MacKenzie Falls Grampians Australia

On this 11-day Aussie adventure, you’ll discover the everchanging landscapes of the south – from Melbourne to Kangaroo Island. Start in the foodie capital of Melbourne, then see Hanging Rock, Daylesford and Ballarat. Jump on the Great Ocean Road to see why this is one of the world’s most famous road trip drives and be awed by the rugged coastline, a vast ocean expanse and yellow cliffs falling into the sea. From Apollo Bay, you’ll continue the scenic drive to Warrnambool to the iconic 12 Apostles. Learn First Nations history in the Grampians, sample bush tucker and chase waterfalls with some free time to get active. Wander Adelaide and then journey to Kangaroo Island (look out for dolphins!). After meeting some penguins, kangaroos, sea lions and wallabies, you’ll learn about the local farming and art cultures before kicking back on the sandy beaches. What more could you want out of a coastal adventure?

Trip overview

  • Hike the beautiful Pinnacle Walk to the summit of Hanging Rock and discover sweeping views and interesting rock formations made famous by the Peter Weir film ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’.
  • Visit a social enterprise – Wildlife Wonders – and join a conservationist guide to discover the lush fern gullies, eucalypt woodlands and spectacular ocean views of the Otways region.
  • Explore Budj Bim Cultural Landscape with a Gunditijmara guide to learn about First Nations culture first-hand, discover the unique volcanic landscape and dig into a bush tucker grazing plate.
  • Tick driving the Great Ocean Road, marvelling at the 12 Apostles and hiking through Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park off your bucket list, because this road trip does it all.
  • Spend a morning with some of the island’s most delightful creatures, the colony of sea lions that have resided at Seal Bay for hundreds of years.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Blue Carbon Lab. Donations help them mitigate climate change by supporting restoration and protecting blue carbon in coastal wetlands.
  • This trip includes some long drives on winding roads. Travel sickness tablets are recommended for those who experience severe motion sickness.
  • Some of the best scenery on this trip will be found on hikes. So, while this trip doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s recommended if you want to partake in all activities. Please ensure you bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes for spending time outdoors.
  • This trip includes time spent travelling in a private vehicle with your group. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. It’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
  • This itinerary takes in as many of the sights and experiences as possible while on Kangaroo Island. This means that there is little free time for independent exploration and plenty of distance to cover.

Welcome to Melbourne! Or Narrm, in the language of the Wurundjeri people, who are the traditional owners of the land on which Melbourne is now located. Melbourne is the effortlessly hip, unofficial foodie capital of Australia. Here, you can wander some of the trendiest art galleries, marvel at museums and sip countless cups of some of the finest-brewed specialty coffee on the planet. It's recommended that you arrive a few extra days before your adventure starts if you want to experience all this city has to offer. Today, you’ll meet your group leader and fellow travellers bright and early for an 8 am welcome meeting. Then, hit the road and start your journey along the Great Southern Touring Route – AKA Australia’s finest road trip. Your first stop today is Hanging Rock Reserve, where you’ll embark on the famous Pinnacle Walk to the summit. This area was shaped by a volcanic eruption some six million years ago and is an important landmark for three First Nations groups – the Woi Wurrung (Wurundjeri), the Djaara and the Taungurung. Keep your eye out for local wildlife like kangaroos, wallabies and echidnas on your walk before taking in the views from the summit. From here, you’ll drive to Daylesford for lunch and if your trip departs on a Sunday, you’ll have time to explore the Daylesford Sunday Market. Uniquely, only fresh produce sourced within a 50 km radius can be sold at this market. After some time in Daylesford, continue to the historic goldfield town of Ballarat where you’ll stay tonight. Perhaps visit Sovereign Hill or the Art Gallery of Ballarat, with the afternoon and evening at your leisure.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Hanging Rock - Summit Walk
  • Daylesford - Sunday Market

It’s very important that you are on time to begin your tour as we will head out on the road right away. Find more details in the ‘Joining Point Instructions’ section of your Essential Trip Information. We recommend spending a night before your tour begins in Melbourne.

The summit walk at Hanging Rock Reserve, is a Grade 3 (moderate) walk, with a steep uphill section that requires some walking over rocks. It is a 1.8 km return walk taking around 50 minutes. For those that would prefer a more accessible option there is also the 1.8km (30 minutes) base walk loop or the 2.3 km (40 minutes) creek walk.

After breakfast this morning, you’ll say goodbye to Ballarat and head south toward Apollo Bay. You’ll get your first taste of the spectacular Great Ocean Road today as you hit the coastline in Anglesea and follow the scenic highway along to Apollo Bay. This is Eastern Maar country, and was recently returned to the Traditional Owners in Victoria's first native title in a decade. The Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s most famed coastal drives, as you wind by striking windswept cliffs with views across the Southern Ocean, you’ll quickly see why. Once you reach Apollo Bay, you’ll enjoy a special experience at Wildlife Wonders – a social enterprise operated by the Conservation Ecology Centre working to develop and deliver solutions to the most urgent conservation challenges in the Otways region. Apollo Bay is on the doorstep of the Otway National Park, an ecosystem of lush rainforests, ancient plant life, waterfalls and secluded beaches – to name just a few. Join Wildlife Wonders guided walk through the magical Otways bushland where you'll discover lush fern gullies, eucalypt woodlands and spectacular ocean vistas. Learn the secrets of the bush from your conservationist guide and spot local wildlife like koalas and wallabies and, if you’re lucky, a potoroo or bandicoot. Wildlife Wonders invest 100% of profits into vital research and conservation projects to save local threatened species. After this heart-warming visit, you’ll make your way to your accommodation and enjoy free time in this chilled-out beachside town this afternoon.

  • Apollo Bay - Wildlife Wonders Guided Tour

Today’s drive is approximately 3 hours. Today’s walking tour winds along a gentle, 1.4 km path suitable for all abilities.

Today, you really find out why this stretch of road is known as Australia’s finest road trip. Travel from Apollo Bay all the way to Warrnambool, with plenty of scenic stops along the way. Enjoy the dramatic scenery The Great Ocean Road is so well known for – one moment you’ll be marvelling at dramatic cliffs and the surging oceans below and the next you’ll be surrounded by native bushland. There's plenty of lookouts and white powdery beach walks (if the weather permits) to break up the drive today. Plus, the piece de resistance of today’s adventures – some time to discover the rugged splendour of the 12 Apostles. Created by the constant erosion from ocean swells and swirling winds that began some 10-20 million years ago, the incredible rock stacks now rise majestically up to 45 m out of the ocean below. It’s a sight to behold and one you won’t forget any time soon. This evening, you’ll continue to Warrnambool where you might like to join your fellow travellers for dinner and discuss the inspiring sights you witnessed today.

  • Great Ocean Road - Scenic Drive
  • Great Ocean Road - Twelve Apostles

Today’s total driving time is approximately 3-4 hours.

Buckle up for another day on the great open road as we set our sights for our first stop in Budj Bim. This area is located within Gunditjmara Country and is full of culture and incredible volcanic landscapes. You’ll learn more about the history, bushland and wildlife of this area on a walking tour with a Gunditjmara cultural guide. Your guide will give you an overview of the Gunditjmara creation story and point out the extensive marine and birdlife on Tae Rak (Lake Condah). The lake is made up of 1,700 hectares of significant wetlands and stony rises right next to the historic lava flows of Budj Bim National Park. The Gunditjmara people have sustained life here for tens of thousands of years and created what is considered one of Australia’s earliest and largest aquaculture ventures. You’ll gain incredible insight into the history of the Gunditjmara people and how these landscapes were shaped by ancient volcanic movements. After your guided walk, enjoy a grazing board at the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre & Café for lunch. Try all-Australian ingredients like grilled kooyang (eel), grilled macadamia nuts, pickled vegetables, kangaroo, emu and other local bush foods. With a belly full of bush tucker, hit the road to Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park where you’ll have time to explore in the afternoon and enjoy the evening at your leisure.

  • Budj Bim National Park - Bush Foods Grazing Board
  • Budj Bim National Park - Cultural Landscape Walking Tour with Local Aboriginal Guide

Today’s total drive time is approximately 3 hours.

Be sure to fuel up at breakfast today because you’ve got a day full of exploring the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park ahead. You can expect to see majestic waterfalls, rugged sandstone ridges, mountain vistas and magnificent rock art sites on your walks today. Traditionally known as Gariwerd, this region is home to the largest number of rock art paintings and shelters in Southern Australia. Today’s walks will feature these sites and likely introduce you to local wildlife like kangaroos, wallabies, emus and native birds. To top it off, you’ll stop to enjoy a packed picnic lunch in a scenic spot today. With a number of walking trails to choose from, your leader will pick the best, considering weather and track conditions and group ability. This evening, kick your feet up and relax after a full day of walking. Perhaps, meet up with your group for a final dinner together and reflect on the highlights of your great southern adventure.

  • Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park - Day Walks

Today’s walks will be a mix of Grade 2-4 walks in Central or Northern Grampians.

Enjoy a group breakfast with your fellow travellers before a short drive to Stawell. Here, you’ll visit Bunjil’s Cave, a significant cultural site in Australia and one of the most prominent rock-art sites in southern Victoria. In local First Nations culture, Bunjil was the main Dreaming Being of south-eastern Australia. It’s believed that he produced the natural features of the landscapes, from the rolling mountains to the peaceful open ranges. He also gave each tribe their country and created the laws, customs and rights. After time to explore this significant site and learn more about First Nations history, your leader will bid you farewell, and your group will board The Overland train from Stawell, unaccompanied for the stretch to Adelaide, or Tandanya in the language of The Kaurna people, who are the traditional owners of the land on which Adelaide is now located. Operating for more than 130 years, this train is the pick for many travelling between Melbourne and Adelaide. You can expect relaxing views of wheat and sheep farms and snack on treats from the onboard café (although it's recommended that you grab some extra snacks in Stawell before your board). Have your cameras at the ready before you reach the Murray Bridge and you’ll then be treated to views of lush landscape as you descend through the Adelaide Hills into South Australia’s capital. Enjoy a free night before the next leg of your journey starts tomorrow.

The Overland train journey will be unaccompanied by your tour leader, who will return to Melbourne. You will be met on arrival by a transfer to take you to the hotel in the Adelaide city centre. Your tour leader for the next section of the journey will meet you tomorrow morning.

Welcome to Adelaide! Or Tandanya in the language of The Kaurna people, who are the traditional owners of the land on which Adelaide is now located. Adelaide is the capital of South Australia and your gateway to the delights of Kangaroo Island. You'll have a welcome meeting at your hotel in Adelaide at 9 am where you’ll link up with your local leader and the other travellers joining you on this adventure. Find out what’s in store over the coming days, then board your transfer bound for Cape Jervis (approximately 2 hours), from where you’ll jump aboard a ferry and travel to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island (approximately 45 minutes). Be sure to keep an eye out for dolphins swimming alongside the ferry! From the ferry landing, it's a short walk to your hotel. Drop your luggage, then perhaps get to know your group over lunch on the island. In the afternoon, get your first taste of the island’s unique nature by joining your leader and heading out onto the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail, positioned in the dunes overlooking Hog’s Bay. Keep an eye out for wildlife! This evening you'll visit the Penneshaw Penguin Centre for an evening walk to search for the world’s smallest variety of penguins.

  • Kangaroo Island - Penguin tour
  • Kangaroo Island - Penneshaw Sculpture Trail

Australia’s third-largest island, Kangaroo Island is a veritable paradise for wildlife lovers. It’s not just kangaroos you can find here – wallabies, sea lions and echidnas are all locals too. Evidence suggests Aboriginal life existed on the island as far back as 16,000 years, but it was uninhabited by the time Europeans arrived in the early 19th century. The island is now home to 4000 people, and today will be spent diving into local culture and history. First up, head out onto Dudley Peninsula and get a real taste of Aussie culture when you pay a visit to a sheep farm to see how sheep are shorn and meet the owner’s super sweet kelpie dogs. Stop by the Cape Willoughby Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in South Australia. If you’re feeling extra adventurous today, you’ll have the chance to climb the 500 steps to the top of Prospect Hill, the highest point on Kangaroo Island. Next up are visits to some local producers, such as a family-owned eucalyptus oil refinery and a honey farm, a third-generation family business and home to the only pure strain of Ligurian Bee in the world. Then head to the Kangaroo Island Gallery, a community Gallery specifically for the promotion, encouragement, and exposure of artists and craftspeople of Kangaroo Island. Time permitting there may be the option to also visit a local winery and try some of their wines. Finally, head to Kingscote, the largest town on the island, check into your hotel and put your feet up.

  • Kangaroo Island - Sheep Shearing & Sheep Dog Experience
  • Kangaroo Island - Honey Farm

After breakfast, swing by Salt Lagoon to snap some pictures of this scenic spot, then continue towards Emu Bay Beach. If the group fancies, you’ll have the chance to pop into the lavender farm to try some delicious lavender scones. Spend some time stretched out on the white sand or paddling in the pristine, clear waters, then beach hop over to the secluded Stokes Bay, a gorgeous spot for a swim, and voted Australia's most beautiful beach in 2013. Early 2020 saw bushfires ravage Kangaroo Island, with the Stokes Bay region being particularly badly hit. The Stokes Bay Community Hall served as a centrepiece for the settlement since 1952 but was completely destroyed by the fires. Today the area is in recovery, and the National Trust is working with the local community to restore the hall, as well as natural habitats for wildlife. After an afternoon on the beach, return to Kingscote and enjoy an evening at leisure.

  • Kangaroo Island - Full Day Trip to Emu Bay & Stokes Bay
  • Kangaroo Island - Lavender Farm - Free

Start the day with a visit to Seal Bay. There are no actual seals here, but there are plenty of sea lions! The sea lion colony you see today has existed at Seal Bay for thousands of years. Join an up close and personal ranger-led wildlife experience which will allow you to observe the lives of these endearing creatures as you watch them swim, play and bask in the sun. Continue on to Little Sahara, named for its rippling sand dunes that resemble the North African desert. While here you may have the chance to hire a sandboard and ride your way down the dunes. Next up is something really special – head to Vivonne Bay, which is not only one of the most stunning beaches on Kangaroo Island but the whole of Australia. Venture into the Flinders Chase National Park and come face to face with the aptly named Remarkable Rocks, made up of naturally sculpted granite boulders. You’ll also check out the impressive Admirals Arch and take some time to explore the park before heading back to Kingscote.

Start the day by heading to American River (not actually a river, or American, but a little town on the northeast coast of the island), where you’ll find a schooner boat first built in 1803 called 'Independence'. Learn about the boat’s history and see how it’s being rebuilt, then take a scenic walk through coastal scrub towards the remains of an old fish cannery built at the end of the 19th century, keeping an eye out for the rare and striking glossy-black cockatoos along the way. Get ready to say goodbye to Kangaroo Island as you make the drive back to Penneshaw and catch the ferry back to the mainland. Dock in Cape Jervis and hop on our private transfer back to Adelaide (approximately 2 hours). You can expect to arrive back at our hotel in Adelaide at around 4.30 pm at which time the tour comes to an end.

  • Mithril74 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful wildlife viewing in S. Australia Recently spent 8 days doing a nature safari around the southern part of NSW and Victoria in Australia. Tour was led by Martin from Echidna Walkabout Nature Tours. It was terrific! Everything ran so smoothly, right from being picked up at our hotel in Melbourne to being dropped off at the local airport in Mildura on our way home. The wildlife viewing was sensational - we got amazing views of a wide array of animals, including kangaroos, emu, flying foxes, koala, wombat, lizards, snakes and a huge variety and number of birds. Martin is an indefatigable leader with an expansive knowledge of the flora, fauna and history of the area. He made every day fun and entertaining, and ensured everyone got plenty of chances for good views and photo opportunities. The hotels were all comfortable with private facilities, the food was plentiful and enjoyable, and the small group size (7 travellers plus the guide) worked perfectly. I would not hesitate to recommend this company, and particularly Martin, to anyone considering a similar tour in this area. Read more Written October 27, 2023
  • margarets311 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wildlife experience With only 4 days to get a snapshot of Australia’s wild places, wildlife and birds this was a really fantastic and memorable experience. Martin, our guide worked incredibly hard to ensure we saw as many different species of bird and animal as was possible. He knew the calls of all the birds and could spot them a mile off - literally! We stayed in two lovey guesthouses and had really nice food in cafes and restaurants en route. The trip was well organised and it was great to know that the company does a lot of work planting trees to ensure koalas and other wildlife have a future. A thoroughly great trip and we wouldn’t hesitate to use this company for other trips in the future. Read more Written February 5, 2023
  • Marie B 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great tour! Our guide, Brett, was wonderful. We saw three koalas in their natural habitat in the bush. One came down right in front of us and crossed the road! The guide provided a gourmet picnic lunch with Lamington for dessert. He also made hot tea with Lemon Eucalyptus leaves. Next we went to a different refuge and saw lots of kangaroos in their natural habitat. Perfect day. Read more Written May 4, 2020

  • Jane H 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful Tour! Knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide. Our family went on the Kangaroo and Koalas tour. The guide, Brett, gave us a wonderful tour. We saw 4 koalas and they were able to give us the background on their lives and interactions. They are part of a Koala research project and part of our ticket prices goes to support the research. They had all the koala gossip. It was kind of like an episode of Meerkat Manor on Animal Planet. Brett was also knowledgeable about birds, which was great for me as a birdwatcher from a different continent. Brett knew where a tawny frogmouth had nested and took us to that location. He managed to spot this unique bird for us. The lunch was delicious. After that we went to a different park to look for kangaroos. We first spotted a wallaby and then kangaroos. We walked through the bush for a while and found many, many kangaroos, which were remarkably unconcerned by our presence. The tour was well worth the price and I'd gladly go back again. • theresa181 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing Tour I would recommend this tour to anyone who loves to view wildlife in nature and not in a zoo. We saw 3 different Koalas in the trees, and one of them KiKi actually climbed down the tree she was in and scampered over to another on and climbed up. How lucky we were to be able to witness this. So cool. We saw Emus also. They are huge. And very quietly watched many kangaroo while keeping our distance. Hailey was our tour guide and you can tell she loves her job. She has a keen eye for seeing many things in the wild. She pointed out many birds and a tree possum. It was so much fun. Read more Written March 17, 2020

Brett, our guide, was so knowledgeable and entertaining the entire time. Not only did he teach us about koalas and kangaroos, but he educated us on Australian history. It was really special to be able to see the animals in their native habitat and knowing that the money we paid for the tour went back to preserve the animals in their natural homes made it that much better. This tour exceeded our expectations. Amy, our excellent guide, showed us a variety of habitats and we saw a very wide range of birds and animals and we learnt a lot about the ecology and geology of the area. The food and accommodation was good but what made the trip so good was the natural, humorous and informative way Amy conducted it. Read more Written March 1, 2020

Best tour to see wild koalas and kangaroos in Melb

As an Australian , you might wonder why I would be interested in joining a “Koalas and Kangaroos in the Wild” tour. Surely I see these animals regularly? Don’t they all live where I live, sleeping in the trees in my garden and hopping alongside us as we drive? As much as I would love this to happen, well the sleeping in trees part anyway, these are all myths.

Best tour to see wild koalas and kangaroos in Melbourne

Whilst, I have been fortunate enough to see plenty of these wonderful creatures in my time, they are definitely not an everyday occurrence. You see, I live in the city, and these native Australian animals live in the bush. It’s also one thing to see them, and entirely another to be able to learn more about them. To learn more is to understand more, which in turn helps us to protect them.

“The Koalas and Kangaroos in the Wild” tour operated by Echidna Walkabout Tours was a perfect way to do both. I  got to learn so much about them when I joined guide Scott for a  day out in the Western Plains of Victoria, about 45 minutes west of Melbourne .

Heading out of town

As the cityscape gave way to open plains and more trees, I knew it was going to be a great day. A Canadian and British gentleman and two Panamanian women were my travel buddies en route to the You Yangs, home of the koalas and Eastern Grey kangaroos.

Watching these visitors to my country walk through Australian bushland, looking for koalas, whilst taking in all of the surrounding beauty made my heart sing. I watched them, as we walked one track after another, eyes skyward, necks stretched as far as they could reach, willing each tree to be the one that would have a fluffy grey bear.

Looking for koalas

Time moved on, and every so often, their head would fall and shoulders slump as the koalas failed to appear. Our guide, Scott, moved us to different locations in search of them.  Each time, he explained what we were looking for and why we might find them in a particular location.

This, after all, is a wild, nature tour. Koalas moved every day, as a general rule.  No animals are kept in captivity so everything is subjected to the forces of nature. It is possible, that you could walk all day and never find one. I found myself looking harder, on behalf of my fellow travellers, hoping to spot the very thing they had come looking for.

Not one but two koalas

Eventually, we were rewarded, not once but twice.  Firstly, baby KiKi, a sweet little ball of fluff, was spotted, doing what koalas do best….sleeping.  Koalas are nocturnal animals, so our timing was right in the middle of their siesta.  Watching everyone’s eyes light up in amazement at these sleeping bundles was pretty special.  Eventually, she awoke just in time to give us a cheeky smile and wonder what all the fuss was about.

All koalas in this area are geo tagged by the guides and researchers when they are spotted.  Three photos are taken each time a koala is seen.  The first notes the area they have been found in, the second notes the koala and the third photo is taken of the nose, a specific way of identifying an individual koala.  All of this information is a valuable source of intelligence to the koala researchers.

Later in the morning, we had the pleasure of meeting Pat.  Well, a virtual, up a tree type of meeting.  Pat, an older koala, was less interested in being on show, keeping her head firmly tucked in and away from our peeping eyes.

Learning from others

Throughout the day, the questions that came from the others with regard to the Australian bush and wildlife was interesting. Information that is obvious to me, is an opportunity to learn for others.  It’s exactly what I do when I’m in someone else’s country.  The desire to learn more and improve their perspective was refreshing.

A bush lunch

A trip to the Aussie bush just wouldn’t be the same without a billy tea lunch.  After spending the morning tramping over the paths, stepping over branches, and watching the many birds that came our way, we stopped for a bite to eat.  The wind had started to pick up midway through the day, so the rustle of leaves overhead provided some typical ambient bush noise.

The looks on the faces of the others was hilarious as they watched our guide put leaves from a variety of nearby eucalyptus trees into the boiling water.  It was a mix between fear and nervousness, but it was playing out in a very visible way.  He then proceeded to swing the billy, using one arm, around and around in a circle.  This, according to the tales of the bushmen, is how real tea is made.  The end result is a hot brew with an evident minty taste.  The British man, as you could imagine, took enormous pleasure from it.  When combined with an ANZAC biscuit and a piece of lamington cake, he was in heaven.

Kangaroo spotting

After lunch, we left the You Yangs and made our way to Serendip, a former sheep station which is now an animal sanctuary.  With over 20% reforested, it’s also a great place for bird breeding.

The Eastern Greys are also the resident kangaroos out here.  Walking slowly, and in a group once more, we make our way around the outside of a line of trees.  Within the sanctuary of the trees, a group of kangaroos rest in the afternoon sun.  Like the koalas, these kangaroos are nocturnal, saving their energy during the day for their night time activities.

Bird watching

Bird watchers are frequently drawn to this area. Down by the water, evidence of the bird breeding programs can be clearly seen. The birdlife is indeed plentiful here.

More than just a tour company

Echidna Tours is also a strong promoter and enforcer of the environment and its conservation. As evidence of this, 50% off all tour profits are invested directly back into conservation efforts including koala research. To grow the conservation message, those participants on the tour are also encouraged to assist with one of their important programs.

The proliferation of boneweed, a plant introduced from South Africa to the Western Plains area has had a direct and profound impact on the koala population. As participants, the issue was explained to us and we were then encouraged to remove the offending plants as we made our way through the bush.  Little by little it makes a difference to a point where their research can attribute a 12% increase in the koala population in this area as a result of the removal of this plant.

The guide explaining to us about the noxious plant boneweed

Staff are involved in a tree planting program, where small trees are cultivated at their homes and then eventually planted back out in the bush.

Despite probably not having huge expectations of spending a day out in the bush looking for native Australian animals, I was pleasantly surprised.  The tour was a great blend of information about the wildlife we saw and also the company’s associated conservation efforts. It was conducted at a pace that would make it easy for people of all ages and conditions to participate in and it was a lot of fun too. Obviously having the right type of guide plays a big part in this too.

If you are a visitor to Australia, or just an Aussie who would love to learn more about these animals, I’d highly recommend this tour. It’s an easy day trip out of Melbourne, and every aspect of the day is taken care of for you. It is run in a highly professional manner and the tour guides are well educated in everything you need to know about the areas that are visited, the animals, the conservation projects and are quite willing just to have a chat as well.

The “Koala and Kangaroos in the Wild ” tour operates from Melbourne, Australia.

Apart from Christmas Day and Boxing Day (25/26 December), tours operate all year round.

Pick ups occur at five different locations in the Melbourne inner city area.  Pickup times range from 8.10am – 9am depending on location.

Return drop offs are in the same location as the pick up points, somewhere between 4pm-5pm.

  • Melbourne’s weather is subject to frequent change so it’s a good idea to take clothing to suit all four seasons.  A good hat, sunscreen, good walking shoes, umbrella, rain jacket and a warm jacket are all a good idea.  You don’t need to walk everywhere with this gear.  All can be left safely in the mini bus when walking through the bush.
  • I can’t stress the good walking shoes enough.  We walked about 8km through bushland that is full of broken branches, holes and other obstacles.  Do yourself a favour and leave the heels and city shoes at home.
  • Listen to the guide and remember to be respectful of others, the environment and of course the animals you come across.  This is their patch!
  • Take a water bottle.  The guide will have water on board but it’s just easier if you take your own bottle.
  • Do let the company know of any dietary requirements when booking so that your needs can be catered for.
  • Don’t forget your camera.  You don’t want to miss any opportunities.
  • With regard to your pickup point, make sure you know exactly where they will pick you up from.  Some hotels that are in the pick up locations have multiple lobbies on different streets so it can be a bit confusing.

Hi, I'm Joanna, the author of The Blond Travels. In the worlds of Thailand and Portugal, I feel like a fish in water - and it's no coincidence! I've been exploring Thailand for over a decade, and I've settled in Portugal for 6 years now. My mission is to support Dreamers - just like you - in discovering these fascinating countries and helping those in love with them find their own place on Earth, preferably for good! Let's uncover these unique corners of the world together.

You can see koalas and kangaroos around Melbourne and you can see them in the wild! With a little bit of luck and driving around, you will be able to spot them all hopping around, or lazying on a tree.

One of the reasons why I came to Australia was to see the kangaroos and koalas. They are one of my favourite animals (I also love hippos), so a trip to Oz wouldn’t be complete without spotting a skippy, or a sleepy, gumtree eating cute bear. I expected to see koalas and kangaroos around Melbourne, but I thought I would go to the zoo. I was so excited when my friend, Sylvia, took me to some less known places and we actually saw them in the wild!

Sylvia was determined to show me off the beaten path places. We went on many walks and she showed me the city, bars and the street art in Melbourne . and therefore took me to two of them, where I had a great pleasure of seeing the animals in the wild. I spent an amazing time taking photos and observing koalas and kangaroos in their natural habitat. I will never forget this trip!

Below you will find some information on places we visited as well as some useful tips. I hope you will also be able to see koalas and kangaroos around Melbourne.

The best place to see kangaroos in Melbourne

Are you also a fan of kangas? Here is the best and the most unusual place to see kangaroos around Melbourne.

Woodlands Historic Park

We got up on an overcast Sunday, thinking what we should do with the day. It was cold-ish and I wasn’t too keen on going to the beach. So we went on a search for kangaroos. We drove to Woodlands Historic Park . This turned out to be a double score: the park is not only full of wild kangaroos, but is also a special place for the Aboriginal people, who are owners of that piece of land.

The entry part of the park is the Aboriginal cemetery, where till this day the native Australians bury their relatives. The graves are spread among trees. Some don’t have names, but quite a lot not only have written information about the dead (who they were, who was their family, what they liked when they were alive), but also are surrounded by items related to the things they enjoyed doing. So, there would be a football, a pot with a plant, a bottle of whiskey, pink ribbons and hair clips. I found myself wandering among the graves and thinking of the people buried in the ground there. It was so easy to imagine what kind of people they were.

graves of aborigines in Melbourne Woodland Historic Park

Most of the park is kept in its wild state and it is very similar to the landscape seen by the European settlers in 1840s.

But, back to the kangaroos. They are not easy to spot. Their grey fur melts with the surroundings, making them almost invisible. There are lots of them in the park, but you really need to pay attention to the surroundings.

The reason why I like them so much is the way they observe people. They tend to stop, stand straight and watch you – it seems like they think: ‘who is it? why are they here?’

They usually escape when you try to come closer, but be careful they are strong animals and can attack people when they feel threatened.

The best place to see koalas around Melbourne

As much as kangaroos are considered pests and there are quite a lot of them running around, koalas are not as common and are harder to spot. Their grey fur is almost the same colour as the gumtree they eat. They sit high on the trees and don’t move much and are pretty quiet. They are also very picky when it comes to food. Out of over 700 gumtrees they eat only around 30 of them, so you can only see them in certain areas.

Your plan for your first trip to Thailand

Great ocean road .

One of them is the bushland between Lorne and Apollo Bay, which are both located on the Great Ocean Road. Drive up the Grey River Road and look at the top of the trees.

I was very lucky as one of the small koalas for an unknown reason climbed down a tree. I was literally a meter from it. It was an amazing experience.

9 Places To See Koalas In Melbourne and around

by mumslittleexplorers · March 19, 2021

Looking for places see koalas in Melbourne or regional Victoria? Sure, you could go to one of the Melbourne Zoo’s but we have rounded up some places that you can see these fascinating animals in their natural habitat that aren’t too far from the centre of Melbourne. Find below some of the best places to see koalas in Melbourne and Regional Victoria.

Facts about Koalas

While the iconic kangaroo is easy to find bounding across the countryside, spotting koalas in Melbourne takes a little more research and a lot more patience.

Koalas are notoriously drowsy creatures. They sleep for 20 hours a day due to their nutrient-shy diet of eucalyptus, which provides enough water for survival but very little energy to leave their perch.

Alongside their sluggish characteristics, koalas are naturally camouflaged by the grey gum trees they reside in. This again can make them difficult to spot as they hide high in the trees, but thankfully Victoria’s koala population is thriving.

From Gippsland to the Great Ocean Road, a short road trip from Melbourne will have you in awe of these cuties in no time.

Best way to spot koalas

When searching for koalas in Melbourne, there are two important factors – when to look and where to look.

When to look : As mentioned, koalas are only active for a few hours a day. This is usually at dusk or dawn, so time your koala quest during this time.

Where to look : Remember to look up. Koalas will be found securely nestled in the fork of eucalyptus trees, often with their head tucked away from the wind, snuggled up asleep. Search for the grey tufts of fur in the forks, and you may even spot a joey who stays with its parent until 12 months old.

One advantage of spotting Koalas in Melbourne is that due to the temperate climate of Victoria, the koalas are much larger and fluffier. They can grow up to 14kg in comparison to their Northern relatives who have thinner fur and only weigh around 8kg.

8 Places you can see koalas in Melbourne (or just outside)

Now you know where to look, when and what to look out for here are the best places to find koalas in Melbourne and the surrounding areas. Like we mentioned, you can always head to the Melbourne zoo to see koalas, however if you are looking for koalas in their natural habitat you will need to venture out a little.

1. Warrandyte State Park

Warrandyte State Park is the closest National Park to Melbourne; reachable within a half hour’s drive from the CBD. If you head to the park via Warrandyte Road, then Pound Road you will reach Pound Bend Reserve – a hub of easy walking trails, picnic grounds and…koalas!

If you have time, enjoy the Pound Bend River Walk which is around 3.5km, taking 1.5 hours to complete at a pleasant pace. The trail starts at the picnic area, before leading you to the historic Pound Bend Tunnel which is a result of gold mining in the 1870s.

As you follow the track upstream, watch your step on the slippery rocks but also keep an eye on the treetops as koalas are known to frequently lounge here.

The park is free to enter, and the public can access it 24 hours a day.

2. Kennett River

Not only is Kennett River one of the best places to see koalas near Melbourne but it is often considered the koala capital of Australia. Kennett River is around 2 hours from Melbourne CBD and is one of the many koala prone spots along the Great Ocean Road . (Which by the way is a great day trip from Melbourne ).

As you head off Grey River Road, you will come to Kafe Koala which is open from 7 am to 7 pm. Grab a coffee here to fuel your koala spotting skills. The Kennett River Koala Walk isn’t officially marked; there is little signage or fanfare – simply a road lined with towering gum trees and dozens of koalas.

It’s also one of the best places to witness the rarity of koalas on the ground as they waddle from the trees into the neighbouring holiday park.

As a tip, for an unforgettable stay along Great Ocean Road stay at the Kennett River Holiday Park or somewhere close by. Not only are you guaranteed to wake up to these fluffy friends sleeping overhead but also vibrant native birds such as King Parrots and Crimson Rosellas.

3. Bimbi Park, Otway Ranges

You really don’t need to go far to spot koalas in at Bimbi Park , you are literally walking amongst them. Famously known for being able to sleep under the koalas , all year round you can spot these amazing animals in the treetops morning and night.

Located in the Otway National Park, you can visit for the day or you can stay over night. Camp out under the koalas or stay in one of their solar cabins off the grid and explore these breathtaking forests and nearby beaches, far away from any noise or traffic. Read our full review here.

4. Cape Otway

Around 45 minutes along the Great Ocean Road from Kennett River, you will enter further koala territory as you drive towards Cape Otway Lighthouse – the oldest lighthouse in Australia.

If the stunning scenery isn’t guaranteed to make you slow down, the towering gum trees will as koalas are renown for sheltering in the area. Make sure to pick a safe spot to park up before admiring the dozy furballs enjoy their lunch.

Alternatively, situated within Cape Otway National Park is Bimbi Park camping ground which offers the opportunity to “camp under koalas.” It offers idyllic surroundings for koalas and camping enthusiasts alike, allowing you to fall asleep admiring the Australian icons before making the 3.5-hour drive back to Melbourne on the Great Ocean Road. Check their latest prices here.

5. Phillip Island

When searching for koalas in Melbourne, one of the most popular places is Phillip Island, 90 minutes South East of the city. Phillip Island can be done in a day trip depending where you are in Melbourne, however it is more popular as a weekend getaway.

Although slightly overshadowed by the hugely popular penguin parade, Phillip Island is also home to a wealth of koalas, which can be admired at the Koala Reserve.

The Koala Reserve offers the unique opportunity for visitors to be immersed in the koalas’ natural habitat as you stroll along treetop boardwalks, offering face to face encounters if you’re lucky. There is also the opportunity to experience a ranger-led “Koala Eco-Explorer Tour” which offers a behind the scenes insight into the koala way of life.

The Koala Reserve not only guarantees a koala sighting but more importantly, within their natural habitat – enjoying the gum trees and snoozing until sunset as they would in the wild. The bushland boardwalks also allow a glimpse of more Australian icons such as possums, echidnas, snakes and wallabies.

Following your walk is the interactive visitor centre with friendly staff on hand ready to answer all your koala questions. The Koala Reserve is open daily from 10 am until 5 pm, and tickets for adults are $13.20 with children 15 years or younger at $6.60. For an extra saving, combine the Koala Reserve ticket with a penguin parade ticket for an even more memorable day trip.

6. Healesville Sanctuary

Located in the picturesque Yarra Valley only an hour from Melbourne, Healesville Sanctuary is not only home to many of Australia’s most captivating species but also koalas roaming freely.

Like the set up on Phillip Island, there are allocated boardwalks for visitors to explore the bushland at “koala level” allowing visitors to get up close with the charming creatures.

Healesville Sanctuary also provides the perfect setting to catch a guaranteed glimpse of other endearing animals such as kangaroos, platypus, wallabies, dingoes and emus.

The sanctuary is open 9am-5pm, seven days a week. Tickets are $38 for adults and $19 for children under 16. However, children can visit for free on weekends and during school holidays. You can also book a specific koala experience.

7.   French Island National Park

A 1500 strong koala colony awaits at French Island National Park. There were so many koalas on French Island that some were moved to boost numbers in Kinglake National Park which lost many of its koalas to bushfires.

To get there, drive just over an hour from Melbourne CBD to Stony Point. It’s then a short 10-minute ferry ride to the unspoiled landscapes of French Island.

All walks commence from Tankerton foreshore where the ferry drops you off and will lead you through untouched bushland. Whether you opt for a full day walking track or a short hike you will be treated to scenes of snoozing koalas or curious joeys peeking from the treetops.

If you can’t face returning to the city and fancy a little longer in the serene surroundings, you can stay overnight on French Island at Fairhaven Campground. Fairhaven campground is approximately 5km walk from the ferry terminal, located in the stunning dunes behind the beach and offering an unforgettable sleep under the stars for FREE. Pitches must be booked in advance as there are only six but there is no fee to camp with the koalas.

8. Werribee Gorge State Park

Thanks to over 500 million years of geological history, Werribee Gorge is one of the most spectacular gorges near the city and better yet, one of the best places to see koalas in Melbourne.

Situated 8km west of Bacchus Marsh, Werribee Gorge State Park is a 50-minute drive from the CBD. Between the rugged terrain and untouched woodland there is a wealth of wildlife including wallabies, echidnas, Eastern Grey Kangaroos and of course, koalas nestled in the eucalyptus.

To protect the natural landscape very little has been done to pave or gravel walkways around the park, so not all hikes are family-friendly. However, there are plenty of picnic areas and rock pools for paddling if you head along the Short Circuit Walk to Meikles Point Picnic Area or Quarry Picnic Area.

 9. Raymond Island

Although not quite as close to Melbourne as our other recommendations, we included this option because it really is one of the best places to see koalas. Although it takes 3-4 hours to reach Raymond Island from Melbourne, it will prove a rewarding road trip as the island is home to over 200 koalas. Located within the Gippsland Lakes system, you can reach Raymond Island via a short ferry ride from Paynesville – around 300km from Melbourne CBD.

As you arrive at Ferry Park, you will be greeted with a large information board which shares fascinating koala facts as well as the route for the 1.2km Raymond Island Koala Walk. You can also purchase a factual booklet, with all proceeds going towards the protection and sustainability of the koala population.

The walk is ideal for the entire family as it takes only 30 minutes to complete. However, allow much longer for the numerous photo opportunities you’ll need to capture the koalas snoozing above. The walk is open to the public from 6:40 am to 10 pm.

As you make your way back to the ferry, keep your eyes peeled in the township as it’s not uncommon to see koalas crossing the street or perched on pavements on Raymond Island.

University of Melbourne's Return to Country program celebrates the genius of Indigenous engineering

A rock structure with cascading water set near the banks of a river, with blue cloudy skies behind.

For thousands of years, carefully placed rocks in rivers and creeks have created fish and eel traps that have fed generations of Indigenous families all over Australia.

Some examples of such early Indigenous engineering still exist today and have been recognised nationally and globally as protected heritage sites.

When engineer Joseph West, a Murawarri man, looks at the heritage-listed Brewarrina fish traps (Baiame's Ngunnhu) in north-west New South Wales, he sees more than just a few rocks in a river.

He sees ancient ingenuity that could help solve problems in rural and remote Indigenous communities today.

And he sees a way to inspire a new generation of Indigenous engineers and STEM experts, as part of a Return to Country program at the University of Melbourne that aims to help Aboriginal students stay connected to their communities.

Dr West, the university's Associate Dean (Indigenous) with the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, hopes taking students onto country to see traditional structures like the Brewarrina fish traps will also motivate them to create innovative projects to benefit regional and rural communities.

"[The fish trap] is really an amazing engineering structure, which has stood the test of time," he said.

"As an engineer myself, I could only dream of creating something that lasts thousands and thousands of years, even to the point where early last year, people were still catching fish from those fish traps."

A man wearing spectacles and a scarf stands outside a sandstone building.

Dr West's own journey towards engineering started by chance when, as a teenager in Bourke in western NSW, he saw an army truck parked across the road from Bourke High School and wandered over to have a chat.

That conversation led to him joining the army.

"Since that day, I got my engineering degree while serving in the army and did my PhD after leaving regular service," Dr West said.

Recently, Dr West returned to his old high school to launch the Return to Country program, and took engineering students to view the fish traps, which are believed to be at least 3,000 years old and were heritage-listed in 2005.

"For engineers who are Indigenous, it provides a massive opportunity for them to bring their community challenges, issues and futures into the modern technology space, and bring those modern technologies back," Dr West said.

"Who better to design a new solution for a local issue to deal with water, or resources or energy than an Indigenous person from that community?" he said.

A wide river with weaving rock formations visable on the surface and trees on the embankment.

Inspiration for all outback kids

Dr West said the Return to Country program gave students the chance to return to First Nations communities and show how STEM subjects could bring new opportunities to children in the outback.

"I'm talking about everyone in the remote rural communities, not just Indigenous people," he said.

Gundungurra woman Tully Mahr, who is studying a Master of Engineering at the University of Melbourne, jumped at the chance to participate in the program and said it was a great way to engage communities in the world of STEM, particularly minority groups.

A smiling woman with long, curly brown hair.

"It's something I've been advocating for, for quite a few years … for minorities in STEM, and particularly … Indigenous peoples and STEM," she said.

She hopes the Return to Country program can be a starting point for more diverse representation in STEM.

"My hope is for young children in those communities, Indigenous or not, to believe that they do have a space in this field," Ms Mahr said.

A meeting place, a sharing place

Brewarrina Aboriginal Cultural Museum tour guide Bradley Hardy said archaeologists and scientists who had visited the site over the years "all have different opinions about the ages of the fish traps".

However, they all agree that the fish traps "are one of the oldest man-made structures in the world".

A man with a white shirt and cap stands in front of a river.

Mr Hardy said it was believed the traps were constructed by several tribes from the surrounding region, which could indicate they were also a meeting place for tribes to come together.

"In the beginning, it was a meeting place, gathering place, sharing place," Mr Hardy said.

"In this new time, it's still a meeting place, gathering place, sharing place, a place where we share rivers, that brought the community together, and still brings the community together.

"Our whole people had a difference of an opinion, but they still came together to build the traps for a purpose and they're still here today even after the destruction [by floods]."

Another example of early Indigenous engineering is the Budj Bim eel traps, in south-western Victoria, that are believed to be at least 6,000 years old and became Australia's 20th site on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019.

People walk down a path in front of a lake.

Engineering roots in 'Indigenous knowledge'

Dr West said engineering students from all backgrounds could learn a lot from how Indigenous knowledge could be used to design and develop projects that were long-lasting and impactful.

"I think there's a whole bunch of benefits, not just for Indigenous people, but also for non-Indigenous engineers," he said.

"The Indigenous way of thinking and developing and designing products is a really good exemplar of the origins of where engineering came from.

"So, we stand to benefit a lot from just having Indigenous knowledge in our engineering curriculum."

Dr West said there was still work to be done for universities to create a seamless pathway for regional and rural First Nations kids to be able pursue further studies in these areas.

He hopes a program like this will open the door for universities to think more about initiatives that will allow students to study while also staying connected to their communities.

"It's hard when you come from rural and regional areas to stay connected to your country, when you go away and do university and study," he said.

"We wanted to get our members back into the community, to reconnect, and to also show how good engineering is as an option for a career choice."
