‘Yes, I Can Say That!’ Review: The Freedom to Offend
The comedian Judy Gold’s new solo show at 59E59 Theaters is deliberately uncomfortable — and packed with laughs.
- Share full article
By Laura Collins-Hughes
The knuckle-dragging notion that women aren’t funny makes only a cameo in the comedian Judy Gold’s new solo show, “ Yes, I Can Say That! ” It’s tucked amid her homage to pioneering forebears like Totie Fields and Joan Rivers, who, Gold tells the audience, “said out loud what women whispered about when their husbands weren’t around.”
The slur about unfunniness, she says, was handed down through generations of men “who did not want to see some brassy broad onstage making jokes about them and the part they played in their wives’ unhappiness.”
Directed by BD Wong for Primary Stages , “Yes, I Can Say That!” is a deliberately uncomfortable, laugh-packed show seeded with stealth missiles like that one. Though Gold insists at the outset that a comedian’s only goal is to land the joke, this is not entirely true. As in her smart and impassioned book “Yes, I Can Say That: When They Come for the Comedians, We Are All in Trouble,” released in 2020, she wants at least as much to make us think.
Onstage at 59E59 Theaters , Gold builds a vehement case for the vital importance of the freedom to offend in a healthy democratic society. For starters, she would like us to get over the kind of hair-trigger touchiness about language that leads to social media pile-ons, and focus on genuine threats.
“They are taking away women’s rights, they are banning books, we have mass shootings, and people are furious if you mistakenly use the wrong pronoun,” she says. Then, urgently: “We had an insurrection, people!”
As much as Gold is in favor of some general toughening up across the political spectrum, she’s not anti-sensitivity — “I [expletive] hate bullies,” she says — just anti-preciousness and anti-absurdity. What worries her is the freedom of expression that gets taken away when the freedom to outrage is banished.
Written by Gold and Eddie Sarfaty, “Yes, I Can Say That!” interweaves a brief history of American comedy (Lenny Bruce is of course invoked) with Gold’s personal history, including comedy-club flashbacks, like the time she took rapid revenge on an M.C. who was witless enough to insult her just before she took the mic. She does some terrific impressions, including an uncanny Rudy Giuliani.
What she doesn’t quite do is make palpable any current threat to comedians’ speech, so a moment when she explicitly frets about that — in the context of speaking truth to the president at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner — feels like a relic of the previous presidency, when Gold wrote her book. The show’s argument could gain strength by paying just a little more attention to some of the other First Amendment issues currently in the headlines.
Gold’s larger point is that the ugliness of the past isn’t as long ago as we like to think. She notes, unnervingly, that her birth in 1962 was just 17 years after the death camp at Auschwitz was liberated.
“Hashtag ObjectsInMirrorAreCloserThanTheyAppear,” she says, almost as if it’s a throwaway line.
She gets a laugh, but the joke is a warning.
Yes, I Can Say That! Through April 16 at 59E59 Theaters, Manhattan; 59e59.org . Running time: 1 hour 20 minutes.

Reviews from Broadway and Beyond
Yes, I Can Say That!: Judy Gold Hilariously Makes Her Voice Heard
By Frank Scheck
★★★★☆ The comedian talks about her influences and the corrosive effects of censorship on comedy in her one-person show.
In her new one-person show, comedian Judy Gold ambitiously attempts to blend traditional stand-up, autobiographical material, a tribute to the great female comedians of the past who’ve influenced her, and social commentary about the growing danger of social, political and even physical attacks on comedians around the world. It’s a tricky balance, but the talented and engaging performer manages to pull it off. Yes, I Can Say That! , co-written by fellow comedian Eddie Sarfaty and based on Gold’s 2020 book of the same name, has its rough spots. But overall, it proves enlightening, informative and, most important of all, funny.
Aided by sound effects and projections of images ranging from female comedians she’s admired to such subject headings as “Vaginas in Comedy,” Gold freely alternates between stand-up comedy, signaled by her use of a handheld microphone and a tendency to shout her lines, and more serious commentary, albeit still packed with one-liners, delivered in more sober tones. She pays lavish tribute, complete with imitations, to such inspirations as Phyllis Diller, Totie Fields, Joan Rivers, Moms Mabley and other women who entered the field at a time when it was largely dominated by males. And speaking of males, she has harsh words for Jerry Lewis, who once said about female comics, “A woman doing comedy doesn’t offend me, but sets me back a bit. I think of her as a producing machine that brings babies in the world.”
Ouch. It’s no wonder Gold refers to him as a “misogynist pig.”
Gold proves herself adept at analyzing the art form to which she’s devoted her life, demonstrated by her comments in the section about “crossing the line.” As an example, she delivers a joke using the Holocaust as a punch line. It’s very funny, but, as she points out, she has to be careful about when and where she uses it. On the other hand, she exults that if the audience laughs, and for the right reasons, it’s akin to winning the lottery. She cites several recent examples of comedians who don’t stay within politically correct territory and suffered career problems as a result.
One of those was Gold, who once made jokes about a Hasidic woman in Brooklyn who had her wig torn off while she was walking on the street with her children. Someone posted some of the jokes online, resulting in Gold getting vociferously attacked (we see a sample of the nasty emails) and receiving negative press publicity. But she’s clearly unbowed, not only repeating the jokes here but also expanding them. And they’re indeed hilarious, as is her imitation of Senator Chuck Schumer, whose speechifying style she compares to “reciting the Mourner’s Kaddish.”
Needless to say, Gold has little use for comedians kowtowing to people’s sensitivities, as exemplified by the trend of providing “safe spaces” that even some comedy clubs have come to embrace. She quotes her collaborator Sarfaty, who says, “Going to a comedy club and expecting not to get offended is like going on a rollercoaster and expecting not to get scared.”
She cites cases of comedians around the world who have been imprisoned by their governments and even killed, including her hero, Afghan comedian Khasha Zwan, who was murdered by the Taliban. In the execution video posted online, he’s seen making jokes and mocking his killers until the very end.
A particularly moving segment involves her tribute to such fellow comedians as Bob Smith, a close friend who continued performing after being diagnosed with ALS until audiences could no longer understand his slurred speech. And who continued to write jokes until his death with the aid of an iPad on which he typed them out with one finger.
If all this makes the show sound like a TED talk, it couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, the evening occasionally slips toward didacticism. And the staging by BD Wong can feel too cutesy at times with its visual and sound effects serving as theatrical rim shots. But Gold is so naturally funny, her delivery and comic timing so impeccable, that belly laughs are to be had in abundance. And while it may be true that Yes, I Can Say That! is preaching to the choir, that doesn’t make its sermon any less important or its preacher any less uproarious.
Yes, I Can Say That! opened March 21, 2023, at 59E59 and runs through April 16. Tickets and information: 59e59.org

Judy Gold knows the value of a good joke – and the steep price of silencing comedians. Unnerved and infuriated, Judy shares her reverence for the intimacy of collective laughter and her passion for the vital work comedians do to bring us together, make us think, and speak truth to power. Based on her book “Yes, I Can Say That: When They Come for the Comedians, We Are All in Trouble,” the comedy veteran is taking the stage to tell the fascists and crybabies to shove their hate and political correctness up their respective asses. This wickedly funny new one-woman show is a big-mouthed and big-hearted call for truth, kindness, common sense, and most of all, laughter.

Anthony Rapp, Judy Gold, and 10 more upcoming shows that prove theater is queerer than ever
The curtain rises on a new year, and the bright lights of the stage are spotlighting plenty of queer theater-makers. Solo shows are all the rage, including performances by Anthony Rapp, Judy Gold, and Ryan J. Haddad. Shakespeare catapults to the 21st century with the Broadway transfer of Fat Ham and About Face Theatre’s Gender Play, or What You Will . Los Angeles continues to prove its prowess with a world premiere musical, and San Francisco welcomes the return of the most iconic queer story of them all — The Wizard of Oz .

Sugar Daddy
“Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion,” says Trudy in Steel Magnolias . The same can be said for comedian and solo artist Sam Morrison of his one-person show, which premiered last year at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Morrison met his partner at Provincetown ‘s famous Bear Week. The two quarantined together at his grandmother’s house during the height of the pandemic. Despite their efforts, his partner contracted and died from the virus. Morrison can usually be found performing stand-up throughout Brooklyn’s comedy scene, but Sugar Daddy promises a complex look at the heartache beyond the humor.
January 11 – February 23, 2023 at SoHo Playhouse, New York City.
Your Sexts are Sh*t: Older Better Letters
British theatermaker Rachel Mars heads to New York City to dismantle centuries of queer culture with a “gloriously rude new show” that makes sexting look like a trip to the candy store. Before digital technology, there were hand-written letters — many of which were considered scandalous with a capital “S.” Mars explores the words of James Joyce, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, and others while also considering queer sentiments of the modern era.
January 11, 13-15 at The Public Theater, New York City.
Anthony Rapp’s Without You
The show reimagined what musical theater could be in the 20th century. And for those cast in the original production of Rent , Jonathan Larson’s ode to New York City’s East Village would be a career game-changer. Anthony Rapp went from working at Starbucks to performing eight times a week on Broadway with, among others, Idina Menzel , Taye Diggs, and Jesse L. Martin. Now a new daddy, Rapp has some distance from the Tony-winning musical and has adapted his best-selling memoir Without You about his experience into a stage show backed by a five-piece rock band. January 14 – April 30 at New World Stages, New York City.
Fellow Travelers
Based on Thomas Mallon’s 2008 novel of the same name, Fellow Travelers dives into the double lives of queer men amid Joe McCarthy’s lavender scare, which aimed to eradicate “sexual subversives” from government employment. The opera , composed by Virginia native Gregory Spears, premiered in June 2016. This is the first time the piece will be performed throughout the Commonwealth.
Norfolk, Virginia – January 27-29 Fairfax, Virginia – February 4-5 Richmond, Virginia – February 10, 12
The First Deep Breath
A former correctional officer and MMA fighter, Lee Edward Colston II has channeled his strength and creativity into playwriting more recently. The First Deep Breath follows the aftermath of a Baptist pastor and his family after the death of his daughter. When the eldest son returns from prison, family secrets are finally revealed. When it originally opened in 2019, the Black queer playwright’s work was named “one of the best Chicago plays of the decade.” This production marks its West Coast premiere.
February 1 – March 5 at Geffen Playhouse, Los Angeles.
Playwright Donja R. Love’s play One in Two draws its name from the CDC statistic that half of Black men in the U.S. who have sex with men will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetime. Love wrote the piece a decade after his own diagnosis, stating in the play’s forward, “There is still trauma that’s hard to write; there are still remnants of fear that tremble the voice found in my writing. I’ve gotten to a point where there are no words, characters, dialogue, or subtext to hide behind anymore. Fear can no longer overshadow the truth.”
February 16 – March 19 at PrideArts, Chicago.
The Lonely Few
Tony winner Lauren Patten ( Jagged Little Pill ) stars in the world premiere musical about an aspiring musician in a small Kentucky town who crosses paths with an established musician who may be the ticket to success. Sparks fly onstage and off as the pair discovers their passion for songwriting and each other. Co-directed by Trip Cullman and Ellenore Scott, the musical features music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson Award winner Zoe Sarnak and a book by Rachel Bonds.
February 28 – April 9 at Geffen Playhouse, Los Angeles.
Dark Disabled Stories
Actor and playwright Ryan J. Haddad returns to New York City’s Public Theater with his latest autobiographical one-person show — a series of vignettes about strangers he encounters while navigating a world not built for his walker and cerebral palsy. “My upbringing gave me ambition, drive, work ethics, knowing how fabulous I was, feeling unconditional love from an extended family that is not even countable,” Haddad told Metro Weekly . “Moving away, I realized the way that I was taught to see myself is not the way that strangers see me.” Haddad’s previous show, Hi, Are You Single? , ran last spring at Washington D.C .’s Woolly Mammoth Theater, and he also appeared Off-Broadway in american (tele)visions at New York Theatre Workshop.
February 28 – March 26 at The Public Theater, New York City.
Yes, I Can Say That!
Comedian, actor, and writer Judy Gold had plenty to say, and she’s not shy about it. Based on her book, Yes, I Can Say That: When They Come for the Comedians, We Are All in Trouble , Gold takes to the stage “to tell the fascists and crybabies to shove their hate and political correctness up their respective *sses.” Co-written with Eddie Sarfaty, directed by BD Wong , and presented by Primary Stages, the evening promises to be full of laughs and a tribute to free speech.
March 4 – April 16 at 59E59 Theaters, New York City.
Shakespeare’s Hamlet gets a makeover thanks to playwright James Ijames, whose backyard barbecue version, Fat Ham , won 2022’s Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Here, the prince of Denmark — reimagined as big, Black, and queer — is called upon by his father’s ghost to avenge his death. The play had successful runs at Philadelphia’s Wilma Theater and the Public Theater in New York City and now heads to Broadway. “I think I’m trying to be a good steward of Black culture,” Ijames told TDF Stages . “I am very invested in the historical depictions and shape of Blackness as well as the contemporary understanding of Blackness and how they meet … I’m really preoccupied with legacy and inheritance. I think about the things that I’ve inherited that I want to keep and what I want to let go. All of that is at the heart of Fat Ham .”

Chicago’s About Face Theatre is also queering classic texts with an exploration of Shakespeare’s works through an LGBTQ+ kaleidoscope. Co-created by Will Willhem and Erin Murray, Willhem challenges the hetero binary “not as a relic of what our society has been, but as a testament to seeing ourselves reflected in history.” About Face has been producing queer theater since 1995 and also offers a youth program to empower the next generation of LGBTQ+ theater-makers.
May 4 – June 3 at About Face Theatre, Chicago .
The Wizard of Oz
There’s no place like home. And no story screams queer like The Wizard of Oz . While we’re all familiar with the 1939 film adaption of L. Frank Baum’s book, plenty of stage productions have delivered unique versions of Dorothy’s trip to Oz. San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater uses the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1988 version (which starred a young Imelda Staunton ) as inspiration, directed and choreogrpahed by Sam Pinkleton.
June 1-25 at American Conservatory Theater, San Francisco .

British theatermaker Rachel Mars’ “gloriously rude new show” comparing modern sexting to the scandalous, hand-written letters of some major figures looks intriguing. I’ve read some of James Joyce’s letters to his lovers at university. They were so flat out down, dirty and imaginative I had a spontaneous orgasm in the library stacks.
James Joyce wasn’t gay. The only ‘dirty’ letters he wrote were to his female lover
Unless you can point me to some evidence that he was gay, and show me where i can read these gay letters you mention, then I’ll assume you’re bvllshltting
While In college I read Joyce’s frank, explicit and obscene letters to Nora Barnacle and found them electrifying. Rachel Mars’ Your Sexts are Sh*t: Older Better Letters at SoHo Playhouse, New York City has not yet opened, but I am assuming her show compares the erotic power of handwritten letters vs sexting. I couldn’t quite remember if Joyce’s letters were written to one or several lovers, but I was not suggesting they were written to a man. They do, however, have an intimate, transgressive, poetic power that transcends contemporary labeling.
I’ve heard some good things about Fat Ham , so that and Judy Gold’s new show, which also sounds interesting.
Lordy, Anthony Rapp is such a 2nd rate actor
Had you ever heard of him before he accused another actor of sexual abuse? Neither had I. Way to boost a career.

YES, I CAN SAY THAT!
Written by Judy Gold and Eddie Sarfaty Directed by BD Wong
Lead support for Yes, I Can Say That! is provided by Dasha Epstein, the Garfield Family Fund in memory of Johanna Garfield, Jim Kierstead, The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, Carol Roaman, and Lynn Bartner-Wiesel and Elisha Wiesel.
Additional support provided by riki kane larimer, daryl roth, and public funds from the new york city department of cultural affairs in partnership with the city council, and the new york state council on the arts with the support of the office of the governor and the new york state legislature. .
