6. WHERE TO STAY NEAR SANTA'S VILLAGE?

If you’d like to be as close as possible to Santa Claus Village, the best place to stay is Rovaniemi. Here you have everything you need: an international airport, shops, restaurants, and more.

In Rovaniemi, you could either base yourself in the town centre, or in the scenic countryside just outside of it.

For the quintessential wintry experience, opt for a stay in a cosy cottage or log cabin. Imagine being snuggled up inside by the fireplace, with views of the snow-laden scenery outside your window.

Another option is to stay in Kemi. Come here for a Christmas or New Year’s break and enjoy festive activities, including a day trip to Santa Claus Village. The journey takes 1 hour 30 minutes each way.

How about spending the night in a room made of ice and snow? You can do just that at the Arctic SnowHotel in Rovaniemi and SnowCastle in Kemi.

These are two of the best ice hotels in Finland , where you can sleep in a frozen chamber. They also have glass igloos and villas if you’d prefer to have views of the stars (and northern lights, should they appear!).

Check out these Lapland ice and snow hotel packages , or learn more about accommodation in Lapland on our travel guide.

7. CAN YOU SEE NORTHERN LIGHTS FROM LAPLAND?

Lapland is one of the top places in Europe to see the northern lights . The region is ideally situated within the Arctic Circle, which is where you have the best chance of seeing the aurora borealis most vividly.

Another thing to note is that Lapland lies within the “aurora zone” (or “northern lights belt”), located between 65-72°N. This means that Lapland experiences intense auroral frequency.

Take a look at these Lapland northern lights packages to start planning your aurora-hunting tour.

8. WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT LAPLAND?

The best time to visit Lapland is in winter. Go between December and March to enjoy the stunning snowy landscapes. You’ll get to make the most of outdoor activities that you can only do at this time of year.

Although it snows in Lapland between October and April, it is a real winter wonderland from December to March. This is because the snow is thick, allowing you to go dog sledding, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing, to name a few.

What’s more, visiting Lapland in winter gives you the best opportunities to see the northern lights. At this time of year, the night skies are really dark, which means you can make out the colours of the aurora more clearly.

In summer, daylight hours are long and the night skies never get completely dark. This makes it too tricky to spot the aurora borealis because conditions are too bright.

For more information, discover the  best time and place to see the northern lights in Finland on our experts’ blog. Or check out when to go by month:

• Lapland in December • Lapland in January • Lapland in February • Lapland in March

9. HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED IN LAPLAND?

We suggest you take a few days for your winter getaway to Lapland. A short break lasting less than a week, but more than a long weekend, is ideal.

Nordic Visitor’s Santa Claus Village tours range from 4 to 5 days. This gives you time to enjoy a variety of activities and soak up the magical atmosphere.

Get insider advice and itinerary suggestions for 4-day holidays in Lapland or 5-day trips to Lapland .

10. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

All of our tours are available to reserve online, so you can select your start dates here. Please bear in mind that some accommodation in Lapland, such as the Arctic SnowHotel, is in demand, so it’s best you book as soon as possible.

Another thing to note is that certain Lapland packages have set start dates. For example, if you opt for a Christmas tour or New Year’s package, you will begin your trip in the days leading up to 24 or 31 December.

11. CAN I CUSTOMISE MY TOUR?

Yes, you can add some personal customisations to your tour.

Although our travel experts created these itineraries to showcase the best attractions and activities, you can still make your experience even more special by adding extras. Personalise your trip with northern lights tours and upgrades to ice hotels or glass igloos.

To customise your trip, you can either book online and add optional extras during the booking steps, or contact your dedicated travel consultant. You could also request extra days in Lapland, and include more destinations such as Helsinki and Stockholm on your tour.

All you need to do is decide which Lapland holiday package is right for you, then contact your consultant about personalising it. We want you to have an incredible time in Lapland and we’re happy to tailor your tour where we can, so that you go home with unforgettable memories.

12. WHEN SHOULD I ORGANISE MY FLIGHTS?

Wait until your Nordic Visitor holiday package is confirmed before you book your flights. This is because certain activities and accommodation (such as the Arctic SnowHotel) have limited spaces. That's why it’s best to have all your tickets and tours secured before you purchase flights.

Once you’ve received all of your itinerary information from your travel consultant, you’ll be able to book the most suitable flights for your trip. Do check flight times and dates beforehand, to see what’s available.

If you have any questions, you can always contact your travel consultant for advice.

13. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO LAPLAND?

You need to prepare for the cold weather if you’re travelling to Lapland in winter. Dress warmly and wear sensible walking shoes or boots with good grip.

When you pack for your Lapland tour and Santa Claus Village visit, we recommend that you bring plenty of cosy jumpers. Make sure you have winter accessories with you, like scarves, hats and gloves.

Outerwear is provided on outdoor excursions, but do bring an extra coat just in case you want another layer.

Here is a suggested packing list for your Lapland trip:

  • Thick woollen socks
  • Thermal base layers
  • Warm woollen jumpers
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Snowproof jacket or coat
  • Thin wool or fleece gloves (ideal as a base layer under snowmobile gloves)
  • Thick gloves, scarf and hat
  • Small rucksack
  • Heat pads for hands and feet
  • Power adaptors with two round prongs (Europlug Type C and F)

the exterior of the Santa Claus village

Santa Claus Village opened just outside Rovaniemi, Finland, in 1985.

Visit Santa's 'real' village on the Arctic Circle

In 1927, Finland claimed to discover Santa's workshop.

Everyone knows the basics about Santa, the jolly man in a red suit that delivers gifts at Christmas. How a small town near the Arctic Circle in Finland became known as his “official hometown” proves a less familiar twist to the story.

Santa was a marketing gimmick, based on a third-century, ancient bishop from Turkey known for secretly giving away his large inheritance. His random acts of kindness didn’t go unnoticed, earning sainthood and global celebration on the date of his death, December 6. This story of Saint Nicolas then traveled with Dutch immigrants to the US, where "Sinterklaas" was moulded into the visual image of Santa we all recognize today. Without much of a backstory to Santa Claus, an illustration in Harpers magazine from 1866 is credited with establishing the legend of his home at the “North Pole.” [ Read more about the history of Santa Claus. ]

In 1927, Markus Rautio –a Finnish radio broadcaster known as “Uncle Marcus”–claimed on-air that Santa's workshop was discovered in in Rovaniemi, Finland. The government of the province, Lapland, declared itself “Santa Claus Land” decades later to boost tourism. Santa Claus Village opened just outside Rovaniemi in 1985.

Of course there are other places that lay claim to a Santa or Saint Nick association: Korvatunturi, Finland, claims to be his real home and that Rovaniemi was just created for tourists. The Church of Saint Nicolas in Demre, Turkey, contains his sarcophagus but not his bones. There's a multitude of pop-ups around the world, but the Santa in Rovaniemi differs in that the man is marketed as the original, and tourists can visit him throughout the year.

a man dressed as Santa Claus in the Santa Claus Village in Finland

Santa is available for photos–for a cost.

Christmas lasts all year around in Rovaniemi, a place of anticipation. Even the hardcore cynic will be moved by the "Christmas Spirit." After visiting Santa, families can dine in the snowglobe atmosphere of the Ice Restaurant and Ice Bar in Snowman World . Leaving from the Elf's Yard, kids can cross the Arctic Circle with traditional Lappish wooden skis. The region forms part of the natural habitat for roaming reindeer–unlike the North Pole.

Santa Claus’s Main Post Office, with a special Arctic Circle stamp, received about half a million letters last year. In reality, this figure is much higher since post offices around the world have their own systems of dealing with letters addressed to Santa. Santa in Rovaniemi received 18 million letters from 199 different countries to date, and at Christmastime, can receive 32,000 letters per day, with the most letters arriving from China.

An official reply from Santa Claus will set people back more than 10 dollars (8.90 euros). It is free to see him, but tourists can't take photos or videos, although you can buy the official one. In high season (November through March), prices reach more than 50 dollars (45 euros).

There are no detailed statistics on how many people visit Santa Claus, however, during the busiest days he meets thousands of people. Last year, 520,000 people visited Santa Claus Village. Many tour operators offer seasonal charter flights to Rovaniemi, mainly during the Christmas and winter season.

Santa in Lapland is heavily marketed and protected. The overall image of Santa retained the goodness that Saint Nicolas was known for, but there are other qualities that perpetuate his continued growth. "We live in a commercial world based on consumption. Santa is a representation, or signifier, of that. We might indeed say he is the apotheosis of consumption, a true figure of the 21st century," says Michael Pretes , a professor of geography at the University of North Alabama.

He is something to latch on to, even during difficult times, Pretes continues: "Santa Claus is a stable figure—he never changes. He is jolly and generous. He doesn’t seem to have any bad qualities that we know of. This is all part of his universal appeal. What’s not to like about Santa Claus?"

Brand expert Eric Schulz believes it is also down to nostalgia. "Santa is a strong brand due to the positive emotions he evokes. We all crave happiness in our lives, and Santa is a reminder of that time in our own lives when we believed in the magic of the holiday season and Santa bringing us gifts. This is a timeless tradition that has been handed down generation to generation and will last forever."

What it's like to take a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Finland’s Arctic to see Santa

Summer Hull

In northern Finland, tucked beneath the snow-covered trees, you'll find reindeer-led sleighs, elves, kid-size snowmobiles, glass domes made for viewing the northern lights and ... Santa's cottage.

From the moment the playful (and sometimes naughty) elves greet you in Ivalo, Finland, to when they lead you in Christmas songs on buses as you make your way to the Lapland region to meet Santa, this trip embraces all things Christmas in a way that even Buddy the Elf would appreciate.

I would know, as my family and I went all in on the magic and booked a package to see Santa in northern Finland last year. The journey to find Santa not only ticked off a once-in-a-lifetime experience my kids will cherish forever, but it also helped bring some of the holiday magic back that had been missing throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

If you're hoping to embark on this incredible adventure to the Lapland region of Finland to come face-to-face with Santa, here are five things you need to know.

It's breathtakingly beautiful

This part of the world may be remote, harsh and unforgiving, but it is also truly magnificent in a way that takes your (frozen) breath away.

During the winter holidays, it never gets truly bright, but the midday twilight shining on a blanket of white snow is something straight out of a storybook you have to see for yourself.

north pole santa trip

Whether you personally go in search of Santa or just want to experience a place that looks so magical you'll find it hard to believe it's real, you'll love exploring this part of the Arctic.

north pole santa trip

We found it every bit as mesmerizing as we'd hoped. From reindeer sleigh rides to dog sledding, we saw and did things that took us very outside our comfort norms ... in a good way. It was like we were living in a fairy tale flanked with fur and elves.

north pole santa trip

You can visit on your own or through a packaged tour

It's possible to head to one of the cities or villages that Santa frequents in the Lapland region of Finland without being on an organized tour, but if you want to hit the easy button on planning, a tour may be the simplest solution.

We went with Santa's Lapland , which offers three- and four-day trips from the United Kingdom to Finland.

While these packages are quite pricey (prepare yourself for sticker shock), know that the trip does include charter flights from the U.K., lodging and ground transfers in Finland, all meals (except a few lunches), the use of thermal snow gear and a number of winter activities — such as dog sled rides, reindeer sleigh rides and snowmobiling. Most importantly, you'll also have the chance to hunt for Santa's hidden house.

You can book a couple of add-on activities such as northern lights-viewing excursions and snowshoeing to enhance your experience, but given how busy your trip will be with all the inclusions, you may want to refrain from packing your visit with many extra adventures. We added several activities to our trip, and while they were enjoyable, if I had to do it again, I would only tack on a few hours of a skiing session since the slopes are close by.

In total, our three-night "Santa's Aurora" journey for two adults and two kids required paying a little less than 6,000 pounds (or nearly $7,000) before we added on extra activities, which cost between 25 pounds ($28) and 114 pounds ($128) per person. To save some money, consider choosing one of the more affordable two-day packages, which start around 1,100 pounds ($1,234) per adult, with reduced rates available for children.

north pole santa trip

If shelling out thousands of dollars for a package doesn't sound like the right option for you, know that planning your own adventure is also an option. This is what I'd do to save money the next time around.

Rather than book a package, I'd likely connect through Helsinki and target Rovaniemi, Finland, as our final destination. Like last time, I would use ANA miles to fly business class to Europe and back for 88,000 miles per ticket. You can transfer miles to ANA from American Express' Membership Rewards program , making this option possible for those with cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express .

Should you decide to take this route, you can then hop aboard the overnight Santa Claus Express train to complete the 12-hour journey from Helsinki to Rovaniemi. While there are more budget-friendly standard seats available, I'd suggest paying a little more for a cabin, as they have beds, with some also offering private bathrooms.

Once in Rovaniemi, you can pursue whichever winter activities are most appealing to you. Several operators are available for dog sledding excursions, northern lights outings and more. They can fill up fast, though, so be sure to schedule your preferred activities as far in advance as possible.

The experience is unlike anything else

If you do decide to purchase a package to see Santa in Finland, be ready to truly go all in for a few days. From the moment you arrive to the day you depart, you'll be aware of what time of year it is and who you're in town to see.

Transportation

When we boarded the included Jet2holidays plane for our charter flight to Finland from the U.K., it was clear this was far from an ordinary flight. Lightning on the plane was a deep red hue, and Christmas carols were sung at 36,000 feet.

north pole santa trip

When we landed in Finland and headed to baggage claim, we spotted naughty elves laughing and spinning around on baggage carts as they sneakily sent our bags back on the belt and out of our sight.

In the ensuing days, they would throw snowballs, mess with people's hats and cause a lot of trouble — but it was always in good fun. So long as you lean into this Christmas chaos, you'll fully enjoy the experience.

Located a bit away from town but right on the slopes of Saariselkä, Europe's northernmost ski resort , Star Arctic Hotel is an ideal place for outdoorsy types.

There are a few different lodging options, two of which we tried out during our stay.

For the first night of our visit, we slept in a spectacular Aurora Glass Cabin that had several windows for viewing the northern lights. Luck was not on our side, as the northern lights did not make an appearance for us, but we still enjoyed waking up to an unobstructed view of the snowy landscape.

north pole santa trip

After our brief stint in a cabin, we moved to a suite with a sauna for the remainder of our stay. It was a little tight for the four of us, but it did the trick. The private sauna inside our suite was a terrific place to unwind after an active day in the cold.

Dog sledding and snowmobiling

When I first heard that our package included dog sledding, I assumed we'd be passengers riding along tucked under the blankets with an experienced guide at the helm. Wow, was I wrong.

north pole santa trip

Instead of being chauffeured around like you would in upscale winter destinations like Aspen or Vail, Colorado , we were in the driver's seat ... literally. After a brief lesson, I took the reins and steered myself and my daughter down the snowy trails. It was equal parts terrifying and exhilarating

Other activities here are also incredibly immersive, making them that much more fun (and wilder) to partake in.

For our snowmobiling adventure, we did not simply head out on full-size snowmobiles with the kids in a separate cart being pulled along. We had the opportunity to give my 6-year-old a chance to get in on the action and drive a miniature snowmobile attached to a pole. It was a bucket list experience I'm certain my daughter will remember for the rest of her life.

Because we booked a Santa's Lapland package, all our meals were included with the exception of some lunches. Each was served buffet-style.

north pole santa trip

Overall, the food was fine, but it was not the highlight of our trip. There were chicken nuggets and french fries available for kids at most meals, but expect the bulk of the options to be more traditional Finnish dishes. Hopefully you like salmon, as it's a regular fixture on the buffet.

If you have picky eaters in your crew, double-check the menus in advance, pack snacks and maybe make a grocery store run to ensure they have everything they need to stay content at mealtime.

The shared experience

Booking a packaged tour means that you're going to be around other families for several days. So, pack a little patience and understanding, as you may come across a strong personality or two in your group.

north pole santa trip

For the most part, this wasn't a huge deal for us, as we were all just thrilled to be somewhere so special.

Regardless of what language our companions spoke or where they came from, it was clear that everyone understood how unique of an opportunity a trip like this was. They were just as eager to savor as many seconds of the experience as we were.

You'll meet the man of the season

Traveling to Finland's Lapland region will not only bring you up close to Santa's house. You'll also get a chance to see Santa for yourself.

At the end of a reindeer-led sleigh ride through the snow on our last full day, we came upon some elves at an adorable red hut hidden in the trees.

I'm not sure if the elves were really thrilled that we happened upon such a special spot in the magical woods, but they readily welcomed us in all the same.

After missing seeing Santa in person in 2020 and traveling thousands of miles to try and find him in 2021, it was quite the experience to be welcomed into his cozy cottage.

He was as kind as you'd expect. Somehow, he had the letters the kids sent to him weeks earlier, a personalized touch that added an extra bit of magic to an already magical experience.

It's really, really cold in the Arctic

While Santa's cottage is warm and cozy, the outdoors is a different story. Despite the abundance of snow shown in photos, it's not until you step foot in northern Finland that you realize just how chilly it is.

Temperatures hovered around 0 degrees Fahrenheit during much of our late-November visit. In fact, it was so cold that just walking two minutes across the parking lot to the reception area's restaurant was about all we could do without getting in full thermal gear.

north pole santa trip

While you may worry about all the gear required to stay warm, know that some essentials will be provided once you arrive — if you book an organized tour.

Be sure to pack good base layers and comfortable clothes to layer under the clunky thermal suits you'll receive from your tour guide. You'll also want to bring glove liners, hats, thick wool socks and neck warmers.

north pole santa trip

Even with the provided gear plus the layers brought from home, it's still really cold at times (especially when the wind gets going) — but don't let it stop you from having fun. Once bundled up, the temperatures were doable for periods of time — even for my 6-year-old.

north pole santa trip

Still, know that your hair and eyelashes will feel frozen (and may look that way in photos), as anything exposed for any length of time will become seriously chilled in a hurry.

Bottom line

We've skied in Canada , visited Alaska and even explored Norway , but nothing quite compares to the experience of meeting Santa in his snowy home in the woods.

Every family trip is special and memorable in its own way, but after the couple of years we've had and the things we've all missed out on, this first big trip post-pandemic was truly unforgettable. Visiting the Lapland region of Finland was so different and unique that it is forever etched in our collective story banks.

You don't have to go all the way to the Arctic to find holiday magic, but if you do decide to make the trip, whether on your own or through a package tour, you'll likely walk away with many memories to last a lifetime.

Visit Santa Claus in Lapland

You are here.

Have you ever dreamed of visiting the magical homeland of Santa Claus and his helpers in the North Pole? Lapland trips to see Santa are bucket list journeys of thousands of adults and children around the world. Let’s find out more about the magical experience.

Trips to see Santa in Lapland

Located in the city of Rovaniemi , Finland, the official Santa Claus Residence is open all year round and annually welcomes hundreds of guests who travel to Lapland to see Santa.

Of course, Christmas Santa trips at the end of December are the most popular time of the year to go there with the highest demand. For this reason, in order to avoid little or no availability or sky-rocket prices during this season, it is recommended to book trips to visit Santa as early in advance as possible.

The Santa Village boasts a large territory and is made up of numerous buildings and areas. The holiday spirit is all around, starting from Santa’s office, where you can meet the honoree.

A husky dog-sledding through a beutiful winter forest

There’s also a husky park offering sled rides onsite, a couple of restaurants, a snowmobile park, the legendary icy Snowman World, several unique hotels, as well as the popular Santa post office, from which you can send a letter or postcard back home or to your friends from the North Pole.

Of course, holidays to Lapland to meet Santa don't stop at that as here you can also meet his charming reindeer, a character that we can't imagine a proper winter fairytale without.

Those who prefer to stay right by the village sometimes choose several one-of-a-kind nearby options, for instance, glass igloos with panoramic roofs for watching Northern Lights or the unique Treehouse hotel.

And as for getting there, one of the most popular ways to reach the destination apart from flights is taking the Santa Claus Express train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi. The train itself isn't themed but carries the name due to its scenic route from the capital city all the way above the Arctic Circle.

How I Spent $480 In 48 Hours In Lapland, Finland (Aka The North Pole)

Because you’re never too old to live out your Frozen dreams.

Northern Lights , reindeer, and the home of Santa Claus — there’s something magical about Lapland that makes you want to “Let It Go.” The real-life North Pole — the sparsely populated northern region around the Arctic Circle that encompasses Finland, Sweden, Norway, and parts of Russia — is a rural wilderness, but Lapland’s festive capital, Rovaniemi, has developed a bustling tourism scene. Not only do families visit hoping to meet Mr. Claus, but adventure experiences like snowmobiling, ice fishing, and husky rides also make this trip one to remember.

I love Rovaniemi so much that I’ve visited this area three times, and I am planning a fourth trip. Winter in New York City is dark, slushy, and cold, but in Finland, somehow, cold feels different. Sure, it’s dark as you head to breakfast at 9 a.m. and the sun starts setting at 2 p.m., but those hours of daylight feel surreal. You’ll catch the sun glinting on the snow in a certain way, or you’ll see the beautiful orange streaks of a sunrise or sunset, and it just makes you happy. There’s also something so cozy about it being pitch black at 5 p.m. It makes you want to snuggle up, drink a warm beverage, and sit by the fire.

Visiting Lapland is a once-in-a-lifetime trip that can be $$$, but it’s so worth it. It’s also a different kind of vacation than other weekend getaways. For one, don’t worry about your wardrobe. What you need are layers — plenty of them. The first time I went, the trip made me realize the value of dressing appropriately for the weather. (Life is so much better when you’re not shivering in a barely there moto jacket.) Another thing to note: The food scene in Rovaniemi isn’t exactly bustling. (According to TripAdvisor, one of the recommended restaurants near Santa Claus Village is the gas station.) You’re going more for the vibes. So buckle up, pack some snacks, put on a (super toasty) wool hat, and let’s head north to Rovaniemi for a weekend.

Sledges and reindeers of the Santa Claus Reindeer company at the Santa's Village in the Arctic Circl...

Day 1: Friday

7 a.m.: arrive in rovaniemi.

You can fly into Rovaniemi from the Finland capital of Helsinki, but IMO, it’s more fun — and cheaper — to take the sleeper train there. (Rates begin around $55 per person, one way.) The train cars have the option of a private cabin, including showers, and have fast WiFi; meal delivery; and a chance to kick back, watch the scenery, and sleep. By the time you wake up, you’ll be in a winter wonderland.

8 a.m.: Check into your hotel in Santa Claus Village

There are a lot of hotels in Santa Claus Village, and staying on property can be the best way to experience everything Rovaniemi has to offer (plus you can walk to everything). The last two times, I sprang for a glass roof igloo accommodation within Santa’s Village. It was expensive, but the igloo came with an in-room sauna , plus an alarm system that would go off when the Northern Lights came out. Seeing the Northern Lights from your bed was next level.

You likely won’t be able to check in to your hotel yet, but you can drop your bags. Once you’re luggage-free, get in line to meet Santa at the Santa Claus office . Forget about all your other Santa experiences, forget about your age — this guy is legit. Lines get long, so do this early. You can DIY your photos for a free experience.

Cost: Uber one way to Santa Claus Village: $15

The Santa’s igloo hotel in Rovaniemi is the best place to see the northern lights.

Take some photos crossing the Arctic Circle, which is right in the center of Santa’s Village. It’s a line on the map, and the actual sign is NBD, but entering the land of the midnight sun is something cool to check off your bucket list. You can also head to the nearby Christmas House , where there’s another Santa Claus (don’t overthink it), and take some photos there.

10 a.m.: Get an authentic Finnish breakfast

You’re probably starving. Walk back to the Christmas House breakfast buffet , which is at the entrance to Santa Claus Village. Finnish breakfasts are hearty and offer plenty of savory options, including salmon, meatballs, and cheese plates.

Petting the alpacas in Rovaniemi, Finland.

11 a.m.: Cozy up to some reindeer with s’mores

After breakfast, walk to the Elf’s Farmyard in Santa Claus Village. Pet alpacas, say hi to reindeer, and warm up in the authentic kota (Finnish hut) around the fire. If you’re craving something sweet, buy some marshmallows at the Elf Farmyard store and have s’mores.

12 p.m.: Try out the sauna at your hotel and nap

Head back to your hotel. Most hotel rooms in Finland have a sauna, and after the cold, there’s nothing like stripping down and getting sweaty. If you’re feeling brave, try running out into the cold (roll in the snow if you’re extra brave) and then hopping back into the sauna. This is also the perfect time to sneak in a nap before all the night activities.

Tourists enjoying a reindeer ride arranged by Santa Claus Reindeer company at the Santa's Village in...

4 p.m.: Head out for your Northern Lights Hunting Tour

You’ve woken up from your nap, and it’s pitch black. Welcome to Lapland. Now, it’s time to head on an excursion. From snowmobile safaris chasing the Northern Lights to authentic Lapland sauna and ice swimming experiences to midnight visits with reindeer, the easiest way to experience the Finnish wilderness is to go with a tour group. You won’t get lost, and you’ll also be able to get the best pics.

It’s a good idea to do some research before you head to Rovaniemi. There are plenty of tours that take day-of reservations, but planning can help you find the best one. The tours can get pretty pricey, so just choose one or two that sound great and fit your budget.

One option I recommend is the Northern Lights Hunting Tour. Hop in a van and head to the best locations in the area to find the Northern Lights. These tours include snacks, plus time sitting around the fire and sharing stories with your fellow travelers.

Alternative 1: Take a Night Snowmobile Safari

If you don’t mind spending a bit more, you can also drive through the forests and look for the Northern Lights. You need a valid driver’s license, and prices are for two adults to share a snowmobile.

Alternative 2: Do a Lapland sauna, swimming, and Northern Lights adventure

The sauna in Lapland is part of the Northern Lights excursion.

This option is a bit more expensive, but it’s one I recommend for anyone who wants something different. This experience drives you to a remote forest cottage. (I know, it sounds like the start of a horror movie, but hear me out.) There’s an authentic Finnish sauna onsite, alongside a pristine Arctic lake. They teach you the right way to sauna (warm up in the dry sauna before pouring water on rocks to create steam), and the juxtaposition of the warm sauna and the freezing lake feels amazing. Looking up at the stars and glimpsing the Northern Lights as you dunk yourself in water surrounded by ice is surreal. Plus, the experience comes with an authentic and delicious salmon dinner.

Total for Day 1: $190

Day 2: Saturday

7 a.m.: fuel up with a finnish pastry.

Take the free shuttle bus to the Rovaniemi town center. Head to Espresso House (the Starbucks of Lapland), and get a Christmas latte with a frosty winterbun as well as some snacks for later.

8 a.m.: Hit the road

Santa Claus Village and its offerings are great, but the best way to experience Lapland is to DIY. In other words, it’s time to rent a car. While conditions can be snowy, the roads are relatively straight and kept clear, and all cars have four-wheel drive. Watch out for reindeer, and you’re good to go.

Cost: Rental car from Sixt, Rovaniemi City Center, $60

Fog over snowy trees at sunset, winter landscape, Pyhä-Luosto National Park, Lapland, Finland

11 a.m.: Grab some snacks and explore Lapland by going on a winter wonderland hike

There are plenty of trails, hikes, and national parks in Lapland, ranging from gentle walks to intense all-day cardiofests. Many protected forest areas have kotas — Lappish huts — complete with firewood. One good destination to check out is Pyhä-Luosto National Park . You can rent snowshoes if you’re feeling adventurous, or just wander around and enjoy the scenery.

Cost: $20 for snacks

Alternative: Dig for gems

If you’re looking for something a little different and you’re willing to spend a bit more, drive to Luosto (about an hour and a half) to get to the Lampivaara Amethyst Mine . The Amethyst Mine gives you a chance to mine your own authentic Finnish amethyst. You also get a ton of photo opps along the way, as well as a ride in a special XXL snow vehicle. Hungry after your adventure? There’s a cafe connected to the mine, with doughnuts, coffee, fresh pastries, and a roaring outdoor fire to keep you cozy.

Cost: $100 per person

4 p.m.: Head on an afternoon tour to visit a reindeer farm

reindeer in Lapland, Rovaniemi, Finland.

Drive to Jaakkola reindeer farm and visit with authentic Lapland reindeer. Visits start at $30, but you can add on activities, including a reindeer safari, dinner, and even ice fishing.

Alternative 1: Eat at the ice restaurant

Another option (if you don’t mind paying a bit more) is eating inside a restaurant made of ice (keep your coat on!) at the Arctic Snow Hotel . The prix fixe menu includes roast elk, salmon, chicken, or tofu. After, head to the Ice Bar and have a drink. Once you’re done, smash your glass against the wall. Why can’t you do that at more bars?

Cost: Entrance to ice hotel $20 + prix fixe dinner $80 + drink $20 = $120

Alternative 2: Do a Northern Lights reindeer hunt

A reindeer mounted in front of a sledge looking as a sledge-lender waits for customers in the Santa ...

Didn’t see the Northern Lights last night? No worries. Another option is trying to find them while on the back of a reindeer-pulled sleigh . This Northern Lights tour includes a Finnish barbeque, reindeer petting, and feeding reindeer their favorite snack — moss.

8 p.m.: Grab a quick meal and go to bed — because it’s dark

Sure, it’s 8 p.m., but it’s been dark for five hours. Drop off the rental car, grab an Uber or the free shuttle back to your hotel, and chill. Make sure you’ve downloaded a Northern Lights app so you can be alerted if any Aurora activity happens while you’re inside.

Cost: $15 for snacks

Total for Day 2: $143

9 a.m.: Visit Santa, Round 2

It’s your last day in Lapland, so it’s a great day to do one final walk through Santa Claus Village, grab photos with reindeer, grab a quick breakfast, and stock up on souvenirs.

Cost: $20 for breakfast pastries and coffee

10 a.m.: Live out your Frozen fantasies in an ice-filled wonderland

Hit Snowman World. An attraction within Santa Claus Village, this winter wonderland features ice skating, sledding, and a DJ spinning tunes at an ice bar. It’ll make you feel like you’re visiting Arendelle IRL.

Cost: $32 per person

1 p.m.: Explore and shop Rovaniemi

Grab your bags and head into Rovaniemi town via the complimentary shuttle bus from Santa’s Village. You have a train to catch back to Helsinki in the evening, and these are your final hours to explore. Grab lunch in the Sampoketus Shopping Center in the center of town. It’s also a great place to warm up and grab souvenirs that are less expensive than anything you’ll find in Santa Claus Village.

One souvenir hit for all ages: Anything Moomin . This cute little creature is beloved in Finland, and you’ll find him and his friends everywhere, and on everything, from T-shirts to wine glasses.

3 p.m.: Visit the Arktikum Museum

This small, well-maintained museum highlights the life and environment of Lapland. My favorite exhibit is a nine-minute video called Polar Opposites , which is projected on the ceiling, with cushions angled on the floor for viewing. Take a nap; we won’t tell.

Cost: $20 per person

5 p.m.: Stock up on snacks

Head to the grocery store — any one will do — and stock up on Finnish snacks for your train ride home. Fun fact: Finnish grocery stores often have an entire wall of pick-your-own candy. Other Finnish treats to look for include nyhtökaura, a vegan oats and beans high protein combo; leipäjuusto, a squeaky cheese that tastes amazing with cloudberry jam; and korvapuusti, cinnamon buns.

7 p.m.: Head to the train station

Make your way to the train station, which is walkable from the center of the city. You’ll want to get there in plenty of time, so you can charge your electronics, buy any last-minute snacks, and get ready for your overnight train back to Helsinki.

Cost: $55 per person

Total for Day 3: $147

Total for the weekend: $480

Visit the Santa Claus House in North Pole Alaska

No visit to the North Pole would be complete without a visit to the iconic Santa Claus House , a true embodiment of Christmas spirit. Inside the Santa Claus House, visitors can meet the man himself, Santa (and sometimes Mrs. Claus, too), for a chat and a photo, as well as shop for holiday gifts, ornaments and memorabilia, and even purchase personalized letters from Santa for the well-behaved children in their lives.

You’ll actually see Santa’s presence long before you pull into the Santa Claus House parking lot at Santa Claus House with arguably the world’s largest Santa statue, complete with an abbreviated Naughty/Nice list looming over the property. Stand at his feet for a perfect pose – #SantaSelfie! It’s almost comical for summer visitors to take this image, sweating under the Interior’s very warm and very bright Midnight Sun, as the symbol of white Christmases and winter cheer stands over their shoulder. Nearby there’s even a pen of reindeer, who are clearly enjoying a relaxing life of carb-loading before their long night of flight on December 24.

Unleash Your Inner Child at Santa’s Workshop

Step into the world of imagination at Santa’s Workshop, where elves are busy crafting toys and preparing for Christmas. Let your inner child run wild as you explore the workshop and create your own Christmas-themed souvenir. Speaking of Christmas letters, hundreds of thousands of messages either addressed to Santa from children or requesting a North Pole postmark on cards from families and individuals arrive from around the world at the North Pole’s post office each year. Santa’s little helpers (community volunteers) do their jolly best to make sure every message gets a reply and/or the polar postmark.

Explore the Quirky Streets

Upon arriving, it doesn’t take long to realize this isn’t “Anytown”, U.S.A. North Pole’s quirky-name roadways including Santa Claus Lane, Mistletoe Lane, St. Nicholas Drive, Snowman Lane and Kris Kringle Drive have jumbo candy canes dangling along them, while some businesses and residences are also adorned with their festive finest. What else would you expect from a town that at one time ambitiously hoped to be a toy factory headquarters

Witness the Spectacle of North Pole’s Holiday Festival

Winter is when the North Pole truly lives up to its name. This town has a big holiday festival around Christmas time, complete with a tree lighting ceremony, mesmerising fireworks, and festive performances. That event certainly feels more like what you’d expect from a town called North Pole, as temps hover around zero.

Unwind at the Chena River and Chena Lakes

In the summer, the North Pole is warm and welcoming – an excellent destination for Alaska travelers who are looking for an easy-going place to pitch a tent or park an RV along the Chena River or at the nearby Chena Lakes, which are tranquil and excellent for recreational swimming, kayaking and fishing .

Admire the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and Witness the Majestic Wildlife

While Santa is North Pole’s unrivaled star resident, another icon passes through North Pole: the engineering marvel Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Consider booking a north pole tour from Fairbanks , which features a guided trip to the Museum of the North, Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and the north pole Santa Claus house.

For a glimpse into the Alaskan wildlife, embark on a wildlife viewing tour or simply venture into the surrounding forests, where moose, bears, and other creatures may make an appearance. The reindeer, however, are perfectly content to stay put at the Santa Claus House.

7 Magical Highlights of a Trip to the North Pole Alaska

Auroras, trip to the North Pole

It’s both fascinating and funny how some people have this burning desire to go and see what lies at the end of the Earth when many of us just want to snuggle in our blankets. If you are the former group of people then kudos to your grit for planning a trip to the North Pole .

The North Pole is much more than the hometown of Santa Claus where the feeling of Christmas stays throughout the year. You can call it ‘nature’s wonderland’ where everything is untouched and untamed color.

A trip to the North Pole will gain more popularity in the coming years as a tourist destination where people would want to go to unwind from the hustle-bustle of city life. It will blow your mind with all the unique things it has to offer and you will realize what you have been missing all your life.

Brace yourselves for the chilling details (throwing an extra blanket on myself). The North Pole has a “warmer” season which is in July when the temperature is 32℉ | 0℃ and the lowest temperature goes well below zero where you can actually experience chattering of your teeth.

Things to Look Forward to On Your Trip to the North Pole

The aurora borealis .

The Aurora Borealis, also called “ the Northern Lights ,” is nature’s own dancing light show. Here’s some geeky information if you’re curious as to how the Aurora Borealis phenomenon occurs.

The Sun’s electrically charged particles collide with Earth’s atmosphere, its particles, and gas resulting in this scintillating phenomenon. Just like your mood, the Auroras are never the same, and catching the Northern Lights are on many bucket lists.

You can plan your trip to the North Pole around the time when Northern Lights are easier to experience to take back a memory that will last a lifetime. If you get a chance to experience these, consider yourself both lucky and blessed.

The expedition team closely observes the polar conditions to select an appropriate time and place.

North Pole Trains are bound for Christmas across the USA and Canada

Ho ho ho! Who wouldn’t go? It may pull up to a holiday-trimmed depot caught in a swirl of snow — ease into a tropical station shaded with palms — or drive up to a desert platform amid sparkling drifts of sand. No matter the starting point, visitors all know they’re on track for a visit with Santa.

Where’s Santa? He could be at the station. He may be onboard the train. Or he might be at the end of the line… at the North Pole!

Most trains offer more than just a visit with the old elf. So don’t be surprised if you bump into Mrs Claus and elf or two… a talking snowman… or even a herd of reindeer! Sing-alongs, storybook times, and holiday-themed activities are almost always part of the fun. And many Christmas Santa Trains serve up special treats from cocoa, candy canes, and cookies to mementos and gifts!

While no two Christmas Trains are alike, some genres have gained widespread popularity. Lights trains in particular are increasingly common attractions. Lights trains aglow with hundreds — often thousands — of twinkling lights welcome riders aboard and greet onlookers along the way! Locomotives and coaches come decked inside and out. And brightly trimmed trees and illuminated tableaux often line the route.

Great Places to See Santa

Looking for somewhere magical to see Santa this year? Instead of taking a trip to the local mall, journey to one of these 13 places for a unique and special experience with Santa Claus.

Santa's Workshop, North Pole, New York

Santa's Workshop, North Pole, NY

12 miles from Lake Placid in the Adirondacks is North Pole , New York, a "workshop village" open in summer and on weekends leading up to Christmas. Santa's village has shops, farm animals, candy makers, glassblowers, puppet shows, and a talking Christmas tree. Rides include Santa's Sleigh Coaster and Reindeer Carousel.

Christmas at Disney World

Walt Disney World

Starting in mid-November,  Walt Disney World celebrates Christmas . 1500 trees are put into place, and major annual celebrations get underway. The biggest event happens in the Magic Kingdom, where Mickey has a  Very Merry Christmas Party  on many nights, and Mickey's Very Merry Parade features Santa on a sleigh, a March of the Wooden Soldiers and dancing gingerbread men.

Grinchmas at Universal Orlando

Seuss Landing , at Islands of Adventure in Orlando, is transformed into a winter wonderland during the holiday season. Citizens of Whoville spread holiday cheer and the Grinch himself stars in a retelling of the story about when he stole Christmas. You can even get an autograph after the show ends.

Christmas Candylane at Hersheypark

Hersheypark

Hershey, Pennsylvania, aka "Chocolate Town USA", serves up a lot of family fun every year during Christmastime, including opportunities to see Santa. Most notably, the Hersheypark theme park opens up for  Christmas Candylane , with more than one million twinkling lights, Santa and live reindeer, a Christmas show, a giant carousel, and other decorated rides.

The Polar Express and Other Christmas Trains

Napa Valley Wine Train

"The Polar Express" is a beautifully illustrated children's book (and blockbuster movie) by Chris Van Allsburg about a child's  train ride to see Santa  at the North Pole. In a number of locations in the U.S., a family can have a "Polar Express" experience: a real-life train ride for kids, that re-creates the mood and even some events from the classic book.

Victorian Holiday Wonderland in Breckenridge, Colorado

GoBreck, Breckenridge Tourism Office

Breckenridge is one of Colorado's excellent ski destinations and is also a quaint town with Victorian architecture that dates back to mining days. Have fun with your kids in the Victorian Christmas atmosphere, with decorated shops on Main Street and the Lighting of Breckinridge when Santa arrives in town in a horse-drawn sleigh.

Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation

Colonial Williamsburg is fun throughout the year, with a beautifully restored historic district, peopled by real-life actors bringing to life the days just before the American Revolution. Create a Swedish Santa out of yarn at Bassett Hall; visit Hennage Auditorium and meet Russia's Grandfather Frost, Italy's La Befana, and America's Santa Claus; and learn about the history of Christmas around the globe.

Holiday Windows in New York

In New York City, the Christmas spirit gets started with Santa's appearance at the  Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade , which kicks off the season of  Christmas sparkle in NYC . Catch a glimpse intricate window displays at retailers like Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, and more.

The Christmas Town in Bethlehem, Connecticut

Connecticut Office of Tourism

Bethlehem, a pretty place to visit, in Connecticut's Litchfield Hills, is a small town that makes the most of its name at Christmas time. Each December, thousands of people make a pilgrimage to Bethlehem to mark their Christmas mail with not only the Bethlehem postmark, but also special rubber-stamps known as "cachets". The best time for families to visit is during the Bethlehem Christmas Town Festival, a two-day event in early December. Opening night has a candlelight processional, and the arrival of Santa to light a 75-foot Christmas Tree.

Santa Claus, Indiana

 Santa Claus, Indiana

Santa Claus  is a great name for a town, most kids would agree. This town in southern Indiana got its name way back in 1856. By 1935, someone had seen the potential for the place to be a tourist attraction, and "Santa's Candy Castle" was opened, reportedly the first themed attraction in the United States.

Christmas in Santa Fe, New Mexico

Bill Heinsohn/Getty Images

Santa Fe , with its adobe architecture, and a mix of Anglo, Hispanic, and Native American cultures, is a strikingly beautiful city to explore. At Christmas-time, traditions from these three cultures come together for a unique festive season.

For starters, there are the "farolitos", the "little lanterns", also called "luminarias": hundreds of glowing lights line walkways and rooftops, each one a small paper bag with a candle set in sand inside. On Christmas Eve, the Santa Fe Plaza glows with farolitos.

A good place for kids to see Santa and his elves is "Christmas at the Palace", with Hispanic, Anglo, and Native American Christmas traditions, carols, storytelling, Matachine dancers, and an appearance by Santa Claus. "The Palace" is the  Palace of the Governors , an elegant adobe-style building dating back to the 17th century. Christmas at the Palace dates are typically early in the month.

See Santa at Christmas Grottos in London

Alan Copson/Getty Images

Kids in the U.K. see Santa, not at his Workshop, but in his "grotto." His grotto isn't dark or cave-like, but rather a Christmas-y setting with elves, bright lights, decorated trees, etc.

Apparently, the tradition started in Adelaide, Australia, with a "Magic Cave" set up in a department store in 1896, and the practice caught on in British stores. Nowadays, you can find a "Santa's Grotto" at most department stores and shopping centers in the U.K. Kids line up to see Santa and get a little gift. Grottos are not always free; some charge the equivalent of $5 or more (and presumably Father Christmas then gives the kids a nicer little gift).

Families ready to grab their winter coats and off-season airfares can have a wonderful London Christmas that includes holiday lights at famous sights, outdoor skating rinks, the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, caroling, Christmas markets , and generally a good chance to imagine you're back in Christmas Past where Scrooge and Bob Cratchit walked the Victorian-era streets. London also has a gigantic New Year's Day parade .

Santa's Village, White Mountains, New Hampshire

Santa's Village

This amusement park for little kids is open for the summer season, with Christmas-themed rides like the "Reindeer Coaster" and the "Yule Log Flume Ride". Kids can see Santa and his reindeer even in July. Santa's Village re-opens after Thanksgiving for special weekends leading up to Christmas Eve. Most rides are open; fun includes Christmas carousel, ferries wheel, Santa's Express Train, and visits with Santa.

Complete Guide to Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole

Complete Guide to Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole

It’s a magical place. A place where dreams come true. Children around the world look forward to visiting the site’s most famous resident, sitting on his lap, and telling him the gifts they want for Christmas. Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole in Colorado is the place where wishes come true.

Christmas is magical in our house. Yearly, we look forward to a midnight visit from Santa Claus and his reindeer. We were excited to visit the Big Man in person at Santa’s Workshop, at the base of Pikes Peak. While there, we were able to see and talk to Santa, catch a magic show, ride some wild rides, and enjoy the wonder of a Nordic-inspired village.

We have done the hard work for you, so you can enjoy everything at the park. Here is our complete guide to Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Santa's Mailbox

About Santa’s Workshop

Santa’s Workshop North Pole opened in 1956. The park is tucked away at the base of Pikes Peak, a short drive from Colorado Springs. Much of the park has steep inclines (and declines) as you are walking up and down the mountainside. It’s important to always watch your step because of the sloping sidewalks and steps throughout the park.

The park to this day has a 1950s feel to it. The Christmas Village looks like something from a different era, which helps add to the magic of the place. Most of the rides and shows have been in the park since its opening. However, the park still has a charming appeal despite the age of some of the attractions.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Clock

Admission to the park is $24 per person, which covers all the rides and shows and a visit to Santa. Of course, food, Santa pictures, and merchandise cost extra. You can print or download discount coupons from the website which saves you a few bucks off the admission fee.

Adults 60-years and older get into the North Pole for free, so it’s a perfect spot to bring the grandparents to share in the holiday fun.

The park is open throughout the year, but the busiest times are from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. most days. Check the North Pole website for days and hours.

The Shows at Santa’s Workshop

There are a couple of shows that you can watch while at Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole.

The magic show takes place several times a day. Your wizard guide delights the audience with a 15-minute show, which includes classic magic acts. Adults will have seen all the tricks before, but the young ones enjoy the show, especially when a rabbit appears at the end of the show.

Elmer the Elf is an animatronic show featuring an elf who sings while strumming a guitar.  Elmer appears in the Christmas Village. He went largely unnoticed during our visit, but I did stop to get some video of his show.

Finally, the glass blower demonstrates his skill in his glass-blowing shop.

Shows are announced throughout the park 10-minutes before showtime.

Family Rides at the North Pole

All of the rides at the North Pole are suitable for families. Although there are height requirements for a handful of rides. Most rides require only an adult chaperone. Additionally, there are some rides for younger kids only, which was disappointing to this kid at heart. Trust me, I tried to get on these rides, but the elves at Santa’s Workshop claimed I was too tall to ride.

There are more than 25 rides at the park. Most are gentle rides, although there are a couple which appeal to the more adventurous soul.

The newest ride (and our family favorite) is the zip line adventure Santa’s Sleigh Ride. Buckled in to Santa’s Sleigh, you are catapulted backwards several hundred feet on the zip line before zooming forward. The ride provides amazing views of the region. Music plays in the sleigh while you are riding, which was fun.

The Candy Cane Coaster is your standard park roller coaster ride with enough bumps and jolts to make you wonder if you have whiplash.

Our kids really enjoyed the Paratrooper ride which swings you quickly through the sky. The Dive Bomber Ride is a similar speedy ride, but you control your plane. You also control your height on the Christmas Tree Ride.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Dive Bomber

We loved the gut drops on the Space Shuttle, and the kids enjoyed riding the Mini-Himalaya with it’s zippy forward, and backward spinning.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Space Shuttle

Our whole family enjoyed the relaxing Sky Ride, which was a peaceful ride in a overhead ski lift-style gondola. We also had to ride the carousel, because, well, because you always have to ride a carousel .

Santa's Workshop North Pole Sky Ride

However, the most enjoyable ride at the park was the most simple. I enjoyed grabbing a potato sack, climbing up a narrow staircase, and sliding down the Peppermint Slide. No state of the art mechanics was needed to relive a small piece of my childhood on the slide.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Peppermint Slide

Food at Santa’s Workshop

There are a number of food vendors. The family-friendly menu options include burgers, dogs, nachos, and chili. Food is reasonably priced, making it inexpensive to feed a family.

You also may carry a picnic lunch into the park.

There are several outside eating areas and picnic tables throughout the park. Since it can get cold at the base of Pikes Peak, the elves at the North Pole placed outdoor patio heaters around the picnic areas for you.

Animals at the North Pole

No trip to Santa’s Workshop would be complete without a looksy at some of Santa’s reindeer. The North Pole has a number of English Fallow Deer and alpacas. For $1, you can get a generous cup of kibble for the animals to eat. Our daughter’s cup of food lasted for a long time. Either she was stingy or the cup was bountiful.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Feeding Reindeer

After a visit to Santa’s House, this was the second most important stop on our tour. The kids wanted to see and feed the animals before they got on any rides.

Shopping at Santa’s Workshop

A number of stores and shops are scattered throughout the park.

One of our favorite shops is the glass blower’s shop. Here, you can admire and purchase glass ornaments or watch the glass blower honing his craft. While in his shop, the glass blower told us his story. He started working at Santa’s Workshop in the summer of 1969, and enjoyed it so much that he never left. It was fun for our family to see the craftsmanship of his work. It’s rare to watch someone with such skill actually hand-craft his work. In a day of mass produced, machine-created merchandise, this was a refreshing stop.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Glass Blower Shop

The Colorado Store, inside the North Pole Post Office, has memorabilia with a distinct Rocky Mountain flair. At the post office, you also can mail off letters and Christmas cards with a North Pole, Colorado postmark.

Other stores include the souvenir shop, the gift shops at the park’s entrance, the Christmas Shop (with ornaments and stockings galore), the Toy Shop, the Candy Shop (with freshly made treats), and the Personalization Shop where you can engrave your special gift.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Post Office

We were impressed with the reasonable prices at all the shops. Too often, amusement parks and tourists spots charge an exorbitant amount for souvenirs. However, this is not the case at Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole.

North Pole Decor

What would the North Pole be without some holiday decoration? Fortunately, there is a ton of fun decor throughout the park. Like the rest of the park, the decor has an old-time feel to it.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Snowmen

One of the most visited spots within the park is the North Pole post. Everyone stops to touch the frozen post to get an idea of what the North Pole actually feels like. Of course it’s cold, but it’s also a great spot to get a picture of your kids touching the icy post (or sticking their tongues to the post).

Christmas Village at Santa’s Workshop

The Christmas Village provides a great opportunity to stroll through a Nordic-inspired village. The buildings have that European, old-world flair with pitched roofs and vibrant primary colors. We admired all of the window shutters in the buildings. Each building had a different shutter design, with Christmas-inspired carvings in the shutters.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Shutters

The chapel is a quaint (and quiet) place to stop and consider the more religious aspects of the Christmas holiday. The stained glass windows, wooden pew, high-beam steeple, and ceramic nativity scene provided a pleasant respite from the wild rides throughout the park. Also, kids love to ring the church bells within the chapel.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Chapel

A fire pit is centrally located within the village. You can purchase a bag of marshmallows from the Candy Shop and roast them over the fire pit at the Christmas Village. Or, simply sit by the fire and warm your body on a cold day.

The Big Show: Santa’s House

We all know that you can see Santa many places during the Christmas holiday season. However, we like visiting Santa’s Workshop in Colorado to see the real Santa Claus.

You find the Big Man at his house, near the entrance to the park. As you can imagine, his magically decorated house is the central draw at the North Pole.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Santa's House

We visited the North Pole two times. Our first visit was after Thanksgiving a few years ago, and the line to sit on Santa’s lap was about 45-minutes to one hour long. However our wait time was five-minutes during our second visit during the first week in November. The lesson: timing matters. Expect longer lines the closer it gets to Christmas.

We appreciate the personal attention we get at Santa’s House. The line can get long. But, the elves monitor the entrance and allow only two families into the house at a time. This makes the visit with Santa special. You can take your time and really have a personal one-on-one conversation with the Big Guy.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Santa's House Decor

One of Santa’s elves will take a professional picture during your visit, but you also are free to take your own photos while your kids (or parents) are sitting on Santa’s knee. You may, of course, order the professional photo. You can also have the photo embossed on a mug or Christmas tree decoration (which is what we did).

Is It Worth the Trip?

If you are spending money on admission tickets, you want to know if you get your money’s worth at Santa’s Village. We think a visit is worth the money spent, especially if you younger children dream of meeting Santa Claus.

There are enough rides to make a days-long trip at the park, although a family with younger children may consider a shorter stay at the park. Our family spent a full day at the park, and there were still plenty of rides to ride.

While the park is showing signs of age with the older rides and buildings, the older feel has a definite appeal. Season passes can be purchased, but we think that a once-a-year visit would be enough for most families.

Santa's Workshop North Pole Countdown

Our kids enjoyed the rides throughout the park, and there was enough variety to keep us engaged throughout the day.

Finally, the food and merchandise prices are reasonable, so we didn’t feel fleeced in either category.

This looks magical! I love old parks like this. There is a North Pole in New York too!

OMG I love Santa’s Workshop. My family used to go there as a kid and it was always so much fun. I knew Christmas was coming when we would pack the wood panel station wagon up and head down from suburban Denver to go see Santa. I never asked why we were driving south to get to the North Pole but it didn’t matter. It was the magic of Christmas and innocence of childhood wrapped up in one.

What a fun memory. So happy we could help you relive a little of your childhood.

As a kid this would have been my dream. It looks just like I imagine santas workshop to be. The rides look like they would keep you occupied for a while and your children look so happy!

We were very entertained for a full day. It does look like Santa’s workshop should look.

Well, I had no idea there was a North Pole, Colorado! Pretty cool! And 25 rides is definitely enough to make a $24 entry fee totally worth it! I think I would love the zipline (total zip fanatic) the most along with the chapel second. Awesome park!

We enjoyed the zip line, especially since we were sitting down comfortably in Santa’s sleigh. Yes, admission is a great deal when you see all the North Pole has to offer.

That zip line looks like a lot of fun – and friendly enough for younger riders, too. I also like the design of the cottages, they really give the feel of being somewhere else, and somewhere a little more magical. I love watching glass blowing artists at work, it’s absolutely amazing what they can do!

Yes, glass blowing is an amazing art form.

This place looks like a hoot for families. But now I am really confused. Is the North Pole in New York, Colorado, Arizona, Florida, Finland … and how on earth does Santa work in all those locations at once? The man is truly magical. 😉

Michael, we are firmly convinced that the North Pole is wherever Santa is. He is magical.

Aww, I would also have been disappointed if I was not allowed on the ride. Being a child at heart should count! Santa’s Chapel look so pretty! The stained glass windows are so gorgeous! I love watching glass blowers at work. It’s such an amazing experience to watch.

This place is awesome! I had never heard of it before and the more I read, the more awesome it was. My kids would LOVE the zipline and the candy cane slide looks like so much fun. I’d love to visit the glass blower as well. It must be even more amazing when its covered in snow.

We missed out on the snow, but I’m sure it is magical when snow covers the ground.

What an adorable little spot! The kids must have loved this. When I was a kid we had a similar attraction park in LA call ed Santa’s Village, though if pictures do it any justice it was a lot cheesier that this one, but we definitely loved it and the memories have lasted my whole life! :p The zip-line sounds like a blast and I’d love to check out that post office as well. Sending this link on to my friends in Colorado 🙂

Thanks for sending the link. We are hoping that our kids have fond memories of the North Pole once they grow older as well.

What a fun place to visit! My family is obsessed with Christmas so this would be a perfect place for us to visit. I’ve seen the North Pole in a few other states but did not know Colorado had one. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. We are a little obsessed with Christmas too.

What a fun place to take the kids, and even the adults who want to feel like kids themselves again. They have so many activities to keep everyone entertained and get you into the Christmas spirit.

Yes, there is plenty of variety and plenty to do.

Santa’s Workshop North Pole is such an adorable place for children and families. Love the decor and the ability to meet Santa Claus. I love reading how Christmas is celebrated in different parts of the world.

It looks like you had a total blast!

Where is Santa Claus right now? Track his Christmas journey using NORAD

Watch Santa’s journey with help from NORAD on our streaming channel  TODAY All Day , beginning at 3 p.m. ET on Dec. 24 and running until 3 a.m. ET on Dec. 25. Families can also reach NORAD by phone at (877) HI-NORAD to receive Santa’s up-to-date location.

With Christmas Eve upon us, another decades-long tradition continues: NORAD’s Santa Tracker .

Every year since 1955, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has played a crucial role for children during the holiday season. Though NORAD’s involvement in the holiday began by complete accident and to this day, the organization keeps track of and reports on the whereabouts of Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.

Gen. Glen VanHerck, Commander, U.S. Northern Command and NORAD told TODAY’s Joe Fryer on Dec. 24, 2022, “When Santa takes off from the North Pole, we see him on the radar right away. And then when Rudolph’s nose lights up, our infrared satellite systems pick that up as well.”

December 2020 marked 65 years of the NORAD Santa Tracker . This nearly seven-decade-long tradition began in 1955 with one child calling a misprinted phone number that came from a Christmas ad for a department store. Instead of reaching the anticipated party, the child reached U.S. Air Force Col. Harry Shoup at Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD), which preceded NORAD.

“He probably thought for a few moments that it may be some type of a prank call, but he quickly realized it was a young child looking for Santa,” Gen. VanHerck told Kerry Sanders on TODAY in Dec. 2020.

Rather than writing off the young caller, Shoup instead told them that he was Santa and that CONAD would ensure that he would be safe along his journey from the North Pole across the world.

Though Shoup passed away in 2009 at age 91, the tradition continues today.

This year, it’s anticipated that the tracker on NORAD's website will receive approximately 12 million visitors while volunteers will likely field about 150,000 phone calls on its Santa hotline to share Santa's current location and anticipated arrival time.

On its website, NORAD says that it tracks Santa using its radar system, the North Warning System, as well as satellites, and jet fighters. As for when Santa will officially arrive at each child’s home, that time can't be determined to a T.

NORAD explained on its website , “NORAD tracks Santa, but only Santa knows his route, which means we cannot predict where and when he will arrive at your house. We do, however, know from history that it appears he arrives only when children are asleep!”

Each year, NORAD says that Santa’s route starts at the international date line before beginning to travel west. He typically starts in the South Pacific followed by New Zealand and Australia, then to Japan, Asia, Africa, followed by Europe, Canada, the United Sates before finishing in Mexico, Central America, and South America.

How is Santa’s trip logistically possible? Well, NORAD says that's because Santa experiences time differently than the rest of us.

“His trip seems to take 24 hours to us, but to Santa it might last days, weeks or even months,” the website explains. “Santa would not want to rush the important job of delivering presents to children and spreading joy to everyone, so the only logical conclusion is that Santa somehow functions within his own time-space continuum.”

Gen. VanHerck doesn’t take NORAD’s contribution to the holiday lightly, especially since becoming a grandfather.

“Everywhere I go, people approach me about ‘NORAD Tracks Santa Claus’ and the importance of it,” he explained. “And now that I have two young grandchildren, it is even more special for me personally, and my wife as well.”
