Farewell Tour Tracker: 14 Artists Now Saying Goodbye

All good things must come to an end, including the touring careers of beloved rock artists.

Deciding to come off the road isn't an easy one. As performing artists, being onstage in front of fans is an integral part of the profession. Without an audience, where else can that immediate connection occur? Even now, as some artists enter their 70s and even 80s, touring isn't necessarily off the table.

But touring can also be exhausting, expensive and time-consuming, and for some, 2023 will mark the end of the road. After decades of performing, farewell tours are in order. Even though it should be noted that in many cases, artists have specified that they are not retiring from live performing altogether or from music in general, just the large-scale touring they've been doing for years.

For several in the below list of Farewell Tour Tracker: 14 Artists Now Saying Goodbye, this isn't the end but the start of a different chapter. "Well, it looks like that's it for this outfit,"  Bob Weir  wrote on social media following the news that Dead & Company would be coming off the road. "But don't worry, we will all be out there in one form or another until we drop."

For others, like Elton John and Kiss , this year will bring the end of farewell tours that have been going on for years. (Let's not forget the pandemic that put a halt to some of these.) Whether it's really goodbye this time remains to be seen.

Foreigner Announces Farewell Tour Starting In 2023: Exclusive

"It's a very difficult decision to come to," founder Mick Jones tells Billboard.

Foreigner

Forty-five years after it felt like the first time for Foreigner, the veteran rock troupe is planning to tour for the very last time.

The Rock Hall of Fame 2022 Induction Ceremony: 10 Best Moments

The band, formed during 1976 by British guitarist Mick Jones, will launch its Historic Farewell Tour next July 6 in Alpharetta, Ga., with 32 U.S dates running through Sept. 3 in Holmdel, N.J. Loverboy will be opening. More legs, both domestic and overseas, are on tap through the end of 2024.

“Foreigner is a completely revitalized band with a whole new energy that has won the hearts of our fans all over the world, and I want to go out while the band is still at the top of its game,” Jones, 77, tells Billboard . “I had the idea that was to become Foreigner back in 1974, and I was 30 years old at the time. By the end of our farewell tour, over 50 years will have passed, and that’s a long time to be on the road.”

Trending on Billboard

“We’re at an era in life where a lot of bands from the ’70s are right on the ragged edge of still being able to do shows. I see other musicians sometimes that I go, ‘Wow, that was disappointing,’ and I don’t want to be someone that other people say that about. I want to do this band the way it’s supposed to be, and when it’s not like that I don’t want to be doing it.”

Since its formation, Foreigner has released nine studio albums — five of them multi-platinum, plus the 1982 hits set Records — and sold more than 50 million records worldwide. It’s also notched nine top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including rock radio staples such as “Feels Like the First Time,” “Hot Blooded,” “Double Vision,” “Urgent” and the chart-topping power ballad “I Want to Know What Love Is.” More than two dozen members have been part of the roster over the years, and members of the first two lineups made a series of guest appearances with the current lineup during 2017 and 2018.

Foreigner has a number of concerts scheduled this month and also in the spring, prior to the farewell tour launch — including March and April residencies at the Venetian in Las Vegas. Hansen adds that while Foreigner is calling a halt to touring it may not go away entirely. “I’m sure there might be the odd or occasional things we do,” the frontman says. “You can never say never about things. But for me this (tour) is it. It’s not like one of these, like we’ve seen, ploys to get people out to shows.”

Both Hansen and Jeff Pilson, Foreigner’s bassist since 2004, say that Foreigner – whose last studio album, Can’t Slow Down , came out in 2009 — may release some new music in the near future, too. “There’s a whole bunch of stuff in different stages of completion, so that’s not outside the realm of possibility,” Hansen predicts. Pilson says that Jones has been writing material with Marti Frederiksen that he expects the band to work on at some point.

“There’s probably four I’m aware of that are close, and some other snippets,” Pilson says. “Chances are there won’t be a whole new (album). I can see some new songs being added to some kind of a package or some kind of a single. I definitely see some new material coming, hopefully within the next year. We don’t need new material, but it’s always nice to have.”

Aerosmith announces new farewell concert tour dates after Steven Tyler's injury forced postponement

B OSTON - Aerosmith's farewell tour is back on. The iconic rock band from Boston announced it will continue its "Peace Out" tour this year, months after a vocal cord injury to lead singer Steven Tyler forced several concerts to be postponed.

New and rescheduled Aerosmith tour dates

The announcement includes some new concert dates in addition to a long list of rescheduled shows stretching into 2025.

The band will return to the stage to play their greatest hits on Sept. 20 in Pittsburgh for a newly added show at PPG Paints Arena with special guest Teddy Swims, and then play Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center on Sept. 23.

Aerosmith says a highlight of the tour will be a "special hometown show" on New Year's Eve at Boston's TD Garden. The band was supposed to ring in 2024 at the Garden before Tyler's injury.

Some of the rescheduled stops on tour include Dallas (Nov. 9), Denver (Nov. 18), San Francisco (Nov. 30), Los Angeles (Dec. 7), Detroit (Jan. 4), Chicago (Jan. 19) and New York (Feb. 23). Click here for a full list of dates for the tour, which will also feature special guests The Black Crowes.

Steven Tyler's vocal injury

The announcement from Aerosmith did not include an update on Tyler's health. The "Dream On" singer, who just turned 76 years old, had previously said he suffered vocal cord damage during a performance last September "that led to subsequent bleeding," and a doctor ordered him not to sing for 30 days.

After canceling a handful of shows, the band later postponed its farewell tour to 2024 because Tyler's injury was "more serious than initially thought" and included a fractured larynx.

Tyler posted to social media in late November that his throat was "on the mend." He shared a similar message earlier this year while hosting a Grammys viewing party in February. People magazine reported that he told attendees "My throat's been better, but it is on the mend."

Aerosmith began in Boston in 1970. The five original members - Tyler, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Joey Kramer and Tom Hamilton - lived together in an apartment in Allston . The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

Pete Townshend Now Says There Will Not Be a Who Farewell Tour: ‘I Was Being Sarcastic’

Pete Townshend

It turns out that when Pete Townshend recently told the New York Times that he was planning on a final Who farewell tour, he was “being sarcastic,” he told the “ Sound Up!” podcast in an interview released today (April 16).

“It feels to me like there’s one thing the Who can do, and that’s a final tour where we play every territory in the world and then crawl off to die,” he told the Times in an interview published last month.

Popular on Variety

When asked about that line in relation to his infamous boast — “I hope I die before I get old” — from the Who’s 1965 song “My Generation,” he continued, “That’s a twist, in a sense. ‘Slit Skirts’ was an honest confession of how I didn’t like what I’d become. When I wrote [‘My Generation’], I was celebrating the fact that I was young — I was 18 and surrounded by old people. Now, everybody seems younger. But in those days, everybody seemed older and they all seemed to be messed up, either miserable or poor or working too hard or complaining about something. The song was about, ‘I’m never gonna be like you if I’m old,’ and I don’t think I am like them. I’m happy and I’m struggling still, and I think I’m operating for the greater good — touch wood!” (Hear the full 50-minute interview here .)

However, even his comment to the Times showed a distaste for touring as the Who. Immediately after his statement to the paper above, he said, “I don’t get much of a buzz from performing with the Who. If I’m really honest, I’ve been touring for the money. My idea of an ‘ordinary lifestyle’ is pretty elevated.” As always, time will tell.

“Sound Up!” is hosted by former MTV VJ Mark Goodman and top music journalist Alan Light (both formerly of SiriusXM’s “Debatable”), is produced by Roger Coletti and distributed by Revolver Podcasts.
