“People have already said it, but I’ll say it again: the itinerary is amazing. How many people in their twenties get to say they’ve partied in Ibiza, sipped wine in Santorini, cooked paella in Barcelona, and soaked up the sun in the French Riviera?”

Travel tips for our Europe tours

There are plenty of options when it comes to exploring the continent. Some of the most popular destinations to visit on a tour of Europe include Italy, Greece, Spain, and Ireland.

On our travel packages to Europe, you can choose to explore a particular location in depth, such as on a week-long Paris City Stay or a two-week Grand Tour of Italy .

If you're looking for a multi-country trip, you can join our Grand Tour of Europe: London to Rome , for a taste of several destinations. Our team of regional experts is available to help you find the adventure that aligns with your interests.

Discover six things to experience your first time traveling to Europe →

Europe is a year-round destination with varying climates across its many countries and regions. The best time to visit Europe depends on what type of experience you’d like to have and which destinations you’ll be visiting.

  • Summer. A popular time to travel to Europe is summer because warm, sunny days lend themselves to exploring the outdoors. In July, the average high temperature in London, England, is in the 70s Fahrenheit—while in Rome, Italy, the average high is in the 80s.
  • Spring and Fall. Some travelers prefer to travel on our Europe tour packages during the spring and fall because temperatures are more comfortable and popular sites are less crowded.
  • Winter. A wonderful time to take a European tour is the winter. During this time of year, travelers can stroll through festive holiday markets, visit excellent museums, and settle in for tasty meals of seasonal specialties. To take the stress out of planning a winter trip, we even offer Europe trip packages specifically designed for visiting  Christmas markets .

One of the main benefits of joining our guided tours of Europe is having the opportunity to visit must-see sites with an expert leading the way. When you go guided with Go Ahead we’ll help you skip the long lines at popular landmarks. Here are some attractions you’ll get the opportunity to see on our group tours of Europe:

  • The Colosseum in Rome, Italy
  • The National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy
  • St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy
  • The Alhambra in Granada, Spain
  • The Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain
  • La Sagrada Família church in Barcelona, Spain
  • The Acropolis in Athens, Greece
  • The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands
  • St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland
  • The Titanic Museum in Belfast, Northern Ireland
  • The Hungarian Parliament building in Budapest, Hungary
  • Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria
  • The Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, Norway
  • Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, Denmark

We recommend you spend at least six days in Europe. While our most popular Europe tours run from 10–14 days, you can enjoy a shorter trip if you limit your tour to one country or visit a handful of cities in neighboring countries.

With its rich history, vibrant culture, and fantastic food, Italy is a popular destination for your first European trip. But plenty of other countries are worth visiting depending on your interests and concerns about international travel. For example, if the language barrier makes you nervous, Ireland, Scotland, or England make great first-time trips for visiting Europe.

Yes! On our Europe tours, you’ll get the chance to explore multiple countries. Europe’s compact size and efficient transportation network make it easier—and more enticing—to take in numerous countries on one trip.

Some of our popular multi-country trips to Europe are Italy & Greece ; England & France ; Portugal & Spain ; Scotland & Ireland ; Germany, Switzerland & Austria ; and Norway, Sweden, Finland & Denmark .

Experiencing Europe—for the first time or your 10th time—should be all about taking in the culture, the food, the history, and the sheer joy of new discoveries. Every Go Ahead tour includes an expert Tour Director and talented local guides to lead the way, so you can sit back, relax, and soak in the beauty, history, and culture of Europe. No figuring out transportation, researching hotels, or booking flights is required.

Yes! The holidays are an exciting time to travel on our Europe trips because they offer an exceptional opportunity to visit Europe’s Christmas Markets  and to experience countries’ unique holiday traditions. The holidays are a magical time in many European countries, allowing you to soak in the seasonal ambiance, enjoy festive food, and pick up unique gifts.

Thankfully, that’s a tough question to answer, as so many European countries offer delicious food. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference, so you’re sure to find something you love no matter which country you visit. One strong contender for the top spot, however, is Italy.

Best known for its pasta, pizza, cheeses, and gelato, Italy is a foodie’s delight. That’s because the purest expression of Italian cooking relies on farm-fresh ingredients, and the cuisine changes from region to region. Fresh, delicious, and unlike anything you’ve tried outside the country, Italian food never disappoints the palate.

Wondering what to eat in Italy? Check out these regional dishes →

Another foodie's favorite destination in Europe is France. From its boeuf bourguignon to its pain au chocolat, France is known for its world-class culinary scene and timeless favorite dishes. While you’re guaranteed to taste delicious dishes no matter where you travel to France , the type of French food you’ll find depends on the region and season. The north of France features heavier dishes; the south features fresh fish, lean meat, and grilled vegetables.

While individual countries take pride in their languages, English is widely spoken in Europe.

We recommend packing light for your trip to Europe. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. After you’ve reserved one of our Europe tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.

  • Sun protection. For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Europe, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Layers. For tours of Europe, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. Because you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides while on your trip, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential. Whether hitting the landmarks of London or on a walking tour of Amsterdam, you’ll be glad you brought your most comfortable footwear.
  • Dressier attire. You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on any of our Europe trips.
  • Full-coverage layers for religious sites. In Europe, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and entrance may be denied on this basis.
  • Other must-bring items. A camera to take photos during your journey, and a notebook for jotting down notes or recommendations your Tour Director shares.

Europe travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're traveling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

To determine whether the country you're traveling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries.

Can I use my cell phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your cell phone while traveling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi).

What are the toilets like in Europe?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries.

Can I drink the water in Europe?

Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked.

When should I book a tour in Europe?

There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.

T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.

C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).

How much does a Europe tour cost?

A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500.

Is tipping common in Europe?

Tipping isn't as prevalent in Europe as it is in some other countries and definitely isn't expected, but if you like the quality of service you've been given at hotels, restaurants etc then a tip is always appreciated.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Europe?

While credit cards are accepted in all European countries (especially in capital cities and other larger cities), smaller cafes or local run businesses may not have EFTPOS machines so it's always best to carry around a little cash to cover these expenses.

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You should have no problem finding ATMs in most European cities.

What currency will I need on a Europe tour?

The official currency of Europe is the Euro (€), however, only 19 of the 28 countries in the European Union use this. Countries that still use their own currency include Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden.

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travelers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on traveling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognize this.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Destination must-see's.

Europe ms1

Irish countryside:

Take in the atmosphere of quaint seaside villages, see awe inspiring views of the Lakes of Killarney and explore the picturesque town of Kinsale. Wherever you travel in the countryside, you’ll find that the rolling hills and friendly people you encounter will become a part of your fabric.

Europe ms2

Ancient cities of Italy:

Italy is positively brimming with the world’s most famous Roman ruins like the Colosseum, Pompeii and many other relics from the ancient past. In fact, many cities in Italy still hold evidence of what once was. You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theater or the ruins of an entire city there.

Europe ms3

Get to know the city that was once considered the capital of the world! A panoramic tour by a local expert leads you to all the most iconic spots in London. See Trafalgar Square, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and many more places you’ve only read about.

Europe ms4

Louvre Museum:

The Louvre Museum holds some of the most priceless treasures in the world. Enjoy touring with a local expert who will take you through an array of works ranging from ancient times to the mid-19th century. Don’t keep the ladies waiting! DaVinci’s famous Mona Lisa and the renowned Venus de Milo await your visit!

Destination Must-Do's

Europe md1

Explore Chateau de Chillon:

Europe has a wide variety of castles to choose from. The exquisite Chateau de Chillon in Switzerland presides over Lake Geneva. Beginning life as a Roman outpost, today it is the nation’s most visited historic site.

Europe md2

Drift down a canal:

While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.

Europe md3

Drink Bordeaux wine:

Just about anywhere you travel in Europe, you’re bound to come across some fantastic wine, especially in Bordeaux in France. Resting on the Garonne River, this charming area is one of the largest wine growing regions on the continent.

Europe md4

Culinary Surprises:

The best way to experience a culture is to eat like the locals. The straightforward food of Great Britain always seems to delight travelers. While Italian food still reigns, you just might have the best meal of your life enjoying a steak and kidney pie or bangers and mash.

Brochures that Feature Our Europe Tours

Destinations in europe.

Magnificent landscapes combined with the country’s charming traditions and customs offer new experiences unlike anywhere else in the world. Whether it’s the eye-catching architecture of Madrid, the bold Spanish wines, or the shimmering Costa del Sol, this country remains a delight to the senses. Once you experience Spain, you’ll never want to leave and when you do, you’ll always be craving more.

Located on the west coast of Europe adjacent to Spain, Portugal offers breathtaking scenery from seemingly never-ending beaches to breathtaking views from hilltops high above the sea; rich and vibrant cultural experiences from inside museums to its city nightlife or village sidewalks; wildlife and challenging landscapes for the adventure seeker; and romantic sunsets and sand dunes and moonlit sails for the lover in all of us. Wait, we forgot amazing gastronomical pleasures created by Portugal’s food and wines, or perhaps those are also found under lover?! No matter what you seek, when you go, where you look or how long you stay, Portugal offers something every traveller wants and makes it all too easy to get.

Whether it’s old-world traditions and wonderful culture, cuisine, history, fashion or natural beauty, Italy is special to many people for different reasons. Few other countries boast so many legendary cities. There are also many charming hill towns and coastal villages that showcase Italy’s amazing natural beauty. From the big cities to the small towns, there is always something exciting to see in Italy. With so many reasons to visit, the rest is up to you!

A rendezvous with a magnifique experience awaits! As cliché as it sounds, France truly has something for everyone. With over two dozen cities, each with their own nuances of the French culture and contributions to its history, architecture, art and last but not least, the gastronomical delights that the French are famous for throughout the world are yours to explore, experience and fall in love with during your stay. Coast to coast, border to border, there are seemingly endless variations on your French experience to be had. Rolling hills and scenic valleys lined with the fruit of the gods; seaside towns, along sandy beaches with views you just might be sharing with royalty; or maybe snowcapped mountain ranges providing some of the best skiing in the world and an adrenaline rush to match is what you seek. Whatever you decide, France easily makes you feel as if you have stepped out of reality and into the art you learned about and loved since you were a child.

At the heart of Europe, fascinating events of contemporary and more historic times shape today’s Germany - from the fall of the Berlin Wall, to the rise of the Beatles in 1960s Hamburg plus wartime history, picture postcard castles such as Neuschwanstein and medieval cities such as Regensburg. Landscapes range from the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge and plains of the north. The Hanseatic port of Lubeck provides delicious Marzipan sweet treats, produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, a stein of German beer or glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are a worthy accompaniment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveller anticipates.

Switzerland

Incredible skiing on the Swiss Alps and delectable Swiss chocolate are only two reasons for visiting Switzerland. Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savor for a lifetime.

Greece has been and always will be a country of undeniable beauty from the coasts of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas and the bottom of the Vikos Gorge to the top of Mount Olympus. It’s a place grand enough for the Gods and quaint and friendly enough for us mere mortals to stroll along the streets and roam through the countryside while taking in the radiance of the sun and undeniable pleasures of the earth. Did you say romance? Greece awaits your arrival with so many ways to get something started, rekindle something that needs recharging or to kick things into high gear! With the epicurean delights created with a passion and commitment that rivals the country’s beauty, accompanied by the nectar that flows from the vineyards that the God’s so rightfully coveted, what and who’s not to love! Now we don’t condone shedding your clothes and donning a toga but we do understand the temptation might just be hard to resist. Perhaps you might enjoy a tour of the ancient ruins instead, or explore some history in one of the many museums filled with antiquities and creations of the masters. Maybe you’ll find your inner philosopher and find yourself pondering the meaning of life and other worthy subjects as Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle once did. This is only the beginning of the endless wonders you’ll find when you first set foot on Greek soil. Opa!

With its natural beauty, historical assets, location along one of the most important trade routes established decades ago and a diverse and welcoming population, Turkey just might rank in your top 10 list of places you never thought would go but were oh so glad you did! Where can you explore the most archaeological sites in the world where civilizations, empires and historic figures were born – Turkey. Where will you be able to sample the taste sensations created by the fusion of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines – Turkey. Where are you able to experience some of the best sailing, hiking, mountain trekking, windsurfing and golf in Europe – Turkey. Best of all, where will you wake up to find something new and amazing every day then go to sleep after viewing some of the most incredible sunsets that by whatever you name you choose, there truly must be a God - Turkey.

THIS IS WHAT AWAITS IN EUROPE

Towering castles. Untamed natural beauty. Captivating history. Can’t-miss cuisine. This is your time, your moment, your chance to discover Europe.

Destination Must-Sees

You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theatre or the ruins of an entire city there.

Destination Must-Dos

Whilst canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice.

Palace of Versailles France2022

The Palace of Versailles

The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.

Magnificent landscapes combined with the country’s charming traditions and customs offer new experiences unlike anywhere else in the world. Famous for bullfighting, Spain allows you to grab life by the horns and dive into adventure. Whether it’s the eye-catching architecture of Madrid, the bold Spanish wines, or the shimmering Costa del Sol, this country remains a delight to the senses. Once you experience Spain, you’ll never want to leave and when you do, you’ll always be craving more.

A gem of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is a paradise. On the coasts, sun-soaked beaches meet breathtaking hillside towns all down the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. In the cities, ancient structures rise up shoulder-to-shoulder with modern living. Everywhere you turn, you can find mouth-watering food paired with delicious local wines, medieval architecture paired with Moorish artistic influence, and friendly locals paired with charming attitudes. No matter what you seek, when you go, where you look, or how long you stay, Portugal offers something for every traveller.

At the heart of Europe, monumental contemporary and historic events shape today’s Germany. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of the Beatles in Hamburg, the culture of the country is marked by its influential past and present. Imagine yourself exploring postcard-worthy castles such as Neuschwanstein or wandering through medieval cities such as Regensburg. From the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge to the plains of the north, the range of Germany’s landscapes will capture your heart. Perhaps you’ll also indulge your taste buds as you sample the delicious Marzipan sweet treats of the Hanseatic port of Lubeck, which have been produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, know that a stein of German beer or a glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are both a worthy compliment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveler anticipates.

You will leave with plenty of memories to savour for a lifetime.

From the coasts of the Mediterranean to the top of Mount Olympus, Greece is a place grand enough for mythical gods and friendly enough for travellers alike. Uncover its ancient ruins and relics and take in an iconic landscape of whitewashed homes. This is only the beginning of the endless wonders you’ll find when you first set foot on Greek soil.

Traveling as a group presents all the typical stressors of travel ( getting to the airport on time , planning an itinerary , packing ) — but multiplied because you have to please multiple personalities. It can feel like an almost insurmountable task to please every single person when planning a family reunion, friend getaway, or colleague retreat. You can’t do it all. But these 12 destinations have it all. Whether you need physical activities for the athletic members of your group, art museums for the cultural buffs, or spa treatments for those who just want to kick their feet up while they’re away, these 12 European destinations have enough variety to please all the different people in your group. Now all you have to do is make sure everybody stays on their best behavior.

Danube River Cruise

If you know planning your group vacations is best left to the professionals, board a Danube river cruise. A river cruise keeps everybody with one home base (no rushing between hotels and having to go back because somebody forgot something) but keeps the culturally curious on their toes with calls in major cities like Vienna, Munich, and Budapest. A Danube river cruise will stop along vineyards, historical landmarks, and stunning natural cliffs. And, above all, it’s easy to meet each other for dinner on a cruise ship.

Rhine River Cruise

Much like the Danube, a Rhine river cruise flows through some of Europe’s most fascinating attractions. However, the Rhine is a perfect choice for groups who prefer more modern energy. A typical cruise will stop in Amsterdam, Cologne, Strasbourg, and Basel. The Rhine itself is a busier river, with 68 locks and several low bridges to navigate. It’s also a great choice for history buffs, as the Rhine was a key landmark during the end of World War II.

Rhone River Cruise

France’s version of the river cruise is a perfect choice for groups who like wine: learning about it, seeing it, and drinking it. After all, this is the area famous for producing Cote du Rhones and Beaujolais. But even those who are staying dry will find plenty to entertain themselves. A typical Rhone cruise includes stops in the historic palace of Avignon , a tour of the ancient Roman arena in Arles, and stops to see where Van Gogh painted some of his masterpieces.

There’s much more to Britain than London (although the capital is a fantastic jumping off point). Gather your troops and head into the English countryside. Learn about the history of British literature in the Lake District, go horseback riding along the coast in Cornwall, or hole up in a pub in East Anglia to get a feel for the culture. Plus — for any travelers in your group who are difficult to please — there’s no language barrier.

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

Ireland is an ideal vacation for groups looking to bond. There are so many more unique experiences in Ireland than swashing pints of Guinness and hiking sweeping green landscapes (although both are fantastic). Literature lovers can retrace the histories of Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, and W.B. Yeats. Those who prefer nature can spend time with the puffins of Skellig Michael. Rent a car and drive along the never-ending, winding highways. Join a party, make new friends over a couple pints, or even sleep in a castle. Ireland delights in the unexpected.

Even the Debby Downer of your group will find something fantastic in Italy. From the country’s remarkably well-preserved history in Rome to the glamorous seaside retreats of Cinque Terre, there is truly something for everybody in Italy. Shout “Forza Azzurri!” at a football (not soccer) game, learn how to make genuine Italian pasta from a genuine Italian nonna , or just while away the afternoon soaking up the sun on one of Italy’s famed beaches. There’s no chance of getting bored. Italy has enough art, nature, fashion, architecture, and fancy sports cars to keep your entire group entertained for weeks.

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

Spain is a country of diverse and beautiful landscapes. There are beaches, deserts, mountains, forests, and even volcanoes — all within just a few hours’ drive of the country. Follow the history of the Spanish Civil War in Madrid or visit the former filming locations of Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns in Almeria. If your group prefers to party, head to Ibiza. If you’d rather take it slow with the family, relax in Valencia. The Spanish lifestyle prioritizes nothing if not variety.

Considered by many to be the up-and-comer of western Europe, Portugal offers memorable experiences to groups that prefer a more laid-back vacation. Tour the lush Duoro Valley by train, boat, or helicopter, and be sure to sample the port wine for which the area is famous. Portugal also has a bounty of very old castles, dating back to medieval, gothic, and Moorish times. From Porto in the north to Lisbon in the south and more than 1,100 miles of picturesque coastline, Portugal is a destination with something to please everyone.

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

In terms of landscapes, France has a buffet: mountains, beaches, cities, caves, and cliffs. The brooding, rocky beaches of the northern coastline house immense history from World War II. The glamorous beaches of the south evoke a sense of year-round paradise. Head into the Alps for skiing, through the wine country of Bordeaux for a boozy tour or around the Loire Valley for a tour of some of the world’s most fabulous chateaux. A trip around l’Hexagone , as the French call their mainland, offers history, food, culture, nature, sports, and a sense of joie de vivre . In short: enough variety to entertain even the most persnickety people in your group.

A Finnish spa is an unlikely place for bonding, but within 10 minutes of sweating together in a wood lodge, everybody in your group will feel closer. After the sauna, explore Helsinki for a more urban cool experience or head up to Lapland to drop off the grid completely. If you go in the summer, you can experience the midnight sun but if you go in the winter months, you’ll have a better chance of spotting the northern lights.

If your group gathers around to watch Game of Thrones every week, take them on a trip to the real filming location. The city of Dubrovnik is famous as the setting for the series’ capital, King’s Landing. But the Dalmatian coast is photogenic enough that even those unfamiliar with the show will want to visit. Ancient stone fortresses, art galleries, and open-air markets are all charming places to while away the hours. Whatever you do: don’t leave without sampling the local and fresh fish, cheese, and wine.

Although all the pictures of Iceland don’t lie (it’s really as fantastic as it looks), there’s much more to the island country than hikes through the wilderness. There’s a thriving art scene in the capital of Reykjavik, Viking museums for history buffs, and foraging classes for those who want to get into the culinary scene. But the scenery in Iceland is so stunning, it might make a hiker out of the least athletic person in your group.

Under30Experiences Gift Card

More about europe group tours & trips, is traveling to europe safe as a solo traveler.

Solo travelers have been backpacking across Europe for decades. The modernization of most cities helps keep everyone connected and comfortable. At Under30Experiences, safety is always a priority and your Trip Leader will always be able to advise you on the local area. We always recommend traveling light, leaving valuables at home, and staying with your group if you are concerned. One of the great things about group travel is “safety in numbers”.

Will I have to know the local language?

You will find that many people in Europe know multiple languages, English often being one of them. Menus can usually be provided in English. However, your Trip Leader will know the local language to help navigate situations when they come up. Our travelers love to learn a little Spanish, Italian, Icelandic, French, Arabic, Greek, etc.

What is the best time of year to visit Europe?

Europe’s peak season is the summer months, but spring and fall are very popular as well. Places like Ireland and Scotland can stay cool and rainy year-round, while August can bring heat waves in places like Spain and Italy where air conditioning is often unavailable. You will find almost all of our Europe trips have numerous departures in June & September to take advantage of great weather and avoid peak crowds.  ‍ Iceland sounds like a cold place but it actually enjoys a relatively temperate climate. Even in October and November, you still rarely encounter freezing temperatures during the day. In May, June, and July, you’ll find nearly 24 hours of daylight in Iceland, while in October and November you’ll find only 6-8 hours of daylight, great for seeing the Northern Lights.

Why signup for a group trip to Europe?

Here are just a few of the reasons travelers join our group trips:

  • Not everyone wants to plan and research extensive itineraries. Our trips include many of the best locations and activities in each country built for young adventurous travelers.
  • A guide is with you throughout your trip to help with local languages, lead you on hikes, teach you about the area, and make sure each day goes as planned. It can be reassuring knowing that you are always on the right trail or having a Trip Leader that knows backup plans for bad weather or has recommendations for optional activities.
  • Meeting great people! When you join an Under30Experiences trip you know you will be with a group of like-minded people in your age range.

Over 800 5-star reviews!

"Just got back from the Ireland trip and had an absolutely fantastic time! Can't believe how well we all meshed with the other group members and became good friends at the end. The trip was so well planned with the right amount of activities and leisure time. I never felt rushed and it was just the right pace of vacationing and exploring."  - Ammara T. |  Yelp Review

Award-winning Small Group Tours in Europe’s Most Beautiful Places

Tours of a Lifetime

If this type of vacation appeals to you, you’ll enjoy our European Experiences trips! We offer small group tours in the most beautiful areas of Europe, special places that have captured our hearts in 30 years of European travel.

Each year we offer several weeks of The Luberon Experience in Provence, France, based in the village of Bonnieux (shown below) . Our other trips vary each year, as we share other wonderful places in Europe that we love with travelers looking for an in-depth experience. We’re beginning our 2024 season and just announced our 2025 schedule.

group travel in europe

Now booking for 2024 AND 2025!

We’re offering 24 trips in 2024 and 28 trips in 2025. Most of our trips are led by European Experiences owner and co-founder Kathy Wood or our partner in Provence, Jennifer Dugdale. Our new Inside Lyon trip will debut in 2025, led by our third team member, Drew Fedorka. We’re joined by an excellent team of co-leaders, including Kathy’s husband and co-founder Charley (now mostly retired). Learn about our team here .

Seven-night “Experience” trips

Kathy Wood leads seven-night Experience trips in the Luberon , the Chianti region of Tuscany, the Cotswolds , the Périgord (Dordogne) in southwest France, Normandy in northern France, Alsace in eastern France, and Puglia in southern Italy.

Jennifer Dugdale leads seven-night Experience trips in Paris , Mediterranean Provence , the Riviera Hillsides , and a new 2025 trip in northern Portugal .

Some Experience trips are now offered every other year.

Shorter “Inside” trips

We also offer four-night “Inside” trips based in cities, with a focus on special experiences and discoveries– not the typical tourist sites. These groups are smaller, about eight people. “Inside” trips are hosted by Jennifer Dugdale or Drew Fedorka and are intended to be combined with one of our week-long trips, but can be booked as a standalone trip. When an Inside trip is combined with an adjacent Experience, we’ll provide transportation between the two locations.

In France we offer Inside Paris and Inside Lyon , which can be combined with other trips in France. In England we offer Inside Bath before or after one our Cotswolds Experience weeks.

Longer “Experience” trips

We also offer several longer Experience trips, which include stays in several bases. Kathy and Charley Wood lead The Cornwall Experience (10 nights) and The European Christmas Experience (12 nights; four nights each in Salzburg, Munich, and Colmar).

Jennifer leads our new 11-night Morocco Experience trip, which was launched in March 2024. We’re especially excited about this new destination.

Trips Just for Women

We have a special commitment to help women travel. We’re delighted to offer six trips for groups of women only in 2024 and four women’s trips in 2025: our Women’s trips often include trips in the Luberon, the Riviera Hillsides, Mediterranean Provence, Paris (our four-night “Inside” experience), and the Cotswolds. In addition to that, culinary tours are a great choice for travelers who want to indulge in the local cuisine and learn about the region’s food culture. They are also a good option for those who want a more relaxed and low-key itinerary. The Bird’s Word Blog

Rediscovering the joys of group travel in europe.

By the time I embarked on the 2023 Competitours Europe Adventure trip this last July through Journeys International, it had been quite a while since I’d been on a group tour. In fact, I hadn’t done many group activities in general while navigating the Covid-19 pandemic. The trip was revitalizing for many reasons, and as I engaged with my fellow travelers, I realized how much I had missed the joys of group travel. Since my return, I have been reflecting on all the outcomes of traveling in community with others while on a one-of-a-kind tour like Competitours. I felt inspired to share how I rediscovered my love for group travel and why I found it to be such a rich and rewarding experience in this context.

A self-described “Amazing Race for Regular People,” Competitours combines travel, gamification, and suspense to deliver thrilling and immersive cultural activities that break down social barriers and build bonds with fellow travelers. I didn’t initially know what I was getting into, because the itinerary remained a mystery until the challenges were revealed each day. Over the 10-day trip, six teams endeavored to complete competitive activities that ran the gamut from rock climbing in Austria to chocolate making in Belgium. I laughed, celebrated, triumphed, lost, and lived my best life alongside 11 other travelers and our trip leader as we had a chance to explore a wide variety of activities that gave us a taste of the culture of the places we visited.

Here are five takeaways from the experience that reminded me of why I love group travel:

  • Away from the daily responsibilities of life, we could delight in “play” together. NPR’s Lifekit recently highlighted research regarding play and its importance as a human need even in adulthood in How to bring more play into your life : Life Kit : NPR . This group trip involved bonding through a lot of experimental “play” activities – from steering Blokarts on the beach (which left some of us giggling uncontrollably) to laser tag at WWII bunkers to a scavenger hunt in an old fort in the Netherlands. We felt like kids again, carefree and in the present moment of whatever exciting competition was before us at each stop in the journey. It was enriching and revitalizing to engage in myself personally, as well as to see the playfulness and creativity expressed by others in the group.
  • I was motivated by the light-hearted competition and friendly rivalry among the group. A 2009 study (Garcia & Avishalom) found that small group competitions tended to be the most motivating type of competition. I felt empowered and motivated to win challenges (my duo won several, but not the overall competition) in a supportive, small group of adventurers. But even when my team wasn’t winning, I felt a surge of pride and accomplishment as we completed each activity. The group encouraged each individual as we overcame fears, left inhibitions behind, and did our best to complete each activity.
  • We connected through collaboration . Although we were primarily competing as a team of two, some challenges required teams to group up or even included large all-traveler collaborative efforts. Sheep-herding in the Netherlands consisted of breaking the group into three teams to herd flocks through an obstacle course and then working all together to complete certain tasks, such as diverting some sheep away from others at certain key points in a course. In Austria, we joined other teams to build reed canoes for a treasure hunt and for one-handed strudel-making. For all of these events, the group had to communicate, problem-solve, and coordinate movements to complete group goals.
  • I was pushed just outside my typical comfort zone and inspired by those around me to keep going. Engaging in a mystery itinerary can be exciting and a little scary. As someone who has battled a fear of heights and related anxiety my whole life, I had to muster up my bravery to navigate a via ferrata course in the Austrian Alps step-by-step. I felt tremendous pride once I completed the course, which included wobbly bridges, climbing courses, and alpine ziplines at high elevations. Other competitors were in a similar position, so I wasn’t the only competitor that was facing fears that day. The group supported each other and cheered each other on through the course as people faced mental and physical obstacles in the hopes of winning the day’s challenge. I believe I was willing to take more risks and complete more of the course because I was alongside others seeing them do the same.
  • We made new friends. Outside of the team pairs, which included several couples, most members of the group didn’t know each other prior to the trip. Through shared adventures, meals, and transportation, we had the chance to converse and get to know each other better and walked away with positive friendships and memories. Our shared experiences on the trip gave way to conversations about life, philosophies, careers, families, travel, religion, and so much more. Human connection deepened along the way as we found ourselves both competing and encouraging each other to tackle the scenarios the trip threw at us. We laughed a lot together and had a good time developing new friendships.

While I was inspired by the Competitours trip specifically, any group adventure has the potential to create new friendships, push you outside of your comfort zone, build connection through collaboration, motivate you, and fill your soul with “play” and “togetherness.” At Journeys, we plan to explore even more ways to deliver group travel experiences in new and innovative ways that nourish your soul, feed a sense of adventure, and facilitate human connection.

If you’re interested in creating a customized group trip – Competitours-style or in other formats – for your family, employees, business partners, organization, or any combination of people, please inquire with Journeys at Customize Your Dream Trip – Journeys International .

overall I think the tour was well worth it for what you paid for and what was included Accommodation was good, (beds were comfortable ) buffet Breakfast every morning were good and the buses were pretty comfortable - I would say some parts of the tour were a bit rushed and you would have liked to have spent more time at some places, however as it is a "highlights" tour of quite a few countries, time was in short supply. It did give you good idea and feel for where you would like to go back too though. The Tour guides however helpful and friendly they were, I feel could have been a bit more organized and clear in so far as communicating information on i.e times to meet back, leaving times etc.. etc.. Overall I had a good time , enjoyed what I saw and would recommend this tour as it was well worth the money.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Europe

I did the ScanBaltic tour during the winter holiday season and it is a lot of distance to cover within a short amount of days. While I did greatly enjoy the trip, the Scandinavian part of the trip had several bumps in the road and did not leave much time to actual explore and experience the cities. We spent many hours on the bus during the day often arriving to the cities in the evening after the museums and major tourist destinations are already closed, so all you could do was eat maybe a dinner and briefly walk around for 2-3 hours before going to the hotel. Days are short in the winter so you couldn’t really see many of the main spots in the evening either. Additionally with this tour, the Spanish speaking tour guide did a much better thorough explanation of the history and description of our destinations than the English speaking one. We often had to ask some of the bilingual group members for the full information of what the Spanish speaking tour guide relayed. The big problem of the Scandinavian part of the tour was our bus getting pulled over by the police in Norway where we sat on a bus for 3 hours and we’re not allowed to leave, before anyone told us anything. This resulted in our New Years being spent at a gas station in Norway. We also missed Aarhus and time in Odense due to disorganization. However, once I joined up with the next group for the Baltics tour it was AMAZING. The tour guide Jose provided a lot of information about our destinations, and it was the same in both Spanish, English, and Portuguese. He was extremely helpful with giving tips and taking care of everyone in the tour group. He really made it a personal experience. This part of the tour also had a great amount of time allocated for each city and we could actually go to museums, main tourist spots, shops, etc. And experience the city and culture. For solo travelers: I went as a solo female traveler. On the Scandinavian part of the tour, there were several solo travelers both male and female in the group whom were very welcoming and ended up coming together as a group to make sure no one was alone for the holidays. I felt completely safe throughout the entire duration of the tour. I opted for the option to do a room share but never ended up being placed in a room with another solo traveler. I got lucky and had a private room 17/17 days. General clarification: when signing up for the tour, it will say look at the boards in the hotel for information about tours, departure times, etc. I was a little nervous about this and why a group chat in WhatsApp wasn’t just used to convey this information. You only have to look at the reception for information about the start of your tour on day 1. Any other day, your guides will tell you exactly what time and where you will need to be to depart and/or go on tours. My only suggestion would be for the Scandinavian tour to have 2-3 extra days added or maybe traveler between cities in the winter after the sun goes down at 4 so then people can sight see and tour museums during the daylight and when everything is still open. Overall it was the trip of a lifetime. Made new friends and a unforgettable memories. I hope this review helps for those booking in the future :)
The tour was awesome. Too bad it was short. Our Tour leader Noddy perform extremely well job organizing and controlling our big group so we was on time everywhere. Our driver Dennis professionalism is off the charts. Especially when we was driving through narrow streets of Italy. I would recommend this tour to others

The MICHELIN Guide announces top honors for Italian hotels in 2024.

MICHELIN Keys Florence Italy Hotels Rome

group travel in europe

On May 7, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new One, Two, and Three Key distinctions for the most outstanding hotels in Italy. This announcement comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Velona's Jungle Luxury Suites — Florence

Under 10 Rooms: The Tiny Keys Reign Across Italy

Expect: Bold, proprietor-driven design themes, special experiences, and hyper-personal service. The tiny hotels that pepper the cities and countryside might get lost on lists full of castles and palazzos, but these little boutiques with ten rooms or less are some the most creative and satisfying accommodations in all of Italy. It’s a given that you’ll find places like these in the Tuscan countryside ( Siena House and Follonico Suite B&B — both with just six bedrooms), but don’t miss the gems in the cities. Vico Milano is a seven room space filled with dazzling design furniture and contemporary art. Velona’s Jungle Luxury Suites is a pocket-sized jungle-themed luxury boutique full of animal-print upholstery and peacock-feather prints. Both are independently owned and marvelously compact.

Lupaia — Torrita di Siena

Pick One: A Castle or a Farmhouse Hotel in Tuscany

Two iconic options in Tuscany earned a bevy of Keys: the castle hotel and the classic farmhouse. The former speaks for itself — ancient fortifications that were once private residences, built to house the handsomely titled, and fortified against attack. Towers, turrets, and crenellations give way to handsome wine cellars and vineyard views. Look to Castello di Casole for a masterclass in how to convert a thousand-year-old estate into a historically preserved, contemporarily luxurious hotel. Meanwhile, the motif of the Tuscan farmhouse has been emulated throughout the world — but there’s nothing like the real thing. Hotels like Lupaia and Conti di San Bonifacio make farmhouse charm into nothing less than a work of art.

High Drama: Hotels on the Seaside of the Amalfi Coast

It’s profoundly satisfying to us that one of the most impressive places in the world has among the world’s most impressive hotels. On the Amalfi Coast, where natural cliffsides tumble down into an endless Italian sea, hotels like Palazzo Pascal and Le Sirenuse host guests in miraculous buildings that served for centuries as aristocratic homes over the water. Casa Angelina and Borgo Santandrea sport more modern builds. In either case, the views are perennially spectacular. Also read: High Drama in the Seaside Hotels of the Amalfi Coast

You can win a trip to Europe and 'meet' a great white shark on OCEARCH expedition. Here's how

Want a chance to get up close and personal with a great white shark? Here's your chance.

Those 21 or older can join OCEARCH on its research vessel during a white shark tagging expedition in Europe this summer.

But there's a catch. You'll have to win the grand prize in the non-profit research group's "Meet a Shark" sweepstakes .

The top prize is a 5-day, 4-night trip (airfare and hotel included) to a sponsor-selected destination in France, Ireland or Spain for the winner and one companion, and the opportunity to spend one to four nights on the research vessel M/V OCEARCH.

Aboard the ship, the winner and guest will have the chance to "meet some of the crew of the M/V OCEARCH shark research vessel, observe some of the world’s top shark scientists and researchers at work, and have the opportunity to ask them select questions. Also, if a shark is tagged and released during the expedition, the Grand Prize winner will have the opportunity to Meet A Shark from a safe observing position on the ship," according to the official contest rules .

Here's what to know about OCEARCH and the "Meet a Shark" sweepstakes:

What does OCEARCH do for sharks?

OCEARCH is a nonprofit research organization studying the ocean's giants.

The group studies keystone species, including great white sharks, essential for the health of the oceans.

"At OCEARCH, we’re on a mission to solve the Global White Shark Puzzle. There are nine populations of white sharks across the globe and OCEARCH’s goal is to assist regional scientists to better understand the life of the white shark in each of these populations," the group's website states .

OCEARCH was due to launch its 47th expedition on April 1 but canceled it due to delays in the repair and maintenance of its research vessel M/V OCEARCH, according to a post on X , formerly Twitter.

Instead, scientists plan to head to Europe this summer for Expedition Save the Med.

OCEARCH great white shark tagging expedition heads to Europe

Scientists plan to travel to Spain, France and Ireland aboard the research vessel M/V OCEARCH to study the Mediterranean Sea great white shark population . Expedition Save the Med is planned for July 29 to September 23.

"Ruthlessly persecuted. Completely misunderstood. Now critically endangered. OCEARCH is traveling over 4,000 miles to explore European waters and study the Mediterranean white shark population. A study of this kind has never been done before," the group posted on its website .

While confirmed sightings of great white sharks in the Mediterranean are rare, OCEARCH says there have been some in the Bay of Biscay along the coasts of Spain and France. Unconfirmed but credible sightings have also been made off the UK coast, where researchers believe Mediterranean white sharks go to forage.

"Just one shark could begin to unlock the secrets of the Mediterranean white shark population and help us protect the region."

How many sharks has OCEARCH tagged?

According to its tracker , OCEARCH has tagged 371 sharks, including 123 great white sharks.

  • 123 great white sharks
  • 144 tiger sharks
  • 9 blacktip sharks
  • 29 shortfin mako sharks
  • 25 blue sharks
  • 18 hammerhead sharks
  • 6 silky sharks
  • 6 bull sharks
  • 8 whale sharks
  • 3 great hammerhead sharks

The group has also tagged alligators, dolphins, seals, swordfish and turtles.

How to enter 'meet a shark' sweepstakes?

Make a donation to OCEARCH or fill out a registration form to be entered into the "Meet a Shark" sweepstakes and a chance to win a trip to Europe and a chance to "meet" a great white shark. No purchase is necessary, according to the official sweepstakes rules.

The sweepstakes started on May 1 and eligible entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. on August 5, 2024.

Entrants must be 21 or older and legal residents of the United States, Canada (excluding Quebec), the UK or Ireland.

Winners will be determined by random drawing. Official rules are available at meetashark.com .

What can you win in OCEARCH 'Meet a Shark' contest?

The grand prize winner and a guest get a 5-day, 4-night trip to Spain, France or Ireland with airfare and hotel included and have a chance to join OCEARCH scientists on their research vessel during the shark-tagging Expedition Save the Med.

And if you don't win the grand prize, there's still a chance at one of 100 prize packs that include items from YETI and Costa Sunglasses.

Ukraine-Russia war: Latest updates

Ask our military analysts or international correspondents a question on the Ukraine war in the box below.

Thursday 9 May 2024 09:18, UK

  • Putin: We want to avoid global confrontation, but nuclear forces ready if needed
  • Home Office expels Russian diplomat who was 'undeclared military intelligence officer'
  • Dominic Waghorn: Russia may have crossed the line - but UK move to expel attache increases risk of dangerous escalation
  • Ed Conway : Russian oil still seeping into UK - the reasons why sanctions are not working

Ask a question or make a comment

Vladimir Putin used his Victory Day speech this morning to warn that Russia's combat forces were "always ready".

But he admitted the country was going through a "difficult period".

You can watch a segment from his speech here:

We aren't bringing you live updates today, but here is the main story this morning.

Vladimir Putin has just finished speaking at Russia's annual Second World War victory parade.

The president, now in his fifth term, said that Russia will do all it could to avoid a global confrontation, amid rising rhetoric about a face-off with NATO.

Mr Putin, however, said it would not allow any nation or alliance to threaten Russia.

As he's said multiple times since he invaded Ukraine, the Russian leader warned the West that his nuclear forces were always at a state of combat readiness.

He was addressing scores of troops in Moscow's Red Square - here are the best images from the Russian capital...

Thanks for following our live coverage, we'll be back soon with more live updates.

Kosovo's foreign minister has said her country is convinced Russia must lose the war in Ukraine for conflict not to spread further in Europe.

Donika Gervalla-Schwarz said her young nation's support for Ukraine was unconditional - despite Kyiv not having recognised Kosovo's independence.

Ms Gervalla-Schwarzd her small Balkan nation, which declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, is repeatedly reminded of the aggressive intentions of both Serbia and its ally Russia.

"Ukraine hasn't recognised the Republic of Kosovo as a state, but we really believe that we know exactly what Ukraine is going through," she told The Associated Press in an interview.

"And we know that there is only one solution, not only for Ukraine, but for Europe," she said.

"It can only be Russia to lose the war and Ukraine to win this war. Otherwise, Europe should prepare for other conflicts in our continent."

The people of Kosovo were the targets of war crimes and other atrocities by Serbia's security forces in the 1990s, an experience that led Kosovo to seek independence.

"While Kosovo is a small state with very modest possibilities to help, we have tried to be very helpful with Ukraine and have not hesitated to show our unconditional support and sympathy to the people and to the state of Ukraine," Ms Gervalla-Schwarz said.

Lord Cameron has called the UK's measures on a Russian defence attache "an unequivocal message" to Moscow.

The foreign secretary was replying to James Cleverly's post on X in which he said the Home Office expelled a Russian defence attache as part of a series of measures against the country.

Other measures in the package include removing the diplomatic premises status from several Russian owned properties in the UK and capping the amount of time Russian diplomats can spend in the UK.

Budapest is once again raising eyebrows across the world's biggest military alliance as it pledges to defy a NATO initiative.

The alliance's long-term plan to support Ukraine militarily was agreed in April, but was dubbed a "crazy mission" by Hungary's foreign minister today.

Under the plans, NATO would take over some coordination work from a US-led coalition known as the Ramstein group.

Discussing the plans today, Peter Szijjarto said: "Hungary will stay out of NATO's crazy mission despite all the pressure."

Relations between Budapest and NATO have soured because of Hungary's foot-dragging over the ratification of Sweden's NATO accession - finally passed by Budapest in March - and also over nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban's close ties with Moscow.

The Russian embassy in London has said there will be "an appropriate response" after Britain expelled a Russian defence attache.

The embassy said the restrictions that had been imposed were done under a "groundless and ridiculous pretext", according to Russian state news agency TASS.

It comes after Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was reported as telling journalists that the Kremlin will respond appropriately following the expulsion.

Dominic Waghorn, international affairs editor

It's always assumed defence attaches play some kind of role gatherling intelligence and that is generally tolerated by their host countries.

They could be gathering data about weapons production for instance or ship building but there is a line they are expected not to cross.

The assumption here is that the Russians have broken the rules of the game.

But the British government will have thought long and hard before expelling the Russian. It doesn't come without cost.

In their day jobs defence attaches play a crucial role in liaising with their hosts.  That can be very important in terms of avoiding misunderstandings that could lead to unnecessary and dangerous escalation.

Losing Russia’s defence attache in London deprives the UK of one more line of liaison at a time when clear understanding and clarification could be essential to avoiding deepening conflict.

That is not ideal at a time of war.

What is not clear is how much these moves are connected specifically to the conduct of the Russians involved or should they actually be seen more as another chapter in the diplomatic war underway between Russia and the UK.

The UK has undoubtedly weakened Russia's ability to spy in the UK and gather intelligence but these measures will also affect Britain's ability to predict and avoid potential escalation.

That will be made even worse if Russia, as may be expected, responds with like-for-like retaliation

Seven people have been injured by Russian shelling in eastern Kharkiv, according to the region's governor.

Oleg Synegubov said among those wounded was an eight-year-old girl and three boys, two aged 14 and the other 15.

"Two [of the] boys are in serious condition, [the other] boy and [the] girl are in average condition," he said.

One 55-year-old civilian of unspecified gender was also hospitalised.

Two women had minor injuries.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has offered his thoughts on the expulsion of a Russian defence attache the government has accused of being an undeclared military intelligence officer.

"Today we've expelled Russia's defence attache who has been working as an intelligence officer for Putin in the UK," he said on X.

"We will not tolerate Putin’s efforts to undermine our nation and democracy and will continue to stand up for freedom here and in Ukraine."
