Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade Announce Return with 41-Date Summer Tour

After a two-decade hiatus, Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade shared they’ll set out on a goliath, 41-date summer tour touted as the Summer of Green Tour 2023. The performance will mark the ensemble’s first reunion since 2003.

Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigader–comprised of Claypool (bass), Sean Lennon (guitar), Harry Waters (keys), Paulo Baldi (drums), Mike Dillon (percussion), and Skerik (horns)–will kick off their tour in Stateline, Nev. on May 17 before winding its way throughout the country. Notable stops from the band, which was formed by Claypool in the summer of 2000 during a short break from Primus, include Denver, Asheville, N.C., Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Texas, New Orleans, Port Chester, N.Y., Boston, Los Angeles and more. During their travels, the group will also make stops at festivals like Summer Camp Music Festival, the Mountain Music Festival, the Riverbend Music Festival, and the Peach Music Festival.

Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade will also enjoy support throughout the tour from Fishbone, Neal Francis, Budos Band, W.I.T.C.H., and Moon Duo.

Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade To Reunite After 20 Years For Summer Tour

Joining Claypool and the FFFB is Fishbone, Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew, Neal Francis, Budos Band, W.I.T.C.H., and Moon Duo

les claypool uk tour

After a 20-year hiatus, Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade has announced its long-awaited return with the massive, 41-date Summer of Green Tour 2023, which will mark the band’s first appearances since summer 2003. Kicking off in Stateline, NV on Wednesday, May 17th before winding its way from coast-to-coast, the tour will feature several festival appearances, including the Summer Camp Music Festival, the Mountain Music Festival, the Riverbend Music Festival, and the Peach Music Festival. Featuring Les Claypool (bass), Sean Lennon (guitar), Harry Waters (keys), Paulo Baldi (drums), Mike Dillon (percussion), and Skerik (horns), the set will include a full performance of Pink Floyd’s iconic tenth studio album ‘Animals,’ which was famously captured on the band’s second 2001 live recording ‘Live Frogs Set 2.’

“In an age of calibrated chaos, moral constipation, and conspiranoia, it is reassuring to know that certain frogs can and do fly,” Claypool comments.

Select June performances will include a co-headlining set with Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew’s ‘Remain In Light’ Tour, which finds the Talking Heads members performing songs from a monumental period of the band’s history alongside a powerhouse band. Additional support throughout the tour include Fishbone, Neal Francis, Budos Band, W.I.T.C.H., and Moon Duo.

A limited pre-sale, including VIP upgrade options, will go on sale February 1 at 10am local time, using the code WHAMOLA . General public on sale is this Friday, February 3 at 10am local time. All show and ticket/VIP information can be found at http://www.lesclaypool.com/

Formed by Claypool in the summer of 2000 during a short break from Primus, the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade made its debut appearance at the Mountain Aire Festival before embarking on several celebrated US tours. Described by Claypool as “kind of a King Crimson meets Pink Floyd meets Frank Zappa type thing,” the band released two live albums in 2001, as well as a studio album ‘Purple Onion’ in 2002. The band’s most recent performance took place on May 10th, 2003 at the House of Blues in Orlando, Florida.

The return of the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade follows a busy year for Claypool, who in addition to performing with Bastard Jazz on NYE and throughout winter 2022, traveled the country with Primus for the band’s wildly popular ‘A Tribute To Kings’ Tour, and appeared alongside Ween at Comedy Central’s South Park: 25th Anniversary Concert” at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Last year also saw the release of Primus’ first new music in more than five years, the sprawling 3-song ‘Conspiranoid’ EP, which included the epic 11-minute opening track, “ Conspiranoia ,” and second single, “ Follow The Fool .”

Claypool is one of the most unlikely success stories in entertainment history. His trademark voice, thumping bass lines and unique worldview have become the calling cards for a number of wildly successful and influential albums in the last two decades. But through his myriad of musical and creative projects, Claypool has also become a favorite of jam banders, funk connoisseurs and pretty much everything in-between.

“Let’s put it this way … I think, with Primus and without, I’ve played every music festival in the last ten years, except Lilith Fair,” he comments. “You could say I’m the guy who doesn’t fit in anywhere, but a little bit everywhere.”

Les Claypool: “Singing Geddy Lee parts and playing bass, or just singing Geddy Lee parts period, is f**king hard, because it’s up in the upper stratosphere”

Primus are currently on the road, playing the Rush album A Farewell To Kings in its entirety. We ask Claypool what made him embark on such a mad endeavor

Les Claypool

Les Claypool – bassist, producer, novelist and low-end pioneer – is the frontman of the remarkable funk-rock band Primus, as well as a whole string of amazing side projects.

Admired for his thumping and plucking and his willingness to experiment with a host of fretted, fretless, whammy-barred, and multi-stringed instruments, the man can do it all. Tapping, clawhammer-style picking and high-register chords all populate his approach, but technique is as important as feel in his philosophy, with the groove of his playing the mainstay of his music.

You may know the 58-year-old Californian as the voice behind Primus songs such as Jerry Was A Race Car Driver and Tommy The Cat , or for his cameo role in the second Bill And Ted film, or maybe for writing novels, producing movies, running a vineyard and ranting wherever possible about his love of fishing.

Today, though, BP is interviewing the master about Primus’s [then-] forthcoming tour on which they’ll be playing through the whole of A Farewell To Kings by Rush. Who would undertake such a mad endeavor? And what does Geddy Lee of Rush think of it... and how does Les react when we tell him what Geddy thinks of the Claypool approach to bass?

Why did you choose to play A Farewell To Kings as opposed to any other Rush album?

“Well, any Rush album is an undertaking. You know, we always joked that we should go out and play Hemispheres in its entirety – but then we thought, ‘Well, maybe we actually should do Hemispheres in its entirety’.

“But one reason why we didn’t is that you can’t do Cygnus II before you do Cygnus I . In looking at all the Rush records, 2112 seemed a little too obvious, and some of the records have a little more keyboards than I’m comfortable with. But A Farewell To Kings was the first Rush record I ever heard in my youth, and it has Cygnus I on it, which is my all-time favorite tune by those guys.

“It was a pretty easy decision to make, you know. A big factor was the damn keyboards. I play keyboards on this thing, and I have a couple of Moogs that are completely covered with different-colored pieces of tape, so I know where to put my fingers. You know, I’m a bass player!”

How do the bass parts compare to the rest of the Rush catalogue?

“They’re spectacular. They’re big. They’re hard! That was back in Geddy’s Rickenbacker days, and I love those Ricky tones, although Moving Pictures was on his Fender Jazz bass, and the tones on that record are equally spectacular. But it’s Geddy Lee, you know – there weren’t a lot of duds in the Geddy Lee bass-playing world.”

So you’re playing a Ricky on this on this tour?

“I’m playing a couple of Rickys, a black 4003 that Rickenbacker sent me, and then I have the double neck, which they hadn’t made in 30 years, but they made one for me. It’s pretty spectacular. The funny thing is that when I was a kid and I had no money, my dream bass was a black Rickenbacker like Geddy’s. I didn’t have one all these years, and now I finally have one, so doing this album has fulfilled one of my dreams of my youth.”

What about the backline? Did you guys go fully authentic with the '70s Rush setup?

“We’re keeping it as authentic as possible. The funny thing is, I avoided the vintage Ampeg SVT heads for my entire career. Not because I didn’t like the sound of them, but because they’re too fucking heavy, and I just never wanted to commit to hauling the damn things around.

“But I would find that I’d go on tour to South America or whatever, and the rentals were always these vintage SVTs and they always sounded amazing, so a handful of years ago, I bought a few of them and I started using them regularly on stage. So coincidentally, I happened to be playing through an old SVT, which Geddy played through back then.”

Any pedals going on?

“Oh, there’s all kinds of shit going on, and buttons to push.”

Do you think the bass parts represent a particular section of Geddy’s career as a bass player? For example, was he in a particularly flamboyant mode when he recorded them?

“Was he ever not in a flamboyant mode? It wasn’t until the '80s, when he focused more on the keyboards, that the bass parts became a little less, I wouldn’t say less prominent, but they weren’t as in your face, I should say.

“Obviously, when he got to  Moving Pictures , and even Hemispheres to an extent, he was being pretty flamboyant with YYZ and La Villa Strangiato and things like that. I think there’s a little more riffage in those records. These parts are alligators that you have to wrestle every night, you know?”

Les Claypool

How do you find singing and playing bass at the same time?

“Well, there’s a big difference between doing my voice and playing bass, and doing Geddy’s voice and playing bass. For many years, I was never very comfortable with my singing voice, so I always said I was the narrator of the band. But singing Geddy Lee parts and playing bass, or just singing Geddy Lee parts period, is fucking hard, because it’s up in the upper stratosphere.

“I talked to him about it when we were working on this. I said, ‘When you sang those parts, are they falsetto or are they full voice?’ He told me they were full voice, so that was tough. In fact, at one point my son was listening in on some of the rehearsals, and he said, ‘Dad, you need to quit trying to sing it like Geddy. Just sing it in your style. You’re trying to sound like Geddy and it’s a little cringeworthy’.”

I can see definite parallels in approach between Primus and Rush.

“It’s definitely turned around. When we toured with Rush in Europe in the UK, many years ago, we got so much shit for it, especially from the press. They were like, ‘What are you guys doing playing with these prog-rock dinosaurs?

“You know, that was when we were the cool alternative band or whatever back in the day, coming up with Soundgarden and all these other bands. We really got shit on by the press, especially in the UK, for doing that tour. It was like admitting you’re a Star Trek fan or something. In hindsight it was a wonderful, wonderful thing, but the press did not like it so much.”

Admitting you liked Rush in the '90s was like saying ‘I play Dungeons & Dragons’

Ah well. Screw the press.

“And you’re from the press, haha! But that’s exactly what I’m saying. It’s interesting how things have turned around. I was watching a documentary from years ago that I was in, and a lot of musicians stepped up and said, ‘Oh, I’ve been a Rush fan forever’.

“Well, in the early '90s, nobody would have admitted that. They would never admit they were Rush fans. It was like saying, ‘I play Dungeons & Dragons’ – not necessarily the hippest thing to admit in the days of grunge.”

What are the most challenging bass parts on the album?

“Parts of Cygnus are pretty tough, but it’s all relatively tough! Even wrestling the Rickenbacker is a whole different ballgame than playing one of my Pachyderm or Carl Thompson basses. But playing the album has gotten to be very therapeutic. You know, we go out and we do a Primus set, and I’m just like, ‘Okay, let’s get through the Primus set, because I want to play the Rush set’.

“It’s fun. It’s like a vacation. Not that playing Primus songs isn’t fun, but with the Rush thing, I look forward to it every single night. It’s just feels good to play it. So I don’t know which is more challenging, although ironically, Madrigal is probably the most challenging because it’s the most non-Rush song on the album. I don’t think those guys ever played it.”

Are you adjusting your playing with the Ricky?

“It’s heavier for one thing, especially that double neck. That’s like putting cinder blocks around your neck. The Carl Thompsons and my Pachyderm basses are like Ferraris. They’re designed so you can get around them real easy.

“Not that the Ricky isn’t, but Rickys aren’t the best for thumping and plucking, not that I do any of that on the Rush stuff. It’s just a different beast. They sound amazing, but it’s a longer scale, so it’s a little more challenging than one of my Ferraris.”

What was Geddy’s reaction when you told him you wanted to play a Rush album live?

“I actually asked him about it quite a while ago. We originally planned on doing this thing a while ago, but then we ended up taking the Slayer tour which postponed it, and then Covid hit and postponed everything.

“When we originally talked about doing it, Neil Peart was still on the planet. I just texted Geddy and said, ‘Hey, we’re thinking about doing this. What do you think?’ He said, ‘Oh, that would be great’. He was stoked on the idea.

“And Alex [Lifeson, Rush guitarist] has been very supportive too. Lor [Larry LaLonde, Primus guitarist] will call him and say, ‘What the hell chord are you playing in this one section?’ Alex has been very helpful with that, and he loaned him some guitars as well. So they’ve both been extremely supportive. We’ve yet to play it in front of them, and I’m all nervous about that.”

I just texted Geddy and said, ‘Hey, we’re thinking about doing this. What do you think?’ He said, ‘Oh, that would be great’. He was stoked

Is that going to happen?

“I imagine they’ll show up at some show. We’re going to Canada in April.”

Yes – starting off in Toronto.

“We start in Toronto? Holy shit. I didn’t even know that.”

What are Geddy’s strengths as a bassist?

“His phrasing is unbelievable. It’s different than anybody else. It’s almost like Paul McCartney, in that he is very melodic and in the way he phrases it. It’s almost lyrical, the way he phrases his parts, and Geddy has that kind of phrasing.

“You can sing Geddy Lee bass parts. Remember when he did the Big Beautiful Book Of Bass ? Well, I was in that thing, because he wanted to put one of my Italian Eko basses in there.

"When he came out to my place, I said, ‘Part of the deal of me doing this is that you’ve got to show me the proper way to play YYZ ,’ so we hung out and we played some stuff together, and he showed me how to play that song. It turns out I’ve been playing it wrong this whole time. The fingering is just different than I would think of doing it.

He’s Geddy Lee, you know. Nobody plays like him

“You know, he has his way of doing it, and it looks so effortless. You watch his fingers. When I play that song, I’m doing all this moving around with my fingers, all over the place, but he’s just barely doing anything, and he’s making all these incredible sounds. So he’s Geddy Lee, you know. Nobody plays like him.”

How are you and he similar as bass players, then?

“Well, I grew up listening to that guy. It’s me taking my influences from him. He made some comments in the press recently that I inspired him when we first toured together, but you know, I don’t see it. What I’ve always aspired to do is to have that kind of lyrical phrasing in what I play, especially when I’m doing pizzicato stuff. I often think of guys like Geddy or Paul McCartney or Chris Squire as guys that have that lyrical sense.”

Would those be your three main influences on bass?

“Well, Larry Graham is the king, but there’s a lot of them. I started off with Geddy when I was a kid, and then this one kid who was older than me said, ‘You’ve got to listen to Larry Graham and Stanley Clarke’ and I went, ‘Whoa, there’s a whole other world out there’. Eventually I got to people like Tony Levin, who is one of my all-time favorites. Every note he plays is the right note, and he has one of the best tones of anybody.”

If Geddy showed up to a show, would you let him sit in and do a solo?

“Haha! I have a band with Sean Lennon called The Delirium and we played in Toronto. Geddy told me he was going to come to the show, and I said, ‘Hey, you want to sit in?’ but he was like, ‘You know, I’m not really a sitting-in kind of guy, I’m not a jammer’. I said, ‘It’s Tomorrow Never Knows , it’s one note. If you want to do it, come on!’ And he came out and he killed it. It was amazing. It was one of the highlights of my life.”

We asked Geddy for his analysis of you as a bass player, and he told us, ‘Les has a unique rhythmic sensibility. His tone is original, deep, and true. And he’s developed a style that is deliciously eccentric’. Is that a reasonable assessment, as you see it?

“Wow. That makes me blush. I think that’s wonderful.”

Every now and again I think, ‘Geddy Lee’s a good friend of mine’. If I’d known that when I was 14, I would have ejaculated in my pants

We also asked Geddy what he thought of you doing this tour, and he said that it was a great compliment, and also a little bit nuts.

“Well, I think it is – on all fronts. It’s definitely nuts, and I get to wear a satin robe every night on stage, which is pretty spectacular. That’s another sprinkle on the cupcake of this project.

“Every now and again I think, ‘Geddy Lee’s a good friend of mine’. If I’d known that when I was 14, I would have ejaculated in my pants to even think of the notion. With my career, I’m most proud that I’ve been able to meet, befriend and oftentimes work with a lot of my heroes – and it’s been a wonderful, wonderful thing.”

Les Claypool Reactivates Fearless Flying Frog Brigade for First Shows in 18 Years

Primus frontman Les Claypool has ventured out in a variety of bands over the years, and he's reactivating Col. Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade for 2023. The group last performed in 2005, making this their first performances in 18 years.

Making sure to make the most of their return to the road, the band will play 40 stops on the "Summer of Green" tour, spanning from mid-May through mid-July, wrapping July 15 in Phoenix, Arizona. As the name at the front of the moniker, Claypool has been the constant throughout a revolving list of musicians who have played in the group. For this run, Claypool will be joined by guitarist Sean Lennon, keyboardist Harry Walters and drummer Paulo Baldi, while saxophonist Skerik and percussionist Mike Dillon will also join the group.

While the long-awaited return of Col. Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade is the draw, the group has some solid support on the run with Fishbone, Jerry Harrison & Adrian Belew: Remain in Light, Neal Francis, The Budos Band, Witch and Moon Duo all taking turns opening select dates. Each of the support acts are noted alongside their respective tour dates at the bottom of this post.

Speaking with Relix , Claypool stated, “The Frog Brigade was a wonderful conduit into this very cool world that I had always straddled. It has always been very important to me–as far as just evolving and representing a new chapter in my life, not just career.”

As part of their sets, the band will revisit their recreation of Pink Floyd 's Animals, a staple of their early era shows, along with a mix of cover songs and original material.

There will be a limited pre-sale starting tomorrow (Feb. 1) at 10AM local time, with the general public on-sale set to start this Friday (Feb. 3) at 10AM local time. Get your tickets for the run here .

Les Claypool Expands Fearless Frog Brigade 2023 Reunion Tour Dates

The band's first trek in 20 years

Les Claypool Expands Fearless Frog Brigade 2023 Reunion Tour Dates

Back in January, Les Claypool announced that he’d be taking his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade on their first tour in 20 years. The musician is keeping the reunion excitement going even further with additional 2023 shows through October.

Claypool and company are already in the thick of their previously-announced 42-date trek, which wraps up in Phoenix on July 15th. The Frog Brigade will get things going again in Oakland on October 11th, making stops in cities including Albuquerque, Denver, Chicago, and Cincinnati before the finale on Halloween in Nashville.

The Frog Brigade touring lineup includes Claypool on bass, Sean Lennon on guitar, Harry Waters on keys, Paulo Baldi on drums, Mike Dillon on percussion, and Skerik on horns. Each night, the band’s set will feature a performance of Pink Floyd’s Animals in full, reprising the Frog Brigade’s rendition of the LP that was included on 2001’s Live Frogs Set 2  recording.

You can find tickets via StubHub , where your order is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.

LES CLAYPOOL's FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE Announces 'Hunt For Green October' 2023 Tour

As it continues to wind its way across the U.S. on a massive 41-date "Summer Of Green" tour 2023, marking the band's first appearances since the summer of 2003, LES CLAYPOOL'S FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE has announced that it will return to the road this fall for 10 additional appearances. Dubbed the "Hunt For Green October" tour, the run will begin at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California on Wednesday, October 11 before heading east, stopping at favorite venues like Denver's Mission Ballroom, St. Louis's The Factory, and Chicago's Salt Shed, before culminating with a special Halloween performance at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee on Tuesday, October 31. Additional performances may be announced in the coming weeks. The news comes as media around the country praise the band's reunion, with Glide Magazine writing, "Despite the 20-year gap in their touring history, LES CLAYPOOL'S FROG BRIGADE is hitting the ground running with a setlist filled with classic covers and loved originals." Buffalo.fm called the tour "spectacular."

A limited artist pre-sale will open tomorrow, Wednesday, June 14 at 10 a.m. local time and close on Thursday, June 15 at 10 p.m. local time, using the code WHAMOLA. General public on sale is this Friday, June 17 at 10 a.m. local time.

Formed by Claypool in the summer of 2000 during a short break from PRIMUS , the FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE made its debut appearance at the Mountain Aire Festival before embarking on several celebrated U.S. tours. Described by Claypool as "kind of a KING CRIMSON -meets- PINK FLOYD -meets- Frank Zappa -type thing," the band released two live albums in 2001, as well as a studio album "Purple Onion" in 2002. The band's most recent performance took place on May 10, 2003 at the House of Blues in Orlando, Florida.

The return of the FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE follows a busy year for Claypool , who in addition to performing with BASTARD JAZZ on NYE and throughout winter 2022, traveled the country with PRIMUS for the band's wildly popular "A Tribute To Kings" tour, and appeared alongside WEEN at Comedy Central's "South Park: 25th Anniversary Concert" at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Last year also saw the release of PRIMUS 's first new music in more than five years, the sprawling three-song "Conspiranoid" EP, which included the epic 11-minute opening track "Conspiranoia" and second single "Follow The Fool" .

Claypool is one of the most unlikely success stories in entertainment history. His trademark voice, thumping bass lines and unique worldview have become the calling cards for a number of wildly successful and influential albums in the last two decades. But through his myriad of musical and creative projects, Claypool has also become a favorite of jam banders, funk connoisseurs and pretty much everything in between.

"Let's put it this way … I think, with PRIMUS and without, I've played every music festival in the last ten years, except Lilith Fair ," he comments. "You could say I'm the guy who doesn't fit in anywhere, but a little bit everywhere."

LES CLAYPOOL'S FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE 's "Hunt For Green October" tour dates:

October 11th - Oakland, CA - Fox Theater October 12th - Riverside, CA - Riverside Municipal Auditorium October 14th - Albuquerque, NM - El Rey Theater October 15th - Denver, CO - Mission Ballroom October 17th - St. Louis, MO - The Factory October 18th - Chicago, IL - Salt Shed October 27th - Live Oak, FL – Hulaween* October 29th - Charlotte, NC - The Fillmore October 30th - Cincinnati, OH - Andrew J Brady Music Center October 31st - Nashville, TN - Ryman Auditorium

Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade Reunites For 41 Date ‘Summer Of Green’ Tour

A limited pre-sale, including VIP upgrade options, will go on sale February 1 at 10am local time, using the code WHAMOLA. General public on sale is this Friday, February 3 at 10am local time. All show and ticket/VIP information can be found at http://www.lesclaypool.com/

LES CLAYPOOL Announces FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE Massive Spring/Summer 2023 Tour, First in 20 Years

les claypool uk tour

After a 20-year hiatus, LES CLAYPOOL ‘S FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE has announced its long-awaited return with the massive, 41-date “Summer Of Green” tour 2023, which will mark the band’s first appearances since summer 2003. Kicking off in Stateline, Nevada on Wednesday, May 17 before winding its way from coast-to-coast, the tour will feature several festival appearances, including the Summer Camp Music Festival , the Mountain Music Festival , the Riverbend Music Festival , and the Peach Music Festival . Featuring Les Claypool (bass), Sean Lennon (guitar), Harry Waters (keys), Paulo Baldi (drums), Mike Dillon (percussion), and Skerik (horns),the set will include a full performance of PINK FLOYD ‘s iconic tenth studio album “Animals” , which was famously captured on the band’s second 2001 live recording “Live Frogs Set 2” .

“In an age of calibrated chaos, moral constipation, and conspiranoia, it is reassuring to know that certain frogs can and do fly,” Claypool comments.

Select June performances will include a co-headlining set with Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew ‘s “Remain In Light” tour, which finds the TALKING HEADS members performing songs from a monumental period of the band’s history alongside a powerhouse band. Additional support throughout the tour include FISHBONE , NEAL FRANCIS , BUDOS BAND , W.I.T.C.H. and MOON DUO .

A limited pre-sale, including VIP upgrade options, are on sale since yesterday (February 1) at 10 a.m. local time, using the code WHAMOLA . General public on sale is this Friday, February 3 at 10 a.m. local time. Head over HERE for more details.

Formed by Claypool in the summer of 2000 during a short break from PRIMUS , the FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE made its debut appearance at the Mountain Aire Festival before embarking on several celebrated U.S. tours. Described by Claypool as “kind of a KING CRIMSON -meets- PINK FLOYD -meets- Frank Zappa -type thing,” the band released two live albums in 2001, as well as a studio album “Purple Onion” in 2002. The band’s most recent performance took place on May 10, 2003 at the House of Blues in Orlando, Florida.

The return of the FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE follows a busy year for Claypool , who in addition to performing with BASTARD JAZZ on NYE and throughout winter 2022, traveled the country with PRIMUS for the band’s wildly popular “A Tribute To Kings” tour, and appeared alongside WEEN at Comedy Central’s “South Park: 25th Anniversary Concert” at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Last year also saw the release of PRIMUS ‘s first new music in more than five years, the sprawling three-song “Conspiranoid” EP, which included the epic 11-minute opening track “Conspiranoia” and second single “Follow The Fool” .

Claypool is one of the most unlikely success stories in entertainment history. His trademark voice, thumping bass lines and unique worldview have become the calling cards for a number of wildly successful and influential albums in the last two decades. But through his myriad of musical and creative projects, Claypool has also become a favorite of jam banders, funk connoisseurs and pretty much everything inbetween.

les claypool uk tour

“Let’s put it this way … I think, with PRIMUS and without, I’ve played every music festival in the last ten years, except Lilith Fair ,” he comments. “You could say I’m the guy who doesn’t fit in anywhere, but a little bit everywhere.”

A PERFECT CIRCLE, PRIMUS and PUSCIFER's Sessanta tour kickoff: See setlist and videos

Maynard James Keenan's Sessanta celebrations kicked off in grand fashion last night (April 2nd). The three-way, collaborative package tour featuring A Perfect Circle , Puscifer and Primus brought Boston's excellently named Wang Theatre an epic taste of each project, not to mention their recent collaborative Sessanta E.P.P.P.

As expected, the bands took turns performing throughout the night, with A Perfect Circle starting things off, Primus taking the second slot, and Puscifer cleaning up the first round. They didn't exactly stick to that formation, though, as you can see through the mega-sized, 29-song setlist (courtesy of Setlist.fm ) below.

The Sessanta tour's collaborative spirit saw Keenan jumping onstage to help Primus through the iconic, slap-metal funkiness of "Tommy the Cat," while Primus drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander leant two hands to A Perfect Circle on "The Hollow," and Les Claypool — wearing his finest Pork Soda mask — bowed his way through Puscifer's "Grand Canyon."

The show notably marked the live debuts of APC's "Kindred," Puscifer's "No Angel" and Primus' "Pablo's Hippos," the three tracks off the Sessanta E.P.P.P.

As is his way, Keenan asked concertgoers not to take photos or videos throughout the show, but he did finally grant folks permission to film and photograph the finale performance of Puscifer's "Grand Canyon." Watch fan-shot videos above and below.

The Sessanta tour rolls through the U.S. until the middle of May. You'll find the full run of dates over here .

Missy Elliott to Embark on First Headlining Tour Ever, With Busta Rhymes, Ciara and Timbaland as Support

ciara missy elliott busta rhymes tour

Missy Elliott , whose career has provided the very definition of “leave ’em wanting more,” has long resisted touring, but that’s changing in 2024. Along with some high-profile support acts, the hip-hop icon will embark on a tour of arenas in 24 cities this year — shockingly, the first time she’s toured as a headliner in her entire career, which began with a bang in the 1990s.

Supporting her along the way will be a trio of figures that are also instantly recognizable to anyone who knows Elliott’s career: Busta Rhymes , Ciara and Timbaland .

Scott-Young credits a key historic milestone for spurring Elliott into action. The call that she was read came “probably after the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. I think that was a seismic moment for her as well, where she realized that this was a goal and a dream that she had been working so hard to attain. And now that she felt that she had achieved that pinnacle, she wanted to really do this thing that she put off for so long, which was go out on the road. It certainly wasn’t for lack of opportunity or offers. I think it was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame of it.”

The tour — dubbed “Out of This World: The Missy Elliott Experience Tour” — begins July 4 in Vancouver and wraps up Aug. 22 in Rosemont, Illinois. Key stops along the way include shows July 11 at L.A,’s Crypto Arena, Aug. 9 at Newark, NJ’s Prudential Center and Aug. 12 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The outing will also take her to cities including Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, Oakland, Seattle, Austin, Houston, Tampa, Baltimore, Montreal and Toronto.

“This is an incredible time in my life as I am experiencing so many milestone ‘firsts,'” Elliott said in a statement. “Being the FIRST female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now going out on my FIRST headline tour,. Fans have been asking me to tour forever but I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right because I knew if I was ever going to do it, I had to do it big, and I had to do it with family!”

The tour is being produced by Live Nation in association with Scott-Young, CEO of Monami Entertainment.

In recent years, Elliott has performed at some isolated festival dates, where she has bowled crowds over, along with a gig last year at Southern California’s Yamavaa Casino, which Variety reviewed , openly wondering why this show was not on the road. (The show was also ranked by Variety as one of the best concerts of the year at the end of 2023.)

Says Scott-Young, “I mean, look, she’s always been ahead of her time and as much as we’ve heard, ‘Well, so why did you wait so long?,’ she was just like, ‘It wasn’t that I was waiting — it’s just the timing is now.’ And Missy is very absolute about knowing exactly when she feels it is time to do something. So yeah, when we did the Yamavaa Casino, we all had the same reaction you did. Like, oh my God, this is fantastic, and we should be taking this around the country, around the world.”

The full lineup was a key part of why Elliott was willing to do this now, says the manager-producer.

“For Missy it was very important that when she embarked on this journey, she did it with what she’s calling her family,” Scott-Young says. “Busta and Missy have been twins for so long; people have compared them in terms of their unique ability to really think outside of the box, in terms of their personas, in terms of their music. So people have always wanted to see them do something together. And for me, that’s kind of a personal milestone, because I’ve managed them both for many years, and now still to this day am intricately involved with both of their careers and their lives. So to see them together on that stage is going to be a personal moment for me. And of course, Ciara has worked with her and they’ve become friends, and she looks to Missy as a mentor. She has such a dynamic stage show herself and is a pop star in her own right. And of course, Timbaland, who I call her partner in rhyme; those two have a long history.

“So from beginning to end, I will say this, it will be a seamless experience,” Scott-Young says, while declining to say exactly what format individual or collective sets might take. “I think everyone is aware they all have songs that they’ve collaborated on together. So of course we want the show to feel like a family affair.”

Scott-Young says she’s met with disbelief when she reminds industry supporters that there has never been a proper Elliott tour, despite her rise to fame in the ’90s, even as she participated in group road shows like Lilith Fair back in the day.

“Everybody that I tell this is her first headline, they go, ‘Oh, no, no, no.’ Then they’re like, ‘Oh crap, you’re right.’ Because her presence is so powerful and we felt her throughout music for the last three decades. But the idea that she has never done great stages across the country is a little mind-boggling when you think of that, because she’s always felt so omnipresent.”

Is that just-as-elusive-a-thing — a full new album, which would be her first since 2005, if it were to come to be — also possible? “I mean, I would always say with Missy, you can never say never,” Scott-Young says. “And you can also never predict. I think we all thought this moment would never come, that we would see her headlining a tour, and here we are. So I would never say no. That’s all I will say about Missy Elliott.”

Scott-Young already had a big year ahead with a tour that will bring together XSCAPE and SWV along with Mya, Total and 702. “2024 is the year of intention for me. Everything that I’ve set my mind to and become determined to see come to life is coming to fruition. To put up these two tours within weeks of each other is unprecedented week and they were both very, very important to me personally for different reasons.”

The XSCAPE/SWV/et al. concept “came about as a result of the show that I did on Bravo, ‘The Queens of R&B,’ where the goal was to take the ladies out on a tour,” before a contretemps got in the way of that. Then, “we were able to come back together and realize that, collectively, they were stronger, leaning into just the women empowerment and supporting each other. These ladies put their differences aside to give the fans what they want. … This show is gonna be a women’s anthem from start to finish. It’s just a symbol of the resilience of women overcoming adversity, coming up on the other side, triumphant and celebrating their talents and gifts and sharing it with the world.”

As for Elliott and company, “Don’t take the tour itself for granted, the manager is urging: “All I’ll say is this: we never know when this will happen again,” Scott-Young says. “So this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I know what we’re getting ready to deliver on that stage.”
