Khaliya Top Trek – The Best One-Day Trek in Munsyari

Planning for the Khaliya Top Trek? From altitude to weather, from itinerary to Zero Point – know everything about the trek!

About Khaliya Top

Khaliya Top is the most celebrated trek around Munsyari in the Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand. Perched on top of Khaliya Bugyal, Khaliya Top marks every trekker’s promised land. Considered an easy trek (grade-wise), the base, also known as Balanti Bend, is at a distance of 7 km from Munsyari. But…

Khaliya Top Trek

I was stuck in paradise. That’s how I wanted to start this piece: ‘I was stuck in paradise’. How does it feel to be ‘stuck’ in Munsyari, the most animated and breathtaking place in all of Uttarakhand? Despite being a budget traveller, I will forever be indebted to myself for taking the commercial taxi from Bageshwar on the cusp of lockdown.

Before the Khaliya Top Trek, I was living in Munsyari. The glass wall in my room facing the Panchachuli Peaks in the north took a magnetic toll on me. Watching the peaks every single day revising their first drafts with more colours, less colours; with or without the foggy curtains; with sunset or without it, grounded me in this enigmatic suburban town, Munsyari.

One can easily opt for shared jeeps from Munsyari to Khaliya Top Base. As an avid hiker, I took to the mercy of the roads on foot and hiked for one and a half hours to reach the base. For all the hiking enthusiasts out there: hike the stretch. It would be a nice way of warming yourself up for the 8-km uphill journey ahead.

On Khaliya Top

Situated at an elevation of 3500 meters and 8 km away from the base , the Khaliya Top trek moves upwards through an easily navigated trail amid the forest. There’re four marking points all the way up to the top: the base itself, the KMVN Rest House midway, and two more points after that (one of them being the ‘Zero Point’). The KMVN Rest House can be reached within two hours, depending on your pace. That first stretch of two hours would meander through a thick and opaque forest, home to various species of birds and animals. The bird callings would only aggravate with the aggravation of your pace.

Ghurar, yellow-fronted marten, Monal, Kakar (Barking Deer) are frequent. A man from the forest department, whom I met later at the rest house near Khaliya Top, told me that bears are in the spontaneous habit of making guest appearances near the rest house. On my way back, a herd of sheep with green horns slowed me down in the rain. Bharal, known as the blue sheep, is a common breed in the Upper Himalayas. The natives consider them mountain goats, but they are not really goats.

How Many Days For Khaliya Top Trek

On top of the top

Khaliya Top trek can be done in a single day if you have a decent walking pace and start early in the morning. Some people break the trek in two days, which is also plausible since there’s a rest house midway (after trekking for the first two hours). This is the resting spot before you hit the trail for another two hours.

Being a solo independent trekker, I could finish the trek in one day and return to Munsyari just before it got dark. It was a marked day for me, as I hiked for 30 km in a day; eight-plus-eight kilometers at Khaliya and seven-plus-seven kilometers from Munsyari to Khaliya Base and vice versa. But, if you choose to cherish the sunrise from the top, it’s more promising to spend the night at the rest house. The rooms cost Rs. 1200 (three-bedded rooms) and the tents cost Rs. 600. You can pitch your own tent in the valley near the rest house, but it is not allowed to camp at the top. Yet the guy from the forest department informed me that one can pitch tents at Khaliya Top with prior permission from the forest department’s office in Munsyari. The permit doesn’t cost a buck.

Khaliya Top Trek Itinerary

Khaliya TopTrek in Uttarakhand

Day 1: To Munsyari

If you are coming from Delhi or any other city for the trek, you need to reach Munsyari first. The distance from Delhi to Munsyari by road is 616 km, almost a 15-hour drive. The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport, from where you can easily reach Munsyari via local bus or taxi. If the train is your choice of transportation, there’re two railway stations nearby, Tanakpur and Kathgodam. From both stations, any vehicle can take you to Munsyari. Additionally, local buses run from Bageshwar to Munsyari at 9 am every morning. And you are good to go for Khaliya Top Trek!

Plenty of lodges and guest houses are available in Munsyari for overnight stays. Pandey Lodge (Rs. 300-1000, for different kinds of rooms), Sahara Homestay (Rs. 500), and Snow View Homestay (Rs. 500) are a few of the cheapest options. Also, if you want to stay for a month (like I did), the monthly rates vary from Rs. 5000-7000. I rented a room at Pandey Lodge for Rs. 4000 (due to lockdown, there was a significant drop in the prices) with a spectacular view of the Panchachuli Peaks both from the comfort of my room and the balcony.

Day 2: From Munsyari to Khaliya Top

The view from Khaliya Top

As mentioned earlier, the base for the Khaliya Top trek is 7 km away from Munsyari. The top is 8 km further. Shared jeeps will take you to the base from near the Munsyari bus station.

There’s no way you can miss the base, as it’s written ‘Khaliya Dwar’ (‘Khaliya Gate’) in big white letters on a curvy green gate on the main road. There’s generally a meager entry fee (Rs. 10-20). But I did the trek during the lockdown, the main office at the base was closed officially, so they let me pass without any charges.

The next two hours uphill is an unvarnished trail cruising through the condensed forest. There’s a well-marked path pointed towards one direction only, so there’s no need for a guide for Khaliya Top Trek. Sudden flashes of the Himalayan Peaks, mostly on your right, will keep startling you through the little spaces between pine and deodar trees. The more and more skywards you move (some bends literally feel like leading to the blue of the sky nearby), the more and more rhododendron trees will be discerned, especially while climbing the last stretch on the forestry path.

With the approach of the first valley, you will catch sight of the KMVN Rest House, and the open and outspread revelation of the peaks; Panchachuli, Nanda Kot, Rajrambha, and Hardeol Peaks. You may choose to rest for a while there and have a meal. This is the second resting point of Khaliya Top Trek (the first being the base itself).

The next hour is dotted with a receding jungle with more rhododendrons and the giant hiss of long grasses. Some branches have turned pink in places. This stretch is easy to climb and before your eyes can expect it, green valleys will wide open at the conclusion of the confined trail of oaks and pines. Tossed all around are fractal structures, the only distractions in the tracts of greenery.

Khaliya top trek

There you will find the third point of Khaliya Top Trek, a rock formation with the delicacies of religious stance. Trishuls, aromatic agarbattis, or a piece of red cloth hither and thither. From here on, the valley stretches up to another valley, then another. Lost in the patches of green, awe-struck by the expanse of the peaks all around you and silent in the silence of nature, you will know why you had to be there, at that moment, before it fleets away. Take your time exploring the valleys before heading towards the ‘Zero Point’. A few locals live in the depths of the valleys, on the coast of a thin clay lake and rocks and boulders. There are clouds explicitly touching the valleys. There’s secrecy among the bees. This is Khaliya Top.

The final ascent starts from here, towards the ulterior goal of climbing the ‘Zero Point’ of the trek. As you wander around the valleys, the dark hill would draw itself out around your eyesight. You can climb the hill from another side, which is more strenuous, but also more fun. You need to climb the boulders from the right side and the ‘Zero Point’ would be at your fist. Although I did not climb up to the exact point (the temperature dropped all of a sudden and there was thunder, and I had no raincoat or tent), I was only five-minutes’ climb away. At the sound of the thunder, I decided to climb down the final height and returned back to Munsyari. It started raining on my way back from the Khaliya Top Trek.

Best Time for Khaliya Top Trek

Me at the top

The best time to visit Khaliya Top is March to April if you want to embark on a snow-capped winter trek. Monsoon is never recommended for a high-altitude trek. But you can try out the month of May if the sky is clear (I did it in May). Also, September to December is a pleasant set of months to savour the trek.

Cost of Trekking To Khaliya Top

In my case, the cost for the Khaliya Top trek was zero, as I was already living in Munsyari and hiked all the way from there. In general, the probable means of costing falls on the shared jeep up to the base of the Khaliya Top trek and the stay at KMVN midway (if you choose to). The shared jeep won’t charge a huge amount; it’s around Rs. 100 per person. There’s an entry fee of Rs. 10-20 at the base. The KMVN stay for a three-bedded room would cost Rs. 1200, or a tent would cost you Rs. 600. If you choose to carry your own tent, you have to pay Rs. 300 at the base. And staying in Munsyari for one night would cost Rs. 500. Now you do the math.

The Top of the Valley

(You can refer to an article by TOI where the trekkers got stranded somewhere near Khaliya top!)

Moreover, Khaliya Top is an astounding one-day or two-day trek for beginners. This could be a nice warm-up for longer treks in Uttarakhand. Also recommended for beginners, along with the Khaliya Top Trek, is the Chopta-Chandrashilla Trek.

amazing scenes on Khaliya top trek Munsiyari

The mountains are calling and I must go !! In the recent few years, my adoration to the mountains particularly the Himalayan region has grown colossally. Whenever I return from a Himalayan trek, it feels as if I have left my heart and soul in the Himalayas . This exactly is what happened on yet another Himalayan Trek – The Khaliya Top Trek . The memories of hoisting the Indian flag at the topmost point are still so fresh!!

So where exactly is this Khaliya Top?? The trek to Khaliya Top starts from Balati Band which is located around 9 kms from the Munsiyari town . The Munsiyari town is situated at the base of The Great Himalayan Range at a height of the around 2200 meters in the Uttarakhand state of India.

Khaliya top, known to be the highest point in Munsiyari is situated an altitude of around 3500 meters from where one can enjoy spectacular views of the snow-clad Himalayan peaks including Panchachuli , Nanda Devi , Hardeol , Rajrambha and also the Milam valley . But is Khaliya Top really the highest point in Munsiyari?

Most trekkers who do this trek return after reaching Khaliya Top. However, there is another point named Zero Point higher up on the same trek about which very few know. It stands at an altitude of around 4000 meters from where one can enjoy a 360-degree Himalayan view, which isn’t possible from Khaliya Top. Thanks to a local guy who told us about Zero point, where he had hosted Indian Flag on 26 th January facing a challenging weather.

How to reach Munsiyari

Reaching Munsiyari is a bit challenging task. The nearest railway station to Munsiyari is Haldwani located around 285 kms from the town. Haldwani is well connected to other parts of the country via railways. From Haldwani, there is one direct bus every day (around 5:00 am) for Munsiyari which takes 13-14 hours to complete the journey.

How to reach Munsiyari from Delhi Kathgodam Nainital Almora Thal

If you miss the early bus, you can still reach Munsiyari in break journeys, the way I would ideally suggest you to reach Munsiyari. From Haldwani, catch a bus to Almora (90 kms-3 hours – 100 INR), and spend some time exploring the town. Catch a bus from Almora going to Bageshwar  (75 kms – 3 hours – 100 INR) on the same day and stay overnight at Bageshwar. From Bageshwar, you can take an early morning bus (5:00 – 5:30 am) to reach Udiyari (55 kms – 2 hours – 70 INR). Once you reach Udiyari, catch a shared taxi to Thal (20 kms – 50 INR) from where you will get another shared taxi to Munsiyari (70 kms -3 hours -150 INR).

Getting around Munsiyari

The town is small and most points of interest can be explored by walking around. A walk till the Nanda Devi temple from the town center, amidst the snow-capped Himalayan Mountains, is a moment to cheer about. For reaching the Khaliya top trail start point (9 kms from town Centre), you may ask for a lift from a shared taxi which is going towards the same route. If the seats are full, be ready to stand at the back side of Jeep, like we did.

My Journey to Munsiyari and Khaliya Top

After exploring the beautiful town of Almora, next on my list was Munsiyari. I along with my friend Aditya went to the bus stand at Almora and enquired for a bus to Munsiyari. We were informed that there is just one direct bus which had already left. So to reach Munsiyari, either we had to wait for the next day or reach in break journeys and we chose the later.

on way to Munsiyari

On way to Munsiyari

Nowadays, I prefer break journeys over the long ones as they are comparatively less tiring and also gives me an opportunity to explore the small towns and villages’ en-route. From Almora, we had to change transports at Bageshwar, Udiyari, and Thal in order to reach Munsiyari. All these small towns had something that could delight its visitor. It can be the culture, the local food or be the spots of tourist interest.

Splendid views at Munsiyari

After all the breaks and pit stops, we finally made it to Munsiyari. It is the last main town which is well connected to the other parts of Uttarakhand. The town offers stunning views of the snow-capped Himalayan ranges especially the Panchachuli peak. Munsiyari is quite popular among the altitude trekkers who are planning to do long treks like Ralam , Milam , Pindari , Kafni and Namik glacier treks.

As we were for a day and a half in Munsiyari, we decided to explore the town for the remaining part of the day and do the Khaliya top trek the next day. A local guy told us to visit the Tribal Museum first, as it was about to be closed in an hour or so. Strolling on the peaceful roads of the town with beautiful surrounding was an adventure in itself.

We ended our day with a visit to Nanda Devi Temple crowned by the stunning Himalayan peaks. The next day we started a bit early morning so that we can enjoy the sunrise from somewhere on the Khaliya Top trek. The entire route till the top was simply breathtaking with views of the Great Himalayan Range from every corner.

We started around 4:30 am from the hotel. Since the start point (Balati Band) is around 9 kms from the main town, one can use hitchhiking to reach the band. But you need to be lucky to get a lift as taxis passing by are mostly full. We weren’t lucky but we somehow managed to stand at the backside of the taxi, it’s thrilling but risky though.

The reason to reach so early to the base was, we wanted to enjoy the sunrise from some point further up the mountain and yes we were blessed with a splendid view of the sun slowly climbing up the mountains. On the initial climb, one can see numerous Rhododendron trees covered with little snow.

Almost on the halfway, there is privately owned Alpine Resort where you can opt to stay. Eating Maggi and having tea at this resort amidst the huge mountains in the backdrop is a wonderful feeling.

The guy who served us told that there is yet another point higher than the Khaliya top (around 1-hour trek) where he had hosted India flag on 26th January. The moment he told us about that point (Zero point), we decided that we would try our best to go there.

The thickness of the snow layer kept on increasing as we were moving higher and higher and the views kept on getting more amazing. The feeling that we were about to experience by waving the flag at the topmost point kept us encouraging to reach the top.

What a natural slide!!!

After spending an hour or so at the top, we began with the descent. It was almost 5:00 pm and we could see that the sun had already started setting. The sunrays falling on the Himalayan range were giving it an orangish color. The views were so breathtaking that we were in no mood to continue with the descent, even knowing the fact that we may end up descending in the dark.

Panchachuli peaks glowing due to sunset

We lost the correct trail in the dark and were stranded in the deep jungles. The GPS came to our rescue and somehow we managed to reach the base point of the trek after falling few times in the bushes. From there, we again hitchhiked in the exact same manner we did in the morning to reach the main town. The Khaliya trek top was definitely a lifetime experience for me with so much happening in just a span of a day.

An easy 3 kms trek from the town center will take you to Nanda Devi Temple.  The views on the entire route to reach here are just incredible. It is a white temple dedicated to Goddess Nanda. The temple is located in a wide-open meadow which provides a 180-degree view of the Himalayan range. The sunset view from this temple is outstanding.

Apart from these places, one can also visit Maheshwari Kund, Balanti Potato Farm, Darkot Village, Thamri Kund, Kalamuni Top, Madkot, and Birthi Falls. As we were short of time, we couldn’t visit these places.

Stay options in Munsiyari

There are plenty of hotels located near the bus stand in Munsiyari. I visited the town in the month of February, which was completely an off-season. Almost all the hotels were offering flat 50% discount. We stayed at the Hotel Bala Paradise. Charges for a room/night were INR 700 after almost 60-70% discount. The view of the Himalayan range from the room balcony and the terrace was splendid. You may also find hotels cheaper than this.

Best time to visit Munsiyari

I am really getting bored while filling out these details. It’s almost the same story for all the places in Uttarakhand. Anyways for my new readers, I should provide these details. If you want to experience trekking in the snow, plan your trip to Munsiyari in months of December to March. If you are looking to escape scorching heat prevalent in India in months of April to June, a visit to Munsiyari can be a perfect option. I would suggest avoiding monsoon season as chances of landslides are high.

Birthi Falls Munsiyari

I was so engaged in exploring the whole town that I didn’t realize how quickly the time had passed. It was time to put an end to yet another Himalayan trek. Thank you Munsiyari for such lovely memories!!!

Trekking to the snow-covered alpine meadow of Khaliya Top is an experience that tourists shouldn’t miss in Munsiyari. The easy trek can be done in a day. It begins from Balati Bend, 12km from Munsiyari. Even though it’s a moderate trek, you must be prepared for some steep climbs on your way up. The trek meanders through thick forests and offers visual delights all along in the form of beautiful mountain animals and birds. The prime attraction of the trek is the enchanting views of the Panchachuli, Nanda Devi, Hardeol, Nandakot, and Rajrambha peaks that one gets to enjoy. From the summit, you can also trek for another kilometre and visit Zero Point, for a 360-degree view of the Himalayas.

Nanda Devi Basecamp Trek

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Himanshu Oli (@olihimanshu)

The trek to  Nanda Devi Base Camp, or the Nanda Devi East Base Camp trek, as it is popularly known, is extremely difficult. The trek can be accomplished in 9 to 12 days and must be done with a guide. The best part about the trek is the number of snow-clad Himalayan peaks it introduces you to. The trek begins at Munsiyari and takes you through Lilam, Bugdiyar, Rilkot, Martoli, Narspanpati, and Bittalgwaar. You can take a rest day at Martoli and explore the deserted old village. The trek includes grassy knolls, rugged and rocky trails, boulder-strewn landmasses and even slippery trails. The meadows of Narspanpati are a major highlight of the trek and offer stunning views of the Himalayas.

Thamri Kund Trek

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by DIDIHAT OFFICIAL | DIDIHATWASI (@didihatofficial)

The Thamri Kund Trek is a short and easy trek that starts 10km from Munsiyari. A short drive from Munsiyari will take you to the main gate from where the trek begins. From here, it’s only a 3km trek, which can easily be done in an hour. The trail is narrow at the beginning and requires you to climb uneven stone stairs for a large part of the trek. Let your eyes soak in the scenic beauty as you trek under the clear blue skies. The Thamri Kund is a gorgeous natural water body nestled amidst lush trees. During winters, the area is covered in a thick blanket of snow. On your way back to Munsiyari, you can also stop at several vantage points to marvel at the sun-kissed Panchachuli peaks.

Milam Glacier Trek

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Sonu Speedstrikers (@sonuspeedstrikers)

One of the most popular treks in Uttarakhand, the Milam Glacier trek takes you through the spectacular Johar valley. The Milam Glacier is positioned on the south-facing slope of the  Himalayas  and originates from the Kohli and Trishul peaks. The trek to the glacier begins from Bog Udyar, a short drive from Munsiyari. It takes 14-15 days to complete the trek, which also includes acclimatising at different altitudes. You will pass through gorgeous solitary hilly hamlets, lush alpine meadows and meet the warm and hospitable Shaukas who used to be traders on the Indo-Tibet route. The itinerary for the trek is as follows: Lilam-Bogudiyar-Rilkot-Martoli-Milam village-Milam Glacier. The best time to do the trek is from May to October.

Ralam Glacier Trek

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by 𝗜𝗡𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗦𝗬𝗔𝗥𝗜 𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟 (@in_munsyari)

The trek to Ralam Glacier is a challenging trek that takes around 10 days. The trek starts 50km from Munsiyari and takes you through picturesque villages. The mesmerising Ralam Glacier is perched at an elevation of 4000 metres above sea level near Ralam Dhura at Ralam Khal. The glacier is a part of the Great Himalayan Belt and is divided into two parts- Upper Ralam and Lower Ralam. Trekkers start from Munsiyari and trek to Paton village via Jimighat and Lilam villages. The walk from Paton to Lingurani campsite is strenuous. From Lingurani, one has to trek to Killadum, which offers rewarding views of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Trishuli, Hardeol, and Brijgang peaks. The last stretch from Killadum to Ralam village is difficult, but you can unwind at the campsite at Ralam. From here, it’s a three to four- hour ascent to the glacier.

Namik Glacier Trek

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by DanuAdventure (@danuadventure)

This offbeat trek falls under the easy to moderate category and can be done in ten days. The months of May, June, September, and October are the most ideal for the Namik Glacier trek. Starting from Munsiyari, it takes you through Senar Gad meadows, Dhaldauk, Sudamkhan, Hiramani Glacier, Namik Glacier, Sudamkhan, Namik village, Gogina, and Liti. Namik Glacier is the origin of the Ramganga river. During the trek, you will witness the sheer majesty of the Panchachuli, Kafni, Pindari, and Sundarunga glaciers. A large part of the  trek  involves walking through beautiful lush meadows.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
