7 Best Food Tours in Seattle Washington – By a Hungry Local

food tours seattle wa

Looking for the best food tours in Seattle?

You’ve come to the right place because I lived in Seattle for 9 years, and still visit the city frequently since I still live in Washington, so I am very familiar with foods that can be found here and the tours that will take you there!

Seattle, Washington is known for its food scene, especially in the coffee and seafood department. But there is so much more to taste than that, like donuts, chocolates, comfort foods, and street foods!

Here are 7 of the best guided food tours to eat your way through the Emerald City.

If you don’t have time to read the whole article, my top food tour pick in Seattle is:

Let a food professional guide your tastebuds through Pike Place Market. I love having an actual chef talk me through the flavors I’m experiencing!

My Top 3 Favorite Stops on a Seattle Food Tour

me with a bread bowl of clam chowder from pike place chowder

There’s so many good restaurants on a Seattle walking food tour that it can be difficult to choose my favorite stops. Plus, not every tour can hit them all.

But, if I had to choose just 3 stops, these would be it:

  • Pike Place Chowder – I’m not the biggest seafood fan, but oh my! Their clam chowder is my par for all other clam chowders. I have not found one I like better!
  • Dahlia Bakery – a Tom Douglas bakery, there is just superb quality in these pastries. I could eat their beignets and jam all day!
  • Rachel’s Ginger Beer – I love all their different flavors of ginger beer and the array of colors they come in. And when some booze is added, I am one happy girl!

Now it’s time for you to find your favorite stops!

Know Before You Go on a Food Tour in Seattle

Seattle food tours are a fun way of sampling all the flavors in the city led by local experts who know the vendors personally and will share their knowledge of Seattle history along the way.

What to Wear on a Seattle Walking Food Tour

These will all be walking food tours, so make sure you can stay on your feet for about a mile or so over a period of 2 hours. Most of it will be flat, but there will probably be a steep hill or two. Wear comfortable shoes!

In the Pacific Northwest, rain is a part of life, so tours will operate in all weathers. But don’t let bad weather dampen your tour experience. Keep an eye on the weather and dress appropriately. I always suggest wearing layers to adapt to changing conditions.

food tour guide prepares you for what you are about to eat on the best food tours seattle

What to expect on a Food Tour in Seattle

You’ll meet your tour guide and small group at a clear, pre-designated address. They are always super knowledgeable professionals who know a great deal on Seattle’s history and secrets. I always recommend asking them to point you in the direction of local recommendations.

Your culinary journey ushers you from one delightful food stop to another. Your guide will reveal the unique qualities that make each sampling extraordinary and assist you in fully savoring and appreciating every bite. Perhaps you’ll even be introduced to the cuisine artists.

At times, you may have to wait outside the shop while your guide gathers your food samples, sparing you from navigating through bustling crowds indoors.

Let your tour operator know prior to the tour if you have any dietary restrictions. Some accommodations can usually be made, especially for vegetarians.

Specific food tour stops are never guaranteed as life happens and substitutions sometimes need to be made. If you don’t hit a particular restaurant you were hoping form, try not to be too disappointed and enjoy the adventure of the unknown!

Because you’ll be sampling so many different foods, you usually end up eating about a light meal’s worth. You’ll undoubtedly feel full and satisfied afterwards.

Best Seattle Food Tours FAQs

Is a seattle food tour worth it.

If you love trying new foods and want to be guided by a professional to sample a variety of eats you wouldn’t necessarily try on your own and also give you some local, insider knowledge on the city, then a Seattle food tour is definitely worth it!

If you are more of a DIY tourist, you could definitely save money by purchasing dishes to split with your party on your own.

Even if you are a Seattlite, like me, I would highly suggest taking a tour to enjoy your own backyard.

What is a foodie tour?

A foodie tour is when a professional guide takes you around an area of a city and works with local businesses to give tour groups a sampling of their dishes. As a bonus you’ll usually learn about the local history as well.

🌲 Washington Travel Planning Guide 🌲

🚨  Should I buy Washington travel insurance?

YES  — I recommend  Travel Insurance Master  because you can compare multiple options with one click. With plans starting at $5/day per person, why not give yourself piece of mind? Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

🚗  Is it safe to rent a car in Washington?

YES  — It’s totally safe to drive in Washington. And unless you are planning to just stay in Seattle, renting a car is pretty much a necessity! Beware of tolls whether crossing bridges or driving in HOV lanes. I recommend Discover Cars as they have some of the best prices around.

📞  Will my phone work in Washington?

YES  — All major cell providers work in Washington. However, be prepared for some dead spots in the more remote parts like in the middle of the cascades.

🛏️  What’s the best way to book my Washington accommodations?

For Washington hotels,  Booking.com  is amazing because you can often reserve your room with no money down. If you are looking at Airbnbs for a more home-like stay, don’t forget to check  VRBO  for potentially better prices and options.

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Washington flights?

I recommend looking at  Skyscanner  for finding cheap flights.  Pro Tip : check if flying into Everett is cheaper than flying into Seattle.

🛂  Do I need a passport to visit Washington?

NO  — If you are a US citizen, you do not need a passport as Washington is part of the United States. If you are from out of the country, the same passport and visa requirements are the same as entering anywhere in the United States from your country.

🧳 What should I pack to Washington?

Layers! Layers! Layers! Weather can get finnicky, so prepare for both rain and sunny warm days. Wear comfortable walking shoes that can go from city strolls to mountain hiking.

What you get in this Seattle walking food tour

After you purchase this guide, you’ll be able to download a mobile-friendly PDF with all of the following:

  • A self-guided itinerary for visiting my 8 favorite local restaurants and bars
  • A map to help you get a sense of where everything is
  • 14 extra “honorable mention” restaurants to help you customize your tour
  • Recommendations of what to order and how to avoid crowds
  • Interviews with my favorite restaurants
  • Drool-worthy food photos to help you know what to expect
  • Ideas for non-eating activities to do between eats
  • Tips for how to get to Ballard and the best time to visit
  • A look inside Ballard’s historic past and how it became the vibrant neighborhood it is today

You can expect to cover about 1.5 miles over the course of about 5 hours on this Seattle walking food tour. Note that a few of the recommendations are only open for dinner , but there are plenty of alternate suggestions to swap in depending on when you’re available to do the tour.

The benefits of a self-guided food tour

  • You can avoid shuffling around a neighborhood in a large group.
  • It offers the flexibility to go at your own pace or customize the adventure.
  • It’s more affordable.
  • You pay the restaurants directly (there’s no middle man to take a “cut”).
  • You don’t have to make small talk with strangers.
  • It reveals the  best  places, not just the ones that will accommodate larger groups.

About Ballard

All the guide books will tell you to visit downtown Seattle. But insiders know the best way to experience Seattle is through its surrounding neighborhoods.

Ballard is the #1 neighborhood I tell both visitors and locals to go. It has the city’s best farmer’s market, an incredible craft beer scene, and is home to my favorite restaurants in Seattle. It also has an adorable downtown area that makes it perfect for walking, eating, popping into shops, and then eating again.

It’s home to James Beard-winning chefs, restaurants that brought Seattle its first cupcake and food truck, and craft cocktail bars regularly on “best bars in America” lists. Whether you’re a family with little ones in tow or a hip young adult looking to experience Seattle like a local, there’s something for everyone in Ballard.

About your guide

owner of Emerald Palate eating poke

The Fremont and Ballard neighborhoods have been my home for more than a decade, which means I know where to find the best eats. And since I care deeply about small businesses, I decided to create self-guided walking tours to connect you with my favorites.

I considered hosting in-person Seattle walking tours, but I discovered some things about the industry that made me uncomfortable.

First, there’s an issue with some food tour companies trying to get discounts from restaurants with promises of “exposure”. Second, tours tend to cater to large groups. As a result, some businesses aren’t willing to work with food tours.

To better align with my values of supporting small businesses and authentically sharing the best of the best, I decided to offer self-guided walking tours of Seattle instead. I hope you love them as much as I do, and take pride knowing you are supporting small businesses directly.

Tons! The benefit of a self-guided tour is you can customize the itinerary to eat as much or as little food as you want. This tour has 8 stops and assumes at least 4 hungry adults attend. However, I’ve taken it with one other person and got through it all by splitting everything and taking some leftovers home.

You’ll also get 13 honorable mentions so you can try even more places if you’re in a large group. Since this is self-guided, you’ll get full-sized portions when you order. So start hungry!

Oh yes! I include one bar on the itinerary and most of the restaurant serve alcoholic drinks.

It is! However, I’d recommend skipping the one bar on the itinerary and swapping it with one of the honorable mentions instead. Also note some of the restaurants are fancier and don't have kids menus.

This tour is good for all physical abilities! It’s about 1.5 miles on flat ground with a lot of stops for resting.

While the recommended dishes on this tour do not take into account any specific dietary restrictions, you’ll find a mix of meat, vegetarian, and gluten free options. And the best part is you can order whatever you want at these restaurants because this is a self-guided walking tour! I’d say vegans will have the hardest time finding dishes at the recommended restaurants.

If you order all the recommended dishes on this walking tour, you’ll spend about $200 not including gratuity. If you’re taking this with just one other person, that’s about $100 pp and I’d be really impressed if you can finish eating everything!

Since this is self-guided, you can mix and match your itinerary to fit any budget. Most dishes recommended are under $15, with a few pricier options at the nicer restaurants.

There are a few I recommend that you do, yes. I note which ones in the guide so you can plan ahead! However, most stops don’t need reservations.

Absolutely not. I believe strongly that the best food tours include stops that a local would tell their best friends to visit. That means they shouldn’t be recommended places that give them kickbacks!

Yes! Since this is self-guided, you can bring your furry friend along. Some restaurants will allow them inside, but for those that won’t, there are plenty of places to tie them up outside.

Unfortunately no. Hopefully you’ll find this jam packed with enough recommendations and insider tips that you’ll think it’s worth the nominal fee that compensates me for my time putting it together!

I’d really appreciate if you didn’t. It took me more than 80 hours to put this guide together and the small fee I charge compensates me for that effort. Just as I’m trying to help small businesses grow by featuring them in this guide, I hope you’ll help me grow by not sharing this with others unless you buy it as a gift.

I'm not hosting tours at this time, but I host in-person overnight small group tours to foodie destinations around Washington from time to time. Join me on those for a food trip you’ll never forget!

Absolutely! I offer personal travel planning services for more than just food tours, but am happy to hone in on a food crawl if you'd like.

I bought this tour guide as a birthday gift for a friend who always wants to go to new places, but has a hard time deciding where to go. He was so excited to have a suggested direction to wander and has referenced it several times over to inspire him to go to Ballard for dinner.

As someone that loves going out in Ballard, I was able to discover several new gems that I had missed in places that I been to before and discovered new places to go to. I’d highly recommend you check out this guide if you are new to Seattle or even a Seattle foodie.
