icelandic pony tours

A dream I didn't know I had

Absolutely wonderful 2-hour short ride. My mother and I are both advanced riders and were lucky enough to have a private ride (the others who booked on didn’t turn up!) with Eva, our guide. She was wonderful and our ponies were even better. Can’t recommend this experience enough!

Absolute highlight!

We did this tour at the end of our 5-day-trip in Iceland and it turned out to be the highlight of our trip. The tour guides were very caring, committed, professional and friendly (the friendliest people we talked to in a week!). The scenery was amazing, the horses were funny and warm-hearted. Loved it!

During our 5 night stay this was the best activity we had during this stay. Even though the weather was the worst, rain and wind up to 20m/s, both the guides and the horses did amazing. Extra thanks to Elise, you’re the best.

Best horse ride I've had

As an experienced rider, I had a great time on a lively and fun pony. My friend, a beginner, also had a great ride on a steady safe pony. A really nice place and the ponies look well cared for and are obviously very fit as they were still raring to go after 3 hours. A must do for anyone who enjoys horse riding.

Iceland Horse Riding Tour Reviews

1. viking horse riding and golden circle tour from reykjavik.

  • Duration: 9 hours
  • Departure:  Vonarstræti 10, 101 Reykjavík
  • Departure Time: 9:30 am
  • Includes: Professional English speaking guide, National Park fees, transportation, necessary gear for riding

If you really want to experience the Icelandic wilderness, you can’t go wrong with this comprehensive, 9-hour tour. The Viking Horse Riding and Golden Circle Tour from Reykjavik tour packs a ton of adventure in to one day.

Go back in time, and see all kinds of natural beauties, as well as important pieces of man-made history. First, you’ll be picked up from your Reykjavik hotel, which is ultra-convenient.

You can pretty much roll out of bed and be ready – so long as you remember to bring some boots and clothing appropriate for ice and snow! You’ll head straight to the ranch located on the outskirts of the capital and is no more than 20 minutes away.

Once you arrive, you’ll get acquainted with your horse – an Icelandic horse. These majestic beauties are known for being gentle and able to perform 5 gaits, as opposed to most that can only perform 3 or 4.

The result is a much more comfortable ride, as you won’t be hopping around in the saddle. As you can imagine, this is a pleasant ride for all, but particularly great for beginner riders.

After you take a ride on these beauties, you’ll go on an express tour of 3 of the most popular Icelandic attractions: the Gullfoss Waterfall, the Geysir geysers, Thingvellir, and the Hveragerdi village. The Gullfoss and Geysir hot water springs are impressive, and are 2 different ways of displaying just how powerful water is!

Taking a quick stop at the UNESCO site, Thingvellir, is one of the crowd favorites and is home to the oldest functioning parliament on the planet! The national park holds one of the most special sites, too: the rift valley. Here, continental plates meet, creating a massive rift that really displays just how robust these plates are

Tour Information & Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, other experiences you may enjoy:, 2. private horse riding tour from reykjavík.

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Departure:  Akrar 2, 271 Mosfellsbær
  • Departure Time: Variety Available
  • Includes:  Light refreshments, local guide, use of helmet and gloves, warm overalls (in winter)

While the other guide is certainly a comprehensive, full-day tour, not everyone wants to commit to an entire day outdoors. If you’re looking for something shorter, to give you a taste of what the Icelandic nature has to offer, then this next tour is for you.

The Private Horse Riding Tour from Reykjavik is just 2 hours long, and will let you hop on and ride a beautiful Icelandic horse to explore rugged trails around a mountain!

The Icelandic horse has essentially been unchanged since the 9 th century, and is known for being so docile. Oh, and did we mention they’re absolutely gorgeous?

They feature unique coat and mane colors and combinations, with icy blue eyes and a fluffy mane that will instantly make you fall in love with them.

Mt. Ulfarsell sits in the countryside right outside the capital, making it remote yet close enough that it’s not inconvenient to travel from Reykjavik.

Once you arrive to the ranch, your guide will give you a safety briefing and make sure that both you and your horse are comfortable with each other. They will teach you how to mount the horse, and the basics of riding.

Not only that, but the guides offer a very interesting history lesson in the Icelandic culture and history. Check out breathtaking vistas over the mountain and the picturesque countryside while you ride, making it the perfect tour to fit into a busy day.

After you’re done riding, you’ll get to enjoy some light refreshments and get back to your hotel!

3. Horse Riding Tour in Akureyri

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Departure: Skjaldarvík Guest House Road 816, 601, Akureyri
  • Departure Time:  Variety Available
  • Includes:  Coffee, tea and cake, helmet, use of hot tub, professional guide

This next one is yet again another shorter tour, at just 1 hour, with hotel pickup and drop-off offered. The Horse Riding Tour in Akureyri also takes you on the special Icelandic horse, known for their docile, smooth gait.

This is one of the best ways of taking in the best vistas of Akureyri, with horses that know exactly what they’re doing. The groups are typically very small, which is great for safety and exploring more places!

Not only that, but you can feel confident asking your guides any questions you may have. They are very friendly and professional, making sure you’re well-prepared to ride. While giving a safety briefing, they’ll provide you with helmets as well.

You will be matched with a horse, depending on your comfort level and riding abilities. We felt that the staff did a great job here, and the horses seemed to have a good time, too!

As you ride around, the guide will tell you all about the history of your horse breed as well as the history of this area. The countryside is overall very easy to navigate, and is perfect if you’ve never ridden a horse before.

If you feel comfortable, you can absolutely go a bit faster when your guide says it’s okay to. Akureyri is known for its incredible beauty, with notable waterfalls and canyons, as well as important ports.

When you’re finished exploring, they invite you to enjoy some delicious coffee, tea, and dessert back at the guest house. If you’d like, you can even use the hot tub on site, which is great for relaxing the muscles after that horse ride!

4. Red Lava Horse Riding Tour From Reykjavik

  • Departure:  Surtlugata 19
  • Includes:  Coffee and/or tea, winter clothing, rain clothing, helmets

The Red Lava Horse Riding Tour from Reykjavik may sound like a scene from a Hollywood action film, but rest assured, this is a tour perfect for beginners and advanced riders, alike.

This 2-hour tour does include hotel pickup and drop-off options, and will take you through iconic lava hills, around lakes, and more.

Once you arrive to the ranch, you will be matched up with an Icelandic horse, depending on your experience level. The guides have many beginners on these tours, so they know which horses are ideal for newbies.

The route that your group takes will depend on your experience level, as well. If you’re just starting out, you’ll take the smooth, easier route on the Redhills. If you’re more experienced, you’ll head through Rauoarvatn.

The horses are so sweet, and know exactly what to do. Even when to stop for photo ops! They ride very well through thick snow, and will even show you the tolt gait!

Both routes offer incredible views of the Icelandic country, and offer you the opportunity to better your riding skills and hang out with a friendly horse. You will all go to the Heidmork Nature Reserve, where the lava hills are located. You’ll learn all about the 5,000-year-old volcano history, as well.

At Rauoavatn, you’ll breathe in fresh air emitted from the thick forests in this area. The first processes of forestry in Iceland were taken at the start of the 20 th century, which also has quite an extensive history here.

5. Family Friendly Horse Riding Tour in Skagafjörður

  • Departure: Vegamót, 560 Varmahlið
  • Includes:  English speaking guide, riding helmet, rain jackets/trousers if required, coffee and/or tea

Are you on the hunt for a riding tour in Iceland that’s perfect for the whole family? If so, we’ve got just the one for you! The Family Friendly Horse Riding Tour in Skagafjorour is an hour-long tour – perfect for little ones who may have less patience.

Not only that, but the guides manage to make it fun, even for children! This tour also involves Icelandic horses, with their special trot much smoother than regular horses.

As they also tend to be a bit shorter, this seems to intimidate children less, who’ve never been on one. The guides do a great job at matching the rider with the horse, based on personality and skill.

Once the guide gives a safety briefing and provides everyone with their helmets, you’ll follow them to discover this area’s magnificent landscape! With small group sizes, the experience is very personalized.

You’ll have enough time to ask the guide any questions you may have, and they’ll pay attention to making sure everyone feels comfortable.

There will be moments along the trails where you have the option to go faster. The horses perform well at just about any pace, and adds a bit of fun to the adventure.

There will be various moments along the trails that are great for stopping and taking some photos. With the guide’s professional knowledge about the area, you’ll see the most picturesque locations – from bubbling streams to ridges! They include all necessary gear, and a hot beverage for you, so you stay warm and comfy!

Iceland Tour Guide

There are many reasons the Land of Fire and Ice has seen an explosion in tourism since 2019. Not only can you see the Northern Lights, active volcanoes, glaciers, and puffins, you can also relax in a geothermal spa and even bake bread inside a pot buried underground.

What you decide to do in this fascinating country is your choice, but you should take the time to do some research before you go. This guide is here to inform you where you can go, what you can do, and how you can get there, because we want you to have the best vacation of your life in Iceland.

Airports & Entry

Most visitors to Iceland arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF). Although Iceland only has a population of 359 thousand people, in 2018 this busy airport handled 9.8 million passengers. Despite the number of visitors, there is only one terminal. You will find the check-in times minimal, with an average 20-minute waiting time at the security check.

Inside the terminal, you will find everything clearly signposted in English. Charging points for cellphones and laptops are provided in the waiting area along with free Wi-Fi.

Strollers are provided for children, and there is a dedicated kids’ play area. The usual selection of food outlets and shops are found on the upper floor of the main building. Manned information stands are located throughout the airport.

It is 30 miles from the airport to Reykjavik, the capital city. The speed limit is 55 mph, but the drive usually takes 50 minutes due to traffic. Shuttle bus services link KEF to the city, which you can book in advance online or pay for at the airport.

Some hotels offer airport collection, and you should ask about that when you book your room. You can, of course, jump in a taxi at the airport, but it will be extremely expensive compared to the airport bus service. Car rental is available at the airport, but it is advisable to book in advance.

Planning Tips

With so many exciting things to do and see in Iceland, you’re guaranteed to have a great holiday. However, things do not always go to plan, so here are 5 tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Tip #1: If you want to see the Aurora Borealis, go between September and March

It’s easier to view the Northern Lights when the sky is at its darkest. In Iceland, the nights are especially long between September and March, but the sky doesn’t grow dark enough to view this magical phenomenon during the summer months. However, do not plan a visit around a full moon, because its light can dampen the impact of this natural light display. The best days to go are around the time of a new moon.

Tip #2: Check out the SolarHam website

If you are especially interested in the Aurora Borealis and want to earn your Geek Badge, check out the SolarHam website. This techy site provides a 3-day geomagnetic forecast, which is useful for aurora hunters to select the best time to view the Northern Lights. The same site provides a satellite map of where the natural light show is right now, so you can look up if you’re near.

Tip #3: Take your time to enjoy all the attractions of Iceland

There’s so much to see in Iceland, it would be a crime not to explore and experience as much as you are able in the time you have. While you are there, do not miss the opportunity to see so many unforgettable natural phenomena in one place. There is nowhere else on the planet where you can see active volcanoes, glaciers, and ice caves , all in one national park.

Tip #4: Book everything in advance, especially in winter

Tourism is on the rise in Iceland, and hotel rooms, tours, and attractions get fully-booked ahead of time.  Don’t miss out on seeing the Northern Lights from the best vantage point possible because all the tours were booked-up before you arrived. Many tours like the ones detailed above offer a 24-hour-in-advance free cancellation, so you take no financial risk booking. Ask about free cancellation when buying your ticket.

Tip #5: Impress your friends with quintessentially Icelandic souvenirs

The budget chain store Bonus stocks many unique Icelandic products, such as Omnom chocolate, Icelandic specialty teas, herbal sea salt blends, and licorice mixed with chocolate. At Bonus, you can pick up great, inexpensive gifts for your friends! Vinbuoin, the state-run liquor store, sells a fine selection of renowned Icelandic spirits, including Iceland’s signature tipple, Brennivin.

And if you like to sort through other folks’ debris for the hidden treasures, a special weekend market is held at Kolaportio in downtown Reykjavik where Icelanders come to sell off their unwanted goods when moving to a new house. You could find anything!

Restaurants & Eating Out

Because of Iceland’s geographical position and climate, vegetables and grains are rare in traditional foods, and many famous dishes focus on preserved seafood or meat. Also, food was scarce in yesteryears, so every part of an animal or fish was eaten. You’ll find many traditional meals involve fish or meat that is salted, smoked, dried, or fermented. Watch out for such culinary delights as baked sheep’s head and fermented shark.

Seafood restaurants are common throughout Iceland, and all serve “fish of the day”, which is usually salmon, monkfish, haddock, or cod. However, if you wish, you can seek out some of the more exotic options. Humar is a kind of lobster caught off the south coast of Iceland, renowned for its tender and tasty flesh.

It is served fried, baked or grilled, though it can also be found as a pizza topping! Plokkfishkur is a fish stew, made to the chef’s specific recipe but usually combining white fish with onions, potatoes, milk, and flour. Harofiskur is a snack you can buy in any grocery store. It is dried stockfish, eaten with butter or straight out of a bag.

Because it is difficult to grow wheat in Iceland, there are many traditional varieties of rye bread, like flatkaka, baked in thin disks on hot stones. One variety of rye bread you should try is rugbrauo, a sweet-tasting, dark bread.

The reason rugbrauo is so interesting for visitors to Iceland is that a common baking technique is to bury a dough-filled pot near one of the many hot springs, such as Fontana Hot Springs, and use geothermal heat to bake the bread. Rugbrauo baked that way is also called hyerabrauo (hot-spring bread).

Icelanders don’t only eat fish and rye bread. Sheep are the most common livestock in Iceland, so lamb is often on the menu. Sheep wander freely around the countryside, eating seaweed, grass, and berries, which tends to make lamb tender with a mild flavor.

Smoked lamb is called hangikjöt and is often served boiled during the winter holidays. Also watch out for varieties of meat you won’t see in most other countries, like puffin, horse, and whale. Despite international concern over puffins and whales, they are still commonly consumed in Iceland.

A meal on vacation isn’t complete without dessert. Popular local sweets include rugbrauosis (rye bread ice cream), pönnukökur (Icelandic pancakes), and snuour (cinnamon bread covered in caramel or chocolate). A dairy product unique to Iceland is skyr.

It is a kind of sour milk cheese eaten like yogurt and often sweetened and flavored with fruit or vanilla.

Nightlife & Entertainment

With long, cold nights throughout the winter, it’s no surprise Icelanders love their nightlife, and much of it is centered where most of the people live—Reykjavik. Because the capital is so small, most of the clubs and bars are within walking distance of one another. In fact, many are along one street, Laugavegur, the commercial artery of downtown.

Most social venues are informal and entrance fees rare. When Icelanders go out for the night, they tend to begin late, and many clubs and bars don’t get busy until after midnight. This is in part because alcohol in bars is expensive, so locals drink at home before setting out.

Many clubs and bars stay open as late as 5 am. Cocktail bars are a recent addition to Iceland’s nightlife, but with the booming tourist trade, they are rapidly expanding.

And don’t worry too much about safety at night. In 2019, the Institute for Economics and Peace in Sydney ranked Iceland the most peaceful nation on Earth for the 12 th year running. Crime rates in Reykjavik are probably lower than anywhere you have ever lived.

Getting Around

Iceland is a small country covering an area slightly smaller than Kentucky. If you wanted to drive from Reykjavik on the west coast to Faskruosfjorour on the east coast, the 425 miles route would take only 8½ hours.

However, because of its small population outside of the capital, you cannot rely on public transport to go sightseeing around the country or reach the best place to view the northern lights. This leaves you with two options: hiring a car or booking a coach tour, like the Golden Circle tour detailed above.

Within the capital and its immediate area, you do have more options: bus, taxi, bicycle, or walk. The public bus service is inexpensive and efficient, and you can ask for help to find the right bus from your hotel reception. Given that Reykjavik is so small a city, taxis are affordable.

If you want a little exercise, bicycle rentals are available in many hotels, and the city is crisscrossed by dedicated bicycle paths. If you decide to walk, make sure you wrap up well. The weather can deteriorate rapidly in Iceland.

Accommodations

Over the past few years, Iceland has seen a huge expansion in tourism. With a 378% increase since 2010, hotel rooms fill up quickly. Through Christmas and summer, hotels are usually fully booked. Since 228 of Iceland’s 359 thousand citizens live within the capital and its immediate hinterland, settlements throughout the rest of Iceland are small and rooms for visitors limited. Most hotels are in the capital.

You will probably find it most convenient to stay in Reykjavik. You will find a broad range of hotels there, it is near the airport, and many of the attractions along with most of the nightlife are found there or nearby. Many organized tours to other parts of Iceland and major tourist attractions set out from Reykjavik, such as most of the Northern Lights tours detailed above.

Within the downtown and central area of Reykjavik you will find a choice of luxury hotels, like the Hotel Borg downtown and The Icelandair Hotel Marina, overlooking the harbor. If you head a little more out of the center, you’ll find more affordable hostels, such as The Capital Inn and Bus Hostel Reykjavik .

There are some popular hotels outside of the capital near to tourist attractions, such as Hotel Skaftafell in the Vatnajökull National Park, which offers spectacular views of Iceland’s largest mountain, or Skyrhusid Guesthouse near Lake Jökulsarion in the south. Wherever you decide to stay, the important thing is to book in advance. If you don’t, you will miss out on the best rooms.

Iceland is not the place to go if you want year-round sunshine and dry weather. In fact, on 22 nd December there are only 4 hours of daylight, because that is the shortest day. That’s great if you want to see the Aurora Borealis, since it can only be seen during dark nights, but not so good for other sightseeing. In contrast, the longest day boasts 21 hours of daylight, 21 st June.

The “warm” summer period covers June, July, and August, with an average daily high of 55 0 F and a low of 46 0 F. Yes, 55 0 F is their summer high! Summers are short and cloudy. The winter period covers November through March, two months longer than summer, and is cold, wet, windy, and overcast, with frequent snow. The average daily high drops to 35 0 F in January with a low of 27 0 F.

If your main interest is the Northern Lights, you should go anytime September through March, because the sky is dark enough to view those fantastic electromagnetic displays. If the Aurora Borealis does not interest you, you’ll get the warmest weather and longer days from the end of June to mid-August.

Attractions

The Northern Lights are not the only unique and fascinating attraction in Iceland. The Land of Fire and Ice is the best place in the world to see and experience the majesty and power of two extremes in Nature: glaciers and volcanoes. These attractions are all part of what is called the “Golden Circle”. Taking a day tour of the Golden Circle with a guide is a great way to take in all of the best sights.

12 miles from KEF is the world-famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Here you can laze in pools of hot, milky blue water heated by a lava flow. Nearby stands the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant, which uses superheated water from the lava flow to generate electricity and also provide heat for a municipal water heating system.

There are geothermal spas like the Blu Lagoon throughout Iceland, so wherever you choose to stay, you can find one near you and experience the power of molten rock.

Perhaps one of the most unique attractions is seeing the continental plates splitting apart at Silfra. Here the North American and Eurasian plates are separating. If you are daring you can take a snorkel tour of Silfra and see it for yourself!

If you are there in the winter, be sure to see the migrating whales. To have the best chance of see them, that a whale watching tour . The boat captains know the best places to go to see them.

If ice and Arctic landscapes interest you, head 140 miles east from Reykjavik to Vatnajökull National Park , which is centered on Vatnajökull glacier and the surrounding beautiful landscape. This park covers 14% of Iceland and is filled with glacial rivers and active volcanoes. To fully see it, take a tour of the glaciers !

Vatnajökull glacier empties into the glacial lake of Jökulsarion in the south, where you can see 100-feet-tall icebergs freshly broken away from the glacier. Jökulsarion served as a setting in several major Hollywood movies. On your drive back to Reykjavik, you can see two beautiful waterfalls around Skogar. The first, Skogafoss, is an impressive waterfall and a popular destination for Icelandic day-trippers.

18 miles west of Skogafoss is picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall . A path allows sightseers to pass behind the curtain of water as it falls into the crystal-clear plunge pool.

If it’s man-made cultural and historical attractions you seek, you’ll find plenty to do and see around Reykjavik. The capital’s earliest history stretches back to 874, but it only became a true city in 1785.

Around Reykjavik, you’ll find an interesting assortment of museums and tourist attractions, like the National Museum of Iceland and the Reykjavik Maritime Museum.

A famous landmark visitors flock to see is the Hallgrimskirkja Church, which is the largest church in Iceland. This unique structure was designed by a local architect to resemble the glaciers and mountains of Iceland.

Trip Advisor

Absolutely loved this excursion! I’ve had a horse in America for almost 20 years. These horses were a brand new experience for me. They are beautiful and have such unique gates. I went with my friend who was a beginner rider and she loved it as well. The staff are so nice and helpful and the horses are very responsive. The landscape is gorgeous and on a clear day you can see all the way to the mountains and the active volcano. 10/10 would do again!

Horseback Riding Tours

WHAT TO EXPECT ON AN ICELANDIC HORSE RIDING TOUR

A horseback riding tour is the best way to experience the Icelandic horse. You’ll meet the other visitors in your small tour group on location and be given the right equipment for the activity. Then you’ll be matched to your horse for the remainder of the day, selected to match your height so that you can ride comfortably. Naturally, novices may be given easier horses to ride, and more confident equestrians paired with horses with more personality or strength.

After you’ve been shown how to correctly mount and control the Icelandic horse under you, it’s time to ride! The group may be split into groups depending on the confidence of the riders, with a slower walk-only group or a more exhilarating chance to try out the unique 5 gates of the horses. Then the ride begins, and you can relax and enjoy the rolling landscape before you! If you’re ever struggling to control the horse’s direction or speed, you’ll have plenty of friendly guides around you to ask or help out.

You’ll usually get a break after a stretch of the ride (mainly for the horses, not the humans). This is ideal for taking pictures, both of the scenery and of you on the majestic horses, while they have a snack. Our guides are happy to get shots of all the tour groups while visitors can say hello to the other Icelandic horses in the group.

WHAT TO WEAR ON A HORSEBACK RIDING TOUR

If you aren’t an avid equestrian, you might be unsure of what to wear on your Icelandic horseback riding tour. First and foremost, wear comfortable clothes. While you won’t exert yourself too much, you will be out on the horses for over an hour, so it’s important to be comfy .

Long pants will save your legs from chafing against the saddle. The clothes should be quite close to your skin so they won’t get tangled in the equipment. Try to avoid long scarves for the same reason. The weather in Iceland is very unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to dress in layers. If it gets too cold or too hot, you can easily adjust your outfit just by adding or removing a layer or two.

Warm, waterproof, closed-toe shoes with a small heel will keep your feet comfortable and in the stirrups.

Which Horse Riding Tour Is Right for Me?

We offer a range of horse riding tours where you’ll not only get to meet these charming, four-legged Icelanders but also explore unique Icelandic landscapes! All of our horseback riding tours are in small groups and led by experienced tour guides. Choose from a horse riding day tour or combine your riding experience with another adventure such as snorkeling, rafting, or a hike to hot spring pools. We offer tours from Reykjavík and from other locations, so pick a spot most convenient for you and join us for your ultimate horseback riding tour in Iceland!

Ride through the rolling Icelandic countryside on a Viking steed just outside Reykjavík! This tour is perfect for you if you’re looking for a relaxing ride. Spend an hour gently trotting on a trail between the Bláfjöll Mountains on one side and moss-covered lava fields on the other.

For a longer ride, choose our 5-hour horse riding lava tour from Reykjavík . This tour will take you through lava fields and across beautiful hillsides with the peaks of the Bláfjöll Mountains on the horizon.

Explore the South Coast on horseback on our black beach tour . Ride through dramatic, volcanically scarred scenery and explore the black sand at Víkurfjara Beach. We offer a family tour option on this trip so everyone can enjoy remarkable Icelandic horse riding!

Travel in true Icelandic spirit through wild meadows and rough lava fields in south Iceland. This tour will take you past several farms and the guide will tell you about the development of agriculture in the country. To wrap up the heritage tour , you are warmly invited for a traditional home-baked treat and a hot drink.

Combo Tours

If you’re looking for an add-on to your horse riding afternoon, combine your excursion with other activities.

Explore lava fields from above and below, on our combo horse riding and lava cave tour ! Walk, climb , and crawl inside the Leiðarendi Cave to discover the marvels that volcanoes created more than 2,000 years ago. Once you’re above the ground, jump on your steed and immerse yourself in a horseback riding adventure through stunning Icelandic nature.

If you have a need for speed, mix your horseback tour with an off-road ATV mountain ride. This adrenaline rush is available just outside of Reykjavík, all year round. Ride an Icelandic horse and then compare one horsepower to that of our Can-Am Outlander Max Quad bikes !

Ice adventure seekers will love the combination of horse riding and a glacier hike . Use ice crampons and an ice axe to walk on the ice and hike on top of Sólheimajökull Glacier . The icecap is carved with dramatic ice formations including rugged ridges, crevasses, and sinkholes. Once you descend, make your way to the village of Vik, where you’ll find the horses waiting to take you through the unique Víkurfjara black sand beach.

Visit one of the Golden Circle highlights, Thingvellir National Park, on a horseback riding and snorkeling tour. Take the plunge into the underwater world in Silfra Fissure, which is one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and diving. Crystal-clear water reveals exceptional sights of plants and fish swimming in between two tectonic plates. There’s no rightful word to describe the true beauty of this place — you’ll just have to ride here and see for yourselves.

Watersports enthusiasts will be excited to learn that we also offer river rafting and horse riding combo tours! These are available from May to September so don’t miss a chance to spend an adventure-packed day in nature, riding sturdy Icelandic horses and paddling down the mighty Hvitá River.

FAQS ABOUT OUR HORSEBACK RIDING TOURS

Do i need any previous experience with horses.

No, you don’t need to have any experience with horses of any kind. Our tours are designed to cater to people of all abilities, which means those with more experience will find it just as enjoyable as novice equestrians. Our friendly guides will teach you all you need to know about the equipment and riding the horses themselves.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO GO HORSEBACK RIDING IN ICELAND?

It’s actually possible year-round to ride Icelandic horses in Iceland. However, the summer months when the weather is fairest make for the best time to embark on one of our incredible horse riding tours.

HOW LONG WILL MY TOUR BE?

The duration of your tour will depend on the type of tour you choose. However, horseback riding tours in Iceland typically last between 1 and 2 hours, so that you can enjoy the experience without over-working these gentle creatures.

icelandic pony tours

IS RIDING ICELANDIC HORSES SAFE?

The answer to this is a resounding ‘yes’. Icelandic horses are well-known for their intelligence and gentle nature. They are also very obedient, and will typically follow the other horses in the group. It’s always important to pay attention to safety and behavior instructions from your guides so that the tour can be as comfortable as possible for you and the animals.

CAN I TAKE PHOTOS DURING MY HORSE RIDING TOUR?

While riding your Icelandic horse, you may want to capture the experience with a photograph. It’s important to keep a tight hold of your phone while moving so it doesn't get lost or trampled, but you are otherwise welcome to take pictures. The tour will usually make a halfway stop, where your guides will be more than happy to take some pictures on your devices of you and these magnificent creatures.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WEATHER IS BAD?

Bad weather in Iceland can roll in quickly, meaning that even some days in the summer months experience poor conditions. Unfortunately, if your guides deem it unsafe to continue with the tour, the tour may be rescheduled during your time in Iceland. While the animals are adapted for Iceland’s weather conditions with a thick coat, we want to make sure you have the best experience possible.

Triplogo

We took the lava field trail ride with pick up in Reykjavik. Pick up was easy (as it was for all tours we did- Reykjavik and the tour companies have it down to a science!). Helmets were provided. Winter gear was available if you weren't dressed warmly enough. We were divided into 'beginner' and 'advanced' to put us on the right level of (cooperative) pony. The ponies were very easy to handle and we were given a choice whether we wanted to go fast (tolt pace) or slow (we went fast). Icelandic ponies and saddles are a heck of a lot more comfortable than US Western or English riding and horses! Beautiful scenery and a nice opportunity to experience the Icelandic pony!

Wake Up Reykjavik Tour Review by Lewis S

Only me and my partner attended, we had a lovely chat with the guide, both our horses Ást and Stármur were incredible friendly, while Stármur liked to veer left a bit he was very cooperative at getting back in line, it was incredibly cold but we were well wrapped up and we’re offered more layers, the walk was nice and long and the staff were kind enough to let us say bye to the horses during their feeding time after we finished

Wake Up Reykjavik Tour Review by The Venue at Chilleens

Highly recommend ! No matter the time of year! We went in the winter so it was cold but we wore heated vests and snow suits and we were fine! Molly was our guide on this amazing horse back riding adventure! She was knowledgeable and taught us all the things we needed to know to have a fun ride! Our horses were well mannered and sweet. We loved everything about it!

Small groups only for real horse riding experience

Riding a horse in Iceland is a cultural experience

We have been riding the Icelandic horse since the settlement of Iceland. The Icelandic sagas are full of descriptions of the Vikings riding their Icelandic horses not only for battles but also for social gatherings, where they would ride the Icelandic horse together from farm to farm and visit political allies, friends or family.

Sleeping with the horses

Riding a horse is only a part of the experience of visiting the Mr Iceland farm.

We practice spiritual and physical connection with the horse and with that in mind we designed the “sleeping with the horses” cabins.

The cabins are placed in the middle of the field, surrounded with an amazing view of horses , glaciers and volcanos .

Have dinner with a real Viking

After the ride we sit down at the long table and feast! We tell stories of our ancestors – the Vikings, stories of good and evil but we also love to hear stories from other countries and cultures that you want to share. The dinner consists of local food , lamb and local vegetables . The dinner is a place where we sit down and share our experiences , dreams and tell stories.

There are only 8 seats available at the table. We are looking forward to having you at our table – welcome my friend!

Besides the incredible scenery and stunning natural sites, one of the top things to do when visiting this Nordic nation is to go horseback riding in Iceland. Icelandic horses are unique and beautiful and going on for a ride is one of the best ways to see the country from a different perspective.

Drive even a small way outside of Reykjavik and you’ll see these gentle, sturdy and stalky little horses grazing in pastures and meadows all over the Icelandic countryside. And they’re some of the most distinctive (and adorable!) horses in the world!

There are many characteristics of the Icelandic horse that sets them apart from other breeds and riding them is an excellent way to see the parts of the country away from the Ring Road while also experiencing a bit of local culture and tradition.

About Icelandic Horses

It’s a horse, not a pony.

Let’s talk a little bit about the Icelandic horse itself. This hearty equine is a breed unique to all others and really an iconic part of the country of Iceland itself.

Though the Icelandic horse only stands at about 13 – 14 hands (132 – 142 cm) tall — a height that would generally classify an equine as a pony — don’t be fooled; the Icelandic horse is a horse through and through.

While short in stature, these little horses are sturdy, stalky, and tough as nails. Throughout thousands of years, natural selection has played its part in allowing the horse to withstand and persevere through the harsh Icelandic climate.

Their sturdy builds, spirited temperaments, and ability to carry immense amounts of weight all are reason enough to classify these equines as horses. So pay the Icelandic horse a bit of respect and remember that it’s not a pony!

Sturdy Icelandic horse

Icelandic Horse Gait

Another idiosyncrasy that makes the Icelandic horse unique among other breeds is their distinctive gaits.

In general, horses and ponies share four basic gaits: the walk, trot, canter, and gallop. All four of these are at various increasing speeds and beats. While Icelandic horses do share the walk, trot, and canter with most other horse breeds in the world, there are two other gaits that make the Icelandic horse distinctive from all other horse and pony breeds that you might be familiar with.

The first unique gait of the Icelandic horse is called a  tölt . The  tölt  is similar to a trot and is the most natural gait for an Icelandic horse.

At a speed that lands somewhere between a trot and a canter, it is also incredibly smooth so it eliminates the need to post while riding and there is little chance that you’ll be bounced out of the saddle – perfect for beginner riders!

unique and beautiful Icelandic horses

The other gait that sets the Icelandic horse apart is called  flugskeið , or flying pace. The flying pace is the fastest gait in the Icelandic horse’s repertoire at one step above a canter but just below a gallop.

In this gait, the horses are able to reach speeds of nearly 48 km/hour and, because of the breed’s incredible heartiness and sure-footedness, they are able to sustain it for long periods of time.

Fun Facts about the Icelandic Horse

The Icelandic horse is descended from the Faroe pony and the Norwegian fjord horse and was brought to Iceland by the Vikings. There are also genetic links between the Icelandic horse and the similar Mongolian horse.

According to Norse mythology, the god Odin is said to have ridden an eight-footed Icelandic steed called Sleipnir. In the early 20th century, Icelandic horses were exported to Britain and were used as pit ponies during the mining boom.

There are about 80,000 Icelandic horses in the country, meaning that there is one horse for approximately every four people. Icelandic horses have passports, but once one leaves Iceland, they are not permitted to return.

The Best Horseback Riding Tours in Iceland

With approximately 80,000 Icelandic horses throughout the small island nation, Iceland horseback riding is an unmissable thing to do.

If you’re visiting this beautiful Nordic nation and are looking for the best places to ride horses in Iceland and the best horse riding tours in Iceland, check out these suggestions:

Red Lava Horse Riding

If you’re looking to ride horses from a base in Reykjavik rather than having to travel too far outside the capital, then a good option for you is to book a day tour with Red Lava Horse Riding.

This two-hour horseback riding tour will pick you up from Reykjavik an hour before your scheduled tour time and also provides essential gear such as gloves, waterproof clothing, and helmets. The tour guide will take you all around some beautiful, scenic South Iceland landscapes that are difficult to see on foot and it is suitable for absolute beginners and more experienced riders alike.

After the tour, they will bring you back to Reykjavik. You also have the option to drive to their stables yourself if you have your own transport in Iceland.

Getting ready to go horse riding in Iceland

Icelandic Horseback Riding Tour from Reykjavik

This 2-hour tour from Reykjavik is another great option if you’re looking for a tour from Reykjavik. The stables aren’t located too far outside of the city centre and the 1 to 1.5-hour trail ride will take you through some beautiful mountain and volcanic scenery all while not venturing too far from Reykjavik itself.

Riders can choose from a beginner, intermediate or advanced trail ride depending on their skill level, meaning this is one of the best horse riding tours for those who don’t have much (or any!) riding experience. Also, everyone has the opportunity to warm up with a steaming mug of coffee or hot chocolate after the ride.

Like the Red Lava tours listed above, the cost of transport to and from Reykjavik is also included, as is any riding gear that you may need (gloves, helmets, boots, rain gear, etc.).

Afternoon Viking Horseback Tour

If you’re an intermediate to advanced rider looking to go ride Icelandic horses without having to venture too far from Reykjavik, then this 3-hour afternoon tour is a great option.

Located only 10 minutes outside of the capital, this 3-hour horseback riding tour will allow you to explore the Reykjanes preservation area on the back of a beautiful Icelandic horse.

You should be prepared to trot, tolt and canter for the majority of the time and the stable does recommend that riders have ridden horses at least 30 times before embarking on this tour. Basically, they want to ensure that you know how to handle and control a horse while in several different gaits so you don’t hold back a group of experienced riders.

Perfect for riders aged 12 or older, all gear is also provided so you don’t need to worry about bringing your helmet or boots along with everything else you’re likely packing for your Iceland trip.

There is also an option to include a transfer to and from the riding centre if you haven’t rented a car. All in, you can expect this tour to last about five hours, with three hours of active riding time.

Vik Horse Adventure

If you’re looking for a great place to ride horses outside of the capital, then another fantastic option is to go on the black sand beach tour with Vik Horse Adventure.

This tour, leaving from the town of Vik in the south of Iceland, lasts about one hour and goes along the stunning black sand beach nearby. This is an excellent way to experience some of the most distinctive landscapes in the country, if not the entire world.

The ride, again, is suitable for all experience levels and they do provide some essentials such as helmets, gloves, and rain gear.

Horseback Riding + Golden Circle Tours

If you’re short on time and want to get the most out of your stay in Iceland, there are a number of tours that combine a stint of Icelandic horseback riding with a full tour of the incredible Golden Circle.

For example, this tour that leaves from Reykjavik will take you on a trail ride in the countryside around the Icelandic capital before taking you to the beautiful Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall (fed from the meltwater from the Langjökull glacier) and the Geysir hot spring. All in, the tour lasts about nine hours so it’s a full, active day.

Alternatively, this 11-hour tour will pick you up from your hotel before taking you to all of the highlights of the Golden Circle. To end the day, you will go on a 1-hour horseback ride through the lava fields and experience the beauty of Iceland on the back of a spirited Icelandic horse before being dropped off back at your hotel.

"This is really a professionaly run riding centre out in the countryside - so many cute Icelandic horses - all living as a happy herd. Everyone was so friendly and the hotel modern and fresh. The riding is unique and there is something for everyone with the ever changing scenery."

This is a Summer tour available every Wednesday and Sunday between 1 May 2024 - 30 September 2024

Riding with  Northern Lights and Hot Springs & Whale Watching Winter Tours Available up until 30 April 2024 and from 1 October 2024

Option 1: 3 days Riding approx 55 km

Day 1: arrival.

After arriving at Keflavík Airport, participants take the Flybus to BSÍ bus station in Reykjavik. There you will be greeted around 17:30–18:00 by one of our team and be driven (under one hour) to the farm, close to the village Hveragerði. Your accommodation is onsite at our award winning eco friendly and sustainable hotel. The day ends with dinner at the farm hotel.

Day 2: Ölfusá River Delta

Your guide will meet you after breakfast for a short introduction before you get to know the horses. The day starts with a practical riding demonstration, followed by a few rounds in the indoor arena or paddock.  We then start riding out into nature, discovering the beautiful landscape opening up between the volcanic mountains and the Atlantic ocean in southern Iceland. We begin the tour on nice riding trails along our green meadows which are ideal for trying the special gait of the Icelandic horse, tölt. The trail continues along the river Gljúfurá to an old cemetery close to the mighty glacial river Ölusá, where we stop for a lunch break and enjoy the panoramic view of the river delta and the famous volcanos Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull, weather permitting. We then follow a grassy path further down to the soft, black lava sand on the river banks and through shallow water to the green islands in the river delta. We enjoy riding on soft ground on the islands, across sand and water, with good chances of seeing various kinds of birds living in the wetlands of the nearby bird sanctuary Ölfusforir. We end the ride on trails along meadows and relax with coffee and home-baked cake in our Cafeteria. Before dinner you may want to relax in the warm hot tubs at the hotel.

Day 3: The Hot Spring Tour Reykjadalur Valley

This day offers spectacular views and a surprising variety of magnificent Icelandic nature. We first ride along the slopes of Reykjafjall mountain and continue on nice riding trails surrounding the small village Hveragerði. The path then takes us through a green forest to a colourful geothermal valley with hot springs, an area which expanded dramatically during an earthquake in 2008. On our way towards the green hills surrounding the volcano Hengill, we have good opportunity to try the “tölt”, the special gait of the Icelandic horse. The horses then take us on a leisurely pace following narrow trails up into the valley Reykjadalur. We pass the beautiful waterfall Djúpagilsfoss and some hot springs before we reach Reykjadalur valley and will have the opportunity to take a relaxing bath in a warm stream. During the ride down the valley, we enjoy fascinating panoramas over the surroundings, the village Hveragerði, picturesque farmland and all the way down to the coastline, where we might see the Westman Islands, weather permitting. We continue along the mountain slopes again back to the farm, where coffee and home-baked cake are waiting for us. This tour includes about 30 minutes of hiking (four short walks),

Day 4: Ingólfstrail

After breakfast and check-out we start the day tour following the route of the “Heritage Tour”. The trail takes us through a small river,  a lava field and along meadows, passing by several horse farms that give us an idea of how agriculture has developed in the last decades in Iceland. On our way we enjoy the fascinating scenery of volcanic mountains towering over green hills and pastures, riding between large fields with grazing horses on excellent paths that are ideal for a brisk tölt.  After the lunch break we head towards the table mountain Ingólfsfjall, named after the first settler of Iceland, Ingólfur Arnarson The landscape is changing drastically at the foot of the mountain, and we take a break between huge rocks, soft pillows of green moss and perhaps some grazing sheep. We then follow a scenic, narrow old Viking trail along the slopes of the mountain, riding in the footsteps of the first settler Ingólfur Arnarsson. On the way back to our farm Vellir we ride along the mountain Reykjafjall, where both sheep and horses graze in the summer, with nice views over the surrounding area and the village of Hveragerði. After the ride, we enjoy some refreshments before the bus takes you back to Reykjavik at about 16:15. If you are booked on for the 4 day ride you will enjoy dinner at the Hotel and can look forward to a trip to the beach tomorrow.

We follow the scenic beach along the surf of the North Atlantic for a few kilometres, riding on soft black lava sand until we reach the beautiful area where the mighty glacial river Ölfusá meets the sea in a large delta. We then continue through shallow water at the edge of the river delta and ride on grassy river banks and along wetlands and meadows towards the farmland in the Ölfús area, where our farm Vellir is located. On our way we have plenty of opportunities to try the smooth gait of the Icelandic horse “tölt” on nice trails in beautiful scenery which seems to be far from civilization and enjoy spectacular views of mountains and the volcanos Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull, weather permitting. We also have good chances to see the sea- and wetland birds of various kinds living in the Flói Bird Reserve between the ocean shore and the river. After we have reached the old cemetery at Arnarbæli we ride along the river Gljúfurá and pastures with grazing horses back to our farm. The bus takes you back to Reykjavik at about 16:15.

Helpful Information

What to bring.

We can provide you with hats, riding boots and rain/ outerwear but please have good shoes, comfortable leggings or tracksuit bottoms (riding jodphurs not necessary), gloves and a buff is recommended and if you want to bring a camera, please bring a small waist bag as backpacks cannot be taken on horseback. Bring your swimsuit and towel!

Riding wear / gear – Caution: Disinfect!

Used boots, riding wear, helmets, saddlebags etc. must be disinfected before arrival in Iceland.  Chaps, bridles and other used leather gear must not be brought to Iceland. That is because infectious, contagious diseases can easily be brought into the country, which poses a great threat for the horses as they are not vaccinated. Riding wear is normally washed and shoes and are washed and cleaned with VirkonS, Iodine or some other fluid disinfectant.

Riding Ability

The riding style in Iceland is similar to English riding. We use simple snaffle bits, bridles with detachable nose-bands and clips on the end of the reins so they can be easily removed when grazing. Our saddles are comfortable with soft, rather flat seat, it is not necessary to bring saddle seat pads.

These tours are suited for all experience levels. We select horses according to riding skills and participants on our tours always get to try “tölt”, the special, smooth gait of the Icelandic horse.

Children from Age 10 years.

Weight limit

Icelandic horses are capable of carrying adults without difficulty. The maximum weight is 120 kg/18 stone . Riders must be able to mount a horse with little assistance.

Climate and weather

Thanks to the Gulf Stream, temperatures are usually moderate all year round. Average temperatures in Reykjavík are about  12°C in July and 1°C in January. Icelandic weather is known to be unpredictable and changing several times a day. A beautiful day can suddenly turn windy and rainy (and vice versa). Travellers to Iceland should be prepared for anything and dress in layers.

Daylight hours

From mid-May to mid-August the sun only sets for only a few hours per day, and it is effectively light for the whole 24-hour period. In contrast, there are around 4-5 hours of effective daylight during mid-winter. But Iceland’s inexpensive geothermal energy means that streets and buildings are well-lit during winter darkness.

Golden Circle and Horse Tour

WATERFALLS, GEYSERS, LAVA CANYONS AND HORSES

The Golden Circle Classic is our bestselling day tour, audio guided in 10 languages! You will see the world-famous erupting geyser & hot springs, experience the magnificent Gullfoss Waterfall and follow in the footsteps of the Vikings of old as you walk down the lava canyon at Þingvellir. The day will end with horse-riding through meadows and lava fields.

The tour starts with a stop in Þingvellir National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site listing and the birthplace of the oldest existing parliament in the world. This is also where the gigantic tectonic plates of America and Eurasia have pulled apart and the resulting rift valley is right there before your eyes on the shores of Iceland’s biggest lake.

The next stop is at Geysir Hot Springs , the home of the one-and-only original geyser and Iceland’s most iconic natural attraction. Here the ground trembles and steaming hot water spouts spectacularly skywards from the famous Strokkur Geyser every few minutes.

Now for a leisurely walk down to Gullfoss Waterfall , which is an awesome sight to behold. Here a powerful glacial river cascades down 32 meters on two levels and into a narrow canyon with a thunderous roar.

The horse riding tour will take us through meadows, lava fields, and a small river. We will enjoy the picturesque scenery of volcanic mountains and farmland , passing several farms, giving us an idea of how Icelandic agriculture has developed in the last decades. The trails are good for horse riding, giving us an opportunity to experience the special gait of the Icelandic horse “tölt”.

Þingvellir National Park

Located on the northern shores of Þingvallavatn (Iceland's largest lake), Þingvellir (anglicized as 'Thingvellir') is the national pride of Iceland and our first National Park. It is, for one, a key location in Icelandic history as the oldest existing parliament in the world was first assembled there in 930 AD. For this reason, Þingvellir has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is, therefore, a protected national park due to its unique geology and natural features. From the viewing area, the Almannagjá canyon between two tectonic plates can be seen, a visual representation of continental drift.

As the first stop along the tour, you will have an opportunity to walk through the park and use the restroom if needed.

Geysir Geothermal Springs

A favorite stop along the Golden Circle is the highly active Geysir Hot Spring Area with boiling mud pits and the lively Strokkur which spouts water 30 meters (100 ft) into the air every few minutes. The area became active more than 1000 years ago and comprises more than a dozen hot spring holes. Although one can only see steam emerging from the surface of Geysir these days, its name was adopted to represent spouting hot springs all over the world.

Along the tour, the newly opened Geysir Center offers guests and travelers a chance to use the restroom and to catch some refreshments as well as lunch.

Gullfoss Waterfall

As one of the most popular attractions in all of Iceland, Gullfoss is a waterfall located in the canyon of Hvítá river in the southwest of the country. The beautiful Hvítá river rushes southward in three steps into a narrow canyon with a breathtaking roar and grandeur. Furthermore, on clear days the magnificent Langjökull glacier, Iceland's second largest glacier, can be seen in the distance.

Guests and Travelers may use the restroom and purchase food and refreshments at this location as well.

Horseback Riding at Eldhestar

Eldhestar horseback riding center offers a variety of horses and is suitable for riders of all abilities.

The last stop along the tour will be at Eldhestar, where you will have the chance to get closer to these majestic animals. Along with getting acquainted with the Icelandic horse, you will also have a taste of the countryside around Hveragerði. Children can be led by staff at Eldhestar if needed. Enjoy the day with Iceland's famous and charming animal. After a 1 hr ride, you will be brought back to Reykjavik by the Eldhestar staff.

The icelandic horse.

The famous Icelandic horse is known to be extremely versatile, good-tempered and intelligent. These small horses (not “ponies”) are particularly successful in endurance racing and therapeutic riding. They can also do well in carriage pulling, polo and barrel racing as they are reputed to be sure-footed and able to cross rough terrain. Today, the most common use for the Icelandic horse is  recreational horse riding . Icelandic farmers ride their faithful companions to round up the sheep around Iceland every year in September.

The Icelandic horse has become really popular on the international scene for being easy-going and  one  of the friendliest horses in the world . In Iceland, they are usually treated as a member of the family and have plenty of space in huge fields. The horses can live up to 40 years, but the oldest reported horse reached the age of 59.

Over the years, the Icelandic horse developed into two main strains: the Svaðastaðir and the Hornafjörður strain. Horses which are descendents of Svaðastaðir are known to have a more attractive gait while the others are larger and have great endurance.

It is possible to meet Icelandic horses all around Iceland, along the Ring Road or other famous routes such as the  Golden Circle . Although taking pictures is authorized, it is forbidden to feed them or pet them if you don’t have the permission from their owners. Also be mindful not to stop in the middle of the road or on the side if there is nowhere to stop safely. It is a great experience to approach these wonderful creatures, but it has to be done  properly . Also, do not cross over the fence to go on the field which is a private property.

It is a great experience to approach these wonderful creatures, but it has to be done  properly . Also, do not cross over the fence to go on the field which is a private property.

The History of the Icelandic horse dates back to the settlement of the island  between 860 and 935 AD . As the first Viking settlers came to Iceland from Norway, they could only bring a small number of livestock on the boats, so they probably took their best animals. This means that the Icelandic horses have their origin in a herd of preselected and high quality individuals who managed to survive a rough trip across the Atlantic Ocean. Other sources believe that the Vikings brought their smallest horses to have more space on the boats. Once on the island, they served as the most indispensable servant for the first Icelanders in this wild unknown country.

Since then, no more horses from foreign countries have been allowed in Iceland, resulting in a  pure breed for over a thousand years . That is the reason why nowadays in Iceland there is only one breed of horse: the Icelandic Horse. The horses originally imported were mostly from Germanic descent and are the ancestors of Shetland, Highland and Connemara ponies. They also show some genetic similarities to the Mongolian horse, which arrived in Scandinavia through Russia.

icelandic pony tours

In History, quality Icelandic horses were highly demanded for practical purposes but also as a status symbol. The horses were present in the very early History. Indeed, they are mentioned in the  Book of Settlements , for example when the chieftain Sela-Þórir established his settlement where his horse decided to rest. Horses were really important for warriors, who treated them with great respect. Vikings used to bury their dead with their personal belongings, the useful things that they would need to make their journey to the other world. People with the highest rank in society could bring more valuable goods. Some powerful Vikings such as chieftains were allowed to have their faithful horse buried with them.

Icelandic horses were also well known in the  Norse mythology . Many Gods owned horses that played important roles in the Sagas during battles. For instance, Óðinn had a eight-legged horse, capable of flying, named Sleipnir. According to the first Icelandic book of laws, stealing a horse from someone was punishable by banishment. Convicted thieves were outlawed and during the Viking age, all outlaws could be legally killed on sight.

The Icelandic horse was always part of the culture. It has also been an integral part of the workforce in the last century, mainly used for transport. For the last decades, the horses were mostly used for breeding and leisure riding, as well as traveling and competition purpose. The horse are not anymore essential for warriors but for farmers to round up the sheep annually in the Highlands. Nowadays, there are about  80,000 horses  in Iceland, a country with only 330,000 people.

The Icelandic horse is one of the purest horse breed in the world. Studies revealed that the Icelandic horse is descendent from an ancient breed of horses that is now  c ompletely extinct outside of Iceland , where it has been preserved thanks to isolation. For over 1,000 years, there has not been any genetic input from other breeds.

In  982 AD , following a disappointing attempt to crossbreed the Icelandic horse with oriental breeds, the Viking Parliament forbade every horse imports to Iceland to prevent the degeneration and the loss of the livestock. Since that day, no horse can enter the country at all.

On the other hand, once a horse leaves Iceland, for competitions for instance,  it can never return . Icelanders who are going to international competitions never take their best horse as they will have to sell the horse used for the competition afterwards. The best horses are kept in Iceland for breeding and national competitions.

The total population of Icelandic horses in the world is estimated to be  over 250,000 . A substantial population is growing abroad, especially in Europe and North America. The tiny horses have incredible adaptation skills and are comfortable in the glacial climates of Greenland and Alaska, as well as down South in Australia and New Zealand. There is an International Federation of Icelandic horses, counting with 18 countries around the world.

Due to the geographical isolation of the country, there are very few horse diseases in Iceland, which means no vaccination needed. The regulations about importation of horse riding gear are  very strict . When coming to Iceland, it is forbidden for the travelers to bring along used leather riding equipment such as gloves or boots. If one wants to bring his own equipment like helmet, it is mandatory to disinfect all gear.

They may be short, but still, they are not ponies. If one calls the Icelandic horses “ponies”, he/she will not make local friends. Icelanders are really proud of their   small but strong  horses, just like their country. The horses are squat and muscular. During the winter time, they have a long shaggy fur.

Icelandic horses tend to be around  132 to 142 cm tall  (52 to 56 inches) to the withers and weigh from 330 to 380 kg (730 and 840 lb). According to the international rules, most horse breeds shorter the 148 cm (58 inches) are categorized as ponies. However, there are other characteristics that make a horse a pony and the Icelandic horse is right on the limit. Icelandic people will always argue about that. According to them, the horses have the genetic makeup, intelligence and strength of a horse and not a pony.

The closest relative to the Icelandic horse is the Shetland pony. The Icelandic got taller due to better feeding and selective breeding.

The Icelandic horse is  the  most colorful breed in the world , coming  in over 40 different colors, with more than 100 variations. Most of the known horse colors can be found within the breed. All the colors are allowed in the studbook and variety is even encouraged. The official breeding goal is to preserve all natural colors of the breed.

The most common colors are red (or chestnut) and black (brown), while the rarest one is the color-changing roan. In fact, Icelandic roans are also called  color-changers  because they show their real color with the summer coat and the full winter coat, but in spring and autumn, the middle layer of their coat is white. The red base color is possible when both parents give the red gene. If both parents are red, then the foal can only be red. Black horses can be either fully black, or heterozygote, which means that they have both red and black genes.

Some Icelandic people used to think that the color of a horse reflects its personality. Some horses are named after their color, such as Bleikur (pink), Gráni (grey) or Kolfaxi (black-maned). However, there is a  naming committee  for horses, which means that they can’t be named however the owners want to.

In addition to the base colors, there are many variations such as skewbald, dun, palomino, grey, silver dapple, splash-skewbald and roan. The variations are often combined, so a horse can have  several genes . Different add-ons can also be noticed such as a blaze, snip, white leg or other marks, which makes each horse unique.

The small Icelandic horse is famous for its  genuine and welcoming personality . They are among the friendliest and most adventurous horses in the world. They are smart and really quick to learn, with a great will to work. Usually, it is very easy to handle them for example during a horse ride or on the ground. The horses never had any predators on the Icelandic land, that is maybe the reason why they are so approachable and curious.

Icelandic horses adapt quickly to every given task. The same horse can be used for competition and for recreational horse riding, even for the most inexperienced ones. The versatility of the horses is a priority for breeding.

Traditionally, Icelanders favored strong horses able to  walk   long distances on hard terrain . Icelandic horses can give their all in full speed when required, but they also can stand still for hours to shelter their humans from snow storms. Horses saved their owners many times, for example by knowing where to go when the rider was lost. The tiny horses have been indispensable servants since the settlement of Iceland. As there were no roads, the horses were used for carrying goods, transporting people, providing meat, horse hair and milk.

The Icelandic horse is a unique breed as most of the horses in Iceland master  five gaits  (ways of walking), while other breeds usually can handle 3 or 4. In addition to the original walk, trot and gallop or canter, Icelandic horses have the  tölt   and the  skeið .

The breed is known worldwide for its four-beat lateral gait called the tölt, also known as the 5th gear. It is a very comfortable walk for the rider, done in such an elegant way. In fact, the horse’s hind legs have to move well under the body, carrying more weight on the hind end. The front has to rise up high and be free and loose as the horse walks. Icelandic horses manage this gait naturally, with a variation of speed. It can go from a slow gracious tölt to a very fast and extended one. The particularity of this gait is its  smoothness . Tölt is an Icelandic word, and the only word for this gait, as only Icelandic horses can do it. The tölt is more or less a speed up version of walking, but more beautiful as only one foot of the horse has to touch the ground at a time. This gait can be really useful to ride on uneven grounds as it provides a steady ride.

Skeið, also known as  flying pace , is used in pacing races. It is best described as a very rhythmic gallop. This gait is fast and smooth, some horses can even reach up to 50 km/h (30 mph). It consists of a two-beat lateral movement with suspension between footfalls. It really makes the rider feel like flying. Skeið is used for racing and only for short distances, usually for about 100-200 meters. Not every Icelandic horse can perform this pace. The horses that can manage all the five gaits are considered as the best of the breed.
