Sapa Travel Map - Sapa Trekking Map

Sapa Travel Map - sapatoursfromhanoi.com

No matter when you arrive, Sapa won’t let you down. However, for the majority of visitors, the ideal months to go are March through May or September through November . The weather is moderate throughout the day, there are fewer tourists, and there is less rain during these months, making it the most unhurried and genuine time to visit Sapa.

The best time to photograph ripe rice fields is in October if you want to get beautiful pictures. Peach and cherry blossoms are in bloom in February. The terraces turn green with newly planted rice paddy in May.

Travel between April and early June, or September and early October if you’re a hiker. You will enjoy the greatest views from the mountain tops during these months, and the routes will be dry and simple to ascend.

Trekking along rice terraces, tribal villages and mountainous terrains

Mountainous areas of northern Vietnam are among the best places all over the country for trekking, and Sapa is not out of this bucket list. Taking a trekking route in Sapa is the possibility to help you get out of the tourist trails, lead you to explore remote places, which are completely off the beaten track. Natural dramatic scenery in Sapa must be one of the most spectacular views that you've ever witnessed in your life. In case you prefer a less challenging journey, a short hiking route within a day or to nearby villages, along popular main roads is also a great option. As Sapa offers a wide range of trekking and hiking routes from easy to hard level, you can choose the route which is the most suitable for you, depending on your trekking skills and ability.

Explore the indigenous culture

Local culture is a unique charm that Sapa attracts tourists beside the amazing landscape. The distinct living condition has helped local ethnic communities here create their own traditions and customs which are different from the others. You can easily experience Sapa’s lifestyle through local markets, the fair for all trade among locals and only take place on specific dates in a month. To get to closer to their daily life, don’t hesitate to try visiting tribal villages through your trekking route, tasting local food, staying overnight with locals in rustic stilt houses and directly seeing how local costumes and traditional handicrafts are made. Their very unique way of life harmoniously associated with nature in Sapa is always tempting for you to come and explore.

Herbal Bath – Authentic Therapy in Sapa

Well-known as a healthy treatment which is signature therapy by Red Dao People in Sapa, a traditional herbal bath can be the most outstanding experience with Sapa locals ever. Depending on using purpose, the number of ingredients in Red Dao herbal water can vary from 10 to even 100. Average time to take a herbal bath is around 20 - 30 minutes with the warmth of water must be around 35 Celsius Degree. Not only as a popular refreshing remedy helping the entire body recover from fatigue, but Red Dao’s herbal water also has many other positive effects on blood circulation, bone suffering and skin detox. Soaking in herbal water and immerse yourself in relaxation will be good therapy for your health after a busy day exploring Sapa.

Visit numerous places for amazing sights

There are numerous places which are ideal for having a bird’s eye view overlooking Sapa’s breathtaking scenery. You can easily set off some of them in your trip, which are not forcing you have a trekking route such as: Tram Ton Pass – Heaven’s Gate (a superb place to see panoramic view of great valley below and O Quy Ho Pass – one of four greatest passes in NorthWestern Vietnam), Ham Rong Mount (ideal location to enjoy the imposing panorama of Sapa town and a part of SunWorld Fansipan Legend leading to Fansipan Peak) or just a cafeteria along Fansipan, Violet and Muong Hoa Road, which has balcony or outside terrace to witness the great view of Sapa’s beauty, etc.

Take a cable car ride to Fansipan Mountain (Indochina Summit)

Being Indochina Summit with the height of 3143m above sea level, Mount Fansipan is a truly tough challenge for anyone who dreams of standing on top of Indochina once in a lifetime. Instead of climbing from two to four days before, the cable car journey operated by Sun World Fansipan Legend has shortened the time conquering Fansipan within around 15 minutes. The cable car ride is not too long, but it is enough for you to admire the beautiful natural landscape which is thousands of meters away underneath. After arriving at the cable station on the top, it will take about 20 – 30 minutes to climb 600 more stairs to reach Fansipan peak, the roof of Indochina. Standing on the Peak, which is over 3000 metres above the sea level – an unimaginable altitude, and widen your eyes to surrounding mountains peaks among a sea of the clouds is indeed a priceless moment of your whole lifetime. You’d better spend half of a day to explore Sun World Fansipan Legend which is a huge complex of spiritual, recreation, cuisine and sightseeing in Sapa.

Combining both culture and natural beauty into one enticing package, Sapa is definitely worth visiting if you have the chance.

Sapa is a mountain town in northwest Vietnam, famous for its towering peaks, steep rice terraces and picturesque villages nestled between every breathtaking view. It is one of Vietnam’s top tourist destinations. The mountains are home to distinct ethnic minorities who are willing to open their homes to travelers for a chance to learn about their unique local cultures and explore their beautiful homeland. It is also one of the best places for trekking in Vietnam and is home to the country’s largest mountain—Mt Fansipan.

Full of magnificent scenery, wonderful trekking, and unique opportunities for cultural exchange, Sapa is one to add to your bucket list!

Read more to discover our top reasons why Sapa is worth visiting in 2023.

The ideal amount of time to spend in Sapa is 2-3 nights. If you plan on trekking, you’ll need at least 2 full days in Sapa.

Depending on which method of transport you choose, getting to Sapa from Hanoi can be a time-consuming and energy draining process. I strongly recommend including some time in your itinerary for rest – e.g. set aside your first afternoon/evening for recovery.

While it is technically possible to visit Sapa as a day trip from Hanoi, it’s not advisable.

There are very few companies that offer this option, simply because the drive is so long. Even if you left Hanoi at 6am, you wouldn’t arrive in Sapa until after lunch. That would only give you a few hours to explore.

I strongly recommend an alternative day trip such as Ninh Binh (< 2 hours from Hanoi) or even Halong Bay (< 3 hours from Hanoi).

No – there are no flights between Hanoi and Sapa. The closest airport to Sapa is Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport. The only way to travel between the two destinations is by road or rail.

There are several markets in Sapa and around that you can visit. Most markets are held once a week. Bac Ha market, the area’s most famous market, is held each Sunday. If this day does not suit your travel planning, you can visit one of the other impressive markets on other days.

Coc Ly Market (Available on Tuesday only) Cao Son Market (Available on Wednesday only) Lung Khau Nhin Market ( Available on Thursday only) Can Cau Market (Available on Saturday only) Bac Ha Market (Available on Sunday only) Muong Hum Market (Available on Sunday only) Muong Khuong Market (Available on Sunday only)

Sapa is a beautiful town in the northwest of Vietnam, famous for its stunning scenery, rich culture and diverse ethnic groups. There are many places to visit in Sapa, depending on your interests and time. Here are some of the best places to visit in Sapa.

Muong Hoa Valley: A scenic valley with rice terraces, streams and villages of different ethnic groups. You can ride a bike or trek through the valley and enjoy the views and the local life.

Fansipan Mountain: The highest peak in Vietnam and Indochina, also known as the Roof of Indochina. You can hike to the summit or take a cable car and admire the panoramic views of the mountains and clouds.

Local Markets: Sapa and the surrounding areas have many colorful markets where you can buy local handicrafts, souvenirs, trekking gear and food. Some of the most famous markets are Bac Ha, Coc Ly, Can Cau and Sapa Central Market.

Ethnic Villages: Sapa is home to many ethnic minorities, such as Hmong, Dao, Tay, Giay and Xa Pho. You can visit their villages and learn about their culture, traditions and customs. Some of the most popular villages are Cat Cat, Ta Phin, Lao Chai and Ta Van.

Silver Waterfall: A spectacular waterfall that cascades from 100 meters high. You can hear the sound of the water from afar and see the silver spray when you get closer. The waterfall is located near Tram Ton Pass, which is another scenic spot to visit.

These are just some of the best places to visit in Sapa. There are many more things to do and see in this charming town.

We have designed some special itineraries for tourists who only have 2 days, but still want to experience the most distinctive features of Sapa, including its terraced rice fields, ethnic lifestyles and culture, rolling hills, fertile plains, unforgettable treks, lush vegetation...

Northern Vietnam Odyssey Tour 6-Day

Danny was very organised and conscientious throughout my whole tour! It was great to have different guides in the various places we visited as they had a lot of personal knowledge from growing up in the area. Cha, our guide in Sapa, was from a local tribe & taught me some of their language, and Guang, our Hanoi guide, was incredibly knowledgeable, interesting and entertaining. My dietary requirements were taken care of in each place, which made things a lot easier too. A wonderful tour overall which gives you a great introduction to the best places in Northern Vietnam!

The trip was excellent value for money, all transport was seamless and organised. The excursion in Sapa was a big highlight and our guides all spoke very good English and were very helpful. The accommodation was basic but clean, better than expected for the cost of the trip. Would definitely recommend to other budget travellers.

Danny looked after my mum and I during this wonderful trip. He was attentive to our needs and was very organised. The hotel in Hanoi was clean and comfortable as were the other hotels. Our highlight was the Ha Long Bay boat stay, the boat was beautiful and the overnight stay was a wonderful experience. Thanks to Danny and the team!

The Beauty of Northern Vietnam in 8 Days

Vietnam Tour Fun had been providing excellent service and support throughout our trip. Ms Mai Hoa started to connect with us a few days before we arrived Vietnam. She was contactable throughout the whole trip. We scheduled to have Halong Bay cruise in the last 2 days in our itinerary. However a typhoon was approaching Vietnam and the government announced no cruise was allowed to set sail for safety reason. Ms Mai Hoa immediately contacted us and offered alternative trips for choosing. The difference in the tour fee was refunded to us after our trip finished. We were very happy with the services of Vietnam Tour Fun and Ms Mai Hoa. We had a great time there.

Mystique Vietnam Vacation In 13 Days by Realistic Asia Tour

Mystique Vietnam Vacation In 13 Days by Realistic Asia

It was our third trip to Vietnam, before we were visiting it for a beach break, but for this time we decided to take and adventure trip in the mountains. We have heard a lot from other travelers about Sapa and Ha Long Bay and wanted to visit it. We were unconfident to arrange this trip by ourselves and decided to book it with Realistc Asia. It was a great decision for us. Our travel advisor Hien has recommended us this trip as we wanted to get a full insight into Northern Vietnam. We couldn’t expect more! We visited local villages, and the market in the mountains, met many interesting people. Personally I was blown away with the views in Mu Cang Chai, it is probably one of the most beautiful places I ever visited. For those who want to see rice terraces I recommend to go there. We got all what we wanted: adventures, less visited areas, beautiful sceneries and authentic experience. Hien, thank you so much for organizing everything! You are the best!

I really liked this tour, a great mix of nature and tranquillity mixed with the hustle of Hanoi. Ha Long Bay is a must visit, with Bakhan village a hidden gem. I'm not someone who normally travels with tours but I appreciated the good mix of organised activities and free time to explore on your own. Legend Travel group did a great job of airport transfers and tour logistics.
Our tour with Tourradar was very well organised and because last minute alterations to the tour needed to be made these were handled very well.

1 Take a bus

Hason Hai Van sleeper bus Hanoi Sapa

The cheapest way to travel from Hanoi to Sapa is to take a bus. Long-distance bus services in Vietnam are more comfortable than other southeast asian countries. Taking a bus from Hanoi to Sapa is a good option if you are traveling on a budget. Many bus companies include a free hotel pick up. However, we always recommend being ready with a backup option if your pick-up does not come through.

Hason Hai Van sleeper bus Hanoi Sapa

We traveled with the Ha Son Hai Van bus company. They have a range of different buses in their fleet. We were particularly impressed with the Royal 20 Cabin Sleeper bus. The bus is spacious, comfortable and surprisingly luxurious. The Royal 20 cabin sleeper bus has comfortable beds with bedding included and an on board entertainment system. We couldn’t get this to work!

There are toilets on board the bus. We also love the thoughtful touch of including a free buffet with drinks and food at the bus station.

How much does it cost to take a bus from Hanoi to sapa?

Buses from between Hanoi and Sapa generally cost around 300,000VND – 400,000VND (approximately £10 – £15 or roughly $12 – $18)

How do you book bus tickets to travel from Hanoi to sapa?

There are several ways to book buses between Hanoi and Sapa. You can book directly with a bus company. Alternatively, speak to a tour operator in Hanoi or Sapa. You can also book Vietnam bus tickets online for this journey. Book tickets between Hanoi and Sapa with Sapa Dragon on Klook .

How long is the bus journey from Hanoi to sapa?

The bus journey normally takes 6 – 7 hours.

Some disadvantages of taking a bus from Hanoi to Sapa:

Here are some of the challenges and disadvantages of taking a bus. Firstly, some travelers have tried to arrange free hotel pick ups and been let down by the bus company. If you have time it may be better to get yourself to the bus station. Furthermore, if you take a night bus be aware that it will probably stop in the night and stops can be noisy and travellers have been woken up by drivers shouting.

If you take a sleeper bus be aware that cubicles may be too short for taller travelers. In some cases you may be dropped off outside of town (e.g. returning to Hanoi). Bus companies should organize transfers. Also a sleeper bus is less secure than a sleeper train. Never leave your valuables in your bag under the bus. Always make sure your valuables bag is very close to you and not accessible to anyone else (don’t leave it on the aisle side).

2 Take a luxury limo

limo van hanoi to sapa

A very fast and convenient way to travel between Hanoi and Sapa is to take a luxury limo van. This is a very comfortable shared 9-seater minibus with Wi-Fi, USB charging sockets, large comfortable seats and space for luggage. Luxury minibus limos offer a hotel pick up between 6am – 7.30am (you will be given an exact pick up time a day or two before departure). and they normally take one or two toilet breaks. It is worth taking a photo of the number plate of your minivan to make sure you find the right one at the end of the break. Many of the luxury limo minibuses do not allow food on board. Make sure you have a good breakfast before your departure.

How much does it cost to take a luxury limo from Hanoi to sapa?

500,000VND (around £17 or $20)

How do you book luxury limo tickets between Hanoi and Sapa?

We recommend that you book luxury limo between Hanoi and Sapa on Klook . This gives accountability, transparency and reassurance – and as ever you will always get a fair price on Klook.

The journey takes around 6 – 7 hours arriving at around 2pm at Sapa stone church

Taking a luxury limo between Hanoi and Sapa is genuinely a very good option. However, there are still a few setbacks. Firstly, it is important to be aware that you are not allowed to eat food on board. Another challenge of this journey is the bumpy windy road, especially towards the end of the journey. If you struggle with motion sickness this can be pretty tough. We recommend sitting towards the front of the bus if possible and bringing some motion sickness pills. Finally taking the minibus does involve getting quite an early start, especially if you are the first pick up.

3 Take a sleeper train

Night train from Hanoi to 4 bed sleeper cabin

The sleeper train is a fun, comfortable and unique way to travel between Hanoi and Sapa. Most sleeper trains depart from Hanoi around 9pm – 10pm from Hanoi central Railway station. The sleeper train is more expensive and slower than a bus. However, a sleeper train is likely to be more secure, comfortable and spacious than a bus.

Night train from Hanoi to 2 bed sleeper cabin

Trains also offer better facilities than a bus. It is not possible to get a sleeper train directly from Hanoi to Sapa. Instead, you need to take a sleeper train to a small town called Lao Cai (on the Chinese border). From here, you can take a mini bus to Sapa.

Night train hanoi to sapa door lock private cabin

Minibuses wait in the train station carpark in Lao Cai. They depart regularly once they fill up with passengers. If this sounds too awkward then the bus may be a better option for you (bus services are direct).

How much does it cost to take a train from Hanoi to Sapa?

Train prices vary between 700,000VND – 1,000,000VND (around £25 – £35 or around $30 – $40). You will then need to pay for a minibus transfer from Lao Cai to Sapa costing around 60,000VND. Minibuses wait in the carpark at the front of the station. Alternatively there is a scheduled bus to Sapa which costs 30,000VND per person and departs at 6am, 7am, 7.20am and 8pm.

TOP TIP: This may seem expensive but when you are working out your budget remember that this also gives you one night of accommodation as well as a journey. By taking a sleeper train you are saving the cost of a night of accommodation somewhere else.

How do you book train tickets to travel from Hanoi to Lao Chai?

You can book train tickets directly at the train station in Hanoi. You can book Vietnam train tickets on 12Go .

How long is the train journey from Hanoi to sapa?

Lao Chai to Sapa minibus train station

There are a few disadvantages of taking the train between Hanoi and Sapa. Firstly, you need to get yourself to the train station. No cushy hotel pick ups. What’s more, night trains arrive quite early in the morning, normally around 5am – 6am. Be prepared to be rushed off the train in the morning. Remember that the train arrive in a town called Lao Cai. It takes an additional 45 minutes – 1 hour to travel to Sapa. It is also worth being aware but there are no food options available on the train. Another way to get to Sapa is to rent a car and drive. This is probably a good option if you are traveling with a group or as a family and you’re looking for a convenient way to get around. Some disadvantages of renting a car in Vietnam for this journey:

Although renting a car is very convenient and allows a lot of freedom there are some disadvantages of doing this. Firstly, car rental is an expensive option. You will also need to consider the price of petrol as well as rental fees – which are pretty high. Car rental is not a good option of you’re traveling on a tight budget. However, if you are traveling as a family you can share the cost across your group and it may actually be worthwhile. Another thing to consider if you are renting a car in Vietnam is safety. We recommend driving very carefully and taking time to learn the new Road rules and conventions. Make sure you are fully qualified and insured to drive in Vietnam. Car rental companies may also request Western Union or Bank Transfers for the deposit.

Summary – what is the best way to travel from Hanoi to sapa?

Fruit Sapa homestay

Overall, the best way to travel between Hanoi and Sapa depends on your budget, desire for convenience and your specific needs as a traveler. If you are traveling on a tight budget we recommend taking a bus. A luxury sleeper bus can also be a very good option for a family, because the beds are comfortable and they also have toilets on board.

If you want a fast convenient trip, we recommend taking the luxury limo van. Slightly more expensive than buses – but may be worthwhile for the smooth efficient journey.

If you’re interested in a new experience and you don’t mind the journey taking longer, it is worth considering the sleeper train. Although sleeper trains are more expensive, remember that you save one night’s accommodation costs by taking this option.

If you are traveling with kids and you want to explore other places along the way and be very mobile, renting a car may be a good option. However, we only recommend renting a car if you have a bigger budget for your trip and you are qualified and comfortable driving in Vietnam.

Option 1: Hanoi to Sapa train (Vietnam Railways)

If you’re comfortable with travelling to Sapa using public transport, the most popular option is to take the overnight sleeper train from Hanoi .

Note that the train doesn’t go all the way to Sapa , but terminates at the closest railway station in Lao Cai. From there, you need to continue to Sapa by road.

There are pros and cons to taking the train. Overall, it’s a safe and reliable way to travel. Since you save on a night’s accommodation, it can also be budget-friendly.

I usually recommend the train to families since it’s an experience kids in particular seem to enjoy .

A train in Vietnam.

There are several trains from Hanoi to Sapa every night (plus a few day services), all operated by state-run Vietnam Railways .

Each train has multiple carriages: Some are normal Vietnam Railways carriages, while other (more luxe) carriages are operated by private companies (see the next section for more details).

The most basic and cheapest train tickets are for the regular Vietnam Railways carriages . This train is known as the Reunification Express .

Hanoi to Sapa train times

There are currently two trains to Lao Cai from Hanoi every night, the SP1 and SP3 . Additional services might be added during peak holiday periods.

  • SP1 departs Hanoi at 9.35pm and arrives in Lao Cai at 5.30am the next morning
  • SP3 departs Hanoi at 10pm and arrives in Lao Cai at 6am the next morning

⭐ ⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ 122 traveller reviews

This 2D1N Cultural Trekking & Homestay Experience with Ethos is one of the best-rated tours in Vietnam. Walk through the Sapa Valley, see the rice terraces up close, and spend the night with a local host family.

How to buy Sapa train tickets

Both SP trains have VIP cabins (soft beds; 2 berths per cabin), 1st class sleepers (soft beds; 4 berths per cabin) and 2nd class sleepers (hard beds; 6 berths per cabin). VIP/1st class tickets are still very affordable, so I recommend upgrading for a more comfortable journey.

Vietnam Railways now issues e-tickets , eliminating the need to print a paper ticket or voucher. This is the same whether you book direct or through an agent.

Buying tickets through 12Go Asia

I prefer to book tickets through an agent such as 12GoAsia . They charge a small additional fee, but they offer good customer support and secure payment – plus the 12Go website is much easier to use compared to the VR website.

Online ticket sales open 60 days in advance. Prices for Hanoi to Sapa are as follows:

  • VIP sleeper berth: From 566K VND per person
  • 1st class sleeper: From 446K VND per person
  • 2nd class sleeper: From 316K VND per person

Discounted child fares are available for kids aged 2-11 years. Infants under 24 months travel free.

Important: There are several train stations in Hanoi – make sure you book your tickets from Hanoi Railway Station (not Yen Vien or Gia Lam).

When you reserve multiple tickets, agents will try to arrange beds in the same carriage, but note that this can’t always be guaranteed (another reason I recommend booking well in advance).

After you book and pay online, you’ll receive an email receipt. 12Go Asia then confirms your reservation with the railway and sends a second email with your e-tickets and instructions for boarding the train attached. The whole process is very straightforward.

Buying tickets through Vietnam Railways

Another option is to buy sleeper or hard/soft seat tickets direct from Vietnam Railways. You can either use the official Vietnam Railways website (there is a fake site out there, so be careful), or buy tickets in person at the station in Hanoi.

Tickets are a touch cheaper when you purchase direct. Seat (bunk) selection is available when you use this website to book.

When you book tickets, you’ll notice there’s an option to include a bus transfer from Lao Cai to Sapa town for an extra 55,000 VND. There are more affordable options available, so I recommend organising this separately (see the next section).

Where to board the train to Sapa

Hanoi has several different train stations. Both SP1 and SP3 leave from Hanoi Railway Station in Van Mieu (not far from the Temple of Literature). See the exact location here on Google Maps .

If you hold Vietnam Railways-issued tickets, you should enter at the main A Station building on Le Duan Street . There is no need to check in – just show your e-ticket to the steward when boarding the train.

What is the Hanoi Sapa train like?

Many people opt for the train thinking there will be beautiful scenery along the way. The journey from Hanoi to Sapa does indeed pass through one of the most picturesque parts of Vietnam, but the train journey is at night, so in reality you don’t actually get to see much!

The trains themselves are basic but comfortable enough. It’s very noisy and bumpy as the train constantly shunts throughout the night. Don’t expect to get a full night’s sleep!

Linens are provided, but there is no dining cart so you should bring your own food (snacks and water can be purchased on board) plus other standard train travel essentials .

There is plenty of luggage space on the trains. Technically guests are limited to one 20kg bag each, but in my experience this rule is not strictly enforced.

How to get to Sapa from Lao Cai railway station

Remember: The Hanoi to Sapa train terminates in Lao Cai city, 35 kilometres (roughly 50-90 minutes by road) from Sapa.

When you arrive in Lao Cai and alight the train, prepare yourself for an onslaught! Taxi drivers and guides wait at the station for tourists and descend on you en masse as soon as you step onto the platform.

People congregate at the entrance to Lao Cai Railway Station near Sapa in Vietnam.

Do not book a train ticket to Lao Cai without also pre-organising your transport to Sapa. Trying to find a transfer on the fly is an absolute nightmare.

There are a couple of options for getting to Sapa, the cheapest being public bus #1 . You can find the bus stop near the train station car park, on the left as you exit the main gate. The buses are red and yellow coloured. You can’t miss them.

The first bus leaves Lao Cai at 5.30am . After that, they depart every 20-30 minutes throughout the day until around 4pm. The journey to Sapa by bus takes around 1.5 hours .

Tickets cost 40,000 VND and can either be purchased when you board or online in advance through Baolau (recommended for high season and holidays/weekends).

Alternatively, you can prearrange a private transfer to Sapa by car or minivan. The mountain road from Lao Cai to Sapa is very windy and quite precarious, so if you’re a nervous passenger or you suffer from motion sickness, I highly recommend a transfer over the public bus. It’s also faster, taking just 50-60 minutes.

Most hotels in Sapa can organise a transfer from Lao Cai station. Alternatively, you can reserve a seat on a minibus through Sapa O’Chau. Don’t risk hiring a taxi at the station – tourists are regularly ripped off on this route.

By the time you arrive in Sapa, it may still be too early to check into your hotel. Most of the cafes around the lake are open from 7.30am so you can grab a coffee and some pancakes while you wait.

The return trip: Sapa to Hanoi train

For the return trip, first take bus #2 (the same red and yellow public bus) from outside Sapa church back to Lao Cai railway station. Remember to give yourself ample time.

Buses run throughout the day. Buy tickets in Sapa or online through Baolau .

There is one nightly train from Lao Cai to Hanoi: the SP4, departing at 10.30pm and arriving in Hanoi at 5.25am.

12GoAsia offers VIP, 1st and 2nd class sleeper berths for the journey back to Hanoi. Prices are a few dollars cheaper for the return route.

Option 2: Laman Express Train (VIP Sleeper Train)

If you want the atmosphere of slow travelling to Sapa by train but you prefer an ‘upgraded’ experience, the VIP train could be a good option for you.

There are half a dozen private companies that run special carriages on the Hanoi-Sapa/Sapa-Hanoi train. These include Victoria Express, Sapaly Express, Livitrans Express, Fanxipan Express, and Pumpkin Express.

My preferred provider is Laman Express , which runs with the SP3 train (departing Hanoi at 10pm and arriving in Lao Cai at 6am the next morning). Reservations can be made online via 12GoAsia .

As well as nicer cabins (choose from private 2-person or 4-person berths), the Laman Express offers high-speed WIFI and snacks on-board, plus access to their lounges at both railway stations.

After you book and pay, you’ll receive detailed instructions by email regarding what time to arrive at the station and where to check in for the train.

Be sure to read these carefully as the procedure is different than regular Vietnam Railways ticket holders.

Inside a VIP train carriage in Vietnam.

Another option is the luxe Chapa Express . It also runs with the SP3, departing Hanoi at 10pm. Prices start from 44 USD including a ground transfer to Sapa from Lao Cai station.

Check prices and availability here on Viator .

Coming back to Hanoi, the Laman Express and Chapa Express leave Lao Cai Railway Station every night at 10.30pm. The price is the same, and tickets can be pre-purchased online via 12Go .

Option 3: Sapa tour from Hanoi

If you have limited time in Vietnam or you’re looking for an easy way to travel around Sapa, a guided tour from Hanoi is worth considering.

There are a range of 2 and 3-day itineraries available that focus on different interests (trekking, culture) and include transportation from Hanoi to Sapa and back.

Beautiful textiles for sale at a market near Sapa, Vietnam.

A major advantage of booking a guided tour is the inclusion of door-to-door transfers in a safe, comfortable vehicle with a professional driver at the wheel. Added benefits include a more specialised itinerary, and of course having a local guide to show you around and answer your questions.

Some tours (but not all) take you to smaller villages around Sapa and emphasise responsible and ethical interactions with local communities.

All in all, a Sapa tour from Hanoi is a budget-friendly, straightforward option. It’s particularly suitable for solo travellers.

How to book a Sapa tour

I strongly recommend booking your Sapa tour online rather than waiting until you get to Hanoi. There are lots of tour companies and vendors in Hanoi offering cheap Sapa trips, but the quality of these tours is questionable.

Of course it’s always possible to organise something on the fly, but if you pre-book, you can give yourself time to peruse the options and read the reviews.

I always use Viator to book tours in Vietnam. This is an aggregate website that brings together different itineraries from a range of independent and international companies.

You can read other travellers’ reviews, research the company to ensure they meet your expectations, and book and pay online through a secure system.

A beautiful road stretches out through rice fields and mountains in Sapa, Northern Vietnam.

Important things to look for in a Sapa tour

  • Group size: This is extremely important. The smaller the group, the more intimate the experience.
  • Inclusions/exclusions: Check if meals and entrance fees are included or not. Remember that if you’re on a tour, you’ll be expected to tip your guide (around 10-15%) and your driver if applicable.
  • Holiday surcharge: If you’re travelling to Vietnam over the Lunar New Year (Tet) period or for international New Year, note that most companies charge an extra holiday fee (up to 30% extra).
  • Transportation type: Some Sapa tours offer private transfers while others include bus or train tickets in the price.
  • Ethical tourism policies: If this is something that’s important to you, do your research before you book. Look for companies that work with local (Sapa) guides and drivers, keep their tour group sizes small, emphasise lesser-visited places, and/or have initiatives that give back to the local communities they visit. Ethos is the best-known ethical tourism operator in Sapa and has a great reputation. Their 2-day Sapa Trekking and Homestays Tour is one of the best out there.

Do you need travel insurance for Vietnam?

Remember: Sapa trekking tours and guided trips do not include insurance. Always take out a travel insurance policy before you travel. I recommend HeyMondo for affordable single-trip and annual coverage. Get 5% off your policy when you enquire using my link.

Independent tour companies

Sapa O’Chau and Ethos are two independent tourism providers in Sapa that are known for their responsible tourism policies. As mentioned, Ethos is the more reputable of the pair and has a great track-record of collaborating with communities and giving back.

Ethos offers trekking tours and homestays departing from Sapa, and can organise train or bus transfers from Hanoi on your behalf. More information and bookings here .

Option 4: Hanoi to Sapa bus (Sapa Express Bus)

If you prefer to travel during daylight hours, there are several coach buses from Hanoi to Sapa.

My preferred company for this route is Sapa Express Bus . It runs twice daily, departing Hanoi at 7am and 3pm and arriving in Sapa 5.5 hours later.

This is a large sleeper bus with fully reclining seats.

Hanoi to Sapa Express bus on a city road in Vietnam.

If your Hanoi accommodation is in the Old Quarter , free pick up is included.

A major advantage of choosing the bus over the train is that there’s no need to book a second transfer from Lao Cai. The bus goes all the way to Sapa, where it terminates at the Sapa Express Bus Station in the centre of town.

It’s a long journey, but there are two scheduled rest stops (roughly 10 minutes each) to use the bathroom and purchase drinks and snacks along the way.

How to buy tickets for the Sapa Express Bus

Tickets for the Sapa Express bus start from 400K VND per person and can be purchased online in advance through 12GoAsia .

Is the road to Sapa safe?

Travelling from Hanoi to Sapa by road, buses and cars take highway CT05. It’s fairly flat and straight all the way to Lao Cai before the final, windy portion of mountain road into Sapa.

Sapa Express drivers are professional and riding in these coach buses is generally safe. If you’re prone to motion sickness or you’re a nervous traveller, consider taking a van instead (see the next section for details).

The return trip: Sapa to Hanoi bus

Travelling the opposite way, the Sapa Express bus departs from the office in Sapa at 7am, 2pm and 3pm . Travel time is 6 hours . If there’s heavy traffic in the city, the journey might take a little longer – so I highly recommend booking an early bus if you’re on a time crunch.

Drop off at your Hanoi hotel is included in the price (Old Quarter only).

On the way back, the bus passes directly in front of Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport. If you’re trying to make a flight on the same day, it might be possible to get dropped off at the airport. You should ask at the time of booking.

Tickets cost 400K VND per person and can be purchased via 12GoAsia .

Option 5: Hanoi to Sapa limousine van

Green Lion runs shared and private limousine vans between Hanoi and Sapa. They are slightly more expensive than a coach – but as you can see, the vans are a lot more comfortable.

The vans are fast, getting you to Sapa in as little as 5.5 hours . If it’s within your budget, limousine van is my preferred way to travel from Hanoi to Sapa.

Inside a luxury van, with leather seats.

Green Lion vans depart from Hanoi in the morning at around 6.30am . The van features comfortable leather seats, WIFI, and USB charging ports. The ticket price includes water and a snack.

A second company, Sapa Express Limousine, has two vans daily: One departing Hanoi at 6.30am , and a second afternoon service departing Hanoi at 2.30pm .

Pick up from Old Quarter hotels is included in the ticket price. The drive takes 5.5 hours on average, including one or two short rest stops.

This is a door-to-door service and also includes drop off at your hotel in Sapa (provided it’s in the centre of town).

If you rent a private van, you can use the Sapa Express service to travel directly to Ta Van village, Su Pan village, or Topas Eco Lodge .

How to buy tickets for the Express Limousine

Tickets for the shared Express Limousine start from 25 USD per person one-way and are sold through Amazing Uncles, a reliable (yet strangely named!) tour agency in Vietnam. Enquire through their website .

Tickets for Green Lion vans start from 385K VND per person and are sold through 12GoAsia.

The return trip: Sapa to Hanoi limousine van

There are two vans back to Hanoi from Sapa departing on the same schedule (6.30am and 2.30pm daily).

Vans can stop at Noi Bai Airport on the way back to Hanoi on request.

Option 6: Hanoi to Sapa taxi

The final option is to take a private taxi to Sapa. This is the fastest and most comfortable way to travel, taking as little as 4.5 hours.

I recommend using 12GoAsia to pre-book a Sapa taxi and driver online. They accept reservations for a number of reputable companies, including Ouros and Dichung.

Prices start from 4,400K VND one-way for a sedan, or 4,600K VND for a 9-person van. If you’re travelling with a large family or group, this can work out much cheaper than VIP van or even the train.

Pick up is on demand, any time of day or night from anywhere in Hanoi or from the arrivals terminal at Noi Bai Airport. Upon arrival in Sapa, you’ll be taken all the way to your hotel. WIFI and AC are standard, and taxis have plentiful luggage space.

Final verdict: What is the best way to travel from Hanoi to Sapa?

I’ve done this trip several ways, by rail and by road. As a train lover it pains me to say it, but I recommend taking the bus or VIP van over the night train.

Taking the train in Vietnam is a cool experience, but there are much better routes elsewhere in the country (most notably the coastal leg of the Reunification Express to South Vietnam ). For me, the discomfort isn’t worth the price tag.

The biggest drawback is having to book another transfer to Sapa – the last thing you feel like doing after an overnight train ride is braving a windy mountain drive.

Overall, VIP van is much more convenient while still being very affordable.

Sapa travel FAQ

Is sapa worth visiting.

Sapa is known for two things: Trekking, and the vibrant ethnic minority communities that live in the valleys and mountains around the town. If you’re interested in multi-day hikes and/or learning more about Vietnam’s ethnic minority culture , Sapa should be on your radar.

Unfortunately, much like Halong Bay , Sapa has become a victim of its own popularity. Over-tourism has become a serious issue in recent years. If you plan to visit Sapa, it’s important to know that this is a very touristy destination. If you come in expecting an off-the-beaten-track experience , you’ll be sorely disappointed.

The scenery is beautiful – there’s no denying that – but most of Sapa’s problems have to do with the local communities who have been largely excluded from tourism development. There are villages that are sadly presented like exhibition displays for tourists to gawk at (I experienced this myself when I visited Bac Ha ). Popular Cat Cat village is another example.

In my opinion, Sapa is still worth visiting provided you know what you’re getting yourself into.

There are things you can do to improve your experience and avoid contributing to Sapa’s social and environmental problems. If you can get away from the city into the smaller villages, you’re more likely to have a positive, rewarding experience.

If you prefer something less touristy, there are some great Sapa alternatives in the north, including Ha Giang and Pu Luong . Both offer excellent hiking and village homestays.

How many days in Sapa?

The ideal amount of time to spend in Sapa is 2-3 nights. If you plan on trekking, you’ll need at least 2 full days in Sapa.

Depending on which method of transport you choose, getting to Sapa from Hanoi can be a time-consuming and energy draining process. I strongly recommend including some time in your itinerary for rest – e.g. set aside your first afternoon/evening for recovery.

Can I do a Sapa day trip from Hanoi?

While it is technically possible to visit Sapa as a day trip from Hanoi, it’s not advisable.

There are very few companies that offer this option, simply because the drive is so long. Even if you left Hanoi at 6am, you wouldn’t arrive in Sapa until after lunch. That would only give you a few hours to explore.

I strongly recommend an alternative day trip such as Ninh Binh (< 2 hours from Hanoi) or even Halong Bay (< 3 hours from Hanoi).

Is there a Hanoi to Sapa flight?

No – there are no flights between Hanoi and Sapa. The closest airport to Sapa is Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport. The only way to travel between the two destinations is by road or rail.

There are currently 6 different ways to travel between Hanoi and Sapa , as described above.

How far in advance should I buy my Sapa bus/train tickets?

Sapa is a very popular destination among both domestic and international tourists. It’s not at all unusual for train/bus tickets to sell out.

If you’re travelling during high season (November to January) or on a weekend, you should book your bus or train tickets as far in advance as possible (at least 4 weeks ahead of your travel date).

If your trip coincides with Vietnamese New Year (Tet) in February, know that the trains will be extra busy. There are additional services on holidays, but it’s still a good idea to book 6 weeks out.

In the section above, I’ve included links to buy tickets online. If your itinerary is set, I suggest booking tickets before you leave home so you don’t have to worry about making arrangements while you’re on the road.

Hello, I intend to spend 6nights in Hanoi with a 5yo and 2 elderly (mid 70s). Appreciate if you can give advice on any good tour which is suitable for elderly? Will they be suitable to go Sapa? And where to stay will be more ideal? Does the accommodation able to offer tour options which don’t need a lot of walking?

Thanks, Zann

Hi Zann – there are certainly options for shorter walks in Sapa. It is quite a long drive, though. Have you looked into Ninh Binh? It’s also very beautiful and close to Hanoi. I think the young person in your party would particularly enjoy the boat rides!

Can you let me know which software or apps do you use for creating these photos on Pinterest in the end of this page? Thanks!

Hi David – I use Canva Pro.

Traveling between Hanoi to Sapa is a common route for a lot of backpackers while in Vietnam. The north of Vietnam is completely different from the rest of the country and is a must-do while you are exploring this amazing place.

Being one of the main tourist hubs, many travelers find themselves in Hanoi during some stage of their trip. To escape the bustling city it is common for people to travel from Hanoi to Sapa.

Be aware getting from Hanoi to Sapa can take quite a lot of time due to being such a large distance apart, but trust me it is worth it.

Unfortunately, air travel is currently not an option. This means you will need to travel overland. However, before we get too ahead of ourselves we will need to figure out how exactly is the best way to travel from Hanoi to Sapa.

Hanoi To Sapa Distance

Whether you decide to travel to Sapa via road or train, the actual distance to get here will be around the same.

The two options follow a similar route up towards Sapa being around 315 kilometers in length directly from the northwest of Hanoi. The main thing that will sway you to a particular choice of either bus, train, or taxi will consist of budget, length of time, and comfort factor.

Sapa is located in the province of Lào Cai and the nearest city to it is called Lào Cai city.

You will see below this is where some of the transport options stop before you will need to take another mode of transport to complete your journey. Also, you may find yourself simply stopping for a bathroom break here as well.

Hanoi To Sa Pa Travel Time

Bus: the trip from Hanoi to Sapa takes approximately 5.5 to 6 hours .

Train : from Hanoi to Lao Cai takes 8 hours and 5 minutes . Lao Cai is the nearest railway station, 35 kilometers from Sapa town. From Lao Cai Train Station, it takes approximately an additional 65 minutes to reach Sapa.

Option 1: Mini Van From Hanoi To Sapa

Taking the minivan is another great way to travel from Hanoi to Sapa.

This is slightly a more expensive option than the bus, but some of these minivans are fancy AF. They are known as limousine vans. Think plush, lazy-boy-style seats.

One of the most popular companies to book with is called Eco Sapa Bus. You get 5 and a half hours of luxury where you can just relax in comfort for the whole time.

There are two services every day with the first at 7:30 am and the second at 3 pm. You will stop twice on this journey to use the restroom and buy some snacks.

Also included is pick up and drop off.

Other popular companies include GreenLion Bus and many more. However, make sure you check out reviews so you know what to expect and read the fine print so there are no surprises.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been lucky enough to travel in one of these vans. Though I am determined to change that!

Option 2: Train From Hanoi To Sapa

Taking the train is my favorite way to see Vietnam. There always seem to be incredible countryside or coastal views out the window.

I have actually taken the train completely from North to South. It was one of my favorite ways to explore this country, though it certainly isn’t the most budget-friendly on the wallet.

So is it actually worth taking the train from Hanoi to Sapa? Especially when it is at night time so all you can see is black out the windows?

What Is The Train Like

Now before we get too involved in learning about taking the train from Hanoi to Sapa you need to know there are actually two different types of trains you can book while in Vietnam. This is either the regular train or a luxury train.

The regular train is operated by Vietnam Railways. This is where you will find the more affordable tickets and what the majority of travelers and locals will book.

They have the option of hard or soft sleeper berths, as well as your general seats. Currently, Vietnam Railways operate this journey twice per day, with either the SP1 or SP3 train.

If you decide to book the normal train I highly recommend booking a 4-berth cabin over a 6-berth.

This is simply because the 4-berths are a lot more comfortable with more headroom and thicker mattresses. Also, you will have fewer cabin mates.

I have used the standard trains operated by Vietnam Railways throughout the country and honestly have not had any issues whatsoever. Though I certainly have heard of some horror stories *bugs*.

Luckily enough I have not experienced that on the trains, but unfortunately, buses are a whole other story (more on that below).

What Is The Luxury Train Like

In contrast to the regular train, as the name suggests, the luxury train is a lot nicer than the regular train.

Many different providers offer the luxury train experience. Some popular choices include ET-Pumpkin Express Train, Chapa Express Train, Orient Express, Victoria Express, Sapaly Express, Livitrans Express, Fanxipan Express, as well as a few more.

They all still operate as an overnight journey. The main difference here is the amenities and facilities you will; be provided with onboard.

You will find that your cabin is a lot nicer on board with actual pillows, snacks, and the never-important free Wifi.

Generally, depending on the station, you will also have access to the lounge beforehand for a more peaceful spot to relax and wait until boarding is ready.

Of course, it costs a little more than the regular train, though the exact price depends on the operator you decide to book with.

If you are interested in taking one of the luxury trains to Sapa I recommend checking out this video by Tim and Fin taking the Chapa Express:

Train Schedule From Hanoi To Sapa

Below is the train schedule from Hanoi to Sapa.

As you can see it really isn’t too much more for some of the luxury trains. Though in exchange you get a lot more amenities that will make your journey a lot more comfortable.

How To Book Tickets From Hanoi To Sapa

Luckily nowadays it is easy to buy tickets for the trains. Vietnam Railways accepts e-tickets which prevent the common stress of wondering where you can print that ticket you just purchased online.

However, before we get too into that you will need to decide what type of ticket you would like to purchase. Both of the SP trains offer a variety of cabin choices so you can pick the perfect option for you:

1st Class Sleeper : 4 berth cabin; soft beds and a mid-priced option. Staying in a 4 person cabin allows people to spread out without it feeling too cramped.

2nd Class Sleeper: hard wooden beds and 6 berth cabins. I would avoid booking unless you are on a super tight budget.

VIP Sleeper: 2-berth cabin; perfect for a couple or two friends traveling together and it has soft beds.

Buy Tickets Online

You can also purchase tickets online. However, be aware it can be a bit confusing as some websites still say you need to print out to ticket and swap it at the train station before your journey.

This stumped me when I first was sorting out my transport in Vietnam. I ended up booking with Baolau . Their website said I didn’t need to print off my ticket and instead just showed my ticket on my phone to the attendant on the train.

This is what I did throughout my travels in Vietnam and never once had an issue.

I often use 12.Go Asia as well, though I didn’t at the time because they weren’t set up for mobile tickets.

However this is now changed and you no longer have to print your tickets. Instead, simply purchase them and show them to the attendant on your phone. Easy as!

Being a third-party agent there is a small additional fee built into the ticket cost. Though this way is easier and cheaper than having to go to the train station!

Buy Tickets From Vietnam Railways

Another option is buying your tickets directly through Vietnam Railways.

You often can’t find the cheaper hard/soft seater tickets available on third-party websites as they are not a popular choice for backpackers in Vietnam .

However, if you are on a budget and keen on this option you can book directly with Vietnam Railways.

Just make sure you use the Vietnam Railways legit website as there are plenty of knockoffs floating around the internet.

Alternatively, you can also purchase tickets at the train station in Hanoi.

You will find the tickets are slightly cheaper when you purchase directly with Vietnam Railways. This is simply because there isn’t a third party involved in marking up their share for processing the ticket.

What Is The Train Like From Hanoi To Sapa

Depending on the type of ticket you book will decide how your journey will go.

Though, as I said earlier, for the most comfortable journey I recommend booking a 4-berth soft sleeper, or if you have the funds, one of the luxury trains. This will ensure you get a good night’s sleep ready for a day of trekking in Sapa .

Also, you will be traveling up a mountainous set of tracks. It isn’t a smooth journey. Instead, the train will constantly be rocking back and forth.

Hopefully, you’re like me and it puts you into a deep sleep. Though if you have issues with motion sickness this could be a problem for you.

The trains can also be pretty noisy as things bang with every bump in the track. Definitely bring headphones to drown out the noise.

Unfortunately, the trains are all at night, meaning you don’t get to appreciate that beautiful scenery out of the window. This is one of the most picturesque parts of the country.

Though don’t decide to take the bus simply for just this reason!

Lastly, there is no dining cart onboard the trains so it will be best to bring your own food onboard. Plenty of vendors in Hanoi will be more than happy to do a takeaway meal.

Be aware if you are traveling on the luxury train you will have snacks included.

Hanoi Train Station

Hanoi has a few different train stations. Though don’t stress about getting to the correct one as all trains to Sapa depart from Hanoi Railway Station in Van Mieu.

The is just an easy 20-minute walk or 10-minute taxi ride from the Old Quarter. I walked there to catch the train and it was straightforward. However, I recommend using Google Maps or Maps.Me to avoid getting lost.

If you do decide to taxi this will only set you back a couple of dollars.

Hanoi Railway Station is a huge building and can be a bit overwhelming. Once you arrive at the station entrance on the Western side.

This is the platform on which the trains from Hanoi to Sapa depart. Though no worries if you cannot find it. Just enter the main door and check the board for which platform your train departs.

If you are traveling with Vietnam Railways on their SP1 or SP3 train then you don’t need to check in on arrival. Just head straight to the train and show your e-ticket.

Getting From Lao Cai Train Station To Sapa

The main thing to remember when booking the train from Hanoi to Sapa is that the journey finishes in Lao Cai rather than Sapa.

This means you will need to take some sort of transport for the remainder to Sapa town.

The distance from Lao Cai to Sapa is 35 kilometers. This will take you around 50 to 90 minutes to travel to Sapa depending on whether you book a minivan or a bus. There is more on that below.

It is easy enough to book your transport online at Baolau or 12.Go Asia in advance or even through the accommodation you are staying at in Sapa. They will always be more than happy to organize this for you.

Just a word of caution, it is highly recommended to prebook your transport from Lao Cai to Sapa .

The taxi drivers here are ruthless and there is nothing more profitable than a stranded traveler stuck in a random city while it’s dark.

You will be swarmed as soon as you get off the train which can be a bit overwhelming.

Lao Cai To Sapa By Mini Van

One of the most popular ways to travel from Lao Cai to Sapa is my minivan.

The easiest way to book this is via Baolau or 12.Go Asia even through the accommodation in Sapa. Just don’t wait until you arrive at the train station because this route is known for ripping off travelers.

Also just be aware that this road isn’t for the faint-hearted. It is very windy and honestly quite precarious. Therefore if you are like me and suffer from motion sickness you may want to have some medication.

Nevertheless, you will be better off taking a minivan than a bus.

The roads here can actually be pretty dangerous as well. Especially such a big bus navigating tight corners.

Another plus is that it is a lot quicker than taking the public bus since it should just be an hour-long journey.

Lao Cai To Sapa By Public Bus

If you are on a budget then you may find taking the public bus from Lao Cai to Sapa is the best option for you.

The cheapest choice is taking public bus #1. The bus stop is located near the train station car park, on the left side as you exit the main gate.

The first bus departs Lao Cai at 5:50 am and then every 20 to 30 minutes throughout the day. They are red and yellow colored so they really can’t be missed.

Tickets cost around $1.30 / 30,000VND and can be purchased on board. You can expect the public bus journey from Lao Cai to Sapa to take around an hour and a half so get comfortable.

Option 3: Private Taxi From Hanoi To Sapa

If you have a bit more money to spend why not book a private taxi from Hanoi to Sapa?

No doubt this will be the fastest and most comfortable journey you could take. It may even take you less than 5 hours if you don’t do any stops!

The easiest way to prebook your private taxi is online with 12.Go Asia .

They have a variety of companies on offer who can take you the distance. Prices start from $170.00 for a 9 person van one way.

This is the perfect option if you are traveling as a family or a large group. If you have enough people to fill it up it can actually work out pretty dam cheap.

The best part is that they will work around your plans. This means they will pick you up day or night and from anywhere in the city.

Once arriving in Sapa you will also be dropped off at your hotel rather than just on the side of the road.

Option 4: Bus From Hanoi To Sapa

If you are on more of a budget then you may find yourself leaning towards taking a bus from Hanoi to Sapa.

This total journey takes around 6 hours which honestly isn’t too painful. Personally, I find anything over 8 hours really makes you question your life choices when it comes to long-distance bus journeys.

Plus it is a direct route so there is no need to stop in Lao Cai like the train.

As someone who has taken the bus from Hanoi to Sapa let me just say, pick your bus company wisely.

Transport companies in Vietnam vary greatly and even though your accommodation recommends it, that doesn’t mean it is just a good choice. This just means they are likely getting some sort of commission from it.

I will get into all the details of this and my “super fun” bus journeys from Hanoi to Sapa and return. Just take my advice and don’t repeat my mistakes.

bus from hanoi to sapa

Is Taking A Bus Safe

Taking the bus from Hanoi to Sapa is relatively safe. I mean I have done this journey and I am still here to tell the story.

Anyway, the majority of the ride is on the highway CT05. This is a multiple-lane straight and smooth highway stretching from Hanoi the majority of the way up until you reach Lao Cai where the turn-off to Sapa is located.

It is super easy, and even if you get motion-sick, this is a super smooth ride.

However once you reach this turn off to Sapa is where things really start to get interesting.

Here the road becomes mountainous and the sides seem to drop away next to you. It truly isn’t for the faint-hearted and I basically had my eyes shut the whole time due to motion sickness here.

Side note, take some medication if you are like me and struggle with this.

Make sure you book the bus so you arrive in Sapa during daylight. Taking long journey buses in Vietnam during the day is fine.

Though at night things can get pretty dangerous.

First of all driving at night is a lot more difficult generally, though add on one tired and overworked driver and that is not a good combination.

Plus you don’t want to be wandering around a brand new town in the pitch dark.

Bus vs Tourist Bus

Now let’s get into the difference between the type of buses available when you are traveling around Vietnam. Your general regular bus is more to Vietnamese standards, which is fine in some regards.

Though I was either super unlucky or simply booked with two different crappy companies. More on my experience a bit further down.

Anyway, I found your typical Vietnamese buses to simply be a bit painful. The lay-flat seats were not tall enough for us Westerners, and it was far from clean.

These buses were booked by our accommodation providers in both Hanoi and Sapa on our return journey.

The hostel in Hanoi we booked with was one of the best-rated in the city! So I am surprised they offer subpar transport arrangements.

Anyway, after that, we vouched to book our own buses, only when there was no train, and we would do plenty of research in advance.

From there onwards we used The Sinh Tourist . Be aware there are plenty of fake websites and fake stores pretending to be this company.

Luckily we didn’t have a single issue with them. Their flat seats were even more comfortable being slightly longer for us tall foreigners.

You do pay a premium to book with them. But unfortunately, they do not operate on the Hanoi to Sapa route.

Though in saying that I have heard good things about the Green Sapa Bus and Goodmorning Sapa. Anyway just do your research in advance and book online through a platform like Baolau or 12.Go Asia where you can read reviews.

Sleeper vs Seater Bus

Now I don’t know if you have taken a bus in Vietnam before, but in case you have not let’s go over the sleeper vs seater bus situation as they are unlike anything else in Southeast Asia.

The buses in Vietnam are honestly not like any I have seen elsewhere in the world. With three split rows of chairs stacked two tall, it certainly is an interesting sight the first time you lay your eyes on them.

Honestly, at first glance, they looked super comfortable and I was excited. I mean the worst part of being stuck in a long bus is having to awkwardly stretch around in the chair and the hours you spend trying to get comfortable.

I thought this would be the easiest 6-hour journey. Though how wrong I was.

See my problem is I am tall. Sure I am not super tall, just reaching 180cm. Though I am tall enough I need to awkwardly contort my body to fit my feet into those little boxes.

Honestly, if you are shorter than 165cm you should be fine in the typical sleeper-style bus. Though any taller it will be one uncomfortable journey.

Not sure if this is a bonus or not. But at the back of the buses, there is a huge lay-flat area. Imagine your large row on the back of the bus is converted into a huge bed. This is where they chucked us, tall people.

Anyway, your regular seater bus is exactly that, just like the buses you are likely to have in your home country. I much prefer just a simple regular bus. However, you will need to shop around to find one of these for longer journeys as they are not the norm.

Bus Schedule From Hanoi To Sapa

Below is the bus schedule departing Hanoi and arriving in Sapa.

Be aware there are so many companies you can choose from and this is just a small selection of the best few.

As you can see the majority of the bus companies provide free pick up in the old quarter. From here you will be transported to the bus.

The 6-hour journey is pretty easy until you get to the Sapa turn-off when things get windy. Though before then you will be provided with two rest stops to use the bathroom and purchase food.

How To Book Tickets

It is super easy to book your bus from Hanoi to Sapa. However, I recommend booking it online via Baolau or 12.Go Asia where you can read reviews rather than going through your accommodation or a travel agency.

This is simply because they are likely to book you on whatever options get them the most commission.

Anyway by booking with Baolau or 12.Go Asia you can see what other travelers have said about the journey with particular companies.

Then you can just book your ticket through their website and they will email you a copy. It’s super easy!

My Experience Taking The Bus From Hanoi To Sapa

Now let’s get into the fun stuff, my experience taking the bus from Hanoi to Sapa.

Honestly, my biggest struggle on the way to Sapa was getting comfortable on those sleeper seats that are not made for people my length. It was super cramped and I breathed a sigh of relief every time we pulled in for a rest stop.

We moved down the back for the remainder of the journey. The back was basically just like a huge bed, that’s the best I could explain it and it ended up being us and a few other tall foreigners who couldn’t get comfortable.

Though I don’t know whether the sleeper-style seats were worse than spooning some randoms in the back of the bus. At least the latter was slightly more comfortable.

Now my return journey from Sapa back to Hanoi was even worse than this and I know what you are thinking, surely not. But alas, it was.

So we weren’t playing around this time and headed straight down to the back of the bus to the big bed seat. There is no way I am spending even just a couple of hours squished in those little compartments.

Everything was going fine and well for a while. That was unless the bus vibrations seemed to have awoken a few “mates”.

Next thing I know bugs are crawling over me, over everything. For each one I squish or flick away, another few seem to appear.

At our first break stop, I must’ve sprinted off that bus with my day bag. Hell no that was not okay.

I decided the grossness of this situation triumphed over the uncomfortableness of the sleeper seats so I tried to sit as far away as possible from the back where we were before.

The problem is the bugs suddenly start appearing everywhere and I sit back and watch them crawling on the people around me. All while this is going on I am simply wondering how many are crawling on me right now.

Unfortunately, this story doesn’t have a happy ending. Well, I guess you could say at least they didn’t infest my luggage, but that’s as good as it got.

Where Does The Bus Drop You Off

Depending on which bus company you book will affect where you are dropped off in Sapa.

A few even drop passengers outside Sapa Center! This means you still need to take a taxi from there to your accommodation, which is super inconvenient.

The majority of reputable companies will drop you off along the lakeside, from here it is just a short stroll into the center of town depending on where you are staying.

How Far In Advance Do I Need To Book Tickets?

I recommend you book tickets in advance to ensure you can travel with a reputable, clean, and safe company. Also, make sure to look at fellow travelers’ reviews.

You should try for at least a week in advance to be safe. Though if you are not worried about this then you can probably just book the day before.

The only time this advice isn’t valid is during the high season between November to January, weekends, and especially on the Vietnamese New Year (Tet). During these times you will want to book at least 4 weeks in advance and expect a very full bus, train, or minivan.

When in Southeast Asia I will book through Baolau or 12.Go Asia . It is perfect for that peace of mind knowing everything is booked in, even when you haven’t arrived in the country yet!

Where To Stay In Sapa?

Sapa town is full of affordable and more luxurious accommodation options. From comfortable guesthouses to sparkling brand new hotels it all comes down to your budget and what you are willing to spend.

For the most part, the township is nice and compact making it easy to travel everywhere on foot.

I also recommend while you are in Sapa to do a homestay experience. This is where you will live alongside a local family.

You can eat what they eat, see the incredible countryside, and explore to your heart’s content. They seem to be cheaper than the hotels in the main town, though they will be a lot more basic.

Our homestay had limited electricity which meant evenings cuddled up around the fire eating warm sugarcane. However, it was a special experience and one of our highlights visiting Sapa.

Things To Do In Sapa

Sapa is a nature lovers paradise! There are so many things to do here that will keep you busy throughout your stay.

Trekking Tour

Trekking tours in Sapa are surprisingly affordable costing less than $20.00 for the day.

You will be able to visit ethnic minority villages, which one depends on exactly what tour you book. However, your guides will be able to take you through the beautiful rice terraces and to some of the most picturesque spots.

You will be given plenty of opportunities to interact with the local villagers and learn about their way of life.

Self-Guided Hike

If you want to trek Sapa without a guide I first highly recommend you download Maps.Me or Google Maps on your phone. On it, you will be able to get an offline version of a map of Sapa, perfect if you do not have a local sim card.

If you are traveling during a part of the year with good weather then you can likely do a variety of hikes. The tracks will be maintained and dry so you should have no problem getting around.

From Sapa, you can either trek to Cat Cat Village and Sin Chai which should take about half a day, or you can do to Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai, and Ta Van.

Homestay Experience

One of the best things to do in Sapa, and what I highly recommend is to do a Homestay experience.

There are so many places to choose from, so you should definitely do some research as to which village you would like to stay in.

The easiest way to book your Homestay in Sapa is through Booking.com. This is what I used to book my homestay making it a hassle-free experience.

Silver Waterfall

One of the most famous waterfalls in Sapa is called Silver Waterfalls. Over 200 meters in height the water gushes down with force.

There is also Love Waterfall located a short walk away which is steeped in local legend.
