110. Tour de France Der Doping-Verdacht fährt weiter mit

Die Tour de France ist in ihre 110. Ausgabe gestartet. Nach turbulenten Jahren mit riesigen Doping-Skandalen vermitteln Vertreter der Szene gerne den Eindruck, man sei in der Normalität eines sauberen Sports angekommen. Doch davon ist der Radsport weit entfernt, wie eine Bestandsaufnahme der ARD-Dopingredaktion zeigt.

Phil Bauhaus blickte am Start der Slowenien-Rundfahrt vor einigen Tagen genervt in die Kamera. Das Thema Doping sei "grundsätzlich natürlich immer doof", sagte der deutsche Fahrer des Teams Bahrain Victorious: "Das kommt immer auf zur Tour de France, sonst natürlich nie." Er bezeichnete diesen Umstand sarkastisch als "komischen Zufall".   

Doping bleibt ein Reizthema in der Szene. Von einer Rückkehr zur Normalität, von der Funktionäre, Sponsoren und auch Fahrer nach den riesigen Doping-Skandalen rund um die Jahrtausendwende gerne sprechen, ist der Radsport weit entfernt.  

WADA-Statistik: 1.522 Dopingfälle in acht Jahren

Noch immer laufen in mehreren Ländern Ermittlungen, noch immer beschäftigen Spitzenteams hochbelastete Akteure. Noch immer funktioniert die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Anti-Doping-Einrichtungen und staatlichen Behörden offenbar nur unzureichend. Und noch immer liefert der Radsport Hunderte Dopingfälle. Auffällig: Nur beim bedeutendsten Rennen überhaupt scheint alles sauber zu sein. Seit 2015, seit Luca Paolini nach einem positiven Test auf Kokain abreisen musste, hat es bei der Tour de France keinen einzigen offiziellen Dopingfall mehr gegeben.

Die Welt-Anti-Doping-Agentur WADA vermerkt in ihren Listen - nur die von 2013 bis 2020 sind derzeit öffentlich einsehbar - penibel offizielle Dopingfälle. Im Radsport sind es in diesem Zeitraum insgesamt: 1.522. Selbst den "Spitzenreiter" lässt der Radsport de facto hinter sich: In der Leichtathletik werden zwar 1.757 sogenannte ADRVs (Anti-Doping-Regelverstöße) verzeichnet, dort wird aber auch häufiger getestet. Die Quote der Ertappten ist im Radsport (0,85 Prozent bei 178.167 Tests) höher als in der Leichtathletik (0,77 Prozent bei 229.307 Tests). Wie realistisch ist es also angesichts solcher Zahlen, dass ausgerechnet beim größten Straßenradrennen der Welt, der Tour de France, niemand dopt?  

An hoher Abschreckung durch ein effektives Anti-Doping-System liegt es offensichtlich nicht, dass seit acht Jahren bei der "großen Schleife" niemand mehr aufflog. Beispiel Slowenien: Bei einem Besuch der Nationalen Anti-Doping-Agentur des kleinen Landes, das seit dem Aufstieg der Überflieger Tadej Pogačar und Primož Roglič im Zentrum vieler Verdächtigungen steht, offenbarten sich der ARD-Dopingredaktion bemerkenswerte Defizite. 

Sloweniens NADA-Chef: Doping "kommt aus dem Ausland"

Janko Dvoršak bringt als Chef der slowenischen NADA, so sollte man meinen, schon qua Amt den weltweit dominierenden Radprofis aus dem Zwei-Millonen-Einwohner-Staat und den Strukturen dahinter ein Mindestmaß an Misstrauen entgegen. Stattdessen stellt er einen merkwürdigen Persilschein aus: "Für Doping braucht es Technologie und Geld. Diese Bedingungen gibt es nicht in Slowenien. Ich glaube, das kommt hauptsächlich aus dem Ausland."

Details der "Operation Aderlass" um den Erfurter Blutdoping-Doktor Mark S. kennt er nur aus den Medien, sagt Dvoršak. Dabei führen im größten Dopingskandal der vergangenen Jahre außerhalb Russlands viele Spuren nach Slowenien. Wegen Kontakten zu den Erfurter Blutpanschern wurden unter anderem Kristjan Koren und Borut Bozic gesperrt, beides Slowenen aus dem Team Bahrain.

Milan Erzen, der aktuelle Manager der Equipe, ist ebenfalls Slowene. Er wurde von Marc S. nach dessen Festnahme in einer Vernehmung des Zolls schwer belastet. Erzen habe, so S. in seiner Aussage, reges Interesse an einer Geschäftsbeziehung sowie am Erwerb einer Maschine zur Blutaufbereitung gezeigt, erklärte ein Ermittler während der Münchner Prozesse zur "Operation Aderlass". Erzen bestreitet beides.

"Ermittlungen gehen uns nichts an"

"Die Ermittlungen sind Sache der Polizei und gehen uns nichts an. Strafverfolgung und Anti-Doping-Arbeit müssen klar getrennt sein", sagt Sloweniens oberster Doping-Bekämpfer Dvoršak - und widerspricht damit den jüngsten, investigativen Bestrebungen der WADA. Auch Amina Lanaya, Generaldirektorin des Weltverbandes UCI, hatte zuletzt die Notwendigkeit einer besseren Vernetzung mit staatlichen Stellen betont: "Für mich sind Tests nicht mehr das wichtigste Instrument im Kampf gegen Doping. Aufklärungsarbeit und Nachforschung sind es. Wir müssen Hand in Hand mit den Polizeibehörden arbeiten."

Die heimische NADA führt die slowenischen Top-Fahrer um Pogačar und Roglič nicht mal in ihrem Testpool. Dvoršak betont, für die Kontrollen sei der Weltverband und die von der UCI beauftragte Internationale Test-Agentur ITA zuständig. Dabei mahnt die WADA in ihren Testrichtlinien: "Auch wenn Athleten auf nationaler Ebene nicht im Land der nationalen Anti-Doping-Organisation trainieren, ist dennoch die NADA dafür verantwortlich, dass diese Athleten Kontrollen im Ausland unterzogen werden."

Ermittlungsstatus unklar

2021 und 2022 gab es vor beziehungsweise während der Tour de France Razzien beim Team Bahrain. Etliche Betreuer und einige der Fahrer des Rennstalls stammen aus Slowenien. Wie der Status der Ermittlungen staatlicher Behörden gegen das Team ist, ist unklar. Eurojust, die mit dem Fall vertraute Agentur der Europäischen Union für justizielle Zusammenarbeit in Strafsachen, verwies an die Staatsanwaltschaft Marseille. Die wiederum wollte auf ARD-Anfrage nur bestätigen, dass in der Causa noch ermittelt werde.

Ähnlich dürftig ist die Informationslage in Spanien. Dort läuft seit Anfang 2021 die "Operacion Ilex" gegen ein mögliches neues Dopingnetzwerk. Auch hier heißt es: Die Ermittlungen dauern an. Das kasachische Pro-Tour-Team Astana suspendierte im Zuge dessen im vergangenen Jahr bereits seinen kolumbianischen Top-Star Miguel Angel Lopez. Kurz zuvor war bekannt geworden, dass Lopez in Verbindung mit den Ermittlungen der spanischen Guardia Civil steht. Der Fahrer bestreitet jegliches Fehlverhalten. 

Zu den Beschuldigten gehört auch Vicente Belda Garcia, der ehemalige Physiotherapeut des Teams Astana. Er lehnt auf ARD-Anfrage einen Kommentar zu möglichen Doping-Verstrickungen ab. Belda wird vom möglichen Drahtzieher des Netzwerks, Marcos Maynar, beschuldigt. Der Biophysiker soll nach Erkenntnissen der Ermittler in Russland und anderen Ländern verbotene Substanzen erworben und an Radsportler verkauft haben. Er war für eine Stellungnahme nicht zu erreichen.  

Hämoglobin vom Wattwurm

Ebenfalls im Visier der Ermittler ist der langjährige Kelme-Team-Manager Vicente Belda, Vater des Physiotherapeuten Vicente junior. Vicente senior stand einst in engem Kontakt zu Eufemiano Fuentes, dem Drahtzieher im größten Doping-Fall der Radsportgeschichte: der Operacion Puerto, die letztlich auch Jan Ullrich zu Fall brachte. Womöglich gibt es sie noch im Radsport, die alten Seilschaften.  

Immer neu befeuert werden die Gerüchte über "Mittel der Wahl" innerhalb des Pelotons. Zuletzt im Gespräch: eine Substanz aus dem Hämoglobin des Wattwurms, dessen Blut 40-mal mehr Sauerstoff speichern kann als das menschliche.  

Keine Tour de France ohne Doping-Verdacht - das gilt auch im Jahr 2023.

Tour de France 2023, Doping: Welche Fahrer haben gedopt?

Die Tour de France 2023 ist in vollem Gange. Doch wie immer führt auch in diesem Jahr an der Doping-Frage vorbei. Welche Fahrer des Rennens haben schon einmal gedopt? Hier erfahrt Ihr es.

Wie jedes Jahr fahren auch bei der diesjährigen Tour de France nicht nur die besten Radfahrer der Welt mit, sondern auch der Verdacht auf Doping. Die illegitime Einnahme von leistungssteigernden Substanzen hat im Radsport nun mal eine lange Historie.

Jan Ullrich und Lance Armstrong sind dabei nur zwei bekannte Beispiele aus einer langen Liste von Siegern der Tour de France, denen der oder sogar die Titel nachträglich aberkannt wurden.

Mittlerweile liegt der letzte positive Test beim französischen Radrennen zwar bereits acht Jahre zurück, doch abseits der Tour de France floriert das Dopinggeschäft nach wie vor. Wie die Welt-Anti-Doping-Agentur WADA mitteilte, wurden von 2013 bis 2020 insgesamt 1.522 Fälle gezählt. Die Quote der Ertappten liegt mit 0,85 Prozent sogar noch höher als in der Leichtathletik.

In den vergangenen Jahren spielten sich vor allem zwei Teams in den Fokus der Strafverfolgungsbehörden: Das kasachische Astana Team sowie Bahrain Victorious. Bei letzterem hat es während respektive vor der Tour de France-Rennen 2021 und 2022 mehrere Razzien gegeben. Mit Kristjan Koren und Borut Bozic, beide aus Slowenien, wurden sogar zwei Fahrer gesperrt.

Das ehemalige Pro Tour-Team Astana hat mit ähnlichen Problemen zu kämpfen. Seit 2021 ermittelt die spanische Polizei im Rahmen der "Operacion Ilex" gegen ein potentielles Dopingnetzwerk. Im Zuge dessen wurden auch Vorwürfe gegen Astana-Starfahrer Miguel Angel Lopez laut. Der Rennstall suspendierte den Kolumbianer daraufhin. Lopez selbst bestreitet jegliche Vorwürfe.

Tour de France: Die Doping-Historie

Bis heute hat es zahlreiche nachweislich gedopte Tour-Sieger gegeben. Die schlimmste Serie trug sich in den Jahren 1999 bis 2006 zu. Durch später Erkenntnisse wurden alle sieben Titel nachträglich aberkannt. Die Folge war eine anhaltende Glaubwürdigkeitskrise im Radsport, die man in den vergangenen Jahren zurückzuerlangen versucht. Eine Auswahl der bekanntesten Fälle.

Pedro Delgado 1988

Der Tour-Sieg von Pedro Delgado ist als erster gedopter Tour-Sieg in die Geschichte eingegangen. Nachträglich wurde dem Spanier das Verschleierungsmittel Probenicid nachgewiesen. Eine Sanktion gab es allerdings nicht, wodurch er bis heute den Triumph von 1988 sein Eigen nennen kann.

Jan Ullrich 1998

Deutschlands einziger Tour de France-Sieger feierte seine größten Erfolge in den späten 1990er Jahren. 1987 belegte er den ersten Platz des Rennens. Im darauffolgenden Jahr musste er sich Marco Pantani für Platz zwei geschlagen geben. Doch auch dieser wurde ihm später wieder aberkannt. Wie eine Nachanalyse im Jahr 2004 verriet, hatte Ullrich bei der Tour gedopt. 2002 musste er zudem eine sechsmonatige Sperre wegen Amphetaminmissbrauchs absitzen.

Lance Armstrong 1999-2005

Von 1999 bis 2005 war Lance Armstrong das Nonplusultra der Radsportwelt. Wie sich später jedoch herausstellte, war er nicht nur auf dem Rennrad schnell unterwegs. Bei allen Titeln hatte er nachweislich gedopt, sodass mittlerweile alle Erfolge aberkannt worden sind. Wegen des langjährigen Betrugs wurde Armstrong letztendlich zu einer lebenslangen Sperre verurteilt.

Tour de France Winner Jan Ullrich Admits to Doping and the Aftermath of Drug Abuse

“It turned me into a monster.”

He dropped the truth bomb Wednesday at a panel for his documentary, saying simply, “Yes, I did dope,” according to German website Speigel.de . He said the doping began in 1996, the year before he won the Tour de France. (“I was young and naive and came into an existing system,” he said .)

In this translated interview, Ullrich seemed to be using that old chestnut, the ‘but everyone else was doing it’ excuse. “Knowing that you otherwise have no chance from the start was the hardest thing,” said Ullrich [translated]. “Because I’m a fair person, it was never about cheating anyone or gaining an advantage.”

Amongst his chief rivals was Lance Armstrong—who ultimately became a close friend after they’d both left the sport.

Ullrich was ultimately suspended in 2006 right before the start of the Tour de France, as part of the blood doping ring run by Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes . This suspension marked the end of his pro cycling career, and in the documentary, he openly talks about his sharp downturn that happened a decade later.

He experienced a mental and physical breakdown which led to issues with alcohol, cocaine abuse, and eventually, an assault on a prostitute in 2019, for which he was fined and received a criminal record . He admitted in an interview that his addiction to whiskey and cocaine “turned him into a monster.”

Should Ullrich be allowed to keep his yellow jersey?

Ullrich was also questioned as to whether he should be allowed to keep his 1997 Tour de France title, given his admission. He said that he believes he should be allowed to keep it, but that the choice isn’t up to him.

Now, his children are involved in cycling, and he hopes to be as well—how much he’ll be allowed to will depend on how the German governing body takes his doping admission. But Ullrich does seem to be in a healthier, happier place and has rekindled his love of cycling, whether or not the cycling world will welcome him with open arms.

The four-part documentary on Ullrich is titled ‘Der Gejagte’ (translation: ‘The Hunted’), and will be released on Amazon Prime in Germany from November 28, 2023. TBD if it will be released stateside.

Radsport-Superstar Jonas Vingegaard steht nach zwei weiteren herausragenden Leistungen beim Bergzeitfahren und auf der Königsetappe nach Courchevel vor seinem zweiten Gesamtsieg bei der Tour de France. Nach seiner Machtdemonstration auf der 17. Etappe bekräftigte der Däne, dass bei ihm alles mit rechten Dingen zugeht.

Die Tour de France scheint endgültig entschieden zu sein, Herausforderer Tadej Pogacar geschlagen. Jonas Vingegaard hat sein Polster in der Gesamtwertung nach seinem Ritt rauf auf den Col de Laloze auf insgesamt 7:35 Minuten ausgebaut. Alles spricht dafür, dass der 26-Jährige zum zweiten Mal in Folge als Sieger nach Paris fahren wird.

Aufgrund der schwarzen Doping-Geschichte bei vergangenen Ausgaben der Tour de France muss sich Vingegaard immer wieder gegen Vermutungen wehren, er habe sich unerlaubte Vorteile verschafft.

Den beinahe chronischen Argwohn bei Beobachtern kann der Fahrer von Jumbo-Visma sogar nachvollziehen, wie er schon nach der 15. Etappe der Frankreich-Rundfahrt zugegeben hatte. Vier Blutproben binnen 48 Stunden bei Vingegaard entnommen

Nach seiner Weltklasse-Leistung auf der 17. Etappe bekräftigte Vingegaard nun, dass er keinerlei unerlaubte Mittel zu sich nimmt. 

"Ich verstehe, dass es schwierig ist, dem Radsport mit all seiner Geschichte zu trauen. Heutzutage ist alles anders als noch vor 20 Jahren", so der Däne, der einen weiteren Doping-Schwur leistete: "Ich kann es mit der Hand auf dem Herzen sagen: Ich nehme nichts und werde nichts nehmen, was ich nicht meiner zweijährigen Tochter geben würde."

Jumbo-Visma-Sportchef Arthur van Dongen merkte zudem an, dass man im Team auf etwaige Skepsis "vorbereitet" gewesen sei: "Es ist jedes Jahr dasselbe. Wir sagen, wie wir arbeiten und wir kennen Jonas. Wir haben keine Zweifel."

Jonas Vingegaard und dessen ärgster Konkurrent Tadej Pogacar hatten sich nach Angaben von "WielerFlits" zuletzt am Morgen vor der 17. Etappe einer Dopingkontrolle unterzogen. Eine Stunde vor dem Start wurden beiden Sportlern Blutproben entnommen. Richard Plugge, Teammanager von Jumbo-Visma, befürwortete das Vorgehen: "Damit machen wir einen weiteren Schritt im Kampf gegen Doping. Bei Jonas Vingegaard wurden in den letzten 48 Stunden nicht weniger als vier Blutuntersuchungen durchgeführt. Daran beteiligen wir uns gerne."

The ITA is ready to deliver a robust anti-doping program for the 2023 Tour de France

The international testing agency (ita), leading the cycling clean sport efforts on behalf of the union cycliste internationale (uci), is prepared to protect fair play at the tour de france through a comprehensive anti-doping program. after already ensuring a level playing field at the giro d’italia in may, the ita is collaborating with all involved stakeholders, including the french authorities, to protect clean sport at one of the world’s most prestigious cycling events..

It is the third time that the ITA will independently lead the clean sport program for the Tour de France since the delegation of cycling’s anti-doping activities by the UCI. The ITA is in charge of the overall clean sport strategy for the French Grand Tour, including the definition of an intelligence-led testing plan. This plan is applied on the basis of a bespoke risk assessment that takes into account a weighed variety of relevant factors whilst constantly adapting to current circumstances or new information through permanent monitoring. The testing plan also considers any relevant information received through the monitoring of the athletes’ Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) and any insights gathered by the ITA’s Intelligence & Investigations department.

All doping controls at the Tour de France will be targeted and performed anytime over the course of the three-week race, not only at the finish line. At every stage, the yellow jersey and stage winner will be tested. Additionally, all athletes will already be tested before the start of the event as part of their medical monitoring. At the end of the race, the ITA will make a selection of samples that will be kept for potential re-analysis over the next 10 years.

Doping controls will mainly be conducted by the ITA’s own Doping Control Officer (DCO) force with in-depth cycling experience. For the roll-out of the anti-doping program, the ITA collaborates with the French National Anti-Doping Organisation (AFLD), who will offer support with their doping control personnel. The ITA is also in close contact with other relevant French and international actors, for example with authorities at different sectoral levels, for support and information-exchange.

Furthermore, 2023 marks the first year of increased resources to foster fairer cycling . The UCI, UCI WorldTeams, UCI ProTeams, UCI WorldTour organisers, and men’s Professional Road Cyclists have decided to strengthen the ITA’s capacity to protect the integrity of the sport with a gradual 35% budget increase until the end of 2024. This funding primarily supports areas such as Intelligence & Investigations (I&I), testing, science, data analysis, long-term sample storage, and sample re-analysis.

“We are looking forward to delivering the anti-doping program for this major cycling race for the third time under the responsibility of the ITA and in collaboration with our partners to ensure a level playing field during the event,” said ITA Director General Benjamin Cohen. “As the testing operations for this event are already at a vigorous level, the additional resources stemming from the decision of the cycling stakeholders to further protect the sport from doping will allow us to step up in other relevant areas of the clean sport program for the Tour de France and throughout the year. Most notably, it allows us to invest more in intelligence and investigations, an area that has proven to be very effective and complementary to the testing regime. We are steadfast in our commitment to ensure a clean and fair competition environment for all participants in this highly anticipated event.”

A Jonas Vingegaard � Tadej Pogacar duel is announced. The two riders have smashed everything since the start of the year and seem three legs above the other contenders for the yellow jersey.

This Tour did not disappoint, if we dare not say. Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar have effectively "destroyed" their opponents. After which Vingegaard also smashed his Slovenian opponent.

Is ‘technological fraud’ a real threat at the tour de france, the uci x-rays the stage-winner and yellow jersey bikes every day..

How serious is the threat of “technological fraud” in the Tour de France? And what is the UCI doing to try to keep the genie in the bottle?

Velo queried several Tour riders and team officials across the peloton as well as spoke to the UCI officials in charge of the controls.

The UCI conducts dozens of daily X-rays and scans across the peloton every day.

“To be honest, I am in the bunch, and I don’t think it’s happening,” Caleb Ewan told Velo before he left the Tour.  “It’s true, the guys are flying,  but it’s down to bikes are faster, knowledge and training improves, and it’s normal that the sport evolves every year, everyone gets better and better. It’s human evolution.”

Following UCI protocols, bikes are X-rayed every day from the yellow jersey, along with the bikes of all the stage-winners, jersey-holders, and other random riders.

The UCI expressed confidence its controls are sending out the right message.

“I think it’s very difficult,” UCI’s Michael Rogers, who heads up the UCI’s efforts to combat technological fraud, told Velo . “We also need to think of the other side. It’s an extreme risk,  and the risk/benefit ratio is out of whack, but we need to stay present.”

Staying present — that’s what the UCI insists it’s doing with its staff of three or four officials who ply the peloton every day.

They scan dozens of bikes each morning with a hand-held device that can detect magnets. Another mobile, hand-held X-ray device was introduced this year to complement the UCI’s finish-line X-ray system.

They’re looking for motors, batteries, cables, or any large, dense mass that otherwise is not part of a modern-day carbon-fiber bike build.

So far in the 2023 Tour, there’s been no evidence of technological fraud in the peloton. In fact, there’s never been since the UCI rolled out its high-profile X-ray program nearly five years ago .

There have been hints of hidden motors for years, however, with rumors of major one-day monuments and even grand tour performances clouded in suspicion. YouTube is full of videos describing how they can be used.

Oddly spinning wheels, random wheel changes, and sudden accelerations following strange hand movements on handlebars were tell tale signs, but nothing was ever rooted out.

In 2016, a Belgian rider was caught with a motor-assisted bike during a cyclocross race. There were rumors of a rider using a motor-assisted bike last year in one of Italy’s top gran fondos .

Sensing the sport’s credibility was in question, the UCI’s redoubled its efforts to stop would-be cheats. The cycling governing began using a thermal-heat sensor and then rolled out a mobile X-ray facility.

With the improved technology of electric bikes, however, many insist the technology already exists to hide and mask motors in today’s racing bikes that are already laden with batteries for electronic shifting.

But would someone dare use it in the Tour de France?

“In the pro ranks, I would be surprised. I don’t think it’s a real issue,” Ag2r-Citroën’s Oliver Naesen told Velo . “Every day in the race communiqué we see the bikes that are scanned, and they all come back negative. I have never read anything of anybody having any anything illegal on the bike.

“On this bike, there is a big battery in the seat post for the derailleurs. There is electricity in the shifters for the derailleurs, but motors and engines? Not as far as I know of.”

“Personally I don’t think it’s happening. I am an optimist. It’s the same with doping, I think the sport’s quite clean,” Israel-Premier Tech’s Michael Woods told Velo . “I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened in the past, but for it to be happening today, I don’t know.

“I won the other day [Puy de Dôme] and I didn’t have a motor in my bike,” Woods said. “The fans and the pundits are going to speculate, but that’s part of sport.”

Could someone use some sort of motorized assistance, not to necessarily go faster, but to ride easier across the stage to stay fresh for a key acceleration?

Or what about swapping out bikes during a stage, and riding a “clean” bike to the line where the X-ray crews are waiting?

Rogers insisted the UCI is keeping a sharp eye on the bikes raced on during each stage at the Tour.

Rogers told Velo that the team of UCI officials working the Tour this month are especially vigilant for any sort of suspicious performances, oddly timed bike changes, and frequent changes of wheels or other equipment.

“It’s quite a broad program. We have people tagging bikes after the race for X-rays,” Rogers told Velo . “We work closely with VAR [ed – instant replay], with watching video for suspicious kind of activity, bike changes, wheels changes, and we’ll keep track of those.”

Bikes can also be dismantled in what would be the ultimate control.

In the 2020 Tour, Jumbo-Visma’s top sport director was kicked out of the race after arguing with a UCI technician who insisted on taking apart Primož Roglič’s bike atop the Col de la Loze stage.

There was no motorized assistance found, but team officials were enraged after they said the UCI technician damaged the crankset.

Some pros believe that the UCI’s controls should be doing more.

Benoît Cosnefroy of Ag2r-Citroën told journalist James Startt that he doesn’t think the UCI controls are enough.

“I don’t know if there is any mechanical doping, but it’s possible in my opinion, and for me it’s a real problem because there is not a real fight against this,” Cosnefroy said. “It’s a question of credibility for our sport. It’s not like doping, where it is in your system and they can keep a flask and test it again some time in the future.

“With mechanical doping, there is no trace of it,” he said. “The bike is taken away and if something is wrong, there is no possible trace of it. For me the UCI is not doing enough.”

Rogers of the UCI insists the cycling federation is staying on top of the game.

“It’s important that we stay present and we keep up with technology,” Rogers told Velo . “We keep current, and we make sure we protect the integrity of the sport. The public are asking that, and there have been a lot of rumors in the past.

“We have to protect the riders by saying we check these things, and to send a message to the general public that the results are of full integrity.”

And what would happen if a stage winner at the Tour would be caught with a motor inside their bike?

“That would be really shocking, to be honest,” Naesen said. “They would go to prison.”

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has revealed its programme to combat anti-doping and technological fraud that it will implement for the upcoming Tour de France (July 1-23, 2023).

The anti-doping programme deployed at the French Grand Tour will be led by the International Testing Agency (ITA) , the body to which the UCI delegated anti-doping operational activities in 2021. After helping to ensure a level playing field for all participants at the Giro d’Italia in May, the ITA will once again work with all stakeholders at the Tour.

This will be the third time that the ITA has taken charge of the anti-doping programme at the Tour de France since the UCI delegated its anti-doping activities to the agency. Within this framework, the ITA is in charge of the overall anti-doping strategy, which includes the definition of a targeted testing plan.

‘This plan is applied on the basis of a risk assessment that takes into account a wide variety of relevant factors whilst constantly adapting to current circumstances or new information. The testing plan also considers any relevant information received through the monitoring of the athletes’ Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) or gathered by the ITA’s Intelligence & Investigations Department.’

All doping controls at the Tour de France will be targeted and performed at any time throughout the three-week race, not only at the finish line. At every stage, the yellow jersey and stage winner will be tested.

Additionally, all athletes will already be tested before the start of the event as part of their medical monitoring. At the end of the race, the ITA will make a selection of samples that will be kept for potential re-analysis over the next 10 years.

2023 has seen a significant increase in funding for cycling’s anti-doping programme. The UCI, UCI WorldTeams, UCI ProTeams, UCI WorldTour organisers and men’s professional road cyclists decided to further strengthen the capacity of the ITA with a 35% budget increase up until the end of 2024.

This funding principally reinforces the areas of intelligence & investigations, testing, scientific analysis, data analysis, long-term sample storage and sample re-analysis.

The Director General of the ITA, Benjamin Cohen, said “We are looking forward to delivering the anti-doping programme for this major cycling race for the third time under the responsibility of the ITA and in collaboration with our partners to ensure a level playing field during the event.

“As the testing operations for this event are already at a vigorous level, the additional resources stemming from the decision of the cycling stakeholders to further protect the sport from doping will allow us to step up in other relevant areas of the clean sport programme for the Tour de France and throughout the year.

“Most notably, it allows us to invest more in intelligence and investigations, an area that has proven to be very effective and complementary to the testing regime. We are steadfast in our commitment to ensure a clean and fair competition environment for all participants in this highly anticipated event.”

When it comes to the fight against technological fraud at the Tour de France, controls for the presence of any possible propulsion systems hidden in tubes and other bike components will be carried out with the use of three tools: magnetic tablets, mobile X-Ray cabinet and portable devices using backscatter and transmission technologies.

Before each of the 21 stages, a UCI Technical Commissaire will be at the team buses to check all bikes being ridden at the start of that day’s stage. These pre-stage checks will be carried out using magnetic tablets.

After each stage, checks will be carried out on bikes ridden by:

• The stage winner
• Riders wearing a leader’s jersey (yellow, green, polka dot, white)
• Three to four randomly-selected riders
• Riders who give rise to suspicion, for example following a pre-stage scan, an abnormally high number of bike changes (in which case the bikes on the team car can also be checked) or other incidents picked up by the UCI Video Commissaire

These post-stage checks will be carried out using either mobile X-Ray technology or devices that use backscatter and transmission technologies. If necessary, the bike in question will be dismantled.

Once the riders have crossed the finish line, the bikes subject to post-stage checks will be quickly tagged, enabling control procedures to be carried out in a matter of minutes. The introduction of RFID tagging (tamper-proof tags using radio frequency identification technology) for all bicycles as part of the UCI Road Equipment Registration Procedure for the 2023 Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes strengthens the UCI’s ability to monitor the use of bicycles throughout the stages.

The mobile X-Ray technology, which is safe for users and riders, provides a high resolution X-Ray image of a complete bike in five minutes. Meanwhile the backscatter and transmission technology provides instantaneous high resolution images of the interior of the sections examined, which can be transmitted, remotely, directly to UCI Commissaires.

For road cycling, the UCI carries out bike checks at all UCI WorldTour events, as well as the UCI Road World Championships, UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships, UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup, UCI Women’s WorldTour events and the Olympic Games.

Controls are also carried out at UCI World Championships for mountain bike, cyclo-cross and track as well as the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup.

At last year’s Tour de France, a total of 934 bike checks were carried out and UCI noted that no cases of technological fraud were detected.

UCI Director General Amina Lanaya said “The UCI continues to take the possibility of technological fraud very seriously.

“Our range of tools to combat all forms of cheating using a motor enables us to carry out rapid and effective checks. With the introduction of RFID tags on all the bikes, the UCI has the ability to monitor the use of the bikes during the race. This is essential to guarantee the fairness of cycling competitions and to protect the integrity of the sport and its athletes.”

Radsport: Festina-Skandal erschüttert Tour

Willy Voet läutete den Skandal am 8. Juli ein. Der Belgier war Masseur beim Festina-Team, das in Richard Virenque einen der Favoriten auf den Gesamtsieg stellte. Voet saß am Steuer eines Festina-Fahrzeugs mit offizieller Tour-Beschriftung, als er wenige Tage vor dem Grand Depart an der belgisch-französischen Grenze auf einer Nebenstraße bei Neuville in eine Zollkontrolle geriet.

Voets brisante Fracht: Unter anderem 400 Ampullen Epo sowie Anabolika. Voet wird festgenommen. Die Nachricht machte im Feld die Runde, ein Gefühl von Hektik breitete sich aus. Gerüchte kursierten. Die Omerta, das Gebot des Schweigens, jedoch blieb intakt.

Abstreiten, leugnen, zum Gegenangriff ausholen: Die Mechanismen griffen. In Dublin, wo die Tour 1998 startete, reagierte Festina-Teamchef Bruno Roussel auf die Nachricht der Festnahme Voets gereizt. Er distanzierte sich, natürlich. Dass der Doping-Express auf dem Weg zur Kanalfähre nach Calais und damit Richtung Irland war, ließ sich später aber nicht mehr bestreiten. Die Lage eskalierte.

Festina-Firmenchef Miguel Rodriguez schaltete einen Anwalt ein. Das Team müsse sich „auf seine eigentlichen Aufgaben konzentrieren“ können. Doch die Lawine war nicht mehr zu stoppen. Beim Verhör in Lille sagte Voet am 14. Juli aus, auf Anweisung von Festina-Offiziellen gehandelt zu haben - und das nicht zum ersten Mal.

Für Radprofi Virenque, Berg-König der Tour 1997, war auf dem Rad Angriff stets die beste Verteidigung - und auch nun ging er in die Offensive und drohte mit einer Klage wegen Diffamierung.

Kurz darauf verließ der Franzose, der anders als seine Teamkollegen - unter ihnen der Schweizer Alex Zülle - Doping leugnete, das Rennen unter Tränen. Tour-Chef Jean-Marie Leblanc hatte Festina nach einem Geständnis des Teamchefs von der Rundfahrt ausgeschlossen. Virenque gestand erst drei Jahre später vor Gericht.

Es folgten endlose Vernehmungen der Festina-Fahrer und weitere Geständnisse, aber auch die Verwicklung weiterer Teams in die Affäre. Das niederländische TVM-Team geriet zuerst ins Visier der Dopingfahnder. Deren rigorose Verhörmethoden sorgen für Empörung im Feld, die Fahrer traten in den Streik und rissen sich die Startnummern ab. Der Sieg auf der 17. Etappe wird symbolisch TVM gewidmet.

Verheerende Folgen - und dann noch Lance Armstrong

Die Tour stand mehrfach vor dem Abbruch und endete im Chaos: Von 189 gestarteten Radprofis wurden nach dem Rückzug diverser Teams ganze 96 in Paris klassiert.

Der Festina-Skandal verdeutlichte nicht nur, wie sehr er von Doping durchseucht war, sondern auch, wie wertlos das damalige Kontrollsystem und der Verweis darauf war: Keiner der Fahrer war positiv getestet worden. Schlüsselfigur Voet veröffentlichte später ein Enthüllungsbuch, indem er erklärte, dass seine aufgeflogene Dopingpraxis eine 30 Jahre lange Vorgeschichte hatte.

Die Folgen der Enthüllungen für den Radsport waren verheerend: Den Doping-Schatten wurde er jahrelang nicht los, für ihn standen schließlich auch Ullrich und der 2004 unter rätselhaften Umständen verstorbene Sieger Pantani , der ein Jahr später wegen erhöhter Hämatokritwerte selbst unter Verdacht geriet und vom Giro d‘Italia ausgeschlossen wurde.

Und im Jahr 1999, als alles besser werden sollte, begann die Doping-Ära des Lance Armstrong.

1997 Tour de France winner believes he deserves to keep his victory

Jan Ullrich has finally fully confessed to doping, including before he won the 1997 Tour de France, revealing how he opted for the lowest risk when choosing a blood doping programme with the infamous Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes. 

“Yes, I doped,” Ullrich said to Stern and other German media after a pre-release screening of the four-part documentary 'Der Gejagte' ('The Hunted'), which will be released on Amazon Prime in Germany from November 28.  

Ullrich's victory in the 1997 Tour de France made him the poster boy for a boom in German cycling and he remains the only German to ever have won the sport's biggest race. 

He became Lance Armstrong's biggest rival in the sport after the Texan returned to racing following treatment for testicular cancer, but he never managed to beat Armstrong or win the Tour again, finishing second in 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2003.

Ullrich’s career ended abruptly when he was pulled from the 2006 Tour before the start in Strasbourg after serious accusations of blood doping emerged.

Jan Ullrich opens up about doping before documentary about his traumatic life and career

Ullrich confessed to working with Dr. Fuentes back in 2013 and has more recently indicated he doped and tried to justify why. 

Now he has openly confessed to doping just before the release of the documentary, which comes after the two years of filming and research. The process was part of Ullrich's period of introspection after a mental and physical breakdown in 2018, fuelled by whisky and cocaine, almost killed him.

The documentary will initially be available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland but the production company behind it is negotiating with other territories. 

During the filming of the documentary, Ullrich visited Marco Pantani’s home town of Cesenatico and met his parents, learning of the tragedy of Pantani’s death after several years of cocaine use and mental illness. Pantani’s mother attended the pre-release showing of the documentary in Munich on Wednesday, along with Ivan Basso and Ullrich's former directeurs sportifs at Team Telekom, Rudy Pevenage and Olaf Ludwig.

“It was a huge shock for me at the time,” Ullrich said of Pantani's death in a long interview with Armstrong published in Germany newspaper Zeit .  

Armstrong  travelled to Europe to help Ullrich when he was at his lowest in 2018 and the two fierce rivals are now good friends.

“His mum was incredibly touched when I stood in front of her, there is a real connection. Even if it sounds trite: in a way we are like one big family,” Ullrich said of Pantani. 

Early this week Ullrich explained that he refused to confess to doping despite the growing evidence because he didn’t want to “drag a lot of people down with me into the abyss.” 

Looking fatigued after making a complete confession to different German media on Wednesday evening, Ullrich now regrets not confessing sooner. 

"If I had told my story, I would have had many wonderful years. But I didn't have the courage. Now it feels good to admit my guilt," he told the dpa news agency and other German media.     

"Almost everyone took performance-enhancing substances back then. I didn't take anything that the others didn't take. For me, cheating starts when I gain an advantage. That wasn't the case. I wanted to ensure equal opportunities.

“I was guilty and now I feel guilty. I can say with all my heart that I did not want to deceive anyone. I didn't want to get ahead of the other riders.

"It was just a different time then. Cycling had a system and I ended up in that. For me it was important to start the races with equal opportunities."

Ullrich won the amateur world title at just 19 in Oslo in 1993, when future rival Armstrong won the professional men’s road race at just 21. 

Ullrich now reveals he started doping soon afterwards, when he turned professional with T-Mobile.  

“I came into contact with it in 1995/1996, before the Tour de France . At the time it was explained to me in a plausible way. I was not afraid. It was so obvious to me at the time,” he admitted.

“I was young and naive and came into an existing system. And that was made so palatable and indispensable to me that I decided to do it. My career would have been over if I hadn’t done it. I never felt like a criminal."

Lance Armstrong’s seven Tour de France were officially removed from the record book after he was banned for doping by USADA but Ullrich’s former teammate Bjarne Riis is still officially the 1996 winner after his doping confession. 

Ullirich believes he deserves to still be considered a Tour de France winner, despite now confessing to doping even before his 1997 victory.   

“I know what I have achieved. Personally, I think I deserve the title. Others have to decide that. But in my heart I am a Tour de France winner,” he said .

When a blood haematocrit threshold and then an anti-doping test for EPO were introduced, Ullrich, like some of his biggest, most daring rivals, switched to blood doping. 

"I wanted to win and build on my successes. I had a new team at the time and Dr. Fuentes was recommended to me - that's how I ended up there," he revealed, unafraid of the medical consequences, yet also concerned about taking too many risks. 

“Everything was medically controlled. Ultimately, it was my own blood that I had taken, something natural and under medical supervision, I wasn't afraid. 

“Fuentes asked me: Which traffic light do you want to go through? The green, the yellow or the red? It was immediately clear to me - these are the risk levels. I said: always green. I don’t even want to know what the other levels are.”

The Ullrich documentary will be released on November 28, and the German will turn 50 on December 2. He has slowly rebuilt his life since his problems in 2018, with cycling and his children playing a major role in his return to health and stability. 

His confession to doping is a final step toward full personal redemption.   

“I am healthy, I have both feet back in life and have found my centre,” he said. “Life has become easier.” 

Ullrich’s children have started cycling and racing themselves, apparently with some of the talent of their father. He hopes to even find a role in the sport, if is forgiven for his doping, especially in Germany, where a black and white stance to cheating, and especially to doping in cycling, still runs strong.    

"If I had the opportunity, I would take the chance because I'm a master in this field and I still feel good," Ullrich said. "I simply love this sport and it will shape me throughout my life."

Grand Départ 2023 Pays Basque

To start from the basque country.

• Bilbao , the most populous city in the Basque Country,  will host the start of the 110 th  Tour de France on Saturday 1 July 2023.
• The peloton of the  Grande Boucle  already converged in Spain for the 1992  Grand Départ , which was also held in the Basque Country, specifically in San Sebastián. In addition to the Pyrenean stages that pass through the country now and then, nine Spanish towns and cities have hosted a Tour stage start or finish.  Bilbao will join the club in 2023 as the show gets on the road with a loop stage. The second stage will also take place entirely within the borders of the Basque Country.

This loop within the borders of Biscay takes the peloton on a roller-coaster ride on the primeval hills that mound the sea, with a double passage through Guernica, a place of remembrance. Boasting an elevation gain of 3,300 metres, this beast of a stage guarantees that the yellow jersey will go to one of the hard men. A succession of climbs will serve as an appetiser before the Pike Bidea, a 2 km climb packing an average gradient of 9%, with sections of up to 15%, coming 10 km before the finish, on the heights above Bilbao. The riders would do well to save some energy for the finish, where the stage will be decided at the top of a 5% ramp. 

STAGE 2 |  VITORIA-GASTEIZ > SAN SEBASTIÁN | 2 JULY 2023 | 210 km 

Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of Álava and seat of the Basque institutions, will get the ball rolling on a plateau at 600 masl. The overall profile is that of a stage that rolls down towards the sea, but looks can be deceiving. After their legs have been softened up by the rugged, merciless terrain, the riders will get to grips with the Jaizkibel climb, near the Gipuzkoa capital, in the opposite direction from the Clásica de San Sebastián, which is every bit as tough than the side that often decides the outcome of the one-day race. Expect attacks to come thick and fast!  

STAGE 3 |  AMOREBIETA-ETXANO >  BAYONNE |  3 JULY 2023

The race is going home the long way round. The sprinters could get their first chance… as long as they can navigate such a dicey course. Pedalling their way through Biscaye, the riders will reach the sea in the jaw-dropping port town of Lekeitio. From there, 80 km of coastal roads peppered with little difficulties will be a feast for their eyes and an ordeal for their legs. After bidding farewell to San Sebastián, it will be time to head towards Irun and…

Die einen sprechen von "potenzieller Vertuschung", die anderen von Verleumdung: Der Fall der chinesischen Schwimmer hat einen schwelenden Konflikt in der Anti-Doping-Szene angefacht. Tendenz: Flächenbrand.

Travis Tygart, sagen Wegbegleiter, sei schon immer wetteifernd gewesen, unerschrocken im Angesicht eines Konflikts. Zugleich habe er sich nie von einem sperrigen Ego treiben lassen, sondern von einem Sinn für Gerechtigkeit, den sein Vater, ein Anwalt, ihm einflößte. Diese Haltung kam Tygart zupass, als er selbst Karriere machte als Anwalt eines sauberen Spitzensports. Der 53-Jährige hat einmal erzählt, wie ihn vor Jahren - Tygart war bereits Geschäftsführer der amerikanischen Anti- Doping -Agentur (Usada) - Lance Armstrongs Rechtsbeistand anrief. Der siebenmalige Tour-de-France-Sieger werde Tygart verklagen, der gerade dabei war, Armstrong zu enttarnen (letztlich erfolgreich). Den Anruf, so Tygart, habe er im Auto abgewickelt, während er seine Tochter zum Fußballtraining fuhr. Aber das sei nun mal Teil des Jobs.

Es gibt einige in der Anti-Doping-Szene, die bescheinigen Tygart ein taktisches Verhältnis zur Eskalation - in manche Fälle verbeiße er sich mit Übereifer, in andere weniger. Seine Erfolge sprechen jedenfalls für ihn. Unbestritten ist auch, dass Tygart seit Tagen wieder in Form ist wie zu Armstrongs Tagen. Nur dass diesmal die globale Aufsichtsinstanz im Kampf gegen den Pharmabetrug das Ziel ist, die Welt-Anti-Doping-Agentur ( Wada ). Was wiederum wohl nur möglich ist, weil hinter der aktuellen Debatte um positiv getestete Schwimmer aus China offenkundig eine größere Debatte tobt.

23 chinesische Schwimmer haben ein Herzmedikament wegen einer kontaminierten Hotelküche eingenommen, angeblich unabsichtlich - die Welt-Anti-Doping-Agentur gerät beim Versuch, diese Version zu stützen, arg ins Schlingern.

Der Konflikt zwischen Wada und Usada lässt sich mindestens bis ins Jahr 2020 verfolgen. Damals drohte die US-Regierung, ihren Beitrag zum jährlichen Budget der Wada, rund 2,7 Millionen US-Dollar, einzufrieren. Sie verwies auf Defizite in der Art, wie die Wada ihre Geschäfte führte; tadelte, dass die USA als einer der potentesten und treuesten Finanziers der Wada nicht würdig in Leitungsgremien vertreten seien. Witold Banka, ein einstiger polnischer Leichtathlet und Politiker, der gerade Wada-Präsident geworden war, konterte unverblümt: Wenn die Amerikaner den Anti-Doping-Kampf stärken wollen, sollten sie in ihren eigenen Kommerzligen anfangen, im Basketball, Eishockey, Football, Baseball sowie im College-Sport, deren Dopingtests bestenfalls lückenhaft seien. Auch den Rodschenkow-Act empfindet die Wada bis heute als Stachel: Das Gesetz ermöglicht US-Strafverfolgern, Doper und Hintermänner weltweit zu verfolgen . Das Gesetz, sagte Banka, gefährde die Rolle der Wada als globale Anti-Doping-Instanz.

Die USA gaben ihren Beitrag zur Wada dann doch frei - für das Budget 2024 sind sogar 3,6 Millionen Dollar veranschlagt, der größte Beitrag aller Regierungen. Der Machtkampf loderte aber offenbar weiter. Als die Wada zu Jahresbeginn der spanischen Agentur Celad "signifikante Konsequenzen" androhte, weil diese Positivfälle "nicht in zeitiger Weise behandelt" habe, konterte der Celad-Chef Jose Luis Terreros: Der Wada-Präsident sei wohl bloß beleidigt, weil die spanische Agentur zuvor mit "rund zwanzig anderen nationalen Agenturen" Bankas Amtsführung kritisiert habe. Unter den zwanzig Behörden war dem Vernehmen nach auch die Usada (die Wada ließ eine Anfrage dazu unbeantwortet).

Verschleppte Positivtests? Verstöße gegen die Anti-Doping-Richtlinien? Zurückdatierte Ausnahmegenehmigungen? Spaniens so erfolgreicher Sport produziert erneut ein frappierendes Sittengemälde.

Als die ARD-Dopingredaktion und die New York Times zuletzt den Fall der chinesischen Schwimmer publizierten, waren Tygart und die Usada jedenfalls zur Stelle. Die Wada habe die Erklärung eines autoritären Systems, das 23 Positivfälle seiner Schwimmer Monate nach dem Vorfall auf eine kontaminierte Hotelküche zurückführte, nie ernsthaft hinterfragt. Mindestens hätten die Schwimmer provisorisch suspendiert werden müssen ( eine Auffassung, die die deutsche Nada teilt ). Das rieche nach "potenzieller Vertuschung". Für eine Szene, die sonst mit Akronymen wie AAF, WADC und drittinstanzlichen Berufungen um sich wirft, war das etwa so, als würden zwei Schachspieler das Brett zu Seite werfen und mit Fäusten aufeinander losgehen.

Die Wada reagierte nicht minder scharf: Tygarts Vorwürfe seien "unerhört", "haltlos", "verleumderisch". Die Wada habe alle Vorgänge rigoros untersucht, wegen der Covid-Pandemie die Funde aus der Ferne überprüfen müssen. Als die Wada am Donnerstagabend mürrisch verkündete, man werde die Sache von einem "unabhängigen" Anwalt nochmals durchleuchten lassen, dem ehemaligen Schweizer Staatsanwalt Eric Cottier, feuerte die Usada prompt zurück: Dass die Wada sich einen angeblich unabhängigen Advokaten "aus ihrem eigenen Hinterhof" aussuche, zeige, wie reformbedürftig das System sei. Cottier war über 40 Jahre in Waadt aktiv, im Kanton des Hauptorts Lausanne, der Herzkammer des organisierten olympischen Sports, der von Schweizer Behörden traditionell wenig Widerstand zu erwarten hat (die Wada beantwortete auch eine Anfrage hierzu nicht).

Unlauterer Einfluss Chinas in der Wada? Das weisen beide Seiten zurück

Zugleich fällt auf, wie mehrere Anti-Doping-Agenturen, darunter die Australier und Briten, zuletzt ähnliche Bedenken absetzten - und die Wada wiederum dafür kritisiert wurde, wie sehr Chinas Einfluss in der Agentur zuletzt gewachsen sei. Die Nachrichtenagentur AP berichtete unlängst, Yang Yang, seit 2019 Vizepräsidentin der Wada, habe ihren Posten womöglich auch erhalten, weil Chinas Regierung ihre Gaben an die Wada zuletzt signifikant erhöhte . Yang Yang wies das scharf zurück, wie Olivier Niggli, der Generalsekretär der Wada. Seine Agentur erhalte Geld von vielen Regierungen, China liege im vorderen Mittelfeld . Man behandele alle Nationen gleich, auch China, siehe den Fall von Sun Yang. Da die Attacken der Amerikaner unbegründet seien, seien sie folglich "politisch" motiviert, sagte Wada-Präsident Banka.

Noch ist unabsehbar, wie weit die Flammen greifen, die der Konflikt entfacht hat. Die Londoner Times berichtete jetzt, dass mehrere Schwimmer, die 2021 bei Olympia gegen die kurz zuvor positiv getesteten Chinesen antraten, eine "beispiellose Millionenklage gegen die Wada" erwägen . Travis Tygart, dem wiederum die Wada eine Klage angedroht hat, sagte unlängst, er würde das Geld anstelle der Wada lieber in ernsthafte Ermittlungen investieren. Eine Klage würde er zugleich "begrüßen", weil "dann die Wahrheit ans Licht kommt". Ein Kollege habe ihm einst gesagt: "Wenn du nicht mindestens Klagedrohungen erhältst, machst du deinen Job nicht richtig."

Tour de France Femmes bliver uden verdensmester

Den belgiske cykelstjerne Lotte Kopecky dropper Touren til fordel for OL.

Sidste år sluttede belgiske Lotte Kopecky på podiet i Tour de France Femmes, nummer to efter holdkammeraten Demi Vollering.

Men i år kommer de regnbuefarvede VM-striber ikke til at pryde Tour-feltet, der endda kører igennem Lotte Kopeckys hjemland, Belgien.

Dagen inden Tour de France begynder, skal Kopecky nemlig i aktion på banen ved OL i Paris i disciplinen ominum.

Ifølge cykelstjernens sportsdirektør, Danny Stam, er det derfor "umuligt" for verdensmesteren at deltage i det franske etapeløb.

- Omnium slutter søndag eftermiddag, og Touren begynder mandag morgen. Det er næsten umuligt at gøre det ordentligt. Det vil også være en svær opgave rent mentalt at gøre begge dele, siger Danny Stam til Sporza ifølge Cycling Weekly .

Lotte Kopecky, der har vundet seks VM-guldmedaljer i banecykling, luftede allerede sin tvivl om Tour-deltagelsen tilbage i oktober, da sommerens Tour de France-rute blev præsenteret i Paris.

- Det er ikke en mulighed at droppe omninum til OL, så vi må se, om det er muligt at kombinere de to ting, sagde Kopecky dengang til DR Sporten.

Nu står det altså klart, at en af verdens bedste cykelryttere ikke stiller op til det prestigefyldte cykelløb.

Kalenderen er eksploderet

Trine Schmidt, der selv er tidligere bane- og landevejscykelrytter, mener, at placeringen af Tour de France er uheldig for Lotte Kopecky, men i en presset kalender er det svært at gøre alle tilfredse.

- Der er OL hvert fjerde år, og indenfor de sidste fire-fem år er kvindernes World Tour-kalender eksploderet med cykelløb, der gør, at man fra år til år er nødt til at revurdere hele cykelkalenderen for kvinder, siger Trine Schmidt til DR Sporten.

Tour de France for kvinder har kun eksisteret i sin nuværende etapeløbsform siden 2022, og de forrige udgaver har ligget i forlængelse af mændenes.

Den placering har ifølge Trine Schmidt været en "kæmpe succes", og derfor frygter hun, at opmærksomheden bliver mindre, når kvinderne skal køre Tour de France i midten af august.

- Jeg kan være bange for, at den her Tour-feber, vi har set de sidste par år, dør lidt ud, fordi den ligger efter OL.

- Men det må tiden vise, og forhåbentlig får vi en stor dansk sportssommer, som gør, at interessen for kvindernes Tour de France forbliver intakt, siger Trine Schmidt.

Tour de France Femmes køres fra 12. til 18. august, mens discilpinerne i banecykling ved OL køres fra 5. til 11. august.
