What travellers are saying.

  • Darwin N 1 contribution 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Perfect trip. I don’t often leave reviews, but Sam was the best helicopter pilot and guide we have ever had (prepped well by Cookie!) It was the smoothest flight and best info, friendly and personal but professional. The park viewed from above was incredible. She even took a few extra minutes to show us some beautiful waterfalls. Definitely a memorable five star experience all around. Soar With Us in the Hawaiian Skies!

I took my son for a holiday gift and was a bit nervous, but the ride was very smooth and actually calming. It was an enjoyable ride and loved seeing all the breathtaking views from the a much different vantage point. It was an incredible experience that we’ll always remember.

The ground crew were efficient and helpful, our pilot was highly experienced, professional and very informative about the island, as well as being very entertaining. It was a great tour and a great experience - highly recommended.

Sunshine helicopters did an amazing job of flying our family into the Waimea canyon, thru the waterfalls and around the Napali coast. Our pilot was extremely skilled and a great guide of the sights! The flight was smooth and comfortable but we were in awe and amazement of the scenery.

So thankful for my daughter who read up about helicopter tours on our first visit to Kauai. No other way to experience the untouched beauty of this island. Happy with sunshine helicopters and enjoyed Steve, our pilot. Funny and informative, made the trip special! No regrets and got spectacular pictures!

A helicopter tour is a must on Kaua'i if you want to really see the island. Sunshine staff was great from the gals at the sign in, to the safety briefing and ride to the airport, and then the flight itself. We opted for the 1st class flight on the whisper helicopter and it was worth the small difference in price to sit in the two front seats for the unobstructed views. Our pilot, Jed, was great and provided tons of information about the island. This was one of the highlights of our trip.

Most excellent experience even on a very rainy day across Kauai. Don't let the rain stop you from going on the tour. Despite the rain, we were able to get a very clear view of every point on the island and the extra rain only added to the amount of waterfalls that were able to be seen. Our pilot and ground staff were all great. Highly recommend Sunshine Helicopters in Lihue.

My son and I sat up front in the Whisper Star, the experience was incredible! Jaw dropping, unreal beauty. Everyone I spoke to and met at Sunshine was friendly and professional. Jed, the pilot, is competent and pleasant. We had a great time and got the video. Unreal beauty on Kauai.

The helicopter tour was amazing - we saw all the best known spots and also some where no one has ever walked before. Our pilot made sure we also got some adrenaline rush, but just the right amount! He also provided us with great explanation of what we were seeing and what to look out for. Would definitely recommend!

This excursion was unbelievable! Could not have been any better. All staff were exceptional. In over 55 years of travel this was one of the best “adventures “ I’ve ever experienced

Latest reviews of Volcano Air Flights & Tours

I ask others to go with me, and get... 'is it a big helicopter? must be stable' 'need a seat in the middle up front or I'll barf' 'doors off, are you nutz?' Don't let them ruin it for you. Small copter with doo ... more rs off is the full woohooo. The ride is smooth and stable enough. The view out the open door is wondrous. Accept nothing less. Watch a video in the comfort of your couch or get the whole experience.

Helicopter tour is always a wonderful experience

I’ve done this more than 5 times and every trip is different and wonderful. Great way to see more of the island without driving. Love all of the employees. It’s a great experience. Last time in March 2022 we took three g ... more randsons and son in law. Very fun trip. They have a fantastic time. This time I took a friend who had never been to island. We again had a fabulous trip. Thank you ❣️

Clear Skies!

We got a great morning, very clear skies and gorgeous views of the volc nat park!

Great Views!

Awesome to get to see the volcano from above to understand it much different then walking through

Professional

Great trip with Tyler being our pilot. Not only was he a great pilot he was very knowledgable about the Big Island and about things a vacationer would not know. Saw many whales and spinner dolphins.. Circle Island tou ... more r was a great experience! Support staff was great and gave us all the information needed to make the trip great, but also safe!

A great flight

Since we did this the day before leaving, it was really fun to see lots of places we'd visited on the ground from the air, and to get a better view of crater road through the park. The kids loved having the headsets and ... more microphones, and asked lots of questions. The pilot was very patient with them and had taken the trouble to learn their names and really interact with them. He also accepted requests for minor deviations from his flight plan to see particular things, flying into clouds so that we could get a better view of a rainbow. They also take video of the whole trip, and we wound up paying for that too since it seemed reasonably priced compared with the cost of the overall experience.

Tourists smiling on a tour through the Big Island of Hawaii Rainforrest

Everyone who visits Hawaii Volcanoes National Park wants to see lava.  You go there hoping to see lava fountaining into the air like on a National Geographic magazine.

Sorry to tell you, most visitors do not see lava.

Unlikely lava on a volcano tour

Here’s why: Lava is dangerous. As soon as lava is fountaining or flowing in a certain area, Hawaii Civil Defense determines if it is safe to allow people near it.  Usually it is not safe and the area is closed off.

How to see lava on a volcano tour

The best way to be sure you will see lava is to take a helicopter volcano tour. You will see it from hundreds of feet away, but it is still magnificent.

The chances of seeing lava from a helicopter are very high, but not guaranteed. Volcanoes are extremely unpredictable. Volcanic activity changes every day. The lava flow moves and the surface cools.

Do not make the mistake of going on a volcano tour to see lava. There are so many other reasons to go on a volcano tour. Our volcanoes have an amazing history, cultural significance, biological uniqueness, geological wonder, and a beauty like no other place in the world.

People who go just to see lava and don’t see it are disappointed.  People who go to appreciate everything else about the volcano enjoy themselves. If you do see lava on a volcano tour, it is a bonus and you are a lucky one.

You want a quick answer? Sorry, the answer is constantly changing.

As we mention all over this site, the volcano is active. That means that it is moving and hard to pin down. You might see photos from a friend who saw lava flowing into the ocean a month ago, but now it is nowhere to be seen.

This is why a  volcano tour  is the best way to view the volcanoes. Tours will take you to see the sights in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Then the guide will use his contacts to find where you have the best chance of seeing lava.

Sometimes it is best viewed from inside the National Park. Sometimes it is by the shore in Kalapana. Sometimes it can only be seen from helicopters. Some days you can’t see lava anywhere you look.

The key to an enjoyable visit to the Big Island volcanoes is to go for the volcanoes and consider any sighting of lava as a bonus. If you’re whole purpose is to see lava, you could be setting yourself up for disappointment.

If you insist that lava is your focus, then a  helicopter tour  has the best chance of seeing lava. The pilots search for lava and communicate where the sighting is the best.  When you get close, you can actually feel the heat from inside the helicopter.

Five different Volcanoes are on the Big Island of Hawaii:

  • Kilauea volcano

Mauna Kea Summit

Mauna Kea Volcano Summit. 13,796 ft. Photo https://flic.kr/p/4h5JWS

Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in Hawaii. It is also the tallest sea mountain in the world. From it’s base at the bottom of the ocean floor it is 33,000 feet taller than Mount Everest.  Mauna Kea hasn’t erupted for thousands of years, but is still considered dormant and could erupt again.

Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on earth in terms of volume.

Kilauea is the volcano that most visit us to see.  It is the most active volcano in the world. It began erupting in 1983 and continues to erupt today.

Vog is volcanic fog. It is similar to smog in that it is dirty with particles that are not in typical fog.

Vog is formed when gases from the erupting volcano get into the air, mix with sunlight, oxygen and moisture.

Like smog, vog is not healthy for humans, plants or animals. Many people living near Kilaeau, experience headaches and respitory issues from vog.

Visitors on our tours will see and breath vog, but we rarely have visitors who complain of health issues as a result. Generally, complaints come more often from prolonged exposure by those living near the volcano.

Nevertheless, we encourage all visitors to pay attention to their bodies and take the following precautions:

  • Drink lots of fluids
  • Don’t overexert
  • Don’t smoke

Does vog smell like sulfer? A little bit.

Hawaii Volcanoes FAQs

As of 2023, there are 6 Hawaii volcanoes that are considered active. And the Big Island of Hawaii is home to 4 out of those 6. The active volcanoes on the Big Island include Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai. The remaining active volcano is Haleakala on Maui. There is also a volcano off of Big Island’s coast that is underwater too!

Unless the volcanoes are actively erupting, you will not be able to see lava in Hawaii. Kilauea last erupted in December 2020.

While you won’t die if you quickly touch the lava, you will definitely get a horrible burn. I definitely don’t recommend it!

It depends on traffic, but it usually takes about 2 hours if you don’t make any stops. There are a lot of cool places to see along the drive from Kona, so I suggest planning for 3-4 hours to take in some sights along the way.

Usually, the best way to see the volcano in Big Island is to go on a Hawaii volcano tour! You can also enjoy some self-guided tours if you prefer to go at your own pace to view these active volcanoes.

The best volcano tours take you to see the Kilauea volcano and help you to explore Volcanoes National Park. There are even some that take you to some black sand beaches and take you on a day trip all around the island of Hawaii.

If you want to see the red, hot lava glow, then you will want to go very early in the morning or after it gets dark under the night sky. However, there are plenty of other awesome things to explore at the Big Island volcanoes, so you can visit any time you want!

Where to Stay in Volcano Hawaii

Now that you know what to do at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, let’s talk about accommodations. There are tons of options for places to stay in Volcano Hawaii for all price points.

Unless you want to go camping, the only place to stay inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Volcano House Hotel . It’s a historic Big Island hotel that is super convenient for exploring the park. And it’s great for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with kids !

Otherwise, your best bet is to stay at a vacation rental in Volcano Village. Some of my top picks include Hale Sweet Hale (featured on HGTV), At the Crater’s Edge , and Volcano Hideaway Hale (also seen on HGTV).

The 11 Most Active Volcanoes in the World

The 11 Most Active Volcanoes in the World

Volcanoes: dangerous, exciting, mesmerising. No matter what adjective you’d use to describe them, volcanic eruptions are a constant reminder of how alive our planet is. Some go centuries without erupting while others are much more regular and predictable. They’re the perfect example of nature’s unrelenting power and beauty. From Europe and Asia, to Africa and Central America, we’ve compiled a list of the 11 most active volcanoes in the world.

What is an Active Volcano?

A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust which expels material from within the Earth’s mantle. A volcano is deemed active when there is some kind of current activity; whether that’s frequent eruptions, large explosions or gas emissions. Those that solely emit gases, despite technically being active, are also called dormant.

Perhaps most people think of glowing lava spurting out of volcanoes when they think of an eruption. However, volcanoes also release ash, rocks and various gases. Therefore, all volcanoes and volcanic eruptions are different!

The World’s Most Active Volcanoes

  • Kīlauea, Hawaii’s most active volcano
  • Etna, one of Italy’s most famous volcanoes
  • Osorno Volcano, South America’s Mount Fuji
  • Nyiragongo, an enormous volcano almost 3,500 metres tall
  • Stromboli, a real spectacle
  • Volcán de Fuego and its links with a Spanish Explorer
  • Geldingadalur and Iceland’s continuous volcanic activity
  • Mount Yasur, the most accessible active volcano in the world
  • Cumbre Vieja Natural Park and the eruption of La Palma
  • Colima, one of Mexico’s most active volcanoes
  • Sakurajima, a real icon of Japan

1. Kīlauea, Hawaii’s Most Active Volcano

Firstly, we’re headed for Hawaii. Located in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Kīlauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. At 1,247 metres (4,090 feet) tall, this volcano has been in a state of eruption countless times since records began at the end of the 19th century.

A woman with an orange backpack and a man next to her crouch down taking photos close to slow-running glowing lava

This area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, thanks to the relatively calm nature of Hawaii’s volcanoes, it’s become an important tourist attraction. Lava flow here is fairly slow, meaning that tourists can safely get close to take photos.

You should join us on a tour of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and experience these volcanoes and the volcanic landscape for yourself! If you want a more complete day trip, including a flight from Honolulu to the Park plus a 45-minute helicopter ride over the volcano, you can opt for this Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park Day Trip . Hawaii and its many active volcanoes await!

2. Etna, One of Italy’s Most Famous Volcanoes

1971, 1981, 1991, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2012, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022… These are some of the years when Etna has most recently erupted. Some were much less fierce than others, while others have been much more violent and aggressive. Regardless, this volcano in the east of Sicily is one of the most active in the world.

A night view of Mount Etna eruption, emitting a fountain of gold and red lava, the nearby city lights visible in the distance

Learn more about this impressive active volcano on this exciting Mount Etna Historic Tour , or explore the volcano site on this Hiking Tour of Etna . Don’t fancy walking? Then this Mount Etna Jeep Tour with Lunch is perfect! If you’re in Catania, Messia or Giardini Naxos, you can’t miss a trip to Mount Etna.

3. Osorno Volcano, South America’s Mount Fuji

Between the provinces of Osorno and Llanquihue, in the region of Lakes in Chile, you can find Osorno Volcano. Between the years of 1575 and 1869, 11 eruptions have been recorded, making it one of the most active volcanoes in the Andes. Material such as basalt, andesite and magma created by the explosions are scattered around the province of Llanquihue, as well as All Saint’s Lake.

Its snowy peak makes it a local symbol, towering above the surrounding countryside. Some people even liken it to Japan’s famous Mount Fuji! If you’re planning a trip to Chile, don’t miss out on a day trip to Osorno Volcano from Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas !

4. Nyiragongo, An Enormous Volcano almost 3,500 metres tall

The Democratic Republic of Congo is also home to one of the most active volcanoes in the world. At 3,470 metres (11,385 feet) above sea level, Nyiragongo lies in Virunga National Park. This African volcano is famous for its huge lava lake, an enormous magma basin that’s approximately 230 metres (755 feet) wide in diameter.

A glowing lava lake in the crater of Nyiragongo, emitted white steam

While the work of volcanologists has been difficult due to continuous wars in the area, it’s believed that this volcano’s level of danger is increasing and that it will reach its peak between 2024 and 2027. So, if you love volcanoes, this is definitely one to have on your watch list over the next few years!

5. Stromboli, A Real Spectacle

Although we’ve already spoken about one of Italy’s active volcanoes, there’s another worth mentioning. Stromboli is a small volcanic island in the south of Italy. Here, you can find a stunning active volcano that has become a huge tourist attraction in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Stromboli at night, with a huge lava fountain spirting from its mouth and lava trickling down the sides: one of the most active volcanoes in the world

From the nearby cities of Lipari, Messina and Milazzo, you can catch a boat that will take you around the island. We recommend visiting at night, when you can admire the glowing lava fountains spouting from the mouth of the volcano and trickling down the slopes. This is known as Sciara del Fuoco. It’s such a stunning spectacle! The best way to witness this spectacle is on this Stromboli and Panarea Tour .

6. Volcán de Fuego and its Links with a Spanish Explorer

One of the most active volcanoes in the world is found in the south of Guatemala. This volcano experiences continuous violent eruptions. In fact, according to some documents from the 16th century, it’s believed that the Spanish explorer Pedro de Alvarado saw one of these eruptions around the year 1524.

A cone shaped volcano emitting grey smoke from its peak and surrounded by white clouds

According to historical records, this volcano has erupted around 20 times since, with the most recent being in 2018. However, every 20 minutes or so, it shoots out small amounts of grey ash and firey red lava, creating a stunning spectacle for visitors. Crazy right? Without a doubt, it’s one of the most active volcanoes in Central America.

7. Geldingadalur and Iceland’s Continuous Volcanic Activity

Iceland is one of the first countries we think of when we’re talking about volcanoes. It’s not nicknamed the Land of Fire and Ice for no reason! Who doesn’t remember the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010? Its smoke and ash caused airspace to be closed over a huge area of northern Europe for days. Nonetheless, there are many examples of other fascinating volcanic eruptions in Iceland.

Snowy mountains near the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland, which is emitting bright orange lava

The Geldingadalur Valley is famous for its gushing crater despite not being an extremely violent volcano. In fact, it’s an area of special interest for volcanologists, as its eruption in 2021 was the first magma emission on the Reykjanes peninsula in almost 800 years. This has since been described as the start of a new era of volcanic activity in the peninsula, as several eruptions of different sizes and strengths have followed in recent years and months. Therefore, this is another area to keep your eye on if you fancy witnessing a volcanic eruption up close in the years to come!

If you’re in Iceland and want to learn more about the country’s incredible volcanic activity, the LAVA centre is a must. Experience simulations of volcanic eruptions and see real footage of past eruptions with your LAVA centre ticket . Want to experience a volcanic site up close and personal? Then, this tour of the Raufarholshellir Lava Tunnel is a must!

8. Monte Yasur, The Most Accessible Active Volcano in The World

Next, we’re travelling to Vanuatu, in Oceania, a country formed of many tiny islands. One such island is Tanna, where you can find Mount Yasur. This volcano has risen to fame as the world’s most accessible active volcano. This huge volcano, at 361 metres (1,185 feet), is one of the most widely studied in the world. Discover why!

A woman in sports clothes looking at an active volcano at night

Due to its popularity, the local government has created a series of alerts to advise visitors when the best time to visit this volcano is. Many tourists flock here to watch magma explode from inside the earth. Incredible, right?

9. Cumbre Vieja Natural Park and the Eruption of La Palma

The Canary Islands were formed by thousands of years of volcanic activity, with the eastern islands being older than those in the west. Therefore, La Palma in particular, or Cumbre Vieja Natural Park, is one of Spain’s most active volcanic spots.

A close-up of molten lava, black and orange, from one of the most active volcanoes in the world

The eruption in September 2021 came 50 years after the eruption of Teneguía, also located in the Cumbre Vieja mountain range. This proves that the island of La Palma is still very much alive beneath the surface. Moreover, the solidified lava flows from both eruptions formed a very unique landscape, typical of this volcanic archipelago.

If you want to explore this area and learn all about the most recent eruptions on La Palma, join us on this Tajogaite Volcano Day Trip . Similarly, the nearby island of Lanzarote is also full of evidence of past volcanic activity. Why not enjoy a Volcano Hike in Timanfaya National Park to discover extinct craters and fascinating lava tunnels? There’s much more to Spain than just sun, sea and sand!

10. Colima Volcano, One of The Most Active in Mexico

Mexico is also a land of volcanoes. Colima, reaching 4,000 metres (13,120 feet) in altitude, is a clear example of this. In addition to the lava explosions that have occurred in recent years, this volcano’s activity includes the emission of columns of smoke and ash. In fact, this crater is known as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Latin America.

View of the peak of Colima emitting grey clouds of gases in Mexico

Popocatepetl Volcano is another super active volcano in Mexico, having most recently erupted in December 2018. It’s also the second-highest peak in the country and the second-highest volcano in North America. Fancy a visit? Explore the  Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes on this fantastic tour.

11. Sakurajima, An Icon of Japan

Finally, we head to Japan. Sakurajima, located opposite the city of Kagoshima, is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. In recent years, this volcano in Japan has erupted thousands of times. Although during times of peak activity, this area is closed to tourists and locals are moved to avoid accidents, when it’s less active, you can visit this spot and enjoy hiking in the area.

A grey cloud coming from the peak of one of the most active volcanoes in the world, seen from the sea

Until 1914, this volcano was on a totally isolated island. That year’s eruption caused the island to join with Kyusha, creating the Peninsula of Osumi we find today. This is yet another example of how the world’s most active volcanoes are totally unpredictable and have huge impacts on the world in which we live.

Now you’ve learnt a bit about some of the most active volcanoes in the world, we’re sure you’re itching to travel and visit some of them. Don’t forget to check out what activities, tours and transfers we offer at Civitatis to make sure you make the most of your trip!
