Best time to visit kenya for a safari.

For an unparalleled wildlife safari experience combined with the perfect beach getaway, the best time to visit Kenya for safari is generally from early July to late September. This timeframe aligns with Kenya’s dry season, which also extends across East Africa. Notably, it coincides with the Great Migration, a breathtaking spectacle where vast herds of wildebeest and zebras traverse the Mara River on their journey from the Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara. Additional favorable months for a Kenya safari include June and the stretch between December and February. Even October and November, characterized by Kenya’s short rains, provide a suitable window for safari enthusiasts.

Conversely, April and May mark Kenya’s long rainy season, resulting in potentially impassable roads. Despite this, in parks and well-equipped regions, this period presents a unique opportunity for budget-friendly safaris. The lush greenery and awe-inspiring topography during the long rainy season contribute to a distinct and enchanting safari experience. Planning a visit during this time allows for a more economical safari adventure while reveling in the vibrant landscapes that Kenya has to offer.

Where to visit on a Kenya Safari

Our Kenya safari tours will take you to the most famous parks in Kenya and Africa at large including the Masai Mara the where the largest animal migration; the Wildebeests Migration also known as ‘ The Great Migration ’ happens every year seeing thousands upon thousands of visitors who stream the area to witness the wildlife pilgrimage.

Apart from the Masai Mara we also arrange safari tours to the Amboseli National Park famous for the Postcard views of large elephants with the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro as the backdrop, but also the Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Park of the legendary man-eating lions. Other places of interest where our Kenya safaris will take you include Lake Nakuru National Park and other rift valley lake including Lake Baringo , Lake Elmenteita and the Lake Bogoria where you will be amazed by the colorful flocks of flamingoes among other aquatic and non-aquatic birds.

At Safari Desire we offer mainly private tailor made safari tours in Kenya and can therefore plan tours to other less travelled national parks and private game reserves like; the Olpejeta Conservancy , Meru National Park , Lewa Conservancy and other game reserves like Taita Hills , Ngutuni Wildlife Conservancy as well as Lumo Conservancy closer to Mombasa, Diani, Malindi and the Kenya Coast in general.

With offices in both Nairobi and Mombasa, we offer Kenya safaris from Mombasa, as well as Nairobi Safari tours, with some tours starting at Nairobi and ending at Mombasa or Diani Beach; like our affordable 14 Days Kenya safari and Beach holiday .

What are the best national parks for safari tours from Nairobi?

Nairobi, the vibrant capital city of Kenya, serves as an excellent starting point for unforgettable safari adventures. From Nairobi, you can embark on exciting safari tours to some of Kenya’s most renowned national parks and wildlife reserves. Here are three of the best national parks for safari tours from Nairobi:

Maasai Mara National Reserve

The Maasai Mara is perhaps the most famous safari destination in Kenya, and for a good reason. Located approximately a 4-5 hour drive from Nairobi, it offers a remarkable opportunity to witness the Great Migration, one of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles. Millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores migrate from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to the Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing grounds, attracting numerous predators like lions and cheetahs. The Maasai Mara is also home to an abundance of wildlife year-round, making it an ideal destination for thrilling game drives and hot air balloon safaris.

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park, located just a few hours from Nairobi, is renowned for its stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. This park offers a unique safari experience, combining incredible wildlife encounters with picturesque landscapes. Amboseli is famous for its large herds of elephants, as well as other wildlife like lions, giraffes, zebras, and a variety of bird species. Exploring the park against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peaks is a photographer’s dream come true.

Tsavo National Parks

Tsavo National Park is divided into two separate parks, Tsavo East and Tsavo West, and together they form one of Kenya’s largest and most diverse wildlife conservancies. Located about a 4-5 hour drive from Nairobi, Tsavo is known for its rugged terrain, red elephants, and the fascinating Mzima Springs, where you can view hippos and crocodiles underwater from a unique observatory. The park is also home to diverse wildlife, including lions, leopards, buffalos, and numerous bird species. Tsavo’s expansive landscapes and distinct geography make it a captivating safari destination.

Each of these national parks near Nairobi offers a distinct safari experience, whether you’re interested in witnessing the Great Migration, enjoying breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, or exploring the vast landscapes of Tsavo. Giraffes and Zebras

Kenya is also home to an abundance of giraffes, particularly the Rothschild’s giraffe, reticulated giraffe, and the Maasai giraffe. What transport is provided for safari tours from Nairobi?

Safari tours from Nairobi often feature specialized 4×4 safari jeeps as the primary mode of transportation, and these vehicles offer a range of features and benefits to enhance your wildlife adventure:

Customized for Wildlife Viewing

4×4 safari jeeps are purpose-built for wildlife viewing. They are designed with open-topped or pop-up roofs, allowing unobstructed views of the surrounding landscapes and wildlife. This design is perfect for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts, as it provides excellent angles for capturing those breathtaking moments in the wild.

Comfort and Safety

These safari jeeps prioritize passenger comfort and safety. They are equipped with comfortable seats and ample legroom, ensuring you can relax during extended game drives. Safety features like seatbelts and roll bars are standard, providing peace of mind as you traverse uneven terrain. Moreover, the vehicles are driven by experienced safari guides who are well-versed in navigating national parks and reserves, ensuring your safety at all times.

Expert Guides

One of the significant benefits of safari jeeps is the expertise of your guides. Knowledgeable safari guides accompany you on your journey, sharing insights about the animals, ecosystems, and local culture. They have an intimate understanding of wildlife behaviour and can take you to the best spots for wildlife sightings, making your safari experience educational and exciting.

Access to Remote Areas

Safari jeeps are ideal for accessing remote and off-road areas within national parks and reserves. They can handle challenging terrains like muddy tracks and river crossings, granting you access to secluded spots where wildlife often congregates. Nairobi, Kenya - 5 Places to See if an African Safari is on your Travel Bucket List

W ith a mix of ethnicities and nationalities worldwide, Nairobi , the capital city of Kenya, warmly embraces all her visitors and works to make you at home quickly. Yet despite having a space for everyone who visits, Nairobi still sets itself apart and offers a unique vacation to all its visitors.

If an authentic safari experience is on your bucket list, Nairobi is definitely worth considering. Here are some recommendations to make the most of your trip to Kenya.

The Nairobi Culture

Nairobi is a busy city just like any other city in the world. The streets are bustling as ever and there are tons of places to visit and see. As a Nairobian tourist, it would help to learn a few Swahili words. “ Hujambo ” for greeting or “ Habari yako ”, “ Karibu ” for “welcome”, “ asante ” means “thank you”, “ pole ” means “sorry”, and “ tafadhali ” means “please”. See the incredible thing about Nairobi, nobody expects a foreigner to be fluent in Swahili. Throw in one of the above words and continue your speech in English and that’s more than enough.

Beyond language, politeness is paramount in Nairobi. Tip your servers in the restaurants when you can. Always start all your conversations with greetings and don’t leave too many leftovers . Wasting food is looked down upon in Kenyan culture.

There is no strict dress code in Nairobi, much less for a visitor. Fridays in Nairobi are spent socializing in malls, bars, clubs, and or at restaurants for tea or coffee. If you want a never-ending nightlife, find your way to the Westlands . Indulge in some club-hopping before you retire for the night.

Things To Do In Nairobi

1. visit nairobi national park.

About an hour from the city center, you will find Nairobi National Park. Enjoy an authentic safari experience in the savannah grassland in a park teeming with lions, zebras, gazelles, giraffes, rhinos, wildebeests, and buffalo. The only animals you won’t find here are elephants. It’s an incredible sight to watch the wildlife in their natural habitat with the city’s skyline as a backdrop.

In addition to Nairobi National Park, the city has many animal sanctuaries in the region that are open to the public. Many endangered species of animals like Sokoke cats, buffalos, ostriches, flamingos , hyenas, blue wildebeest, rhinos, hartebeest, waterbuck, common warthog, and black-backed jackal can be seen – both at the sanctuaries and on safari excursions. In addition to endangered animals, some sanctuaries house endangered plants.

2. Explore Maasai Market

Immerse yourself in Maasai culture at this incredible market that changes its location every day of the week. This is in keeping with the Maasai nomadic culture. This market is a must-visit as part of the Nairobi experience. Stroll through the market and experience vibrant colors in beadwork, woven shukas, and house ornaments all handcrafted by the Maasai people.

3. Visit Nairobi National Museum

Enjoyed even by non-museum fans, the Nairobi National Museum is an excellent showcase of Kenya’s history. Located within the city, the museum is a popular destination and easily accessible. Besides Kenya’s history, the museum also takes you through a journey of human ancestors. Explore the snake park within the museum and the beautiful botanical garden.

4. Visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage

Located right next to the Nairobi National Park, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of the animal sanctuaries that will be the highlight of your trip to Nairobi. Here you will find the most adorable baby elephants. Watch as their caretakers bring them out, feed them, and play with them. Your heart will melt at the bonds between these baby elephants and their caretakers.

5. Have breakfast at the Giraffe Manor

Can you imagine having breakfast while petting and feeding giraffes? The Giraffe Manor in Nairobi is home to the critically endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Founded in 1979, this sanctuary is one of Nairobi’s greatest gems. Meet and learn the names of the welcoming giraffes and take as many pictures as possible with these lovely creatures.

Kenyan Food You Gotta Try

Kenyan cuisine is inspired by over 44 tribes in the country of Kenya. Over time, these meals have made their way through the country and have become staples in households everywhere.

Foodies will find a haven in Nairobi as it offers dishes from just about every part of the world. From delectable and spicy Mexican dishes to creamy pasta, Kenyan dishes have made a name for themselves and serve as part and parcel of a Nairobi experience.

Sample Ugali , a meal made by adding maize flour to boiling water until it hardens. It pairs well with stews and vegetables, especially collard greens Kenyans love to call Sukuma Wiki (push the week). Ask for Pilau , a delicious traditional cinnamon, ginger, and garlic. Try chapati , a Kenyan flatbread inspired by the Indian naan. Vegans will love Kenyan cuisine for dishes such as githeri (a mix of maize and bean), mokimo (pounded potatoes, maize, and greens), matoke (cooked green bananas), and Maandazi , a sweet treat made with leavened flour.

Safety Tips

As with any big city, Nairobi has its fair share of security issues. Here are some tips to keep you safe as you visit:

  • Always keep your valuables close to you. Whether it’s your handbag, backpack, or wallet, make sure it is well-kept. There are pickpockets and tourists can make for an easy target.
  • Don’t walk alone at night – for the most part, Nairobi taxis are pretty safe. When you are out at night, it is safer in a taxi or any vehicle than walking alone. For more safety, you can use ride-hailing services like Uber or Bolt to navigate your way through the city.
  • Do a bit of research about Nairobi before arrival. This will familiarize you with the city, which should make your exploration much safer.
  • Stay connected and reachable at all times. Stay online and inform your loved ones of your itinerary and whereabouts every day. Buy a local SIM card for your phone to ensure you have a reliable connection throughout your stay.

A Bucket List City

Boasting as the only city in the world with a national park within its confines, Nairobi is a mix of raw untamed wilderness and vast urban sprawl. Whether you decide to spend your days in Nairobi exploring wildlife in the national park and sanctuaries or embark on a museum blitz around the city, your stay in Nairobi is bound to be unforgettable.

Conference planning co-chairs:.

Maher Nasser

Maher Nasser,  Director of Outreach in the United Nations Department of Global Communications

“The Department of Global Communications is very proud to be part of the planning and organizing of the 2024 UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi, the 69 th  since the Department’s creation and one that is receiving immense interest from civil society and other stakeholders, including from government representatives. This is the first of our civil society conferences to be held Africa and we are very grateful to the Government and civil society organizations in Kenya who have welcomed us with open arms and to our colleagues at the UN Office in Nairobi who will be hosting us in their beautiful campus sandwiched between Gigiri district and Karura Forest. As Co-Chair of the Planning Committee, my focus, and that of my colleagues in the Department, is to ensure the success of the Conference under the able leadership of Co-Chairs Carole Ageng’o and Nudhara Yusuf who are supported by a diverse and impressive civil society representatives from all around the world. The Conference comes at a critical point in the preparations for the Summit of the Future, a Summit that is billed as a major step towards a more inclusive and networked multilateralism providing multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow.”

Carole Ageng'o

Carole Ageng'o, Global Initiatives Lead & Africa Regional Representative at HelpAge International

"That civil society engagement remains a critical cog in the wheel of development, is well established. Greater collaboration between civil society organizations, governments and private sector can therefore not be more urgent at this time as we gear up for the Summit of the Future.  I look forward to a fruitful and effective partnership with my Co-Chair Nudhara Yusuf in putting together, and delivering (producing) a successful UNSSC to fully anchor civil society participation in the subsequent processes leading up to and including the Summit of the Future. Indeed, civil society participation will contribute greatly towards meeting the aspiration of “an international system – that is better prepared to manage the challenges we face now and, in the future, for the sake of all humanity and for future generations."

Nudhara Yusuf

Nudhara Yusuf, GGIN Executive Coordinator at Stimson Center

"The Summit of the Future, above all, is a call to rethink the way things have always been done. I believe, along with my Co-Chair Carole, and many other civil society leaders, that Nairobi could and should be a moment for civil society to show, not just call for, process innovation; how civil society engages with intergovernmental processes. Come May 2024, we should have a clearer picture of what a Pact for the Future is likely to constitute, while the Nairobi moment would look to meaningfully feed civil society perspectives into the process, we hope it will also be a place to start the critical multistakeholder conversation about how to land the Pact for the Future. We hope we can capitalize on the multistakeholder and intergenerational convening to build ImPACT Coalitions of Member States, civil society, and UN and other entities, who will help take forth key issue areas and reforms. We hope the Nairobi moment will be a civil society hosted space to move the international community from language to an action oriented networked and inclusive multilateralism.”

I did a search on this site and the replies seem to be at least 10 years old.

My tour operator sent me a link to get the Visas.

It appears Visas are only good for 90 days so I'll have to wait until about 2 1/2 months before the trip. Although I'm out more than 90 days I just went thru as far as I could go online to see if there were any issues. They ask for a selfie to be included. I didn't find any problems. Are there any?

Budget Luxury Masai Mara Safari in Kenya (in A Private JEEP with A FREE NIGHT at Nairobi Hotel)

My trip to Maasai Mara was one of the best experiences of my life. The landscape was stunning, with vast plains and rolling hills as far as the eye could see. The wildlife was incredible, with sightings of lions, elephants, giraffes, and many other species. The local Maasai people were also a highlight, with their rich cultural traditions and warm hospitality. I can't wait to go back to Maasai Mara and explore even more of this incredible destination.

Excellent and exciting tour to the Masai Mara. Great organisation and felt well looked after during the trip. James has done a fantastic job to ensure we get to see all animals which are around in the Masai Mara. The camp offered a nice place to chill, get a good night sleep and to strengthen yourself with delicious buffets for breakfast and dinner plus lunchboxes for the day. It's an experience not to miss and look forward to the next one.

Masai Mara Camping Safari Tour

Masai Mara Camping Safari

Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

We were delighted with our Mount Kenya 5 day package. John’s communication was brilliant from our first contact and he was happy to answer any questions. Our guide Michael and the wonderful team of porters were outstanding-experienced, friendly and professional, tailoring the hike to our needs. The food in particular was spectacular. Overall the excursion of a lifetime and great value too-we would not hesitate to recommend this hike.

3 Days Masai Mara Wildlife Safari Tour

3 Days Masai Mara Wildlife Safari

Many tourists who visit Masai Mara national park may be a bit snobby about their fascinating experience in this park, but I confess to a soft spot for Masai Mara. It is East Africa's most popular and best-known park, with easy access from Nairobi and plenty of cheap accommodation options. It was my first time to visit the park and I can still remember the thrill of seeing my first Lioness walking royally in the middle of the road with a queue of safari vehicles lined up waiting for her to move. The fact that we had the chance of seeing an elephant for the first time was really amazing. The cheaper and incredible services offered by the tour guides, combined with cheap accommodation in this place makes it seem as if the tourists here outnumber the animals. Our tour was so amazing that we even took photos of some animals and learnt much about wildlife. This place was really nice and worth our visit. I would recommend more tourists to visit this park and bare witnesses of incredible services.

3 Days, 2 Nights Masai Mara Group Joining Safari from Nairobi

This was a basic safari experience but the effort our guide Sammy put in to make it the best possible adventure he could for our small group made the trip very worthwhile. The visit to the Masai village was a highlight which I am pleased I took the chance to see. Our accommodation was not quite at the standard I had hoped for and the food on offer was sometimes inedible, but those are minor issues because the overall experience was very memorable.

Chris, our guide in Nairobi, was very knowledgable and always on time. We never had to worry about anything. He took us to Wilson airport for our flight to Masai Mara and stayed with us all the way through check in and was waiting for us on our return. Amazing service. Classic arranged for us to stay at the Mara Ngenche camp and I cant even begin to describe the experience there. Our safari guide, Francis, was amazing and the service at the camp, especially the restaurant, was among the best we have ever received in 5 star hotels around the world. Hug shout out to Classic for personalizing our trip and making us feel so special.

At least 70 people killed by flooding in Kenya as more rain is expected through the weekend

Kenyan Red Cross personnel and volunteers conduct search and rescue missions, around houses submerged by flood water in Machakos county, Kenya Monday, April 22, 2024. Heavy rains pounding different parts of Kenya have led to the deaths of at least 13 people and displaced some 15,000, the United Nations said, as forecasters warned more rains can be expected until June. Flooding and heavy rains in Kenya have killed at least 70 people since mid-March, a government spokesperson said Friday, twice as many as were reported earlier this week.

The East African country has seen weeks of heavy rains and severe flooding in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, as well as in the country’s western and central regions.

Kenya’s government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura on Friday refuted claims that hundreds of people have died in the ongoing flooding and said the official tally now stands at 70.

Five bodies were retrieved Friday from a river in Makueni county, east of the country, after a lorry they were traveling in was swept off a submerged bridge, local station Citizen TV reported. Another 11 were rescued.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said Friday at a news briefing that the government had set aside 4 billion Kenya shillings ($29 million) for emergency relief efforts, but did not provide further details.

More than 130,000 people are currently affected with thousands of houses washed away and others flooded. Some 64 public schools in the capital were flooded and had to shut down. Roads and bridges have been damaged or destroyed.

The Kenya Meteorological Department on Friday issued a heavy rainfall advisory for the weekend and urged residents to be vigilant.

Other East African countries have reported flooding with 155 people reported to have died in neighboring Tanzania and more than 200,000 people affected in Burundi.
