Alison Moyet (born June 18, 1961) is British new wave and synth-pop inflected singer-songwriter and musician hailing from Billericay, Essex, England.

Having trained to be a piano tuner after leaving school age 16, Moyet played in a number of punk, rock and blues bands across Essex including the Vandals, the Screamin’ Ab Dabs, and the Little Roosters. It wasn’t however until the singer turned 21 that she earned her mainstream breakthrough as a part of the synthpop duo Yazoo. Formed alongside former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke in 1982, Yazoo released the albums “Upstairs at Eric’s” and “You and Me Both”, which spawned the hit singles “Only You”, “Do’t Go”, and “Situation”. After Yazoo disbanded, Moyet signed with CBS in 1983, marking the start of the singer-songwriter’s solo career.

Released in 1984, Moyet’s debut album “Alf”, was produced by the respected producing and songwriting duo Jolley & Swain. The album became a major hit in Britain, topping the UK Albums Chart and spawning the hit singles “Invisible”, “All Cried Out”, and “Love Resurrection”. Propelling Moyet to British stardom, the singer subsequently performed at Live Aid in 1985, toured alongside John Altman’s jazz band, and released the hit single “Is This Love?” in 1986.

Moyet’s second album “Raindancing” arrived in 1987, peaking at No. Two on the UK Albums Chart and No. 94 in the U.S. Featuring the singles “Weak in the Presence of Beauty”, “Ordinary Girl”, and “Sleep Like Breathing”, “Raindancing” was succeeded by “Hoodoo” in 1991. Reluctant to submit to overly pop sensibilities, despite the potential commercial success of doing so, “Hoodoo” represented Moyet's fight for artistic control. With contributions from Kirsty MacColl, Steve Lillywhite and Marius De Vries, the album’s lead single “It Won’t Be Long” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Song.

After the release of her subsequent album “Essex” in 1994, and the greatest hits compilation “Singles” in 1995, Moyet, due to contractual disagreements with Sony, didn’t release any new material for eight years. During this time Moyet collaborated with the likes of Tricky, Ocean Colour Scene and The Lightning Seeds, and released a pair of compilation albums in 2001 and 2002. Following her Sony contract release in August 2002, Moyet signed with Sanctuary Records and released her fifth studio album “Hometime”. Produced by The Insects, the album drew Brit Award and Mercury Prize nominations, and peaked at No. 18 on the UK Album Chart.

The cover album “Voices” followed in 2004, and, led by the single “One More Time”, the album “The Turn” was released in October 2007. After a move to the label Cooking Vinyl in 2013, Moyet released her eighth studio album “The Minutes”, accompanied by the singles “When I Was Your Girl” and “Love Reigns Supreme”.

Live reviews

Sometimes, a dramatic change of landscape is what’s required for a musician to genuinely come out of their shell, to reveal a side of themselves to the world that previously hadn’t been on display; that’s precisely what happened to Alison Moyet after the dissolution of her short-lived synthpop act Yazoo in the early eighties. As a part of that band, Moyet had mainly become known for catchy pop tracks with a classic eighties electronic sound to the instrumentation, but the songs had never really shown off her voice in earnest, and it wasn’t until she began to release music under her own name that her stunning vocal range really came to the fore, as she began to concern herself with sounds that were far more bluesy in nature, as well as some traditional pop balladry. She’s no arguably better known for those songs than her Yazoo work, and continues to retain a big enough cult fanbase to tour Europe regularly; she joined Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra on the road around the UK back in 2010, returning to her more soulful solo output just a couple of years after completing a successful reunion tour with Yazoo around Europe.

Great concert in 't Paard in The Hague, The Netherlands. Alison kicked of with one of the strongest songs from her latest album Other, I Germinate, followed by a Yazoo classic, Nobody's Diary. More Yazoo classics followed during the concert (Only You, Situation and closing song Don't Go). Highlights during the concert were Wishing You Were Here, This House and The Rarest Birds. All by all a great concert by one of the best voices around. Alison Moyet will surely stay for many years to come!

Alison was great! Really amazing this woman and her incredible voice. I liked the new song texts, but not the kind of noisy music accompanying them. Brutally loud and far away from melodious songs such as Invisible. Only you abd Love resurrection were hghly appreciated by the crowd. Alison Moyet is a great star but the „back to electronics“ style of music she us süorting on her new album is not my type of music.

The lady can sing. Great , fun, upbeat show. Everything you'd want to hear and a few newbies for me that I really liked. The crowd was bopping and singing all evening . Not a dull moment. My highlight - Love Resurrection . But who doesn't love Only Ypu. Go Ali! Will be looking out for next show.

Great performance from a great artist at a great venue.

Not every contemporary artist can pull off the Bridgewater Hall but Alison Moyet did so brilliantly.

Very human, engaging with an incredible voice.

The room, the acoustics, the music but first of all the Chanteuse! Alison Moyet was magic! Her voice, if that's possible, was better than ever. I'm obsessed. Thanks for lighting up Portland's Star Theater!

Saw Alison Moyer at the Sage Gateshead. She was AMAZING, just like she was in the 80's. Was not disappointed. Still got that distinctive voice. Went there with a friend for my 50th Birthday

Absolutely a great night she still has the voice and it reminded me of the eighties when she was with Yazoo. I would definitely recommend that she is worth going to see.

Wonderful performance by a great performer!!

Ms. Moyet was in wonderful voice for this concert and the sold-out crowd was treated to stellar performance by a relaxed, powerful singer. The crowd responded enthusiastically and gave all the love back to Ms. Moyet that she showered on us. Every time we have seen her, she has been wonderful, but she seem more relaxed and comfortable than ever before. This translated to a great show! (Even better the poster given out by the Fillmore was a classic and something to treasure.) If you have an opportunity to catch this show, don't miss it: one of the best we've seen this year!

Blown Away!

This was my 3rd or 4th time seeing her, once as Yaz. Figured that she would stick pretty close to her new stuff since she was promoting a new album and while she did, she also performed a few of her older tunes to everyone's delight. I was expecting to be lukewarm about the new music but it was awesome!! Really blown away by not only the new tunes but by her voice and talent which I had expected would have declined in the 30+ years since I listened to her regularly. It turned out to be a magical evening and I would see her again and again!

One of the best shows I've ever seen. Don't think I've ever seen a performer so happy during a concert.

Very entertaining. Talked with the crowd. Very personal. Still sounds great. Very intimate setting. Cool group of fans too. Most respective fans I've encountered in Mn. Usually fans talk through concert or on their phones

Alison Moyet - incredible

Perfectly enjoyed the concert. She sounded amazing, still has great moves. Brought back many memories. The only thing that was not great was the lack of seating. There was about a dozen seats that were reserved seating and 10 stools up for grabs. Don't miss a chance to see the show if you can!

She Gave All

Maybe the best pop vocal performance I've experienced in 35 years of concert going. Don't miss it.

Alison Moyet Fine Line Minneapolis

I have been a fan since her early years, and have followed her career in music ever since. I was so thrilled to have had the chance to see her perform finally, having never been to Minneapolis before. The show was just fantastic! New songs and old and some from in between. I loved it. A couple songs guitar sort of drowned out her voice, but that didn’t matter. I still smiled from ear to ear, from beginning till end!

Alison Moyet was fabulous!

She was amazing. What a powerhouse. Had a fabulous time!

Alison awesome, Sound not so good

Performers were great, the sound in the venue was not good for this type of music. Perhaps an acoustic performer, without base and such, would be easier to hear in this venue. Sitting on the side in the balcony made it difficult to see the performers, so if you care about seeing them definitely show up early to get your general admissions seat in the center balcony or lower level. To take a photo, I just pre-zoomed my phone screen and held it way above my head in hopes that it would capture a good shot of Alison Moyet.

One of my all time favorite concerts and venue

We've never been to Sixth & I, and we didn't know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised. It is odd to have a separate line for the box office an bar in the basement and a separate line on the other side of the building for general admission. The Sixth & I is an actual historic synagogue and it is absolutely perfect for a smaller concert. And would be great for an intimate concert taped for MTV Unplugged. The synagogue is beautiful. A bottom and top floor lined with pews. And now for Alyson Moyet....one of my all time favorite artists. Starting with Yaz (or Yazoo in Europe) and then on her own, I have every album and thrilled to finally see her in concert. She did 2 hours and covered most of her classics and a couple songs from her new album. The crowds went crazy and it was a great show. The souvenirs were a bit disappointing...you had a choice of $20 signed CD or a red image of Alison on a white t-shirt for $30. No biggie. I went to the concert to hear her live. The backup singer was an interesting bloke who did a great job. He reminded us Divo, but without the costume. The concert and venue was amazing and we would definitely go again.

Alison Moyet facts: Yazoo singer's age, husband, children, songs and more revealed

25 April 2023, 15:50

Alison Moyet performs in 2019

Alison Moyet burst onto the scene in the early 1980s and became one of the decade's greatest singers.

Known for her powerful bluesy voice, Alison Moyet first came to prominence as half of the synthpop duo Yazoo alongside future Erasure star Vince Clarke.

Since then, she has scored huge success as a solo artist.

Alison has sold over 23 million records worldwide, with all nine of her studio albums and three compilation albums reaching the top 30 in the UK.

How old is Alison Moyet?

Full name Geneviève Alison Jane Moyet, she was born in Billericay, Essex, on June 18, 1961. She celebrated her 61st birthday in 2022.

She was born to a French father and English mother, and grew up in Basildon.

After leaving school aged 16, she worked as a shop assistant and trained as a piano tuner.

How did Alison Moyet get her music break?

When she was 20, Alison's pop career began in 1982 when Yazoo were formed alongside former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke.

Vince and Alison both grew up in Basildon and attended the same Saturday music school when they were 11.

  • The Story of... 'Only You' by Yazoo

Alison had spent her teens singing in various punk and blues bands, and placed an advert in the UK weekly music magazine Melody Maker in late 1981 asking for musicians to form a "rootsy" blues band.

The only reply she got was from Vince, who had recently surprised the industry by quitting Depeche Mode after their debut album and three hit singles, all of which he had written.

They didn't know each other, despite being in the same class at school. Vince had seen her sing live a few times. Knowing she had a great voice, he was looking for someone to sing on a demo of a song he had written called 'Only You'.

He said in 2008: "When I left Depeche I wasn't sure I'd still have a record deal and was keen to play the label something of my own, so I wrote the song 'Only You' but needed someone to demo it with. Alison happened to be advertising in a local paper so I called her."

The duo's biggest hits were 'Only You', 'Don't Go', 'Situation' and 'Nobody's Diary', and they released two albums.

Alison Moyet

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Alison Moyet

She was “all cried out” at “that ole devil called love”, but “is this love” is this alison moyet…, geneviève alison jane moyet (b.1961) was one of the biggest singers of the 1980’s, first as one half of yazoo and then with a string of hit singles and multi platinum albums of her own, she was a british star the world fell for, for the whole decade. born in essex, alison sang in three punk-rock bands of the late 1970’s-early 80’s before being noticed by depeche mode founder, vince clarke. clarke left the group in 1982 and with moyet, formed the synth-pop duo, yazoo. they released their debut single, “only you”, in march and it wasted no time in breaking the top ten in many countries..

The song peaked at No.2 in the UK and broke the US singles chart at No.67. Their follow up, “Don’t Go”, made the top three in the UK and No.1 on the US dance chart whilst charting top ten from Austria to Australia. Both songs came from their debut album, “Upstairs At Eric’s”, which became Platinum certified on both sides of the Atlantic. The album featured another US dance chart topper, “Situation”, and the UK chart hit “The Other Side Of Love”, before the end of the year. Yazoo wasted no time in writing, recording and releasing their follow up, “You And Me Both”, in 1983 along with the single, “Nobody’s Diary”, which gave them a third US dance chart topper and a third UK top three hit. The album topped the UK chart but almost as soon as Yazoo had started, they finished.

With just one single from the second album, Clarke moved on, briefly to form The Assembly in 1983 and then Erasure the following year, now the project that has consumed the past 35 years of his life. Moyet was signed by CBS who wanted to develop her as a solo artist with chart success in America in mind. Her first single, “Love Resurrection”, produced by Steve Jolley and Tony Swain, better known for their work with Bananarama, came in the Summer of 1984 and made No.10 in the UK and just barely made it to No.82 Stateside. More successful internationally, was her second single, “All Cried Out”, which made the top ten in most parts of Europe.

She released her debut album, “Alf” – her punk band nickname, in November. The album would top the UK chart and be certified quad Platinum for sale of more than 1.2 million copies. “Alf” would feature three more singles, “Invisible” (UK No.21, US No.31), her version of Billie Holiday’s 1944 classic, “That Ole Devil Called Love”, which Moyet took to No.2 in the UK and the German only released “For You Only” (No.7), in 1985. That year Alison performed at Live Aid at Wembley Stadium and after a short break, she began work on her second album.

The first taster of that album came at the end of 1986 with the more electro-pop sounding “Is This Love?”, which was a huge global hit, making the top ten in more than twenty countries. She recorded “Weak In The Presence Of Beauty”, a song originally recorded by British group Floy Joy earlier in 1986, but was not a hit. Together with producer Jimmy Lovine, Alison took her version into the top ten, just before her album, “Raindancing”, was released in April 1987. While “Raindancing” saw less interest in America, it topped the charts elsewhere and attained double Platinum status in the UK.

Two further singles, “Ordinary Girl” and “Sleeping Like Breathing”, were released during 1987, but these were less successful, although Alison returned to the top five at the end of the year with her version of Dick Haymes original 1945 recording of “Love Letters”, made famous by Kitty Lester in 1961. Moyet equaled Lester’s UK chart position of No.4 that Christmas. A remix of Yazoo’s “Situation”, not released commercially in the UK, saw both her and Clarke return to the top 40 in December 1990, reaching No.14, the first and last Yazoo UK chart hit and Alison’s last for some time.

Moyet began work on her third album in 1990 but took a different direction, more in line with her punk-rock roots of the late 70’s. The first single, “It Won’t Be Long”, stopped short of the top 40 in March 1991, while the album, “Hoodoo”, released the following month, could only achieve Silver status. The ballad, “Wishing You Were Here”, flopped big time while the third and final single, “This House”, just made it in at No.40. Neither the singles nor the album were received with any attention whatsoever in America, causing her record company to insist that her next album MUST be more commercially pop.

“Falling”, the first effort from that new album was released in late 1993, missing the UK top 40, although more successful was her version of Jules Shear’s 1983 recording of “Whispering Your Name”, which Alison released in 1994. The song returned her, as a solo artist, to the UK chart for the first time in six years, reaching No.18 as well as being a minor hit in Australia. Her fourth album, “Essex”, followed in April that year and would make a brief appearance on the US album chart. The singles “Getting Into Something” and “Ode To Boy” completed the quartet of releases from the album, but failed to generate much interest.

Alison fulfilled one more release with CBS, the “Singles” collection of 1995, which topped the UK chart and sold over 600,000 copies, before leaving the label. She joined the smaller Sanctuary label, a division of BMG the following year, although time was well spent crafting her first entry for them, which would take another six years. “Hometime” was released in August 2002 and would put her back in the UK top twenty as well as earning a Gold certification for 100,000 copies sold there. The album featured the singles “Should I Feel That It’s Over”, “Do You Ever Wonder?” and “More” and represented a good start to her time with the label.

In 2004, Alison recorded an album of cover versions, “Voice”, which featured the likes of “Windmills Of Your Mind”, “Alfie” and “Cry Me A River”, to name just three. Hardly surprisingly, “Voice” was a big success, putting her back in the UK top ten for the first time since “Raindancing”, seventeen years earlier. Moyet provided guest vocals on Moby’s 2006 hit “Slipping Away”, the year before she released her seventh album, “The Turn”, her first for label W14 Music as Sanctuary had by that time, been wound up. The album featured the charting single “One More Time”. W14 Music was short lived and by 2012, Moyet had moved to Cooking Vinyl, a label that has its roots in 1986, but had a flare for signing big names of the 80’s and 90’s with a view to reigniting their career.

Moyet teamed up with Guy Sigsworth (Seal, Madonna) for her first recording, returning to her synth-pop roots for the album, “The Minutes”, released in 2016 and crashing into the UK album chart at No.5, her highest charting studio release for 26 years and including the well received singles “When I Was Your Girl”, “Love Reign Supreme” and “Changeling”. Similarly well received was her 2017 follow up for Cooking Vinyl, “Other”, which Moyet returned to working with Sigsworth, resulting in a No.12 charting album in the UK, following the ‘teaser’ tracks “Reassuring Pinches” and “The Rarest Birds” in June of that year.

Alison has since recorded with a-ha and released two live albums, along with expanded editions of all her studio albums, pre-Cooking Vinyl, all of which have been lapped up by her fanbase. Alison posted a very personal message to her fans on her website on Christmas day 2020 in which she talks about ‘going away’ to deal with her long battle with ADHD. For how long, we have not been told ( read the transcript here ), but hopefully it won’t be long before she graces the airways with new music and in complete and full state of mind, body and soul.
