Internationals: England set to tour New Zealand in July 2024 – report

Steve Borthwick's first tour as England head coach will be to New Zealand, according to reports, while Ireland return to South Africa. England are set to face the All Blacks in a Test series in July 2024 after the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

Steve Borthwick’s first tour as England head coach will be to New Zealand, according to reports, while Ireland are set to return to South Africa.

England are poised to face the All Blacks in a Test series in July 2024 after the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

2024 July internationals

Due to the Rugby World Cup , there will be no traditional July tours next year, but the Times reports that Borthwick will face the challenging task of battling the All Blacks in New Zealand in 2024.

Borthwick takes charge of his first Six Nations campaign next year before four warm-up matches ahead of the Rugby World Cup. After the 2024 Six Nations, a trip to the land of the long white cloud follows.

England’s last tour to New Zealand was back in 2014 when Stuart Lancaster coached the side to a 3-0 series defeat.

Prior to that, England lost both their Tests against the All Blacks in 2008 but claimed a 15-13 win over New Zealand ahead of the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

The July internationals in 2024 could consist of just two Tests, according to the newspaper, in order to lessen the load on the players after the Rugby World Cup.

While England head to New Zealand, Australia are set to host Wales in a two-Test series with an option of a third match against the Wallabies or an emerging nation from the area.

South Africa is set to host Ireland for the first time since 2016, when a then-Joe Schmidt-coached side defeated the Springboks at home for the first time.

The report adds that France will head to Argentina that July while Italy will head to North America to face the United States and Canada. Finally, Scotland are set to play in the Pacific Islands, where they will likely front up against any of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.

Nations Championship

After the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour, it is reported that the Nations Championship will come into play which will see the traditional tours come to an end.

If instigated, Test teams will face multiple nations across July and November in a league format rather than a touring one.

All Blacks 2024 Test schedule announced

Home Tests in Dunedin, Auckland and Wellington and an historic clash with Fiji in San Diego headline a blockbuster 14-Test season for the All Blacks under new Head Coach Scott Robertson. New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has announced the All Blacks full 2024 Test schedule, which will start against England in front of home fans at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on Saturday 6 July for the first of three Steinlager Ultra Low Carb Series Tests. The All Blacks will play England in a return match at Eden Park in Auckland a week later before rounding out a unique third leg of the Steinlager Ultra Low Carb Series in a one-off rugby showcase in San Diego against fast-rising World Cup quarterfinalists Fiji. The All Blacks have played in San Diego once previously, against the USA in 1980. Back to back Tests against Argentina at Sky Stadium in Wellington on Saturday 10 August and Eden Park on Saturday 17 August respectively will kick off an All Blacks Lipovitan-D Rugby Championship defence before back to back Tests against the Springboks in South Africa. The Rugby Championship campaign concludes with Bledisloe Cup Tests in Sydney on 21 September, and Sky Stadium in Wellington on 28 September. The 2024 campaign concludes with a Northern Tour that starts against Japan in Yokohama on 26 October and takes in four November Tests against England, Ireland, France, and Italy. “Playing England under the roof in Dunedin is a great start for us in a world class stadium, and then we go up to Auckland where we have a great record that we are really proud of,” Robertson said. “We then fly off to San Diego which is exciting in itself. The Fijians know their way around the world, and they’ll come out from everywhere. I know a lot of Kiwis will make the trip as well.” Planning had already begun for the challenge that Argentina and Australia would present during the Rugby Championship while the tour to South Africa was expected to be another highlight, he said. “We are playing up on the Highveld at Ellis Park and then down to Cape Town - they are iconic Tests and I know a lot of Kiwis will be excited about that. It is a great chance to find out about ourselves against the world champions. It’s a chance to support us locally but also internationally. It’s also a chance to get behind this team and experience it with us, which is the exciting thing about it. And be proud to wear your All Blacks jersey no matter where we go.” All 14 All Blacks Tests will be live and exclusive in New Zealand on Sky TV. Tickets for the Steinlager Ultra Low Carb Series will go on sale to the public from 10am Wednesday 29 May. Tickets for the Lipovitan-D Rugby Championship will go sale to the public from 10am 19 June. Fans can register their interest to purchase tickets HERE NZR CEO Mark Robinson said: “There is no better way to start the year on home soil. To have four of the first five Tests of 2024 at home in Aotearoa Dunedin, Wellington and Auckland is a great result and we’re excited to be taking the All Blacks to San Diego to play Fiji. It’s been a long-held ambition for New Zealand Rugby and part of our wider strategy to increase the visibility and understanding of rugby in North America and to build our brand presence ahead the men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups in 2031 and 2033 respectively.  "The All Blacks and Fiji share a deep connection to the game of rugby and to the Pacific region and we’d like to thank USA Rugby and our event partner TEG Rugby Live for embracing the opportunity to bring this Test to America. We want to deliver an event that will capture the imagination of sports fans across the United States and showcases the best qualities of our game. It promises to be unique and entertaining afternoon of rugby and Pacific culture, and a great advertisement for the game.” Terry Davies, Dunedin Venues CEO said: “We are thrilled to be hosting the opening test of the year. Forsyth Barr Stadium last hosted England in 2014, so it's exciting to have them back for a great Northern versus Southern Hemisphere clash under the roof.” Warrick Dent, Wellington Regional Stadium Trust CEO said: “We are delighted to be once again hosting test rugby in Wellington at Sky Stadium and are particularly pleased to bring two All Blacks matches to the capital in 2024. The matches against Rugby World Cup semi-finalists Argentina in August and the Bledisloe Cup clash with Australia in September will undoubtedly be huge occasions for Wellingtonians and visitors alike.” Annie Dundas, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited Director of Destination said.

“Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland comes alive in winter when there’s an All Blacks test match in town. Since 2015 rugby test matches have boosted Auckland’s economy by $21 million and generated 170,000 visitor nights for the region. Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, the region’s economic and cultural agency, works hard to secure, support and invest in these games for Aucklanders and visitors to enjoy.” Nick Sautner, Eden Park CEO, was thrilled to be hosting England and Argentina: “With the All Blacks’ rich history and an unmatched winning record at Eden Park, New Zealand’s national stadium welcomes these two All Blacks fixtures to our great city for what are sure to be some of Auckland’s biggest sporting moments in 2024.”

England set for New Zealand tour in 2024

England last played a Test series in New Zealand in 2014

Steve Borthwick’s first tour as England head coach is set to be a box-office series against the All Blacks in 2024, a decade on from the national team’s previous trip to New Zealand.

There will be no summer tour in 2023, with Borthwick instead having the Six Nations and four warm-up matches on these shores for the World Cup, which starts in September, before England fly out to face the All Blacks the following year.

Wales are due to face Australia, Ireland are primed to go to South Africa and Scotland are set for Tests in the Pacific Islands. It is also understood that the plan is for France to visit Argentina and for Italy to play the United States and Canada.

england rugby tour to new zealand 2024

NEWS: New England coach Steve Borthwick’s maiden tour will be to New Zealand in 2024 for a test series against the All Blacks.

England have not played in New Zealand since 2014, when Stuart Lancaster was the head coach and they lost the series 3-0. They have faced the All Blacks only three times in the past eight years.

Borthwick has the Six Nations and four warm-up matches on these shores before the World Cup, which starts in September so there will be no summer tour next year.

Other nations who will be in action include Wales that are due to face Australia, Ireland are primed to go to South Africa and Scotland are set for tests in the Pacific Islands. It is also understood that the plan is for France to visit Argentina and for Italy to play the United States and Canada.

Borthwick has nine tests before the start of the World Cup since taking over as head coach from Eddie Jones. The latter never visited the land of the long white cloud during seven years at the helm as coach.

Five of those tests will come in the Six Nations, plus four World Cup warm-ups, against Wales (twice), Ireland and Fiji in August.

The full schedules for the trips have not been finalised, but it is believed that there are options for teams to add a third test against an emerging nation to their tour programme. For example, England could arrange an extra match against Fiji, Tonga, Samoa or the Māori All Blacks, if they wished to.

These match-ups between southern and northern hemisphere nations could be the last of the fully fledged traditional tours, as the British & Irish Lions will go to Australia in 2025, and then the Nations Championship is set to begin in 2026.

Global rugby executives are still finalising plans for a revamped calendar, with the centrepiece a 24-team, two-division international league with promotion and relegation and a grand final every two years.

If that is introduced by 2026, as planned, it would involve teams playing multiple countries in July and November as part of a league table, rather than the present model, in which stand-alone cross-hemisphere series are played each summer.

New Zealand versus England in Cricket: The Fellowship of the Oval

Move over Australia. Are the Black Caps England’s keenest rivals now?

England versus New Zealand has taken on a decidedly Lord of the Rings feel in recent years with more twists and turns than struggle for Middle Earth. Who can forget the nerve-wracking battle for the 2019 ODI World Cup when Kiwi-born Player of the Match Ben Stokes et al triumphed on a boundary countback following a deadlocked Super Over.

Then fast forward to 2022 when England dominated and whitewashed the Black Caps in three tests. Move on to 2023 and the latest episode in the series produced a plot-twist of a Kiwi follow-on win in Wellington. The series was drawn but there’s no doubt England’s 267 run victory in the first test was overshadowed by the tactics deployed, and the manner of defeat, in the second.

It’s a friendly rivalry of course but if you ever needed to add a little extra spice don’t forget that the originator of the no-holds barred strategy known as ‘Bazball’ is one Brendon McCullum, England’s Gandalf figure and a legend in Black Cap cricketing history.

The Return of the Kings and the quest for those rings!

The majestic Stokes and McCullum’s recent exploits have helped crown England’s ascent of the cricketing world and their return to New Zealand is likely to add a new chapter to the reign of Bazball. But returning to the land of their origin they’ll face a barrage of Black Cap bowlers and batsmen. A formidable team is currently led by Tim Southee who can call on the talismanic Kane Williamson, the safe hands of Tom Blundell or the ever youthful athleticism of Neil Wagner.

As of early 2023 our venues for the test tour of New Zealand are yet to be revealed. However, we’re hopeful that you’ll get to pull up a ringside seat in Wellington’s historic Basin Reserve, the venue for McCullum’s own 300 run innings and Richard Hadlee’s 300 th test wicket. Alternatively you may find yourself in Auckland’s hot and humid arena of dreams at Eden Park, home to not just cricket but many a riotous rugby match. Or who could be happier than to be in Hamilton lounging on a sun-kissed grassy bank beside a pitch renowned for its run-making possibilities.

New Zealand attractions and adventures

New Zealand – also known as Aotearoa – justly revels in the title of adventure capital of the world. A whole industry has sprung up around the production of adrenaline from whitewater rafting and mountain biking to death defying skydiving and bungy jumping. While we’re on tour we can help organise a range of thrill-seeking activities and unforgettable attractions in New Zealand’s south and north islands.

But there is so much more.

The land of the long white cloud stretches from the rainforests to the icy waters where whales migrate. In between you can enjoy the bright lights and of Auckland, the City of Sails, or visit the tremor-induced terraces of Wellington, the political and cultural capital of this small, vibrant nation. You can feast your senses on the geysers and hot springs of Rotorua or delve deep underground to marvel at the magical glow worm caves of Waitomo.

And of course, no journey would be complete without a beer in the Green Dragon, centrepiece of the Ring Trilogy and Hobbit’s miniaturised film set.

Amy Jones bats

A super win there for England, that record-breaking seventh-wicket partnership of 130 taking them from what looked like the mire to fertile pastures. Great to see Jones looking so confident after a tricky T20 series, and so encouraging for England to watch Dean playing with such panache. Bouchier sparkled for her 31 but England were in deep trouble at 79-6.

Highest 7th wicket partnership in a women's ODI: 130* Amy Jones & Charlie Dean (ENG) v NZ, today 122 Sneh Rana & Pooja Vastrakar (IND) v NZ, 2022 114 Aliya RIaz & Fatima Sana (PAK) v SA, 2023 The previous record in a run chase before Jones & Dean had been 87. #NZvENG — hypocaust (@_hypocaust) April 1, 2024

From 90-0, New Zealand’s innings fell away with the dismissal of Bates. The fact that they had England in such deep trouble with the ball will give succour, but they let them off the hook with defensive field placing and some pretty ropey fielding on the boundary.

The whole shebang moves on to Hamilton on Thursday. That’s it from the Basin Reserve, and my sofa, time to grab a couple more hours of snooze. Thanks for reading, bye!

Heather Knight looks happy . “I felt like we were in a really good position at the half way stage, I don’t know how many times Kate beat the outside edge, she certainly deserved her luck. Nat isn’t used to bowling ten overs but she’s an athlete. [Thoughts while watching the seventh-wicket partnership?]How much Deano’s improved her batting, got her rewards for that. Jones, made some brilliant reflections [on not managing a chase in the T20], the way they soaked up pressure and did partnership rebuild was a brilliant lesson for us all.

New Zealand captain Melie Kerr must give her thoughts. “I thought Susie was outstanding [with the bat] but we lost wickets in clumps, I thought Kate Cross bowled really well there and we didn’t really have any answers to the changes of pace or variation. But one more wicket and we could have won with the score on 20o. When Dean and Jones walked out to bat, one more wicket and we were down to the tail. I thought they both batted incredibly but another time we’d get a bit more luck. Their partnership was outstanding, we didn’t have any answer to that.”

The player of the match is … Amy Jones. “I tried to be as positive as possible, respecting the good ball as well. I’ve done a bit of work going through mindset in run chases and that paid off as well. [with the gloves] My first game here I had a shocker, but gradually got used to it, really enjoyed it here today.”

New Zealand really let that one slip away through their fingers. England go one up in the three-match series, having already taken the T20 series 4-1.

England win by four wickets!

41.2 overs: England 209-6 ( Jones 92, Dean 42)… but its Dean who gets the pleasure, a four which dribbles over the rope. What a sensational fight-back of a partnership, unbroken for the seventh wicket, 130 in 147 balls.

41st over: England 205-6 ( Jones 92, Dean 38) England need 3 to win. Tahuhu’s final over and bizarrely they take an ad break half way through – come back to find Jess Kerr has dropped an overhead catch to give Jones a chance to hit the winning runs…

40th over: England 197-6 ( Jones 85, Dean 37) England need 11 off 10 overs Jonas, baby faced, left arm twirl. Just a single and a wide. The small crowd are staying on as this slips from New Zealand’s grasp.

39th over: England 195-6 ( Jones 84, Dean 37) England need 13 off 11 overs A half run out chance, but Dean makes it back, then I temporarily lose signal but there’s nine from the over.

38th over: England 187-6 ( Jones 78, Dean 35) England need 22 off 13 overs Jonas, but no cigar.

37th over: England 181-6 ( Jones 73, Dean 34) England need 27 off 13 overs Jess Kerr comes back, and just the single from it.

36th over: England 180-6 ( Jones 72, Dean 34) England need 28 off 14 overs Dab, dab, then an up and over periscope by Dean for a couple. And that’s the 100 parnership off 113 balls, warmly applauded by the pair’s team-mates sitting on the grass round the boundary. Just boringly sensible batting.

35th over: England 174-6 ( Jones 70, Dean 30) England need 34 off 15 overs Kerr gambles on bowling herself out – 2-46. This should be easy for England now.

34th over: England 169-6 ( Jones 67, Dean 29) England need 38 off 16 overs Tahuhu. England steal a quick single – they’re having fun out there. Now Jones pulls and there’s another fumble on the rope, this time for Rowe, and the ball dribbles for four more. New Zealand’s fielders on the rope must have given away 15-20 runs here.

33rd over: England 164-6 ( Jones 62, Dean 28) England need 44 off 17 overs. Kerr again. Jones smashes her down the ground for four. And another, over the off side this time. Have New Zealand left their big guns till too late, now these two have their eye in? The total needed drops below fifty.

Fifty for Amy Jones

32nd over: England 152-6 ( Jones 53, Dean 25) Tahuhu back, as New Zealand throw everything at the Jones/Dean problem. Nearly works as Jones pulls, but just in front of Maddy Green. And that’s the Jones fifty (51 balls) with a lofted four. And England now only need 56 to win.

31st over: England 145-6 ( Jones 46, Dean 25) Kerr brings herself back on, just as the commentators were asking. Makes sense, New Zealand need to get one of these two of this game is going to race away from them. One spins past the outside edge of Jones, but they pick up a handful of singles. Time for DRINKS!

30th over: England 141-6 ( Jones 44, Dean 23) Four dots from Rowe, then Jones spoils the pot by pulling with venom and picking up four. And that’s four more, nearly ironed, down the ground, evading the chasing A Kerr. 67 needed.

29th over: England 133-6 ( Jones 36, Dean 23) Just a couple off Jess Kerr’s over, and the first email of the day lands. Hello Damian Clarke!

“Poi making. The spinning balls or the yoghurty paste?

At this time on a sleepless night, the devil is in the detail.”

Definitely the spinnings balls – I had to google the yogurty paste. “a thick paste of pounded bananas or pineapples mixed with coconut cream” sounds delicious.

28th over: England 131-6 ( Jones 35, Dean 22) A long discussion between Rowe and Melie Kerr. And with a shimmy from Dean that’s the fifty partnership in 63 balls. Four more off the over, without the need for anything risky.

27th over: England 127-6 ( Jones 34, Dean 19) Jones has the bit between her teeth. Goes down the ground for a couple, then over extra cover for four more. Bowler Jess Kerr, who always looks slightly concerned, wrinkles her nose.

26th over: England 118-6 ( Jones 26, Dean 18) Another chance I think….as Rowe throws herself forward to pick up a leading edge from Jones – , no actually I think it just falls short.

25th over: England 115-6 ( Jones 24, Dean 17) A run-out chance! Jones – I think it is – hits straight and would have been beaten if the throw had hit. At the half way stage, England need another 93 to win. Runs not an issue here, and New Zealand could do with knocking over one of these two, who are scoring relatively easily.

24th over: England 111-6 ( Jones 22, Dean 15) England rebuilding brick by brick.

23rd over: England 106-6 ( Jones 19, Dean 13) The magnificent Debbie Hockley pops on comms to celebrate 40 years since New Zealand’s tour of England, apparently it consisted of 12 – 12! - county matches slotted between 3 ODIs and 3 Tests. They drove round England in mini-vans. “It was fun” she says.

22nd over: England 101-6 ( Jones 18, Dean 9) Jonas for her first over, but the field is defensive – too many easy runs, says Alex Hartley. Some more sloppy fielding by New Zealand on the rope gifts Amy Jones a boundary.

21st over: England 93-6 ( Jones 13, Dean 3) Four off the first two balls; Dean sweeps and misses the legspinner.

20th over: England 89-6 ( Jones 12, Dean 3)) An absolute snorter of a ball to complete Tahuhu’s over which lifts with a snarl, bewilders Wyatt who gets a handle? on it and the ball loops up…. but just over the keeper.

19th over: England 85-6 ( Jones 9, Dean 2 ) Melie Kerr again. Tossing it high. Three runs to Jones then its left to Dean who tries, without success, to get her away.

England doing an England here 😬 #NZvENG pic.twitter.com/j2wF510nGE — Raf Nicholson (@RafNicholson) April 1, 2024

18th over: England 82-6 ( Jones 6, Dean 2 ) Tahuhu hits Wyatt on the elbow, but she picks up a couple next ball. Beaten by the last.
