Iona cruise ship guide – all you need know to plan your cruise with p&o.

Planning a cruise on Iona? Discover everything you need to know – and a few tips – for a great cruise on this wonderful ship.

In 2021, P&O Cruises launched its most innovative ship yet, Iona.

A family-friendly ship, Iona is designed to bring the outdoors in. Whether that is the stunning scenery of the Norwegian Fjords or the sparkling ocean views of The Mediterranean.

At that time she was the largest cruise ship ever built for the UK cruise market, representing the start of a new era for P&O Cruises.

So, if you are planning to book a cruise (or maybe already have) on Iona you are in the right place to find out all you need to know about this wonderful ship.

Cruising on Iona

Overview of Iona

Built in Germany by Meyer Werft, Iona is an excellence class ship.

Designed to be more environmentally friendly, Iona is powered by liquified natural gas (LNG) making her one of the greenest cruise ships in the world.

Measuring 344 meters in length and weighing in at 84,700 tons, she was the largest ship in the P&O Cruises fleet until her sister ship, Arvia, joined in the fun and took that honour by a whisker.

At full capacity, she can host 5,200 passengers and 1,800 crew. Don’t let the size put you off though. With 15 guest decks and a wide range of features including bars, restaurants, swimming pools, hot tubs, theatres and lounges, Iona rarely feels too crowded.

All cruise ships have a naming ceremony and Iona was no exception. The virtual event held in May 2021 took place at her home port of Southampton and featured a performance by Gary Barlow. Dame Irene Hays, godmother to Iona, named the ship.

Iona’s maiden voyage was delayed until August 2021 due to the pandemic but I think it is safe to say she was more than worth the wait!

Where does Iona sail?

Between April and September, Iona cruises the Norwegian Fjords on two slightly different 7 night itineraries. Both depart from Southampton.

At the start and end of the season, the cruises have a port of call in Alesund. In the middle of the season this is replaced with a stop in Hellesylt (and a cruise by the UNESCO World Heritage site of Geirangerfjord ).

image of iona cruise ship docked in the Norwegian Fjords. Ship is surround by scenery such as mountains and trees

The rest of the year Iona heads to the Mediterranean for some winter sun. There are two itineraries, the Canary Islands and Spain and Portugal. Cruises are usually 14 nights and depart from Southampton.

If neither of those destinations appeal then look out for the odd Northern European cruise.

These seven night cruises usually visit Hamburg, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge . The December one provides the opportunity to visit some European Christmas Markets while the ones during the school holidays provide the chance for a family break.

What are the cabins on Iona like?

There are 2,614 cabins on Iona. So whatever your style or budget there will be a cabin for you.

The configuration of cabins is

  • 811 inside cabins – ideal if you prefer to explore the ship rather than spend time in your cabin
  • 174 sea view cabins – similar to an inside cabin but with a window or porthole for a bit of natural light and a sea view
  • 1,266 balcony & 120 deluxe balcony cabins – the type of cabin you probably imagine when thinking of a cruise, with your own outdoor space and fabulous sea views. Cabins low down on the ship have sheltered balconies.
  • 95 Conservatory mini suites – a first for P&O, these cabins have a conservatory area with floor-to- ceiling windows between the balcony and cabin area. These allow you to relax and enjoy the views whatever the weather.
  • 24 Suite – a VIP experience with large cabins, bathrooms with a full-size whirlpool bath, inclusive room service and a butler on hand

There are also 22 single cabins (both inside and balcony) and two family cabins .

image of the inside of inside on Iona cruise ship with a double bed in the foreground and a sofa and dressing table area and balcony in the distance

All cabins have a fresh and modern design. They are very comfortable, so much so I would happily have moved in after my last cruise.

If you are a couple or travelling with friends you should find you have enough space. You just need to be organised and not too messy. Some cabins can accommodate three or four people but I’d make sure you are very good friends if you take that option. It could be a very long week or two otherwise!

Dining on Iona

Many cruise ships traditionally offered a club dining concept, this is where you have a set time and table to eat at each night.

While this has many advantages, such as always knowing you have a time slot and table to eat at it is something that can also be a bit off-putting, particularly to new cruisers.

With such a modern ship, it is perhaps no surprise that P&O Cruises have taken a different approach.

Iona the first ship in the P&O fleet to offer freedom dining. This means you can dine where and when you want. There are no set times for the main dining rooms. You just turn up when you want to eat.

Of course, on such a large ship there will be some times that will be more popular than others. So, you may have to get in a queue via the My Holiday booking page or be given a pager which will alert you when a table is ready.

But generally speaking, you will have the flexibility to eat when you want.

Bars and restaurants on Iona

With 30 bars and restaurants on Iona , you are spoilt for choice of where to eat and drink. In fact, your biggest problem will probably be trying to find time to experience them all. I know I struggled!

Many of the dining options are included in your cruise fare. This includes the four main dining rooms which are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the Horizon Restaurant, which is the buffet. Again this is open pretty much the whole day and also has afternoon tea cakes and a late-night buffet on offer.

In another new innovation for Iona, a street food area called The Quays was introduced.

Here you can get burgers and chips, fish and chips and noodles. It is also a great place for breakfast. This is also included in your cruise fare.

Image of a street food area on a cruise ship with three food stands on one side and a large seating area on the other

As you might expect there are plenty of speciality restaurants covering everything from a steak house to elegant fine dining onboard. Many of the P&O Cruises favourites such as The Epicurean and Sindhu make a return too.

Some of these restaurants are included in your cruise fare with the odd extra surcharge for some items. Others have a cover charge.

Dress code on Iona

There is no strict dress code on Iona . It is a little more informal than perhaps you might expect for a cruise.

P&O recommend smart casual for their restaurants, so dressing like you would for a night out at home is fine. No need to go out and buy a new wardrobe.

There is usually one celebration night (like a formal black tie night) on a week-long cruise and two on a fortnight-long cruise. This is the night to turn on the glamour with your finest outfit.

The main dining rooms and some restaurants and bars will have a black tie dress code from around 6pm on this night.

On my last cruise, I spent the late afternoon in the Crow’s Nest bar and the staff came around about 5pm to let everyone know the dress code would be changing at 6pm so you get plenty of warning.

If dressing up is not your thing and you just want a chilled out holiday, then don’t worry. Not all entries or venues onboard require black tie on celebration night so you can still find a spot to eat and drink at.

Entertainment on Iona

Since I started cruising I’ve had a few friends ask me if I get bored onboard a cruise ship. Having nothing to do and being stuck on a ship seems to be one of the reasons people think a cruise is not for them.

It’s safe to say you will not have that problem on Iona. There are a wealth of entertainment options , from live music performances and spectacular theatre productions to silent discos and trivia quizzes. In fact, the biggest problem I’ve found is having enough time to fit everything in.

I’ve seen P&O Cruises say that Iona is designed so that you can’t do everything in a week and they are not wrong! Particularly if you have an itinerary with a lot of port calls.

During the day, you can enjoy everything thing from trivia quizzes to destination talks to cookery demonstrations.

However, it is the evening that Iona really comes alive.

In the SkyDome, with its stunning domed glass roof, you can watch some breathtaking aerial shows while in the Club House you can dance the night away to a cover band.

image of aerial artists suspend on a hoop mid air as part of a cruise ship entertainment show

If theatre shows are more your style, you won’t be disappointed with the Headliners Theatre productions or if you prefer settling down to watch a movie with some popcorn, you’ll be at home in the four-screen cinema.

One of the popular nights onboard is the silent disco. Usually held in the Grand Atrium or SkyDome, it’s almost as much fun to watch as take part.

Health and wellbeing

There are plenty of options to keep your health and fitness ticking over while on board Iona.

From a well-equipped gym to a sports court and walking/jogging track one one of the top decks you can be as active as you want.

For a slower pace (well you are on holiday), there is a spa with a hydrotherapy pool, steam rooms and a range of treatments on offer.

Shops on Iona

I know you are on holiday and a bit of retail therapy is probably the last thing on your mind. However, a little wander around the shops can easily pass a bit of time on a sea day (and is an opportunity to stretch your legs).

There are 12 shops and four standalone boutiques selling everything from jewellery and accessories to fashion and beauty.

The boutiques include the first Mulberry at sea. If you are a handbag lover like me you might want to avoid the one, it is far too tempting!

Don’t miss the gift shop selling branded P&O Cruises items. Whether you want a scaled down replica of Iona or one of the (very) popular teddy bears, you can pick up a great memento to remember your holiday by.

Tips for cruising on Iona

  • If you would like to eat in the speciality restaurants then try to book them as soon as possible. Tables fill up very quickly. Grab a cuppa or drink on your first afternoon and sit down and make a few bookings. You can always cancel if you change your mind later in the week.
  • The 710 Club is very popular so make sure you book that early if you wish to visit. If it is fully booked, don’t panic. Once onboard, see if there is a standby queue for the show you’d like attend. If there are any no shows you may get in.
  • The Horizon restaurant can get very busy at peak times. It is often easier to get table at either end of the seating area so head there if you are unable to get a seat.
  • The Quays is a great alternative to the Horizon restaurant for breakfast.
  • The shows in the SkyDome are very popular. No surprise there as they are pretty spectacular. Head there early to make sure you get a seat. Otherwise it will be standing room only

With a strong focus on food provenance, it’s time to taste your way around the southern and eastern Mediterranean with authentic dishes and sharing platters at The Olive Grove. Mouthwatering aperitifs and a well-chosen list of regional wines complete the menu and add to the relaxed experience. The Olive Grove is the ideal venue for intimate dinners or a celebratory meal – with options to eat in the restaurant or in the conservatory area.

The Grand Atrium

The Grand Atrium is the beating heart of Iona; a lively signature space that encapsulates the spirit of the ship. The architecturally impressive space sits on decks 6, 7 and 8 and boasts a contemporary design that brings in uninterrupted panoramic sea views and natural light.

As one of four primary entertainment spaces on board, the Grand Atrium offers lots to see and do around the clock. By day, it’s a place to meet, dine, relax, be entertained or simply watch the world go by; by night, it’s an immersive destination venue, balancing intimate spaces with larger social areas. The space seamlessly transitions between day and night through lighting and sound.

The Glass House is dedicated to the love of fine wine and great food. The premium wine bar, located on deck 7, has an impressive wine list curated by award-winning wine expert and P&O Cruises Food Hero Olly Smith and offers a sophisticated environment in which to enjoy breakfast, a light lunch, a leisurely glass of wine or an evening meal with family or newfound friends.

Wine connoisseurs are well taken care of: Cellar Door at The Glass House offers wine talks, tastings and wine-pairing dinners. You can also enjoy the Grand Atrium's aerial circus performances, as well as views out to the horizon.

Emerald Bar

For evening glamour, the stylish Emerald Bar on deck 6 offers a relaxed living-room feel with a Covent Garden-style buss. With a large menu of premium cocktails, it's an ideal location for pre-dinner drinks or as a late-night bar. Enjoy pop-up entertainment from mid-morning and impromptu aerial circus performances from early evening. Spectacular sea views add to the ambience.

Salcombe Gin Distillery

Iona’s exciting collaboration with Salcombe Gin

We’re collaborating with award-winning gin distiller, Salcombe Gin, to create exclusive gins on Iona! Infused with the rich fruit-trading heritage of the beautiful coastal town of Salcombe, Salcombe Gin shares our zest for adventure and discovering new and exciting flavours. Together, we’re creating a gin recipe that’s tailored to the bold and daring spirit of Iona.

The very first distillery at sea

The gins maiden production will take place in Iona’s custom-made still; innovated by Craft Distilling Business, this is the first still to exist at sea. The unique gin will be distilled, bottled and labelled on board, allowing Iona’s guests to be the first to enjoy our deliciously smooth and one-of-a-kind gin.

A beautifully balanced recipe

Ready your senses for the taste-tingling flavours of a classic yet unrivalled gin and tonic. Or maybe you fancy our gin recipe in a beautifully created cocktail? Bottles of our exclusive gin can even be purchased on Iona—the perfect gift to share (or maybe not share!) back home.

Celebrate your journey with a unique gin

Following the gin’s launch on Iona, Salcombe Gin will distil our recipe in their striking 450 litre copper still ‘Provident’ in Salcombe, ready to share and serve across our ships. This special recipe is made exclusively for P&O Cruises. And we aren’t stopping there. We’re also working with Salcombe Gin to develop limited-edition gins that celebrate the places you experience and connect with on a P&O Cruises holiday. Let the gin-making adventure begin.

Headliners Theatre

Headliners Theatre is perfect for a fun-filled night out on board. Classic yet contemporary, it offers a sleek and sophisticated theatre experience. Plush, comfortable seating and the latest LED technology deliver the ‘wow’ factor, while a two-deck-high auditorium on decks 6 and 7 ensures everyone has the best view in the house.

Ocean Studios

The whole family will love an outing to Ocean Studios. Our four-screen cinema complex offers a warm welcome, comfortable seating and a premium cinema experience. With screenings throughout the day, there’s always an option to see an age-appropriate blockbuster or family classic – complete with popcorn, ice cream and snacks, of course.

A place to immerse yourself in the seductive sounds of an array of musical genres that have inspired musical director Gary Barlow over the years, The 710 Club on Iona is a sophisticated bar crafted to Gary’s creative vision.

Atmospheric and low-lit, The 710 Club will serve up live music from resident band The 710s with an unmistakably vintage vibe, stylish cocktails and the most important ingredient of all; a little escapism, to ensure the good times continue long into the night.

The Limelight Club

Get cosy beneath the intimate low lighting of The Limelight Club and prepare yourself for a show-stopper of an evening at this ticketed event exclusively for adults. Feast your senses on entertainment provided by some of Britain’s best-loved performers and relish in a three-course culinary experience that’ll have your taste-buds tingling.

The Club House

Everyone will love the daytime entertainment on offer at this bright and spacious venue, from guest speakers to live music, family entertainment and game shows. When the lights go down at night, get ready to party with DJ nights, comedians and great music from our resident band Pulse.

Not only home to daytime relaxing by the pool, bespoke and exclusive aerial shows, guest DJ sets and more, SkyDome also hosts IGNITE – our upbeat party-starter with a DJ set produced by Alex James, laser show and live music.

SkyDome offers a relaxed, poolside environment by day, with tantalising dining and drinking options. In the evening, the space seamlessly transitions into a must-visit entertainment venue, showcasing spectacular aerialist displays and hosting live performances and DJ party nights under the stars.

Kick off your holiday with IGNITE! Watch as SkyDome lights up under the night sky with laser shows, a killer DJ set producedby Alex James, and live music for you to dance the night away. This upbeat venue is the perfect place to get into the holiday mood.

Aerial Shows

We’re collaborating with international entertainment company Creativiva – specialists in aerial stunts, acrobatic acts, unique sets, elaborate costumes, avant-garde storytelling and more. We’ll have bespoke live shows in SkyDome and the Grand Atrium.

Eyes will widen. Gasps will sound. Attention will be rapt. This is the power of Creativiva.

Brand new for P&O Cruises, we’re working with international entertainment company, Creativiva to offer something completely different for Iona. We’ve bespoke Creativiva-original shows coming to SkyDome and the Grand Atrium. You’ll find yourself transported to another world; filled with acrobatics, aerial acts, physical theatre, dance, music... not to mention flamboyant costumes, impressive sets and much, much more.

Holiday on Iona and beyond the bands, the theatre shows and the cinema, you’ll find a brand-new immersive experience. Will you wander into the aviary? The Arena of Time? Or perhaps stumble upon two officers lost in a daydream... Lose yourself in a different world; one where acrobats descend from the rooftops, fly through the air, whirl in blurring rings, tie themselves in knots, balance beyond the realms of possibility and leave you spellbound in their midst.

Things to Know Before You Cruise

Iona Vs Britannia: 11 Key Differences For Your Perfect Cruise

As a digital assistant, I may not have the freedom to embark on a cruise adventure, but I know that many of you do. And with so many cruise ships out there, it can be overwhelming to choose the perfect one for your next voyage.

That’s why I have some interesting statistics to share with you about two of P&O Cruises’ newest and most popular ships – Iona and Britannia. Did you know that Iona is the largest ship ever built for the UK market, weighing in at an impressive 185,000 tonnes? And Britannia, while not as large, still boasts 15 passenger decks and can accommodate over 3,600 passengers.

But size isn’t everything when it comes to choosing a cruise ship. That’s why I’m here to highlight 11 key differences between Iona and Britannia, from dining options to pool facilities, to help you make the best choice for your next cruise adventure.

So let’s dive in!

  • Iona can accommodate 43% more passengers than Britannia and is the tenth biggest ship in the world.
  • Iona has more dining venues with a larger selection of dining options, including 14 restaurants and 19 bars and cafes.
  • Iona has four swimming pools, 18 whirlpool spas, and larger sea view cabins than Britannia.
  • Iona offers unique entertainment options like a four-screen cinema complex and 710 Club, which may appeal more to younger cruisers.

Ship Comparison

I can compare the ships Iona and Britannia based on their differences in accommodation, dining options, pools, and entertainment. When it comes to choosing the right ship, it’s important to consider the amenities that are most important to you.

Iona is the larger of the two ships and can accommodate 43% more passengers than Britannia. It’s also more environmentally friendly as one of the world’s first LNG-powered cruise ships. Additionally, Iona is better for cold-weather cruises with its glass-roofed SkyDome, which offers stunning views of the surrounding scenery.

In terms of dining options, Iona offers only Freedom dining, while other ships have Club dining as well. Iona also has more dining venues than Britannia, including The Quays food hall, and a larger selection of dining options, with 14 restaurants and 19 bars and cafes. Some of Iona’s dining options include Hook, Line and Vinegar, The Boardwalk Diner, and Fusion within The Quays food hall. On the other hand, Britannia has set times for Club dining and more formal nights than Iona.

When it comes to pools, Iona has four swimming pools and 18 whirlpool spas, while Britannia has three pools and only two whirlpool spas for public use. Finally, Iona offers unique entertainment options not found on Britannia, such as a four-screen cinema complex and the adults-only 710 Club with live music.

Comparing these amenities can help you choose the right ship for your perfect cruise.

Dining Options

When it comes to dining on PO Cruises, there’s an old saying: variety is the spice of life, and that’s certainly true on both ships.

Iona takes it up a notch with its menu variety, offering 14 restaurants and 19 bars and cafes, including The Quays food hall, Hook, Line and Vinegar, and The Boardwalk Diner. In terms of dining atmosphere, Iona offers only Freedom dining, which means guests can dine whenever they like without having to adhere to set times for Club dining.

Britannia, on the other hand, has both Club and Freedom dining options. Additionally, Iona has fewer formal nights than Britannia, with formal attire only required on some nights.

Overall, both ships offer plenty of dining options to choose from, but Iona’s menu variety and flexibility in dining times may appeal more to those looking for a more relaxed experience.

Pool Differences

Comparing the pool differences between the two PO Cruises ships, it’s important to note that Britannia has three swimming pools while Iona has four. Additionally, Iona has 18 whirlpool spas, while Britannia only has two available for public use. However, it’s important to note that children in swimming nappies are not allowed to use the swimming pools on Iona, while they can on Britannia.

Moreover, Britannia has no sea view cabins, while Iona has larger sea view cabins and conservatory mini suites. The Terrace Pool on Britannia is also shallower than other pools. Both ships have differences in pool depths, and it’s important to note that there are swimming regulations in place for each ship.

Ultimately, the choice between the two ships will depend on individual preferences and needs.

Entertainment Choices

Exploring the entertainment options available on PO Cruises’ newest ships, there are unique features on Iona that may appeal more to younger cruisers in their 20s and 30s.

For instance, the 710 Club on Iona is an adults-only venue that offers live music, making it the perfect spot for those looking for a night out.

Additionally, Iona has a four-screen cinema complex, offering an immersive cinema experience that is not found on Britannia. These entertainment options make Iona an ideal choice for those looking for a fun, lively cruise experience.

Another unique feature on Iona is the variety of entertainment options available, including karaoke at Brodies pub. This is a great way to socialize with fellow guests and have some fun in the evenings.

Additionally, guest speakers are available on both Iona and Britannia, providing an opportunity to learn something new while on board.

Overall, the entertainment options on Iona are more diverse and tailored to younger cruisers, making it a great choice for those looking for a lively, engaging cruise experience.

Individual Circumstances

For me, the best ship choice depends on my individual circumstances and what I’m looking for in a cruise experience.

If I’m looking for a larger ship with more dining options and entertainment choices, then Iona would be the ideal choice. There’s no shortage of food and drink options on board, with 14 restaurants and 19 bars and cafes. The four-screen cinema complex and unique entertainment options like the 710 Club would also be appealing to me, as a younger cruiser.

On the other hand, if I’m looking for a more traditional cruise experience with set dining times and a focus on formal nights, then Britannia would be the better choice. The Club dining option and required formal attire on some nights would suit those looking for a more traditional cruise experience. Additionally, with its shallower Terrace Pool and allowance of swimming nappies for children, Britannia would be the better choice for families with young children.

Ultimately, choosing between Iona and Britannia based on individual circumstances is key to having the perfect cruise experience. The ideal cruise destinations for Iona and Britannia would depend on personal preferences, but both ships offer a range of itineraries to suit different tastes, from Mediterranean sun to Norwegian fjords.

Now that we’ve discussed how choosing the best ship depends on individual circumstances, let’s talk about budget planning and discount offers. As with any vacation, it’s important to set a budget for your cruise and stick to it. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to save money.

Here are some tips to help you get the most bang for your buck:

  • Book early to take advantage of early bird discounts
  • Look for last-minute deals if you’re flexible with your travel dates
  • Consider booking during the off-season for lower prices
  • Take advantage of onboard credit offers or all-inclusive packages
  • Don’t forget to factor in the cost of excursions and other activities when budgeting.

Of course, it’s important to remember that the cheapest option may not always be the best option for you. Be sure to weigh your options carefully and consider what’s most important to you when planning your cruise. With a little bit of research and some careful budget planning, you can enjoy a fantastic cruise without breaking the bank.

Ship Facilities

When considering ship facilities, I always make sure to check out the dining options and pool areas. On the Iona and Britannia ships, there are notable differences in both of these areas.

The Iona stands out with its glass-roofed SkyDome, which is perfect for cold weather cruises. This unique feature allows passengers to enjoy the outdoors while staying warm and comfortable. Additionally, the Iona is more environmentally friendly as it’s one of the world’s first LNG-powered cruise ships. This is a great option for those who are conscious about reducing their carbon footprint.

Moving on to dining options, the Iona offers more variety with 14 restaurants and 19 bars and cafes, including The Quays food hall. One downside is that Iona only offers Freedom dining, while other ships have Club dining as well. However, the flexibility of no set dining times may appeal to some guests.

The dining options on the Iona also include popular choices such as Hook, Line and Vinegar, The Boardwalk Diner, and Fusion within The Quays food hall. Overall, the Iona ship’s facilities offer a unique and varied experience, making it a great option for those looking for something different.

Reader Feedback

Reading through the feedback from other cruisers, it’s clear that the dining options and flexibility of the Iona have been a major highlight for many guests. The freedom dining option has been particularly praised, allowing guests to eat at any time they choose without being tied to set dining times. This has provided a more relaxed and enjoyable experience for guests who want to explore the ship and its many dining options without feeling rushed. However, some guests have also expressed disappointment that the Iona has fewer formal nights than other PO Cruises ships, which may not suit those who enjoy dressing up for dinner.

When it comes to personal preferences, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons of each ship before making a decision. Some guests may prefer the larger selection of dining venues on the Iona, while others may enjoy the more traditional Club dining option on other ships. Similarly, the lack of sea view cabins on the Britannia may be a drawback for some, while others may not mind as much. Ultimately, the choice between the Iona and Britannia will depend on individual preferences and priorities, and it’s worth taking the time to research and compare the facilities and services offered by each ship before booking.

What are the cabin sizes and layouts like on Iona and Britannia?

The cabin sizes and layouts on P&O’s Iona and Britannia vary depending on the cabin type. Both ships offer inside, outside, balcony, and suite options. The cabins feature similar amenities, but Iona’s sea view cabins are larger.

Both Iona and Britannia offer kid-friendly amenities, such as children’s clubs and pools. Entertainment options include movies, live music, and guest speakers. Food and dining choices vary, with Iona offering more options and flexibility in dining times.

What is the overall atmosphere or vibe like on Iona vs Britannia?

P&O Cruises Ships by Size, Age and Class (2022)

P&O Cruises Iona

P&O Cruises has an active fleet of seven ships currently. They plan to launch a further ship in late 2022 ( Arvia ).

The fleet is primarily based in Southampton but during certain periods of the year they homeport in the Caribbean or perform World Cruises.

Introduction to P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises is a British cruise line and part of the biggest cruise company – Carnival Corporation. They are based in Southampton and were originally a subsidiary of the shipping company, P&O.

In 1977 they split from the parent company, along with sister line P&O Cruises Australia to form P&O Cruises.

P&O Cruises is one of the oldest cruise lines in the world, dating back to 1837 – which is even before Cunard Line .

This guide will help you work out which P&O Cruises’ ship is which!

P&O Cruises Frequently Asked Questions

Which p&o ships are adults only.

Both  Arcadia  and  Aurora  are adult-only ships in the P&O Cruises fleet.

Which P&O Ship is the best?

This would depend on the type of cruise you wish to have and the region.  Britannia ,  Azura  and  Ventura  are very popular family ships. Whereas  Iona  caters for families too but specialises in Norwegian / Northern Europe cruises – which are usually for the more mature passenger.

What ships have P&O sold?

P&O Cruises have sold three ships in the last five years.  Adonia  was sold in 2018,  Oriana  was sold in 2019 and  Oceana  was sold in 2020.

Which is the biggest P&O Ship?

The biggest P&O Cruise ship to date is  Iona , she can carry over 5,200 passengers and is also the longest ship in the fleet at 344 metres.

Which is the smallest P&O Ship?

Currently,   Aurora  is the smallest ship in the P&O Cruises fleet at 270 metres long and carrying 1,950 passengers.

Are P&O Ferries the same as P&O Cruises?

No! They are totally different companies (only sharing the same name!) Back in 1977 P&O Cruises separated from its parent company P&O Shipping.

They are now two totally different entities, with Carnival Corporation owning P&O Cruises.

P&O Cruises Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

P&O Cruises Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Are all p&o cruises ships new builds.

Yes, although almost all P&O Cruises’ ships are sister ships ‘in class’ with other ships from other Carnival brands.

Examples of this are:

  • Britannia (Royal-class – like Royal Princess )
  • Ventura/Azura (Grand-class – like Diamond Princess )
  • Arcadia (Vista-class – like Queen Victoria )

P&O Cruises Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)

Final thoughts.

When it comes to picking one of the P&O Cruises’ fleet to cruise on – you have a wealth of choices between adult-only and family-friendly ships with some in-between too!

New to the fleet flagship, Iona has proved very popular with UK cruisers and when her sister, Arvia sets sail in late 2022 cruisers will have even more choice of cruises from Southampton on P&O Cruises .

The top 10 biggest cruise ships in the world

M odern cruise ships continue to grow in size, with the biggest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas , launching at the start of this year, and her sister ship the Star of the Seas expected to surpass her in size.

Both of these ships are operated by Royal Caribbean International, which operates five of the ten largest cruise ships in the world. Carnival Corporation, arguably the biggest cruise company in the world, features three times on the list through its subsidiaries P&O Cruises and Costa Cruises.

All of the heaviest cruise ships in the world were built within the last 20 years, although the majority – six of the ten – were built within the last five years.

So, here are the top ten biggest cruise ships in the world, by gross tonnage.

10. P&O Cruises MS Arvia : 185,581 gross tonnes

The MS Arvia is P&O Cruises’ fourth ship to be built by German shipyard Meyer Werft. Weighing in at 185,581 gross tonnes, the 345m (1,130-foot) Arvia is slightly larger than her sister ship, the MS Iona . The 20-deck ship is the largest ship commissioned for the British cruise market and has a maximum passenger capacity of 6,264 passengers, with 1,800 crew onboard.

The ship is the second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered Excellence-class vessel for P&O, following the Iona . Arvia is powered by a 61,760kW LNG drive system, with a propulsion power of 37 megawatts. The LNG-powered propulsion system allows the vessel to sail at a maximum speed of 21.5 knots.

After being floated out in August 2022, the Arvia mainly operates itineraries around the Caribbean or the Mediterranean.

9. Costa Cruises – Costa Smeralda : 185,010 gross tonnes

The Costa Smeralda is the first LNG-powered vessel in the Costa Cruises fleet. With a gross tonnage of 185,010gt, the 20-deck Excellence-class ship measures 337m (1,106 feet) in length. The second LNG-powered cruise ship to enter operation in the world, she has a maximum capacity of 6,554 passengers with 1,646 crew and a service speed of 21.5 knots.

Construction of the Costa Smeralda began at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, in September 2017. Meyer Turku collaborated with the Meyer Werft Papenburg shipyard to develop and integrate the LNG propulsion plant for the ship. She is fitted with four 16-cylinder, Caterpillar MaK 16VM46DF engines, with 15.4 megawatts (20,710 horsepower) output per engine, resulting in a maximum power of  37 megawatts (50,000 horsepower).

The ship, which was named after the Emerald Coast of Sardinia, entered service in December 2019 , departing Savona on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean, where it has sailed since.

8. Costa Cruises – Costa Toscana : 186,364 gross tonnes

The Costa Toscana is the sister ship of the Costa Smeralda and is also powered by LNG . measuring 337m (1,106 feet) long and weighing in at 186,364 gross tonnes, the Toscana has a maximum capacity of 6,338 passengers and 1,678 staff across her 20 decks.

Like her sister ship, the Toscana was also built at the Meyer shipyard in Finland, with construction completed in 2021.
