Nouveauté ! depuis le mois d’octobre, deux visites vous sont proposées :

Cette visite vous permet de découvrir en détails l’intérieur de la Tour. Avec votre guide, vous arpenterez les 5 étages du monument, découvrirez ses multiples pièces et points de vue. Vous accèderez au chemin de ronde au sommet de la Tour. Vous retracerez l’histoire du donjon de sa construction à aujourd’hui.

Cette visite se concentre sur les aspects militaires de l’ancienne forteresse de Grand-Fougeray, en la replaçant dans le contexte politique et sociétal des XIII e et XIV e siècles.

Vous découvrirez comment étaient conçus les châteaux forts de l’époque, et quelles techniques étaient employées pour les attaquer ou les défendre. Grâce à des illustrations, à une maquette de l’ancien château et aux éléments défensifs conservés de la Tour, vous pourrez vous mettre dans la peau d’un soldat de l’époque et imaginer protéger le château.

Cette visite est idéale si vous connaissez déjà le monument et souhaitez le redécouvrir sous un autre angle. Plus complexe que la visite classique, elle peut être trop compliquée pour les jeunes enfants (moins de 6-7 ans).

“Lovely Surroundings” Review of La Tour Duguesclin

Lousy weather for motorway driving, we went the pretty route". Got a bit lost from Caen to home and ended up at lunchtime in Grand Fougeray. Circled the town to come across La Tour. What a delightful find. Even in the drizzle, it looked a lovely spot. The food was excellent, albeit apple orientated (this is apple country!), friendly service and reasonably priced. The one downer was there was very little heat and it was pithering cold outside. Had to keep my jacket on, as did a number of other diners. However, well worth a visit and we recommend it.

Sadly the food is mediocre, and our steaks were overcooked, we asked for 'a point' and they were 'bien cuit', when we said this we were told that was how it was. my Salmon was dry, and this was the 24 euro menu, The menu has not changed in ten years.

Very good food and a lovely outlook to the ancient tower some 30-40 metres away from our terrace location. Very warm welcome and lovely gardens to walk with the dog after. Absolutely recommend what was an excellent lunch.

Went with high expectations bearing in mind the splendid venue.I asked for green salad..the worst I've ever had. Main course was duck...tough, overcooked and the vegetable accompainments were tastless. A saving grace was the desert and the service. My two guests had similar experiences. Maybe a bad day in the kitchen but I recommend the management investigates these very obvious shortfalls.

They were very hard to pin down to make a reservation but we were finally able to visit. The food was very nice if a little stayed. The service was polite and efficient. But thank god my husband speaks French as they spoke no English.... A little austere in the restaurant itself due to its age more than anything. More

As you approach the restaurant within its own grounds you can't help but appreciate the surroundings and the sight of the tower in front of the restaurant's windows. You can be forgiven for thinking you may well be in for a treat and that you... made the right choice to stop here for lunch. They say all good things must come to an end and they certainly did once you took a table in this establishment. Firstly, it took absolutely ages for someone to come and take the order, my partner wondered whether the Marie Celeste crew ended up here and were trapped within the walls. After the order was taken another twenty minutes or so passed before the waitress arrived with the canapes and the wine that we ordered. The canapes for want of a better word were two insipid pieces of bread or mangled blini type offerings with what appeared to be a tiny dried slice of duck with chopped kidneys that had a disgusting smell of urine that clearly had not been washed through. We didn't dare touch it, the food that eventually followed was supposed to have been the fresh fish of the day (Sea Bass) I'm not a fisherman but you had to be in a coma not to have noticed it was far from fresh, I was surprised it didn't walk out of the restaurant to the morgue. For me, the food was well below standard, probably one of the most disappointing lunches I have ever had. Sorry, but not for me. More

5 km - 1h15 - Facile - Piéton, vélo - Départ au parking du parc de la Tour Duguesclin Une petite balade à réaliser en famille un dimanche après-midi pour se détendre en découvrant l'arboretum du Parc de la Tour Duguesclin. Peu de relief, des sentiers en sous-bois ou des chemins empierrés, une courte distance... autant d'arguments pour partir se promener sans trop se fatiguer.

La Tour Duguesclin

Au XIIIe siècle se situait au Grand-Fougeray un ensemble de fortifications érigées, comme le château de Fougères ou celui de Vitré, pour protéger les marches du duchés de Bretagne. De cet ensemble de 9 tours subsiste uniquement le donjon construit par Jean II de Rieux. Cette tour circulaire, de 30 mètres de haut et 16 mètres de diamètre, est appelée  la Tour Duguesclin.

Le Parc de la Tour Dugesclin

Sur environ 7 hectares, ce parc combine à la fois des espaces verts u bord de l’étang, des massifs boisés et un arboretum. Ce dernier est un mélange d’espèces locales tels que le hêtre, le cormier, le châtaignier et d’essences plus exotiques plantées par le Loquet de Granville, armateur à Saint-Malo en 1749.

Elle provienne pour la plupart de l’Amérique du Nord (sapin de douglas, tuya…) et pour quelques unes d’Afrique (cèdre de l’Atlas) ou d’Asie (ailante, cryptoméria du Japon). Parmi les arbres remarquables du Parc, ne manquez pas le hêtre au feuilles pourpres.

Le village de la Brûlonnais

Le village possède l’une des plus vieilles maisons de Grand-Fougeray. On la retrouve dans l’alignement de logis à gauche. Elle est repérable grâce à son linteau en schiste bleu qui surmonte la fenêtre avec des barreaux et porte l’inscription  » 1658 BA PA Jean Fosse ».

Un peu d’histoire…

Le nom de la Tour lui vient d’une ruse de Duguesclin, menée en 1350 lors de la guerre de succession du duché de Bretagne. A la mort du duc Jean III de Bretagne, deux camps s’opposent pour la succession : Charles de Blois, soutenu par les français et Jean de Montfort, soutenu par les anglais. Le château est alors en possession des partisans de jean de Montfort. Bertrand Duguesclin, soutenant le camp français, décide de récupérer la tour aux mains des anglais. Avec ses compagnons, déguisés en bûcherons et les armes cachées dans les fagots, Bertrand Duguesclin assiège la tour et la reprend aux anglais.

“Lovely Surroundings” Review of La Tour Duguesclin

Lousy weather for motorway driving, we went the pretty route". Got a bit lost from Caen to home and ended up at lunchtime in Grand Fougeray. Circled the town to come across La Tour. What a delightful find. Even in the drizzle, it looked a lovely spot. The food was excellent, albeit apple orientated (this is apple country!), friendly service and reasonably priced. The one downer was there was very little heat and it was pithering cold outside. Had to keep my jacket on, as did a number of other diners. However, well worth a visit and we recommend it.

Sadly the food is mediocre, and our steaks were overcooked, we asked for 'a point' and they were 'bien cuit', when we said this we were told that was how it was. my Salmon was dry, and this was the 24 euro menu, The menu has not changed in ten years.

Very good food and a lovely outlook to the ancient tower some 30-40 metres away from our terrace location. Very warm welcome and lovely gardens to walk with the dog after. Absolutely recommend what was an excellent lunch.

Went with high expectations bearing in mind the splendid venue.I asked for green salad..the worst I've ever had. Main course was duck...tough, overcooked and the vegetable accompainments were tastless. A saving grace was the desert and the service. My two guests had similar experiences. Maybe a bad day in the kitchen but I recommend the management investigates these very obvious shortfalls.
