The ship usually want you on board at least 30 minutes prior to sailing time and it also takes some time to get of the cruise ship once it arrives in port in the morning.     How long does it take to get to Green Island?

Just over one hour from Cairns in our 'Big Cat' and 45 minutes in our 'Reef Rocket'.

    Can I take a pram onboard the boat?

All our vessels are pram friendly. Boardwalks and pathways throughout the island are also suitable.

    Is there a life guard on duty?

Yes there is a life guard on duty at the northern beach.

    What time is lunch?

Lunch is served on board the 'Big Cat' between 11.30am and 1.00pm.

    Do you offer seasickness tablets?

Yes, we offer complimentary Travel Calm ginger tablets on board our vessels. These are a natural tablet that eases travel and motion sickness.

    Do you have wheelchair facilities?

Yes, but limited. Passengers must have some mobility and/or the presence of a carer who can assist them. Depending on tides it may be necessary to embark/disembark from different levels on the boat. Coral viewing and glass bottom boat activities are subject to the weather and the extent of the passengers mobility and/or the presence of a carer who can assist. Please note the toilets on the vessel are not wheelchair accessible but there are disabled toilets available on the island. These guidelines apply to standard wheelchairs only. We are not able to accommodate electric wheelchairs on any of the vessels or coaches.

    Do you have credit card facilities on board the boats?

Yes, you are able to purchase additional activities, beverages and confectionery with EFTPOS or credit card. Minimum spend and the following surcharges apply, Visa 1.5%, Mastercard 1.5%, Diners 3%, Amex 3.5% and JCB 3.5%. Cash withdrawal facilities are also available on the island.

    Do you supply floatation vests and lycra suits?

Yes, both these are available to hire at the bar on board the vessels. They can also be pre-booked or purchased at check in.

    Does the lunch cater for vegetarians and vegans?

Vegetarian dishes are available on the buffet, they include a vegetarian pasta bake, steamed jasmine rice, fresh salads, sliced white and multi-grain bread, tasty cheese, corn kernels, beetroot and a seasonal fruit platter. For other dietary requirements (celiac and vegan) we recommend that you bring your own packed lunch.

    Are there changing facilities on the island?

Yes, Big Cat passengers can use the islands facilities including toilets, fresh water showers, change rooms and rest rooms. Lockers are available to hire on the island at an additional cost.

    Is there any air conditioned facilities on the island?

Our Big Cat vessel remains at the island all day for clients pleasure and comfort. It is the only all weather, air conditioned base on the island.

    Is Green Island suitable for my young children?

The cruises are suitable for people of all ages, including families with young children. Additionally snorkelling directly from the beach is perfect for children and first time snorkelers.

    How is the snorkeling operated at the island, from a boat or the beach?

Snorkelling and safety presentation is given on board en route to Green Island. Snorkelling is undertaken at your own leisure, directly from the beach. A life guard is on duty in the flagged area at the northern beach.

    Are there stinger nets at Green Island beaches?

No. During the marine stinger season we highly recommend hiring a lycra suit for protection from the natural environment (AUD$8 adults/AUD$4 children).

    Do you supply towels?

We recommend that you bring along your own towels or you can purchase a towel from our souvenir range on board the boats.

    Is there WIFI on board?

Yes and the good news is that its FREE!

    Do I need to check in before the tour start time?

Yes, please check in at The Reef Fleet Terminal at least 30 minutes prior to your departure. Please present relevant vouchers or itineraries at check in and exchange for your boarding passes.

Avoid 'semi-submarine' during Green Island tour

My wife and I did a day trip to Green Island from Cairns today. We had booked Semi-sub as an add-on. It was a complete waste of money and time as nothing was visible from the semi-sub. It seems to be just a gimmick to fool customers. We also did the glass bottom boat from which we could at least see some coral and fish. While returning from Green Island to Cairns, one engine of the boat packed up and the boat took an additional 90 minutes. Due to slower speed there was much more rolling and pitching, making things very uncomfortable for the passengers.

Dear Debashis, Thanks for your review, although very disappointed to read your comments about the semi sub when this is one of the most popular and enjoyed activities we offer at Green Island. If you take the time to read some of the previous comments about the sub and check out our video on our website you will certainly find its no gimmik, it's a very popular option for families and guests who can't swim so it gives them an underwater view of the marinelife and coral. We obviously can't help weather conditions and appreciate this particular day it wasn't the best which in turn won't give the best view underwater. I acknowledge we had some technical difficulties that day on the way home and can confirm all guests were kept fully informed, offered free beverages and all coach services re arranged for drop back to the hotel. We have not been to Green Island for afew years and as locals thought we would try it again this weekend. Reef terminal was packed by we still got served promptly. Took the 10am semi-sub and at first I though what a rip off but by the end really enjoyed it and thought it worth the money. Buffet lunch was not bad and for $25 you really cant complain. Green Island itself was nice and it feels so good to swim in the ocean. Big Cat staff were very friendly and hepled with a smile if needed.

Wow what a difference 13 years makes. Where's the colour gone? What a disappointment, people walking on reef and hitting it with flippers, not all global problems. Staff were fantastic and friendly though mostly catering for asian market. We wanted to show grandchildren what a beautiful place this was, was definitely being the right word. What a shame. Internationsl tourists love it though. How long will this still last?

Had a great day on this cruise. Started off quite rough on the water but all the crew were amazing and very helpful too. The meal on board was delicious. The trip back was lovely and calm. It was a very enjoyable day would definitely recommend it

Whilst the crew on this tour were excellent, we were very disappointed in the tour from the snorkelling perspective. The snorkelling area was between ankle and waist deep, and we spent most of the time trying to avoid touching or damaging the precious coral. This tour is very well suited to families with young children, or people who either can't swim, or are poor swimmers. If you're a competent swimmer/norkeller, consider a different tour.

Things To Do And See On Green Island

Green Island is an absolutely brilliant showcase for aquatic life. There is a beautiful resort on Green Island accompanied by all the activities one could wish to do on a Great Barrier Reef island.

There is scuba diving, semi submersible submarine tours, glass bottom boat tours, snorkeling, shopping, day spa, restaurants and cocktail bars and a pool area to just laze about.

Green Island is relatively small and can easily be walked around in about an hour or more for those wanting to explore. At low tide much of the coral close to shore are exposed which means if you are snorkeling you can go out for the better part of a kilometer.

Take a pool noodle and place it under your arms so you can be out snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef from Green Island for hours just drifting along at your own pace.

Scenic Helicopter Flights From Green Island - Optional Extra

Green Island Glass Bottom Boat Tours

The fabulous glass bottom boat ride takes around twenty minutes or so and gives one a terrific idea about the diversity of marine life in and around the Great Barrier Reef.

You go out into the deep blue sea where the coral and marine life thrive in the deeper colder waters.

The fish feeding attracts all kinds of different species to the boat so make sure your camera is ready because there are so many great photo opportunities.

The glass bottom boat marine interpreter is informative and will point out and name the types of coral and fish as you cruise over the ocean floor just above the reef.

Green Island Semi Submersible Submarine Tour

The must book semi-submersible submarine tour is a fun ride as well showing you many more of the same fish from the glass walls in the concave of the submarine.

The perspective of the coral reef is totally different as you are cruising alongside the fish and they do not see you as a predator so the opportunity to see more fish and Green Sea Turtles is far greater so we do urge you to try the semi-submersible submarine whilst you are on Green Island .

On a few rare occasions giant Humpback whales have come alongside to take a look at the submarine to the delight of the guests inside the vessel.

These baleen whales frequent these waters from May to September on their annual Antartic migration.

If you have decided to skip all the activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving and helmet diving make sure that you take both boat tours as they are both great ways to see the reef and surrounding marine life without getting your hair wet and just the perfect way for the non swimmers to see and enjoy the Great Barrier Reef and her wonders also.

Snorkeling on Green Island

Snorkeling around Green Island is an excellent way to see the fish and other creatures of the Great Barrier Reef. The shallow waters that surround the island make snorkeling a good idea even for the most novices of swimmers.

As you get off the ferry cruise boat and walk onto the jetty the best area to snorkel is immediately on your right but please note this area is not patrolled by surf life savers and is only recommended for the better swimmers and snorkellers.

Here you may even have the chance of seeing a small shark. Nothing that could really harm anyone, just little black or white reef tip sharks so don’t be shy jump into it and start your snorkeling adventure.

Just off the lifeguard patrolled area which is on the northern tip of Green Island is a pretty good spot to see small fish and underwater sea life. On a low tide this area is ok but you will need to go out from the beach quite a long way to see bigger fish and more diversity of creatures so a flotation vest or pool noodle is recommended so you can go the distance and spend some leisurely time floating about watching the activity below the waters surface.

The catamaran ride out to Green Island was beautiful, weather sunny though very windy and rough conditions on the water. The boat rocked more than usual though felt safe and must admit, quite a fun ride going over the waves! Green Island is magical. Took my Mum there for the first time, she loved it. Walking through the national park and swimming in the waters were highlights.

What an amazing day! Absolutely loved the big cat ride out to/coming back from Green Island. The island is quite special. Highlight for me is swimming in the waters... so clear, fresh and a gorgeous turquoise 'paradise' colour. A place I will never forget and will definately return to. To sit above deck and feel the reef breeze riding along the Coral Sea, was the best feeling. Snorkelling is something I will try next time. Marineland Melanesia was nice to look through, the croc show was the highlight there! Lovely to see crocs looking relaxed!

Our favourite part was the the glass bottom boat ride but we were very disappointed in the buffet lunch we paid for. There were hardly any options and it was definitely not worth the money. Sub-par.

the trip would have been great except the weather was not great. Very windy sea had a bit of a swell happening so not the best. On the Island it was great very friendly and had a great look around. Will be going back hopefully the weather will be better but it was a great experience

We arrived as per the voucher instructions however this was far too early. The sea was very rough and lots of people were ill, but the crew were very apt at managing this situation. The food was limited, especially for vegetarians. The tour was as we expected though - the rough seas reduced visibility.

The trip was great. The ride over was very comfortable and there were drinks for sale on the boat. The island itself was beatiful and we chose to go snorkeling. The equipment was conveniently provided and we saw some beautiful fish. Would definitely recommend this trip for the price.

Highlights:.

Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises offers half day tours to Green Island, with two convenient departure and return times. This allows you to tailor your tour to suit your itinerary, with morning and afternoon tour times available. The half day tours provide up to two (2) hours to explore Green Island. The timing is to depart at 9am and return at 12.45pm, or depart at 1pm and return at 5pm.

Half day tours are provided aboard Big Cat’s ‘Reef Rocket’, a high speed, 24m catamaran which has 45-minute travel time to and from Cairns to Green Island. Green Island is the only Great Barrier Reef island to have tropical rainforest, which can be explored on shaded boardwalks with interpretive signage.

On the half day tours, there is time for guests to explore the rainforest and swim / snorkel from Green Island’s sandy beaches. Please note that most of the beaches are surrounded by sea grass beds, home to Green Sea Turtles, with the best Green Island snorkelling around the jetty area.

Green Island has a resort and Big Cat guests can utilise the licensed bar at the island to purchase hot and cold beverages. There is also a kiosk and restaurant on the island, which sell snacks and meals. Alternatively, take your own refreshments with you.

Owned and operated by a local Cairns family company, the half day Green Island tours include either snorkelling equipment or a glass bottom boat tour as standard, with guests able to upgrade their tour to include both activities and a semi-submersible tour at extra cost. All details are provided in the price table (below).

Two half day tours are available, meaning you can choose a morning or afternoon excursion to Green Island. No time is better than another, so just tailor your trip to suit your itinerary. Morning tours depart Cairns at 9am and return at 12.45pm: afternoon tours depart at 1pm and return at 5pm.

Each tour provides guests with up to two (2) hours to explore Green Island. Snorkelling demonstrations and reef presentations are provided on board Big Cat’s ‘Reef Rocket’ vessel, on the way to Green Island. The boat remains moored at the jetty during your stay, allowing you to come and go. The time on the island is your own but if you have booked a glass bottom boat tour, you will need to return to the jetty at the allocated time.

There is no scuba diving on the half day option.

Snorkeling:

Green Island snorkelling is conducted directly from the island’s sandy beaches and is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. You can choose to include snorkelling equipment in your standard tour price (at no extra charge) or book it as an added extra (if you want to include a glass bottom boat tour in your half day tour price: for more details, see the prices tab). Flotation vests and lycra suits can be hired from Big Cat: this is charged in addition to the standard ticket price. Snorkelling instruction is provided via the onboard video presentation. Equipment is available in adult and child sizes. The best? Green Island snorkelling is at the jetty, where your boat is moored.

Tour Notes:

Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons.

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “ Fit to dive ” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. A mask, snorkel and fins are included with the hire of snorkelling gear – or as a free inclusion with your tour if you choose the snorkelling activity option. 

Lycra suits, floatation vests and prescription masks are also available for hire. 

Snorkel straight off the beach at your leisure into the clear island waters and discover colourful coral gardens just metres from the shore.

The Reef around Green Island is known for its abundance and diversity of marine life.

You'll be gazing at multi-hued streams of reef fish swimming, marvelling at the giant clams, and even spotting a few stingrays.

Green Island is also known as a haven for sea turtles, so be on the lookout for these majestic creatures grazing on sea-grass.

Supervised boat snorkelling trips are also available for more advanced snorkellers.

Glass Bottom Boat Coral Viewing tour

Green Island Rainforest Walk

What makes Green Island unique is that it’s the only coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef with a rainforest.

You can explore the island's lush rainforest and diverse plant and birdlife at your own leisure on a scenic walk around the island. 

The rainforest walk begins on wooden walkways that thread in and out of the rainforest.

Informational placards will guide you along the way as you read about the island’s fascinating eco-system and history.

Though be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the exquisite flora and fauna that resides there today.

You won’t want to miss a sea eagle roosting, or a sparkling blue kingfisher flitting by!

Semi-Submersible Submarine

The semi-submersible submarine tour is a unique optional activity for non-swimmers or those who prefer to remain dry but want to experience the magical underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef.

Submerged in air-conditioned comfort and seated below water level, you’ll be treated to a diver's view of the coral reef and marine life, and learn some fascinating fishy facts from the crew.

The semi-submersible submarine tour holds a comfortable group of 27 passengers and lasts for 30 minutes – but the memories will last a lifetime.

Green Island is just a cash machine great publicity but not enough time to do the things booked

Thank you for your feedback, We are sorry to hear you did not enjoy your time on Green Island. We do have various tours available offering 2, 4 or 5 hours on the Island. If you are wanting to do more than 1 activity on Green Island it is better to choose one of the longer tours.

The trip to Green Island was absolutely beautiful. The company (Big Cat) was friendly and provided great service. The island itself was just incredible - such beautiful views and great snorkeling. I highly recommend.

Enjoyed the tour, but not able to see much of the reef because of the weather conditions (windy and reef covered with sand in places) Half a day is enough time on Green Island if you're not interested in sitting on the beach/snorkelling
