Lighthouse Point Disney Cruise Line Private Island: Opening Date & First Sailings, Details

disney cruise to their private island

Disney Cruise Line’s new private island destination is Lighthouse Point, located on Eleuthera in the Bahamas. This post covers everything we know about DCL’s counterpart to Castaway Cay, including the opening date, when preview & inaugural sailings to Lighthouse Point will happen, plus full details & concept art. ( Updated November 4, 2023 .)

Created in close collaboration with local artists and advisors, Disney Cruise Line’s vibrant island retreat at Lighthouse Point will be a unique celebration of Bahamian culture brought to life with the quality and service of a Disney vacation.

Keep reading to discover all the latest details about this relaxing beach escape designed with families in mind, infused with the color and energy of Bahamian artistry, and developed with a commitment to conservation at its core.

When Disney Cruise Line guests arrive at Lighthouse Point, they’ll be greeted by distinctive, sweeping architecture in bright, saturated hues. This style was inspired by nature and created in partnership between Walt Disney Imagineering and local artists.

The curvilinear buildings will at first appear as Bahamian shells scattered along the shoreline. Upon closer inspection, guests will discover artistic expressions of the native flora and fauna of The Bahamas and the pageantry and history of Junkanoo parades. Throughout the destination, references to playful folklore characters will evoke the warmth and charm of the local culture.

Respect for the environment is at the heart of the design at Lighthouse Point. At least 90 percent of the destination’s electricity needs will be met by an onsite solar array, the pier was designed to avoid the need for dredging and elevated walkways will help limit impact on the landscape.

Let’s start with a first look at the arrival point, Mabrika Cove, with brand-new concept art released by Disney Cruise Line in November 2023.

“Mabrika” means “welcome” in Taino, the language of the Lucayans, who are considered the indigenous people of The Bahamas. While the language is no longer used, a few words remain – one of them being “Mabrika.” At this colorful arrival point, guests will immediately experience the warmth of Bahamian culture.

The Goombay Cultural Center (pictured below) will embody the essence of “Junkanoo,” a Bahamian festival filled with joyous music and vibrant parades that will come to life in many ways across Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Goombay is one of the traditional music styles of The Bahamas, involving singing, dancing and drumming.

The brilliantly colored cultural pavilion and its Junkanoo-inspired arch will invite guests to embrace the traditions of The Bahamas, along with the sights, sounds and spirit of the country’s signature festival.

There will be plenty of family entertainment in store at Triton’s Trumpet Stage. And fun fact: The gazebo’s name is inspired by one of the stunning natural wonders found among the Bahamian beaches – a large, spiral seashell commonly called “Triton’s Trumpet.” And for you Disney fans, if Triton sounds familiar, you might recognize it as the name of the mighty king from the beloved Disney animated classic “The Little Mermaid.”

Of course, we must mention the shopping opportunities! Treasures of Eleuthera will be the retail shop featuring locally made gifts and artisan crafts. What I really love is how the shop will spotlight Bahamian artists through an array of unique items that families will be able to bring home with them as a special keepsake.

And now, the question you might have been asking … is there going to be an adults-only space on the island? The answer is yes! I’m delighted to share that Serenity Bay will be a relaxing retreat exclusively for adults 18 years of age and older. For those of you who have sailed with Disney Cruise Line before, you might recognize Serenity Bay as a must-visit location on Disney Castaway Cay! At Disney Lookout Cay, Serenity Bay will feature a tranquil beach experience with a dining area and private cabanas available for reservation.

disney cruise to their private island

Disney Cruise Line’s visitors to Lighthouse Point will have the opportunity to be surrounded by the wonders of nature and get a glimpse into the efforts taking place to conserve wildlife and their unique island habitats.

At Lighthouse Point, families will enjoy a day of fun in the sun as they relax on pristine beaches, embark on active adventures and discover authentic Bahamian storytelling alongside favorite Disney characters. As with DCL’s other private island, Castaway Cay, Lighthouse Point will offer activities and areas for every age group.

Families can relax and play along white sandy beaches and turquoise waters at the expansive family beach on the east side of the Lighthouse Point, which will be centrally located near market-style dining, recreation and other amenities.

A Bahamian art and culture pavilion featuring special programs and local artists will provide DCL visitors to Lighthouse Point opportunities to learn and celebrate the traditions and natural beauty of The Bahamas.

disney cruise to their private island

Lighthouse Point’s interactive family water play area will include two slides, water drums, fountains and more. This play area will also feature a dedicated space for toddlers.

North of the family area will be Lighthouse Point’s adult beach. This stretch of sun-drenched serenity will offer Disney Cruise Line guests a dedicated dining area for convenient access to food and drinks throughout the day, plus six private cabanas available by reservation.

Children ages 3 to 12 will splash and play at a kids’ club under the care of Disney Cruise Line counselors. The kids’ club will offer a splash pad inspired by favorite undersea creatures from “The Little Mermaid,” plenty of shade, as well as a dedicated dining area.

Set away from the activity of the main family area, a peaceful beach along Lighthouse Point’s southwestern shore will be lined with 20 premium family cabanas available for DCL guests to rent, including four double cabanas that accommodate larger groups and offer massage services.

Additional recreational activities will be available for guests of all ages, including a covered gaming pavilion, volleyball court, gaga ball pit, watercraft and bicycle rentals, nature trails for hiking and biking, and more. New Port Adventures developed in partnership with local tour operators will take guests beyond Lighthouse Point to explore the rich culture and breathtaking beauty of Eleuthera.

Lighthouse Point is being thoughtfully designed to provide a hassle-free experience for families, including complimentary beach essentials (towels, chairs and umbrellas and lunch), and tram transportation.

First Sailings to Lighthouse Point Private Island

disney cruise to their private island

In June 2024, Disney Cruise Line will debut its new private island destination, Lighthouse Point, on Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Cruises aboard the Disney Magic from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will visit this vibrant beach retreat designed with families in mind, infused with the color and energy of Bahamian artistry, and developed with sustainability and conservation at its core.

A three-night preview cruise on the Disney Magic from Fort Lauderdale is scheduled for June 6, 2024 and will feature a sneak peek of Lighthouse Point with limited access to some areas. Throughout Summer 2024, Lighthouse Point will be a featured stop on select three-, four- and five-night sailings to The Bahamas and Caribbean on the Disney Magic out of Fort Lauderdale. These South Florida-based itineraries will vary stops between Lighthouse Point and Castaway Cay, with five special sailings including both Disney Cruise Line island destinations.

A 7-night inaugural cruise to Lighthouse Point aboard the Disney Fantasy from Port Canaveral, Florida will occur on June 8, 2024. This ultimate Disney Cruise Line island destination itinerary will feature not one, but two stops at Lighthouse Point … and that’s not all! One day of sun-drenched serenity at Castaway Cay also awaits your family on this once-in-a-lifetime sailing.

One special 10-night Southern Caribbean sailing aboard the Disney Fantasy will give your family another opportunity to visit Lighthouse Point with additional visits to the islands of Antigua, St. Lucia, Dominica, Tortola and Castaway Cay.

In terms of commentary, I don’t have a lot to add. The concept art makes this look really nice, like a cross between Castaway Cay and Aulani. We love both Castaway Cay and Aulani, and I’m sure this will be awesome. Having the private island lean more towards authenticity is great, even if I do enjoy the Imagineered vibe of Castaway Cay. (That reminds me a bit of Typhoon Lagoon, whereas I suspect this will not.)

All in all, we expect Lighthouse Point to be a great destination for Disney Cruise Line guests. Based on the description, it sounds like DCL and Imagineering have learned lessons from what worked and didn’t with Castaway Cay, and this is essentially the next generation of that. It appears that practical improvements have been made, giving Lighthouse Point a greater sense of fun and luxuriousness, along with the increased emphasis on authenticity. That’s just my impression based on the concept art and press release, though.

disney cruise to their private island

I stopped paying close attention to the Lighthouse Point saga a while ago, but have nevertheless been expecting an update on this for the last couple of years . You might recall that ex-Imagineer Joe Rohde was the face of the Lighthouse Point project when it was first announced almost 4 years ago.

Renowned for his culturally-respectful work on Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Aulani Resort & Spa in Hawaii, Villages Natures in Paris, and a variety of other independent projects, Joe Rohde was unquestionably Disney’s best ambassador when it comes to conservation and projects that highlight cultures.

When Lighthouse Point was announced, Joe Rohde shared how he was embarking on an in-depth cultural tour of the Bahamas meeting with local artists and cultural experts. He explored cultural sites across New Providence and Eleuthera, from Junkanoo shacks to noted art galleries, gathering samples, hearing from locals, and determining the best approach for telling their stories.

If anyone could “sell” a project like this to conservation groups or those otherwise opposed or on the fence, Joe Rohde is that person. He has an effortless way of passionately speaking about pretty much anything, doing so in an earnest and engaging way. He comes across as genuine and easy to trust. Unlike some stuffed shirt, if he says Disney will focus on culture and conservation, you believe him. Or at least, you want to believe him .

disney cruise to their private island

At that time, Lighthouse Point was a controversial project that was still awaiting an Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan, along with approval by the Government of The Bahamas and public consultation. There was a lot of backlash pre-pandemic, but the plan was to open Lighthouse Point by last year or this year. Obviously, construction delays were an inevitability with the border closures and cruise industry essentially pausing for over a year.

There was also Joe Rohde’s “retirement” in late 2020. At that point, all of the design work and assessments would’ve been completed, but it seemed like Rohde was still important as the face of the project–just as he had been with Aulani until (and even after) its opening. That along with everything else led us to wonder whether Disney Cruise Line had abandoned Lighthouse Point.

Disney Cruise Line aggressively proceeding with its fleet expansion (not to mention the surprise acquisition of another partially-completed ship) made it likely that Lighthouse Point was going forward. Still, we hadn’t heard anything about it and were surprised when no updates were offered at the most recent D23 Expo.

disney cruise to their private island

Ultimately, Lighthouse Point looks like it’ll be a fantastic destination for Disney Cruise Line guests. The environmental issues it poses do give me pause, and I hope Disney wasn’t just paying face to these issues in order to secure approval. While the company’s track record with Aulani is good, this is a bit different in nature. Hopefully Disney is sincere in its statements that Lighthouse Point will be minimally disruptive to the natural environment and that the island destination will be used in an environmentally-responsible way.

Again, Lighthouse Point will open for Disney Cruise Line guests on select sailings in summer 2024. Stay tuned for more details about inaugural itineraries, signature entertainment, dining, retail and excursions, and additional information.

I have tremendous respect for Joe Rohde and enjoy everything he’s designed so I’m sure this will be wonderful—but I love Castaway Cay (and it’s heavy Imagineering) so much that I am just not excited about it’s alternative. I assume we will eventually get there on an itinerary that visits both islands, but in my heart of hearts, I’d rather double dip at CC.

The only thing that really surprised me was that they didn’t build way more cabanas. I think at minimum, even if they ran out of coastline, they could have gotten away with a second row “obstructed view” that cost slightly less and still printed money on them. I guess I should be congratulating Disney on the decision not to sacrifice more shoreline for many so they can squeeze out an extra (estimated) $3000/cabana per week.

' src=

I’m still dreaming they’ll build an Aulani-type resort in the Caribbean for us non-cruisers!

' src=

I have mixed thoughts on this, which probably reflect my overall ambivalence about Caribbean cruising in general. Part of me has an aversion to the concept of “traveling” to a place that’s innately fairly artificial. On future sailings that will no doubt visit both private islands, the idea of a guest saying they “went to the Bahamas” seems somewhat dubious since they will have never left the Disney bubble.

On the other hand, I fully understand that the areas around most “real” Caribbean cruise ports are often crudely commercial and don’t reflect the people, culture, beauty, or history of those islands (imagine a tour of US national parks where your only activity is stopping to shop, eat, and ride aerial tramways in gateway towns like Estes Park, Gatlinburg, or Springdale). And stepping ashore with thousands of other cruisers doesn’t exactly enhance the ambience or authenticity. Thinking about Nassau specifically, the cruise port-adjacent zone is tacky/industrial, whereas excursions to Atlantis or Blue Lagoon island are basically just upcharged versions of Castaway Cay.

Now of course I get the irony of griping about artifice on a Disney blog site, and I did enjoy most aspects of my one and only voyage on DCL. But leaning into suspended disbelief within the spectacularly imaginineered pretenses of the theme parks just feels different to me than sailing hundreds of miles to a place where you’re really not “there.”

' src=

What I don’t understand is at Lighthouse Point you can rent a Cabana are they letting people stay on the island? I can’t imagine renting for the few hours you get to stay like at Castaway.

' src=

We are planning to sail in July 24 so maybe we will get lucky and get to go to Lighthouse Point. It looks really relaxing

' src=

Is the plan for DCL to replace Castaway Cay entirely with Lighthouse Point? If not, has there been talk about certain sailings including Lighthouse in lieu of or in addition to Castaway?

' src=

They need the second private island with the growing fleet. I have no clue if certain itineraries will include both stops, but I’m guessing so at some point (albeit maybe not in 2024). That would be a popular itinerary for DCL diehards.

' src=

We are taking the plunge and giving DCL a try this coming December, so this won’t be available yet. Oh well. It looks cool, and I’ll be curious to hear about it. I had no idea they were even close to completing this.

Things You Need to Know Before You Visit Disney’s Private Island Castaway Cay

Sharing is caring!

If you ask most people who have sailed on a Disney Cruise what was the best port of call they will have one answer for you.

Castaway Cay.

Disney’s Private Island, Castaway Cay has been delighting guests since the first passengers sailed on a Disney Cruise in 1998.

disneydreamcruisepricess

The Disney difference extends to their private island. Everything is taken care of to make your time on Castaway Cay very special.

Disney Makes Everything So Easy

Disembarking at Castaway Cay is an absolute breeze.

Unlike many other cruise line private islands Castaway Cay has a custom-built dock. This means you simply step off your Disney Ship right onto the island.

Castaway Cay

No need for that tedious tender boat process that many other cruise line private islands have.

To create the Castaway Cay dock, a 1,700-foot channel around 35 feet deep needed to be created. This channel ranges from 200 to 400 feet wide.

The transformation of Castaway Cay into Disney’s Private Island paradise took around 18 months and cost $25 million.

It takes tremendous skill to navigate this channel to dock at Castaway Cay. Although the Captain always tries his best, sometimes due to weather conditions, it is not possible to dock here.

Safety is always the first consideration – although when it happens it is disappointing when the ship can’t dock.

disney cruise to their private island

Happily most times the ship does make it to the dock!

Disney even makes it super easy to get to the beach. Whether you want to go to the Family Beach or Serenity Bay, the adults-only beach, you can either walk or take a tram.

You can be claiming that free beach lounger within minutes of stepping off the ship. Just remember to pick up a towel from the dock – that is provided for you too.

disney cruise to their private island

There is one thing we suggest you bring with you to Castaway Cay as well as sunscreen. The sand may look perfect, but some areas can be pretty painful to walk on with bare feet!

disney cruise to their private island

You Don’t Need to Spend a Dime on Castaway Cay

You can easily visit Castaway Cay and not spend any additional money at all.

Food and non-alcoholic drinks are available for no extra charge. You can of course always buy drinks from the bar if you want something a little more exotic.

disney cruise to their private island

The food is barbecue style – and you can choose from three different locations.

Cookies One is located closest to the ship on the Family Beach and tends to be less busy than Cookies Two which is further in but also on the Family Beach.

They both serve the same menu.

There are plenty of places in the shade to sit down and eat.

There is also a Serenity Bay BBQ – if you can go here then this really is the best choice, even though it is the furthest away from the ship.

It’s the least crowded and sometimes has dishes you won’t find at the other locations.

All of the Castaway Cay BBQ venues serve the same menu (although you may get lucky at Serenity Bay).

disney cruise to their private island

There is a selection of salads and fruit as you first enter the buffet area.

You will also usually find Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Ribeye Steaks, Rotisserie Chicken, Cajun Mahi Mahi, and BBQ Pork Ribs.

If you have special dietary needs then be sure to mention this and a Cast Member will help you.

Disney Castaway Cay packing

The Ultimate Guide – What You Need in Your Beach Bag!

There is a self-serve drinks station, just like on the pool deck of the ship for you to get soft drinks and water. There is also self-serve ice cream.

With all your essential food and beverage needs included, you can just sit on a lounge chair, enjoy the ocean and not spend an extra dime.

But You Can Spend Spend Spend

Just because you don’t need to spend any money, doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t! You can run up quite a bill depending upon which activities you choose to do on Castaway Cay.

disney cruise to their private island

One of the most sought-after things on Castaway Cay is the Cabanas. Your very own private Cabana on either the Family or Adult Beach.

Even if you are prepared to pay the price of a Castaway Cay Cabana, actually getting one is a bit like winning the lottery. There is far more demand than there is supply!

Really there is little chance of securing a Cabana Rental unless you are sailing Concierge or have Pearl Castaway Club status.

It doesn’t hurt to try though so always put your name down at Guest Serves on the waitlist.

Miracles do happen.

disney cruise to their private island

If you do manage to get a Castaway Cay Cabana then you have your very own piece of paradise.

A Cabana rental on the Castaway Cay Family Beach is $549 for up to 6 guests. But you do get free sunscreen!

There are also a number of different Castaway Cay Activities to choose from.

These range from renting a tube to float in the ocean to parasailing!

Another very popular activity is Castaway Ray’s Stingray Excursion where you can get up close and personal with these fascinating creatures.

disney cruise to their private island

It is a lot of fun to snorkel on Castaway Cay , even if you have never done it before.

There is a specially created snorkeling lagoon where you will see lots of fish and some rather more unusual underwater sights.

Maybe even Mickey himself.

disney cruise to their private island

If you don’t want to bring your own equipment, there are rentals available on Castaway Cay:

  • Snorkeling Equipment including mask and flippers are $34 for adults, and $18 for children aged 5 to 9 for the whole day
  • A Castaway Cay Double Dip 2-day rental is $46 for adults and $26 for children.
  • Float Rentals are $13 for the whole day
  • Bicycle Rentals are $13 per hour for all ages.
  • Castaway Cay Getaway Package – includes snorkeling and floats for the whole day and 1-hour bike rental, $46 for adults, $26 per child
  • There is a Castaway Cay Double Dip 2-day price of $60 for adults and $33 for children.

Of course, you really don’t have to spend anything extra – you can just spend your time relaxing on the sand, swimming in the ocean or having fun on the waterslide at Pelican Plunge !

There is a Lot To Do on Castaway Cay – But Maybe You Want to Do Nothing at All

There are many activities that you can do on Castaway Cay. If you aren’t the sitting down on a beach type of person, then you will have plenty of options to enjoy.

You can even run a 5K on Castaway Cay! It isn’t an official event right now, but you can still find out the route and get your medal when you complete the challenge.

However, whilst you will definitely want to make the most of your day, sometimes the thing to do is to plan to do very little.

disney cruise to their private island

Even though your little piece of paradise is probably being shared with a few thousand others, it rarely ever feels like that.

Snag your beach lounger or hammock and enjoy the peace for a while. Even take your chair right up to the shore and let the waves lap gently over your feet.

You May See a Pirate or a Mouse

Of course, it simply wouldn’t be Disney if there weren’t characters on the island.

disney cruise to their private island

Although you will never see a Disney Princess getting her toes in the sand, you will most likely see Mickey and Minnie Mouse in their beach wear.

Goody and Pluto are also ofter around on the dock. In recent times even Olaf has been known to make an appearance without melting.

One character who usually appears is Captain Jack Sparrow.

The Flying Dutchman may have long since sailed away, but everyone’s favorite pirate can often be seen on the dock of Castaway Cay.

Adults Have Their Own Space on Disney’s Private Island

Adults are very well cared for on Disney Cruises, and Castaway Cay is no exception.

The Grown Ups have their very own beach on Disney’s Private Island.

disney cruise to their private island

Don’t even think of trying to relax on Castaway Cay Serenity Bay unless you are over 18.

There are Cast Members there to check your ID!

The adult-only beach is the furthest away from the dock, but there is a convenient tram to get your there without too much effort!

Of course, you don’t have to go far to find food or drinks.

There is a Serenity Bay BBQ and the Air Bar is a great place to check out the adult beverage menu.

The classic on the Castaway Air Bar menu is the Castaway Cay Konk Kooler. This is made with rum, coconut cream, pineapple, passion fruit, and orange juices.

You Can Even Get Married on Castaway Cay

Want to get married in Paradise? Then why not have your wedding on Disney’s Castaway Cay?

You can exchange vows on Disney’s Private island in front of up to 100 of your chosen guests! It is a fabulous location to be a Disney Bride.

Many things are included in the basic cost of the ceremony and there are plenty of opportunities for upgrades.

Including adding appearances by Mickey and Minnie – if their schedules and your budget allow it!

If you are tempted you can find out more details at Disney Weddings .

The History of Castaway Cay is Surprising

Castaway Cay has a less-than-desirable past.

Things were not always exactly within the bounds of the law before the Mouse arrived.

disney cruise to their private island

There are unconfirmed rumors that pirates once lived on the island.

It is highly likely that the real ancestors of the fictional Captain Jack Sparrow lived on the island.

However, its more recent history is most definitely on record.

Before Disney arrived and transformed it into Castaway Cay, the island was known as Gorda Cay.

Unfortunately, it attracted the attention of drug smugglers.

The fact that it already had an airstrip made it an ideal place for drug smugglers to use to import their goods into Florida.

disney cruise to their private island

Now the airstrip has a much better use – you can rent a bike and ride down the wide concrete path!

One Visit To Castaway Cay is Never Enough

disney cruise to their private island

One thing is for certain. One visit to Disney’s Castaway Cay is never enough.

Some people are lucky and they sail on one of the Disney Cruises which has two port stops in Castaway Cay.

Affectionately known as the Castaway Cay Double Dip, there are always a number of special cruises each year which stop twice at Disney’s private island.

However, it is for sure that once you have spent any time on Castaway Cay you are going to want to return again!

A guide to cruise line private islands: What they are and what you can expect

Ashley Kosciolek

What is a private island? Perhaps you're having visions of relaxing on a secluded beach, cocktail in hand, without another person in sight. That might be true in some cases. But, when you're on a cruise, private islands are only private in the sense that they're exclusive to passengers on ships that call there.

If you're looking at a Caribbean or Bahamas itinerary and see a listing for an unfamiliar port — such as Great Stirrup Cay, Half Moon Cay or Perfect Day at CocoCay — it could be a cruise-line-owned or -operated private island.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Most major cruise lines either have their own private islands or share one with other brands under the same corporate umbrella. (The only one that doesn't is Celebrity Cruises .) Some of the islands are owned by the lines that visit them, while others are leased by the lines from the countries that own them.

The main function of these oases, most of which are located in the Bahamas, is to provide cruisers with a relaxing and exclusive experience that's clean, contained and carefully quality-controlled.

If you're looking for more information about the private island experience, as well as a list of these private islands, which lines operate them and what you can expect when you call there, you've come to the right place.

Pros and cons of cruise line private islands

disney cruise to their private island

If you love a good beach day, you'll likely be a fan of cruise line private islands. In most cases, the beach (or beaches) is the central attraction of the private island. Most activities center on sunning and swimming, water sports or other outdoor pursuits.

All cruise line private islands feature alfresco bars, souvenir shops and beach equipment rentals. Some islands also offer amusements like zip lines and water parks, kiddie play areas and rental cabanas of varying levels of luxury. Available shore excursions may include options like swimming with stingrays, jet ski rides and snorkeling.

Lunch is included on almost all private islands, usually in the form of a barbecue buffet. For purchases, most islands accept cruise cards as payment, which will add charges for things like alcohol to your onboard account (so you don't need to bring cash).

Bathrooms and outdoor showers for washing off sand are conveniently located.

But don't set your standards too high for your private island escape. The islands are small and can get crowded. That's especially true if you're on a megaship or if there are multiple ships calling on the same day. If you can't hack it in the sun all day, there isn't as much else to do compared to calling on a port that's open to the public.

Although the somewhat sheltered vibe is nice when you just want a day at the beach, it also means your time ashore is likely to be devoid of cultural immersion. Excursions and souvenirs are limited. If you prefer to visit populated islands and engage with the people who live there, a private island may feel like a wasted port day on your itinerary.

Also, while more than half of the industry's private islands have docks, the rest require ships to anchor nearby and shuttle passengers back and forth from ship to shore. Be prepared for queues if you want to get off the ship right away; the lengthy process can detract from the time you're able to spend enjoying the port. Tender boats are not always accessible to travelers with mobility difficulties.

Private islands are a cruise fan favorite and are stops on the majority of Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries. Set your expectations correctly and you're sure to have a relaxing day on the beach.

Castaway Cay (Disney Cruise Line)

disney cruise to their private island

This private island, owned by Disney Cruise Line , spans about 1,000 acres in the Bahamas. On a visit there, passengers can take a free tram from the dock to one of three stops that provide access to the kids area, family beach, waterslides and the adults-only area. Castaway Cay is also walkable.

Cruisers can choose to go back on board to have lunch, or they can snag a free barbecue meal at one of two buffets on shore.

Shore excursions are available, including paddleboating and personal watercraft tours. Rentals are also available for snorkeling gear, water floats and bicycles. If you're an active traveler, try biking the loop to the island's lookout point or signing up for the Castaway Cay 5K run; every participant earns a medal.

Great Stirrup Cay (Norwegian Cruise Line)

disney cruise to their private island

Great Stirrup Cay, which is owned and operated by NCL , is a tender port that stretches across 250 acres in the Bahamas, about 140 miles east of Miami.

It offers plenty of beach areas with loungers, including a family beach area, as well as private beach villas for cruisers booked in Norwegian's The Haven. There's also a zip line.

The island's free buffets offer a selection of food at lunchtime, including hot dogs and hamburgers, pizza, fruit and desserts, as well as drinks.

Half Moon Cay (Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line)

disney cruise to their private island

Half Moon Cay — located in the Bahamas, about 100 miles southeast of Nassau — is owned by Carnival Corporation and plays host to both Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America ships.

Although offerings are similar, there are some nuances depending on which line is in port on a given day. For example, when Holland America is anchored, drink packages are available on shore, private cabana and villa rentals are more expensive, and passengers can opt for a seafood lunch from The Lobster Shack. (The island is a tender port that can accommodate up to two ships at a time, but there will never be a day when one is a Holland America ship and one is Carnival.)

Water sports rentals and shore excursions such as horseback riding, snorkeling and biking/hiking tours are available for booking. For anyone wanting a lazy beach day, Half Moon Cay boasts 2.5 miles of white sand for lounging and sunbathing. There are also children's areas for the kids to splash and play.

Harvest Caye (Norwegian Cruise Line)

disney cruise to their private island

Harvest Caye, Norwegian's second private island, opened in 2016, providing a plethora of outdoor activities for visitors.

Found just a few miles offshore from Placencia, Belize, the 75-acre property offers both a beach with loungers and private villas, and a lagoon pool with a swim-up bar, lounge chairs and private cabanas. The island also features shops selling local wares, a zip line, a lighthouse that you can climb, a kids splash park and a wildlife sanctuary that includes birds, butterflies and snakes. Shore excursions include options like parasailing and kayaking.

Unlike most other private islands, Harvest Caye doesn't offer any free food options on shore. Passengers will find an outpost of Jimmy Buffett-affiliated LandShark Bar & Grill, but all the food and drinks come with a fee, and you can't pay with your cruise card. Anyone not wishing to spend the extra cash can head back to the ship for a meal.

Ocean Cay Marine Reserve (MSC Cruises)

disney cruise to their private island

MSC Cruises gave Ocean Cay Marine Reserve a total makeover after it purchased the island from the Bahamian government. What, for years, had been a manmade industrial wasteland about 20 miles south of Bimini is now an island teeming with new plant life and clean beaches. That includes two beach areas for families, complete with shallow water and a floating submarine attraction.

Even with all the construction, the space still feels natural and untouched -- a far cry from some of the more gimmicky private islands operated by other cruise lines.

Ocean Cay is outfitted with a dock, which eliminates the need for tendering. Shore excursions are available, and free eats are served at the island's food court buffet. If you'd like to branch out a bit, try something from one of the multiple food trucks or the Lighthouse Bar (for an extra fee).

On sailings where the ship stays late into the night, you won't want to miss the lighthouse light show and beach party. Trust me when I say it's the highlight of a call there.

Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal Caribbean)

disney cruise to their private island

Royal Caribbean 's Perfect Day at CocoCay (formerly just CocoCay) in the Bahamas recently underwent a massive expansion that added several free eateries, bars for added-fee drinks, exclusive villa and beach club areas, and stands selling souvenirs and treats like funnel cakes.

In addition to the beaches that are open to all passengers, the cruise line private island boasts a massive water park that's ideal for families, complete with a wave pool and several waterslides — including the tallest one in North America.

A tram will take you wherever you'd like to go on the massive 125-acre island, which now features a dock so tendering is no longer required. Despite the enviable vistas afforded by the multiple beaches and pools, some of the best views can be had from a ride on a tethered helium balloon that will take you 450 feet up in the air.

Princess Cays (Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise line)

disney cruise to their private island

The tender island of Princess Cays, found on Eleuthera in the Bahamas (about 70 miles from Nassau), covers 40 acres. It's operated mainly by Princess Cruises — hence, the name — but Carnival Cruise Line (which shares the Carnival Corp. parent company with Princess) also calls there.

In addition to a half-mile of sandy beaches with loungers and umbrellas, cruisers can enjoy private clamshells and bungalows for rent, as well as a free beach barbecue. Walkways make it easy for visitors to meander from one area to another, and excursions abound, including stingray encounters, banana boat rides and fishing, among other pursuits.

The destination also houses a selection of shops, water sports rentals and bars for enjoying a cold adult beverage or two. If you'd like to drink those beverages in peace, you can drop your children in at the small, supervised kids club area, which offers a playground and a wading pool.

Other tailored shoreside cruise experiences

disney cruise to their private island

Private islands aren't the only ways cruise lines offer curated experiences to their passengers on shore. Several brands have developed private areas within larger destinations.

For example, Virgin Voyages developed the Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas in partnership with Resorts World. When a Virgin ship is docked, its passengers have exclusive use of the Beach Club. Passengers who visit with other cruise lines can purchase day passes as long as a Virgin ship isn't in port.

Royal Caribbean exclusively uses Labadee, a beach area in Haiti, as a private location reserved for its passengers only. Because Labadee occupies only part of an inhabited island, access to the island is not exclusive to Royal Caribbean passengers, but access to the Labadee area is.

Although MSC Cruises initially spruced up Abu Dhabi's Sir Bani Yas area, it is also used by other cruise lines. The same goes for Taino Bay in the Dominican Republic, which is the latest private area developed for cruise passengers.

Purpose-built ports are another way lines provide cruisers with a homogenized experience that extends from ship to shore.

Ports developed by cruise lines specifically for their own use include Icy Strait Point, which was built in partnership between Norwegian Cruise Line and the Hoonah Totem Corporation in Alaska; Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, Mahogany Bay in Roatan and Grand Turk in Turks and Caicos, all developed by Carnival; and Falmouth, Jamaica, which was originally built to accommodate Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class vessels but which is now used by several lines.

Like private islands or private areas on islands, these stops offer clean bathrooms, shore excursions, shopping, dining and other activities for a fee. What sets them apart is that they're much smaller. They're developed with a plethora of things to do and purchase right in the immediate terminal area, encouraging passengers to stick close to the ship as opposed to venturing out to a nearby beach or resort.

Disney Cruise Line’s NEW Private Island – What We Know So Far – UPDATED

Disney Cruise Line’s current fleet of five ships will become a fleet of eight ships within the next few years. To accommodate the associated passenger influx, in May 2019 Disney purchased a second major property in the Bahamas, Lighthouse Point , to be a supplement to its current private island Castaway Cay.

Disney recently announced that Lighthouse Point will be opening to cruise guests during the summer of 2024.

Lighthouse point is a 700-acre parcel of land on the southern tip of the island of Eleuthera, about 132 miles southeast of Castaway Cay.

History of the Agreement | The Guest Experience on the Island | The Magic and Fantasy to Visit Lighthouse Point Summer 2024 | Official Name Announced | Arrival Point, Cultural Center, Stage, Shopping, and Adult Area Details | Disney Releases Lighthouse Point Port Adventures | Disney Releases First Photos

History of the Agreement

Disney has pledged to develop just 20% of the land it has purchased and return about 190 acres to the Bahamian government for use as parkland, maintaining much of the rest in its pristine, undeveloped state. DCL has also committed to using sustainable building practices and ensuring strict environmental standards. At the D23 Expo in September 2022, Disney announced that the development will be 90% solar-powered. (A 550-page environmental-impact study for Lighthouse Point is available at lighthousepointbahamas.com .)

In addition to protecting the environment, Disney has pledged to make a positive impact on the Bahamian economy with Lighthouse Point. The project is providing 120+ construction jobs, approximately 80% of which will be Bahamian. DCL also has a goal of creating about 150 well-paying operations jobs once the site opens. As a step toward the second goal, DCL now has a partnership with Junior Achievement Bahamas. The program will provide services to nearly 1,000 high school students on Eleuthera and will include education on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and college preparedness. Additionally, DCL has awarded $150,000 in grants to small businesses on Eleuthera, designed to fund training in topics such as developing marketing plans and understanding financial statements. According to the project’s spokespeople, Disney’s goal is to have a ship at the Lighthouse Point port three to five days a week, with the destination having room for just one vessel at a time. Weekly visitors are expected to number approximately 11,400–26,600, depending on the season and which ships are in port.

The Guest Experience on the Island

When guests arrive at Lighthouse Point, they’ll be greeted by distinctive architecture in bright, saturated hues. The curvilinear buildings will at first appear as Bahamian shells scattered along the shoreline. Upon closer inspection, guests will discover artistic expressions of the native flora and fauna of The Bahamas and the pageantry and history of traditional Junkanoo parades. Throughout the destination, references to playful folklore characters will evoke the warmth and charm of the local culture.

disney cruise to their private island

Respect for the environment is at the heart of the design. Approximatley 90% of the destination’s electricity needs will be met by an onsite solar array, the pier was designed to avoid the need for dredging and elevated walkways will help limit impact on the landscape.

At Lighthouse Point, families will enjoy a day of fun in the sun as they relax on pristine beaches, embark on active adventures and enjoy Bahamian storytelling alongside favorite Disney characters. Much like Disney’s cruise ships and private island of Castaway Cay, Lighthouse Point will offer activities and areas for every age group. Families can relax and play along white sandy beaches and turquoise waters at the expansive family beach on the east side of the island, which will be centrally located near market-style dining, recreation and other amenities. And a brightly-colored, interactive family water play area will include two slides, water drums, fountains and more, along with a dedicated space for toddlers.

disney cruise to their private island

A Bahamian art and culture pavilion featuring special programs and local artists will provide visitors to Lighthouse Point opportunities to learn and celebrate the traditions and natural beauty of The Bahamas.

disney cruise to their private island

North of the family area will be an adult-exclusive beach — a stretch of serenity complete with a dedicated dining area for convenient access to food and drinks throughout the day, plus six private cabanas available by reservation.

There will also be 20 premium family cabanas available to rent near the family beach, including four double cabanas that accommodate larger groups and offer massage services.

Children ages 3 to 12 will have the opportunity to play at a themed kids’ club under the care of trained Disney Cruise Line counselors. It will include a splash pad inspired by favorite undersea creatures from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “The Little Mermaid,” shaded areas, and a dedicated dining zone.

Additional recreational activities will be available for kids of all ages, including a covered gaming pavilion; a volleyball court and gaga ball pit; watercraft and bicycle rentals; nature trails for hiking and biking; and more. And a collection of new Port Adventures developed in partnership with local tour operators will take guests beyond Lighthouse Point to explore the culture and landscape of Eleuthera.

The Magic and Fantasy to Visit Lighthouse Point Summer 2024

The first sailing to Lighthouse Point will be the June 6, 2024 3-Night cruise of the Disney Magic departing from Fort Lauderdale. The majority of three and four night sailings of the Magic during summer 2024 will also stop at Lighthouse Point. Four 5-night Magic sailings (on July 1, 15, 26 and August 12) will stop at BOTH Lighthouse Point and Disney’s original private island, Castaway Cay.

The official inaugural visit to Lighthouse Point (though not the first chronological visit) will be the June 8, 2024 sailing of the Disney Fantasy, with will make a stop at Castaway Cay and TWO stops at Lighthouse Point.

Lighthouse Point Gets an Official Name

At a Destination D23 session on September 9, 2023, president of Disney Signature Experiences Thomas Mazloum announced that the official name for DCL’s second private island will be Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Additionally he said, “Disney teams are collaborating with talented artists and cultural advisors in the Bahamas to shape an experience that celebrates the natural beauty, traditions and artistry of the one-of-a-kind nation.”

Arrival Point, Cultural Center, Stage, Shopping, and Adult Area Details

On November 3, 2023, DCL announced details about several areas of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, including information on the arrival area, a cultural center, a stage, the shopping area, and an adults-only zone.

Arrival Point – Mabrika Cove

“Mabrika” means “welcome” in Taino, the language of the Lucayans, the indigenous people of The Bahamas. While the language is no longer used, a few words remain – one of them being “Mabrika.” At this colorful arrival point, guests will experience the warmth of Bahamian culture.

Goombay Cultural Center

The Goombay Cultural Center will embody the essence of “Junkanoo,” a Bahamian festival filled with music and parades that will come to life across Lighthouse Point. Goombay is one of the traditional music styles of The Bahamas, involving singing, dancing and drumming. The colorful pavilion and its Junkanoo-inspired arch will invite guests to embrace the traditions of The Bahamas, along with the sights and sounds of the country’s signature festival.

Triton’s Trumpet Stage

Triton’s Trumpet Stage will be the site of family entertainment on the island. The gazebo’s name is inspired by one of the stunning natural wonders found among the Bahamian beaches – a large, spiraled seashell commonly called “Triton’s Trumpet,” as well as for the king in Disney’s The Little Mermaid films.

Treasures of Eleuthera

Treasures of Eleuthera will be the retail shop featuring locally made gifts and artisan crafts. The shop will spotlight the work of Bahamian artists.

Serenity Bay

Like Disney’s first private island, Castaway Cay, Lighthouse Point will feature an adults-only zone called Serenity Bay. This area will be reserved for the exclusive use of guests ages 18 and up and will include beach and dining areas, as well as private cabanas available by reservation.

Disney Releases Lighthouse Point Port Adventures

Disney has announced their initial list of port adventures (excursions) that will be available for booking when Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point opens later this year.

Some of the excursions are substantially the same as those available at Disney’s first private island, Castaway Cay. These are bicycle rentals, bike and kayak exploration of the island, banana boat rides, and several variations of snorkeling and scuba trips.

The wholly new experiences involve exploration of the history and natural elements of the island of Eleuthera, home to Lookout Cay. Among these are “Ebike, Sand, Snorkel, and History Toru,” “Historical Nature and Awesome Buggy Tour,” “Private Historical and Cultural Tour,” “South Eleuthera Eco and Cultural Tour,” and “South Eleuthera Eco and Historical Tour.”

Prices for these port excursions are substantially the same as those at Castaway Cay. For example, a one-hour bike rental is $15.00 at both locations.

Disney Releases First Photos

With Lighthouse Point scheduled to open within just a few months, Disney has released its first actual photos of structures on the new private island. (All photos in this section ©Disney.)

We’ve been served up a line of cabanas with boldly colorful roofs, nestled beside some remarkably clear blue water. It looks like the two on the left (red and yellow) are larger grand cabanas with smaller standard cabanas falling in beside them.

disney cruise to their private island

Next up is what appears to be a platform for seating at True-True Too BBQ, a guest lunch spot. The roof-like shades are designed to resemble sea shells and are painted underneath with images items from nature.

disney cruise to their private island

The third image Disney shared is a more prosaic look at some structures near a tram stop. My guess is that these will be merchandise shops and/or kiosks for snacks and drinks.

disney cruise to their private island

In addition to the photos above, we’ve recently seen an artists’ rendering of new costumes that Mickey and Minnie will be sporting on the island. I’m 100% here for Minnie’s big-bow moment. And we’ve learned that Disney is making good by tapping into the creative talent of island residents and educating young Bahamians on career opportunities.

Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point – Disney’s New Bahamian Cruise Destination

This article was updated on September 9, 2023 to add additional information including the newly-announced name for this development: Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point

Disney Cruise Line’s highly anticipated Bahamas destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, is set to open in the summer of 2024. This brand-new island retreat will seamlessly blend Bahamian culture with Disney magic for guests on multi-night cruises from Florida. In this guide, we discuss what we know so far – the prime location, sailing dates, pricing, and a variety of activities catering to all ages. Furthermore, we explore Disney’s commitment to celebrating Bahamian culture, supporting the local community, and promoting environmental sustainability at this tropical sanctuary. We also provide tips for booking Disney cruises to Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

What is Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point?

Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is a new island destination owned and operated by Disney Cruise Line, located at the southernmost tip of Eleuthera in The Bahamas. This tropical port-of-call will showcase Bahamian culture and nature with designs inspired by the island’s organic shapes and vibrant colors.

You’ve likely heard several different names used for this project; to better understand the lay of the land, here’s how things shape up:

  • The Bahamas is a country made up of a group of islands
  • Eleuthera is one of the islands in The Bahamas
  • Lighthouse Point is an area at the southernmost tip of Eleuthera
  • Lookout Cay is Disney’s new private port in this area

Similar to Disney’s Castaway Cay, there will be an abundance of opportunities for guests of all ages to enjoy fun in the sun . But unlike Castaway Cay — which is a separate island owned solely by Disney — Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is a private port which relies in part on the vibrant culture and natural beauty of the well-established island where it is located, Eleuthera.

Beginning in June 2024, Disney will launch two inaugural cruises to Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, followed by a selection of cruises ranging from three to ten nights during the summer. As an exclusive port of call for Disney Cruise Line passengers , Lookout Cay’s close proximity to Florida’s Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami will make it a sought-after addition to Bahamian and Caribbean itineraries.

At Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, families can bond over beach activities, water play zones, and gaming pavilions. There are dedicated areas for children , including a kids club, dining room, and splash pool, while adults can enjoy a secluded beach, private cabanas, and bars exclusively for adults .

Guests can explore the island’s Arts and Cultural Pavilion to appreciate Bahamian traditions and natural beauty, as well as embark on Eleuthera excursions developed with local tour operators.

Disney Cruise Line is dedicated to protecting The Bahamas’ environment at Lighthouse Point, investing millions in conservation projects and partnering with local organizations and scientists. They also aim to create sustainable economic opportunities for Bahamians by generating jobs and supporting artists, small businesses, and entrepreneurs.

The island extends approximately 110 miles in length and is just over a mile wide at its narrowest point, offering 210 miles of coastline.

Map showing the location of Lighthouse Point on Eleuthera, Bahamas, in relation to Nassau, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Port Canaveral

Lookout Cay can be easily reached from various Florida ports, including the Port of Miami (263 miles away), Fort Lauderdale (267 miles away), and Port Canaveral (380 miles away). This destination is strategically positioned 133 miles southeast of Castaway Cay, Disney’s Private Island , and 75 miles east of Disney’s Nassau port, making it a desirable addition to numerous Disney Cruise Line itineraries .

Eleuthera’s landscape is distinguished by its vast, rolling pink sand beaches, striking outcrops of ancient coral reefs, caves, and unique geological formations. The island hosts a diverse array of flora and fauna, featuring 13 documented native amphibian and reptile species, with some facing endangerment. The island’s untouched beaches, glistening waters, plentiful natural splendor, and various excursions make Lighthouse Point ideal for an unforgettable vacation.

Cruise choices include new and jazzed-up ships sailing an array of short and weeklong Bahamas itineraries. Cruising to the Bahamas is so easy you may even be able to go without a passport .

Family-friendly lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line, offer cruises focused on the Bahamas all year. So do newcomers Virgin Voyages, with its adults-only sailings, and Margaritaville at Sea, offering short two-night hops and longer cruise-and-stay packages. The winter and early spring seasons bring a handful of itineraries on premium lines like Celebrity Cruises and Holland America.

The only cruise lines that don’t regularly offer Bahamas cruises are the luxury lines. But don’t worry, luxe lovers: Many of the ships we included on our list of the best Bahamas cruises offer suites that come with concierge services, private enclaves or special spa privileges. Whether you’re looking for a quick and cheap getaway or a week at the beach, here are the best Bahamas cruise itineraries to start your search, in order from shortest to longest.

2-night cruises on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise from Palm Beach, Florida

Though cruising is relatively new to the Margaritaville travel and hospitality franchise, cruise line Margaritaville at Sea is essentially a rebranding of the old Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. Its refurbished ship, Paradise, originally debuted in the 1990s for Costa Cruises.

One Jimmy Buffett-themed makeover later, the ship is a perfect fit for the laid-back vibe of the Bahamas. Grab a drink or a bite to eat from the 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, try your luck at the Par-A-Dice Casino and enjoy plenty of entertainment, including the musical production, “Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy’s Ship Show.” There’s a kids club, a teen club, a spa and two pools stocked with beach balls and inflatable parrots.

The two-night cruise itinerary includes one day in Freeport, where you can shop, hit the casino, enjoy water sports or chill on the beach. The ship offers shore excursions, or you can explore independently. Margaritaville at Sea also offers cruise-and-stay itineraries of either four or six nights (including the two nights onboard the ship). These packages let you choose between two partner hotels in Freeport, where you’ll stay two or four nights on land, then hop back on the ship for your return night at sea.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise carries around 1,300 passengers in an assortment of inside and ocean-view cabins, all around 176 square feet, which is larger than the average for those categories on most mainstream ships. Ten suites with balconies are also available, with 524 square feet of space.

Who should go? Obviously, Parrotheads are gonna want to try this ship, with all its Jimmy Buffett-inspired themes and decor, but it’s also a good trial run for anyone on the fence about cruising. Pricing makes this a great cruise to enjoy an escape without spending a fortune. We found weekday sailings that begin at $99 per person based on double occupancy for an inside cabin.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas from Miami

This itinerary may be the best overall short Bahamas cruise. Both the three- and four-night cruises have stops at Nassau and Royal Caribbean ‘s massive private island — Perfect Day at CocoCay . Those two stops combined give cruisers the opportunity to enjoy water sports, spend some time at the beach and experience a bit of Bahamian culture.

Freedom of the Seas has plenty of onboard fun to occupy travelers of all ages on sea days. It’s loaded with top-deck slides and water features, specialty restaurant choices and more entertainment options than you can take in on a short cruise. Carrying around 4,000 cruise guests, Freedom of the Seas is big enough to impress without being overwhelming.

Plus, logistics for cruising out of Miami are simple enough for even first-time cruisers. From flight choices to pre- or post-cruise hotels, it’s a city that caters to tourists, especially the cruising ones.

Who should go? From first-timers to veteran cruisers, anyone looking for a short but fun-filled hop to the Bahamas should give Freedom of the Seas a look. Families looking for a quick escape will find entertainment and activities for toddlers to teens. The ship is also ideal for family reunions, bachelorette parties and birthday cruises. Couples will love the adults-only Solarium with its extra-large hot tubs looking out over the sea.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas from Port Canaveral, Florida

When Royal Caribbean’ s giant Utopia of the Seas debuts in July 2024, it will offer a bevy of short sailings, including three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida. The 236,860-ton, 5,669-passenger vessel will be the second-largest cruise ship in the world and offer more exciting amenities than any other cruise ship sailing short itineraries in North America.

Why? The newest, biggest ships in the world typically sail longer cruises. Offering short cruises on its humongous Oasis Class ships is new for Royal Caribbean; sister ship Allure of the Seas will test out the concept before Utopia launches.

Families with kids will definitely go bananas over the choices on board the new ship. The top deck alone will feature three separate pool areas, a surfing simulator, a kiddie splash zone, a basketball court, two rock walls, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

The ship will also boast an extensive selection of restaurants, bars, lounges and shops. Additionally, there will be an indoor skating rink, a spa and a showroom with Broadway-style shows.

Utopia of the Seas’ inaugural voyage is set for July 22, 2024, and will be a four-night cruise to Nassau and the line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. The second sailing will be a three-night cruise to the Bahamas that departs on July 26, 2024.

Who should go?  Short sailings on this new ship will appeal to all sorts of cruisers. Historically, new ships are reserved for longer itineraries, so this is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a snack-size sampling of a brand-new ship without spending the money on a longer sailing.

Families craving a quick getaway where the entire brood is satisfied will not be disappointed. In addition to seemingly endless kid-friendly amenities and top-notch children’s programming, Utopia of the Seas will feature a casino and adults-only spaces.

3- or 4-night cruises on Disney Wish from Port Canaveral, Florida

Disney waited a decade to build its next new ship, but Disney dreamers had their wish granted in 2022. Even better, the new Disney Wish cruises to the Bahamas. Designed to be the perfect complement to a visit to Orlando’s Disney theme parks, these short cruises visit Nassau and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. The four-night itinerary adds a sea day to enjoy the ship.

Disney Wish is designed to immerse cruisers in the various Disney worlds through technology. An onboard augmented reality game turns the Disney Cruise Line Navigator smartphone app into a virtual spyglass that lets cruisers participate in a fantasy adventure with Disney and Pixar characters. The AquaMouse waterslide combines a splashy tube ride in a two-seater raft with a pre-adventure tale told through screens at the beginning of the ride. Diners at the Worlds of Marvel restaurant take part in an interactive Avengers-themed experience through videos and special effects.

Wish carries 4,000 passengers in cabins and suites designed to simplify cruising with kids. But never fear, adult Disney fans; you’ll also find your spot on board. From the “Star Wars”-themed Hyperspace Lounge to the Quiet Cove adults-only sun deck, Disney manages to cater to grownups as well as kids.

Who should go ? This is obviously the best Bahamas cruise for lovers of all things Disney, including “Star Wars” and Marvel fans.

3- or 4-night cruises on Celebrity Reflection from Fort Lauderdale

Beginning in April 2024, Celebrity Cruises will sail three- and four-night voyages round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, year-round.

The 3,046-passenger Celebrity Reflection will offer a consistent rotation of three-night weekend cruises (departing each Friday and returning each Monday morning) and four-night weekday sailings (departing each Monday and returning each Friday morning).

Itineraries will include stops at Key West in Florida and Nassau and Bimini in the Bahamas.

Celebrity appeals mostly to the 40-plus set sans small children. It’s light on the kid-centric attractions (such as waterslides, go-karts and laser tag) that other big-ship lines include. The line offers instead lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas. (If you do have kids in tow, you can take advantage of the extensive children’s program, Camp at Sea. It provides supervised activities daily for children ages 3-12 in dedicated spaces.)

Celebrity Reflection is the line’s last and largest Solstice Class cruise ship. The Solstice C lass ships feature some of the most stylish outdoor pool decks at sea, with indoor, adults-only pool areas that, notably, are topped with glass panels embedded with solar panels that contribute to the ship’s power grid. You’ll also find large spas, casinos, showrooms and a nice selection of restaurants on board.

This ship also boasts one of the most spectacular suites in the cruising world — the 1,646-square-foot Reflection Suite. It was the first two-bedroom suite on a Celebrity Cruises vessel.

Who should go? This an ideal cruise for older travelers who are new to cruising and want to sample one or frequent cruisers who might prefer a shorter time at sea. Although Celebrity doesn’t draw many families with young children, the shorter Bahamas itineraries are also perfect for multigenerational family groups seeking an affordable cruise that appeals to all ages.

4-night cruises on Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady from Miami

Virgin Voyages aimed to be a disrupter in the cruise market from the beginning — creating a product designed to please even those who claim they would never set foot on a cruise ship. Yet the itinerary for this four-night Bahamas cruise on Scarlet Lady is fairly ordinary. Ports of call include Key West and a private beach club on the Bahamian island of Bimini.

It’s the ship itself that sets this cruise apart from the pack. You’ll find unique cabins (with balcony hammocks), brash red livery and one-of-a-kind onboard activities, such as tattoo parlors, drag shows and ‘80s-themed fitness classes, to keep its 2,700 sailors (as Virgin calls its passengers) entertained.

Who should go ? This is the best Bahamas cruise for the non-cruiser who is either young at heart or young and eager to party aboard this glitzy ship. If you’re easily offended by loud music, round-the-clock partying or sexual innuendo, this is not your Bahamas cruise.

4-day cruises on Norwegian Jade from Miami

Norwegian Cruise Line offers four-day sailings from Miami aboard Norwegian Jade. Ports of call include Key West and Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island.

Port diversions consist of touring the Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum and the Key West Aquarium, shopping along Nassau’s Bay Street and exploring the white-sand beaches and pristine waters on Great Stirrup Cay.

The 2,402-passenger vessel is part of the line’s Jewel class of ships. Though the ship launched in 2006, it received a substantial refurbishment in 2017 that included a cabin remodel, new and expanded dining and a design overhaul.

Norwegian Jewel might not have the extensive top-deck attractions of newer ships, like Norwegian Prima, or as many restaurants and bars. However, passengers will find plenty to occupy their time onboard with scheduled activities, a casino, spa and pool areas.

Who should go? Families, couples and friend groups will appreciate the unstructured nature of a Norwegian cruise. The line’s “freestyle cruising” mantra — cruising without rigid dining schedules, dress codes and formal nights — is perfectly suited for short sailings. With a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times, passengers have lots of flexibility for their limited time at sea.

5-night cruises on Carnival Sunshine from South Carolina

I am a huge lover of five-night sailings. They are long enough to scratch the cruise itch and short enough to account for travel time to and from the port without adding any extra vacation days. Plus, the slightly longer itineraries are less popular with hard partiers who can be disruptive on shorter Bahamas cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line offers 10 different five-night sailings from Charleston, South Carolina, aboard the 3,002-passenger Carnival Sunshine. It’s currently Carnival’s oldest ship (it debuted in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny). However, in 2013, the line gave it a $200 million bow-to-stern glow-up and renamed it Carnival Sunshine. The overhaul produced a new top-deck WaterWorks water park, a comedy club and several bars, lounges and restaurants.

Depending on which itinerary you choose, you can chill out on the beaches of Bimini, shop Nassau’s iconic straw market or go horseback riding by the shore of Carnival’s private island, Half Moon Cay. Consider a pre- or post-cruise stay in Charleston to take in the city’s historic landmarks, epic dining and charming cobblestone streets.

Who should go? These cruises are the best Bahamas sailings for those who prefer the intimacy of an older ship and don’t care about flashy amenities and onboard attractions on newer vessels. Plus, they’re ideal for travelers who live north of Florida and are looking for a more convenient drive-to departure port.

8-night cruises on Carnival Venezia from New York City

The 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia is a bit of an outlier in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet. Originally built for Italy-based Costa Cruises and launched in 2019, it joined the Carnival family in May 2023. (Carnival Corporation is the parent company of both Costa and Carnival.)

The ship was renovated to add many of Carnival’s signature venues. However, many of its Costa-aligned, Italian-themed designs remain, including a real gondola “sailing” down the middle of its main dining room and a pool deck built to look like a Venetian boulevard.

Guests might feel like they’ve been whisked away to Italy thanks to regional touches like the handmade Italian gelato at JavaBlue Cafe and the Italian liqueur-infused concoctions found at many bars.

Two eight-night voyages out of New York City include stops at Freeport, Nassau and Half Moon Cay.

Who should go? This Bahamas cruise is ideal for anyone looking for a different Carnival experience during a weeklong cruise. It’s almost like traveling to Italy and the Bahamas in one trip.

Bottom line

The best Bahamas cruises offer something cruisers can’t quite get enough of — whether it’s beach time or party time. While short sailings are still the most popular Bahamas itineraries, you can find options for almost every cruising style.
