LIRR Continues Discounted Fare Pilot for 20-Trip Tickets and Monthly Tickets

Mta away offers discounted beach packages and escorted tours , lirr set pandemic-era ridership record on june 28 .

MTA Long Island Rail Road Interim President and Metro-North Railroad President Catherine Rinaldi was joined by Senator Todd Kaminsky, Long Beach City Manager Donna M. Gayden, tourism officials and lifeguards on the Long Beach Boardwalk to announce the continuation of the railroad’s fare promotions and highlight the LIRR’s summer packages and escorted tours.

“Summer is here, and the LIRR is the best way to explore everything Long Island has to offer,”  said LIRR Interim President and Metro-North Railroad President Catherine Rinaldi . “Relax and skip the traffic while we get you to the beach, park, winery, or brewery. Between our increased service and discounted fares, we’re ready to serve communities across New York.”

“There’s no easier or more affordable way to get to the beach than the LIRR,”  said Long Beach City Manager Donna M. Gayden . “The LIRR lets out in the heart of downtown Long Beach and just steps from the beach. We invite everyone to take advantage of these discounted packages and avail themselves of all Long Beach has to offer.”

“The city of Long Beach welcomes all commuters and New Yorkers back with the goal of reaching pre-pandemic levels at our shores,”  said Long Beach Parks and Recreation Commissioner Joseph Brand . “It’s no secret the railroad is the easiest and most economical way to visit Long Beach this summer.”

“The train to the beach is a great service that gives beachgoers an opportunity to visit Jones Beach on a relaxed and stress-free trip,”  said George Gorman Jr., Regional Director for New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation .

“I want to thank the Long Island Rail Road for being such incredible partners and offering deals and increased service to bring visitors from around the globe to our region,”  said V.P. of Communications & Partner Relations for Discover LI Justine DiGiglio . “We’re all hoping 2022 is a record-breaking tourism year for Long Island.”

Since the MTA’s pilot fare program began on February 25, the LIRR has sold 62,598 20-trip tickets. The MTA announced it is continuing its more affordable ticketing options for Long Island Rail Road customers including:

  • A 20-trip ticket will offer 20% off comparable 20 peak one-way fares when purchased through MTA eTix, or at a ticket window. These tickets are valid for 60 days.
  • Monthly tickets, which are currently discounted between 48% and 61% of the price of a comparable number of one-way peak tickets, will be discounted by an additional 10%.

The railroad provides additional service to Long Beach, Freeport, Montauk and Greenport. On weekends, Long Beach has one additional eastbound and one additional westbound train.  There are also three additional eastbound and two additional westbound trains for travel to and from Freeport Station, the closest station to Jones Beach. On Fridays, the “Cannonball” Hamptons Express train will depart from Penn Station at 4:06 p.m. In addition, there are other Friday afternoon extra trains to the Hamptons and Montauk, and additional Sunday westbound departures back from Montauk and the Hamptons.

The LIRR set a pandemic-era ridership record on Tuesday, June 28. The LIRR carried 199,956 riders (69% of pre-pandemic weekday ridership), surpassing the previous pandemic-era record of 192,593 set on June 15.

MTA Away, along with partners like Discover Long Island, is offering discounted LIRR beach packages and summer/fall escorted tours to many popular Long Island attractions, including the Montauk Lighthouse, wine country, breweries, cruises and mansions, generating incremental ridership while supporting the Long Island economy and local businesses. The Best Easy Day Trips to Take on the Long Island Rail Road

Coe Hall mansion

The Long Island Rail Road may be best known for the day-to-day drudgery of transporting thousands of commuters to and from their 9-to-5 (plus a few unruly, inebriated passengers). But the LIRR’s 700+ miles of track across a far-reaching sandbar aren't there just for all work and no play. The extensive rail system also connects to some of the greatest (and close-to-NYC) excursions the Island has to offer, from beachfront vistas to charming small towns. And when you're visiting the myriad wineries, breweries, and cocktail bars available, it’s also one hell of a designated driver. So think outside the five boroughs and let the LIRR pilot your next day trip.

Belmont Park

Belmont Park in Elmont

LIRR stop : Belmont Travel time from Penn Station : 35 minutes Price one-way : $8 It’s home to the grand finale of horse racing’s prestigious Triple Crown, but the race track at Belmont isn’t only worth visiting for the Belmont Stakes. In fact, it’s a much less crowded and laid-back day out during any other race day of the year, from May-July and September-October. Just be sure to check the race schedule before you plan (trains only run on race days), and bring a cooler of beer, a picnic lunch, and a blanket to spread out on the trackside lawn (oversized Kentucky Derby-style hats are optional, but encouraged). If you’re feeling especially confident, you can even try your luck at selecting a winning horse.

Parlay Rockville Centre

Rockville Centre

LIRR stop : Rockville Centre, Babylon Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 42 minutes Price one-way : $13 peak, $9.50 off-peak What was once a sleepy village is now a vibrant, youthful Downtown community. Somewhere between the feeling of a charming small town and an exciting city, Rockville Centre offers a huge number of restaurants, bars, and local shops, all within a short walk of the train station. Start the day off with your caffeine of choice at Kookaburra Coffee on N. Village Ave, a local institution with baristas skilled in both espresso drinks and latte art. For food, the possibilities are endless. Interested in a gastropub with a great tap selection? Stop by Parlay for burgers or Croxley's  for wings. If house-smoked barbecue sounds better, check out The Smokin’ Rib . If you’re staying into the night, make sure to channel the Jazz Age, Gatsby-style at the new speakeasy Cork and Kerry . Unlike similar gin joints in the city, you won’t have wait hours outside just to get in the door and receive the side-eye from pretentious staff.

Surf2Live Surf School

LIRR stop : Long Beach, Long Beach Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 57 minutes Price one-way : $13 peak, $9.50 off-peak Not many beaches on Long Island are a short walk from the train, which is why Long Beach is such an asset. Add in the fact that there are plenty of neighboring restaurants and bars to enjoy after a day in the sun, and you’ll find one of the most lively beach communities on the Island. For those who get bored lying in the sand all day, Long Beach is also a fantastic place to learn to surf.  Surf2Live offers lessons for all levels of learners (plus, the waves on this stretch of sand tend to be kind to beginners). After working up an appetite, it’s worth the walk over to W. Beech St for dinner at Lost & Found . Chef Alexis Trolf prepares unexpected dishes like venison tartare or puffer fish while chatting with guests from his open kitchen.

Bethpage State Park Golf

Farmingdale

LIRR stop : Farmingdale, Ronkonkoma Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 54 minutes Price one-way : $13 peak, $9.50 off-peak Another example of Long Island’s many engaging Main Streets, the tiny, yet entertaining, Downtown of Farmingdale is home to several notable eating and drinking destinations. The Rolling Spring Roll may be the best spot on LI for Vietnamese pho -- the massive, steaming bowls of noodle soup that will surely cure whatever ails you. A few doors down, Lithology Brewing Company is one of the newest additions to the craft beer scene, and serves up samples in its tasting room daily. For a literary lunch, the Library Café  takes a storybook setting (the former public library) and fills it with a pub-like menu and an extensive cocktail assortment. As a bonus for avid golfers, Farmingdale is also home to the Island’s most famous pro course, Bethpage Black . If you’re looking to spend the morning playing the same course as the PGA greats, tee times can be reserved in advance, and the course is only a five-minute cab ride from the LIRR station.

Planting Fields Arboretum

Planting Fields Arboretum

LIRR stop : Oyster Bay, Oyster Bay Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 1 hour, 21 minutes, plus a five-minute cab ride Price one-way : $13 peak, $9.50 off-peak A former Gold Coast estate, this 409-acre site offers a glimpse into Long Island’s golden age. Planting Fields is home to Coe Hall, a Tudor Revival mansion, surrounded by all of its formal gardens, extensive hiking trails, and greenhouses filled with a huge variety of flora. Tours of the lavish, turn-of-the-century estate, as well as of most of the various gardens, are available for five dollars. Wandering through the stately hedgerows among countless species of flowers and plants feels worlds away from the smog and traffic of city life. It’s like hitting a reset button for the afternoon.

Roanoke Vinyards

LIRR stop : Mattituck, Ronkonkoma Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 2 hours, 26 minutes Price one-way : $28.25 peak, $20.50 off-peak North Fork charm abounds in Mattituck, where cute, well-curated shops line Love Lane (yes, that’s a real street name). Lombardi's Love Lane Market and The Village Cheese Shop both stock delicious specialty food and tasty local finds in beautiful surroundings, only a block from the train. Love Lane Kitchen is also a village institution; locals and day-trippers alike flock to this neighborly cafe for breakfast served late into the day. If you only have time for a quick wine tasting, Roanoke Vineyards has a convenient wine bar right in the center of Downtown. But if you want to explore LI’s wine country more in depth, East End Bike Tours on Main Rd offers a wide variety of peddling adventures to some of the North Fork’s favorite vineyards, many of which include picnic excursions and plenty of wine tastings.

Dan Flavin

Bridgehampton

LIRR stop : Bridgehampton, Montauk Branch Travel time from Penn Station : 2 hours, 33 minutes Price one-way : $28.25 peak, $20.50 off-peak Let go of any preconceived notions about the Hamptons’ elitist attitude and stuffy all-white parties, because if you’re a fan of contemporary art, Bridgehampton is well worth a visit. The Dan Flavin Institute , as part of the Dia Art Foundation, displays the illuminating work of this innovative contemporary artist known for his talent with light. Many of Flavin’s fluorescent light sculptures are housed here, in what was once a fire station. The colorful arrangements create a glowing environment that as much transforms the white walls in the room as it will transform the way you look at light. Afterwards, continue the art excursion into Downtown, where several galleries display intriguing local works. Finish your wandering with a visit to Round Swap Farm 's store front on School St. The local produce, jams, and baked goods here are a product of nine generations of family farming, truly an art form in and of itself.

Long Island Railroad Spring Day Trips For The Whole Family

long island railroad escorted tours

When most New Yorkers think of the Long Island Railroad  — or, as it’s commonly called, the LIRR — they think of commuters and crowds, but that’s really giving the system a bad rap. The network includes over 700 miles of track that reach to the farthest point on Long Island; think beaches, parks, wineries, picturesque towns and more! The LIRR even provides travel packages and guided tours at some of its locations and many are perfect for  day out with the family. So hop a train for an easy city escape on the Long Island Railroad this spring!

Best for Family Fun

Montauk Village Perhaps you’ve seen those “MTK The End” stickers on the bumpers of cars; they refer to the seaside town of Montauk, which is, in fact, the furthest point on the island. Take the LIRR to the Montauk Station, and take in the charming town, where you will discover shops, restaurants, fishing, parks, and beaches.

It’s just over 3 hours from Penn Station, but the long trip is sans traffic, so that’s a plus.

Freeport’s Nautical Mile The Nautical Mile   is a waterfront park, boardwalk, and marina that spans four acres. Bring the kids to Crow’s Nest Mini Golf course for some family fun, then take in the waterfront at a delicious restaurant or grab a cone from one of the several ice cream shops on the pier.

Take the Babylon Branch train to Freeport and hop in a taxi for a short ride to Nautical Mile.

Bethpage Bikeway Take the LIRR to the Massapequa Station and you can arrange to be met by a tour guide, or a have bikes waiting for you so you can take off on your own. The Bikeway is a 13-mile  trail that takes you through wetland preserves and two state parks. Enter the trail through the Massapequa Preserve which has public restrooms and a playground.

Historical and Educational Sights

Coe Hall and the Planting Fields This Long Island estate has trails, gardens, tons of history to discover, not to mention a gorgeous mansion from Long Island’s Golden Age. Have your kids count how many different types of flowers they see (there are a lot). This year the Arbor Day Festival is April 29-30 and families can enjoy live music, a kid’s tree climbing event, face painting, a petting zoo, and more.

Take the train to the Oyster Bay stop and hop in a short cab ride.

Long Island Children’s Museum This museum, which is just a short distance from the Hempstead stop is an entire space devoted to play. Kids can check out the Klutz exhibit, which encourages them to get their sillies out as well as the the climbing structure which encourages a sense of freedom and exploration.

Get off at the Hempstead stop and grab a quick cab ride to the museum.

photo: Railroad Museum of Long Island Facebook page

Railroad Museum of Long Island Long Island has a rich train history and you can learn all about it the the Railroad Museum. Kids can experience antique trains and ride the World’s Fair miniature train. (Don’t confuse this location with the Greenport location, which is not easily accessible via the LIRR.)

Take the train to the Riverhead Station. The Museum is directly across the way, going toward Griffing Avenue.

Shopaholic’s Heaven

Tanger Outlets – The Arches Need to load up on summer duds and supplies? The Tanger Outlets provide shoppers with an all-around experience. In addition to its many shops, the outlets are also home to a number of restaurants and cafes, as well as a movie theater.

Take the train to the Deer Park Station.

Roosevelt Field Mall A mall might not be the ideal place to spend a beautiful Spring day, but in case of rain, this mall is a great place bring the family for some retail fun. With tons of family-friendly restaurants and events for kids that include Easter Egg hunts and Build-A-Bear Workshops, Spring indoors can be fun, too!

photo: Long Island Brew Bus via Yelp

Best for a Day Without the Kids

L.I. Brew Bus Get off at the Ronkonkoma Station and start brewery hopping. With over 45 breweries on Long Island, this is a unique and ever-changing experience. Knowledgeable “Brew Guides” will entertain and educate you about the history and creation of beer. Learn the science of pairing beer with food, why the pint glass is so popular, and more. Call for reservations and find out where the L.I. Brew Bus is going this week!

photo: North Fork Wine Tours

North Fork Wine Tours Visit a winery (or three) in the North Fork. Check out liwines.com for more details on specific wineries and packages. It’s a great way to un-wine in a beautiful setting.

Take the train to Ronkonkoma and arrange for transportation to the wineries with by bus, taxi, or private car or limo.

Depart aboard our deluxe motorcoach for the Gold Coast of Long Island where New York’s elite built fabulous mansions & gardens. Visit COE HALL at Planting Fields, former home of insurance magnate William Robert Coe & Mai Rogers Coe, a Standard Oil heiress. One of the few remaining Gold Coast Estates, Coe Hall contains many original pieces & furnishings once belonging to the Coe family, including the restored Louis XVI Reception Room. Spend 2 nights at the HYATT PLACE EAST END in Riverhead, NY, a full service hotel featuring spacious guestrooms, restaurant, indoor pool and fitness center. Welcome dinner at the LONG ISLAND AQUARIUM. The dining tables are surrounded by various sea life exhibits, stroll around the indoor space of the aquarium where you can interact with the sting rays, view the variety of fish swimming in the lagoon, admire the 10,000 gallon living reef tank and walk through the shark tunnel.

We join our local guide for a GUIDED TOUR OF THE HAMPTONS. Travel through Southampton Village, the oldest English Settlement in New York State, former farmlands that is now the location of the estates of the rich and famous. Stop at America’s #1 Beach, Coopers Beach for a chance to stroll and enjoy the beauty of this famous playground of the wealthy residents. Explore Sag Harbor, once the center of the whaling industry and now the home of historic neighborhoods, fabulous yachts, excellent restaurants and wonderful shops. The tour continues to Sagaponack, America’s most expensive zip code as well as Bridgehampton and East Hampton, voted by National Geographic Magazine as one of the most beautiful Village’s in the United States. We return to our hotel this afternoon for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

We begin with a tour of the elegant VANDERBILT MANSION, 43 acre estate overlooking Northport Harbor and the Long Island Sound. This remarkable mansion offers an intimate look at the life of a privileged family from the Jazz Age through the Second World War. Visit OLD WESTBURY GARDENS for a GUIDED TOUR OF THE MANSION & THE GARDENS, set on 160 pastoral acres and considered one of the most beautiful English style country estates in North America. Head home with great memories of our Long Island getaway.
