Jewel in Concert

Jewel is the rare artist who can mesmerize audiences with just an acoustic guitar and her voice. Not only is the Grammy-nominated songwriter a masterful storyteller, but she's also an expressive singer who takes a variety of approaches — raspy whispers, a powerful warble, and even a signature, awe-inspiring yodel — to convey the emotion within her folk, pop, and country tunes. Still, Jewel's 2018 Handmade Holiday Tour, a seasonal song-filled show with a pre-concert chance to make gifts, is a veritable family affair. As with the 2017 iteration of the festive jaunt, special guests include her dad, Atz (who also stars on the reality show ‘Alaska: The Last Frontier') and brothers Atz Lee and Nikos Kilcher.

About Jewel

Jewel Kilcher was brought up on a farm in rural Alaska, but started playing music from a very young age. As a child, she performed with her father, touring a circuit of hotels and bars; later, as a teenager, she studied operatic voice at Michigan's Interlochen Arts Academy. However, Jewel's career breakthrough came in early 1990s San Diego: Discovered while living in her van and playing coffeehouses, she landed a major-label record deal and released 1995's multi-platinum ‘Pieces of You,' an insightful folk-pop collection that spawned two Billboard Hot 100 No. 2 hits, "You Were Meant for Me" and "Foolish Games," and the haunting meditation "Who Will Save Your Soul." In subsequent years, Jewel expanded her fanbase by dabbling in both mainstream pop (the slinky single "Intuition" peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100) and country. But in a testament to her formidable talents, she also became a successful author — her 1999 poetry collection ‘A Night Without Armor' landed on the New York Times' best-seller list — and launched an acting career. Most notably, she portrayed June Carter Cash in the 2013 TV movie ‘Ring of Fire.'

Outstanding.

This stop in Lincoln; California was part of my 2023 tour by car of some of the western states. I stopped at Jewels concerts in Santa Cruz, California and Lincoln, California. I love the way she is so real in her concerts. I gave it a five out of five. I love the way she mixes her stories with what is going on in the world today and a little of her life and what she is doing. I actually love her when she is just doing the guitar by herself. I ended up in Telluride, Colorado for 32 days and also visited nephews of my sister in Southern California and in Arizona. Jewel is always a highlight of concerts. I highly recommend you listen to her audible books which she narrates. Chasing Down the Wind and Never Broken. Wonderful to listen to as her speaking voice is also very calming.

After years of being a fan and having a 90's crush - finally able to see a live performance of that amazing talent. Hope to see another performance in the coming years. Thank you Jewel - please do a meet and greet!

Not want I expected

I’ve see Jewel before and was not expecting an acoustic show. I wish it was billed as one. I wouldn’t have gone, left early like a lot o other people. Jewel is a great singer and songwriter and love her stories, but this show was not want I expected

Angel among us

This intimate concert was really focused on storytelling, vocals & connecting with the audience. Edwin Mccain opened and it was him, his beautiful voice & a man on a saxophone. Incredible! It paved the way for her show: just Jewel & 2 guitars. At first I thought her stories were ones that she’s retold but then it felt like she was absolutely authentic. She let the audience call out songs they wanted & she’d play them if she could recall the strings or words. It was vulnerable & regal. My friend & I both cried at how loving her words & angelic operatic voice were. The themes of her messages were kindness above all, hating hate & not each other, take care of your health and mental over all & just do good. Makes me want to see her next time she’s around as well!

DEPRESSING!!

NOT AT CONCERT TO BE PREACHED ABOUT DRINKING AND MENTAL ILNESS!!

Seeing Jewel for the 1st time exceeded my expectations. She was even better than I could imagine - beautiful voice and so personable. I will see her every chance I get when she is in my area.

The 3 performers were all awesome!

Jewell has a voice that is other worldly. Her control and range is frankly 1 in a billion. I have been a fan her entire career but only saw her live once before. In this venue and with just a guitar I could not have been more in awe of her vocal instrument. Her songwriting is of course excellent and heartfelt and the messages of her songs are clear and very accurate. Love her. Edwin McCain was terrific and his audience patter hilarious. Want to have a beer with that guy. Gina Miles is going to be a big star and it will be well deserved. What a talent! Just the greatest show and the Venue is awesome.

Such a good show, beautiful music and she is the real deal. Love her honesty.

In the presence of excellance...

Jewel is an artist at the very top of her game... She's in the Pantheon of the greatest female singer-songwriters ever... Probably the best performance/experience I've have at a concert since pre-covid... Would see her again in a heartbeat...

Probably one of the best concerts I’ve been too

Such an intimate concert without the big bands behind the performers. Artists who didn’t need the bands and all the instruments, only their voices.

Jewel (born May 23, 1974) is the stage and recording name of Jewel Kilcher, a Grammy-nominated American folk-pop singer-songwriter and guitarist hailing from Payson, Utah, U.S.

Kilcher was rasied in Homer, Alaska, U.S. and got her first taste of performing music, singing in bars alongside her father to earn money. At age 16 Kilcher began studying at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlohen, Michigan, U.S., and learned to play the guitar and compose her own songs. After moving to San Diego, California to be with her mother, an A&R representative heard the singer play at the coffee shop where Kilcher was a Barista, which subsequently led to Atlantic Records signing Jewel.

“Pieces of You”, Jewel’s debut album was released in 1995 and was an immediate hit. Aided by the gentle hit singles “Who Will Save Your Soul”, “You Were Meant for Me”, and “Foolish Games”, and an extensivee touring schedule, the album was later certified as a 12-times multi-platinum album. This success afforded Jewel the creative freedom rarely seen with 22 year old, and the singer turned her focus towards poetry and released the collection of poems “Night Without Armor”. After performing the national anthem at the 1998 Super Bowl XXXII, Jewel released her sophomore album “Spirit” towards the tail-end of 1998. With a more pop-orientation, “Spirit” may have deterred a number of the signer’s original fans however still peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, largely aided by the single “Hands”.

A year later Jewels released the Christmas-themed album “Joy: A Holiday Collection”, with the song “Joy to the World” released as a single. Once again breaking the Billboard 200 Top 10, Jewel’s third album ”This Way” was issued in November 2001. The album spawned the singles “Standing Still”, “Break Me”, “This Way”, and the club hit “Serve the Ego”. With even greater pop sensibilities the album “0304” was released in 2003 led by the single “Intuition”.

Noticing her declining appeal, Jewel’s sixth studio album “Goodbye Alice in Wonderland” returned the singer to her earlier warm and sweet-sounding approach, however marked the end of Jewel’s tenure with Atlantic Records. After recording a duet with country music star Jason Michael Carrol entitled “No Good in Goodbye”, Jewel expressed an interest in pursuing a country-music career and later signed with the independent Valory Records in 2007. Utilising the singer’s tumultuous childhood, Jewel’s debut country album “Perfectly Clear” was released in January 2008. The record topped the Billboard Country Album chart aided by the singles “Stronger Woman”, “I Do”, and “Till It Feels Like Cheating”.

In 2009 an album of lullabies arrives entitled “Lullaby” featuring a cover of the popular song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. Jewel’s ninth studio album “Sweet and Wild” was issued in June 2010 led by the single “Satisfied”. The follow-up to “Lullaby”, “The Merry Goes ‘Round” was released in 2011, followed by a best-of compilation “Greatest Hits” in 2013, and her second Christmas album “Let It Snow: A Holiday Collection” also in 2013.

Live reviews

Remember the first time you saw Jewel dressed in jeans and a white tank playing her guitar on the floor in the ‘You Were Meant For Me’ video or the time she was just singing inside a public bathroom in the visual for ‘Who Will Save Your Soul’?

Since the early 1990s, Jewel has been giving us melodic songs with thought-out lyrics and her signature yodeling vocals. From the time she was still writing the folk pop songs in the back of her car to the country tinged tracks she’s rolling out now, this singer, songwriter, poet and actress has proved that it doesn’t matter what kind of music you play. If it’s good, people will listen. Not only has she released eight full-length albums and released 28 singles, Jewel has also contributed to seven soundtracks and acted in four films that included playing June Carter in the 2012 made-for-tv movie ‘Ring of Fire.’

But she isn’t only strong in front of the camera, she can also put on a show onstage. Her vocal range is on point and proves she can sing anything. And the moment she decided to switch into country, her pop and folk experience helped her produce music that could reach a wider audience. From the melodies to the lyrics, Jewel has proven that she can reach the masses and connect with those listening to her.

Everything about this concert was ideal from the cozy, intimate venue to artist's performance. The wait staff showed the perfect amount of attention: not too much where they were annoying and not too little where it appeared they didn't care.

Chance McCoy was a phenomenal opening act, especially given that he had never played with the band professionally prior. And Jewel, well, she was Jewel. You expect a fantastic show and she delivered!

My wife has been a Jewel admirer for many years, I took her to the concert as a birthday present, she loved it and so did I, to be honest this was my very first concert ever. I have listened to Jewel before on cds but been there and actually listen to her live was an experience that surpassed all my expectations, I was touched by her story and by her having her father and brothers sharing the stage, she is absolutely stunning!

I really enjoyed myself at the show. I love Jewel's angelic voice and she's definitely an inspiration. the show experience felt like I was at a private listening session. I'll definitely be attending more of her concerts. Jewel's presence on stage is amazing and she gives fans a piece of her soul every time she sings one of her songs.

First and only concert I’ve gone to. My sister won tickets two through radio station in NC. She knew I loved her music!!! So me and a co worker went. Lawn seats! Loved it!!! She’s original, it was relaxed, not crowded stressful. I don’t care for large groups. But! Made sure left earlier to beat non drivers out of raleigh lol!

Her Christmas special tour was awesome. her family is very talented. Dad and brothers did an awesome warm up. it was great hearing Jewel talk about her childhood and growing up, and her struggles on leaving home at such a young age and keeping her dream going and forgiving her Dad and having a good relationship with her Dad now.

Jewel is AMAZING live. Not only is she an amazing singer, but she explains the songs she sings and keeps the audience captivated the entire show. I'm so happy to have finally seen my favorite musical artist; I'd only been waiting since 95 (when I was 5). Do not miss an opportunity to see/hear her live! <3.

Amazing, spectacular, fantastic, inspiring, incredible, honest, beautiful, stunning, funny, genuine, entertaining... I could go on and on. If you are thinking about going to see Jewel live, don't ponder it any further. Go!!!

Jewell has an amazing voice. The show was over two hours and she sang a wide range of songs from Christmas to hers to having her family sing. I did not realize she could carry a tune like she did and sing with such grace.

Jewel Celebrates Family And More With Handmade Holiday Tour

jewel christmas tour

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jewel brings her Handmade Holiday Tour to Wichita's Orpheum Theatre on Monday, Nov. 26.

The performance will spotlight her take on holiday classics and reveal a different side of her vocal range. Joining Jewel will be her father, Atz Kilcher, and her brothers, Atz Lee and Nikos Kilcher, all three of whom are featured on the hit Discovery Channel series Alaska: The Final Frontier . The series focuses on how the family — living outside Homer, AK — exists without modern heating or indoor plumbing while subsisting on food gathered from hunting and farming.

Jewel has sold more 30 million albums worldwide and has authored three books, including Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half The Story (2015) and the poetry collection, A Night Without Armor . Her two holiday albums to date are Joy: A Holiday Collection (1999) and Let It Snow: A Holiday Collection (2013). She has also appeared in a range of film and television shows, including Alaska: The Final Frontier. She recently spoke with KMUW about her decision to take to the road with her family.

Interview Highlights

Tell me about the origins of the Handmade Holiday Tour.

Last year was my first one. I think my Christmas record was one of my better selling records but I never did a tour with it. This show lets me sing in a way nobody knows I can sing. It's a very range-y show and very difficult vocally. I'll sing like Aretha Franklin and really be belting. I'll do a vibrato-less, perfect, pristine aria like "Ave Maria." It really lets me push myself as a vocalist. But I don't write that way for some reason. I don't really write for my vocal capabilities. But the main reason I did it was to figure out how to get my family together for the holidays without me going to Alaska.

My whole family comes down: my dad and my brothers and my son. We all get to live on a bus together and do what we grew up doing, which is handmaking gifts for one another and singing. My son gets to see that tradition in our lives. I think, around the holidays, it's really important to create a connection. For me, that handmade aspect is really important. My dad's making gifts out of roots and trees. He makes jewelry and baskets and things; he'll be selling them in the lobby. My son is busy making bath bombs every day. It's so cute here at the house. My friend and I made jewelry. The holiday can be simple. It's an offering from the heart. That's what this entire show is.

I would imagine that at points in your career you did have times when you had to be away from your family at the holidays. I think that's a very common thing among many musicians. Did you have times like that, and how did you get through them?

My entire career, I don't think I've ever spent a Thanksgiving at home; I don't think I've ever spent a New Year's at home. Very, very rare. And I'm far from home. Alaska isn't exactly like you pop home for two days. It was hard. I got homesick a lot. Especially for the land itself. I don't know why it took me this long, call me a slow learner, but I finally said, "Oh! I could bring my family here and we could all sing together!" [Laughs.]

I really wanted my son to be around my family and see that singing wasn't just mom's thing. My brothers both write, my dad writes. They actually do a writers in the round at the beginning of the show. They all sit around on stage together and tell stories and talk. They're all really funny and entertaining. They have different writing styles. My son gets to see that writing is not just my thing. He can have his own voice and a very different voice because none of my family members write nothing like the other.

The handmade element of this is really fascinating. I think about times in my own family when maybe money was a little bit short at the holidays. The gifts were quirky, but they were more special as the result of that.

We didn't have money to buy gifts, but we made gifts. There's a show about my family called Alaska: The Last Frontier . My family has a hit TV show. The producers didn't know it was my family. They're homesteaders. They live off the land. You can really see how I was raised. It's beautiful. It's hard work; it's all done by hand. I loved never getting store-bought gifts. I think, as a kid, I kind of wished I got a Walkman like the other kids, but I have baskets my dad wove me out of the roots on the beaches that we grew up riding horses on. It's priceless. That's the way he was raised: All of his eight siblings, they all made each other gifts. Sneaking away to hide your gifts that your building for your siblings, it's very sweet. I wanted that to be a big part of this show.

What's that been like, having your family at the center of a television show?

I had the hardest time explaining how I was raised to the press. I had to quit talking about it. Nobody could understand. "Was it a hippie commune? Was it a ranch? Why did you have an outhouse? What?" The TV shows illustrates a really noble way of life. I think people have to remember where their food comes from, we have to remember where our water comes from. You can't value what you don't have a relationship with. People don't have a relationship with the earth. It's sad.

I think this show has a ton of value. I'm super proud. I landed somewhere, I flew in private somewhere for a gig, and the rancher/operator there said, "Are you Atz Kilcher's daughter?" I said, "I am!" I love it. I think it's great.

Jewel Releases New Album ‘Freewheelin’ Woman’ Announces Tour with Train + Blues Traveler

by Sam Long April 15, 2022, 11:43 am

Four-time Grammy-winning singer/songwriter and “American Song Contest” competitor Jewel has released her 13th album  Freewheelin’ Woman. The album marks a stark transition in the singer-songwriter’s devotion to her career and the direction she wishes it to go.

Videos by American Songwriter

Growing up on singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and eventually getting into some Muscle Shoals records, Jewel says that’s where she wanted her voice and writing to turn to on the album. When the Alaska native started her career, she was homeless and trying to desperately figure out what was going to work. Much like the Shoals records, she wants to return to music on her own terms and to cut her teeth on something with more grit and more bite.

jewel christmas tour

“When I first got signed, I was homeless and trying to figure out whether this was a career that could actually work for me,” Jewel says. “I knew that I wanted to be an artist, and that meant I had to be willing to grow, adapt, change, and go wherever I felt my heart needed to go—which often isn’t where managers or labels or even fans might say you should go. And I’m proud that now, at 47, I can look back and know that I’ve never done anything contrived for the sake of trying to be successful. Everything I’ve done, I did it because it was fun for me—and this record was  really  fun.”

The new album is a celebration of the path Jewel has made for herself in recent years and a reminder that “taking the long way” to feel truly aligned with what you’re meant to do is a wonderful thing.

“A lot of these songs have to do with overcoming something difficult and then celebrating that, or taking the long way around to get to the place that feels right to you,” she said.

Jewel and her band will be touring with Train (featured on her recent single “Dancing Slow” ) and Blues Traveler this summer. The tour kicks off on June 8 in Mansfield, Massachusetts, with 35+ shows including New York, Nashville, Dallas, San Diego, and more before concluding on August 6 at the legendary Red Rocks venue in Colorado, Jewel’s home state.

The ‘90s icons will embark on two legs of their joint tour, with the first stint of live dates kicking off on July 11 in Bonner, Montana. The “You Were Meant for Me” singer, 49, and the “Come to My Window” musician, 62, will play along the West Coast, with stops in major cities like San Diego, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and others, before performing a few shows in the Midwest and wrapping up the initial leg on Aug. 7.

According to a press release, fans can expect Jewel to play a setlist featuring songs from her recent 2022 album Freewheelin' Woman and hits from throughout her discography, like off her breakout, debut album Pieces of You .

Etheridge will set out on the joint tour following her own headlining dates on the I’m Not Broken Tour. The Grammy winner’s solo tour will run throughout North America in the spring from March until late April, and then she’ll play a handful of shows in Australia in May, as well as a special performance with The Avett Brothers at Denver's Red Rocks Amphitheater in early July.

About Melissa Etheridge

Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to an appearance on the 1989 Grammy Awards show. For several years, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as "Bring Me Some Water," "No Souvenirs" and "Ain't It Heavy," for which she won a Grammy® in 1992. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album,  Yes I Am  (1993). The collection featured the massive hits, "I'm the Only One" and "Come to My Window," a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy® Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album,   Your Little Secret , which was distinguished by the hit single, "I Want to Come Over." Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996. Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades. Since her notable rise to fame, Melissa has continued to release several critically acclaimed recordings including,  This Is M.E., Memphis Rock & Soul , and  The Medicine Show . The critically acclaimed, sold-out run premiered at New World Stages on October 13, 2022. Jewel Is a Work of Art Herself at Her Exhibit Preview

The singer wore the Iris van Herpen Ananda-kosha gown to the preview of her 'The Portal: An Art Experience by Jewel' exhibit

Wesley Hitt/Getty

On May 3, Jewel (born Jewel Kilcher) stepped out at her new exhibit, The Portal: An Art Experience by Jewel , at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Ark.

The Grammy-nominated artist, 49, was a piece of artwork in a sculptured silver Iris van Herpen gown.

The Ananda-kosha gown included intricate detailing that was in a sculpted fashion, the silver overlay sat atop a nude slip, directing all eyes to the beautiful metallic details.

She kept the accessories simple, drawing attention to the showstopping dress, and wore a pair of silver open-toed platform heels. She arrived with no jewelry and kept her makeup minimal with a subtle metallic eyeshadow look that enhanced her dress.

As for her hair, she kept it simple as well, with a low bun and wavy pieces that mimicked the shapes of her dress.

“I am a fan of this artists work — both wearable work and not wearable — because of my use of traditional mediums as well as new tech," says Jewel exclusively to PEOPLE of the outfits she wore at the event, the second of which was designed by Casey Curran . "I wanted both outfits to evoke the intersection of technology and art and designers Iris van Herpen and Casey both represent this. I reached out to Casey on IG and he was kind enough to make this piece for me."

The singer shared her look to her Instagram Stories, posing outside of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and simply tagged the museum’s account and Iris van Herpen’s Instagram account.

Jewel/Instagram

Along with sharing her own Stories, she also reshared a PEOPLE Instagram Post to her Stories. In the video, she exclusively tells PEOPLE that she asked party attendees to dress to a theme of “the unseen realm” and dress “ethereally and otherworldly.”

She also tells viewers that the May 3 event is the preview of her three-month installation.

“It revolves around an idea that we all traveled through three realms of reality every day, often without realizing it,” explains Jewel. “Our inner realm which is thoughts and feelings, the physical world and then the unseen, whatever that means to you."

She previously told PEOPLE that “mental health and emotional well-being is a side effect of our three spheres working in harmony. And suffering is a side effect if they aren't."

Jewel hopes fans visiting the exhibit this summer will take the time to learn about "what's working and what isn't" in their lives.

"It's about being curious about ourselves and discovery," she explained. "It's about being aware of our three realms and being committed that we can change it and have input in it."

Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

jewel christmas tour

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.
