Reviews Of Our Trips

Traveling with breakaway was an amazing experience. The hotel staff and especially the breakaway staff were all extremely helpful when it came to assisting us with any questions and concerns. Being and feeling safe when traveling to a different country is always a top priority and I felt taken care of by all of the staff. The excursions we’re super fun and I would definitely recommend traveling with Breakaway Beach!

I wasn’t sure at first about this senior trip because I didn’t know much about it but I heard about others going on this trip in the past so I signed up. I AM SO GLAD I DID! It was literally the best trip ever and the best way to celebrate graduating high school. Being surrounded by so many other students , staff there for you whenever and wherever you need them and the best pool parties and night events! There’s a reason you with a reputable company , highly recommend!

My senior trip to the Bahamas last year was one to remember! Breakaway beach team on-site was seriously phenomenal! Blew us out of the water with the overall experience and all of the activities planned. I got to meet a ton of new friends from all across the US that will be forever friends. Having the opportunity to volunteer with locals was the most rewarding part of my trip. I’m excited for my sister to have the same opportunity as me when she’s a senior. Lasting memories. Thanks Breakaway Beach for that.

Anyone with a kid going on a senior trip? Help!!

My son is a junior and we had a meeting last night to plan for their senior trip. The cost is not that bad for them to go to the Bahamas. I am just more than a little leary about letting him go off like that. He is my only child and we have been a little protective at times. He gets to do pretty much everything he wants to do but I am really nervous about this. He won't be going if some parents don't go as chaperones. The name of the group they are going through is Grad City. Anyone have experience with them or letting their child go off like this?

<font color=peach>what do you all think<br><font.

No, not yet. I went and survived but it was only to Florida and my much older boyfriend went which actually made my parents happy. They knew he would keep me safe and he did. I wouldnt allow my son to go out of the country unless I went. Id have a few drinks on the beach enjoy the sun and NOT follow him around, but would be there if he needed me and kinda try and keep an eye on him. Pack your bags mom and go with him. Have a great time and dont chase him around the whole time lol.

Not over my dead body would a child of mine leave the country without me if they were underage, and if all possible not even if they were of age.... Parents today are crazy... Take the amount and offer something that is just appealing to your son... Pick a friend and take a trip...

<font color=darkorchid>sweet chicken, that is one.

All I have to say is Natalie Holloway. I wouldn't let any future children of mine go on a trip like that.

Senior trip - most the kids are 17 or 18. In a year they're going to technically be on their own anyway. You also said that their are going to be chaperones? Yeah, I'd have no problem letting my child go, but I'm the kind of parent who would be more afraid of sending my child out into the cruel cruel world after having lived in a mommy bubble for 18 years. I'd rather he have some experiences and make some mistakes while he still has family support to fall back on. That being said, I'd still mention the Natallie Halloway story to emphasize the importance of staying with friends, Other than that - I'd just hope he had a great time and created some great memories.

Cindy's Mom

Cindy's Mom

I'd never let my kids go out of the country alone for their senior class trip. Not in a million years. I would be the first parent in the chaperone line.

<font color=darkorchid>When I stop laughing I will

If you think you are a little over protective you probably are a lot over protective so I'd start there. Before I would let him go on that kind of trip I would give him a lot more freedom now so he can learn to make good decisions now before he is in a situation with more dire consequences - Let's face it Natalie Holloway made some very bad choices on the last day she was alive. Will he go and remember common sense or will he go and be so thrilled with the freedom he looses all common sense. Only you know your kid. We are going to the meeting soon for my DD to go to Italy next summer with orchestra. If we can come up with the Money I have no qualms about her going and she will be in 10th grade so much younger. she is very independent and reliable, has flown many times by herself and is self reliant. I only question why these senior trips have to be to places that only highlight the activities most of us wish our kids weren't doing. Why couldn't they go to Disney?

chicagodisneyfan

Senior trips are still big here. I know I went to Europe with all my best friends and we had a blast! I thank my parents for having the strength to let go and let me see some of the world.

<font color=blue>I'm <s>22</s> 27 and I still kind

Honestly, far more kids leave the country with school groups and return fine, as opposed to cases such as Natalee Holloway. If you REALLY don't want your son to go, that's fne, but I'd advise you to think whether it's really worth him missing out on a good experience because of fears.

We live in a small sheltered kind of community. Everyone knows everyone. I feel safe letting him drive just about anywhere. He is a life guard so he is responsible and he is a good kid. We have talked about Natalie Holloway, limiting drinking (I know it is going to happen), not letting any drink he has out of his hand for a minute, not going off alone, etc. All the usual precautions. DS is a big kid, 6'2", 185 pounds. Now if he was a 5'2", 105 pound girl...totally different story. I am hoping my good friend will be going as chaperone. She has said her daughter won't be going without her. I know I have to let him go at some point and it is not for another year and a half almost. I am hoping they will all decide to just to go Panama City, FL but don't see that happening. You can see from my siggie that I am the type to want him to do things but why does it have to be now?

Oh please somebody tell me.

A lot of these senior trips to the Bahamas are just booze fests - lets be honest here. And no matter how well you raised your kids, when they are hundreds of miles away from home, with minimal supervision, sex with strangers, booze, and pot are serious temptation. And the latter two seriously impair judgment.

I told my DS (our only child) from the time he was in middle school that as long as I take a breath, he would NEVER go on a "senior" trip. It just wasn't going to happen. As it turned out, I didn't have to say no because he never asked.

I told my DS (our only child) from the time he was in middle school that as long as I take a breath, he would NEVER go on a "senior" trip. It just wasn't going to happen. Let's face it, these trips are not about sightseeing and going in the pool. I never had to say no because he never asked.

I went to France with my high school and it was fine. I would let him go. He is safer than if you let him get into a car with a group of friends.

Parenting is NOT for sissies!<br><font color="blue

<font color=red>spare yourself from asking me to d.

My kids are young yet, but when the time comes, I'd be far more willing to pay for them to go on a trip that has educational value (Europe, D.C., NYC, ect..) and well chaperoned than to pay for them to go on an underage VACATION to a location that is just going to be one big party (anyplace in Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas). Also, for any trip out of the country, my kid had better be happy to have me along as a chaperone.

The worst trip experience of my life

The worst trip experience of my life. Everything that they tell you is completely a lie. The other students and activities are a LIE. The workers are arrogant and act like they are too important or too busy to help you. Anything they promise as a reason to book a trip through them is not worth it. Or they did not do what was on the itinerary. You should plan a trip on your own because you will end up paying much more than the package price originally listed through Student City. This company is the WORST company to entrust your children with. The first thing their representatives do is LIE to you and your children. They sell the kids on trips that are suppose to be the BEST trip they will ever have. They give information that kids would want to hear, but not what they NEED to hear. They don't tell the kids that the prices can change, they don't tell the kids that the trip is non refundable until after they have made their last payment. The transportation to excursions are YOU paying for an UBER and them paying you back in cash. Not good business, Very shady. The excursions on you trip are lies. I would NOT have paid any money for my son to go on a trip with GradCity. They will not refund my money or a portion of it, I will NEVER endorse this company because the way they operate is sleazy and manipulative. They are the worst company to allow your children to do business with.

Dear Denise, We apologize for any confusion with your trip, trip details and excursions. Please contact our Customer Service department at [email protected] to further discuss. Thank you.

kid friendly!

We went to cancun last springbreak with grad city. The company was awesome. They were organized and had plenty of activities planned for our young adults. They did a great job keeping track of people and giving them their space too. I would recommend grad city for your springbreak tour company.

This was an amazing trip

This was an amazing trip. I went with my daughter and her friends for their senior trip. I planned it through gradcity because I wanted that extra level of safety. I could not be happier with that decision. Outings felt safe and I was very impressed. I am a teacher so I am used to being very vigilant but I felt safe. The bars we went to were closed to the public so it was only chaperones and two grad groups. There was plenty of staff and they were very professional. Grad city staff went above and beyond to help when the airline lost our luggage. They were also very easy to get ahold of. I was very impressed and I highly recommend this group.

I went on my first Grad City trip last week to the Bahamas trip and it was great to see how organized everything was for the students. Everyone I spoke to was having an amazing senior trip. Keep up the good work!!

Hi Eric, thank you for the review. We are glad to hear everyone was having an amazing time during their Senior trip!

Wonderful Trip...Great Memories!

Wonderful Trip...Great Memories! We recently returned from our Eisenhower Spring Break Trip to Punta Cana at the Hard Rock, that was organized by Grad City. We ALL LOVED our trip! Debbie Birecki was AWESOME with us through out the whole process of the trip. Her communication, organization and quick follow-up to all of our questions and needs were much appreciated. The staff on site were AMAZING as well. Special call out to, Stacey and Kevin, who did a lot of extras to make our daughter feel special. Highlights of our trip: Our direct charter flight though grad city was easy, low stress and very convenient. We heard many others had huge issues with their transportation. The food at the Steakhouses were both VERY good, especially for an all-inclusive. The Mediterranean restaurant and Mexican restaraunt were great as well. We thought our room was extremely spacious and comfortable. The Bali Bed rental is a must do. That day was one of our favorites on the beach. The beaches are gorgeous and a lot of fun if you like playing in the waves. We really liked that there were MANY options for pools. There were crazy, fun pools and low key, quite ones. The fitness center was hands down, one of the BEST we have ever been to before. VERY spacious; LOTS of machines and the staff was very attentive. We also really enjoyed the spa. Relaxing, spacious and calming. Thank you again Grad City for a wonderful experience for our family with MANY great memories.

Horrible company

Horrible company. Gather your school friends and book your own trip. The pricing is a huge rip off, you have a very very limited refund policy, they more you put in the more you lose. We booked rooms and flights to Mexico and a few months later the group leads suggested they add a Florida location due to Covid. So people switched to Florida and I’m left with a mexico trip with just a few kids going. Not what we signed up for. If I switch to Florida I’ll be stuck with 1400. In flight vouchers because I booked my flights myself to try and save money. This additional location has also split the group of people going between 2 locations so now the kids are divided up. Not what we signed up for! They can change your trip, add additional locations after you’ve booked flights based on the group leader suggesting changes. If you receive a check for any portion of your refund the check has a notification on the back that once you sign it you can’t chargeback for any amounts you dispute. The sales person told me on the phone that the first day I’d see kids throwing up, partying too hard on the first day until they realize they can’t handle the sun and alcohol. I should have run but gradcity creates peer pressure that everyone is booking through them and you don’t want your kid left out. Don’t give in... book your own trips and save money. Update: your reply says you can’t speak for “their policy” but then you go on to answer for them?! Zero sense like everything else. Our group or anyone enrolled was never asked if we wanted a second location, 1 person the organizer asked for it and didn’t ask the group. And your sign up was low and you added a second location to help your sales. This second location has approximately 11 people going to Florida and the rest going to the original spot. The group is now split into 2 locations which ruins the purpose of the trip, getting the kids ALL together. Yes, It is written in your contract locations can be changed and obviously it’s to help your sales vs asking those already enrolled what they would like to do as for adding another location. No one asked the group their preferences. I asked for that communication and it couldn’t be provided, the person who is your school parent contact can speak for the entire group and screw everyone else. I love the partial refund check I received actually has a stamped message on the signing line saying if I sign and cash the check I can’t file a chargeback. You obviously experience this a lot- wonder why

Date of experience : December 11, 2020

Dear Nichole, Yours and your husband's package/trip was booked through a different tour company/travel provider thus we cannot speak to their policies. GradCity offered a second option at the request and feedback from the group. This was not a decision made or put forward by GradCity, but a response to a request. GradCity spent several months researching and reviewing multiple domestic destinations and resorts. Several factors go into building a new program/offering a new destination such as allowing student groups during Spring Break, rates, activities on the property and in the area, closest airport, inclusions, etc.. After much research and review, GradCity was able to offer a domestic destination to the group. Members who still want to travel to Cabo, or new members who want to join, can. Members who want to switch to Florida, or register for the domestic destination, can as well. Sincerely, GradCity

Hey Daniel - so glad you enjoyed the place, food, people and clubs :)

The True Grad City

We stayed at Breezes in the Bahamas for 5 days and were appalled by what we observed with Grad City. The company promotes safety and protection of the students in their care but this was not evidenced during our stay. Allowing 17-18 year old kids an all-inclusive option with unlimited alcohol is disgraceful. “Staff” were nowhere to be seen while students did whatever they wanted. We witnessed kids so drunk they couldn’t walk on their own, vomit on the beach or other common areas of the resort, and have a general disrespect for the resort staff and other guests. The students were observed throwing fries at an older gentleman while he napped in a sun lounger in an effort to get the seagulls to peck the fries off him; having an altercation with other guests after being asked politely to respect their space; turning volume up on their speakers after being asked politely to turn it down; smoking in non-smoking areas; leaving trash all over the beach to blow away or for all the seagulls to swarm in that spot; yelling down to others from their balconies; partying in the pool until 3am; running up and down the halls and telling in the middle of the night, the list goes on. Students damaged property (literally ripping a door off its hinges and fleeing the scene and passing out in the shower causing 2 floors to flood which resulted in the water being turned off), refused to follow hotel policies (including mask requirements), student allegations of spiked drinks, and student allegations of sexual assault. We witnessed first had as students attempted to buy drugs from locals on the beach; students so drunk they passed out on the beach, one of them waking, unable to stand or walk well on her own and then running into the ocean and falling under water unable to get up on her own, which resulted in other beach goers and security intervening to prevent her from drowning. One elevator ride included a student so drunk he couldn’t walk and was being carried by 2 other students who claimed not to know him. A “staff” member was with, simply stating “he just needs to drink water and sleep” - yes he does, but he never should have been allowed to get to that point. “Staff” were observed hanging out on the beach or at the pool enjoying their own alcoholic drinks rather than actually supervising the students. I understand the legal drinking age is different in other countries but what I can’t understand is how people can be part of something that supports the unlimited and mostly unsupervised drinking involving high school students. It’s absolutely disgusting and they should be ashamed of themselves. If parents knew what they were actually paying for this child to participate in, I’m sure many would be appalled.

Date of experience : June 17, 2022

Dear Melanie, We apologize if your vacation was negatively impacted by any younger traveler. There are several high school tour companies that book/stay at the Breezes. The Breezes provides a Student Travel Advisory posted on their website stating they accept student groups March through June, and advising guests if they prefer to visit Breezes when fewer students and/or younger guests are at the resort, be sure to select travel dates outside of normal nationwide Spring Break and Graduation travel periods. We take the safety and supervision of our travelers very seriously. GradCity maintains the highest student to staff ratio in the business at 25:1. Our staff are screened, qualified, trained, and available 24/7 onsite. We have implemented several safety precautions to ensure the students' safety: pre-departure travel documents, emergency number, 24/7 on-site assistance, orientations and more. Our onsite team consists of full time employees and 90-95% returning staff members who have rotating shifts to provide supervision and assistance throughout our program. We meet the students at the airport in Nassau, do an orientation upon arrival at the hotel, are out at the pool/beach daily, at the night events, in our resource room, and at any GradCity sponsored event/activity. If you have further questions please contact our office.

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry Share Lead Through 36 Holes at Zurich Classic

McIlroy is playing this event for the first time, and the two-man team from Ireland is in a great spot at the event's halfway point.

  • Author: Jeff Ritter

Rory McIlroy might make his first trip to the Zurich Classic a memorable one.

He's playing with his buddy and fellow Irishman Shane Lowry this week in the PGA Tour's annual two-man team event, and the duo shot a 2-under 70 in Friday's alternate shot, good enough to move to 13 under for the event and into a four-way tie for the lead at the halfway point. Lowy-McIlroy made two bogeys and four birdies, including a birdie 4 on two of TPC Louisiana's par 5s.

"Shane has got a wonderful short game, and it gives me confidence going for those greens whether it be the par-4s or the par-5s that if I get it anywhere up there around the green, I'm going to have a very good look for birdie after he hits his," McIlroy said.

The Irishmen turned a solid round into a very good one with birdies on 7 and 8, their 16th and 17th holes of the day. After McIlroy's big drive on the par-4 8th found a greenside bunker, Lowry hit a nice blast out of the sand to set up an up-down-birdie.

Three teams share the lead with McIlroy and Lowry: Aaron Rai-David Lipsky, Andrew Novak-Davis Thompson and Ryan Brehm-Mark Hubbard.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, who won this event in 2022, are part of a six-team pack one shot behind the leaders. Defending champs Nick Hardy and Davis Riley made the cut on the number and trail by five.

But for now the focus remains on McIlroy and Lowry. When asked if the friends might venture out to have some fun in New Orleans at some point this week, Lowry, who is playing this event for the fourth time, quickly shot it down.

"No, no, no. We're here to play a golf tournament. We'll enjoy ourselves. We'll go for a nice dinner tonight," Lowry said.

"I'll do the same thing I do when I have an afternoon off. I'll go back to the hotel, freshen up, and go for a little stroll around the city and have a look at—just look around. That's what I do."
