Indonesian Food: 11 Traditional Dishes You Should Eat
Indonesia consists of 17,000 islands full of different flavors and tastes. Food in Indonesia is a mix of local biodiversity and centuries of influences by the traders from India, the Middle East, and East Asia.
When traveling in Indonesia , we should bear in mind how culturally diverse and how widely stretched the country is. The west coast of Sumatra is as far as 3000 miles from the Papuan parts of the country. That is more than the width of the United States.
Naturally, the islands differ culturally, ethnically, and botanically, therefore the culinary journey through Indonesia is just as diverse. In this article, we’ll give you an insight into some of the most popular dishes of the country and set you up for a culinary treasure hunt on your trip.
A feast for all senses
A Guide To Indonesian Cuisine
Let’s start with a basic tool to use on your journey – a dictionary. Indonesia speaks 700 languages but the most common and official is Bahasa Indonesia. You will find it on all of the menus you come across.
Here are the most common items you’ll find on every Indonesian menu:
- Nasi – Rice
- Mie – Noodles
- Ayam – Chicken
- Ikan – Fish
- Babi – Pork
- Daging – Meat or Beef
- Sayur – Vegetable
- Keju – Cheese
- Sup – Soup
- Goreng – Fried
- Bakar – Grilled
- Panggang – Roasted
- Sate – Satay
- Spicy – Pedas
Indonesians have unconditional love for rice and it’s the most common staple food across the islands. But as you move east, to Sulawesi, Makassar, Maluku, and Papua you will see taro, sweet potato, or cassava more often. Quite common these days are also instant noodles and even the restaurants have them on the menu.
In the parts of the archipelago where Islam is the strongest – like Sumatra, especially Aceh, pork will never be in use. Bali, the Hindu Island, might be avoiding beef. As you move between islands you will notice all the differences in traditions and eating habits.
Sharing food is important in Indonesia
Indonesian Dining Etiquette
Meals are served family-style, with big plates and bowls placed in the middle of a table and small bowls for everybody. The meal is initiated by the father or the eldest person at the table and only then everybody helps themselves to portions of food, placing them in their bowls.
Knives are a rarity, a fork and a spoon will be used, but it’s very common to use your right bare hand to eat. For this reason Indonesian dishes many times are served warm, but not hot. If you’re not comfortable eating with your hand, it’s ok to ask for a fork, but the locals will appreciate your willingness to try their way. Remember, use only your right hand and only your fingers – don’t let the food spread all over your palm!
Homemade sambal
The Land of Spices
The treasures of Indonesia have always been spices. The Maluku Islands in particular gained popularity across the world and welcomed traders from as far as the Middle East, India, China, and eventually Europe.
Nutmeg and clove were the most important, but galangal or pandan is also native to Indonesia. Very commonly used are turmeric, coriander, black pepper, shallot, garlic, chili, and tamarind. Ginger, fresh and juicy seems to be present in every Indonesian kitchen and garden. When visiting Spice Islands , you might notice the nutmeg and cloves often spread on the plastic sheets on the road to dry (and advertise to buyers).
Sambal is an important part of Indonesian cuisine and no meal can go without it. It’s a condiment or sauce, prepared from fried garlic, chili, fermented shrimp, and other ingredients, depending on the island. Fresh diced tomato and lime juice are popular ingredients.
Sambal can be spicy or extremely spicy and there are many versions of it. A little jar of Sambal Ulek can be a lovely souvenir from Indonesia!
Bumbu is a seasoning made of (traditionally) stone-ground spices and herbs. The paste can be stir-fried with coconut oil to create an aromatic base for fried dishes.
11 Indonesian Dishes You Must Try
Without further ado, let’s take a look at the most popular national dishes and must-try specialties.
A common way of serving nasi goreng
1. Nasi Goreng
Nasi Goreng is beloved by all Indonesians fried rice.
Sounds simple but isn’t boring at all. Rice has a special place in the hearts of all Indonesians, they respect it and literally can’t live without it. Nasi Goreng is rice with bits of meat (mainly chicken and/or seafood), vegetables, spices, and eggs. There will be shallots, garlic, shrimp paste, some chili, tamarind in most cases. The rice used for nasi goreng is pre-cooked and in many households, the dish is prepared with rice leftovers from the day before.
At the restaurants and street vendors, nasi goreng will be made to order. You can choose what kind of meat (or no meat), the level of spiciness, or how you like your egg added (mixed with the dish or sunny-side-up on top).
Nasi goreng can have multiple versions. Just to give you an idea:
- Nasi goreng ayam – Chicken fried rice
- Nasi goreng ikan asin – Salted fish fried rice
- Nasi goreng cumi – Squid fried rice
- Nasi goreng keju – Cheese fried rice…
The list goes on and on.
The dish will taste differently on various islands and we encourage you to make your own nasi goreng list of discoveries!
Available every step you take
Satays are popular and present everywhere – street vendors with barbecue stands are found easily, especially if you follow the smell and the smoke. It’s believed that satays originated from Java, inspired by the traders from the Middle East, but now they are popular all across SE Asia.
The meat, diced into small bits, is seasoned or marinated before placing on the grill. You will find all options there: chicken, goat, beef, fish, tofu… Satay will be served with peanut or soy sauce and oftentimes accompanied by the rice cake called ketupat (wrapped in the palm leaf).
When buying from street vendors, simply point which skewers you’d like to have and enjoy them along with the locals. Best not to walk away after buying, as there is a big chance you will want some more.
Peanut sauce is the secret ingredient
3. Gado – Gado
A taste of Indonesia you will crave long after your journey. Gado-gado is a salad made of veggies, hard-boiled eggs, tempeh, tofu, potato, and mouth-watering peanut sauce.
You will find some cabbage, spinach, bean sprouts, and jack fruit in it, along with bitter melon, corn, mirliton, cucumber among the vegetables in gado-gado. Traditionally the vegetables are blanched or lightly boiled together and tofu and tempeh are fried separately.
The peanut sauce is the magical touch that makes the salad heavenly good. It’s creamy, but with texture, spicy, but sweet and brings all the ingredients to an exotic and surprising harmony.
Each island has a slightly different version of gado-gado. In Java, you will find a similar dish, called pecel.
Simple and healthy
4. Ikan Bakar
When a country is just many islands, fish must be a popular meal. Literally translated as roasted fish, Ikan Bakar is a simple and beautiful dish for those who like to eat healthily. Do not mistake it for an ordinary grilled fish – this dish has way more to it!
The fish will be marinated in a mix of soy sauce and coconut oil, with a combination of spices. Some of them might be tamarind, shallots, coriander, chili, galangal. The marinated fish is grilled on a charcoal fire. It comes out juicy, fresh, a little sweet, and very aromatic. It is often served with sambal or, in the east, some of the Maluku special condiments like colo-colo, with chili and tomatoes as the main ingredient.
5. Pepes Ikan (Daging or others)
Another way of preparing healthy meals in Indonesia is steaming or grilling the meat or vegetables in banana leaf wrapping. This is the meaning of the word “pepes”. Pepes Ikan will have a fish with spices inside, but it can also be anything else – daging for minced beef, ayam for chicken, tahu for tofu, and so on.
There will always be a flavor of the freshly diced shallots, garlic, chillies, coriander, turmeric, ginger, and other spices, blended with your meat or vegetable. Unwrap the leaf and find the perfect meal inside!
Tempeh is almost a staple Indonesia food
Invented by accident, a patty of fermented soybeans is nowadays a worldwide recognized delicacy and a source of protein. Raw tempeh is sold in banana leaf wrappings in any market, especially in Java.
Cuts of fried tempeh are used in salad, rice dishes, and noodles. It can be its own dish, like tempeh goreng – fried, tempeh bacem – braised in palm sugar and coconut water, tumis tempeh – stir-fried with vegetables, tempeh satay, and so on.
Give it a try once in Indonesia, tempeh found in the supermarkets around the world isn’t as tasty as the original one!
Fried chicken like nowhere else
7. Ayam Goreng
Indonesians love their chicken! And for a good reason – the most popular are free-range, small birds with strong, healthy meat, unlike any you find in other countries. An unassuming dish of fried chicken legs can turn out to be a real feast!
The meat is first marinated in the mix of local spices and deep-fried in palm or coconut oil. Juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside! There are many variants of ayam goreng across the islands, keep on trying until you find your favorite!
Soto soup street style
Soto is a soup present everywhere but originated in Java. It’s a broth served with bits of meat, boiled eggs, bean sprouts, and other vegetables. Soto Betawi in Jakarta will have meat simmered in coconut milk, and served with steamed rice.
Soto Ayam will be chicken-based, yellow from turmeric, and served with rice cake. Soto Medan has cooked and shredded meat in it, and you can expect boiled eggs, fish cakes, potato fritters, shallots, and other add-ons on top of the bowl.
Always freshly made aromatic bakso
Bakso is a meatball soup, influenced by European cuisines and similar to the traditional broth. Served with boiled egg and noodles. It’s present across most of the street food stalls as well as the majority of restaurants’ menus.
Veggies and coconut flavors in a bowl
10. Sayur Lodeh
Sayur Lodeh is a soup of various vegetables cooked in coconut milk. Those can be beans, carrots, jackfruit, eggplants, or any other. Rice cake and salted fish or meat will be served with it.
Snack or dessert?
11. Pisang Goreng
If you haven’t had a fried banana, you have not been to Indonesia. Slices of bananas or plantains are deep-fried in cooking oil. It can be battered or plain, coated in breadcrumbs or honey, or made with various other methods.
Bottom line is – pisang goreng is a part of Indonesia like the sea and volcanoes.
Simple, Spicy, Superb Cuisine
The list above only featured three types of sup (soup), but there is such a variety of them across the region, we had a hard time choosing which ones to talk about!
It would be remiss not to mention that in addition to Indonesian cuisine, the country’s coffee is also something to savor, not to mention a great way to start your day, especially with pisang goreng.
Cruising in Indonesia is a lot about diving, turquoise seas, and beautiful beaches, but as you now know, traditional Indonesian food has so much to offer visitors to this flavorful archipelago.

- 21 Best Dishes Try Indonesia
The 21 Best Dishes To Eat in Indonesia
Indonesia’s rich and plentiful natural produce, herbs, and spices give its people a certain freedom to be creative and resourceful in creating traditional recipes that are not only delicious, but also tell stories about the culture’s customs and history. From the famed Indonesian fried rice to different soups, discover the best dishes in Indonesia you should try.
Nasi goreng.
An ever-popular and versatile recipe, you can encounter the Indonesian fried rice anywhere from humble street food carts to high-end restaurants. The curious combination of savoury taste, sweetness, spiciness, and appetising greasiness make up a distinctive meal that is surprisingly simple to make. Nasi goreng uses Indonesian palm sweet soy, white rice, and whatever ingredients they can think of or are conveniently available — vegetables, egg, chicken, sausage, mutton, stink bean, and many more.
Some call gado-gado the Indonesian vegetable salad, which contains bean sprouts, long beans, spinach, potatoes, along with tofu and tempeh . The vegetables are boiled or steamed, glazed with succulent, sometimes spicy peanut sauce. Often served with compressed rice cakes, gado-gado can be quite a filling, vegetarian-friendly meal with a generous amount of nutrition.
Originating from Palembang, South Sumatra, pempek is quite popular throughout the country, both as a snack or a dish in itself. Pempek is made from filleted fish and tapioca, making the texture deliciously chewy, and then presented in several variations in additional ingredients and shapes. The pieces of pempek are eaten with a special sweet-salty-sour sauce, noodles, and sliced cucumber.
Literally means ‘sour soup’, this dish does have hints of acidity from tamarind. It contains vegetables like corn, long beans, chayote, and peanuts, soaked in the spice-rich broth. This soup usually serves as a side dish to a meat or fish meal.
The variations of satay in Indonesia is as diverse and plentiful as the cultures and ethnicities within. But basically, satay is skewered meat — chicken, mutton, beef, fish, pork, and basically anything — marinated in a special mixture of soy sauce and spices and then grilled on charcoal. The juicy skewers of satay are then topped with condiments such as peanut sauce or soy sauce with chopped chilli.
Sop Buntut or Indonesian oxtail soup is one of the most popular and lavish dishes in the archipelago. The tender, delectable chops of oxtail are simmered in a clear broth which conveys a salty, piquant taste. It also contains carrots and potatoes, served with rice, chilli, and crunchy melinjo crackers.
Rendang is one of Indonesia’s most popular and outstanding meals, originally a treat for special ceremonies in its place of origin Minangkabau. Nowadays, a mouthful of the fork-tender beef coated in special gravy sauce made with a delicate mixture of coconut and herbs can be enjoyed at Padang Restaurants, along with rice and various sauce and vegetables such as jackfruit or cassava leaves, accompanied by the famed green chilli condiment.
This fish or shrimp dumpling recipe has its roots in China, but not without its own unique revamp to suit the locals’ taste and customs. Siomay is often sold as an assortment that includes slices of tofu, potato, rolled cabbage, and hard-boiled egg, topped with peanut sauce, soy sauce, and a little chilli ketchup to taste.
Bakso, or Indonesian meatballs, are mainly made from beef and tapioca that make them both juicy and bouncy. Balls of bakso are to be put together in a bowl with rice noodles, egg noodles, some vegetables (some even add friend wonton and other fritters), before pouring the warm, savoury broth. You can add optional seasonings like soy sauce, vinegar, or a spoonful of spicy Indonesian chilli condiment.
A popular and unique recipe from Yogyakarta, this dish is an unmissable traveling experience in itself when visiting the heritage city. It consists of steamed young jackfruit with coconut milk, palm sugar, lemongrass and other herbs that make the taste distinctively sweet and pleasantly aromatic. Gudeg can be eaten with rice and other side dishes such as meat and eggs.
This soy-based side dish is a nutritious and convenient protein source that has recently become popular among vegetarians around the world. Tempeh is basically fermented soybean cake that can be cooked however you want — deep-fried, pan-fried, grilled, or steamed. Tempeh can also be used as an additional ingredient for various recipes, including vegetables and soup recipes.
Nasi Uduk is made from white rice cooked with coconut milk and a mixture of herbs, making the flavour curiously aromatic and hearty. Nasi Uduk is a popular breakfast dish often sold with side dishes such as eggs, potato cakes, or fried rice noodle.
The Indonesian beef ribs soup has juicy, succulent meat in aromatic, flavourful broth that conveys a unique taste from the mixture of herbs and meat. Due to the long cooking process, you can easily scrape off the meat from the rib bones and enjoy its tender texture along with the luscious soup.
Babi Guling
This popular Balinese dish is basically roasted pork seasoned with various herbs. Originally, this was a communal dish served during traditional performances and ceremonies. A special mixture of traditional herbs and spices are stuffed and greased all over the meat before it’s roasted whole, resulting in a thorough flavourful taste that makes the dish unforgettable.
Soto Betawi
Different cultures in Indonesia have their own version of soto (traditional Indonesian broth), but Soto Betawi is one of the people’s favourites. Like many other variations of soto , this one contains beef meat and innards. What makes Soto Betawi different is the creamy broth made from coconut milk, cow’s milk, and other spices.
Coto Makassar
Another popular soto variant is the one that originated from Makassar, South Sulawesi. This dish has become the local pride of the region, claiming popularity throughout the archipelago. Coto Makassar has a dark and rather thick broth that tastes nutty and a little sour, with beef meat and innards inside. The long process of boiling evens the taste and makes the meat so tender and juicy in your mouth.
Originating from the Aceh region in Indonesia, this noodle dish is infamous for its strong and spicy taste, with thick broth that almost tastes like curry. It has an intricate mixture of spices that includes a lot of peppers, cumin, and other hot ingredients. The recipe usually uses thick and yellow noodle, served with various toppings from vegetables to mutton.
Indonesian chicken porridge is made from rice, and then seasoned with a savoury sauce. If you’re buying one from a street food cart, you’ll see how the porridge is prepared with various toppings like shredded chicken, soybeans, celery, and fried onions. This cheap, popular, and convenient breakfast dish is often sold with skewers of chicken innards.
Ayam Taliwang
Ayam Taliwang is a grilled chicken dish from Lombok. The recipe uses kampong spring chicken for a firmer texture, smeared with an abundance of chilli paste and a mix of seasoning then grilled or fried. The appearance and aroma of a freshly-grilled Ayam Taliwang is very appetising, but brace yourself, because it’s one of the spiciest dishes you’ll ever taste.
Woku is an impassioned dish from Sulawesi, Indonesia. Using the region’s rich spices and herbs, a seasoning sauce is fixed, and portions of fish or chicken are boiled with the yellow-ish sauce. The sauce has a uniquely spicy taste with fresh flavour from the herbs, not to mention the tender and savoury fish or chicken meat that convey the same crispness and electrifying flavour.

An Introduction to the World’s Favourite Training Dinghy
The Optimist sailing dinghy, often referred to as the “Opti,” is a popular and widely recognized sailboat designed for young sailors, typically aged 8 to 15 years old. It is one of the most popular boats used for introductory and competitive youth sailing programs worldwide.
Compact, Lightweight and Stable
The Optimist dinghy is known for its simplicity, durability, and ease of use, making it an excellent choice for beginners. Its design features a pram-like hull with a single sail, and it is typically sailed by a single person. The boat’s compact size and lightweight nature allow young sailors to handle it easily both on and off the water.
Training Young Sailors around the World
One of the reasons behind the Optimist’s popularity is its global recognition. It is used extensively in youth sailing programs and regattas around the world, providing a consistent platform for young sailors to develop their skills and compete against their peers. The boat’s widespread adoption means that there is a large community of Optimist sailors, which facilitates camaraderie and competition within the sport.
Pram Shaped Hull provides Stability
In terms of stability, the Optimist is designed to be very stable and forgiving, making it an excellent choice for beginners. Its pram-shaped hull and low center of gravity provide stability and make it less prone to capsizing, even in moderate winds. This stability allows young sailors to build their confidence and skills while feeling secure on the water.
Start your Sailing Journey in an Optimist
Overall, the Optimist sailing dinghy is an ideal boat for young sailors who are just starting their sailing journey. Its popularity, simplicity, and stability make it a widely recommended choice for youth sailing programs and a fantastic platform for learning and enjoying the sport of sailing.
Optimist Sailing in the UK
The Optimist is a single-handed dinghy, designed to teach young children how to sail in safety and up to a high standard. There are around 65 active Optimist Flotillas around the country based at local sailing clubs on the coast, inland lakes and reservoirs.” https://www.facebook.com/iocauk/
Optimist Portsmouth Yardstick
The Portsmouth Yardstick is used to calculate the performance of mixed classes of boats in a handicap race. The lower the PY the faster the boat. For illustration – a Dart 18 has a PY of 832 , a Laser 1 ILCA7 has a PY of 1100 and a Topper has a PY of 1365 . More information and latest PY numbers can be found here – RYA PY
- Optimist PY number is currently 1642

If you can't find one here... try ebay.
It might not be the first place that springs to mind when buying or selling a dinghy - but it's definitely worth looking. We've found some great boats on eBay. My last Topper Topaz Race X came from eBay and it was £400 cheaper than similar elsewhere. Click the banner below to browse the latest listings. People sometimes don't know precisely what it is they're selling ... try a few searches using different phrases. Start with the obvious - CLASS - eg. Laser or Topper or SuperNova etc.

Hatteras Sailing
encouraging youth sailing and competitive opportunities
Optimist Class Sailboats
Why does Hatteras Sailing sail the Optimist Class?
The Optimist Class sailboat has been the standard for youth and junior sailing programs for decades. The class was launched in 1947, and has a long history as the training boat on which the world’s best sailors learn the basics. The boat was designed and first built in Clearwater, Florida but quickly traveled to Europe and throughout the world. The International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA) was formed in 1965 and remains one of the most active racing classes in sailing. There are many reasons for a juniors program to adopt the Optimist Class as the training boat for young first time sailors.
Optimist is a deceivingly humble class. An uninformed observer may look at an optimist and see a little kids pram, but an optimist is a fairly high performance little dinghy, and the rigging is cleverly adjustable. From that angle, the Optimist is the unsung hero of junior sailing, and just skirts the line between safety, simplicity, and performance.
Hatteras Sailing chooses to sail the optimist for the same reasons thousands of other sailing and yacht clubs worldwide:
Availability of boats, gear, and competition
Sailboats are expensive. They are expensive to own and expensive to maintain. For a community sailing program, like Hatteras Sailing, it is a prudent decision to choose a boat that is very popular with a long history. This means there is a larger market of used gear and boats which is more affordable for a community supported program.
Many opportunities for racing locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally
Because the Optimist Class has such a long and well established class association (IODA), there are many more opportunities to sail against other competitive sailors in an Opti versus other training dinghy designs. Optimist is just the standard worldwide. If any of our sailors show exceptional talent, more opportunities for more competitive racing helps our club develop that talent.
It is ideal for a sailor to remain in the Opti class as long as physically possible.
The IODA allows sailors to remain in the optimist class up to 15 years of age. The relative simplicity of the Opti class allows sailors to focus on understanding the fundamentals of sailing – wind, current, physics, weather, and the physical and mental multitasking required to make expert sailors. The competition is intense, worldwide sailing opportunities are prevalent, and the sailors learn and practice racing tactics and strategies becoming experts at very young ages. By the time a sailor is ready to graduate Opti class, these fundamental skills should be well developed allowing the sailor to transition into team sailing and more boat complexity on a strong foundation of more fundamental skills.
What gear and equipment does an Optimist Class sailboat need to be competitive?
There is a fair amount of gear an Optimist sailor needs for his/her boat to be legal for racing, but also to be competitive. In this article, we are going to outline the rigging and gear. There many other accessories such as watches, wind instruments, etc which are legal in racing that are not particularly unique to Opti sailing and, while nice to have, those will not be covered here.

Hatteras Sailing currently only has one dolly which we share among all 8 of our boats. Within this fall season, it is our goal to raise enough funds to have a dolly for each boat. Our team also needs a travel trailer which will hold all of our competition Optis, gear, dollies, and rigs.
How much does it cost to buy and equip a new Optimist Class sailboat to perform at the highest level?
A brand new Pro Level Opti equipped for international level racing with a full set of gear and accessories can be purchased new for around $5000. Club level boats can be found for less and the largest manufacturer also sells re-certified refurbished hulls in good as new condition.
A sailboat “class” is a written specification agreed and maintained by the sailors of the class. Most sailboat class associations will allow any builder to manufacture to the class standard, and provide certification services to builders who wish to produce sailboats for the racing class. This is true of the Opti Sailboat Class.
There are many manufacturers for the Optimist class, and the competitive differences between boats are fairly minimal. However, the gear, sails, and rigging can be a significant difference to a sailor’s performance. Currently, our club has a set of 7 borrowed optimists that belong to the Colington Yacht Club and most were built by McGlaughlin.
Many clubs build their own Optis and request a certification of their boats. There are advantages to a ‘build your own program’. Clubs may choose to build because it offers a significant bonding and educational experience for both the parents and sailors. An Opti can be built in wood or in fiberglass. If you build an Opti from fiberglass, it is helpful to have a certified mold and then each boat is racing class. The builder of the mold gets a manufacturer’s certificate and issued a builder number, etc.
Owning your gear and accessories
Our club has a set of 8 hulls (7 borrowed, 1 owned) in pretty good condition and well maintained. Our club eventually does need to purchase its own boats.
Currently, sailors in the Hatteras Sailing program do not need to buy a boat to participate or to be competitive. However, as our sailors improve and succeed in regional racing, having a really great boat that belongs to you is something that every competitive sailor eventually wants. Sailboats like Optis resell for pretty good value. A great Opti purchased for $5000 may sell in 7 years for $2500 – $3000.
When a sailor makes it onto the Hatteras Sailing Invitational Team, they earn the right to choose a club hull and label that hull with their own name. In essence, for as long as they remain on the team, that boat is assigned to the sailor, and that sailor should race, equip, and maintain that the boat as their own.
Equipping your boat
There is considerable wear and tear on gear that is used during practice, etc, and keeping a secondary set of gear preserved for racing is a good strategy. This could mean purchasing or making your sailor a new set of racing sails, boards, rigging, and even spars that they only use for racing.
Any personally owned racing gear belongs to the sailor and is not used by other club members during practice or scrimmage. It can be kept at home and preserved in good condition. Accessories and gear can be augmented and improved by the sailor’s family, preserved in very good racing condition, and sold later to another sailor. All our invitational sailors are invited to have their own gear, but not required to do so.

As you step into this conservation and recreation park, you’re greeted by a diverse world where wildlife roams freely. The park’s commitment to eco-tourism and animal conservation makes every encounter not only exciting but also educational, striking a perfect balance between adventure and awareness.
Unique Habitats and Wildlife Encounters
Taman Safari Indonesia is a mosaic of habitats, each offering a glimpse into different ecosystems. The Baby Zoo area is a delightful spot where you can witness the charm of young wildlife. Nearby, the Australian Outback habitat lets you encounter gray kangaroos and even a kookaburra if luck is on your side. But the highlight is undoubtedly the Big Cat Center, where majestic felines like white tigers grace their habitats with regal poise, separated by clear glass walls – creating an experience akin to walking through an underwater world, but with big cats!
These enclosures are not just spaces for animals; they are carefully crafted environments that replicate their natural habitats, ensuring their comfort and wellbeing. This setup offers visitors a unique chance to observe and understand the nuances of each species in an environment that closely mirrors their natural homes.
Live Shows and Educational Entertainment
At Taman Safari, entertainment meets education in a spectacular array of live shows. From the elephant show that unfolds in the Plaza Gajah to the thrilling tiger show, each performance is designed to educate visitors about wildlife while providing an engaging experience. These shows are not just about showcasing animal abilities but are thoughtfully crafted to convey messages about conservation, habitat loss, and the importance of coexisting with nature.
As you watch these majestic animals showcase their natural behaviors, you’re not just a spectator but a participant in a learning journey. These shows, whether it’s the agility of tigers or the playful antics of dolphins, offer insights into the lives of these creatures, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding among visitors of all ages.
Interactive Animal Experiences
The safari park’s interactive zones offer a chance to get up close with various animals. From feeding friendly kangaroos to observing the curious behaviors of Komodo dragons on Komodo Dragon Island, these interactions are carefully supervised to ensure both visitor and animal safety. The Primate Center is another highlight, where the intelligence and agility of our closest animal relatives can be observed in a naturalistic setting.
These interactive experiences are more than just fun; they’re an opportunity to connect with wildlife on a personal level. They serve as a powerful reminder of the interconnectivity of our ecosystems and the vital role each species plays in maintaining the delicate balance of our natural world.

Hungry for data: Tackling food insecurity in rural Indonesia
Facebook Twitter Print Email
Kornelia Icha has never gone hungry or got close to starvation. Very few people do in Indonesia with its fertile soil and tropical climate. But, until a recent intervention by the National Food Agency, her diet consisted mostly of rice, corn, onions and the occasional meat dish.
“I was not aware that vegetables were that important or how to grow them,” said the 25-year-old farmer from Idas in West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. “Now I do.”
She, along with 50 of her neighbours in this village among the rolling hills of northwest Borneo, received vegetable seeds and the opportunity to participate in a training course on how to grow tomatoes, cucumbers and peanuts, foods that should make their families less prone to diseases.
Evidence, not intuition
Idas was one of just four out of 160 villages in the district targeted for government intervention thanks to data-based policymaking. Using a rigorous, data-focused methodology developed by the UN’s World Food Programme ( WFP ), the district’s Food Security Office published a recommendation to all local government offices to concentrate efforts on these settlements.
It supported the government’s aim of providing targeted assistance to prevent stunting, a condition to which chronic.
“Without research and hard data, even the best-intentioned attempts to decrease food security vulnerability are like a shot in the dark,” said Nur Affandi, Head of the Food Security Office in Singgau, the regional capital. “In order to target interventions correctly and create policy that really makes a difference, we must base our work on evidence, not intuition.”
Much of that evidence is presented through the Food Security and Vulnerability Atlas. Developed jointly by WFP and the National Food Agency, the atlas visualises key food security data for all 514 cities and districts in Indonesia, a vast country of 280 million people.
On it, each subdistrict and village is given one of six priority classes of vulnerability, based on indicators such as access to running water, the amount of agricultural land per person and access to a medical facility.
The composite index takes into account these various indicators and, based on that, automatically identifies which villages and subdistricts are vulnerable to food insecurity.
In 2019, Idas fell into the priority one or “highly food insecure” category. Since then, the dirt road connecting it to main roads in the area has been partially repaired to ease villagers’ access to markets and therefore improve their overall economic condition.
Seeds have been distributed to families to help them vary their diets along with pepper plants to diversify their income away from reliance solely on rubber and palm oil. The few families who did not have clean running water are now hooked up to the village’s water system.
The result? Idas is no longer considered highly food insecure.
Thank science
“A major improvement,” a proud Mr. Affandi said with a broad smile. “It’s not thanks to us; it’s thanks to science.”
His approach of data-based policymaking is seen as a pilot to emulate, particularly in poorer areas of the country, such as East Nusa Tenggara province and its capital city, Kupang.
A Regent’s Decree prepared in 2022 by the Kupang district government, the Regional District Development Planning Office and WFP mandated all local authorities, including those in charge of health care, agriculture and social support, to use the Food Security and Vulnerability Atlas to target their food and social support. The province has over 309 subdistricts, 37 per cent of which were found to be vulnerable to food insecurity in 2021.
In East Nusa Tenggara, more than 20 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line, and nearly 40 per cent of children under age five are stunted. Stunting prevents a child from reaching their full cognitive and physical potential.
Countrywide, just over 20 per cent of children under age five were stunted in 2022.
“Using the Atlas for planning enables us to refine our focus and target food insecurity interventions accordingly,” says Marthen Rahakbauw, Head of the Kupang District Regional Development Planning Office.
While the progress is tangible, a lot of work remains to be done.
“WFP is supporting the National Food Agency to work with other cities and districts to also mandate the use of the Food Security and Vulnerability Atlas,” said Jennifer Rosenzweig, the acting Country Director for WFP in Indonesia: “We need more examples like Sanggau and Kupang districts to systematically reach people who are most vulnerable to food insecurity across the country.”
For Kornelia Icha, who says she can only afford to eat what she and her relatives can grow themselves, the vegetables make a major difference in her diet.
Her and her husband’s base income comes from selling the milky latex they extract from around 200 rubber trees; this earns them around 60,000 Indonesian rupiah ($4) a day, which is supplemented by income from odd jobs and the occasional sale of peanuts.
“We are not poor,” she said. “But, we could certainly never eat as many vegetables as we do now after we started growing them.”

7 things you NEED to do in Moscow this winter
1. Get your skates on
People at the opening of the Street Rink outdoor skating rink in Gorky Park, Moscow.
Young or old, sporty or couch potato, it doesn’t matter – ice skating is THE quintessential winter activity in which pretty much everyone Muscovite partakes. For that reason, Russians tend to be quite good at skating, but don’t let that put you off if you’re a beginner. Public ice skating is more about embracing the crisp winter mornings here than hardcore sporting endeavor, so expect high spirits and friendly atmospheres.
What’s more, there are a staggering 45 year-round skating rinks to choose from in Moscow. Gorky Park’s rink is a must-see that allows for pleasant strolling, coffee drinking, and art viewing afterwards. The VDNH rink is also worth checking out for the park that surrounds it, offering majestic light shows, fountains, and Soviet relics. For a more open-plan skating arena, head to Sokolniki Park, where you’ll find a whopping 5,400 square meter rink.
2. Sweat out the winter blues
Sandunovsky baths
We challenge you to find a more relaxing atmosphere than a Russian banya . You simply won’t – this tradition will warm up your body and your soul. Sure, being practically boiled in a firewood sauna and then hit with a birch tree while half-drunk might not be everyone’s idea of fun, but trust us, they’re missing out on this unique detox.
Check out the Sanduny bathhouse for the most jaw-dropping Russian relaxation experience imaginable, characterized by palatial columns and mosaics, as well as stylish cold water pools for you to dive into after your beat-down. Happy steaming!
3. Light up your life
Teatralnaya Square
Moscow city center’s mesmerizing light display is not only the pride of the city, but of half of Russia too, who travel to the capital specifically for the luminous spectacle. In the lead up to New Year, the areas around Red Square, Teatralnaya Square, Nikolskaya Street, Pushkin Square, and Tverskoy Boulevard become a neon ocean.
The lights are a significant annual investment for the Moscow council, not least because they tend to replace the lights with new ones year on year, but it’s usually deemed worth it by admiring onlookers and tourists. If this display doesn’t get you in the festive spirit, nothing will.
4. Shout your lungs out at an ice hockey match
If there’s one sport Russians are particularly passionate about, it’s ice hockey. Go and experience the fierce athleticism, frequent on-rink fights, and rowdy crowds for yourself, and you’ll see what all the fuss is about. In contrast to Russian football matches, where there’s often little more than atmospheric novelty to be had, the country can take pride in having world-class hockey players, whose quality will be immediately obvious.
The best place for a match is the slick 12,100-seater VTB Ice Palace, home to CSKA’s ice hockey outfit.
5. Step back in time
Woman pulls a sled with a child on frozen pond in Moscow, Russia
Fancy a glimpse of the Orthodox Christmas atmosphere as it was in the Russian Empire? Look no further than Novodevichy Convent , a picturesque, snow-covered religious haven with a history stretching back five centuries. Initially used as a fortress for noblewomen, this stunning riverside ensemble is now a functioning monastery and peaceful cloister that boasts four stunning cathedrals, Kremlin-like walls, and a spectacular icon collection. Holy, placid, and serene, the convent is a uniquely antiquate enclave that’s night and day from the bustling modernity that surrounds it.
6. Wallow in the snow
A view of a rebuilt 18th century palace in Moscow's Tsaritsyno Park.
Sometimes, you don’t need anything particularly ambulative to feel at home in a city. In fact, nothing embodies Moscow’s winter wonderland better than a mere stroll in one of its stately parks, sure to be piled high with endless snow dunes throughout the winter.
For a pleasant outing beloved by Muscovites and tourists alike, check out the grandiose Tsaritsyno Park , where nature peacefully co-exists alongside tsarist palatial pomp. The more sizeable Kolomenskoye Park is also worth checking out for a longer excursion that packs in medieval wooden architecture, never-ending rows of trees, and a postcard-ready river view.
However, if you want to really get off the beaten track and experience the winter pristine snow, head further outside the city limits to one of Moscow’s forests – Izmailovsky Park, Timiryazevsky Park, or Elk Island National Park, for example (all accessible by metro).
7. Get festive at the city’s many Christmas markets
Sip on a mulled wine, soak up the bright lights, haggle over a matryoshka doll with Putin’s face on it. Moscow’s Christmas markets are an absolutely essential tourist experience, with the most popular fair set up right on the Kremlin’s doorsteps on Red Square. Indeed, those quaint stalls in the heart of the city take some beating against the backdrop of St. Basil’s Cathedral and the illuminated GUM shopping center. There are some other cool festive spots throughout the city, though – Gorky Park, for one, will be decked out in lights and international food stalls, while the Izmailovo Kremlin offers an unmissable experience in the world of kitsch souvenir shopping from vodka to pottery, to (sort of) authentic samovars.
