Renew an adult passport

Find out if you can renew your passport or have to get a new one. Learn how to renew your passport by mail or in person in an emergency.

Renew early. Passport processing times  vary. And some countries and airlines deny entry if your passport expires in less than 6 months.

Determine if you can renew your passport

If any of the following are true, you cannot renew your U.S. passport and must instead apply for a new passport in person using Form DS-11:

  • Issued before your 16th birthday
  • Issued more than 15 years ago
  • Damaged, lost, or stolen. Learn how to report a lost or stolen passport.
  • Issued in your previous name, and you do not have a legal document like a marriage license to prove your legal name change

If none of the above situations are true, you can renew your U.S. passport.

How to renew your passport and documents you will need

Passports can only be renewed by mail. Online renewals are currently paused. Because it can take up to three months to process your application, it is important to renew your passport before it expires.

Typically, you will need the following items to renew your passport:

  • You can fill out Form DS-82 online , or
  • Download Form DS-82 and fill it out by hand, or
  • Find your local passport acceptance facility or regional agency and pick up a copy.
  • Passport photo
  • Passport fee
  • Your most recent passport
  • Name change documentation, if necessary

Learn how to submit all your documentation and passport fees by mail.

Check with the Department of State to find out the current processing times for passport renewals .

If you need your passport quickly

Learn how and where to get your passport fast for emergency or urgent travel or to get expedited processing. The time it takes for each varies throughout the year, and there may be additional fees. Use the fee calculator or chart.

If you are outside the U.S.

Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate near you to request a passport while outside the U.S.

If you need to change your name or correct your passport

After you receive your renewed passport, if you change your name or find an error, you will need to get an updated one to reflect the change. The process, cost, and forms you need depend on how long you have had your current passport. Follow the steps from the State Department to change your name or correct your passport.

Check the status of your passport renewal

Learn how to check the status of your passport renewal online . Or check its status by phone (call wait times may be long).

Be aware of passport expiration rules for your destination

Some countries and airlines will not allow a U.S. passport holder to enter if their passport expires in less than 6 months.

Check your destination country's U.S. passport expiration rules on the  Department of State's country information page .

  • On the left, search for the country name in the "learn about your destination" box.
  • On that country's page, look for "passport validity."

Paid parking season is back in Newport. What will it cost and how you can pay.

The City of Newport’s paid parking and residential sticker programs return on May 1.

Here's a look at what you need to know.

How much does it cost to park in Newport?

Metered parking, which features the use of multi-space parking kiosks, will be in effect from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily, including weekends and holidays. Hourly rates will remain at $1.25 per hour downtown and $2 per hour along Memorial Boulevard by Easton’s Beach. The 2024 rates will mirror rates from 2023.

Is there an app to pay for parking in Newport?

Motorists using the City’s paid parking spaces are encouraged to pay directly from their smartphone by downloading the Passport Mobile App at  www.CityofNewport.com/Parking , or by searching for the Passport App on their mobile device’s app store.

Once the application is downloaded, users are asked to create an account, select the zone number that is posted on nearby signage and enter the vehicle license plate number. Users can then view their parking history and extend their sessions with the tap of a button. All City pay stations accept credit cards or coins, with the minimum payment for credit cards set at one hour. Parking kiosks located at the Touro Street Lot and Long Wharf Lot, as well as at 40 Steps on Narragansett Avenue accept credit cards, coins and bills.

Can Newport residents park for free?

Once again Newport residents will be eligible for free 2-hour parking at all metered spaces.

Newport residents will once again be granted three free hours of parking at the Mary Street Parking Lot, which operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week as a self-pay lot with rates of $3 per hour and $20 per day. Pay stations are located in the center of the lot adjacent to the restroom and accept cash or credit cards.

Are there rates for downtown employees?

Daily parking rates for downtown employees will remain capped at $6 per day and $5 for non-profit employees at the Gateway Center for all who take advantage of the City's discount employee parking program. For more information on how to apply, visit www.CityofNewport.com/Parking .

How much does it cost to park at the Gateway Visitor’s Center Parking Lot?

Parking fees will also be in effect at the Gateway Visitor’s Center Parking Lot as of May 1. Parking rates there are $5 per hour, billed in 30-minute increments. Weekly and monthly rates are also available.

Elsewhere, the City’s residential sticker parking program will also go into effect on May 1 and run through Oct. 1. Visitors are reminded that parking throughout the City’s residential neighborhoods may be restricted to vehicles displaying residential parking permits, and general visitor pass, or temporary residential parking permit. Motorists are asked to please take note of posted signage before parking. More information about the City’s residential parking program can be found in Chapter 10.32 of the City’s Code of Ordinances, which is available on the City’s website. For specific questions concerning the City’s parking lots and metered parking, contact the Transportation Supervisor at 401-845-5712.

Los angeles chargers | nfl draft: chargers trade up to take wr ladd mcconkey in 2nd round, mcconkey, from georgia, will be a key addition to a thin wide receiver corps that lost veterans keenan allen and mike williams as cap casualties last month.

my travel pass newport

COSTA MESA — The Chargers got their wide receiver, after all.

They traded up to select wide receiver Ladd McConkey of the University of Georgia with the 34th selection in the NFL draft on Friday, swapping two picks with the New England Patriots. The Chargers got the 34th and 137th selections and sent the Patriots the 37th and 110th picks.

McConkey will be a key addition to a thin wide receiver corps that lost veterans Keenan Allen and Mike Williams as salary cap casualties last month. Allen, who set a franchise record for receptions in the 2023 season, was traded to the Chicago Bears. Williams, coming off a knee injury, was released.

Instead of selecting a wide receiver in the first round Thursday, the Chargers opted to pick Joe Alt, a left tackle from Notre Dame. They could have drafted any one of a number of standout receivers, including Malik Nabers of LSU or Rome Odunze of the University of Washington.

The Chargers wasted zero time pursuing a receiver in the second round, though.

“We were talking about him (Friday),” Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz said of McConkey. “We were watching some film on him. That’s one of the things that pops on film about him, just how good he is, how he sets up routes. The quarterback knows where he’s going to be.”

McConkey, listed at 6-foot and 185 pounds, caught 30 passes for 478 yards, an average of 15.9 yards per catch, and two touchdowns in eight games last season for the Bulldogs. He is said to be a strong route runner with good speed, capable of breaking routine pass plays for long gains.

McConkey’s versatility was one of the things that attracted the Chargers to him. He often lined up as an outside receiver while at Georgia, but he also could be used as a slot receiver with the Chargers. He also could return punts, although wide receiver Derius Davis filled that role last season.

“They have a great offense, great quarterback,” McConkey said, referring to Justin Herbert. “I’m just excited to get out there and meet all of the guys and get to work, honestly. … Just watching (Herbert’s) game, it comes easy to him. He can make any and every throw. I’m excited to get there, get in rhythm with him, show what I can do and gain his trust.”

The Chargers next took Michigan linebacker Junior Colson in the third round (69th overall), filling a need at the position with one of Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh’s former Wolverines. Colson was a key player on Michigan’s undefeated national championship team in 2023.

“Man, everything, man,” Colson said of reuniting with Harbaugh. “I went to Michigan for a reason, and he was that reason. He picked me again. I believe I’ll fit into (the defensive scheme) very easily. It’ll be easy to get in and get to work … and compete for a starting spot right away.”

Colson said he anticipated battling for and winning a starting spot.

“Yes, sir,” he said. “I feel I can be a starter. I’m ready for it.”

Colson also will be reunited with Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who held the same job with Michigan before joining Harbaugh in Los Angeles. In addition, new Chargers linebackers coach NaVorro Bowman also coached Colson at Michigan before following Harbaugh.

Bowman joined the beat writers’ Zoom call with Colson, politely interrupting the question-and-answer session to tell his former and perhaps future standout linebacker, “I stood on the table from Day 1 for you.” Said Colson: “I’m already on my way, let’s make it happen.”

The draft concludes Saturday at 9 a.m. (PT) with the fourth through seventh rounds conducted. The Chargers have six picks remaining, including two each in the fifth and seventh rounds. Their final selections are Nos. 105, 137, 140, 181, 225 and 253 overall.
