Surprise! Dracula Thriller The Last Voyage of the Demeter Is Streaming Now on Digital

Bring Dracula's throat-ripping pleasure cruise into the comfort of your own home!

(from left) Nosferatu (Javier Botet) and Clemens (Corey Hawkins) in The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)

The time has come to bring Count Dracula's throat-ripping pleasure cruise into the comfort of your own home. Universal Pictures announced on X, formerly Twitter, that The Last Voyage of the Demeter is now available to rent and/or purchase on digital platforms.

Praised by horror icons like Stephen King and Guillermo del Toro , the period thriller builds upon a single chapter in Bram Stoker's vampiric source material by explaining what happened on Drac's voyage from Eastern Europe to London, circa 1897.

Deprived of iron-rich sustenance, the famous bloodsucker (played by genre vet Javier Botet ) begins to pick off the titular vessel's crew members in the most gruesome fashions. Once the survivors begin to realize what's going on, they take a page out of the Nostromo playbook and hatch a plan to destroy the beast. But are they too late to stop this ultimate evil from infecting the shores of England?

"I didn’t want him to be sexy or a suave kind of version of Dracula at all," explained director André Øvredal ( The Autopsy of Jane Doe ,  Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark ) ahead of the movie's wide theatrical release earlier this month. "I wanted him to be somebody who’s lived in this horrific lifestyle. And he’s frail, he’s really desperate for blood. When he loses his blood supply, he’s in a desperate situation until he’s able to kill the first crew member. I wanted to try to tell that story and how, as he gains power, he’s then able to gain the power to recreate the demon within him. Have it manifest. And that demon needed to be part bat, part demon."

Take a journey across the high seas and discover the mysteries surrounding the new Dracula movie, The Last Voyage of the Demeter . With the movie set to reimagine Bram Stoker’s Transylvanian Nobleman, fans can expect something quite different from Gary Oldman’s portrayal of the character back in 1992. Here’s what we know.

What is The Last Voyage of the Demeter based on?

Unlike previous versions of the character in movies, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is based on a single chapter of the book Dracula by the writer Bram Stoker.  In order to tell an interesting, limited story that depicts Dracula as a wild creature, the movie only adapts Chapter Seven "The Captain’s Log". This unusual approach looks set to be an origin story for the famous villain, one that brings him back as a terrifying adversary that strikes fear into the hearts of people. In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, the filmmaker Andre Ovredal stated “ I always wanted to be very close to what the original text was, and I tried to embrace that as much as possible when making the movie. ”

Who’s making the movie?

Bringing Dracula into the modern era is not an easy task and the crew making the movie all have a wide range of experience. The Last Voyage of the Demeter is directed by Norwegian filmmaker Andre Ovredal, who fans might recognize as the director behind Troll Hunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe . He has often leaned toward elements of myth and fantasy in his movies while staying rooted in the horror genre. Most notably, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark , a supernatural horror movie that saw him collaborate with legendary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro to create a critically and commercially successful genre movie.

Who else is in the crew?

Working on the adaptation are screenwriters Bragi Schut Jr. and Zak Olkewicz. Schut Jr. developed an interest in the story when working at a model shop and coming across a miniature of the Demeter used in the 1992 movie  Bram Stoker’s Dracula . After this interaction, Schut Jr. began writing a script based on The Captain’s Log. Zak Olkewicz wrote the screenplay for the action-packed adventure Bullet Train as well as the movie Fear Street: Part Two – 1978 .

Shooting the movie on board the ship (and often in the dark) is Academy Award nominee Tom Stern who handles the cinematography for the movie. A frequent collaborator of Clint Eastwood, Stern has worked on movies such as American Sniper , Sully , and Invictus . A horror movie lives and dies by the sound design and score, and classically trained pianist and composer Bear McCreary is on board The Last Voyage of the Demeter. He has worked on television shows such as Snowpiercer , Black Mirror , and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power . He has also worked on movies such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters and We Have a Ghost .

Who’s playing Dracula?

The Dracula of The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a feral and fearsome vampire and bringing him to life is the Spanish actor Javier Botet. Botet has a history of portraying creatures in movies having done so in The Mummy and Slender Man – often cast because of his incredible height and hyperlaxity. He was a motion capture movement artist on the movie Alien: Covenant and has worked with Andre Ovredall on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark .

Who else stars in the movie?

Actor Corey Hawkins portrays the lead character Clemens, a doctor on board the Demeter. Hawkins has starred in movies such as Kong: Skull Island , BlacKkKlansman , and The Tragedy of Macbeth . Also on board the Demeter is the unfortunate stowaway Anna played by Aisling Franciosi. The Irish actress starred as Lyanna Stark in Game of Thrones as well as movies The Unforgivable and God’s Creatures . Liam Cunningham stars as Captain Elliot in a Game of Thrones reunion, fans will remember him as the lovable character Davos. David Dastmalchian also stars in the movie as Wojcheck, the first mate of the ship. The wider cast includes Woody Norman, Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Chris Walley, and Sally Reeve among others.

What is The Last Voyage of the Demeter about?

The official synopsis released by Universal Pictures:

‘ Strange and horrifying events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage from Transylvania to London, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship: a legendary vampire known as Dracula. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew. ”

Filmmaker Andre Ovredall likened the movie to the legendary slow-burning sci-fi thriller Alien . In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, he said: “ It’s a big journey across Europe from Varna to the English coast, and it’s a haunted house at sea, like Alien on the Ocean in 1897, but with Dracula as the Alien .”

Is The Last Voyage of the Demeter R-rated?

To the delight of horror fans everywhere, due to the depictions of “bloody violence”, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is indeed R-rated. This comes as no surprise, even this year’s comic portrayal of Dracula in the movie Renfield received an R-rating as did Francis Ford Coppola’s campy Bram Stoker’s Dracula .

What to watch before The Last Voyage of the Demeter?

While every portrayal of the character offers something different, these three movies give you a good overview of the character in recent history. Of course, go back to 1922’s Nosferatu or even the 1931 Dracula if you want to see the classical roots of the character on screen, but these three are our picks for a basic Dracula education:

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

This classic portrayal features big-name actors such as Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, and Keanu Reeves. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the movie is one of the most iconic Dracula movies ever made with particular praise reserved for the production and set design as well as Gary Oldman’s performance in the titular role.

Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)

Klaus Kinski brings the famous vampire to life with director Werner Herzog attempting to remake the legendary 1922 movie, Nosferatu. This sympathetic portrayal of the character is Herzog attempting to reach into the philosophical nature of the character, he says “ Nosferatu is not a monster, but an ambivalent, masterful force of change. ”

Renfield (2023)

The most recent Dracula on screen has been Nicolas Cage in the horror-comedy Renfield. This portrayal is not a direct adaptation of Bram Stoker’s book and yet offers a light-hearted pop Dracula for audiences to feast on. Based on his relationship with his underling, Renfield, the movie gives Dracula the full comic treatment that major adaptations have mostly just hinted at.

When is the movie being released?

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is out in theaters on August 11, 2023. You can keep track of the movie here on JustWatch to find out when it is available on streaming and which streaming platform will house the terrifying origin story of Dracula.

However, when it came to box office performance, the movie didn’t break even, grossing only $21.7 million worldwide against a budget of $45 million. Critically, it also received mixed reviews by critics but fans were more enthusiastic about it.

‘The Last Voyage of Demeter,’ a period horror film to fans of the genre

Starring Corey Hawkins , Liam Cunningham, Aisling Franciosi, David Dastmalchian, Woody Norman and Javier Botet as Dracula, the film is set in 1897 and follows the crew of the merchant ship named Demeter as they sail from Transylvania to London, while Dracula is stalking them.

The story follows a typical slasher film formula, with the legendary vampire killing the crew members one by one. However, to add to the tension, Dracula’s full image isn’t shown at the beginning, but it’s slowly revealed throughout the film.

Øvredal told Collider that he wanted to work “with the dramatic effect of discovery,” and in this case the biggest discovery in the movie is the “evolution of the creature,” so they kept it in the “shadows” in the beginning of the film.

According to the critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes, in which the film holds a 49% score on the platform, the movie is definitely a fresh take on the character but the execution wasn’t that interesting. Meanwhile, the audience thinks the film is a “ solidly scary Dracula movie.”

Where to Watch Every ALIEN Movie On ALIEN Day

ALIEN (1979)

April 26 is officially Alien Day. Why? Because the planet where settlers ran afoul of the Xenomorphs is LV 426.  (4/26, get it?) Perfection. It is the best day to watch as many of the Alien franchise films as you can in preparation for the release of the newest film in the series later this year, Alien: Romulus.  Even more exciting, you can watch the original Alien in theatres starting today for its 45th anniversary.

Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Álvarez directed the upcoming film, which is a standalone movie in the series. Álvarez is best known for the 2013 reimagining of Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe.  The trailer for the new film has already been released, and it is a pulse-pounding minute of relentless and disturbing action.

Here’s where you can watch every single Alien movie today or any day this month that you feel like being really scared.

Alien (1979)

last voyage of the demeter watch

Alien is the masterful classic by director Ridley Scott, which started the franchise, and we encourage you to watch it if you haven't already. Even though the film is 45 years old, it retains its cold power to shock and scare the audience.

Because this year marks the film's 45th anniversary, you have more than one option to watch Alien , and one of them is particularly cool. Starting today, you can watch Alien  in theatres for about a week. What makes this screening even more special is that before the movie starts, you will be able to watch an exclusive discussion between director Ridley Scott and Fede Álvarez, director of the upcoming Alien: Romulus .

You can get tickets for the theatrical re-release here .

If you need further incentive, the film was written by genre legend Dan O'Bannon ( Dead and Buried, The Return of the Living Dead, Lifeforce, and Total Recall ) and stars an incredible cast, including Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto as the crew of the Nostromo.

Alien  is now streaming on Hulu . Check out some  Alien behind-the-scenes goodies from the Fango vault.

Aliens (1986)

last voyage of the demeter watch

James Cameron's rip-roaring action horror movie sequel to Alien is Aliens.  In choosing Cameron and throwing the rule book of sequels out the window, we got a film that expands upon the mythos of the first film and adds a larger body count without sacrificing the dread of the first movie.

Who are you going to call when you've got a Xenomorph problem? If your answer is the Space Marines, you'd better make sure they get back up from Ellen Ripley and Newt. Aliens c ontinues the series' excellent casting; the  film stars a cadre of character actors who give iconic performances: Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Carrie Henn, Bill Paxton, William Hope, Al Matthews, Jenette Goldstein, and Mark Rolston.

Aliens is now streaming on Max and Starz .

Alien 3  (1992)

last voyage of the demeter watch

Following the tradition set by Aliens , the director of Alien 3 was chosen because of his reputation as a bold visual stylist who would take the film in a new direction. Written by David Giler, Walter Hill, and Larry Ferguson, the film starts in the aftermath of Aliens , as Ripley returns from LV-426 and crash-lands on the maximum-security prison Fiorina 161, where she discovers that she has unwittingly brought along an unwelcome visitor.

While the film was not received well at the time, Fincher has gained a reputation as a renowned film director in the decades since Alien 3's release, so it would be unwise to dismiss the film without watching it yourself. Downbeat and grimy, it honors the tradition of the franchise by taking its own path.

This third sequel stars yet another amazing cast with Sigourney Weaver, Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance, Lance Henriksen, and Pete Postlethwaite.

Alien 3  is now streaming on Hulu and Starz . Read how the  Alien 3 novelization makes slightly more sense than the final cut.

Alien Resurrection  (1997)

last voyage of the demeter watch

Yet another branching of the franchise with another uniquely talented director is Alien Resurrection. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the French auteur responsible for Delicatessen  and The City of Lost Children,  the film convinced the producers that Jeunet was the right director for Alien Resurrection.

The film takes a large time jump into the future in which, two centuries after her death, a powerful human/alien hybrid clone of Ellen Ripley aids a crew of space pirates in stopping the aliens from reaching Earth. It stars Sigourney Weaver as a very different version of Ripley known as Ripley 8, Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman, Dan Hedaya, J. E. Freeman, Brad Dourif, and Michael Wincott.

Alien Resurrection  is now streaming on Hulu and Starz .

Prometheus (2012)

last voyage of the demeter watch

Prometheus  is Ridley Scott's triumphant return to the franchise. It is a prequel set at the end of the 21st century that explores the origins of the Xenomorphs and how they first became entangled in humans' lives. It also explores creation myths, the lies that sentient beings tell to themselves to justify their actions, and the fear of death.

It was written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof and starred a remarkable cast, including Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron. Scott uses a different style from the cold, deep space fright of Alien  and makes Prometheus  more earthlike and warm in its imagery but inhuman and strange in its story.

Prometheus is now streaming on Hulu and Tubi .

Alien: Covenant (2017)

last voyage of the demeter watch

As the sequel to  Prometheus,  Alien: Covenant is again directed by Ridley Scott and expands upon the mythology of the prequels. Written by John Logan (Penny Dreadful, Gladiator) and Dante Harper, it tells the story of a colony ship crew bound for a remote planet who discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination and must attempt a harrowing escape.

The brilliance of the casting in this series continues in the prequels, as Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, and Amy Seimetz.

Alien: Covenant  is now streaming on TNT and TBS .

Alien vs. Predator (2004)

last voyage of the demeter watch

As a bonus, and because these two films are part of the Alien canon and franchise, may we present Alien vs. Predator  as a part of your  Alien  marathon? The film is a crossover and is a lot of gory fun, especially if you have ever wondered who would win if there was a war between Xenomorphs and Yajuta, aka Predators.

Alien vs. Predator , or AVP , also sets the action on Earth, which is an extra twist.  As the film's tagline states, whoever wins, we lose. The film was written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who is most famous for Event Horizon and the Resident Evil franchise. It stars Sanaa Lathan, Raoul Bova, Lance Henriksen, and Ewen Bremner.

Alien vs. Predator is now streaming on Hulu and Starz .

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem  (2007)

last voyage of the demeter watch

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem was directed by The Brothers Strause, and there is something gleefully nasty about the movie, in a good way.  It is the sequel to Alien vs Predator and continues the story as warring Alien and Predator races descend on a rural Colorado town, where unsuspecting residents must band together for any chance of survival. It actually crosses the kid barrier, and even a small cute child isn't safe from the Xenomorphs, which gives the movie a charm of its own.

The film stars Steven Pasquale, Reiko Aylesworth, John Ortiz, Johnny Lewis, and Ariel Gade and gets down to business, horror business, almost from the first frame.

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem is now streaming on Hulu and Starz .

Abigail Suggests Vampires Are No Longer Good Box Office Bets

Abigail movie Alisha Weir

This past weekend was, without a doubt, one that several studios and pretty much every movie theater around the country (and much of the world for that matter) would like to forget. Several new releases hit theaters, including Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," as well as Crunchroll's latest anime film, "Spy x Family Code: White." It was, however, Universal Pictures' horror/comedy "Abigail" that was the most high-profile release of the bunch. While the film did perform better than the other debuts, it fell well short of expectations and further cemented a point that has been quietly lingering for some time: Vampires are not generally good for business these days.

"Abigail" opened to just $10.2 million, coming in second place over the weekend to Alex Garland's "Civil War," which pulled in $11.1 million in its second frame. Overall, it was one of the worst weekends at the box office in 2024 to date . There was little, if anything, to celebrate. The film had been tracking for a $12 million opening on the low end , and the only good news for the studio is that the movie came with a relatively modest $28 million production budget (before marketing). So, in the long run, this one should make its money back, but it's sure as heck not going to be an outright hit. The film was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, aka Radio Silence, the filmmaking collective behind "Ready or Not" and last year's "Scream VI."

For Universal, it was especially rough. This is the third time in a year that they've had to watch a vampire movie underperform in theaters. Both "Renfield" and "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" flopped at the box office last year . What stings this time is that "Abigail" was received well by critics and even earned a solid B CinemaScore. But it didn't matter in the end.

It's been a while since vampires were a hit at the box office

The larger lesson for Hollywood here is that vampire movies just aren't clicking with the moviegoing masses, and they frankly haven't been for some time. "Twilight" becoming a $3.3 billion franchise is very much the exception, not the rule. For whatever reason, vampires as out-and-out horror fodder just aren't bringing out audiences in meaningful numbers. As one recent example, 2022's "The Invitation" ($33 million box office/$10 million budget) benefited from a small budget and a lack of competition, but its overall gross was still relatively small.

More often, we're looking at stuff like "Morbius" ($167 million box office/$75 million budget) , that couldn't even leverage Marvel's good name to garner success. Save for the "Hotel Transylvania" franchise, which is very much benefiting from being family-friendly, it's been a while since a vampire movie hit it big at the box office. From what I can tell, we have to go back to "Underworld: Blood Wars" ($81 million box office/$35 million budget) in 2017, and that was part of an already-successful franchise.

Even going back a full decade to 2014's "Dracula Untold" ($200 million box office/$70 million budget), the ceiling was relatively low on the biggest scale in the pre-pandemic era. The stuff that worked were indies such as "What We Do in the Shadows" or "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night," which were both very small movies that ended up finding their audience over time. In the pandemic era? Vampire movies are truly having a hard time breaking through.

I'm not saying nobody should make vampire movies. We've got Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu" coming later this year , and if all goes well, that may break the cycle. But it certainly needs to be understood that the appetite for these movies, generally speaking, is limited. Why exactly that is? It's tough to say, but the numbers don't lie.

"Abigail" is in theaters now.

‘Civil War’ Refuses To Surrender Domestic Box Office Crown to ‘Abigail'

'Abigail' is the third Dracula-adjacent under-performer in a row, after 'Renfield' and 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter'.

The Big Picture

  • Civil War is one of A24's five biggest hits of all time, currently sitting at $44 million at the domestic box office.
  • Abigail debuted with $10 million domestically in its debut weekend.
  • The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare punched up $9 million for its debut weekend.

Three movies — one a holdover hit and two new releases — fought a closely contested battle for the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend. A24’s dystopian thriller Civil War ended up narrowly out-performing Universal’s horror offering Abigail , and Lionsgate’s World War II spy comedy The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare . Touted as A24’s first major box office play, Civil War set new records for the indie outfit in its debut week and has already emerged as one of the five biggest hits in the company’s history.

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — better known as Radio Silence — Abigail debuted with an estimated $10 million across its first three days of release, underperforming in a manner similar to fellow Universal release Monkey Man . Directed by Dev Patel , Monkey Man also opened to $10 million a couple of weeks ago, and has so far made around $20 million domestically. This is a worryingly low potential total for a Radio Silence film — the filmmaker duo is coming off of the two latest installments in the Scream franchise, which grossed a combined total of $190 million domestically. The silver lining here is the dependably strong critical reception that Abigail has earned — the movie currently sits at a “fresh” 83% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes .

Civil War grossed an estimated $11 million this weekend , taking its running domestic total to $44 million in 10 days, and overtaking Ari Aster ’s Hereditary to become A24’s fifth-biggest release of all time. Produced on a reported budget of $50 million, Civil War has earned mostly positive reviews but has proven to be divisive among audiences . The film follows a group of journalists on a cross-country road trip across a divided America in a vaguely defined future. Civil War also debuted in a handful of overseas markets this weekend, as it commences on its quest to become A24’s biggest-ever release.

Total Business This Weekend Failed to Crack the $70 Million Mark

The latest entry in writer-director Guy Ritchie ’s dazzlingly prolific mid-career period, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare debuted with an estimated $9 million . While also positively reviewed — the movie has a 73% RT rating and an A CinemaScore — The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare cost a reported $60 million to produce, and is coming off of two consecutive under-performers by Ritchie. But none of this appears to have affected the filmmaker, who already has two new movies in different stages of production lined up. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is also shaping up to be the second box office underperformer in a row for Henry Cavill , who last starred in former Ritchie collaborator Matthew Vaughn 's Argylle .

The third and fifth spots this weekend went to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and the latest Crunchyroll anime release, Spy x Family Code: White . While the monster mashup film added an estimated $9.5 million in its fourth weekend, taking its running domestic total to around $171 million and becoming the second-biggest MonsterVerse movie , Spy x Family Code grossed around $5 million domestically, having already made around $45 million in overseas markets.

“When Eric’s friend and mentor, Dr. Ashley, arrives on the island, Ashley uncovers the true identity of Aurora and the dangers of the hidden evil inside Eric’s dig site.
