alamnya. Telaga Cebong merupakan bekas kapundan kawah raksasa yang kemudian menjadi penampungan air hujan serta mata air yang muncul disetiap sisinya.

Telaga Cebong memiliki bentuk unik seperti anakan katak atau berudu sehingga penduduk Sembungan menamai telaga tersebut dengan sebutanTelaga Cebong. Telaga Cebong memiliki luas kurang lebih 18 hektar, telaga ini menjadi jantungnya desa Sembungan sebagai sumber air untuk keperluan warga desa dan menjadi menara air bagi warga kampung yang berada di bawah Desa Sembungan.

Telaga Cebong terletak tepat di kaki Bukit Sikunir yaitu di Desa Sembungan sebuah desa tertinggi di Jawa Tengah mencapai 2.260 m di atas permukaan laut. Keindahan Telaga Cebong ini bisa wisatawan saksikan dari atas bukit atau sekedar bersantai ditepian telaga sambil menikmati hembusan angin pegunungan.

Batu Pandang

Batu Pandang sebuah tempat wisata di Dieng yang tidak pernah lengah dari pengunjung yang ingin menyaksikan panorama alam terbaik di Dieng Plateau. Batu Pandang merupakan salah satu lokasi terindah untuk menyaksikan keindahan Telaga warna dan Telaga Pengilon serta pegunungan yang mengelilinginya dari atas bukit.

Tidak mengandung sulfur dan tidak pula berbau belerang seperti halnya Telaga Warna.

Telaga Pengilon memiliki air tawar yang gemerlap seperti cermin. Area sekeliling Telaga Pengilon ditumbuhi oleh pohon akasia serta rumput semak yang tinggi hingga menutupi tepian telaga. Pengunjung perlu berjalan pada jalanan setapak yang rindang kurang lebih 200 meter untuk mencapai Telaga Pengilon dari depan pintu masuk lokasi wisata Dieng.

A volcanic plain located 2,000m above sea level, the Dieng Plateau (usually shortened to just “ Dieng ”) is a popular getaway for Indonesians seeking a short holiday to escape the heat and city bustle of nearby Yogyakarta and Semarang.

Dieng is renowned for its sunrise-catching spots, hiking trails passing by friendly farming communities, ancient temple ruins, and colourful volcanic lakes. The word “Dieng” in Indonesian translates into “Abode of the Gods” – a fitting description of the unearthly beautiful scenery the area has to offer.

Being in the rural highlands, Dieng has comfortable sweater weather during the dry season between April and October, where temperatures reach an average high of 18.5 °C. However, this can drop to a chilly 8-10°C at night, so bring a warm jacket and hiking shoes when you visit.

Here are 4 things you can do at Dieng that make this place a must-visit the next time you’re in Central Java.

1. Catch the famous Golden Sunrise

Recommendations to catch the sunrise when you visit an attraction known for its natural beauty may sound clichéd, but your experience at Dieng will be anything but. That’s because the sunrise which you can see at Sikunir Hill ( Bukit Sikunir ), known as the Golden Sunrise , is renowned for its unusual beauty.

As the sun rises, the golden sunbeams create a stunning contrast with shadows cast by the nearby Mt Merbabu, Mt Merapi, Mt Sindoro, and Mt Sumbing. At this vantage point, you can also take incredible panoramic shots with an unobstructed bird’s-eye view of the lowland rice terraces and surrounding mountains.

To catch daybreak on time, aim to reach the observation pavilion on Sikunir Hill’s peak no later than 5AM . This requires a 20 to 40-minute trek from Sikunir Village at the base of the hill, but the route is easy and straightforward with handrails and well-defined steps.

It will be dark and cold in the early morning, but you will pass by huts that sell piping hot coffee and tea that you can grab on your way up the peak.

2. Visit Dieng’s friendly villages while trekking through nature

For a truly immersive experience, take the time to bathe in the natural scenery and explore the local villages by foot. A good starting point is Dieng Village ( Dieng Kulong ) , the main village here. Walk along Jalan Dieng  – this road connects various places of attraction, including the  Arjuna Temple Complex  and the  Twin Lakes  that lie south and southeast respectively, of the village.

As you trek, the natural mountain landscapes that surround you will be accentuated by sprawling rice terraces and lush vegetable fields, children playing in village communities, and the ruins of ancient temples. Combined with the  cool weather, you will not have to worry about sweating even in the midday sun.

If you are on the way back from  Mount Sikunir  after observing the Golden Sunrise, you will pass by  Sembungan Village . You will notice an abundance of potato plantations as this village used to be considered poor until potatoes, which thrived in the cool climate and fertile soil of the Dieng Plateau,  were introduced as crops.

3. Get IG-worthy shots at the colourful volcanic lakes

The ancient Javanese believed Dieng to be the realm of gods and deities, and the vibrant colours of the sulphur lakes make it easy to see why. There are 6 lakes in the Dieng Plateau but the most enchanting of them are a pair of lakes sitting side by side, called the  Twin Lakes  ( Telaga Kembar ).

The first lake, the  Colourful Lake ( Telaga Warna ) , is known for its colour-changing waters that vary between blue, green, and even yellow and purple at times. This occurs because of the high sulphuric concentration of the lake, which reflects various colours when exposed to direct sunlight.

The second lake, Telaga Pengilon , is named the  Mirror Lake  in Javanese for its crystal clear waters and calm surface. Avid birdwatchers can try their luck at spotting the uncommon Pacific Black Duck, which is endemic to the area.

For a good vantage point of the Twin Lakes, walk up the hill beside it, called the  Rock of the Wailing Wind  ( Batu Ratapan Angin ). The name comes from the howl made when the wind blows through gaps in the rock.

Local Dieng residents have built several amenities that make for good IG-worthy selfies and pictures with bae, including a rope bridge and swings, whilst retaining the unobstructed view. This makes for aesthetic and memorable pictures, especially during the evening golden hours.

4. Visit  some of the oldest temples in Indonesia

History lovers will be enchanted by Dieng’s ancient Hindu temples, which were built in the 8th century by the Sanjaya dynasty of the Mataram Kingdom.

The  Arjuna Temple Complex ( Kompleks Candi Ajuna )  is the most intact of Dieng’s surviving temple complexes. Hundreds of temples used to exist throughout the Dieng Plateau, but only 8 remain, as the rest have been lost with age and exposure to the elements.

Arjuna ,  Srikandi , and  Bima  are three of the most famous temples within this complex. They are named after characters in the ancient Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. Observe the intricate stone carvings of Hindu gods such as Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva on the temples, that have withstood the  passage of time .

The Dieng temples resemble the famous  Prambanan  in Yogyakarta in terms of architectural style. They are smaller than Prambanan, but are also far less crowded. This allows you to take amazing landscape shots of the temple complex without other tourists getting caught in the frame, helping your photos to achieve the road-less-travelled vibe .

Getting   to  Dieng

Visitors usually travel by car to Dieng from either  Yogyakarta  or  Semarang . The journey takes about 3 hours and is the quickest and most recommended route for travellers.

Another alternative is to take the local bus from the inter-city bus terminals in Yogyakarta or Semarang, bound for the town of  Wonosobo . The journey takes about 5 hours. Travellers from Yogyakarta will have to alight at the city of  Magelang , before transferring to Wonosobo.

Wonosobo  is the closest major town to the Dieng Plateau, and is located one hour’s drive from  Dieng Village . Due to the long travel time from Yogyakarta or Semarang, it is recommended for travellers who wish to see the Golden Sunset at  Sikunir Hill to stay overnight in a guesthouse at Dieng Village, or in a hotel at Wonosobo.

It is quite common for visitors to come to Dieng as part of a day trip from Yogyakarta or Semarang, if catching the Golden Sunrise is not on their itinerary.

Dieng is a moutainous plateau located near the town of Wonosobo in Central Java. It is thought to have been one of the oldest Hindu religious complex of Java, thriving in the first half of the 8th century, under the Sanjaya dynasty of Mataram kingdom.

The name Dieng is thought to originate from Old Javanese (Kawi) di (place, mountain) and Hyang (god), so roughly meaning “Abode of Gods”. It is nowadays usually called Dataran tinggi Dieng in Indonesian.

Historians thinks that Dieng used to be dotted with dozens if not hundreds of temples, yet only few survived until these days. They were built at a time when the kingdoms of Central Java were less powerful than we they erected Borobodur and Prambanan about a century later.

As very popular destination, Dieng gets a constant flow of local tourists and it gets very crowded in the weekend. If you can, better get there on week days.

Dieng if one of the few villages in Indonesia which regularly experiences frost especially at the peak of the dry season in July and August. Frozen morning dew is a very singular sight for Indonesian and every year the cold weather of the area makes it to the national news.

Hiking Mount Prau

In my opinion, it may be the most beautiful moutain view of all Java and an easy hike. No wonder hundreds of camper get there every weekend.

There are several ways to get to the summit, all explained on the always useful Gunung Bagging . The most practical one starts directly from Dieng village. When you are at the crossroads, the wall with the word Dieng written in huge letters on it in behind you, get up the road to Wonosobo for 100m and take the road on your left. Follow it until the hiking post. Register for 10’000Rp and take the trail. It took me 1h30 to reach the true summit, but the best views over other Javanese peaks is to be found another 15m walking further.

The view in the morning is astonishing.

Mount Prau is the highest point of this moutain but you have a long and large ridge on both sides of the summit.

Those looking for calm and fresh air could easily camp away from the crowd.

Camping gear can be rented in Dieng, but if you just want to see the view, it is far from necessary to camp overnight (just wake up a bit early and climb before dawn).

Lakes, hills and craters

I will list below various spots that be visited within one day. Those are my highlights of the area.

Sikunir hill (Bukit Sikunir)

I visited once during public holiday, there were so many people coming down from the mountain after sunrise that I got stuck for 30 minutes on the hill. Better avoid weekends.

The road from Wonosobo makes a crossroad with Dieng main street at the entrance of the village. Turn left to go to Sikunir when coming from Wonosobo. The ride takes about 20-25min by motorbike, much more by car because of the traffic !

You pay 10,000Rp for entrance and 5,000Rp to park your motorbike. There is a camping ground next to the parking.

The hike to the top of Sikunir hill takes about 30min. Put on some warm clothes, it’s windy up there.

From the top of the hill you can enjoy a large view over Dieng and Mount Sindoro. Behind the hill you are overlooking Telaga Cebon.

Sikidang crater (Kawah Sikidang)

After you enjoyed the sunrise over Dieng valley from Bukit Sikunir it’s time to go down and to eat breakfast. Potatoes are highly popular in the area, probably because the climate is cold enough to grow them.

Get back to Dieng. After 15min you should see a track on the left that goes to Kawah [Crater] Sikidang.

If you have bought a ticket to Candi Arjuna, then it includes the entrance to Kawah Sikidang (15,000Rp for local/30,000Rp for foreigner). Otherwise you can buy a single entry ticket.

The crater looks like a large boiling cauldron, an interesting natural curiosity.

Local have created some attractions around the site: quad riding, photobooth with owls or snakes, souvenirs shops …

Telaga Warna & Telaga Pergilon

Near Sikidang and on the way back to Dieng you will pass by 2 lakes, but you can also see an entrance gate from the road. The two lakes are called Telaga Warna and Telaga Pergilon.

The pricing for foreigners is stupidly high (150’000Rp, 8’500Rp for locals) so you might want to skip this place even though the view from the top is quite nice. There is another trail leading to a higher viewpoint that is less expensive but I never went there.

Like in Kawah Sikidang, local set up some attractions for tourists.

Telaga Merdada

It’s a nice lake popular for fishing. After spending 15min there talking with fishermen a guy came up and told me I have to pay 5,000Rp for entrance. There is no booth but he handed me over a ticket that looked official.

If you wanna go there from Telaga Warna go back to Dieng, and follow the main road. Once you’re out of the village take the first road on your left.

At this point, it should be 2 or 3pm and I guess you would get tired after waking up at 4am.

Wandering around

Dieng Plateau has very nice landscapes to offer and amazingly nice inhabitants to discuss with.

Exploring the area on foot or motorbike without any plan is actually an excellent plan. Remember that weather is usually way better in the morning.

Other points of interest

Tourist maps are available everywhere either in your homestay or on billboards in front of each site. There are other sites to visit than the few I listed before.

One important stuff: the weather easily cloudy in the afternoon. Better wake up early and see as much as possible in the morning.

There are a few hindu temples left in Dieng. The most preserved is called Candi Arjuna.

You will probably come to Dieng from Yogyakarta where you would have visited massives temples like Borobodur and Prambanan.

Dieng’s temples are much more modest that its southern neighbours. Yet, if you appreciate history, you will probably be interested by their filiation with the more recent large temples near Yogyakarta.

Besides Kawah Sikidang, you can see two other craters : Kawah Candrimuka and Kawah Sileri. Sileri erupted in 2017. Honnestly I wasn’t really thrilled by those 2 places but I made the mistake to visit them in the afternoon so the weather was poor as well as the view. Sikidang is more impressive.

The road to Kawah Candrimuka was really bad in September 2016. Don’t go there if you don’t trust your driving skills.

Dieng Theater that you can see on tourist maps is a theater with 60 seats that casts documentary film about Dieng.

How to come to Dieng Plateau ?

The 2 closest city with an easy access are Semarang or Yogjakarta. I never been to Dieng from Semerang but I would expect to take a bus to Wonosobo and then another one to Dieng.

From Yogyakarta

From Yogjakarta take a local bus from Jombor station to Magelang (15’000Rp). You could also take a bus heading to Semarang from Bawingan station but if it’s an express ( patas ) then you will pay to full fare to Semarang even though you get off in Magelang (40’000Rp).

In Magelang you have regular buses to Wonosobo (25’000Rp).

From Wonosobo bus station, get on a yellow angkot (city minibus) and get off at Alun-Alun park (3’000Rp).

On Jl. Pemuda in front of the Great Mosque you have small buses leaving for Dieng until approximately 4PM. I paid 12’000Rp on the way up, on the way down the bus I got was more recent and the drivers asked for a little bit more (no more than 20’000Rp).

Otherwise you can book a shared taxi ( travel ) from Yogyakarta that will pick you up at your accomodation and take you to Dieng for 70’000Rp in 4 to 5 hours.

Last solution, rent a motorbike in Yogyakarta (or Semarang) and drive by yourself. Classical short-term motorbike rental in Yogya is charged in 2018 about 75’000Rp/day. The road to Dieng is not very scenic unless on the last kilometers, it takes 4 to 5 hours depending on how much trucks you have to pass.

Motorbike rental is also widely available and Dieng but the classic rate is around 150’000Rp per day. Distances are not huge and a keen hiker could visit all the sites on foot without trouble.

Accomodation in Dieng

There are tons of homestays in Dieng or Sembungan (the village located next to Bukit Sikunir). Room price ranges from 80’000 to 150’000Rp. There is no need to book in advance unless you go there on a bank holiday.

Among the Gods at Dieng Plateau

The name ‘dieng’ which literally translates as ‘abode of the Gods’ says all you need to know about this collection small ancient temples set in the  remarkable volcanic landscape of the Dieng Plateau. The misty location, sulphurous springs and colored lakes truly make this a place of natural wonder and cultural significance.  

Come here and you will be transported back to ancient times. The temples are remnants from the glorious period of the Hindu empire in Java dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. Standing on a plateau 2,000 meters (6,500 ft) above sea level, it is the extraordinary setting of these temples which make them most remarkable. It is believed that this place was chosen as the sacred location because of the spectacular landscape.

From the bubbling mudholes, brightly colored sulphur lakes and thick mist surrounding the plateau, visitors will easily understand why the ancient Javanese considered this place to be the seat of supernatural powers. Modern visitors to the plateau are enthralled by the unearthly beauty of this spot, with many finding it quite eerie.   

Each of the small temples is named after figures in the epic tale of the Mahabharata such as Bima, Gatotkaca, Arjuna and Srikandi. It is believed that these temples used to serve as residences of Hindu priests who would spread Hindu teachings.

The Two Colorful Lakes

The natural splendors of this location are fascinating. From lakes with green and yellow hues called Telaga Warna to the pristine waters of the reflective ‘mirror’ lake called Telaga Pengilon, the natural beauty of this spot is superb. The mirror lake is particularly impressive as it offers a perfectly reflective image of the landscape.  While, the impact of logging can be seen as many of the trees surrounding the lake have been cut down, it still remains an impressive natural phenomenon.

Once you’ve walked to the top of the Dieng plateau you will feel like you are on top of the world. It will be difficult to know just where to look as the view from the plateau takes in steaming and colorful lakes, ancient temples and lush green landscape.

How to Get There

Whether you’re coming from Jakarta, Semarang, or Surabaya, the first thing you need to do is to reach Wonosobo either by train or bus since both are convenient and available anytime. Head to Mendolo Terminal in Wonosobo and then find a public minibus transportation called Mikromini for a ride straight to Dieng Plateau. Mikromini is always available in Mendolo Terminal everyday from 8.00 AM to 5.00 PM local time and the ride is just 1,5 - 2 hours away.

How to Get Around

There’s no better way to explore Dieng Plateau than on foot. However, if you’re looking for a quick method of hopping from one place to another, many locals provide motorcycle rides at affordable rates.

There are many things you can do in the Dieng Plateau. For a truly amazing spectacle, arrive at the plateau at sunrise and you will be spoiled with not one, but two amazing views of the sunrise, a ‘golden’ and a ‘silver’ sunrise. This double sunrise is a unique natural phenomenon.  Visitors take in the first ‘golden’ sunrise from a watch tower while the second ‘silver’ sunrise can be seen from the temples.

Even the drive to the plateau offers impressive sights. On the way up, visitors will pass through tobacco plantations and beautiful mountain scenery.

The Dieng people are used to visitors and warmly welcome travellers to the region.

Guide to Travel Dieng Plateau, Wonosobo

Dieng Plateau was initially not one of the places I thought to travel but stumble upon it by sheer chance and it became part of the must visit for me as I make my way from Jakarta to Yogyakarta, making pit stops along the way. You see I was hoping to get a good slice of Java itself, taking it slow, knowing the people and understanding the place.

Lucky for me or not, I was there during the rainy season of December in Indonesia. Therefore, I find myself in quite some rainfall especially in the evenings, but boy, in Dieng Plateau, it is another league of its own. It rained the whole day practically from morning to sundown. It was raining when I reached at night and by noon the next day it started to rain again till I leave, I don’t know when did it stop.

Still do not to let it dampen you on that, I must say Dieng Plateau hold its own charm despite being veiled by the rain fall. If you happen to be here during the dry season or better weather, I am sure you have even better time than me!

Where is it

Dieng Plateau is situated in Central Java, nearby Wonosobo. Most people in Indonesia calls it Dieng. It is a highland of 2,000 m. Even though nearby to Wonosobo, it is actually located in the regency of Banjarnegara.

If you want to see something different from the rest of Java in Indonesia, here is the place. It almost somewhat exists on its own up here in the highlands. If you explore around you will be trekking through rolling hills of plantations and mountains flanking from all sides in the horizon. A fellow traveller whom I met there commented: “At this view (while looking from the road vast rolling hills of vegetable fields), it almost seem like I am back in France.” And if you are here during off peak season, you will find yourself one of the only handfuls of travellers wandering around, making this place exclusive and off your usual beaten path.

When is the best time to go

Definitely not during the wet season like me but during the dry season of April to October . You may find more people than the usual sparse crowd during the peak season of June-August there.

Also be warned that the temperatures in Dieng can be quite cold being in the highlands, therefore remember to pack proper clothing. The guesthouses here are bare and minimal, therefore do not expect any kind of heating, a sleeping bag of your own would help tremendously in your sleep.

What to see

There are many craters (kawah) around here for you to explore, like Sikidang Crater (Kawah Sikidang) which is more popular, and there are others like Kawah Candradimuka and Kawah Sileri.

Arjuna Temples Complex – Candi-candi (ancient temples) dotted around, the most famous being the Arjuna complex not because of its magnificence, what not with the likes of Borobudur and Prambanan not too far off but for its really old age. Here you can find Candi Arjuna, Candi Setiyaki and Candi Bima. They are one of the oldest temples in Indonesia, dating back to 8th century built by the Sanjaya dynasty. It can be a bit disheartening to see the remaining small temples around the complex but keep in mind that it had stood the test of time for a long, long time.

Telaga Warna (colored lake) – not to be mistaken for it’s name for it is only in hues of blue and maybe some slight green. Try to walk up the hill beside it to catch a top view of the lake which can be quite beautiful if you caught it during the right light of day.

Definitely trek and walk around Dieng Plateau highlands . We were being adventurous and thought to walk to all the places on the map for exploration, and it took us a good walk along the main road and then up the hills of houses and then deep into the vegetables fields and plantations. Along these treks, you will find yourself surrounded by rolling fields of greens, hardworking locals smiling at you, local houses and kids running around and also other ancient structures dotted around.

Catch the sunrise at Sikunir Hill – rent a car or motorbike to the foothill of Sekunir, then it is about another 30-40 minutes hike up (good workout to wake you up) in time for the sunrise. Here you can see the sun slowly lit up the hills of terraced rice fields with dark mountains as backdrop

Or catch the sunrise at Perahu Hill – This one you have to start earlier about 3 am and rent a vehicle to the foothill and hike up for about 2 hours. The view here is, of course, more magnificent as it takes more energy and effort.

Where to stay

You may find a handful of homestays, hotels or guesthouses by the roadside once you reach Dieng Plateau by bus as it will drop you at the main road. I chose to stay near Dieng Plateau * for easy access to the trekking and sites. When I was last there, there were barely good choices of accommodations but now as tourism has grown, there are new modern guesthouses like the Tani Jiwo Hostel * or in the cozy Green Savannah Homestay * .  Alternatively, you may also stay in Wonosobo * and take the minibus up.

What and where to eat

Local specialties are Keripik Jamur , a crispy fried champignon or Carica in syrup, a sweet drink.

How to get around

Dieng can be small and big depending where you want to explore. The usual tourist circuit is doable by foot if you want to take a loop around and stop by at those places to visit. If you want to go a little further, catch a local minibus and stop off at junctions that you need and cover the rest with trekking on hills and plantations.

How to get there

From Jakarta to Dieng Get a train from Jakarta to Purwokerto and then take a bus to Wonosobo. At nearing Wonosobo, ask to be drop off at a junction near Klenteng where you will catch another public minibus to Dieng.

From Yogyakarta (Jogja) to Dieng Get a bus to Magelang and then switch to another bus to Wonosobo. Then at Wonosobo, also catch a minibus to go up to Dieng.

• Perubahan jadwal travel melebihi batas yang di tentukan di atas, apabila sudah di lakukan pembayaran sebelumnya maka akan di potong biaya sebesar 50%. Untuk high season akan dipotong sebesar 100%.
• Pembatalan sepihak oleh calon penumpang maksimal 6 jam sebelum keberangkatan pada low season Jika terjadi pada high season atau tuslah sebaiknya pada H-1.
• Pembatalan secara sepihak oleh calon penumpang akan ada biaya 100% dari harga total jika melebihi dari waktu yang di tentukan Apabila terjadi pembayaran sebelumnya maka dinyatakan hangus.
• cancel sepihak oleh calon penumpang saat travel sudah di tempat penjemputan maka ada biaya pembatalan sebesar 100% dari harga total. Namun jika terjadi pembayaran sebelumnya maka akan dianggap hangus.
