What are Machu Picchu’s operating hours?

Machu Picchu is open from 6:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. every day including weekends and holidays.

Which Machu Picchu tour is best for adrenaline seekers?

The Machu Picchu ruins have two on-site hikes: Huayna Picchu Mountain and Machu Picchu Mountain. Both can be combined with a Machu Picchu tour and take 2–3 and 4–5 hours to complete, respectively. For even more adventure, you can hike over multiple days to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail, Lares or Salkantay treks.

Where should I stay if I spend multiple days at Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu hotel and hostel options are plentiful in Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of the Machu Picchu ruins. Our Top Pick hotels here are:

  • 5-Star Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel
  • 4-Star El Mapi
  • 3-Star Casa Andina Standard Machu Picchu
  • 2-Star Waman Hotel

How many days do I need to tour Machu Picchu?

1–2 days. Two days and one night is the best amount of time to tour Machu Picchu at a leisurely pace: one day to arrive by train and another for the tour and return to Cusco. A whirlwind one-day Machu Picchu tour from Cusco is possible but it will be a long 16–17 hour day.

How long is a guided tour of Machu Picchu?

A guided tour of Machu Picchu is 2 hours long. The ruins operate on a one way circuit that leads to the exit of the ruins and re-entry is not allowed with a Machu Picchu general entrance ticket.

What will I see on a Machu Picchu tour?

A tour of Machu Picchu includes stops at the Guardhouse, agricultural zone, main gate, fountains, tower, temple zone, Temple of the Three Windows, astronomical observatory, Sacred Rock, Group of Three Doorways, royal enclosures, Temple of the Condor and storage area. You will also have views of the west agricultural zone and main square while walking through the ruins.

When Do You Want To Go?

Beautiful city that shows both the traditional and modern side of Ecuador

If you think this city’s name sounds mysterious you are right. The name "Guayaquil" is not just any name, in fact it derives from the love story myth between the Tribal Chief "Guayas" and his wife "Quil”.

Constructed around the estuary of the river Guayas, this beautiful city shows both the traditional and the more modern face of Ecuador.

You can visit places such as the historic Las Penas neighbourhood which sits raised above the city and has the most beautiful colourful houses and winding cobbled streets. These cobbled streets lead up to various vantages points that allow visitors to admire stunning fluvial landscapes. Other areas such as the LA Bahia and 9 de Outubre are also great spots for tourists to discover the history of the region in museums such as the Museo Municipal.

More modern areas can also be enjoyed as in the last decade the city has undergone a lot of positive change. Examples of that are - the beautiful riverfront promenade "Malecon 2000", green areas, and the modern shopping arcades all over the city which attract tourism from inside and outside the country.

Guayaquil is known as one of the main South American ports in the Pacific. Its climate is hot for the first semester of the year and breeze cool for the rest of it. It's a perfect tropical destination that allows you to see the traditional and modern sides of Ecuador as well as indulging in relaxation, music, and seafood.

It also has several flights departing daily to the Galapagos so it is a great getaway to these islands.

Best Time to Go

January to April is called the 'temporada' on the coast. That is the hottest time in Guayaquil and probably the one you want to pick when visiting as from July to August it is much cooler.

Guayaquil Travel Guide

guia-turistica-de-guayaquil8

Guayaquil is the largest and most populated city in all of  Ecuador , and at the same time, it’s considered its economic and commercial capital. One of the main factors of growth is undoubtedly its great seaport. Imports and exports through the Pacific Ocean have represented significant business opportunities.

One of the two international airports in the country is in Guayaquil, so it’s very likely that you make a stopover in the city if you go to Quito or  Galapagos .

One of the main attractions of Guayaquil is the tropical climate. On average you feel a temperature of 30° throughout the year. So if you plan to change the scenery on your trip, this is a great option.

You can take advantage of your stay to visit the most outstanding tourist sites in the city; it’s always suggested thata a tour guide goes with you so you can have an incredible and safe experience.

Guayaquil the Pacific Pearl

The malecon 2000.

This pier is one of the urban regeneration projects of the old Malecón Simón Bolívar. It’s quite an adventure to walk in its 2.5 kilometers of extension. It’s the perfect place to enjoy traditional dishes, admire historical monuments, gardens, museums, cinema and you can board one of the boats that will take you for a pleasant ride along the Guayas River. One of the most recent attractions of the pier, is La Perla, a 57-meter tall ferris wheel that has been decorated with thousands of LED spotlights and which turns out to be a show at night. Without a doubt, the ideal place to take a panoramic photo of the city!

The historical park

This theme park is located 7 kilometers from the city center. In its eight extension areas, you will see incredible animals and understand more about the architecture of the Guayaquil of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The wild area has 4 natural hectares that house more than 50 species of animals, among which are birds, mammals, and reptiles. In the historic area, you can visit the recreation of typical houses of Guayaquil in the first decades of the twentieth century, where the city had a tremendous economic boom. In addition, you can admire a replica of an “Urban Car,” which was the means of transportation in Guayaquil in 1866; at that time, this car was pulled by mules or horses.

It’s time to travel to Galápagos and Ecuador Do you have some question? we are here to help you

guia-turistica-de-guayaquil3

The Seminary park

The Seminar Park is one of the beauties that impress the visitors the most. Having close contact beautiful iguanas that walk relaxed near their visitors, is something very uncommon for everyone, especially if you are in the middle of a city where the spontaneity of nature is not typical. This park is located just in front of the Cathedral of Guayaquil, which is a must see. Its walls and structure tell the story of a city that was always quite attached to their beliefs.

The stairway to the hill of Santa Ana

The hill of Santa Ana is the most important historical place of Guayaquil. This is the origin of the city and expanded to its extremes. For many years, it wasn’t essential, but since the year 2001, a program of regeneration of the house of the hill was made. The community has made a significant effort to keep it clean and safe. Above all, on the steps that lead you to the top, which are surrounded by picturesque houses, restaurants, places to buy souvenirs or merely to take a well-deserved rest. The 444 steps of the hill, take you to one of the most spectacular viewpoints of the city, from where you can admire emblematic places such as the most popular football stadium in the city, the Monumental.

Guayaquil has some museums of international interest that you can’t miss, as they are; the municipal museum, the anthropological museum, the museum of contemporary art, and of course, the miniature museum. The latter has been mentioned on many occasions with awards for artistic creativity.

The cuisine of the city delights us with the most exceptional and exotic national dishes that attract people from all over the country and beyond. The most traditional thing is to eat all the derivations of green bananas, such as green tortillas with cheese, mashed green, green bowls, corviche and more. Also, you can’t miss the most traditional local dishes, such as stew with roast beef, fish onions, crab, seafood and the many soups of guts and their incredible local names. Don’t forget to check out the Galapagos Cruises page, or if you prefer, also we have someGalapagos land tours or day tours.

  • Ecuador Train Journey: Quito to Guayaquil

Sorry, there are no prices defined for this date. Please contact us by clicking on "Free quote"

Tour Description

From Quito to Guayaquil, experience the wonders of Ecuador on board the Tren Crucero, awarded leading luxury train in South America in 2014, 2015, 2106, and 2017.

Modern, electric-diesel and lovingly restored, antique steam locomotives pull a high-quality convoy of two luxury, Colonial and Republican-style themed passenger cars carrying just fifty passengers, to ensure personalized service for all.

A bar and gift-shop car with two comfortable observation lounges and an open-air terrace complete the setup of this comfortable, select boutique train.

The journey begins in the northern Andes of Ecuador, in the valley of Otavalo, as you wind your way through traditional villages to meet craftspeople and enjoy a visit to a rose plantation.

Venturing south from Quito, you will travel through the famous 'Avenue of Volcanoes', passing such giants as Cotopaxi and Chimborazo – the closest point on the planet to the sun.

After a visit to the truly-authentic Andean market of Guamote, make your way to warmer climes, zig-zagging down the mythical 'Devil's Nose'.

Descending the slopes of the colossal Andes you will enter a tropical forest world, ride through sugar-cane, rice, and cacao plantations, to end your trip on the peaceful plains of the coastal region.

Important notes

Trip details, day 1 quito – otavalo – san antonio – san roque – ibarra – quito: otavalo market, onboard show, rose plantation.

In the morning, a 2-hour bus ride will take you north of Quito, to the Imbabura Province, across rose plantations blooming in the shadow of the impressive mountains of the Otavalo valley.

Otavalo is home of skilled craftspeople whose traditional culture and crafts can be seen at the world-renowned Otavalo market.

At San Roque train station you will set off on your train journey to discover musicians, painters, weavers and skilful woodcarvers, all faithful disciples of the Quito School of Art.

Delve into this amazing world of hidden treasures, colors and textures while exploring the northern routes of the Ecuadorian railway.

Where the tracks end, you will hop off to visit the hacienda 'la Compania'. Located close to the equator, this 18th century hacienda will amaze you with its export-class rose plantation and exquisite Andean cuisine.

Drive back to Quito where you will spend the night in the first city in history to be listed as UNESCO world heritage.

Overnight at your hotel in Quito.

  • Lunch at a hacienda
  • Dinner at the hotel

Day 2 QUITO – COTOPAXI – AMBATO – URBINA: AVENUE OF VOLCANOES, CULTURAL ACTIVITIES WITH LOCAL COWBOYS, DIABLADA PILLAREÑA PARADE

Board your Tren Crucero at Quito's Chimbacalle station and begin your journey south, along the 'Avenue of Volcanoes'.

From the comfort of your seat and depending on the weather, you will be able to spot up to twenty volcanoes. For the most part inactive, some of these volcanoes have been dormant for centuries and others are very much active.

Along the way, the Andes split into two separate ranges that run parallel with each other. The fertile valley in-between these volcanic walls hosts a treasure trove of biodiversity and a hive of agricultural activity.

Your train will stop at an Andean hacienda where you will be treated to a rodeo demonstration performed by skilled local horsemen known as 'chagras'. This is also the opportunity to learn about rural life and meet the local farm animals, such as fluffy llamas.

Arriving at Ambato train station, some local devils will board the train. The 'Diablada Pillareña' parade, a picturesque and ancestral tradition will add a touch of playfulness and music to your memorable day.

In the afternoon, the tracks of the Trans-Andean train veer towards the inhospitable heights of the Urbina train station.

Over your journey, the landscapes and vegetation change drastically as the train painstakingly climbs up to the chilly Andean highlands all the way to the town of Urbina, the highest point of your itinerary at 11,800 feet (3600 m) above sea level. Here, in the shadow of the Chimborazo Volcano, the closest point on the planet to the sun, you will meet Balthazar Ushca, the last ice-merchant in the Andes, and learn the story of his ancestral trade.

Later in the afternoon you will drive to another typical Andean Hacienda in the heart of the Andes where you will spend the evening and be delighted by your hosts' ravishing cuisine.

Overnight at your hotel in Riobamba.

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Lunch onboard

Day 3 RIOBAMBA – COLTA – GUAMOTE – ALAUSI – BUCAY: RIDE ON 'THE BLACK MONSTER', THE DEVIL’S NOSE

Setting off early from Urbina, on board the 'Black Monster' steam engine, chug your way through the heart of the central Andes, amid colorful quinoa fields flecked in purples, yellows and reds, alternating with endemic species of flora and wildlife, indigenous settlements and the remains of ancient cultures.

At Colta, enjoy the skillful and complex maneuver to switch locomotives the train drivers operate and leave the 'Black Monster' behind for a diesel locomotive that will take you further south.

The Colta lake saw the birth of this charming nation when Spanish conquerors first settled on its shores.

At Guamote market, one of the last truly indigenous markets in the Andes, take your time to wander, admire and barter for some local goods.

A bus transfer will take you to Alausi where you will board another train down and across the mythical 'Devil's Nose' pass. A vertiginous 3300-foot descent (1000 meters) where the train zigzags back and forth along a track carved into the mountainside.

The original cars from the early 20th century carrying passengers down the Sibambe valley were restored to their former glory in order to make this unique and wonderful experience even more memorable.

Back in Alausi, a bus will take you down a mesmerizing journey from the imposing mountains to the peaceful coastal plains. The dramatic change in weather and vegetation is another exciting feature of this drive down the Andes.

After a 4-hour ride you will get to your hotel where you can take time to rest and reflect upon the titanic labor undertaken by the Harman brothers whose engineering prowess overcame the colossal Andean mountain range.

Overnight at your hotel in Bucay region.

Day 4 BUCAY – SAN ANTONIO – YAGUACHI – DURAN: COCOA FARM

A pleasant one-hour bus ride will take you from the Andean slopes to the country's tropical plains where rice, sugar cane, pineapple, banana and cacao plantations all add to incredible color palette.

Visit a traditional hacienda to learn about farming and harvesting of the Ecuadorian cocoa bean, a bean so exquisite it is considered the best in the world.

A bus transfer will take you to Naranjito where you will board another train heading to Duran.

At your last stop at the Yaguachi train station, another steam locomotive will be waiting for you. The ingenuity behind the engine switch is a spectacle worth-watching in itself. The sound of the whistle and the steamy locomotive take us back in time to the beginnings of the Ecuadorian railroad construction.

Transfer to your hotel.

Luxury Travel to Guayaquil

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

What started out as a small port town has impressively developed into a vibrant, bustling city; the largest in Ecuador in fact. Today Guayaquil is the country’s economic hub where its convenient location, found not to far from the coast and with good international flight connections, makes this a popular and convenient stop for most trips to Ecuador . The city is also recognised for serving as one of the main springboards for those heading over to the Galapagos , yet wishing to experience an introduction to authentic Ecuadorian life.

In the city centre you will find large selections of restaurants and cultural establishments, while venturing out only slightly you will find brilliant haciendas giving you insight into traditional Ecuadorian country living, such as the famous Hacienda la Danesa, found in the Midwestern Lowlands.

While here, a sight not to be missed is the Malecón 2000, a boardwalk overlooking the Guayas River. At 1.5 miles long, several of Guayaquil’s greatest historical monuments can be sighted as you walk its length, along with many museums, gardens, fountains, restaurants and bars. Another sight not to be missed is the Historical Park, a project made by the Central Bank of Ecuador with the aim of recapturing Ecuadorian culture for the next generation while showing visitors the traditions and way of life of Ecuador’s coast.

Additionally, if you have a few days to spare while visiting the city, another great option for making the most of your time are the several cocoa tours on offer which take you on a discovery of the chocolate production in the area, for example at Hacienda El Castillo, a traditional cacao farm.

Guayaquil Adventure Tours

Guayaquil  is the largest and the most populous city in Ecuador, as well as the nation’s main sea port. Guayaquil is situated on the west margin of the Guayas River, which flows into the Gulf of Guayaquil in the Pacific Ocean. Guayaquil is the capital of the Ecuadorian province of Guayas. The city is also the center of Ecuador’s fishing and manufacturing industries.

Interesting sites in Guayaquil include:

El Malecón 2000 – It is one of the most important civic-touristic-commercial centers of South America. It is the most complete and modern center of urban recreation of the country. With multiple green areas of entertainment and commercial service, it receives a significant number of visitors every day.

El Palacio Municipal – The Municipal Palace sits in front of the Malecón and holds the political offices of city and provincial officials. A building of the neoclassical style, it is considered one of the most important architectural works in the country.

Las Peñas Neighborhood – Located in the northeast corner of the city’s center, this neighborhood is home to many recognized artists. Many of the area’s 400-year-old houses have been converted into art galleries. A walk through this historic district gives one a glimpse into Guayaquil’s past.

Mercado Artesanal – This is the largest artisan market in the city. The market is housed in a 240-shop building that takes up the entire block of Baquerizo Avenue, between the streets Loja and Juan Montalvo. Its many vendors sell indigenous crafts, jewelry, and paintings.

Parque Centenario – Located on the street 9 de Octubre, between Lorenzo de Garaycoa and Quito, this is the largest park in downtown Guayaquil, occupying four city blocks. It is a favorite place to take refuge from the equatorial sun and enjoy the shade offered by the large trees planted liberally over the expanses of walkways and lawns.

Parque Seminario – Park Seminario, located on 10 de Agosto Avenue and Chile, is home to dozens of iguanas, some of which approach 5 feet in length. Every afternoon, workers bring fruit and vegetable scraps to lure the iguanas from the trees so that onlookers may watch them descend for a snack! Also in the park are a pond filled with colorful Japanese tilapia fish and a prominent statue of Simón Bolívar.

Luxury travel news and reviews for mexico, central america, and south america, the best hotels in guayaquil, ecuador.

Oro Verde Guayaquil

We’ve long had reviews of the two best upscale hotels in Guayaquil, Ecuador. It was time for an update though as both have gone through some renovations, plus there’s a third one on the way that’s going to be the clear top luxury choice when it opens in early 2017.

Guayaquil is kind of a strange market from a tourist standpoint because very few tourists would go there as a destination. It’s a port city and a major business hub, but the leisure travelers who end up there are usually just in for a night on the way to or from the Galapagos. A decade ago it was difficult to get to the islands any other way, but now that there are a lot more flights from Quito, many visitors bypass the second largest one in Ecuador.

One of our correspondents, Marc Chesnut, recently attended a tourism fair there, however. He got to spend some time in the city and the top hotels. The big news is the one that’s not open yet: Hotel del Parque . Here’s one of the model rooms already set up:

Hotel del Parque Guayaquil

This is a major project from the same owners of Oro Verde. It will be a 42-room boutique hotel set in a beautifully restored building that dates to 1891. It has a prized setting in the Parque Historico, a city park dotted with renovated historic architecture and cultural attractions. [Update – Hotel del Parque is now open! Click there for our review.]

Hotel Oro Verde is still the top choice in the center, with its location close to the waterfront and the oldest downtown attractions. The 236 rooms in two towers have all been spruced up in the past few years and get plenty of bookings from high-end international tour groups. Those on the premium floor have a bathtub, walk-in closets, and lounge access. All have the expected international amenities and breakfast is included in the reasonable rates. There’s a rooftop pool, fitness center with sauna and whirlpool, and four restaurants. See our full Oro Verde Guayaquil review here.

Hilton Colon Guayaquil pool

This is the obvious choice if you have Hilton status and can score an upgrade to the club floor or cash in points. There are no surprises in the predictable rooms, but on the plus side none with the polished, well-trained staff either. See our full updated review of Hilton Colon Guayaquil in Ecuador.

NEW AQ: Ports Are Latin America’s New Geopolitical Hotspot

NEW AQ: Ports Are Latin America’s New Geopolitical Hotspot

This article is adapted from AQ’ s special report on Latin America’s ports

They’re not always thought of as political hotspots. But in fact, ports are at the intersection of several crucial issues in Latin America and the Caribbean today.

The eruption of violence in Ecuador earlier this year was largely about drug gangs battling for control of its biggest port , Guayaquil. Smuggling in Chile’s port of San Antonio is driving a broad crime wave, weighing on President Gabriel Boric’s approval rating. The Chinese are building a $3.5 billion port near Lima, a potential bonanza for exporters as far away as Brazil—and a source of geopolitical tension with the United States. If countries from Mexico to Colombia are to fully seize today’s nearshoring opportunities, port upgrades must be part of the equation, with as much as $55 billion in investment needed by 2040.

This issue’s cover story shows how Punta Arenas, at the very tip of South America, is surprisingly at the heart of several key policy matters. The port lost its importance more than a century ago, with the opening of the Panama Canal. But today, a drought impacting the canal, as well as new technologies like green hydrogen and the potential economic exploitation of Antarctica due to climate change, are putting Punta Arenas back in the spotlight. Officials from China, as well as a senior U.S. military commander, have both visited the windswept region of late.

Outsiders may focus on the risks and rivalries, but Punta Arenas highlights that this is about opportunities , too. Boric’s government seems to understand the stakes, announcing in November a $400 million, five-year investment to upgrade ports and other infrastructure in the Magallanes region, where he was born and raised. “If we want to move toward more just and inclusive development, we need more and better ports,” he said. Other leaders would do well to heed his words.

A Country Awash in Violence Backs Its Leader’s Hard-Line Stance

Voters in Ecuador gave their new president, Daniel Noboa, who deployed the military to fight gangs in January, even more powers.

President Daniel Noboa of Ecuador, in a white shirt and brown jacket, gazes out a window.

By Genevieve Glatsky

Ecuadoreans voted on Sunday to give their new president more powers to combat the country’s plague of drug-related gang violence, officials said, supporting his hard-line stance on security and offering an early glimpse of how he might fare in his bid for re-election next year.

President Daniel Noboa, the 36-year-old heir to a banana empire, took office in November after an election season focused on the violence , which has surged to levels not seen in decades. In January, he declared an “internal armed conflict ” and ordered the military to “neutralize” the country’s gangs. The move allowed soldiers to patrol the streets and Ecuador’s prisons, many of which have come under gang control .

In a referendum on Sunday, Ecuadoreans voted to enshrine the increased military presence into law and to lengthen prison sentences for certain offenses linked to organized crime, among other security measures. With about 20 percent of the votes counted on Sunday night, Ecuador’s electoral authority declared that the trend toward approval of the security measures was “irreversible,” though voters rejected other proposals on the ballot.

Mr. Noboa claimed victory on social media. “I apologize for jumping the gun on a triumph that I cannot help but celebrate,” he wrote on X .

A flood of violence from international criminal groups and local gangs has turned Ecuador, a country of 17 million, into a key player in the global drug trade. Tens of thousands of Ecuadoreans have fled to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Experts saw the results of the voting Sunday as an indicator of how strongly the public supported Mr. Noboa’s stance on crime. “What is clear is that the people are saying ‘yes’ to the security model,” said an Ecuadorean political analyst, Caroline Ávila. She said the voters also had “high expectations” that the crime problem “will be solved.”

Mr. Noboa, who is expected to seek a second term in February, has high approval ratings , though they have slipped lately. He became president after his predecessor, Guillermo Lasso, facing impeachment proceedings over embezzlement accusations, called for early elections; Mr. Noboa is in office until May 2025, the remainder of Mr. Lasso’s term.

Some human rights groups have criticized Mr. Noboa’s anticrime tactics as going too far, saying they have led to abuses in prisons and in the streets. Still, most Ecuadoreans seem willing to accept Mr. Noboa’s strategy if they think it makes them safer, analysts said.

“Noboa is now one of the most popular presidents in the region,” said Glaeldys González, who researches Ecuador for the International Crisis Group. “He is taking advantage of those levels of popularity that he currently has to catapult himself to the presidential elections.”

He deployed the military against the gangs in response to a turning point in Ecuador’s long-running security crisis : Gangs attacked the large coastal city of Guayaquil after the authorities moved to take charge of Ecuador’s prisons.

Mr. Noboa’s deployment of the military was followed by a decline in violence and a precarious sense of safety, but the stability did not last. Over the Easter holiday this month, there were 137 murders in Ecuador, and kidnappings and extortion have been increasing .

Two weeks ago, Mr. Noboa took the extraordinary step of arresting an Ecuadorean politician who had taken refuge at the Mexican Embassy in Quito, in what experts called a violation of an international treaty on the sanctity of diplomatic posts. The move, which drew condemnation across the region, sent a message in line with Mr. Noboa’s heavy-handed approach to violence and graft.

Mr. Noboa said he had sent police officers into the embassy to arrest Jorge Glas , a former vice president who had been convicted of corruption, because Mexico had abused the immunities and privileges granted to the diplomatic mission. Mr. Noboa said Mr. Glas was not entitled to protection because he was a convicted criminal.

Taken together, the raid and the deployment of the military were meant to show that Mr. Noboa is tough on crime and impunity, political analysts say. Though polls show that Mr. Noboa’s approval rating has fallen in recent months, it remains high, at 67 percent.

Voter turnout on Sunday was 72 percent, according to the country’s electoral authority. Analysts considered that low, in a country where voting is mandatory and turnout usually exceeds 80 percent.

Just as voters were heading to the polls, they received another reminder of the surge in violence, as the authorities announced that the head of a prison in Manabí, a coastal province that has become a hub for transnational crime, had been killed.

Some proposals from Mr. Noboa’s government that were unrelated to security were voted down on Sunday. Ecuadoreans voted against one that would have legalized hourly employment contracts, which are currently prohibited. Labor unions say employers could use them to undermine workers’ rights and essentially pay lower salaries than the law requires. A proposal that would have allowed international arbitration of commercial disputes was also voted down.

But analysts said the overall result yielded a robust mandate for Mr. Noboa. Ms. González said it would “help the government argue that it needs more time in power to continue with these changes and these reforms in its general fight against organized crime.”

The results of the referendum are binding, and the national assembly has 60 days to pass them into law.

Some analysts said the referendum results had more to do with Mr. Noboa’s popularity than with whether the security measures were likely to be effective.

“We do not vote for the question; rather, we vote for who asked the question,” said Fernando Carrión, who studies violence and drug trafficking at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, a regional research and analysis group.

He added that measures like increasing prison sentences were likely to exacerbate the problems of overcrowding and violence in prisons.

Despite the tumultuous few weeks that preceded the voting, some voters said they were undeterred.

“I am going to vote ‘yes’ in this referendum because I am convinced that it is the only way for Ecuador to have a change, and we can all have a better future,” said Susana Chejín, 62, a resident of the southern city of Loja.

“He is making good changes for the country, to fight crime and drug trafficking,” she said of Mr. Noboa.

Others said they thought the questions on the referendum were not enough to address the country’s insecurity.

“We are still in the vicious circle of focusing on the symptoms and not on the causes,” said Juan Diego Del Pozo, 31, a photographer in Quito. “No question aims to solve structural problems, such as inequality. My vote will be a resounding ‘no’ on every question.”

Thalíe Ponce contributed reporting from Guayaquil, Ecuador, and José María León Cabrera from Quito, Ecuador.
