A How-to Guide: Fly in Style to the World’s Top Polo Events

Home » A How-to Guide: Fly in Style to the World’s Top Polo Events

Ever wanted to rub shoulders with royalty? Here’s how.

Polo is more than just a sport – it represents entry into the world of luxury travel, elite hospitality and unmatched VIP experiences. If this sounds like something you want to be a part of, you’re in luck. Consider this article the keys to the kingdom, guiding you through everything you need to know to fully immerse yourself in the world’s most spectacular spectator sport.

Once you’ve read up on what makes polo special and how to be a part of it, there’s a good chance you’ll be ready to take part in one of these luxury experiences. If that’s the case, you need to make sure that your international travel solutions are in-line with the splendour that’s expected of polo matches – it is the sport of kings, after all.

You need VIP travel solutions that match the luxury of the event you’re attending. You need comfort and convenience to make the whole trip as smooth as the immaculately churned butter on the post-match sandwiches. You need speed and efficiency that guarantees you’re there for every second of polite pre-game conversation. In short: you need Skyllence .

Before you organise your private jet charter and take to the skies, let’s make sure you’re fully abreast of what makes this regal pastime so special by delving into the world of this luxury sport.

What is polo?

In straightforward terms, the sport of polo is a game played on horseback that involves hitting a ball with sticks and scoring goals. Though it’s come to be associated with luxury and can at times seem a little esoteric, the game itself is one of the world’s oldest sports, dating back to at least the 6th century BC.

The exact geographic origins of things this old are always hard to pin down, but the modern consensus suggests that polo can trace its beginnings to somewhere in central Asia, and there are hints of this in modern languages – such as Tibetan and Balti, where the word polo is translated as ball .

Polo’s history brings serious pedigree, and throughout this span the sport has been the domain of the upper echelons of society – not least because the horses involved in it require extensive specialist training. Seeing the majesty of these animals and the skill of their riders has meant that polo has always been one of the most attractive equestrian sports for spectators, and in the modern era this has seen it eclipse all other luxury sports.

What are the rules of polo?

Polo teams are composed of four players each and the four horses on which they compete. Each match consists of four chukkas – a piece of polo terminology much like a quarter in basketball – consisting of seven minutes, for a total of 28 minutes of playing time per match.

Matches are played on a pitch measuring 300 x 200 yards, with a goal at each end that is 8 yards across. The objective of each team is to knock the ball into their opponent’s goal and score using a mallet – the most iconic piece of polo equipment – with teams changing ends after each successful effort. This continues until the end of the match, at which point the team with the most goals wins (usually involving a lot of champagne and celebration). In the event of a draw, play continues until a winner is crowned – no boring 0-0 stalemates here!

Minutiae aside, the basics of polo rules make for a high-octane, all-action affair that can see dangerous clashes, incredible skill from the riders, and unmatched athleticism from the horses (called polo ponies, another example from the long list of polo terminology). High-goal polo is common, and polo culture means that you’re always guaranteed to see a winner due to the fact that draws cannot occur – another factor that makes it such a special spectator sport.

Who plays polo?

Polo teams and polo players are a broad spectrum, and different polo events attract different kinds of competitors. Take the British Open, Argentina Open, or Cartier Queen’s Cup, for example. These elite and longstanding events feature new competitors every year, but victory is usually secured by established favourites. In the case of the Argentina Open, La Dolfina – an Argentinian team based in Buenos Aires – have won 14 of the last 18 events.

Newer events like the Dubai Gold Cup signify the entry into the sport of different countries, and the large investments that are being made to boost the polo scene in their regions. These events often see local teams take part alongside established international competitors, but make no mistake: in recent years, teams from the UAE and Thailand have seen considerable success, and their status as mainstays in the sport’s elite is all but secured.

What’s involved in attending a polo event?

Imagine you’re set on going to the US Open Polo Championship. What can you expect the elite polo clubs that host these tournaments to offer to spectators and guests? In a word: luxury. Consider the fact that polo events are often attended by VIPs and HNWIs from around the world, from royalty to billionaires. It follows that the kind of event planning that takes place has to be legendary in scale, and must cater to the exquisite tastes and lifestyle trends of those who take part.

This means that the food, drink and entertainment available trumps that of any other spectator sport, but it’s not just what the event can offer you that makes polo special. To misquote JFK, ask not what a polo match can do for you, but what you can do for a polo match – and nowhere is this truer than when it comes to polo fashion.

Attendees looking for the travel and leisure experience of a lifetime head to polo events to make a splash with elegant, unique or striking outfits that will impress. This isn’t the met gala, but it’s safe to say that dressing up for the occasion goes hand-in-hand with watching polo, and seeing what your fellow attendees have brought to the table is a secondary spectator sport in itself!

How do I get to a polo match?

Spending thousands on a bespoke suit and brushing shoulders with royalty can hardly be bookended with an economy seat on a budget airline. If you’re looking for a mode of travel that matches the elegance and luxury of a polo event, then private aviation has to be your choice. Polo travel largely corresponds to the nature of the events themselves, with luxury, style and panache the order of the day. This makes private jets the ideal way to arrive, but there are also practical considerations that weigh into this choice.

Let’s say you’ve earmarked the Pacific Coast Open as your first foray into the world of polo. If you’re at all serious about making new friends in the scene, want to feel that you’re part of polo culture, or simply have practical, logistical considerations around making sure that you can bank on arriving early, then jet charter services are the perfect solution. Providers like Skyllence ensure that you won’t miss a second of the action with their teams of logistics experts, leaving you free to focus on spending your time exactly as you wish.

Wild horses

If you’re determined to attend a polo match this year, there’s no reason to delay. Contacting Skyllence now and organising a chartered private jet direct to one of these illustrious gatherings makes certain your arrival. Not only that, but you’re also guaranteed a level of comfort, convenience and luxury befitting an event of this stature, making private jet charter the perfect way of experiencing the sport of kings.

“Bringing our dedication to luxury to bear is part-and-parcel of what we offer to every client as standard” says Vilma Vaitiekunaite, CEO of Skyllence. “When it comes to polo, though, the bar is clearly raised. We know that passengers heading to a polo event do so with the expectation of regal luxury, and the challenge of meeting this drives us to constantly improve our service. This dedication to a truly red-carpet experience – paired with our expertise in logistics and planning – is what makes us unique in the market, and allows us to state with certainty that we’re the ideal partner for events of this kind.”

Here’s How the 2024 Solar Eclipse Will Impact Air Travel

Meghna Maharishi and Elizabeth Casolo, Skift

April 4th, 2024 at 8:51 AM EDT

The solar eclipse will have a minimal impact on air travel, but airlines are operating a slew of flights that will give flyers a special view of the once-in-a-lifetime event.

Leading up to April 8, cities in the eclipse’s path of totality prepare for an influx of tourists. But, even with some extra traffic for airports and airlines, operations likely won’t look too different.

Skift named April’s eclipse “this year’s top travel phenomenon,” with cities such as Buffalo, Indianapolis, and Dallas gearing up for the big day. Some airlines offered specialized experiences for eclipse travel, and tourism bureaus coordinated events to celebrate the evening.

With these plans in place, those flying in may wonder about what to expect in the air.

Will There Be Any Travel Disruptions?

It’s possible. The Federal Aviation Administration warned of potentially higher traffic at airports in the eclipse’s path.

“Traffic should anticipate delays during peak traffic periods,” the FAA said in a statement .

Some airports did not express concern about incoming travelers but still plan to take precautions. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority operates the Niagara Falls International Airport and Buffalo Niagara International Airport, two airports on the eclipse path. NFTA Aviation Deputy Director Russell Stark said air traffic control is preparing for more traffic, but the airport itself has not observed more traffic than usual.

“We have not seen any increase in the traveling public coming via airplane,” Stark said. He expressed concern about the roadways beyond the airport and does not have enough information to know if air traffic from other airports would impact arrivals or departures.

A spokesperson from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport also did not have clarity on the airport traffic, but “the airport’s rental car partners… expect to have the busiest days on record for car rentals around the time of the eclipse.”

Other than the special eclipse flights run by certain airlines, Indianapolis International Airport does not foresee a big change in operations. The airport estimates the highest traffic period will be April 9, as people leave the morning after the eclipse.

“Nearly 20% of our traffic on Tuesday, April 9, will be departing by 7 a.m.” said Megan Carrico, director of public affairs for the Indianapolis Airport Authority.

So, while there may be more air traffic congestion in the hours after the eclipse, expect busier roads in cities along the eclipse’s path, as well.

What Are Airports Doing to Prepare for the Eclipse?

The FAA advised airports to minimize procedures that could take attention away from potential traffic. The agency said pilot training operations at airports may either be “extremely limited” or “possibly prohibited” during the eclipse.

“The bottom line is it’s ‘operations normal’ around here with a few minor changes on our part,” Stark said. Stark emphasized that contractors working on projects around the airport need to prioritize eclipse safety, something that’s been incorporated into their daily briefings. NFTA employees also have access to eclipse glasses in case they work outside during that time.

Carrico said Indianapolis International Airport will apply its experience handling traffic from major sporting events during the eclipse. The airport also partnered with art students and Visit Indy to make decorative posters commemorating the event.

Is It Safe to Fly in the Middle of a Solar Eclipse?

Yes. Whenever a plane is in the path of a solar eclipse, the sky will look dark for a few minutes. A solar eclipse doesn’t interfere with an airline’s operations — it’s almost no different than flying in the night, said Dr. Frederic Bertley, the CEO of the Center of Science and Industry, a museum in Columbus, Ohio.

“It shouldn’t impact how the aircraft itself will fly in terms of solar radiation or flares or darkening of the skies,” Bertley said.

A solar eclipse wouldn’t impact a pilot’s ability to fly an aircraft, either.

“It’s really from an aircraft and a pilot’s viewpoint,” Bertley said. “It’s just a matter of light versus less light. That’s all it is.”

The Air Line Pilots Association said pilots could expect to see skies as dark as night if they are flying in the path of totality. Otherwise, travelers on flights further away from the path may see a dusky sky.

Can I Experience the Eclipse From a Plane?

Yes. While many may purchase solar eclipse sunglasses to view the event from the ground up, witnessing it on a plane can also have its benefits.

The main advantage of viewing an eclipse from a plane is that it’s above cloud cover, which could offer the clearest view. Bertley said around 40% to 60% of the country that’s in the path of totality will most likely have some cloud cover.

And while someone on the ground might see an eclipse for a mere two to three minutes, a passenger on a plane in the path of totality could possibly view the eclipse for as long as six-and-a-half minutes.

This is because a plane flies at around 500 miles per hour while the eclipse moves at 1,000 miles per hour, which essentially gives passengers the ability to see 50% more of the eclipse, Bertley said.

However, for passengers on flights that are in the path of the eclipse, where you sit on the plane to view the eclipse matters. For example, if a traveler is on a flight leaving from Texas that goes along the path of totality from west to east, that traveler would need to sit on the right side of the plane to view the eclipse. Passengers sitting on the left side in this instance won’t see the eclipse. According to a spokesperson at Delta Air Lines, though, the airline is working with the FAA to approve S-turns on its special path-of-totality flights, ensuring both sides of the plane can view the eclipse.

American Airlines also said it was working with the FAA to ensure smooth operations and was anticipating increased air traffic at locations in or near the path of totality.

Delta offered a special flight from Austin to Detroit that covers the path of totality. After this flight sold out in under 24 hours, Delta started offering a flight from Dallas Fort Worth to Detroit . United Airlines is offering a slew of flights from Chicago and Houston that will allow travelers to catch a glimpse of the event. And Southwest Airlines has flights departing from Dallas Love Field, Austin, and St. Louis in the eclipse’s path.

Is It Safe to Fly During a Solar Eclipse?

A head of the solar eclipse passing through the U.S. on April 8, many people may be wondering if it is safe to take a flight during the event. TIME headed straight to the experts for an answer, which was resoundingly positive.

“Yes, absolutely. There's no reason not to [fly],” Paul Bryans, a project scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, tells TIME. A solar eclipse happens when the moon blocks the light from the sun. In terms of being on board an aircraft, this doesn’t make the sun any more of a threat than it is on regular days. “There's nothing dangerous about a solar eclipse,” says John Gianforte, director of the observatory at the University of New Hampshire, during a video call.

Nevertheless, eclipses are often accompanied by safety warnings from concerned scientists and authorities warning the public about the importance of wearing eye protection. The phenomenon of eclipse blindness has been documented throughout modern history. After an eclipse in 1976 in Turkey, 58 patients sought medical treatment for eclipse-related eye damage. While most made a full recovery, some reportedly had permanent vision loss . Similarly, in 1999 after a solar eclipse passed through parts of Europe, 45 patients attended the eye casualty of a hospital in Leicester , England, after viewing the event.

Read More : Helpful Tips for Planning Your Solar Eclipse Trip

All this has led many people to believe that eclipses are inherently dangerous phenomena, but this is not true. The only reason we see more eye injuries on solar eclipse days is because people are intrigued and are purposefully looking at the sun. “The fact that there is an eclipse doesn't make it any more dangerous to look at the sun, but it makes people want to look at the sun,” Gianforte points out. “If you look at the sun on any given day, without eye protection, you're going to damage your eyes.”

As such, you can rest assured that flying during an eclipse is safe. In fact, Delta airlines is offering a flight specifically for people who want to view the eclipse in-air.

The plane will have extra large windows to enhance the viewing experience. It is set to depart from Austin, Texas, at 12:15 p.m. CT and land in Detroit at 4:20 p.m. ET to give passengers the best chance possible of viewing totality.

What is it like to fly during an eclipse?

The biggest advantage that comes from flying during a solar eclipse is that you may be able to stay in the path of totality for a longer period of time, since the plane can try to follow the sun’s path. This can be especially useful to scientists trying to conduct experiments that can only be done above ground, says Bryans.

More From TIME

“Instead of getting, like, four minutes of totality on the ground, you can get something like seven or eight minutes from the plane. So that helps a little bit and some of the people that I spoke to said that it was really good for science reasons,” he tells TIME.

Being in the air can also guarantee that you will, at some point, be above the clouds and might be able to avoid having bad weather interrupt your viewing experience.

Read more: What happens if it’s cloudy during an eclipse?

However, viewing an eclipse from a plane may not be the optimal experience for a more casual observer. Planes will have to alternate between turning right or left in order to get the best angles for viewing the sun. Additionally, a big part of viewing an eclipse is observing how the surroundings on the ground may change. For example, animals including cats and dogs may react differently when an eclipse takes place. Those viewing an eclipse from a plane may miss out on this experience. “It’s not the same personal experience that you would get on the ground,” Bryans says.

Southwest Wanna Get Away sale 2024: Where you can fly for $39 from Phoenix

fly polo travel

Southwest Airlines passengers can pay a little less for their summer vacation flights this year, if they book sooner rather than later.

On Tuesday, April 2, Southwest launched its nationwide Wanna Get Away sale. The airline's spring fare sale offers one-way flights as low as $39.

Travelers flying out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport can fly to and from four cities at the lowest one-way fare, including two Southern California destinations.

Flyers will have to book now to get the best fares, as the sale is limited and ends soon. Here's how to shop Southwest Airlines' Wanna Get Away sale.

Guy Fieri, empanadas: All the new restaurants at Sky Harbor Airport in 2024

Where does Southwest fly for $39 each way from Phoenix?

The promotional $39 fare is available for flights to and from four cities out of Phoenix:

  • Albuquerque, New Mexico.
  • El Paso, Texas.
  • Long Beach, California.
  • Ontario, California.

The Arizona Republic found the low fares available for these cities on weekdays from late April to early June, and August to mid-November. The lowest fare we spotted for travel on weekends was $49.

If booking a departing and returning flight at $39 each, these itineraries can be booked as low as $78.

Unlike ultra-low-cost carriers that usually offer the lowest base fares for travel to and from Phoenix , Southwest passengers don't have to pay extra to bring a carry-on bag and/or up to two checked bags. But passengers should be aware that their flights have an open seating policy and where they sit will depend on their boarding position.

What does the fine print say about the deal?

Trips must be booked by 11:59 p.m. Arizona time on April 11. The promotion is valid for U.S. travel from April 23 to June 5 and Aug. 6 to Nov. 20.

Seats and days are limited. Fares vary based on the itinerary and the day of the week, and are not available during busy travel times and holiday periods. Changes to the itinerary after booking may lead to a fare increase.

Starting April 9: Southwest Airlines adds new nonstop flight from Phoenix. Here's where you can go

Best things to do and see in Moscow

Things to do and places of interest in moscow.

Moscow is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful cities in the world, and well worth seeing. From the stunning, onion-domed St. Basil’s Cathedral to the sleek modern structures in the city’s new business district, you’d be hard-pressed to find another place with so many contrasting skylines. Here are a few of the sights and activities worth adding to your itinerary, when you travel to Moscow.

  • Stroll around Red Square, the heart and soul of Russia. One of the most historically significant sites in the world, Moscow’s cobbled central square is surrounded by other must-see sights, including the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, Lenin’s Mausoleum, and more.
  • You could spend days exploring the Kremlin, the biggest medieval fortress in Russia, which also happens to be the largest active fortress in all of Europe. Within its 2,235-meter-long walls, there are 5 squares and 18 buildings, 20 towers, and the world’s largest bell and cannon.
  • Pick up some souvenirs at GUM. The glass-roofed mall is home to over 200 upscale shops, several great eateries, a Soviet-style grocery store – Gastronom №1 – and the swankiest historic toilet you’ll ever see.
  • Every world-class city has a significant park, and Moscow’s is Gorky Park. Originally opened in 1928, in 2011 Gorky Park underwent a major design upgrade and now has a renewed, vibrant look. The park sees around 20,000 visitors every day.
  • Take a Moscow Metro Tour and visit the 12 stations listed as cultural heritage sites. The Metro opened in 1935 and was one of the USSR’s most extravagant architectural projects. Most of the central stations look like museums, with their own ambiance, embellishments, and story.
  • Take in a ballet or opera performance at the historic Bolshoi Theatre. This structure is a landmark of Moscow and Russia, and is depicted on the Russian 100-rouble banknote.

Tips and tricks for visiting Moscow

Avoid the people who approach you offering taxi services immediately after getting through customs. Even though they may be wearing uniforms that say, “official airport taxi”, they are usually illegal taxi services. These taxis can cost much more than the official taxis because they don’t have set prices.

DON’T order vodka with orange juice or tonic! You might be breaking an obscure Russian law, or at the very least, you risk being considered uncivilized by the Russian bartender. Vodka may be chased with lemon or a pickle, and must be drunk swiftly, not sipped.

Marco Polo Airport:

After landing at the VCE Marco Polo Airport in Venice, the first decision you will have to make is whether to reach Venice overland or by water .

That decision should take into consideration where you need to go next, as overland transportation cannot go further than Piazzale Roma.

In other words, if a hotel is on the opposite side of Piazzale Roma (the only place in Venice reachable by car), reaching it by water is the only option that would make sense. On the contrary, if the hotel is relatively close to Piazzale Roma, going overland could be a quick and affordable choice.

I’ll Never Fly Without This Travel Sling Bag That’s Perfect for an Easy Check-in Process

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

I’m a minimalist who loves organization, whether that’s using packing cubes to get the best use of luggage space or carrying small yet spacious bags while traveling that can hold all of my essentials and provide easy access to them. That’s especially true when I’m flying with my family of five and juggling carry-ons, personal items, in-flight snacks, and more.

To help make my air travel and everyday on-the-go activities a little easier, I was able to test Adidas’ Essentials Sling Crossbody Bag , and it’s safe to say I’m officially obsessed. I love traveling with a crossbody bag because it feels secure, and this sling style feels comfortable on my back versus a longer style banging against my hip. And unlike other belt and crossbody bags, it’s surprisingly spacious and ultra-lightweight.

Adidas’ Essentials Sling Crossbody Bag

Inside the bag , I can easily fit my wallet, keys, a water bottle, and a book with room to spare. But my favorite feature is a simple yet genius detail: a separate zip phone compartment that perfectly fits my iPhone. The phone case sits on the adjustable strap that rests on your chest, so it’s extremely easy to access at a moment’s notice. This is super helpful when flying, as I always store my tickets in the airline’s app or my phone wallet. Now, instead of digging through a seemingly bottomless backpack or tote to find my phone, I can quickly unzip the pocket and scan my tickets to get through security and on the plane. Plus, the bag’s adjustable strap that’s connected to the phone is padded, which makes the phone case protected and comfortable.

The bag has a variety of other pockets to help me stay organized while I’m traveling, too. In the front, there is a small zip pocket for stashing other items you want to access quickly, like lip balm, your passport, and IDs, and it has a small hook for attaching keys. The main compartment has its own small mesh zip pocket for storing personal items. Plus, right beneath the bag is a spring snap hook for attaching a small water bottle or other items. Both the inside and outside of the bag are made with a wipeable material in case of any spills or stains.

Adidas Essentials Sling Crossbody Bag

Shoppers praised the sling bag ’s benefits, too, with a high number of reviewers giving it a five-star rating. One customer called it a “great bag for travel” since “it’s super lightweight and has ample storage.” Another reviewer agreed that it’s “little but mighty” with “a lot of compartments” that allow you to “fit a lot.” In fact, it’s the “perfect companion,” according to one person who noted that it’s “small yet roomy.” They shared that it’s “perfect for traveling” because it’s “secure to keep important documents and money” and “good for people that do not want to carry a lot of weight” on their backs.

I love the bag so much that it’s earned a permanent spot at the front of my handbag collection, and I just may grab it in other available colors, including black, fig, and beige, along with the on-sale rose gold shade. Shop it below with more Adidas travel bag styles .

Park Place Team Claims First U.S. Open Polo Championship Title

fly polo travel

Held over two days due to a rain postponement, the finale of the U.S. Open Polo Championship featured a clash between Park Place (Andrey Borodin, Juan Britos, Hilario Ulloa and Jason Wates) and Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, Mariano “Peke” Gonzalez, Adolfo Cambiaso, Agustin Nero and Rufino Merlos) battling for American polo’s most coveted title.

Gathering under stormy skies on Sunday, April 23 at the National Polo Center-Wellington, a sold-out stadium at U.S. Polo Assn. Field One celebrated the apex of the high-goal season. Unfortunately, what started as a light drizzle quickly turned to a deluge, forcing the suspension of play at the end the first half.

Resuming action on Monday, April 24 on the Isla Carroll East field, a riveting and high-scoring contest ultimately came down to the power and athleticism of the two 10-goalers, with Ulloa placing a meticulous hook on Cambiaso at the goal line in the final seconds of play to protect Park Place’s lead and deliver the team’s first U.S. Open Polo Championship title 12-11, along with $100,000 in prize money.

Undefeated in bracket play, Park Place and Valiente faced two different paths leading up to the final match. Falling to Pilot in the semifinals of the previous tournament, the USPA Gold Cup, Park Place advanced to the U.S. Open final after an 11-8 semifinal victory over MAG. Park Place has consistently maintained contender status.

“We lost in the final of the U.S. Open two years ago, and we lost in the final of the USPA Gold Cup last year,” Britos said. “We’re always there fighting in the semifinals and finals and close to winning, but we were killing to win one of the big ones.”

Led offensively by 10-goaler Ulloa with three U.S. Open titles to his name (2010, 2014 and 2018), Park Place’s sharpshooting captain took to the field ranked third in scoring with 84 goals in the Gauntlet series, trailing only Facundo Pieres and Francisco Elizalde.

Valiente made a triumphant return to the high-goal season for the first time since capturing their second U.S. Open title in 2017. Making their Gauntlet debut, Valiente kicked off the 22-goal season securing the C.V. Whitney Cup 10-9 over Pilot. Blazing their way into the U.S. Open semifinals rematch versus Pilot, an unfortunate injury sustained by Lucas Criado Jr. at the end of the second chukker sidelined him for the remainder of the season, with Nero and Merlos entering as substitutes. Despite a commanding five-goal performance from Facundo Pieres, Valiente ultimately stood tall in the face of adversity to claim the 11-9 victory.

Feeding the ball to Ulloa early and often resulted in back-to-back goals for Park Place to open the final match. Largely reliant on Criado Jr. throughout the season to make the majority of Valiente’s penalty goals, Cambiaso took the lead and struck from distance on a successful Penalty 4. Dampening Park Place’s offense on the field, Valiente managed to hold Ulloa to just two conversions, as a three-goal effort from the field tied the match 4-4. Outscoring Park Place for a second consecutive chukker, a drive from Cambiaso followed by Gonzalez’s first penalty conversion lifted Valiente to a 6-5 lead at the half.

Faced with a storm growing in ferocity drenching the field, the game was officially postponed due to weather conditions, halting both teams in their tracks overnight.

Utilizing the time to their advantage, Park Place began to strategize and adjust to Valiente’s new roster.

“Today, thankfully, we knew who we were playing against, so last night we were having a team meeting and really put a strong plan together. The biggest takeaway from the meeting was attitude,” Wates said. “No matter what we do, we do with attitude and confidence. I think that got us the win today.”

With the sidelines packed with eager fans, the green light was finally given for a 1:15 p.m. start.

Determined to declare a victor despite the weather, both Ulloa and Cambiaso drove to the goal in the fifth, as Cambiaso racked up his third to give Valiente a 10-8 lead.

Finding openings on the field, Park Place evened the score once more in the sixth, but a determined Cambiaso took command in the final minutes of play to boost Valiente back on top. Answering for Park Place, Ulloa hit back-to-back goals to slingshot Park Place ahead with a narrow 12-11 advantage.

Left with just seconds on the clock, Cambiaso broke free from multiple defenders, sprinting to the goal, but the horsepower and precision of Ulloa allowed him to make the game-saving hook, as Britos finished the play on a brilliant backshot. Working in tandem to shut down one of the great polo talents of the era, Park Place survived Cambiaso’s final push in the remaining seconds to claim the U.S. Open Polo Championship, 12-11.

Leading Park Place with a spectacular 10-goal performance, the only Park Place player to get on the final scoreboard, Ulloa was named Most Valuable Player.

Receiving a $1,500 travel credit courtesy of Fly Polo, Ulloa playfully joked that he would use his MVP award to change his airline ticket due to the postponement. Reflecting on the good luck bad weather had given him in previous victories, Ulloa said, “I won three U.S Opens in the rain. With Crab Orchard it rained, with Daily Racing Form it rained and this one.”

Britos credited the Park Place organization for its tireless dedication. “It has been a lot of years with Andrey leading this whole operation with horses, the team, grooms, vets and trainers,” he said. “It’s a lot of people who have been fighting for this title, and after all these years it finally came. We’re very happy for Andrey and the whole team.”

The Willis Hartman U.S. Open Polo Championship Best Playing Pony and Best Argentine Bred were presented to Ulloa’s Latia Kavaska. A standout in the competition, Latia Kavaska was also the recipient of two other U.S. Open Polo Championship Best Playing Pony awards, the first in Game 12 against Aspen and the other in Park Place’s quarterfinal victory against La Elina.

A U.S. citizen, having spent more than half of his career in the states, Jamaican-born Wates honed his passion from a young age at the Kingston Polo Club. He had support from a large contingent of supporters, many of whom made the journey from the island and also Colorado to watch in person.

“The energy on the sidelines both days here in the rain, everyone still showed up,” he said. “People were supposed to leave this morning and changed flights to be here an extra day.”

Earning his U.S. Open title in his Gauntlet debut, Wates reflected on the process of becoming a champion.

“A lifetime of work has gone into getting me here, and winning the U.S. Open is the biggest thing you can win,” he said. “It makes all that work and time worth it. This season, the entirety of it, has meant so much, being a part of a great organization. Andrey has put together a great group of people, so being a part of that group for this whole season has been a pleasure.”

Borodin capped off the season riding the ultimate high. “It was a tough journey for several years to achieve this, and it means a lot,” he said. “Everyone gave everything they could, and the result is this.”

Marco Polo's odyssey spawned one of the world's first best sellers

Medieval audiences couldn’t get enough of Polo’s fascinating accounts of faraway lands, turning his book into a runaway success.

Marco Polo carrying his book the Travels of Marco Polo

The world-famous explorer Marco Polo is credited with many things, but perhaps the greatest is compiling one of the world’s first best-selling travelogues. Published around 1300, the book chronicles his experiences during a 24-year odyssey from Venice to Asia and back again.

Polo did not write down his adventures himself. Shortly after his return to Venice in 1295, Polo was imprisoned by the Genoese, enemies of the Venetians, when he met a fellow prisoner, a writer from Pisa named Rusticiano. Polo told his stories to his new friend, who wrote them down and published them in a medieval language known as Franco-Italian. (See also: Photo Gallery: The adventures of Marco Polo .)

Although the original manuscript is lost, more than 100 illuminated copies have survived from the Middle Ages. Many of these are of great beauty, but there are significant discrepancies among them. The work came to be known as Il Milione, perhaps based on a well-known nickname of Polo’s. In the English-speaking world, the book is often known as the Travels of Marco Polo.

The Bodleian Library in Oxford, England, holds one of the earliest versions, dating from about 1400. Gorgeously rendered, the Bodleian copy contains what many scholars consider to be an authoritative text. It tells the story, beginning in 1271, of an odyssey undertaken by a trio of Venetians, who traveled through extraordinary lands and into places where few Christians had ever been, all the way to the court of the Mongolian emperor, Kublai Khan. (See also: Who were the Mongols? )

The names of the places they traveled—Hormuz, Balkh, and Kashgar—became for Europeans indelible parts of a new mental map of the world. Although fantastic legends and rumors from such far-off places had filtered through to Europe on the numerous east-west trading routes of the Silk Road, Polo’s eye brought them alive in a new way. He wrote of fabulous things, but also of everyday matters relating to commerce. (See also: Silk for horses: History of the Silk Road .)

His book became a best seller, spreading throughout the Italian Peninsula in a matter of months—a remarkable feat in an age before Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press around 1439. Polo’s book reawakened Europe to the possibilities of international trade and expansion, and became a text that heavily influenced the age of discovery that dawned in Europe two centuries later.

Mongolian rule

Marco Polo was born in 1254, at a time when Europe was looking not westward to the Atlantic, but eastward with fascination and trepidation. By this time, Mongol hordes had reached Hungary. By the time of the Polos’ great journey 17 years later, the Mongol empire had reached its maximum. Its northwest component, the Khanate of the Golden Horde, stretched as far west as the Danube River in central Europe. The easternmost part of the empire stretched to Asian shores of the Pacific.

The largest contiguous land empire the world had ever known emerged from a group of warring tribes. In 1206 a single leader, Temüjin, was elected Genghis Khan (meaning “Universal Ruler”) after he won a series of victories over his rivals. Temüjin enjoyed unprecedented control over what is now Mongolia . With the accession of this fearsome leader, the federation of tribes began expanding their strongholds beyond the Mongolian steppe.

They first turned east, to the kingdoms of north and western China, eventually reaching Beijing, which fell to them in 1215. From then on, state after state across China and Central Asia was absorbed into the expanding Mongol empire. The Mongols even raided lands in southern Russia. (See also: Do walls work? The Great Wall of China .)

At the time of Genghis’s death in 1227, Mongol horsemen patrolled the shores of both the Caspian and China seas; they were in Siberia, Tibet, and the central Chinese plains. They were also present along the Silk Road, a great artery of trade, commerce, and information.

From 1236, the Mongols began to look farther west and turned their attention to Europe. In a series of shatteringly aggressive campaigns, they stormed through what is now Ukraine and Poland, taking Kiev in 1240 and sacking Krakow the following year. A successful invasion of Hungary opened the way for Mongol armies to enter Austria, raiding south of Vienna. Here they were at last turned back.

Word of the speed of Mongolian conquests and the apparent invincibility of their horse- men spread throughout Europe. When Polo set out on his journey, there would still have been many survivors of the Mongol invasions. Even so, fear of Genghis Khan was mixed with curiosity about his people. Some enterprising Europeans even had hunches that money could be made through more contact with the Mongolians.

A family of travelers

a portrait of Kublai Khan

Europe’s great seafaring republic, Venice, maintained a vast network of trading contacts throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East. It was poised to begin expanding its trade network eastward. Venice was home to merchants with an in-depth knowledge of the East and among the best placed to chase riches. Throughout the medieval period, they traveled the routes east to Trebizond, the gateway to the Silk Road (located in today’s Trabzon in modern Turkey). Goods moved between China and Europe along this route.

Marco Polo came from a family of merchants. When he was a small child, his father Niccolò and uncle Maffeo were already amassing some remarkable travel experiences. The shrewd traders had left Venice in 1261 to forge new relationships in the East. The pair had met the Mongolian khan as part of this first epic journey.

One of the Polos’ commercial bases was Constantinople, where their brother, Marco senior, worked. Their agents operated up the Volga River into Bukhara. It was there in modern Uzbekistan that Niccolò and Maffeo had pulled off a major diplomatic feat: They met members of Kublai Khan’s government and arranged an expedition to his court in Shangdu (in Inner Mongolia in modern China).

Trailblazing Friars

the ruins of Karakorum

The Polos were not the first Westerners to penetrate the vast Mongolian domains, nor even to meet the ruling khan of the day. One pioneer was the Franciscan friar Giovanni da Pian del Carpini, who in 1246, on behalf of Pope Innocent IV, arrived at the court of Güyük (the third Great Khan) after a lengthy and arduous trip by land. Equally significant was the experience of Willem van Ruysbroeck, a Flemish friar, who in 1254 made it to Karakorum, the capital of Möngke (the fourth Great Khan), as an emissary of Louis IX, king of France. Unlike Marco Polo’s account, however, the reports of the roving friars did not find a wide public, and did not shape the European imagination to such an extent.

Their meeting with Kublai Khan was one of history’s great encounters between East and West. In the khan, the two Venetians found a man whose curiosity about the West matched theirs about the East. The relationship they built with the Mongols made the brothers pioneering intermediaries, a conduit through which knowledge of Europe and China could travel in both directions.

Intrigued by what the brothers told him about Europe (and especially about Christianity), the khan asked them to return to Europe and petition the pope to send learned men to teach the Mongols about Christianity. The Polos’ return home was long and arduous. Things became more complicated when they reached Acre (in modern Israel) and learned that Pope Clement had died, and there was no elected successor.

The brothers continued back to Venice, where they would await a new pope and plan their return to the court of Kublai Khan. This time, they would bring Niccolò’s son, Marco. A boy when the father had last seen him 10 years ago, he was now a young man at 17 years old.

To the court of Khan

In 1271 father, son, and uncle left Venice and sailed to Acre. From there they swung northeast, taking a route that stretched overland through eastern Anatolia and Armenia to Tabriz, in present-day Azerbaijan. Next they headed south through the Iranian highlands, skirting Baghdad, aiming for the Strait of Hormuz, from where they intended to take a ship across the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean all the way to China.

Inspection of the available boats, however, alarmed them. They were, Polo would later describe in his Travels, “wretched affairs . . . only stitched together with twine made from the husk of the Indian nut.” In the end, they decided to make the journey by land.

Marco Polo was always interested in the goods a region produced, how it connected with Europe, and how it could connect in the future. Tabriz, for example, “is excellently situated so the goods brought to here come from many regions. Latin merchants . . . go there to buy the goods that come from foreign lands.” The Persians, he observes, produce “the best and handsomest carpets in the world.” In Baghdad: “a great river [the Tigris] runs through the midst of it by means of which merchants transport their goods to and from the Sea of India.” These details were important for future trade between Venice and East Asia.

Despite his report on the city, it is unlikely Marco visited Baghdad, as the city had been laid to waste by the Mongols slightly more than a decade before. Neither are historians sure if Marco Polo visited Mosul, although he certainly gathered a lot of information about the city’s textile trade. .

Three and a half years traveling through Central Asia brought hardship to the family. Polo later recalled suffering attacks by bandits and severe illness while passing through Afghanistan. After surviving it all, the Polos eventually made their royal rendezvous. Marco Polo, then age 21, became one of a select few to be received by a khan—in this case, the fifth Great Khan, Kublai—at his summer palace at Shangdu.

By his own account, Marco was popular with Kublai Khan himself, and could speak the khan’s tongue. The Polos spent nearly 17 years in his employ in China and its neighboring lands. Marco was sent on many journeys around China, and farther afield to Pagan in modern-day Burma, and to the old Mongolian capital at Karakorum far to the north.

When the time came to return to Europe, the Polos’ sea voyage home was another epic journey, taking them through the South China Sea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Sumatra, and Sri Lanka. The Polos rounded the southernmost tip of India and sailed north up the western coast until they disembarked and continued overland to Afghanistan. From here, they slogged through Persia and the Middle East, on to Constantinople, from where they finally sailed for Venice. After an odyssey of 24 years, they arrived home in 1295.

Birth of a best seller

Marco Polo’s account of his journey became a best seller partly because of its new insights into a faraway part of the world: Although travelers’ tales from the lands of the Silk Road had been distributed before, the wealth of information Marco Polo provided on China and its surrounding lands was unprecedented in its time.

The Travels became famous, even notorious, for their tall tales. One such story is an account of plants that produced pasta (this latter, however, is almost certainly a misinterpretation; Polo surely knew pasta did not grow on trees!). Nevertheless, the book also spins tales about hungry cannibals and giant unicorns (some believe they were rhinos) who lived on Sumatra. On an island called Angaman (believed to be the Andaman Islands), it describes people with heads like dogs. (See also: Marco Polo and the 'Assassins' of Alamut .)

Even when the stories are not fabulous, their provenance is often hazy. The only source of information for the Polos’ route is Marco’s account, and it is not always easy to distinguish between what the family actually saw with their own eyes and what stories they were told by others. With its mix of hearsay and occasionally disjointed, rambling style, episodes of Polo’s account have been regarded as a fabrication by some commentators. Polo described a place called Cipangu with a palace so richly endowed that its floors were lined with gold “more than two fingers thick.” Most historians agree that Cipangu is Japan but that Polo never went there. Much of this account is believed to be secondhand, at best. Even so, most historians consider that Polo’s account of his travels in China is based on authentic, lived experience.

The work was also attractive to readers because of its commercial emphasis. Not only did it offer readers strange and fantastic details about faraway places, it also presented practical information of use to merchants interested in international trade. Polo describes China as a “merchants’ paradise” and includes down-to-earth data on the intricacies of Chinese law.

Polo’s eagerness to record the goods being produced and how they could be transported, caught the mood of the times. Information from the Travels was useful in improving maps of East Asia, which fed trade relations. Marco Polo’s work also inspired travelers to retrace his steps to China, bringing back yet more information on these lands. This knowledge fueled a growing curiosity about the world as Europe moved into the Renaissance and the age of discovery toward the end of the 1400s. Better navigation enabled eastward as well as westward trade in that feverish period of exploration.

In 1557 the rulers of China’s Ming dynasty allowed Portugal to create a permanent settlement at Macau, and it was from this trading post that the Italian Jesuit priest Matteo Ricci began his attempt to evangelize across China. His profound knowledge of the country enabled him, and fellow Jesuits, to explain Chinese beliefs and customs to the West, continuing the cultural bridge that Marco Polo, his father, and his uncle, had begun building two centuries before.

Venice Marco Polo Airport

Marco Polo Airport in Venice — the third busiest airport in Italy — connects more than 13 million travelers a year to Venice's iconic canals and Byzantine-influenced architecture. It not only links the city with other major European capitals like Frankfurt, Paris, Istanbul, and Amsterdam, it also welcomes daily arrivals from the United Kingdom, as well as long-haul flights from destinations in North America and the Middle East.

A new terminal was inaugurated in 2017, and its contemporary design features a dramatic grid shell roof that allows sunlight to filter down into the halls. The terminal is not only architecturally stunning, but it's also equipped with a state-of-the-art security system too.

In order to make your arrival and departure from Venice stress-free, we've put together a handy guide to Marco Polo Airport with information about how to get around, where to eat and drink, where to shop, and how to get to and from the city's historic center. Know Before You Go

Marco Polo Airport consists of one single terminal on three levels, making it a fairly easy place to navigate. The arrivals area is on the ground floor and departure gates are on the first floor (what Americans would consider the second floor). There are separate departure gates for EU and non-EU flights. Baggage claim and ground transportation can be found on the ground floor, while the second floor houses the VIP lounges and a business center.

At the Airport: Marco Polo Airport has a range of parking lots (short term covered, long term uncovered) that are in close proximity to the airport terminal (between a one-minute and five-minutes' walk. See the Parking Map .

In Venice: Cars are not permitted in Venice. The closest parking lot to the city is at Piazzale Roma. The other alternative is to leave your car on the Tronchetto (a man-made island in the Venetian Lagoon). Although this car park is farther away from the city center, it's conveniently connected to Venice by vaporetto or bus. For an even a cheaper option, you can park your car at Fusina or San Giuliano near mainland Mestre.

Public Transportation

Marco Polo Airport, located about 8 miles (10 kilometers) from Venice, provides a number of ways to get into the city to fit most travelers' budget. Here are the key transport options available:

Bus: The ATVO bus to Piazzale Roma may not be the most exciting way to get into Venice, but it's by far the most affordable. Another wallet-friendly alternative is to catch the ACTV public bus No. 5. Coaches depart approximately every 30 minutes.

Vaporetto (waterbus): Alilaguna operates the water transfer service to Venice, as well as to Murano , and the Lido. A really fun way to travel, boats depart regularly from around 6 am until midnight, seven days a week. The journey takes about an hour, stopping at various landing points, including Piazza San Marco .

Water taxis: Although water taxis take about half the time as a vaporetto, they cost almost ten times as much. Be aware that some pilots are notorious for overcharging, but do expect to pay a surcharge at night. If you want to defray some of the cost, you can ask to share a ride with other passengers.

Land taxis: In Italy, cabs cannot be hailed but must be hired at official taxi stands. You'll find the rank out in front of the arrivals area. The trip into town takes approximately 15 minutes and drops you off at Piazzale Roma.

Airport Services

Standard facilities and services in Marco Polo Airport include a tourist information kiosk, a post office, a currency exchange, rental car and hotel reservation counters, luggage deposit, and a smoking lounge. ATM cash machines (called bancomats in Italy) are scattering around the passenger terminal — most accept international bank cards, however, we recommend you check with your financial institution before departure.

Here are some other amenities and features within Marco Polo Airport's terminal:

Top 5 airlines serving from Marco Polo to the United States

Seats were broken in premium select and so was monitored on my seat and other people around me

Carly the flight attendant was extremely helpful and very accommodating to passengers on the flight from what I noticed. Couldn't be more satisfied with the service and assistance from Delta's flight attendant, Thanks again Carly!!

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

I didn’t like that I could not select my seat and was assigned a seat when I checked in at LAX

Delta did an awful job w logistics at DTW. Missed connection. We were there an hour early. SUCKED

Inflight entertainment stopped working as we taxi to runway and never worked again until landing and taxi to gate. Grrrr

Flight and gate staff were great as usual. Inflight entertainment did not work. Was watching a movie while at gate. Screen went blank once started to taxi to runway and never came back on until landing and taxi to terminal. Grrrr flight attendants were too busy to bother them. All seats around me were working fine that I could see.

Had to run to make it only to have the flight delayed to wait for all the late connectors Second drink service skipped up

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

Too many fees (but that seems to apply to all airlines nowadays)

Packed in like sardines, very uncomfortable. Sitting the aisle my shoulder was rammed into numerous times by rushing flight attendants. Also flight was very cold.

Your app is impossible to use. I couldn't load it. Then i couldn't open it. When i finally got both those things done -with much help -then i couldn't open the app to install a credit card. The upshot was 4 flights without access to food or drink. When i first tried to download united app some company called starlier opened instead and i would up signing up for some 49 dollar a month music service which i still have not been able to cancel.

the plane was old. the wifi didn’t work. the entertainment was boring and dated. the charging ports were impossible to find. i was mostly ignored by flight attendants that had no problem speaking to the man beside me. i got two drinks the entire time i was on the plane.

Delayed a day due to snow storm. Was upgraded. That kind of made up for significant delays from FLL to COS with no compensation or acknowledgement.

It was delayed several hours which delayed our connection in Denver. Not happy.

Quit making seats narrower and narrower. The guy beside me spilled over in to my seat.

Ok, but comfort was lacking as the seats were way to small

I was happy to be seated with my teen daughter. On my arrival flight we were not together. Drink choices were great. Food was ok. Lots of entertainment options. Pilot communicated well and gave us a heads up about wind and turbulence. Made it less anxious.

The service was non existent . Crew did very little didn’t even answer call button . Premium economy in this long haul was the worst I have ever experienced . Never again flying with them .

The flight was excellent, provided that we had inclement weather. We departed earlier than scheduled and arrived early. There was a little turbulence, but nothing to be worried about.

Our flight was great we left Kona earlier and got into LAX almost an 1hour earlier as well. LAX AA is in repair so to get out and found our bus to get pick up was a bit confusing.

Delayed flight, few announcements with information, no comps, cluster f boarding because zones weren’t spread out and announced loud and repeatedly, staff did their job -nothing more nothing less, annoying kids were speaking and kicking the heck out of the back of my seat and parents weren’t willing to parent… so another typical day of air travel in the US.,

The flight crew was really wonderful, incredibly helpful as well as patient. I was able to watch entertainment on my phone but didn't have access to my headphones and I didn't want to bother the flight attendants. The food wasn't an issue for me because I am a vegan and brought my own food on board. The flight left on time and arrived ahead of schedule. It was overall a good flight.

I don’t think the flight attendants are happy. They do not seem to be friendly or welcoming.

Flight was delayed until Next day as crew timed out

We are gluten free, there were not any available complimentary gluten free options.

The flight was smooth, on time and without any issues.

The flight was great until towards the end when the flight attendant read an excessively long commercial for purchasing an american airlines credit card. The worst part is that we are doing a lot of traveling this year so i was actually interested in getting the credit card, but I was so annoyed with the long commercial that I completely dismissed the flight attendant bringing around the information. Next time, keep the sales pitch to 10 seconds and then pass around the brochures!!

I was able to get on standby with relative ease

Seating space was crowded and I am a very small woman.

The crew on this flight were excellent. They were friendly and attentive. It really made the flight more enjoyable.

I sat in the last row of seats. On an 8 hour flight they allowed folks to stand and talk and drink in the back area near the toilets the whole time. They were at times loud and in the way. It was a little annoying. The crew on this trip were pretty mediocre and the plane was littered with trash when we disembarked.

Boarding process needs to be improved. Business class passengers were told to stand in the economy line and vice versa.

I travelled on biz class and f there is no water in the toilette to wash my hands I would expect to have this indicated somehow and not just finding out when I'm there expecting to be able to wash my hands and teeth. Also this is in general that it is always so rushy at the end of these kind of long flights. It is like we are sitting there for 9 hours and the last 1.5 hours just feels like I have time for nothing. Because food comes and at the same time we are close to destination everyone tries to pack their stuff and go to toilette and eat and everything :))) not that like I would know a good solution here I just wanted to raise this :)

Emergency row seat less comfortable than promoted. Restricted by emergency life raft storage.

Better communication to those connecting flights and have a customer care desk at the airports

American was good / British Airways partner was not as good…

The entertainment system in our row was not working. That makes for a VERY long flight!!

A little more legroom, and maybe a little bit of food

Good. But there food was poor quality and 95% of movies didn't have English subtitles

I thought they had rebranded themselves in every aspect but it was quite the opposite. The food was terrible the service was sub-par. Overall it was not a good experience.

Service from staff was poor, food choices were limited. Air plane was not clean or hygienic and seemed like not cleaned for days. Seats were uncomfortable.

service from stAff was barely there , food choices were limited. AirPlane was not clean and seemed like it was not cleaned for days.. Seats were very uncomfortable.

I paid for premium seats and the last minute they changed the aircraft for a bigger one, they bumped me to another seat which was NOT at all comfortable for an 11 hour flight, will fight for a refund!!

The landing was catastrophic. I was very scared. I thought it were my last lminues. Pilotes should be more experienced

ALL services were good. An announcement should’ve been made at the end of the flight that filling out a customs form would not be necessary anymore for USA travelers entering Philadelphia.

The flight was smooth, the premier economy seats were comfortable, the flight crew were excellent. The on board food, however, was AWFUL. I suggest bringing your own food on board.

The flight was smooth, our premier economy seats were comfortable, the flight crew were especially fine - attentive, cheerful. The food, however was AWFUL. I advise bringing your own on board.

The service on board should have been better fast service
