While we haven't formally tested luggage straps, pros in the Good Housekeeping Institute ’s Textiles Lab recently tested over 80 luggage brands. We know what materials and features make suitcases — and their accessories — reliable and durable. Our top pick is made by Samsonite, a well-respected brand that has continuously proven to manufacture highly durable and easy-to-use travel gear — and snagged the best overall distinction in our luggage tests. These picks have been selected by independent editor research and based on noteworthy reviews.
In our recent tests of luggage brands, Samsonite earned top honors not only for its wide assortment of styles, but also for its ease of use and durability. Though we haven't tested the brand's luggage straps, we are consistently impressed by its travel products and can vouch for the overall quality . Reviews of this luggage strap confirm users have similar experiences with the brand overall, as well as this product in particular.
The luggage strap, which comes in four colors including an easy-to-spot orange and purple, is made of a heavy-duty polypropylene that can fit bags up to 72 inches around. (Note: Some users say it's difficult to adjust the length.) The Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) buckle — a highly durable material that can withstand high temperatures and rough handling — looks equally wear-resistant, but still appears to open and close without unnecessary struggle.
If you're looking for a quick way to identify your bag, this bright green set of straps from Untethered will do the trick. But it's not all about the visibility aspect. Although these luggage straps offer great overall value, they look just as rugged as others.
Each strap is claimed to be made out of a durable synthetic material that can contain up to 400 pounds, although th e exact material isn't listed, and some reviewers say it's on the thinner side. The straps also have stainless steel buckles. Because four come per set, you can also cross these straps on your luggage, providing even more security for the contents inside.
For those who don't mind paying up for a product that looks a little more elevated, Cincha offers a more decorative luggage strap that performs just as well as other more utilitarian options. Choose from 16 fun shades and patterns, plus six additional seasonal options, to suit your personal style or complement your luggage .
Each nylon strap has vegan leather accents to match, as well as a matte black buckle to keep everything secure. You can even add a monogram for added flair. Unfortunately, the belt is only adjustable up to 45 inches, so it's better suited for small suitcases or attaching personal items to your carry-on.
Worried about someone plucking your bag off of the baggage claim carousel by accident? This luggage strap will help bring peace of mind, since it can be personalized with your name, monogram or other identifying details up to 16 characters .
The woven strap is made of a durable polypropylene that adjusts from 35 to 64 inches (a bit smaller than other top picks) and has a plastic buckle to keep everything secure. It also has an important extra: A patented, heavy-duty plastic brake clip that helps prevent the strap from slipping off of your luggage en route.
Swiss Gear is another well-known brand that's been manufacturing luggage and travel gear for more than two decades. Like other high-quality luggage straps, this one is made from a heavy-duty polypropylene and boasts a stainless steel fastener that reviewers say stays firmly clasped . The strap only comes in two shades, but the red is very vibrant — a great option for anyone who prioritizes visibility. It also adjusts up to an impressive 72 inches.
The sister product to our top overall pick, this luggage strap from Samsonite has all of the same great features. It's constructed out of polypropylene and ABS that's supposed to be resistant to wear and tear, adjusts up to 72 inches and comes in four colors including more a neutral black and an easier-to-spot orange.
One downside: it can be just as tricky to adjust the length as its sister pick. But here's where this product differs: It has a TSA-approved combination lock to establish extra theft-protection. The triple-dial mechanism sets and resets, allowing you to choose from hundreds of possible combinations.
It can be difficult to manage multiple bags at once — especially if you're alone in a busy transportation hub. This uniquely designed luggage strap can help make the task more approachable. The double-looped T-shaped design allows you to seamlessly connect two suitcases to one another.
It even comes with an additional strap to secure a smaller third bag, like a personal item. The nylon strap can hold a whopping 400 pounds and boasts an alloy steel buckle that's just as well-equipped to handle those bigger loads. Unfortunately, this strap only comes in black, but it's really meant to be more of an aid rather than a visual cue.
Not only is this rainbow luggage strap playful and fun, but it's also very easy to spot in a crowd. Alternatively, choose from a range of 18 other colors and patterns. Of course, it's as functional as you'd hope.
The package of two can be used to secure your suitcase vertically, horizontally or with a crossed design for added security. It's also made of a high-density jacquard polyester and adjusts up to 76.5 inches. On the downside, some reviewers say the plastic buckle isn't as heavy-duty as they'd hope.
Though nylon, polyester and polypropylene tend to be more durable, they don't have much give — you're much more limited by the products dimensions. This elastic luggage strap is different, because the straps, which come in an X pattern, stretch around your suitcase for the perfect fit — no adjusting with finicky buckles.
Of course, there are limitations to the stretch, and you won't be able to get this one around a large suitcase vertically. You can, however, use it to secure luggage horizontally or even to attach a carry-on item to rolling baggage.
Another vibrant set of luggage straps that's easy to spot, but this time in an array of four neon colors. The color isn't the only claim to fame, though. These luggage straps adjust to more than 78 inches — the longest of any other belt on this list .
Theses straps are made of rugged polypropylene and have sturdy, quick-release plastic buckles that aren't quite as solid as others made of stainless steel, but still get the job done. There's another nice design feature worth mentioning: Each strap has a window where you can insert a card with personal details — a name, phone number or e-mail address — should your baggage get lost.
What to look for when shopping for the best luggage straps
Luggage straps are fairly uncomplicated products and most will get the job done just fine, but a few special considerations can help you cherry pick the best of the best:
✔️ Material : The best luggage straps are made of performance synthetics — nylon, polyester and polypropylene, for example — because they’re strong, keep their shape well and are water-resistant. Overall, according to our Textiles Lab pros, nylon is considered the most durable, though polyester and polypropylene (a type of plastic) are wholly sufficient, particularly for occasional use during regular travel.
✔️ Size: The vast majority of luggage straps are adjustable, but it pays to consider any minimum and maximum dimensions prior to purchasing to ensure it will fit your suitcase.
✔️ Lock: A lock provides an added measure of security, but must be TSA-approved.
✔️ Color: If you have a standard suitcase — i.e. one that looks like all of the other black suitcases out there — you may want to select a colorful or personalized luggage strap that will help you identify your bag at baggage claim.
Are luggage straps TSA-approved?
All checked and carry-on baggage is subject to security screenings, and baggage must be able to be opened for inspection, should it be deemed necessary. Luggage straps are TSA-approved, but they must be easily removable either by a buckle closure or a TSA-approved lock.
Are luggage straps worth it?
Luggage straps are designed to keep your suitcase securely closed, plus can help you spot your bag in a sea of others. Though t hey're not a must-have, they can provide peace of mind, especially for anxious travelers. They're easy to use, too. Just wrap the luggage strap around a zipped suitcase, adjust for a snug fit, and fasten the buckle.

If you’re worried about your luggage zipper breaking while you’re traveling, consider buying a luggage strap — they cinch down your luggage and add another layer of security in case you have a zipper fiasco. This is just one of their many benefits, though. Luggage straps often come in bright colors and patterns as well, making them great to use for identifying your suitcase faster at baggage claim, or having someone else accidentally grab your bag.
You can also use luggage straps to attach pieces of luggage together, which makes them easier to roll around and frees up your hands for additional carry-on items. Our favorite luggage strap comes from Samsonite, as it’s durable, affordable, and made by a trusted travel brand. Browse through our list to see some of our other favorite luggage straps to keep all of your belongings stored safely.
Best Overall
Samsonite luggage strap.
It’s built to last and adjusts to fit bags up to 72 inches.
The strap can come loose and get lost if not properly tightened.
A leader in the travel game, Samsonite is known for making quality travel products and is among our favorite luggage brands . Their luggage strap is no exception. Made from durable polypropylene, the strap fits bags up to 72 inches, and has a strong buckle that stands up against baggage claim and plane cargo holds. It has crescent moon shapes across the strap for an added design element, which can also help you find your bag quicker at the baggage carousel. We love that it's easy to adjust the length of the strap to fit your suitcase, and it comes at a great price point, too.
The Details: Plastic, polypropylene | 72 x 2 inches | Adjustable | Buckle closure
Best Budget
Ricqd 2 in 1 travel belt.
You can use it over a luggage handle or around a suitcase.
It can be tricky to loosen and adjust when the belt is already on a suitcase.
For a simple luggage strap that will secure both your handbag around your suitcase handle and your suitcase itself, this luggage strap from RICQD is a winner. It has a double-layer design to fasten it to your luggage handle, and a steel buckle for fastening it around a suitcase. The strap is adjustable as well, allowing you to cinch it around a variety of suitcase sizes. Plus, it’s TSA approved, allowing you to get through security quickly. It also has a velcro portion that allows you to secure the strap over a luggage handle, ensuring that the strap stays in place.
The Details: Stainless steel, nylon | 74 x 2 inches | Adjustable | Buckle closure
Cincha Travel Belt
There’s a style fit for every personality.
There’s no carrying bag or case for the belt.
Fashion is the focus with the Cincha Travel Belt, as it comes in a variety of colors and patterns, including a fun yellow and white waffle pattern and a leopard print. It makes travel a breeze by securing your purse or personal bag to your suitcase handle, allowing you to go hands free and keeping shoulder pain at bay since you don’t have a bag slung across your body. You can add a monogram onto it for a personal touch, and add on the small carrying case to store sunglasses and smaller items if you wish. It is adjustable up to 45 inches, and comes with vegan leather and elastic accents that give a tight hold. The buckle closure makes it easy to take on and off — a plus for faster processing at security checkpoints.
The Details: Nylon, steel | 45 inches | Adjustable | Buckle closure
Best Luxury
Rimowa luggage belt.
The aluminum buckle is sturdy and can withstand years of wear.
The color options are limited.
Maybe you already have a Rimowa suitcase and want the matching luggage strap, or maybe you’re just looking to fancy up your luggage with a luxury belt finish. Either way, the Rimowa Luggage Belt is a statement piece that will help secure your luggage. The Rimowa name is printed across the front of the belt, and an aluminum buckle fastens it to your suitcase. Leather trimmings complete the belt, and it comes in three colors and two different sizes to fit Rimowa’s Cabin , Check-In , and Trunk-sized luggage. A two-year warranty is included, so you have peace of mind in the rare event that you’ll need a replacement.
The Details: Plastic, leather, aluminum | Adjustable | Buckle closure
Most Visible
Luxebell luggage straps.
Each strap has a clear pocket to insert an ID tag.
The buckle is plastic.
This set of four bright luggage straps comes with one orange, blue, green, and pink strap each, making it easy to spot your luggage at baggage claim. Use whatever color combination you like, and secure the straps around the suitcase vertically or horizontally (or both) for an easy way to identify your luggage. The straps are three and a half feet long at minimum and six and a half feet long at maximum. They’re also adjustable, so you can cinch up the strap to fit your needs. Each strap has a built-in clear pocket as well, so you can add in a small ID tag to help you further identify your bag at baggage claim. If you end up not using all of the straps, the set is also great for sharing with family and friends going with you on your travels.
The Details: Polypropylene, plastic | 78 x 2 inches | Adjustable | Buckle closure
Best Locking
Samsonite luggage strap, combination lock.
The lock is a dial design (no key needed).
For added security, you'll still need a TSA-approved lock for your luggage zipper.
While its not completely foolproof, a luggage strap with a lock might deter an unnecessary bag check at security, and it might make it a bit easier to spot your bag at baggage claim. Samsonite’s luggage strap with a combination lock fastens with a buckle and has a triple-dial locking design that sets and resets with hundreds of possible combinations. It fits bags up to 72 inches around, and bright orange, purple, and blue colors make it easy to spot at baggage claim. It also comes in black in case you want a sleeker look.
The Details: Plastic, polyester, metal | 72 x 2 inches | Adjustable | Buckle closure
Best Cross Strap
Travelkin luggage straps.
It comes with two straps so you can do the cross method.
The straps can slide around on the luggage if not properly tightened.
To really secure your luggage, it’s best to make a cross design with your luggage straps, one going around the luggage horizontally and the other vertically. This pack of two luggage straps is perfect for just that, and they’re made with durable and heavy duty polyester to keep your suitcase secured. Travelkin makes numerous straps in bright colors and prints, making it easy to spot at baggage claim. The straps fasten with a steel buckle and are adjustable to fit your suitcase as well. A one-year warranty is included.
The Details: Polyester, steel | 75 x 1.9 inches | Adjustable | Buckle closure
Best Elastic
Zinz luggage strap.
The elastic works to secure your suitcase.
Only one size is available.
Made with stretchy elastic straps, the Zinz luggage strap is made in an X design that fits snugly around your suitcase. It clips closed with a buckle closure, and helps keep your suitcase shut when it’s bursting at the seams. You can also use it for securing a personal item to the handle of your suitcase as well, making it easy to roll your bags around while traveling. Just wrap it horizontally around your suitcase, secure the buckle closed, and you’re good to go.
The Details: Nylon, plastic | 94.5 x 1 inches | Adjustable | Buckle closure
Best Personalized
Lillian vernon personalized luggage strap.
The custom embroidery will make finding your luggage at baggage claim a breeze.
It’s only adjustable from 35 to 64 inches.
You definitely won’t have trouble spotting your bag at baggage claim with this personalized luggage strap from Lillian Vernon. It comes in four different color options and will have your name (or nickname, initials, etc.) across it in large letters. Personalize it with up to 16 characters (with spaces), and secure it with the buckle to keep all your belongings safe. The strap is adjustable from 35 to 64 inches, so measure accordingly before purchasing.
The Details: Plastic, polypropylene | 64 x 2 inches | Adjustable | Buckle closure
Best For Multiple Bags
Vigorport luggage strap.
The buckle straps make it easy to attach all bags while on the move.
The straps keep your suitcases in line, but if you make a sharp turn or angle the luggage while walking, the bags might come out of line.
Why push around a heavy luggage cart when you can attach all your suitcases together and easily roll them around the airport instead? Vigorsport’s luggage straps are made to attach three pieces of luggage together, freeing up your hands and making things a bit easier while in transit. The T strap slides over your luggage handle, and has a buckle at the end so you can attach a piece of luggage onto it. The other single strap allows you to loop the strap around the second suitcase handle and then attach a third piece of luggage to the end, also secured by a buckle. Four different sizes are available.
The Details: Nylon, steel | 21 x 1 inches | Adjustable | Buckle closure
Tips for Buying Luggage Straps
Choose a size that can work for all of your luggage.
Before buying luggage straps, measure your luggage and make sure that the straps you’re buying will fit your luggage. Most luggage straps are adjustable, so you should be fine, but you’ll want to do a quick measure just to make sure. If you have multiple pieces of luggage, consider a strap with a wide measurement range to fit all of your bags.
Consider a color that will stand out
Don’t go with basic black straps. Most luggage straps now come in a wide range of bright colors and patterns, making it easier for you to identify your bag in a flash — and hopefully keeping anyone else from accidentally grabbing your bag. Consider a unique color or print that will help you find your bag fast.
Consider whether or not you need a locking luggage strap
Some suitcases already have a built-in, TSA-approved lock, but if yours doesn’t, a locking luggage strap could be a worthwhile layer of added security. It’s not going to prevent theft, as someone could just slide your luggage strap off, but it could deter a thief looking to quickly grab a bag.
Luggage straps are made to keep your suitcase closed in case the zipper breaks. Secure it tight enough so that if the zipper breaks, your suitcase will remain closed. They also function as a means for identifying your luggage in baggage claim and personalizing your luggage so someone else doesn’t accidentally grab it.
They aren’t necessary, but they can add an extra layer of security and keep your bags closed in case the zipper breaks. They’re also great for identifying your bag at baggage claim, and latching together multiple bags for easier transportation.
Yes, luggage straps are TSA-approved, but that doesn’t mean that TSA might not remove your luggage straps to inspect your bag. A locking luggage strap will have a TSA-approved lock that can be unlocked by TSA.

The summer months (June-August) are a great time to travel to Moscow to take advantage of the enjoyable mild temperatures. This is considered peak travel season. Bear in mind that hotel prices rise along with the temperatures!
If you’re planning a trip to Moscow during fall (September-November) try to plan for early fall. This way the temperatures will still be pleasant and winter won’t be threatening.
Russian winters (December-February) are not for the faint of heart as Napoleon learned to his peril. Some days the sun will be out for less than an hour, and snow is guaranteed. Although winters are exceptionally cold, this is when you’ll get a true glimpse of the Moscow experience!
The best time to visit Moscow is during spring (March-May). The temperatures will begin to creep up and the sun begins to shine for significant portions of the day. Hotel rates will also have yet to skyrocket into peak ranges!
With a Moscow City Pass , you can experience the best of Moscow at the CHEAPEST prices. Discounts, attractions, tickets, and even public transport are all standards in any good city pass – be sure invest now and save them $$$ when you arrive!
Moscow is a large city with many accommodation options to choose from. Staying in a location that fits with your travel plans will only enhance your Moscow itinerary. Here is a brief introduction to a few great areas of the city we recommend checking out!
The best place to stay in Moscow to be close to all the action is Kitay-Gorod. This charming neighborhood will put you within walking distance to Moscow’s famous Red Square, thus cutting down on travel time. This will allow you to see more of the city in a shorter amount of time!
It’s surrounded by restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops. If you’re a first-time visitor to Moscow, or just planning a quick weekend in Moscow, then this area is perfect for you!
Another great area to consider is the Zamoskvorechye district. This area of the city offers a blend of new and old Moscow. It has an artsy vibe and there are plenty of fun sites you can explore outside of the main touristy areas of Moscow.
Of course, as in all areas of Moscow, it’s close to public transportation that will quickly connect you with the rest of the city and make your Moscow itinerary super accessible!
Best Airbnb in Moscow – Exclusive Apartment in Old Moscow
Modern and cozy, this apartment is in the heart of Old Moscow. Bordering the Basmanny and Kitay-Gorod districts, this two-bedroom flat is walking distance to the Kremlin and Red Square. Safe, quiet, and comfortable, this is the best Airbnb in Moscow, no question!

Best Hostel in Moscow – Godzillas Hostel
Godzillas Hostel is located in the center of Moscow, just a short walk from all the major tourist attractions and the metro station. Guests will enjoy all the usual hostel perks such as self-catering facilities, 24-hour reception, Free Wi-Fi, and security lockers. Godzillas Hostel is one of our favourites in Moscow but they’re not taking guests right now. We’re not sure if they’re closed for good but we hope they’ll come back soon.
An important aspect of planning any trip is figuring out the transportation situation. You’re probably wondering how you’re going to get to all of your Moscow points of interest right? Luckily, this sprawling city has an excellent network of public transportation that will make traveling a breeze!
The underground metro system is the quickest and most efficient way to travel around Moscow. Most visitors rely exclusively on this super-efficient transportation system, which allows you to get to pretty much anywhere in the city! It’s also a great option if you’re planning a Moscow itinerary during the colder months, as you’ll be sheltered from the snow and freezing temperatures!
If you prefer above-ground transportation, buses, trams, and trolleybuses, run throughout the city and provide a rather comfortable alternative to the metro.
Moscow’s metro, buses, trams, and trolleybuses are all accessible with a ‘Troika’ card. This card can be topped up with any sum of money at a metro cash desk. The ticket is simple, convenient, and even refundable upon return to a cashier!
No matter which method you choose, you’ll never find yourself without an easy means of getting from point A to point B!
Red Square | Moscow Kremlin | Lenin’s Mausoleum | St. Basil’s Cathedral | GUM Department Store
Spend the first day of your itinerary taking your own self guided Moscow walking tour around the historic Red Square! This is Moscow’s compact city center and every stop on this list is within easy walking distance to the next! Get ready to see all of the top Moscow landmarks!
Day 1 / Stop 1 – The Red Square
- Why it’s awesome: The Red Square is the most recognizable area in Moscow, it has mesmerizing architecture and centuries worth of history attached to its name.
- Cost: Free to walk around, individual attractions in the square have separate fees.
- Food nearby: Check out Bar BQ Cafe for friendly service and good food in a great location! The atmosphere is upbeat and they’re open 24/7!
The Red Square is Moscow’s historic fortress and the center of the Russian government. The origins of the square date back to the late 15th century, when Ivan the Great decided to expand the Kremlin to reflect Moscow’s growing power and prestige!
During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!
The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!
It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!
In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

Take a walk in Zariadye park: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow after visiting Red Square
Zaryadie Park is just a 10-minute walk from St. Basil’s Cathedral, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary if you’re going to visit Moscow in 2 days. From its heights, you can see the red walls of the Kremlin. But, the most impressive point of view is the platform which overlooks the Moskva river. A must see! And clearly one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!
- Open 24 hours a day
- Good to know! Park Zaryadye is also a place to visit in Moscow in winter. Find out more here: What to do in Moscow in winter?

The Bolshoi Theater is the most famous Russian theater in the world. The most economical way to see a presentation at the Bolshoi Theater is to take the tickets on the theater’s official website in advance, so here is our tutorial to help you: How to buy tickets to the Bolshoi? In addition, several pedestrian or one-way streets are located north of the theater. It is therefore very pleasant to find them to leave the main axes of the megalopolis.
Visit the Moscow Kremlin
Visit Kremlin is on top of things to do in Moscow. A place of power for centuries, the Kremlin then shows us a whole different image when viewed from the inside. If you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, the Kremlin is certainly one of the must-see places in Moscow.
- Opening hours : Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thursday.
- See our blog post about visiting the Moscow Kremlin
Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior
This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.
- Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
- Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
- Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)
Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.
The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow
If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.
Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.
Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.
- Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.
Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University
The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.
- How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.
Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!
What to do in Moscow in 3 days?
If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!
VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era
VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!
GULAG History Museum
The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.
Discover the Patriarche Pounds district
It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.
What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days
If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.
Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow
The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!
Discovering Tchistye Proudy district
It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.
Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!
The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! 😉
In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?
What to visit in Moscow in 5 days?
Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.
Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery
Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Today the collection includes more than 140,000 pieces, 15,000 of which are paintings. Visiting the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the things to do in Moscow if you want to discover Russian art!
- Where? Pereoulok Lavrouchinski 10. A 5-minute walk from Tretiakovskaya station
- Opening hours. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Closed on Mondays.
- Entry tickets. 500 RUB.
Visiting the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts
The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts presents the treasures of ancient Egypt, the paintings of Rembrandt and Cézanne, a fine collection of Impressionism.
- Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 12
- Opening hours. Daily: 10: 00-20: 00, except Thursday: 11: 00-21: 00. Closed on Mondays. The boxes close an hour before closing.
- Entry tickets. The prices vary according to the collections from 300 to 750 RUB.
Walking on Arbat Street
All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.
Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)
Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.
Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.
Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow
Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!
- Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.
- Prices. 2200 RUB per person
- Opening hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Restaurant inside. Original, but rather a tourist trap.
What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?
There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .
If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.
There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!

Is Moscow Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report
On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia invaded its neighbor country Ukraine, starting a war between these two countries.
This act of invasion caused many Ukrainians to flee their country and seek shelter in places like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, etc…
At this time, we recommend no travel to Russia or Ukraine, or any neighboring countries for your own safety.
Russia : Safety by City
- Nizhny Novgorod
- Novosibirsk
- Saint Petersburg
- Yekaterinburg
Moscow, the capital of Russia, is a political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of this huge country.
It’s one of the most visited places in Russia, and for good reason.
The best-known parts of Russia are concentrated precisely in the urban areas and cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
Moscow’s history attracts the most tourists, as they are fascinated by it is a surreal and sometimes brutal but nevertheless thrilling and jaw-dropping national story.
In this city, visited by 17 million tourists annually, the history, told in its numerous museums, some of which are the world’s greatest, interacts with modernity.
For example, in the Garden of Fallen Monuments (Fallen Monument Park), you can see entire clusters of modern art contrasting with the very non-conceptual Communist monuments.
- Warnings & Dangers in Moscow
OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM
Generally speaking, Moscow today is safe as much as other cities in Europe, despite its problematic history with criminal activity in the 90s. However, if you’re planning on traveling to Moscow, keep in mind that you should always keep your guard up and remain aware of your surroundings, just in case.
TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW
Generally speaking, transportation in Moscow is safe, but you should bear in mind that kidnappings have been known to happen, mostly in unlicensed taxis, so be careful when hailing one on the streets. Keep in mind that the most dangerous areas where small crime tends to occur are the underground walkways, called “perekhods”. Only use official services like Yandex Taxi, Uber or Gett taxi.
PICKPOCKETS RISK: HIGH
Pickpocketing is very common in Moscow, and surprisingly it is mostly performed by groups of children. Pay attention to your belongings, don’t leave them in plain sight and be especially careful in crowded places like stations or near tourist attractions.
NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW
Moscow isn’t particularly susceptible to natural disasters. Some blizzards and snowstorms are possible during winter which can affect the traffic and delay your flights. During winter, be prepared to face the below-freezing temperatures.
MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM
The situation improved drastically when it comes to kidnappings and muggings. Generally, never accept free drinks or food when you’re in a club or a bar. Drink spiking and then attacking and robbing the victim have been reported on numerous occasions.
TERRORISM RISK: HIGH
After the recent terrorist attack in the subway in St. Petersburg the probability of this situation happening again in Moscow is very high.
SCAMS RISK: HIGH
There are many scams in Moscow, usually performed by children trying to distract you and then steal some money from you. Never talk to strange kids on the street. Also, you should avoid playing street gambling games.
WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW
Women are generally safe in Moscow, though you should avoid finding yourself alone in clubs or bars, and of course, apply all normal precaution measures like avoiding remote and poorly lit streets and areas.
- So... How Safe Is Moscow Really?
Moscow experienced a rise when it came to crime rates during the 1990s.
Violent crime, as well as petty crime and scams, had increased, but the biggest part of the violence was within the criminal groups themselves, and it didn’t affect foreigners that much.
However, it decreased since the 90s, so right now, for tourists, Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, it’s even less so.
The crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.
Also, you can count on the officials to be uncorrupted – don’t ever try to bribe them: you will be charged with bribery.
Bear in mind that if you are a member of the LGBT community, there is no reason to avoid Moscow altogether but you should refrain from any public displays of affection.
As of June 2013, “homosexual propaganda to minors” is prohibited, which means that any discussion of gay rights or homosexuality issues in the presence of minors is punishable by law.
While you walk around Moscow, you might encounter police officials that may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow.
You shouldn’t have any problems with this, because if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper.
- How Does Moscow Compare?
- Useful Information
Most countries do need a visa to enter Russia, and if you’re a U.S. citizen you must possess both a valid U.S. passport and a bona fide visa issued by a Russian Embassy or Consulate. None of the nationals that do need a visa can acquire one upon arrival, so make sure you apply for your visa in advance. If you are not sure about your visa status, visit www.doyouneedvisa.com which will let you know whether or not you need visa based on your nationality and the country you want to visit.
The Russian ruble is the official currency in Moscow. ATMs are widespread throughout the country and credit cards are accepted everywhere.
Moscow has a highly continental influenced climate characterized by warm to hot and dry summers and extremely cold, freezing winters with temperatures as low as -30°C – sometimes even lower, with heavy snowfall.
Sheremetyevo International Airport is the Russian busiest international airport. It is located in Molzhaninovsky District, Northern Administrative Okrug, in Moscow, about 29 km northwest of central Moscow.
Travel Insurance
Just like anywhere else, we advise getting travel insurance when traveling to Moscow, because it would cover not only medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

That's just not true.
The person who wrote the text obviously have never been in Moscow and in Russia at all. This is ridiculous. Even about pickpocketing, the risk at most is medium, mugging is zero in historical places but is pretty high in sleeping quarters
Your rating is only two stars for safety though? So I am confused. Are you rating the article to be in poor taste?
I went to Moscow in 2021. I enjoyed the trip. I felt there were “unsafe areas” so I avoided them. So long as you know where you are going and don’t insult the locals, you should be fine.
51% safe?! Is this out of date?
Moscow and Russia in general are MUCH SAFER than Paris or London, yet those latter are more than 15 points ahead?!
Hell, it’s even admitted in the above text: “Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, IT’S EVEN LESS SO.” Yeah, you bet! And then: “the crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.” So why the low rating? I don’t get it.
Also, the latest terrorist attack in Moscow happened in 2010… so how can you honestly say that the risk is still “high”? Especially for the fact Russia is very much on the edge when it comes to fighting terrorism domestically and over the world.
Sure, it might not be ideal everywhere in Moscow, but it’s WAY SAFER than in Paris, especially at night. You just can’t go out in Paris after the evening anymore, in most areas (I got assaulted for no reason at Châtelet-les-Halles and taking the RER train at dark is becoming more and more risky)… while in Moscow, chances are that you’ll see girls in miniskirts walking home while quietly singing. Or maybe you’ll stumble upon some gorgeous lady asking you for a lighter and then giving you her number for a coffee the next day. So very dangerous!
I sense a serious bias, here. Is it because of that LGBT thing? Could you pick a more extreme case? Yeah, you can totally be gay in Russia, just be so in private. There even are transsexuals, but this is a traditional and respectable country, so you should respect their choice of not publicizing various sexual lifestyles.
Moscow and Saint Petersburg are safe
Moscow and Saint Petersburg are very safe in my opinion! I’ve been to both cities visiting family! There are so many people out on the streets and on public transportation- I felt very safe! You need to change your ratings!!
Any update on Covid-19 to visit Moscow
I visited 118 country and Moscow one of the safest city I have been, st Petersburg as well, I read this article hoping to find any update on covid-19 restrictions upon arrival, so if anyone can update I’m planning to visit Moscow again but I need to know if quarentain is required or mandatory, anyone can share, cheers.
In Russia nobody cares, masks off. I dont know if fiew thousands of infected per day are high for you though. I was never arrested for not wearing mask, but you have to have it on you. Sometimes cops ask to put mask, you just do that and everything ok, some shops can refuse to do service if you dont have mask. I assume they pressured by boss, so just put on mask, they can give you gloves and dont cause any problems.
Written by someone who never visited Russia
A veer biased review. Moscow or St. Petersburg for being such brilliant truly cosmopolitan cities are extremely safe. Pickpocketing in Russia?! By children?! Who wrote this? Clearly by someone who has never been to the great country of Russia.
Have never been there. But wish me well
Bias review, Moscow is much safer than that!
This review is so bias and just wrong! First of all apart from being a political, scientific and etc center, it is an absolutely beautiful city and a very culturally rich city. For tourists there’s a huge range of delicious food, amazing shopping, a lot of cultural activities, and all sorts of entertainment. I’ve travelled there in December 2019, and most of the time I spent walking around and exploring by myself, be it during day time or night, nothing happened to me once. I mostly used subways and sometimes taxi, both safe. Just have a common sense when it comes to safety and you’ll be fine. You need to travel there at least once in a lifetime, it’s a completely different experience and it’s a beautiful one, NOT a communistic terrorist epicenter as some describe it to be.

Trump’s Jan. 6 Case Could Go On Even if Court Limits Use of Obstruction Law
The federal indictment of Donald Trump for plotting to overturn the 2020 election relies in part on the law that the Supreme Court weighed on Tuesday, but was built to survive without it.
- Share full article
By Alan Feuer
Even though Donald J. Trump was never mentioned during the Supreme Court’s hearing on Tuesday about a federal obstruction statute used against hundreds of his supporters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, the former president loomed large over the proceeding.
That is because Mr. Trump has been charged under the law in question in an indictment he is facing in Washington that accuses him of plotting to overturn the 2020 election. And the court’s eventual decision on the obstruction law could affect how his case moves forward.
It remains unclear at this point how the court will rule, but at the hearing the justices signaled that federal prosecutors may have interpreted the law too broadly and used it unfairly against many of the rioters who were on the ground on Jan. 6. But even if the court tosses out the use of the law against the Trump supporters who broke into the Capitol, it does not mean that the course of Mr. Trump’s own case will be greatly altered.
Lawyers representing hundreds of Jan. 6 defendants have been questioning the use of the obstruction statute since long before Mr. Trump was charged with it in August. The lawyers have claimed, among other things, that one of the law’s central provisions, requiring the government to offer some proof that documents were destroyed or tampered with, has nothing to do with breaking into the Capitol.
If the Supreme Court ends up agreeing with them, Mr. Trump’s own lawyers will surely seek to have the two obstruction counts he is facing stricken from his indictment.
One of those counts accuses him of conspiring with six others who are unnamed — widely thought to be a group of lawyers close to him — to disrupt the certification of the election that took place inside the Capitol during a joint session of Congress on Jan. 6. The second count accuses him of actually obstructing that proceeding.
In fact, Mr. Trump’s lawyers have already tried to have those charges thrown out. In October, they argued unsuccessfully to the trial judge in the case, Tanya S. Chutkan, that the indictment unfairly used the statute. The lawyers pointed out that the law was initially “directed at the destruction of records in accounting fraud,” but had been applied in Mr. Trump’s case “to disputing the outcome of a presidential election.”
“This stretches the statutory language beyond any plausible mooring to its text,” the lawyers wrote.
Jack Smith, the special counsel handling Mr. Trump’s case, has asserted that the two obstruction counts against the former president would survive even if the justices narrowed the law to cover only crimes that involved tampering with documents or records.
Mr. Trump triggered that provision of the law, Mr. Smith has said, by plotting to create a series of false records: slates of electors pledged to him in several key swing states that he actually lost to President Biden. Mr. Smith has accused Mr. Trump of seeking to use those fake slates to obstruct the certification proceeding by throwing it into chaos and by urging his vice president, Mike Pence, to capitalize on the confusion by blocking or delaying the formal declaration of Mr. Biden’s victory and opening a path to Mr. Trump’s being named the winner.
But even if the obstruction counts were ultimately dismissed from Mr. Trump’s indictment, it might not prove to be a fatal blow to his prosecution.
Mr. Smith has also brought against Mr. Trump two more conspiracy charges that overlap almost entirely with the accusations in the obstruction counts. The other conspiracy counts accuse Mr. Trump of committing fraud by using deceit to subvert the normal course of the election and with plotting to deprive millions of Americans of the right to have their votes properly counted.
Those counts add a layer of redundancy to the indictment, which could survive intact even without the obstruction counts. There would be one downside, from the government’s perspective, to losing the obstruction charges: each carries a hefty maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The fraud conspiracy Mr. Trump is facing has a maximum penalty of five years in prison and voting rights conspiracy caps out at 10 years.
Any Supreme Court ruling that found in favor of the on-the-ground Jan. 6 defendants would not automatically strip the obstruction charges from Mr. Trump’s indictment. To get rid of those counts, he and his lawyers would have to first ask Judge Chutkan to do it. Depending on the details of the decision by the justices, she might deny Mr. Trump’s request.
But if the obstruction counts were in fact stricken from the case, it could, in theory, narrow the story that Mr. Smith would like to tell the jury — if and when the case goes to trial.
Mr. Smith has indicated that he wants to show the jury videos of the violence at the Capitol and perhaps introduce witnesses who will testify that they stormed the building believing they were acting on behalf of Mr. Trump.
But that could be more difficult without the obstruction counts given that those charges arguably offer the clearest legal path to introducing evidence about the riot at the Capitol itself. If Mr. Smith wanted to introduce that evidence without the obstruction counts, he would have to base his request on the remaining conspiracy charges, which may prove more challenging.
