When a Dodge dashboard warning light is green or blue, they are simply telling you that one of your car’s features is being used, or has been activated. No action is required at this time.

When a light is yellow, your car is trying to tell you that a less common safety feature of the car is being used (such as stability control on wet roads), a mild fault has been detected or a repair may be required. If you’re unsure, you should seek the services of a mechanic or dealership as soon as possible.

Orange or Red

If the dashboard on your Dodge is orange or red, this can be a signal that your vehicle is experiencing a problem that needs urgent attention . You MUST call or visit your dealership or mechanic immediately.

Dashboard Warning Lights Explained

Dashboard Warning Lights for Cars Explained

Car Dashboard Warning Lights Meaning

Dashboard warning light colours.

To help with this, dashboard warning lights are colour-coded. The colour of a warning light offers no specifics, but does provide the driver with a level of importance and urgency for the potential fault.

Blue Warning Lights

Blue dashboard warning lights are usually only associated with full / high beam headlights being in operation, or that something is cold, such as the engine coolant.

Green Warning Lights

Green dashboard warning lights are used to inform the driver that a vehicle utility device has been turned on and is in operation.

Amber or Yellow Warning Lights

Amber or yellow dashboard warning lights are usually a secondary warning informing that a system or engine requires servicing or maintenance. Amber lights may also be illuminated when something has been deactivated manually when by default, it is active.

Red Warning Lights

Red dashboard warning lights are primary warnings. Anything illuminating in red requires immediate investigation. To bring greater attention to the driver, a red light may also flash and/or be accompanied by an audible alarm.

Car Fault Codes

When a fault is detected, a warning light is produced along with a fault code. Some vehicles display the fault code, whilst others store it in memory but do not display it. If the warning light is generic and has many potential faults associated with it and if your vehicle doesn’t display fault codes, you’ll either need to have the codes read by an engineer using their own diagnostic equipment, or you’ll need to use your own.

If you’re willing and able to repair your own vehicle, diagnostic equipment is a must. Modern diagnostic code readers are easy to use and are now affordable. Conducting a search online will display the many models available.

Here we will go through dashboard warning lights for all makes and models of cars and vans. An explanation of what the dash symbol means and what you need to do is given.

Stability Control Warning Light Stability control, also known as Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is a safety feature that that uses various sensors and helps to stabilise a vehicle when a loss of stability has been detected. Stability control dashboard light may either come on constantly or flash. For more information, see What ESC is in Cars and How Does ESC Work in Cars .

Stability Control Warning Light Meaning Constantly on : Stability control has been manually deactivated or if stability control has not been manually deactivated, there is a fault with the system. Likely fault is a sensor and diagnostic equipment will be required. You can continue to drive, but this safety feature will likely be disabled. Flashing : Stability control has detected instability and is actively engaged.

Check Engine Warning Light The check engine light or malfunction indicator light (MIL) is a generic warning symbol that has many potential faults associated with it. The check engine dashboard warning light looks serious but is usually nothing too urgent. You should still have the fault looked into though as in some cases, there is the potential for component damage. The light will come on constantly or flash.

Check Engine Warning Light Meaning Constantly on : Often associated with an emissions fault and an incorrect fuel mixture. This will emit harmful exhaust emissions and will likely increase fuel consumption. Other faults are often due to a faulty sensor. This is not an emergency but should be diagnosed and fixed as soon as possible. Flashing : If the light is flashing, your vehicle requires immediate attention. This is often an indication of an engine misfire, where unburnt fuel is dumped into the exhaust. This causes extreme temperatures and can damage the catalytic converter.

Limp Mode Warning Light Similar to the check engine or engine management light above, limp mode is a protective safety feature that lowers the engine power output when a fault has been detected, therefore reducing the potential of damage. Diagnostic code readers are required to locate the fault.

Limp Mode Warning Light Meaning Often related to faulty valve / incorrect fuel mixture causing engine misfire. Possible faulty sensor. Have vehicle checked as soon as possible. For more information on why this light may have come on, see reduced engine power warning light .

Traction Control Warning Light Traction control is a safety vehicle system that uses sensors to determine if one or more tyres has lost traction with the road surface. In the event of a loss of traction, the brakes are automatically pumped quickly until traction is regained. Your vehicle may have an independent traction control system, or it may be part of the stability control system (see above).

Traction Control Warning Light Meaning Traction control can in most vehicle be switched off. You can also switch off stability control, which in turn will also disable traction control. In this instance, the traction control (or stability control) light will comes on. If you have not manually switched off the system and light comes on, a fault has been detected and the system is disabled. See traction control dashboard warning light for possible faults.

Coolant Warning Light This red dash warning light is telling you that the engine coolant temperature is too high. Severe risk of engine damage with continued driving.

Coolant Warning Light Meaning As soon as it’s safe to do so, stop and switch off the engine. Allow several minute for the engine to cool and check engine coolant levels. Fill to the MAX. marker on the coolant header tank if required. Ensure you use the recommended antifreeze for your vehicle – even during hot months as it increases the boiling temperature of water. If coolant levels do not require topping up, it’s highly advised that you do not continue your journey. For further information, see red engine coolant warning light on or flashing .

BRAKE dashboard warning light

Brake Warning Light Meaning

  • The manual handbrake is applied.
  • If the handbrake is not applied, check brake fluid level as it may require topping up.
  • If it is neither the handbrake or brake fluid, there may be a fault with the vehicle braking system.

Red Battery Warning Light The red battery warning light comes on as a bulb check briefly when the ignition or engine start button is switched to ‘on’. It should go out when the engine starts. If the battery warning light stays on or comes on while driving, there’s a fault with the electrical charging system.

Red Battery Warning Light Meaning If the battery warning light comes on while driving, immediately turn off any systems or utilities that are not essential and that draw electrical power. If the battery becomes exhausted, it’s likely the engine may stop. Make your way immediately to a vehicle repair shop. See why is my car battery warning light on for further information.

Yellow Battery Warning Light Along with the red battery warning light, some vehicles also come equipped with a yellow battery warning light. If the yellow battery warning light illuminates, it means the battery has a low state of charge.

Yellow Battery Warning Light Meaning Leaving the battery to charge overnight will fix the yellow battery warning light issue or a long car journey. Frequent short journeys do not allow the battery to charge properly. If the yellow warning light comes back on after fully charging, look into possible faults of a red warning light detailed above.

ABS Warning Light Anti-lock braking system or ‘ABS’ is a feature that helps the driver to keep control of the vehicle under heavy braking. It does this by preventing the wheels from locking and as such, allows the driver to continue to steer and control the vehicle.

ABS Warning Light Meaning The presence of the ABS light means this function is no longer in operation. ABS is an ‘add-on’ to standard brakes and therefore standard brakes continue to work as usual. Be cautious until you have the system fixed as heavy braking may result in the wheels locking.

Brake dash symbol

EBD Warning Light Meaning If your vehicle has an EBD fault, have it checked immediately. Vehicle may become dangerously unstable.

ABS Warning Light The air bag or ‘airbag’ dashboard warning light should go out shortly after engine ignition. If the light comes on when driving or does not come on at all during ignition, there is a fault with the air bag system. In many vehicles, this light is also associated with SRS (Supplementary Restraint System) and your vehicle may display a ‘SRS’ warning light. Seat belt pretensioner faults can occur.

ABS Warning Light Meaning It’s unlikely that the air bags will be deployed in the event of a collision. Have diagnostic equipment connected by an engineer to establish faults codes to fix the fault.

Seat Belt Warning Light The seat belt dashboard warning light illuminates on the majority of vehicles and will usually emit an audible alarm if any vehicle occupants do not fasten their belt.

Seat Belt Warning Light Meaning Seat belts help to reduce fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants by 45% and risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50%

Brake Pads Warning Light Meaning The low brake pads warning light requires you to have the brake pads changed soon. See worn / low brake pads warning light for further information.

ASR Warning Light ASR is a type of traction control and vehicle stability system used by certain car manufacturers. At each ignition cycle, ASR is activated, but can be disabled by use of the ASR OFF button, or by navigating through the options on the display panel.

ASR Warning Light Meaning It’s almost always beneficial to leave ASR switched on. If you switch off the ASR system, the ASR OFF warning light displays on your dashboard. For further information on ASR, what it is and when it is beneficial to switch it off, see ASR on a car explained .

very helpful guide to codes

I have two lights on my dash (I) ( p) but I dont see this anywhere in manual or online? Does anyone know what theses mean…just got new battery and came on a couple days later. Sorry if I am posting to someone’s post but I dont see any way to post.

Hi Brad, Can you describe the lights in anymore detail? It might be a symbol associated with a particular model of car. What’s the car?

Hi, thx for the response. It’s a 2011 Dodge Journey. The I and P have circles around them as well as brackets. My brake pads are fairly new and just had a new master cylinder and a caliper on rear put in. It’s not my parking brake unless something is stuck?

So it’s an exclamation point (!) in red? Are fluid levels ok? Did the warning light come on after the master cylinder and calliper are fitted? Could be a brake pad wear sensor issue.

Hi can you help me too? Warning light beside the time keeps coming up during my drive especially when im goong fast. It looks like a car with lines on the side

It’s not really much to go on, but does your car have a lane departure warning system? If you’re going fast and crossing lane lines without signalling, a warning light (car with lines on the side) will illuminate.

My tow haul light on what does it mean

Hi Donnie, If it’s on steady and not flashing, it should mean that tow/haul mode is on. Tow / haul mode adjust gear shift patterns for helping to tow heavy loads. You should see a button on the dash instrument panel for turning it on and off. It should look something like a trailer. If there’s no button, look into your driving modes options.

Where can I find the meaning of the gearstick symbol not in the manual, should I be worried!!!!?

Hi Karen Is there an arrow with the symbol? If so, it’s usually an economy program that’s telling you to change up a gear. You generally only need to be ‘immediately’ worried if a red warning light is on or flashing. If it’s amber, then it’s usually a non-urgent fault or a maintenance issue. Any other colour is usually an information symbol.

I have a 2004 chevy caverler in when I put my high beam on my service light come on my dash can someone help me with this problem I look everywhere to try to fix it but I don’t see anything…..

Nissan dayz highway star shighbirds modal 2019 complex deshboard simble Pl explain

i have a light on the dash flashing (auto) any ideas?

Hi Roger, So that someone might be able to help, what’s the make and model of your car? Not sure, but it’s perhaps something to do with auto stop / start. If it is, it’s usually battery related.

UK Ford Ka MK2 (Fiat 500 derivitive) 1.2L petrol. Since I’ve had it, the amber lamp like a hanging lightbulb (described as Lighting Control elsewhere) has persistently lit a few seconds after starting. I took it to mean a bulb failure. Checked ALL external lamps, all working. Have lived with the illuminated symbol on the dashboard for eighteen months. An imminent Driving Test that will need to be taken in this car, and that the Examiner can cancel the test if any warning lamp is lit, leads me to more thorough checking. I’ve replaced EVERY external lamp with new. Headlamps (H4-55W60W), tail/brake lamps (21W5W), reverse/fog (21W), front/rear indicators (21WA), and sidelights/side repeaters (wedge 5W/5WA). At that point when testing, spotted the high-level brakelight had 1/5 bulbs out (different than prior testing); thought ‘Oh that must be it’; also replaced (with bulb formerly in sidelight) and now all five work; guess what, lighting control warning still lit. Am I misunderstanding the reason it’s lit or does it indicate a fault other than non-functioning external lamp?

Hello Norman, Yes, the hanging bulb with an exclamation mark inside it is an external lightbulb failure. Have you checked all lights including fogs and number plate lights? When you replace the bulbs, you need to clean the contacts and ensure they are in proper contact with the bulbs. Thigs have a habit of getting a bit loose over time. Also when you replace bulbs, replace them in set of new bulbs as the difference in resistance during the bulb test (even if they’re working) can cause the fault light.

I did notice you say that the light stays on for a few seconds after starting. Does that mean that after a few seconds the warning light goes off?

The i in a red square which I am told is the message indicator symbol began to come on today but not all the time and tonight only when I opened the driver’s door?? Any ideas please?

Hello Juliet, Do you have the option to scroll through the menu and check any messages? Usually the information message warning light comes on along with either a message to read or a warning light that it’s telling you to read the owner’s manual for further information.

Hi , we own an Isuzu elf camper – terra 500. A red light sign showed along our drive. It is a lamp with S/T in it . What is it ? Thanks in advance. Send me an email & will forward you with pic

Hi Abigail, I’ve checked manuals and it seems to be one of those obscure warning lights that aren’t referenced anywhere. Hopefully someone else may have an idea.

I have a 2005 Monte carlo. You start the car drive 2 ,3 blocks and the temperature gage goes to hot and the hot coolant light comes on and it beeps. The car is not actually overheating or even hot. Sometimes it goes off Sometimes it will stay on. If you keep driving it goes into slump mode. You can push tge gas all the way to floor and you won’t go any faster

Hi Angela, Provided that you’ve checked your coolant levels, they’re all topped up and you’re sure that the coolant isn’t overheating, then it’s likely the coolant temperature sensor.

I have a 2007 Nissan Versa, before the cvt was added. There is a red warning light on dash, it flashes quickly, then stops. It happens when the car is off, with no key in the ignition. It is a car, looks like maybe the hood part is up? Can’t really tell, bc it flashes so quick, and is behind my steering wheel. I have looked in the car manual, with no luck. Could this be an issue with the anti theft feature, since the doors are not locked at the time? My husb doesn’t lock the doors also. It also has a remote car starter that was not included with the original package.

Twice, I had a BIG red warning sign flash. Does not stay on. Once while I was driving. I had cruise control on in traffic. The car kinda felt as if it wanted to break. It was quick and it the car did not stop. The other was going through a gate where I had to drive slow while breaking. Could this be a breaking issue? I could not find anything about it in my manual. I have a 2021 Nissan Kicks.

Hi Joy, Sounds as though it might have been the Automatic Emergency Braking System. If there’s a risk of forward collision, the system warns you with an audible alert and a yellow or red warning light (depending on the severity). The system can also apply braking. Sometimes the system gives a false alarm, which is what surprises you. Perhaps check with Nissan to see fi there’s any software updates and if it keeps doing it, have it looked at – particularly if your car is still under warranty. The system relies on the camera located at the top center of the windshield and a radar located on the front of the vehicle. Always ensure these areas are clear and clean for optimal operation of safety systems.

Brief Background to the Dodge Journey

Dodge Journey vehicles are medium-sized crossover SUVs (CUVs) that are issued by the Dodge brand. They were first released in 2009. Then there was a rebadge to the Fiat Freemont in 2011 as a parallel collection. The cars come in right-hand and left-hand drive.

The Dodge Journey comes with warning indicators just like other Dodge models. When these warning lights come up; it could be a system malfunction, security issue, or need for urgent maintenance.

Driver safety shouldn't be taken for granted, especially when a warning light comes on. Taking a related risk could be bad for you and/or the vehicle

What Is the Electronic Throttle Control on a Dodge Journey?

Your Dodge's electronic throttle control features an accelerator pedal module which has a motor, sensors, and a throttle plate. It's a great improvement from the traditional mechanical linkage in old-model cars. Although it isn't immune to mechanical faults.

The ETC measures the pressure drivers apply on the gas/accelerator pedal. The pedal isn't mechanically linked to the engine. A sensor tracks the pedal's position and the data is transmitted to the ETC for engine RPMs (revolutions per minute) to be adjusted.

Gas pedal pressure will determine how much the throttle passage will be opened. There's a flat valve at the opening that's regulated by the pedal's movement. It's called the throttle plate or butterfly valve.

The throttle plate rotates inside the throttle body when you depress the pedal. Then the air will be let into the intake manifold and quickly drawn into it by its vacuum.

1) Sensors in the ETC System

Two sensors that are instrumental to the ETC's operations include the following:

  • Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor

The mass airflow (MAF) sensor calculates the change in airflow. It will then send results to the engine's control unit (ECU) or electronic control module (ECM). This sensor is usually located between the throttle body and the air cleaner.

  • Throttle position (TPS) Sensor or Throttle Valve Position Sensor

It's linked to the throttle body and it tracks your Dodge's throttle angle. You can find it on the reverse side of the throttle plate.

Don't get confused about the two sensors mentioned above. The TPS simply informs the ECU/ECM that you've depressed the gas pedal, while the MAF detects the air added. The NAF

2) The Role of the ECU

It's the ECU that controls the balancing of the air-fuel mixture in real-time. It also calculates the best moment to activate the spark plugs to ignite the balanced air-fuel combination.

3) Wide-Open Throttle (WOT)

This is what's referred to as full throttle. It's when the throttle is fully opened on an internal combustion engine or in your car. WOT also means the max-speed state of running an engine or the usual condition of a completely opened butterfly valve or throttle plate.

Your depression of the gas pedal in this situation is referred to as "flooring it". There'll be maximum intake of air because of the lowest resistance to incoming air.

What Does the Electronic Throttle Control Warning Light Mean?

The electronic throttle control warning light on your Dodge Journey could mean that the system has detected a communication problem that has resulted in an ETC error. It's most likely a result of a miscommunication between the ETC and its related sensors.

Dodge Journey vehicles were introduced almost a decade and a half ago, so the dashboard instrument cluster arrangement may vary based on the model year of your car. Still, the lightning symbol is very easy to notice when it illuminates.

Electronic Throttle Control Warning Light Behavior

The electronic throttle control warning light can be a troublesome alert that can come on at any time after the first illumination. And it can go off easily and come on after some days or even weeks. It may stay on for hours in some cases, only to stop when you restart the vehicle.

It will seem like the alert has a mind of its own. Worse still, the symptoms of the fault may not be easy to notice. The car might just be driving just fine regardless of the warning light. There's no need to get confused or nervous.

The ETC light could stay on after the initial indicator check when you first start your car. It could also activate when driving. Even the check engine light (CEL) could activate with it simultaneously.

What To Do Immediately After Noticing the ETC Warning Light

You could continue driving, but it wouldn't be the best move. Just remember to get the car checked at your earliest convenience if you decide to take the RISK.

Drivers could also stop the Dodge instead and park it at a convenient spot or put it in "park". Then proceed to put the engine off and cycle the ignition. The warning light may go off at this point.

Your car should be drivable if the alert doesn't go off. But the vehicle will need to be serviced ASAP. In case of the light flashing, then you should understand that the problem is a severe one that demands more urgency. It won't be advisable to drive the car in such a scenario, but you actually could.

Utilize a diagnostic scan tool to check for vehicle fault codes if you have one. This should be done before any other thing-be it DIY physical checks or hiring a professional technician. It may save you from getting scammed by the dealer or mechanic with a wrong diagnosis and unnecessary repair bills.

Ask the professional or dealer attending to you if they can let you be with them in the vehicle as the diagnoses are taking place. Some repairers offer such a service.

You'll have to take your car to the dealer or auto repair workshop immediately if you don't have a scan tool. Decreased engine power, rough engine noise, or abnormally high idle speed may be experienced if you drive the Dodge while the light is flashing.

Performance issues such as misfiring, stalling, and unstable throttle feedback when the light comes on while driving means you must stop the car. Towing the vehicle to a repairer is recommended at this point if you want to avoid complicating the situation.

Other Symptoms of a Bad ETC

You should look out for the following signs when the ETC alert comes on:

  • Idle surges
  • Rough idling
  • Uninitiated acceleration (car accelerating by itself)
  • Reduced fuel mileage (poor fuel economy)
  • Engine misfiring

Electronic Throttle Control System Reset Procedure

The problem being indicated by the ETC light might just be the need for a gas pedal reset. The pedal position might not be well lined up or aligned. This will result in a communication error with the sensors that trigger the motor which closes or opens the throttle. Such could be the case in a high-mileage Dodge Journey.

Thankfully, the pedal reset can be done on your own instead of hiring a professional. Follow the steps below carefully to reset the pedal.

  • Step 1: Switch on the ignition key without starting the vehicle.
  • Step 2: Press the accelerator pedal to the floor and ease it up.
  • Step 3: Start the vehicle and depress the pedal again. Observe whether your Dodge will respond or not. Check to see if the ETC light has gone off as well.
  • Step 4: Proceed to drive the car around to see if the ETC is working well and if there are no other issues.
  • Step 5: Take the car to a repair place if the throttle problem continues and the ETC light is still on.

Most of the warning lights that illuminate on your dashboard can't be taken for granted. And the Dodge Journey electronic throttle control warning light isn't an exception. That's why they're referred to as warnings. Always deal with the lightning symbol alert coming on as soon as possible.

Scanning your Dodge for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCS) will help in eliminating so many possibilities related to the ETC alert. It will save you from diagnostics bills at a repair shop or wasting money on "trial and error". You may only need to do a simple fix such as swapping out the air filter and ETC sensor, or resetting the pedal.

What Does A Lightning Bolt Symbol Mean On My Dashboard?

Magnus Sellén

  • Updated: February 12, 2023

lightning bolt symbol on car

Dashboard lights always bring some level of concern with them. The lightning bolt symbol is one that creates confusion and alarm, but what does it mean? If you aren’t familiar with these warnings, you may be at a loss for what to do next.

In this guide, we discuss the meaning behind the lightning bolt message on the dash. We look at what causes this warning and show you how to fix it at. At the end of our article, you will gain some answers to questions you’ve been asking, giving you the peace of mind you deserve.

What Does The Lightning Bolt Symbol Mean?

The lightning bolt is known as the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) Indicator. This symbol shows a lightning bolt that’s located between parenthesis or reversed brackets. When it comes on, it indicates a problem with the electronic throttle control system.

The electronic throttle control system contains the accelerator pedal, the throttle body and an ETC module. The module reads input from the accelerator pedal and transmits data to the throttle body. For example, if you step on the accelerator, the ETC opens the throttle body in relation to the force applied to the pedal. When the pedal is released, the ETC closes the throttle body.

Yellow vs. Red Lightning Bolt Symbol

Some vehicles have a yellow lightning bolt symbol, while others show a red warning light. What is the difference? Is one more severe than another?

One might think that a yellow or amber-colored lightning bolt symbol indicates a less severe problem versus the red warning, but that’s not the case. The reality is that these two symbols mean the same thing. The only difference is that some manufacturers choose to use yellow, while others installed a red light.

Causes of a Lightning Symbol On Car

When the lightning bolt illuminates on the dashboard, you know there’s a problem with something in the electronic throttle control system. It could be the throttle body, an accelerator pedal position sensor, the throttle position sensor or an issue with the wiring.

1. Faulty or Dirty Throttle Body

dirty throttle body

When the throttle body gets dirty, it can become stuck. Additionally, if it is damaged, the system reports an ETC fault and the lightning bolt warning comes on.

One of the main reasons for throttle body failure is contamination. As dirt and debris accumulate in the throttle body, the valve no longer functions as it should, leading to a problem with the air supply control.

2. Bad Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor

accelerator pedal position sensor location

There’s also an accelerator pedal position sensor working alongside the accelerator pedal module. This pedal position sensor relays the position of the pedal to the control module.

The pedal module uses this information to alert the throttle position sensor so the position of the throttle remains correct. If the sensor doesn’t send the right information, the ETC system can’t work as intended.

3. Bad Throttle Position Sensor

Throttle Position Sensor

Along with the pedal sensor, there’s also a sensor for the throttle position. The purpose of this sensor is to relay the throttle body’s current position to the computer.

With this information, the computer adjusts the timing and fuel ratios for maximum performance. If the ECU can’t figure out how to time everything, the lightning bolt symbol comes on the dashboard.

RELATED: 5 Symptoms Of A Bad Throttle Position Sensor (& Replacement Cost)

4. Faulty Wirings

The electronic throttle control system contains numerous parts attached together by connectors and wires. If any one of these connections fails, the lightning bolt symbol could show up on the dashboard.

Over time, wires can fray and become worn. The trouble with this problem is determining where the faulty wire is, as there are many to inspect.

How To Fix A Lightning Symbol On Car Dashboard

Working with the throttle control system isn’t always easy. If you aren’t mechanically inclined, you may have trouble with some of these steps. Otherwise, there’s no expensive or elaborate equipment needed to perform most of the procedures.

1. Read Trouble Codes

diagnose car

With your professional code scanner , it’s easy to tell what faults are set in the computer. Plug the scanner into the OBD-II port to get the computer codes.

These codes often reveal a letter and number combination, some of which are generic, while others are manufacturer specific. If you aren’t sure what the faults mean, you can look them up in our trouble code library .

If the code scanner reveals too many faults, it’s best to reset the system and try again. You may need to drive the car for a short time until the light comes back on. Now, the codes that are present are just the newest ones, making it easier to diagnose what’s going on.

2. Clean Throttle Body

clean throttle body

Perform a visual inspection of the throttle body to see if contamination is causing the problem. If the throttle body is unobstructed, it will open and close with minimal effort. As soon as it is released, it should close automatically.

If this isn’t what you notice, a simple cleaning might be required. Purchase a throttle body cleaner and follow these steps.

  • Disconnect the air duct from the throttle body. When you remove vacuum lines or electrical connectors, mark them accordingly for reconnection.
  • Rotate the throttle plates. Spray your cleaner on the inside of the throttle body.
  • Spray compressed air onto the throttle body to dry all of the solvent. Don’t reinstall the connections until the throttle body is completely dry.
  • Reinstall the vacuum lines and connectors.

Once these steps are complete, take the vehicle for a test drive to see if the problem is resolved. If not, you may need to move on to the next steps.

3. Calibrate Throttle Body

Depending on what type of car you drive, there are varying procedures for resetting the throttle body. These procedures must often be performed after you replace the throttle body or clean it. Reference the service manual to see what’s needed for your vehicle, or follow these steps.

  • Start the engine.
  • Allow the vehicle to idle for three minutes.
  • Shut the engine off and wait a minute.
  • Restart the engine and allow it to run for three minutes.

This may be enough to reset it with most cars. However, some models require you to drive for a short time. If this step is needed, drive at highway speeds for a few minutes. During that time, you want to accelerate and decelerate repeatedly.

Additionally, you may be able to reset the throttle body with an advanced scan tool. You may be able to perform a relearn procedure on the throttle body, so it resets.

4. Inspect Wiring

If none of the previous fixes repaired the situation, you need to inspect the wiring and connectors. This process can take some time as you track every connection from the start to finish.

If you notice any frayed or damaged wiring, you want to replace it. Additionally, bad connections should be repaired, so the system can properly communicate through the sensors.

5. Contact A Professional

If you’ve worked through all of the other steps and can’t seem to figure out what’s going on, it’s best to visit a repair shop at this time. With more sophisticated diagnostic equipment and skilled technicians on-site, you may get a better answer than what you’ve found.

You may have been able to figure out what’s wrong but don’t feel experienced enough to fix it. This is another appropriate time to visit a repair shop in your area.

Can you drive with the lightning bolt symbol on?

You could still drive, but we don’t advise it. While the car may still run, the idle and acceleration can be affected. This not only poses a safety issue on the road but can also lead to engine damage if it’s not repaired promptly.

How much does it cost to fix a lightning bolt symbol?

It depends on what’s causing the problem. If you only need to clean the throttle body, your supplies shouldn’t cost more than $25. However, if a sensor or wiring needs to be replaced, the cost could easily add up to several hundred dollars.

Can you drive with throttle body problems?

The car will usually still run, but not well. You will notice performance issues that can lead to a rough idle or unexpected acceleration. For this reason, it’s not advisable to drive when there’s a problem with the throttle body or one of the sensors.

How do you calibrate the throttle body?

Depending on the vehicle model, you may be able to recalibrate it with an advanced scan tool. Otherwise, starting the engine and letting it idle often does the trick. You may also need to run the car at highway speeds for a short time. Check the service manual for more information.

As with any warning light, it’s important to pay attention when the lightning bolt symbol appears on the dashboard of your car. It’s trying to tell you that there’s a problem with the electronic throttle control system. If left unchecked, you could face serious on-road performance issues that put you in jeopardy. It can also lead to engine damage, causing even higher repair bills.

If you want your vehicle to continue working for you, it’s important to take prompt action whenever there’s a problem. At the first sign of the lightning bolt symbol, inspect the throttle body system and repair what is broken. Your vehicle will thank you for it.

Why Does the Dashboard Show a Lightning Bolt Symbol?

The dashboard shows a lightning bolt symbol because of vacuum leaks around the intake manifold or electrical problems in the electronic throttle control system. The symbol also appears when the car activates limp mode, or the throttle or accelerator position sensors are damaged.

Vacuum Leaks Due to Gasket Damage

A red lightning bolt meaning is sometimes associated with a vacuum leak in the car. Vacuum leaks occur when if the gasket is worn out or damaged in the system.

These gaskets seal the engine head and intake manifold to prevent any gaps or gas leakages. However, the gaps become prominent as the gasket ages or gets damaged.

A lightning bolt on dashboard Dodge Journey or other cars is expected if there’s a vacuum leak due to one of the following reasons:

  • Cracked or worn vacuum hoses cause the air to leak into the intake manifold. These hoses are made up of rubber and are prone to damage due to high pressure or impact.
  • A damaged actuator causes vacuum leaks. Vacuum actuators control different engine parts, such as electronic throttle body and power brake booster and when it malfunctions, the lightning bolt symbol pops up on your dashboard.
  • Loose or improperly connected vacuum hoses lead to air leaking into the intake manifold and a vacuum leak ultimately resulting in lightning bolt symbol car.
  • A defective intake manifold gasket creates leaks. The gasket seals the engine block and manifold.
  • A cracked or damaged intake manifold causes the air to leak.

Once you start noticing the symptoms of a vacuum leak, you should verify the problem. Look for signs such as rough idle, stalling, high fuel consumption, poor fuel economy, engine misfires, and hesitation to start the car.

You can confirm the leakage by visual inspection . It usually works when there’s a small leak. To identify, you can look for cracks or holes around the hoses, gaskets, and the manifold.

You can also look for loose connections that can be a potential cause of leakage. There’s usually a hissing sound coming from the leak point.

If visual inspection does not work, go for a pressure test . You’ll need a vacuum pump to create negative pressure inside the manifold. The air will escape in case of a leak, and you will detect it once the pressure drops.

Moreover, you can use a smoke machine to conduct a smoke test. It involves blowing smoke into the manifold. If it comes out of the hoses, you will detect the leaks.

Mechanics also conduct the propane test by spraying propane around the hoses and connections. In case of a leak, the engine will draw the propane and rev up.

Electrical Problems Triggering the Symbol

If you want to know the electronic throttle control red lightning bolt on dash meaning, you should consider various electrical problems. These include connection and wiring problems, a faulty electrical motor, or a defective ETC module.

It’s not necessary to have all the problems at the same time, so you will need to check each of them one after the other. The electronic throttle control (ETC) system contains many parts that are connected to each other with connectors and wires.

If one of these connections breaks, the bolt sign appears on the dashboard. Visual inspection lets you detect frayed, corroded, or faulty throttle wiring . You can also wiggle the wires to see if they are loose.

Otherwise, use a multimeter to analyze the resistance of the wires. You will know there’s a fault if a wire has higher resistance than expected. You can hire a mechanic if you’re uncomfortable running this electric test.

Handling the wires carefully is essential because they are delicate and get easily damaged. Apart from the wires, you should check the connectors and the motor. These components get damaged if exposed to moisture or if the car experiences impact due to an accident.

Moreover, the ETC module gets damaged if there is a software glitch or manufacturing defect in the computer of your vehicle. The module becomes faulty if dropped or hit in an accident or exposed to extreme temperatures or environmental conditions.

It can also fail due to a short circuit or high current flowing through the circuit. You can prevent the failure of the ETC module by keeping it clean and avoiding too many accessories because it overloads the circuit.

Limp Mode Activation in Some Cars

Limp mode activates in some cars when the control unit detects a problem with the transmission or engine. It is a safety feature that limits the engine’s performance and power to save it from severe damage.

The feature may activate due to engine misfire, damaged sensors, or low oil levels. Limp mode activation is mainly followed by a red lightning bolt and check engine light on the car’s dashboard.

The feature makes the car run slowly and creates difficulty in shifting gears. You will also notice the following symptoms:

  • Erratic shifting
  • Ineffective  braking
  • Sluggish acceleration
  • Loss of power steering
  • Reduced engine power

It’s important to note that the limp mode is not a fixing mechanism and does not repair the car. It’s just a preventive feature that saves your vehicle from further damage. Therefore, you should always consult a mechanic to diagnose the underlying problem.

Damaged Gas or Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APP sensor)

The APP sensor measures the position of the accelerator pedal in an automobile. It is a vital part of the car’s engine, as it tells the engine how much power to deliver.

The APP sensor sends signals to the control unit based on the pedal’s position. The control unit then uses the signal to decide the fuel quantity to inject and how much air to let into the engine.

A faulty sensor will send the wrong information, and the ETC system will fail to operate as intended. The sensor may fail due to one of the following reasons :

  • The sensor can get damaged due to road impact since it’s located on the accelerator. It may get damaged due to potholes or car collisions.
  • Electrical overload, such as short circuits, can damage the sensor since it’s an electrical part.
  • Debris, dirt, or sand may lodge in the sensor housing and damage the sensor.
  • Exposure to moisture or road salt damages the APP sensor
  • The sensor might be defective from its production

Damaged Car Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

Your car’s TPS analyses the throttle valve positions . The sensor helps the engine management system decide the amount of fuel or air to release for combustion.

However, if the sensor gets damaged, the electronic throttle control light on car won’t start. The TPS fails to send signals to the control unit or sends false signals. The warning light appears when the control unit has difficulty figuring out the timing of specific processes.

A damaged or faulty TPS causes problems that affect the engine’s performance. These include acceleration issues, activation of limp mode, or the engine may not start or stall.

A damaged TPS can cause the throttle valve to stay shut or open. If stuck closed, the engine won’t get air and fail to start. Contrarily, a stuck open bad throttle body valve allows too much air into the engine and results in high idle.

How To Fix a Car That Shows Lightning Bolt Sign on the Dash?

To fix a car that shows lightning bolt sign on the dash, you should connect a scanning device to diagnose the problem. After detection, you can reset the car, clean the throttle, or replace the wiring or sensors to make the lightning symbol disappear.

Read Trouble Codes To Identify the Problem

Before you start fixing the problem, it is vital to identify the exact issue. You can use a code scanner to read the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) shown by your car’s control unit.

All you have to do is connect the scanner to the OBD port in your car. You can find the port under the dashboard. The scanner will display the diagnostic code after a few seconds.

The diagnostic code is a series of letters and numbers with specific meanings. These codes are associated with a particular problem, which you can find in the scanner manual.

You can f ollow the steps below to find the problem :

  • Find the OBD port under the dashboard and connect the scanner. Ensure the scanner is compatible with your car model, and be gentle with the port.
  • Turn on the scanner and let it scan the computer.
  • Once the scanner displays the DTC, record it.
  • Find the same DTC in a code manual and diagnose your car’s problem.

You can hire a mechanic to avoid performing this diagnosis yourself. Also, sometimes the scanner shows too many faults. In that case, it would be best to reset the system, drive the car briefly, and try again.

Reset the Symbol on Dashboard

Wondering how to reset red lightning bolt on Dash Dodge Avenger or any other car? Sometimes, resetting can make the lighting bolt disappear from the dashboard. Manually resetting the ETC can be easy when you know the right procedure.

So here’s what you can do:

  • Turn off your car and wait for a few minutes.
  • Turn the key to ON, but do not start the vehicle.
  • Press and hold the gas pedal all the way down for 10 seconds.
  • Release the gas pedal.
  • Start the car.

However, it would be best to be careful while pressing the pedal because pressing too hard or for a long time can damage the engine. Also, before resetting, ensure your car is in park or neutral.

Repair Bad Connections or Replace Wires

If none of the previous fixes work, you must inspect the wiring and connectors near the throttle to get rid of this warning light. It will take you some time to detect the damaged or frayed wiring. But once you find them, here’s how you can replace them :

  • Find the throttle body in the intake manifold.
  • Remove the battery connection to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Use a wrench or socket to remove the throttle system from the engine.
  • Closely inspect the wiring and look for any cracks, corrosion, or breaks.
  • Remove the insulation from the end of the new wire and connect it to the throttle body. Always connect the wires to the accurate terminals.
  • Install the throttle body back in the engine and reconnect the battery.
  • Start the engine to check for any problems.

Clean Throttle Body or Replace Its Sensors

Since a dirty throttle body triggers the dashboard bolt light, cleaning it makes it disappear. You can buy a throttle cleaner and follow the steps below:

  • Park the car on an even surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.
  • Detach the air duct from the throttle system.
  • Remove the vacuum lines or electrical connectors and mark them to remember during reconnection.
  • Move the throttle plates and spray the cleaner on the internal parts of the throttle body.
  • Dry the area by spraying compressed air.
  • Reinstall the connections only when the throttle body is completely dry.
  • Connect the vacuum lines, connectors, and battery.
  • Take the automobile for a test drive to see if the warning lights disappear.

If you detect defective throttle control sensors, hiring a mechanic to replace them is better. The procedure is a bit complicated, so you might worsen the situation if you don’t have prior experience.

After reading all lightning bolt symbol car causes and fixes, you can move to the next stage and get your tools or hire a professional. Remembering the following key points will make the process easier:

  • A lightning bolt warning light appears because of a vacuum leak, electrical faults, or damaged sensors .
  • It can also illuminate due to the limp mode activation or contaminated throttle.
  • You can resolve the warning by replacing the faulty sensors and connections or cleaning the throttle .

These steps will go a long way and protect your engine’s performance.
