Considering booking a Norwegian Cruise from Vancouver, BC, to Seward, AK? You’re in luck because Jake and I recently wrapped up our incredible journey on the Norwegian Jewel, cruising from Vancouver to Alaska.
We’re excited to provide you with a candid review of our experience, offering insights and tips to make your decision and voyage even more enjoyable. So, settle in as we share the details of our Norwegian Jewel Alaska Cruise Review from Vancouver to Alaska.
But first, I want to mention that there are many different cruise lines and enticing port stops on an Alaskan Cruise. Our journey kicked off in the vibrant city of Vancouver, British Columbia, weaving through the picturesque landscapes of Alaska’s port towns, Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. And wrapped up with two scenic sailing days in Glacier Bay National Park and a captivating encounter with Hubbard Glacier.
Whether your Alaskan Cruise mirrors these ports or you’re merely exploring to see if this cruise suits your preferences, our sincere review is here to be your compass. Let our insights steer you toward discovering the perfect Alaskan Cruise tailored just for you.
We paid for this vacation all ourselves, Norwegian Cruise Line DID NOT sponsor this post. All opinions are my own.
How To Get To The Vancouver Cruise Port & Check-In
The Vancouver Cruise Port is located right in downtown Vancouver and is easy to get to by foot or public transportation. Once you make it to the port, continue walking toward the end of the pier. Here you should see signs guiding you toward the check-in point.
We stayed at Hotel Le Soleil by Executive Hotels which was a short 10-minute walk to the ship dock. Plus its location was within walking distance to many great restaurants. If you are looking for a hotel to stay the night before the cruise, we highly suggest this hotel!
The check-in location for the Norwegian Cruise line is located downstairs in the Vancouver Cruise Ship Dock .
First, you can check any luggage you don’t want to drag around the ship before your rooms are ready. (Typically rooms aren’t ready until 3 pm). Norwegian Cruise Line staff will place a tag on your bag with the correct room number to deliver to later.
Then, proceed to the check-in station. Have your passport ready! Staff will direct you through the remaining steps, from the security checkpoint and collecting your room key, etc.
All-Inclusive (+ Details On The Drink Package)
The best part about cruising is the all-inclusive package that is included. This means you can eat your little heart out which usually equates to putting on a few pounds on your vacation.
Unlimited Open Bar Drink Package
If you enjoy some boozy drinks on your vacation, you might consider adding the drink package to your Norwegian Jewel Alaska Cruise.
With the current Cruise Deals offered with Norwegian’s Free At Sea, the unlimited drink package is already included.
Here is a list of what is included in the Unlimited Open Bar Package:
- Select, premium cocktails & spirits (under $15 USD)
- Variety of beer and wine by the glass (under $15 USD)
- 20% off all bottles of champagne and wine (above $15 USD)
- Unlimited soft drinks and juices
You are still responsible for a 20% gratuity (which is usually added to the bill automatically before checkout).
If you are not going through the Free At Sea promotion, then the unlimited drink package costs $109 per day + Gratuity.
Typical Drink Prices Aboard Norwegian Jewel Cruise Ship:
- Beer: $6-$9 ($6 for domestic cans – $9 for draft)
- Wine: Starting around $9
- Cocktails: Starting around $10
- Soda: $3.50
Is The Drink Package On The Norwegian Jewel Worth It?
Personally, I only think the drink package is worth it if it’s included with the Free At Sea Package. Otherwise, you probably won’t get your money’s worth.
So doing some light math, let’s say you start drinking in the early afternoon and have one drink per hour. Start with a few cocktails ($10 + $15 + $12 + $13). Then you go to dinner and switch to wine, let’s say you have 2 glasses ($9 + $15). Finally, you go to a show and have 2 more cocktails ($10 + $14).
That’s 8 drinks total throughout the evening and the total is only $98 .
So you actually didn’t even break even and this wasn’t totaling in the cheaper drink options on the menu.
Plus if you are a beer drinker, then you would spend even less, because beer is typically $6-$9.
So no, the drink package is NOT worth it on a Norwegian Cruise, unless it comes included with the Free At Sea Package.
Learn more about our review of the drink package , aboard the Norwegian Cruise.
Hopefully, you can estimate the total # of drinks you plan to have on the cruise to see if it fits into your budget.
It’s important to note, you can’t pick and choose what days you want the unlimited open bar package. It’s ‘all-or-nothing’ for the duration of your cruise. (So for a 7-day cruise, that’s $109 x 7 days = $763 total)
Premium Plus Drink Package
There is also the option to upgrade to the Premium Plus Drink Package which includes many higher-end liquors and wines for an additional $29 per day .
This can be a great option if you like top-shelf liquors and wines rather than the medium-tier options they offer. (Personally, I thought the complementary liquor options offered were satisfactory: Skyy, 1800 Reposado, Jameson, etc).
You also get unlimited still & sparkling bottled water, plus all Starbucks ® coffee & specialty drinks included in the premium drink package. Which could be beneficial if you plan to get specialty coffees and bottled water daily aboard.

Restaurants On The Norwegian Jewel
One benefit of a Norwegian cruise line is the wide variety of options for different restaurants and cuisines offered.
- O’Sheehan’s Bar & Grill ( Pub Fare ) – Middle, Deck 8
- Azura ( Fancy/Casual Dining Room ) – Middle, Deck 6
- Chin Chin ( Asian ) – Middle, Deck 7
- Garden Café ( Cafeteria – All Cuisines ) – Back Right, Deck 12
- The Great Outdoors ( Outdoor Buffet ) – Back, Deck 12
- Topsiders Bar & Grill ( Main Pool Bar & Grill ) – Middle, Deck 12
- Tsar’s Palace ( Fancy/Casual Dining Room ) – Back, Deck 6
Specialty Dining
Specialty dining is an additional cost for cruise attendees. You can check add-on prices on the Norwegian Cruise Line website .
- Moderno Churrascaria ( Brazilian Steakhouse ) – Middle, Deck 13
- Sushi ( Japanese ) – Middle, Deck 7
- La Cucina ( Italian ) – Back, Deck 12
- Cagney’s Steakhouse ( Steakhouse ) – Middle, Deck 13
- Le Bistro ( French ) – Middle, Deck 6
- Teppanyaki ( Japanese ) – Middle, Deck 7
Our Review Of The Complementary Food on the Norwegian Jewel
Personally, we weren’t really that impressed with the Norwegian Cruise Line food. While there definitely was a nice variety of options, it just seemed like everything was mass-produced and lacked flavor.
The main dining rooms ( Azura & Tsar’s Palace ) offered a nice casual-luxury feel. You could either dress nicer or keep it casual, which we appreciated. We had some of our favorite dinner meals here. They offered many different cuisines such as pasta, steak, sandwiches, etc.
The main cafeteria ( Garden Café ) was always SOOOO busy that it was very difficult to find an open table. And we were a party of 2, so I can only imagine if you needed a larger table how much more difficult it may be. The cafe does offer the widest variety of different cuisines, but the place kind of stressed me out.
The Outdoor Cafe was just an extension of the Garden Cafe but outdoors on the rear of the ship. And because we were on an Alaskan Cruise, it was often chilly outdoors and the buffet was much smaller than the indoor cafe.
Topsiders Bar & Grill pretty much just had pool grub, like burgers and hot dogs. On a warm summer day, this might hit the spot, but we weren’t really impressed with the quality of food offered here.
O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill was probably our favorite complementary restaurant overall. Their Reuben was really tasty, but their appetizers left much to be desired. We just enjoyed the vibe of this restaurant as it was casual and had nice booths with windows to enjoy the scenery. And there are also TVs which we enjoyed a few football games. This is the only restaurant open 24/7.
And lastly, we gave Chin Chin a couple of tries for dinner. While it was Asian style, it was generally just okay. We felt flavors were lacking, and it just felt like they had dry meat mixed in with some already pre-mixed sauces to help fast production of food. Overall, we thought the meals were good, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was 5 stars.
Our Review Of The Specialty Dining On The Norwegian Jewel
We only got to try out 1 of the specialty dining restaurants ( Cagney’s Steakhouse ). This was included in the Norwegian Jewel Cruise Ship Free At Sea promotion.
The menu was large, and we each got to choose an appetizer, soup/salad, main, and dessert. Jake got the filet mignon and I got the prime rib. We were impressed with Jake’s meal, but my prime rib was cold when it arrived and overall pretty chewy.
The service was VERY SLOW, but we were in no rush, so we were just patient.
I can’t really suggest paying the extra cost for specialty dining. I just think it is way overpriced, service was slow and too similar to the food already offered complimentary.
Currency On The Norwegian Jewel
Cruise attendees don’t pay cash for anything onboard. In the boarding process, you will receive your room key, which also doubles as your credit card. You will be asked to attach a credit card or debit card before boarding the ship.
When the cruise commences, the Norwegian Cruise Line will charge the final bill to the card or debit card you have on file.
There is the guest services desk in the main atrium (deck 7- middle of the ship) where you can discuss any billing issues on board.
Best Time To Go On An Alaskan Cruise With Norweign Jewel
Alaskan Cruises are typically only offered from May through September . If you want the best weather July and August will provide warmer temperatures and typically sunnier weather. But overall, the weather in Alaska can be rather wet and cloudy many days out of the year.
Fun Fact: Ketchikan, Alaska is one of the rainiest cities in America. They get about 140 – 160 inches per year and it rains about 300 days out of the year.
So while summer offers your best chance for better weather, you should still expect some rainfall and cloudy conditions.
Cruise Port Days (+ How To Get To Town)
On our Norwegian Jewel Cruise from Vancouver to Alaska, we stopped at Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway.
We were pleased to find lots of great restaurants and breweries (our personal favorite) in each town. We were hoping that local seafood would be really affordable, but were a little disappointed to find out it was still very expensive.
And there are plenty of shops with souvenirs and a nauseating amount of jewelry stores at each stop. But if shopping is your thing, you will find plenty of stores to check out.
Personally, we were much more interested in exploring the natural beauty of each location.
Below I will include some of the best excursions offered at each port town. Cruise lines do prefer if you book through them so they can make sure you can safely and punctually get to your excursion and back to the ship.
But it is not required to specifically book through them. (I will say, the prices do tend to be slightly higher if you book through the cruise line, than if you book through a third party).
But with third parties like Viator or Get Your Guide , they can likely find cruise-specific tours and often have all the necessary details for getting you to and from your cruise port dock.
Ketchikan Port Day
Best Excursions: Misty Fjords & Wilderness Explorer , Lighthouse, Totems & Eagles Excursion , Bering Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour , Neets Bear Encounter By Land & Sea , Back Country Jeep® & Canoe Safari
Free Activities: Hike Deer Mountain Trail, explore Creek Street, Totem Heritage Center
Juneau Port Day
Best Excursions: Mendenhall Glacier Explorer (Cheapest Option), Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Trek , Dog Sledding Summer Camp , Mendenhall Glacier By Helicopter & Guided Walk , Mendenhall Glacier & Juneau Tram
Free Activities: Walk around downtown or Bus from Downtown Transit Center to Mendenhall Loop Rd & Dredge Lake Rd ($2 one way) – walk 1.5 miles to Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center (cheapest way to see Mendenhall Glacier).
Skagway Port Day
Best Excursions: White Pass Scenic Railway
Free Activities: Explore downtown
How To Get From The Cruise Ship To Town or Booked Excursions
Free shuttles.
When we were aboard the Norwegian Jewel, we never docked right inside the town itself, rather we always needed to shuttle to and from town. It did feel like our Norwegian Cruise Ship had the least priority for docking locations (other cruise lines got to dock right in town).
While this was inconvenient, they did provide easy and efficient shuttles that brought us to and from the ship.
The biggest negative was it forced you to grab food in town. (I’ve been on cruise lines where we docked right in town, so it made it easy to jump back on the boat to grab lunch and then head back out into town).
Or if you booked an excursion, they will have a separate shuttle to take you directly on your tour. There will usually be important information printed on your ticket about where to meet up.
( Tickets are delivered to your room upon boarding ). If you did not receive your tickets and you booked through the cruise line, you can visit their excursion desk for more information.
Days At Sea (Glacier Bay National Park & Hubbard Glacier)
Some of my favorite days on the Norwegian Jewel Cruise Line were the scenic days at sea. We were able to explore Glacier Bay National Park and Hubbard Glacier via the cruise ship.
For Glacier Bay National Park, the ship onboarded National Park Rangers to give narration about the area. They would point out any wildlife and information about how the area has changed over the years.
These were the days when you could tell everyone was onboard the ship because everywhere was busy. And because the temperatures were chilly, many people preferred to be indoors against the windows to take in the beautiful views (but there weren’t nearly enough seats for the number of people). So many people were forced outside in the cold. (If you’re properly dressed, then the time outside can be enjoyable too).
For the people outside taking in the scenic views, it got very crowded on the pool deck and deck above along the railings. This was one of the major flaws of the Norwegian Cruise Line design because there was not really enough space for everyone to enjoy the views along the railings “peacefully”.
Therefore, you needed to switch back and forth between guests so you could all get a nice view without being behind other people’s heads. Obviously, this was a tad annoying and a flaw of the boat design for an Alaskan Cruise, but everyone made it work!
For the days at sea on a Norwegian Jewel Alaska Cruise, it is a HUGE benefit to have a balcony room. This can provide you with some personal space away from other tourists. But sadly, you won’t be offered 360 views, so you could get FOMO for not being able to see the other side of the passage.
Pools & Hot Tubs On Norwegian Jewel Alaska Cruise
The Norwegian Jewel Cruise Ship has two different pools. One is family-friendly, and the other is 18+. Both pools are heated making them a comfortable temperature even in cold weather.
There are also 4 separate hot tubs on the main pool deck. Again 2 are family-friendly, and two are located in the adult-only area (ages 18+).
There are also 2 additional hot tubs in the Thermal Suites (which are an additional charge and separated by male/female exclusive rooms).
You will also see two other hot tubs 2 decks above from the main pool deck, but you must be part of the Haven Club.
For an Alaskan Cruise, the pools were barely touched, but the hot tubs are highly sought after. In the late evening, it was hard to snag a spot because they were often very full with other tourists. If you want to avoid the crowds, go at unique times, such as morning or lunch/early afternoon.
Staterooms On The Norwegian Jewel
There are 6 different stateroom options:
- Inside (cheapest, lowest tier room, small, no windows)
- Oceanview (small window out to sea inside a small room)
- Balcony (glass doors open to a small balcony)
- Club Balcony Suite (slightly larger rooms than just a balcony room, luxury bath and shower)
- Suite (spacious luxury rooms, with larger balcony)
- The Haven (top tier most luxurious of the stateroom options, located at the top of the ship, and features 24-hour butler service, concierge service, and private sundeck)
Our Inside Stateroom On The Norwegian Jewel
Jake and I opted for a budget room, so we got an inside stateroom. Honestly, the room was small, but it was clean and had enough space for the two of us. But, if we had to choose again, we probably would have paid the extra cost to get a balcony room.
On an Alaskan Cruise where the majority of the cruise is about sightseeing, it can be nice to have a space all to yourself. Many of the top decks were packed with people and not everyone got a railing, so you had to interchange places so everyone could get some unobstructed photos and videos.
Usually on a Caribbean Cruise, you will be sitting out on the sun loungers and barely in your room. So I think an inside room is honestly fine. But for an Alaskan Cruise, a balcony can be a worthy upgrade.
Entertainment On The Norwegian Jewel Alaska Cruise
There is never a dull moment on the Norwegian Cruise Line. If you are someone who has to stay busy all day long, there is always something going on. In the morning there is usually trivia or bingo, afternoon some fun family games, and in the evening some very talented shows.
Actually, it’s perhaps a weird complaint, but we sometimes felt like there were too many events going on. We struggled to find a quiet and comfortable place to sit and play cards while watching the scenery go by.
The evening entertainment of our Norwegian Cruise Ship was AMAZING and certainly a highlight of our trip! There were talented singers, gymnasts/acrobats, comedians, and more in the Stardust Theater.
Wifi/Cell Service On Board The Norwegian Jewel Alaska Cruise
Wifi is a JOKE on the Norwegian Jewel. In our Free At Sea cruise package, we were offered 100 minutes of complimentary wifi. You waste many minutes just trying to get connected.
You also need to be connected to log out to save your minutes. I ran into connection issues many times, especially when trying to log out of my wifi package. Therefore, many minutes were lost not even using the internet, just simply trying to log out.
My husband opted for the unlimited wifi package in hopes the wifi connection would somehow improve. But it really didn’t work any better and was just a throwaway of money. Even with the upgrade, they severely throttle internet bandwidth. I believe it was capped a 2mbps, and functionally it was sometimes barely enough to even load emails.
Also, the wifi didn’t work in our inside stateroom at all. It only worked when we were on the upper levels of the ship.
Internet Cafe On Norwegian Jewel
Another thought was the Internet Cafe would maybe have the strongest connection on board. WRONG! The Internet Cafe just provides community use of computers.
If you don’t have a cell phone or laptop to connect to the wifi, then this can be a great option to get connected.
Cell Service at Cruise Ports in Alaska
For U.S. Citizens on an Alaska Cruise, you may benefit from using your cellular data at port. Many of the cell towers will work for main cell phone carriers without any additional charges.
But when you are out at sea, the cell towers act differently, and you will be charged for using your phone. So make sure you only use your phone when docked at ports, otherwise you might have a hefty phone bill for roaming out at sea.
Norwegian Cruise App
The Norwegian Cruise App allows you to pre-book dining reservations, book shore excursions, see the schedule of entertainment on board, or to chat or call members on board. But with the wifi being poor, it was hard to use the app successfully aboard, so I found the app was basically useless.
Hopefully, they improve this feature to work better with the community wifi in the future!
They provide a daily publication in your room, that outlines the days activities, local information, weather, and more.
Sports On Board The Norwegian Jewel
There are actually a handful of different sports to try out on the Norwegian Jewel. There is a large court located on Deck 13 where guests can play basketball, soccer, volleyball, etc. Or on deck 12 there is a large shuffleboard game, large-size bowling, and a golf net.
Pulse Fitness Center
The fitness center is free of charge and actually has a nice variety of different machines and weights. Plus each piece of cardio equipment faces out to the beautiful views.
We found the fitness center to be quite busy, especially in the mornings. If you want to avoid the crowds, mid-afternoon seemed to be the best time.
You can also participate in daily aerobics/fitness classes. Classes typically cost $20 per class.
Additionally, there is also a jogging/walking track on Deck 13 that is open 24/7. However, it was often slippery because of rain, and part of shared space on the upper deck. So functionally it didn’t seem like an ideal place to run/jog in peace.
Mandara Spa
There is a luxury spa located on the Norwegian Jewel. The spa offers a wide variety of different treatments for an additional charge. If you enjoy pampering yourself on vacation, this could be exactly what you need.
Thermal Suite
You can also opt to pay for the thermal suite. Here you will find the Thalasso Therapy Pool and gendered thermal suite rooms. The thermal suites each have a sauna, steam room, and hot tub.
Our Honest Review Of Norwegian Jewel Alaska Cruise From Vancouver To Alaska
We were overall happy with our experience on the Norwegian Jewel Alaskan Cruise. And actually, a cruise ship is probably the best way to get to many of Alaska’s remote coastal destinations. Personally, we were most interested in seeing and experiencing Alaska’s natural beauty.
This cruise does however leave some things to be desired.
When you think of a cruise ship, you’re probably thinking of a tropical sunny destination. And well, this ship is certainly designed for a cruise of that nature.
The Norwegian Jewel also sails to the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama Canal, Asia, Bahamas, and the Pacific Coastal.
There are deck chairs that surround the boat lined up for you to soak up the sun and less of an emphasis on unobstructed views. And views are typically the main reason people go on an Alaskan Cruise in my opinion.
Therefore, overall, the views certainly impressed us, but the boat is not exactly designed for sightseeing in chilly temperatures. It was rare for many people to be “sunbathing” on the pool deck. And with this area being largely unused meant that passengers were disproportionately concentrated in other areas.
The seats indoors with great views were always in extremely high demand. So we felt that the Norwegian Jewel didn’t quite provide for that enough.
Additionally, the main pool deck area has tall glass windows stretching nearly 10 feet tall, which isn’t ideal for snapping that legendary Alaska photo.
So many people sought after the railings with no windows which was not nearly large enough for the amount of people. Ultimately making it hard to truly take in the beauty because people were kind of jockeying for a ‘front row’ view of the scenery.
These were some of the flaws we noticed in the Norwegian Jewel. BUT…
Overall, I think an Alaskan Cruise is 100% worth it. If you enjoy beautiful nature, then there is an abundance of scenery that will simply make your jaw drop. And the onboard entertainment was the second biggest highlight of the trip.
I think a Norwegian Jewel Cruise was right for our budget. I think it struck a nice balance between budget, yet still seeming “comfort-luxury”.
We cruised with the Free At Sea Promotional Package , allowing us to get the cruise for 50% off, including the drink package, 1 specialty dining experience, 100 minutes of free wifi, and a $50 voucher for an excursion. So for the lower prices, the cruise was so worth it to us!
If budget was less of an issue, we maybe would have chosen a different cruise line that is known for better food, and maybe has more of an emphasis on decks for the ultimate viewing experience.
We hope this honest review for a Vancouver to Alaska Norwegian Jewel Cruise was helpful and makes your decision if this cruise is right for you!

Norwegian Jewel Review | Alaskan Cruise
Setting sail on an Alaskan adventure aboard the Norwegian Jewel is an incredible experience exploring breathtaking glaciers, delightful ports, and untouched landscapes. I’m excited to share our experience with you, including the highlights that were amazing and some aspects that didn’t quite hit the mark for us. Check out our Norwegian cruise line reviews for the Jewel, an honest take so you’ll be ready to make informed decisions for your own Alaskan adventures!
What makes the Norwegian Jewel great is its awesome lineup of Alaskan cruise options. Whether you’re wanting a northbound or southbound cruise, this ship offers both options. This ship also visits awesome Alaskan spots like Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, and the big seller for us – Glacier Bay National Park.
Why We Went with the Norwegian Jewel
One big reason we went with the Norwegian Jewel for our Northbound Alaskan Cruise was the chance to explore Glacier Bay National Park and end our journey in Seward. We were eager to take some extra time to explore Seward, check out the stunning Kenai Fjords, and experience Coastal Route on the Alaskan Railroad. We really appreciated how each port stop gave us plenty of time to wander and soak in the surroundings. Those extra days in Seward? They were amazing, one of our favorite spots in Alaska!
Don’t miss going on the Alaskan Railroad, either heading to or from Seward – it’s a must! I’d totally suggest treating yourself to the Gold Star ticket. It comes with a delicious meal and reserved seats in the glass dome car – so worth it!
Honestly, Seward and the Alaskan Railroad made it to the top of our favorite memories list. And let me tell you, Glacier Bay National Park? Absolutely jaw-dropping and unforgettable. If you’re planning a cruise, go for one that spends a day here – totally worth it!
Once you step onto the Norwegian Jewel, get ready for a boatload of fun and entertainment! There’s a whole bunch of stuff to dive into – from different restaurants and cool bars to cozy lounges and as well as a casino, they’ve got something for everyone. If you’re feeling the need for some pampering, there’s a spa, a fitness center, and more than one swimming pool to choose from. When the night rolls in, treat yourself to live shows at the theater or just chill out in one of the laid-back lounges. It’s all about making the most of your time on board!
Here’s the lowdown on what we loved and what could be better in this Norwegian Jewel review, especially when it comes to cruising through Alaska.
Things We Loved About This Ship
Recently Updated Ship with Modern Amenities.
We thought the ship looked great and we loved all the cozy spots where you could just sit back and soak in the amazing views. Our favorite hangouts were definitely the Spinnaker Lounge and the Maltings Whiskey Bar. The spa wasn’t the most upscale I’ve visited, but it had a nice vibe. The massage I got there was hands down one of the best I’ve ever had. Even though the therapy area was on the smaller side, the design was nice, and everything was super easy to navigate.
Great Alaskan Itinerary
The Jewel takes you on both Northbound and Southbound Alaskan cruises. Now, Norwegian does have closed loop cruises on newer, bigger ships with more bells and whistles than the Jewel. But because of the longer distance from Alaska, those ones usually have shorter port times and you miss out on sailing through much of the Inside Passage, and those were two things we really wanted to experience. The Northbound adventure starts in Vancouver, BC, and wraps up in Seward, AK. If you’re going Southbound, it starts in Seward, AK, and ends in Vancouver, BC. One big perk of these one-way cruises is that you get more time to explore in each port, and that was a big deal for us.
Exceptional Crew and Service
Overall, we had a great experience with everyone being super helpful and friendly wherever we went. The only hiccup was in the main dining rooms, Azure and The Tsar’s Palace – it felt a bit rushed and impersonable, but I get it, it’s part of the whole Freestyle dining thing with Norwegian. I did miss having the same servers for our dinners there every night, though. However, we loved the crew in the Maltings Whiskey Bar & Shakers Martini Bar. They were hands down our favorite crew to hang out with on the ship!
Absolutely Delicious Food at the Specialty Restaurants
The specialty restaurants were a hit! Each one treated us to mouthwatering dishes and top-notch service. We loved our food at every meal and were so pumped that we got to try four out the five specialty restaurants on board. The only bummer was missing out on Teppanyaki due to a reservation glitch with Norwegian.
Make reservations for the Specialty Dining Restaurants on the App as soon as they open up so that you get the times and days that you want!
We purchased Norwegian’s Have it All package, which included four dinners at the specialty restaurants, and it was such a smart move for us. It made being able to experience all this delicious food easy, and that’s a big part of what makes our vacation so special.
Plenty of Activities and Entertainment
We really enjoyed the mix of activities on board. We treated ourselves to the Wine and Chocolate Pairing event and had a blast with several rounds of Bingo. Trivia games were an offered on board, but we never quite made it to one. Just to note, if you’re traveling with kids, it didn’t seem like there were loads of activities specifically for them, so that’s worth considering.
Overall we thought there were lots of great positives and since this is a cruise focused on the destination, we didn’t mind not having waterslides or bumper cars on the ship.
Some Things That Aren’t as Amazing
The Cabins are on the Smaller Side
Just a heads-up, the cabins on the Jewel are a bit on the smaller side, so keep that in mind when you’re booking. The interiors, especially, are cozy, so you better really like the folks you’re sailing with if you go for that option! I initially felt a bit frustrated by the smaller cabins compared to other ships, so I splurged on a Club Level Veranda Cabin, and it turned out to be great for us! Surprisingly spacious bathroom, a handy extra seating area, and the added bonus of included laundry services – it really made our stay more comfortable. If you’re looking for more space, I’d totally recommend upgrading to the Club Level rooms. For us, it was a fantastic choice, and we took full advantage of all the extra perks they had to offer.
Food Quality in the Main Dining Rooms and the Buffet
I’ve got to be honest; the included food was my biggest letdown on this trip. It just didn’t live up to what I was expecting. There was one meal in the dining room that was so inedible that I ended up heading to the buffet to find something else to eat. I’m usually a fan of dining in the main dining rooms on cruises, but the one on the Jewel was my least favorite, especially Azure – I’d suggest giving it a pass. On the bright side, there were a few tasty highlights, like those morning buns at the buffet that changed daily. Plus, the afternoon snack buffet at 3 pm was a winner, with scones, finger foods, and a different cake each day, it is found on the Great Outdoors buffet.
The Locations of the Docks in Port
When I booked this cruise, I knew that Princess Cruises and Holland America get the prime docking spots in Alaska, and that became pretty evident during our trip. It didn’t bother me too much, but if you’re not ready for it, it can be a bit of a hassle. In Ketchikan, the port is a 20-minute bus ride from town. Since it was our shortest day, I booked an excursion through Norwegian, and it was fantastic. You just need to be aware and plan ahead. In Juneau and Skagway, the docks are about a 15 to 20-minute walk from the ship. If you prefer, there are shuttles available too.
Nightly Performances in the Theater
I get that Norwegian is working on spicing up their theater lineup, but to be honest, this part fell a bit flat for me. The variety was lacking, and the quality wasn’t up to par. Surprisingly, we found more enjoyment in the smaller shows happening in the Spinnaker Lounge compared to the main theater. I’m crossing my fingers that they step up their game in the future because live performances are usually one of the highlights I eagerly anticipate on a cruise.
Tips for Booking an Alaskan Cruise on the Norwegian Jewel
Alaska offers a bunch of incredible cruise options, and for us, the Jewel turned out to be the perfect match. If your main interest is soaking in the destinations rather than a ton of activities, you might find it’s the right fit for you too. Check out these tips to make the most of your Alaskan cruise – they’ll work for any cruise line you choose. If you’re unsure which one suits you best, feel free to reach out , and I’d be happy to help you pick a fantastic one!
Book your cruise as early if you are traveling during peak season.
To make sure you snag the rooms with the best views, especially if you’re eyeing spots like the cabins that face the land side of the inside passage or a specific location, it’s key to book early. I’m prone to getting seasick, so I made sure to lock in my cabin well ahead of time for the smoothest sailing.
Even if you don’t normally get seasick, I recommend packing something just in case the waters get a little rough. Trust me, you do not want to be seasick on your vacation!
Given how sought-after Alaska cruises are, I’d recommend booking at least a year in advance to secure your ideal accommodations.
Consider Booking a Suite or Balcony Cabin.
Getting a balcony for our Alaska cruise was a definite must for us. We spotted a bunch of animals right from our balcony and had stunning views in the morning while sipping on my coffee. I can’t stress enough how worth it was for the price – it truly elevated our cruise experience. Highly recommend it!
Consider Buying an Upgrade Package
For those who love exploring various onboard restaurants, I’d suggest going for a specialty dining package. The Have it All package is a winner if you’re into trying out specialty restaurants, booking your excursions through Norwegian, and enjoying top-shelf liquor. We went for it, and it was fantastic! We even scored free Goldbelt Tram tickets on a whim in Juneau, as they were under 50 dollars per person. Turned out to be an awesome experience!
Avoid Disappointment by Booking Shore Excursions in Advance.
We chatted with some folks who waited too long and had to settle for something else. Lesson learned: if there’s something you’re super excited about, don’t procrastinate! An Alaska cruise is a bucket list adventure, and you definitely don’t want to miss out on those dream experiences you’ve been imagining. Plan ahead and make it happen!
The must-do excursion for us was definitely the whale watching. We went with Jayleen’s Alaska , and it was absolutely awesome! With a max of 6 people per boat, everyone had plenty of room to catch amazing views of the whales!
Pack for All Types of Weather
Alaska’s weather can switch up in a heartbeat, so being ready is key. We found that packing layers and waterproof gear was a game-changer for fully enjoying our time in port. As the saying goes among Alaskans, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad gear! Curious about the must-have items we packed for our Alaska cruise? Check them out !
Norwegian Cruise Line Reviews Alaska | Overall Thoughts
In our overall take on the Norwegian Jewel, it’s a fantastic choice for an Alaskan cruise. There’s a ton of things to do and enjoy, the crew and service are top-notch. If you’re looking for a mid-sized ship with a variety of Alaskan adventures, the Norwegian Jewel is a great option. We’d absolutely go for another Norwegian cruise, being prepared to splurge a bit on the Have it All package and an upgraded cabin to enhance the overall cruise experience. Our Alaska cruise was truly amazing, and we’re already gearing up for another trip there!

Norwegian Jewel Itineraries
Norwegian jewel review, review of norwegian jewel.
The 2005-built Norwegian Jewel cruise ship is the 1st of NCL's Jewel-class liners - together with Norwegian Gem , Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Pearl .
The vessel (IMO number 9304045) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311827000) and registered in Nassau .
History - construction and ownership
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a subsidiary company of the shipping corporation Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH). NCL was founded in 1966, headquartered in Miami (Florida USA) and publicly traded (NASDAQ) company listed on NYSE ( NYC ). NCLH's major shareholders are the corporations Apollo Global Management (American), Genting Group (Malaysian) and TPG Capital (American). In 2017, the brand NCL had a worldwide cruise market share 8,7% (passengers) and 8,4% (revenue). NCLH (shipowner) owns the brands NCL , Oceania and RSSC-Regent .
The 2400-passenger ship Norwegian Jewel became operational in August 2005. Built at Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany she was christened on November 3, 2005, during an official ceremony at the Port of Miami. Designed to be in the category of Freestyle Cruising, Norwegian Jewel easily transports 2,400 guests and over 1,000 crew members. The special about this vessel is her speed, restaurant options, and family comfortable accommodations. Norwegian Jewel also gives passengers different options for relaxation like public bars and lounges, well-equipped sports and fitness facilities, and staterooms designed with rich cherry wood finishing.
Decks and Cabins
Norwegian Jewel staterooms (1188 total, in 35 grades) include 190x Suites, 360x Balcony, 243x Oceanview and 411 Inside cabins. Most staterooms are sized 140-160 ft2 (13-15 m2). The largest accommodations are the 3-Bedroom The Haven Garden Villa (2320 ft2 / 216 m2, with terrace sized 1035 ft2 / 96 m2).
The boat has 15 decks , of which 12 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.
During the 2-week drydock 2018 refurbishment , all passenger staterooms were upgraded with smart HDTVs and USB outlets, new carpeting, furniture and artworks. "The Haven" cabin complex received courtyard updates, and all villas and suites received new finishes, tiles, drapes, carpets, artworks and furniture. Additional cabanas were added to Sun Deck. Two new Haven Deluxe Owner Suites were added (max capacity 4 pax, cabin size 1200 ft2 / 112 m2, balcony size 565 ft2 / 53 m2, with terrace whirlpool).
Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks
Passengers onboard Norwegian Jewel can seek out their preferred dishes at Cagney's Steak House, Blue Lagoon, and the signature restaurant Le Bistro, or can try the lovely pasta at Mama's Italian Kitchen and tapas at Tangos. The main restaurant, Tsar's Palace, shows the magnificence of St. Petersburg with gold ceilings, shining chandeliers, and ornate balustrades reminiscent of Faberge eggs. An electronic system onboard Norwegian Jewel cuts down on wait times and lines in the restaurants. Monitors throughout the corridors reveal how busy the eateries are, with a bar ranging from green (come on in) to red (crowded). This screen acts as an electronic hostess and lets guests know how long the wait is for a table for four, for example, and where parties are being accepted.

Norwegian Jewel Wiki
Jewel is the first of the Jewel-class NCL ships. Her sisters in the fleet are the NCL ships Gem , Jade and Pearl . The ship was christened on November 3, 2005, at PortMiami. The vessel's godmother is the wife of the real estate magnate (multibillionaire and future US President) Donald Trump - Melania Trump (Slovenian, born Apr 26, 1970). Later, Mr Trump required a 30 sec long TV commercial reviewing the new NCL ship to be placed during one of the episodes of “The Apprentice” (reality game TV series).
The Inaugural Cruise (Maiden Voyage) was on August 10, 2005 (Mediterranean/Europe), Caribbean Inaugural on November 4, 2005 (from Port Miami ).
NCL Jewel, just like the fleet mate Pearl, was a TV commercial star. The "big show" was for about 30 sec in one of the episodes of NBC's "The Apprentice" TV-series (US game show hosted by Mr Trump).
During NCL Jewel's 2014 drydock refurbishment, the ship was retrofitted with new "scrubbers" (exhaust gas cleaning systems). The new scrubber technology reduces the equivalent of approx 1500 tons of the poisonous gas Sulfur Oxide. Norwegian Cruise Line was the first cruise company retrofitting with a scrubber hybrid system vessels while in service. The new in-line scrubbers (5 units) are lightweight and able to operate in a dry mode, as well as in open and closed loops.

OK, we've been home long enough for me to catch up on everything else, so now I have time to jot down a few thoughts about last week's sailing from Seward to Vancouver aboard the NCL Jewel.
First, a few disclaimers: 1. This is the same sailing that @YVRteacher covered in her excellent live review of her 5/1-5/15 BTB on the Jewel - so I will not cover the day-by-day details. Read her review if you want that - I couldn't do a better job than her live review. 2. If you are the type who likes to read the ending first, the bottom line is we had a fantastic cruise in just about every respect.
All that said, I will share our experiences and thoughts in case it helps others who might be considering sailing on this itinerary or ship.
Background:
This was the first cruise with our (now grown) children in 5 years, so we splurged and used the 50% off coupon that came out a few months ago to buy the Deluxe Owner's Suite. This is way above what we normally buy for a cruise, but we wanted to have a space to all gather (our sons were in an inside cabin), and my DW really liked the idea of having a hot tub on our balcony. As it turned out, this was a great decision (more on this later.) I have to admit that I was somewhat inspired to go for the DOS after reading @Sthrngary write about doing this for a family cruise - thanks again, Gary! Also, we just reached Platinum status, which entitled us to some new perks for this cruise.
Ship condition, crew and capacity:
This was our fourth NCL cruise in two years, and the Jewel was easily the cleanest, best-maintained ship we have been on so far (others were Getaway, Breakaway, and Escape). Ships generally show wear and tear very soon after an overhaul just from the thousands of people moving around every day, but the Jewel showed almost no scuffs, scrapes or stains.
The crew was outstanding as well. Everyone was good to excellent in terms of attitude and service. All of the waitstaff in the MDR was top-notch, even when we accidentally showed up for lunch one day right at closing time. I hate doing that to people, but the staff insisted it was no problem and took great care of us. Our room steward and butler were the best we can remember.
The Jewel was less than 50% full - we were told there were about 1200 passengers, so nothing ever felt full. The Azura dining room was closed for the week, and the theatre shows only ran once a night at 8:30, but even so the dining room and theatre had plenty of space. This was the first sailing of the season from Seward to Vancouver for the Jewel, so that might have had something to do with it.
I wasn't sure how food would go, since there isn't a Haven dining room on the Jewel. But we had some of the best food we can remember on this sailing. The Haven breakfast and lunch in Moderno/Cagney's were as good as being on a bigger ship. We had dinner in Moderno, Cagney's, and Teppanyaki, all of which were quite good in their own ways - Moderno for the "meat-fest", Teppanyaki for the show (and the food was good too), and our Cagney's experience was our best on any NCL ship. The big surprise was the MDR, which was outstanding. Every meal there was excellent.
On the less-great side, O'Sheehan's was so-so. I've read other reviews that rave about it, and so I keep hoping that this time will be better, and it just doesn't happen for us. Our only really disappointing meal was in Chin-Chin. None of our dishes were very good - we ended up going to the MDR afterward for dessert just to have something good for our meal.
Entertainment:
We really enjoyed the shows in the theatre on this sailing. The Jewel didn't have a Broadway-style show, but the aerialists, the diva, and the troupe on board were all quite good. The theatre in the Jewel is huge for a ship of its size.
The musicians around the ship were OK. It didn't matter for us since we didn't hang out in Bliss or the atrium, but we heard them as we went through. Some were pretty good, but others made us want to keep walking.
I will simply say that renting something like the DOS is something everyone should have the chance to do once. We'll probably never do it again, but for this itinerary, on this ship, it was the best. There are two DOS on the Jewel, and they are on Deck 15 - the only cabins (or enclosed space) on that deck. You're above the entire ship, just aft of the main pool, so we had an amazing view from our windows and the balcony. As my DW expected, the hot tub was a winner - it was really fun to sit in the tub and watch the wilderness go by. Our steward, butler, and the hot tub attendant were all fantastic.
Ports/excursions:
We did kayaking in Icy Strait Point, the White Pass Railroad/Cycling excursion in Seward, and the Duck Boat tour in Ketchikan. All were fun. We were supposed to take the Glacier Explorer trip in Endicott Arm, but it was canceled due to ice in the water. We understood, but it was a bummer. The other bummer was that the Jewel couldn't get close enough to the end of the Arm to see the glacier, also due to ice in the water. We had a great time walking around the ports, even in the rain and chill at Ketchikan.
So all in all, it was a fantastic time, and we would definitely sail on the Jewel again. Happy to answer any questions anyone might have.

Wow! Your review and @YVRteacher 's have inspired me to truly consider Jewel. I have only done so half-heartedly given there isn't a true Haven onboard. But, the staff and condition of the ship sound really great.
And, what a wonderful opportunity to chill...err stew in the hot tub while watching the scenery pass you by. I bet you had some lovely family conversation during this time. Thanks for such a great review! I really enjoyed reading about it and am glad you had such a fantastic time!
12 hours ago, wil e coyote said: OK, we've been home long enough for me to catch up on everything else, so now I have time to jot down a few thoughts about last week's sailing from Seward to Vancouver aboard the NCL Jewel. Background: This was the first cruise with our (now grown) children in 5 years, so we splurged and used the 50% off coupon that came out a few months ago to buy the Deluxe Owner's Suite. Ship condition, crew and capacity: This was our fourth NCL cruise in two years, and the Jewel was easily the cleanest, best-maintained ship we have been on so far (others were Getaway, Breakaway, and Escape). Thank you for taking the time to report in your trip and happy to hear you had wonderful time. We will be on the same itinerary in August.

I also thought I had no desire for an older, smaller ship, but reading all of @YVRteacher 's detailed reports convinced me to give it a try to the delight of my husband.

Did you use NCL air for your trip? How were the transfers to the ship? Close? Faraway? We are considering this exact cruise for our first trip to Alaska from CT! We have been on NCL before but bigger ships. We would probably get an oceanview to save money. Glad to hear the ship was not sold out. How was the weather for Alaska? Any sun? Thanks for the answers.

Hi - we have used NCL Air for other cruises, but didn't for this one - mostly because we had some very specific schedule constraints before and after the cruise that I wanted to make sure we could meet. We flew into Anchorage two days early and did some sightseeing, including a "flightseeing" tour of Denali. I didn't mention that in my review because it wasn't part of the cruise proper, but it was one of the highlights of the trip for me and I HIGHLY recommend spending the money on it if you are in Anchorage.
To get to an NCL Seward cruise, you have to fly into Anchorage, and then get from there to Seward, which is 2-3 hours away on a two lane road with major construction along the way. NCL offers bus transfers from the airport, or you can get private bus transfers either as a direct 2 hour drive or with a stop at a wildlife sanctuary. We actually chose a private van transfer since it was basically the same price for the 5 of us as buying bus tickets. Bottom line - allow plenty of time to get to the dock. Once we got to Seward, the embarkation process was super-easy.
The weather was not bad considering it was May and Alaska. Highs in Anchorage were in the 50s, and that was true for most of the cruise. There was rain on a couple of days, but the only all-day rain was in Ketchikan. The final day (sea day) was in the 60s and sunny in the afternoon, and people actually hung out on the pool deck and sunbathed. It was pretty much what we expected for the Pacific Northwest.

We will also be staying in Anchorage for two days prior to our cruise. What is the name of the company you used for the "flightseeing" tour of Denali?

We used Rust's Aviation. They were recommended to us by someone who used to be a bush pilot up there. Rust's was really great to work with and the pilot sure knew his way around the area. I'd highly recommend.

Thank you. I will look into it during lunch today.
FWIW - flying to Anchorage from New England/New York is a pain - and while I've had good experiences with NCL Air, we've only used them to go to Florida. There are lots of flights and airport options in the Miami/Port Canaveral area, so I have always figured that if something went sideways with our flights to those ports, we could come up with a solution to get to the boat. But Anchorage is different. There is only one airport, and limited flights from the Northeast. So that was part of the decision to book our own flights.
I’m so glad we met at the CC meet and greet! Next time you stay in a deluxe owner’s suite I hope you invite me up so I can see what it looks like!
The Jewel is a special ship!

The non-Haven suites with access to Haven like breakfasts and lunches in Moderno/Cagney’s are so special that I think you will adjust to losing the Haven pool area and lounge. Alaska cruises are so beautiful and so different from Caribbean cruises.
@cruiseny4life you might find that the passengers on Alaskan cruises are so nice you may even want to talk to them!
There is a distinct Haven on the Jewel, but it isn’t like the Haven on the larger ships. There is a Haven courtyard with a teeny tiny pool and a hot tub and a Haven sundeck. The two bedroom non Haven suites on deck 11 are great rooms. Some of them even have working toilets! 😉

Actually, I think the Haven pool on Jewel is similar to the -Away class ships, if you ignore the weird, 6" deep part of the Haven pool on the newer ships. I've never understood the logic of the wading pool part of the Haven pools.
Thanks for review I sail on her 8/28 can’t wait

We're on the Spirit B2B Alaska later on this month, starting from Seward. We chose to book our own air .... we're in Bermuda so need to hop over to one of the getaway apirports (JFK, BOS, CLT, PHL, EWR) before making connection to ANC. Found a great route - BDA to JFK to ORD same afternoon/early evening, overnight in an ORD hotel (that comes out much cheaper than New York or Seattle), then early the following morning non-stop flight from ORD to ANC, arriving there at noon! If that flight is cancelled we have ORD-SEA-ANC as backup.
We've booked a floatplane flightseeing tour over Anchorage with Rust's Flying Service later in that afternoon!! We travel to Seward by train early the next morning for 2 night before embarking the Spirit.
We're beyond excited!

That sounds fantastic! You'll love the floatplane adventure.
I hear the train is really nice. It drops you right on the pier in Seward. It wasn't an option for us as it started running the week after our sailing.

I have never been on a floatplane, but have been in a helicopter and up in a balloon (twice).
We're taking a regular train, not the NCL chartered train (that goes directly to the pier). We reserved GoldStar Dome seats and the train will stop at Seward Train Depot, closer to hotel, lol.

@bluesea777 will you be doing a live review or would it be possible for you to post the dailies? Have a wonderful cruise! We really enjoyed the early morning train ride from Anchorage to Seward along with exploring the Seward area. If you get to the cruise port before 11am, you will likely be among the first guests to board the ship.
@wil e coyote Thank you for your wonderful review. We used to love food at O’Sheehans but agree that it’s been okay and not great. We tend to avoid Chin-Chins, too, as we really only liked the appetizers but not the main course options. We found the food on the rest of the ship to be excellent and the Jewel is among our favorite NCL ships. That is wonderful that you received a 50% off coupon and were able to splurge on a DOS. The hot tub sounds amazing. And we love cruising Alaska to do as you described to watch the wilderness go by.

Not sure, haven't decided whether to do a live review. We'll see.
We go down to Seward two days before the cruise.

FWIW, @YVRteacher posted the dailies from last week's sailing, so check those out!
Trying to find out if the Hubbard Glacier shore excursion gets you close to the glacier since it's in boats. Anyone been on then recently? We do Jewel land/cruise 8/10
wil e coyote.. quick question? this is my 5 NCL cruise and never been offered a 50% off. How did you get it?

Did you book the 3 hour tour? I think my husband would love it but I do not think I will be able to handle a 3 hour flight in that small plane.

It is supposed to - I have a friend who went on it last year and highly recommended it. We were booked on it but it got canceled last week.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship

Thinking of booking a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line ? You have a lot of choices. The Miami-based line operates vessels in almost every corner of the world, with a wide range of itineraries in many destinations.
You’ll find Norwegian ships everywhere, from the Caribbean and the Bahamas to Europe, Asia and Australia. The line is also a big player in Hawaii.
For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.
In addition, Norwegian is particularly known for cruises to Bermuda out of Boston and New York City, and it offers Canada and New England cruises regularly. It also operates some Panama Canal sailings and trips from the West Coast of the U.S. to the Mexican Riviera.
In North America, Norwegian ships sail from a relatively wide range of home ports, including Boston; New York City; Miami and Tampa; San Juan, Puerto Rico; New Orleans; San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco; Seattle; Honolulu; Vancouver, British Columbia; Quebec City and Quebec in Canada; and Seward, Alaska.
Here is a look at the best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.
Related: The ultimate guide to Norwegian Cruise Line
Some of Norwegian’s most exciting itineraries are in Europe, where the line is a significant player. It offers a wide range of itineraries in the Mediterranean and across northern Europe.
Norwegian will typically deploy around half of its 19 ships to the continent from spring to fall, making Europe its biggest focus for more than half the year. Norwegian also sometimes offers Europe cruises in the winter — albeit typically with just one ship.
Norwegian’s Mediterranean sailings provide the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona in Spain; and Florence, Rome and Naples in Italy in a single cruise. Or, you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise that focuses on the Greek Islands.
In northern Europe, Norwegian will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; and Helsinki in a single sailing.
In past years, such Baltic trips have also included a multiday call at St. Petersburg, Russia — traditionally the highlight of any Baltic sailings. However, like all major cruise lines, Norwegian pulled St. Petersburg from Baltic itineraries for 2022 and 2023 in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
As of the publishing of this guide, Norwegian had opened bookings for all of its Baltic sailing through late 2025, and St. Petersburg remains off the schedule for all of them. The line hasn’t said when it might return to St. Petersburg.
For those looking to explore northern Europe, Norwegian also offers itineraries that zero in on Iceland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Norwegian’s Europe voyages range widely in length from just three nights to a whopping 19 nights.
Among the longest sailings that Norwegian offers that include calls in Europe are one-way trips between Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens), and Dubai. Typically lasting 18 or 19 nights, these will often include stops in Israel and sometimes Greece, as well as visits to Egypt, Jordan, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
In Northern Europe, Norwegian ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, England’s Southampton and Reykjavík in Iceland.
In the Mediterranean, the line’s hubs are Barcelona, Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice in Italy, Piraeus (the port for Athens) in Greece, and Istanbul.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas
The Caribbean and the Bahamas have always been a big area of operations for Norwegian. In fact, for a long time, the regions were so much the focus that the line included “Caribbean” in its name. Up until 1987, Norwegian was known as Norwegian Caribbean Line.
These days, Norwegian usually keeps just two of its 19 vessels in the Caribbean and the Bahamas year-round (in recent years, the year-round ships have been Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape, both sailing to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Florida ports). However, it really ramps things up in the region in the winter, when it deploys a large portion of its ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.
Norwegian currently has 15 of its 19 ships scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and the Bahamas for at least part of 2024 — including its newest and most advanced ship, the 3,219-passenger Norwegian Viva.
Related: I’ve sailed on nearly every Norwegian ship. Here are my first impressions of Norwegian Prima
Norwegian offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from more than half a dozen home ports. If you’re looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of lots of quick, three- and four-night trips from Miami to the Bahamas.
It also offers an abundance of seven-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamian ports, as well as a handful of longer trips in the region that range from nine to 14 nights.
At the core of the line’s Caribbean and Bahamas program are its seven-night sailings, which break down into three broad categories:
- Eastern Caribbean voyages
- Western Caribbean voyages
- Southern Caribbean voyages
A typical seven-night Norwegian sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas.
Norwegian’s seven Western Caribbean voyages will typically include a visit to Roatan, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.
The line’s Southern Caribbean itineraries will often bring visits to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Lucia and St. Kitts. They typically begin and end in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
When sailing to the Caribbean, Norwegian ships generally sail out of Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa in Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The line also offers Caribbean sailings out of New Orleans, New York City and, occasionally, Panama City, Panama.

Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands out of Honolulu every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.
Norwegian’s Hawaii voyages are also more intensely focused on Hawaii than the Hawaii trips offered by most other lines. This is because Norwegian offers its Hawaii cruises on one of the only cruise ships in the world that meets the regulatory requirements allowing it to spend all its time in the destination.
Norwegian’s Hawaii trips take place on Norwegian’s 2,186-passenger Pride of America, which has the rare distinction of being both U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed. By law, only such a vessel can cruise full-time in Hawaii without regularly traveling long distances to foreign ports.
An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single seven-night trip.
Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on the islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului.
The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

Norwegian isn’t the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America , which are sister lines that control a large percentage of the market.
Still, Norwegian typically sends three to five vessels to Alaska every summer, and its big, activity-filled ships are a popular pick with families looking to visit the destination.
The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from May to early October.
For 2024, Norwegian plans to deploy four ships to the Alaska market for the full season:
- Norwegian Encore : Norwegian’s biggest vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It will call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
- Norwegian Sun: This ship will operate a mix of nine- to 11-night sailings to Alaska out of Seattle. The list of port calls varies based on the length of the trips.
- Norwegian Bliss : The 4,002-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. On most sailings, it will call at Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point in Alaska, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Endicott Arm for glacier viewing. Some sailings at the start and end of the season substitute a visit to Skagway and Glacier Bay National Park for the stops in Sitka and Icy Strait Point, and drop the visit to Endicott Arm.
- Norwegian Jewel. The 2,376-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seward, Alaska. The trips typically include stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, plus a visit to either Glacier Bay National Park or Icy Strait Point.
In recent years, the 2,018-passenger Norwegian Spirit also has spent its summers sailing in Alaska, but its Alaska voyages for 2024 were canceled as a result of the vessel being chartered to another company.
The appeal of the one-way sailings on Norwegian Jewel is that they can be combined with Norwegian-organized land tours of Alaska lasting from three to six days to create 10- to 13-night “cruisetours.”
The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

Norwegian usually deploys two ships on Bermuda runs every year — one out of New York City and one out of Boston.
In both cases, the sailings offered are mostly seven nights in length and include a two-night stay in Bermuda.
For 2024, Norwegian will devote one of its biggest and newest ships, the 3,802-passenger Norwegian Joy, to Bermuda. It will run out of New York. The line’s 2,394-passenger Norwegian Gem will sail to Bermuda out of Boston.
In addition, the line’s 3,969-passenger Norwegian Getaway will operate a handful of sailings to Bermuda out of New York during the early part of 2024, and the 3,963-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will operate a few sailings to Bermuda out of New York toward the end of 2024.
The line’s relatively new Norwegian Prima will operate a single Bermuda sailing out of New York at the end of 2024.
While most of Norwegian’s Bermuda sailings are seven nights in length, the line also sometimes offers a few shorter four- and five-night Bermuda sailings and, occasionally, a longer, nine-night Bermuda sailing.
Note that the shorter Bermuda sailings can offer very little time in the country, sometimes as few as nine hours.
Bottom line
Norwegian offers a wide range of itineraries in destinations around the world, from the Caribbean to Asia. However, you’ll find the most choices among Norwegian itineraries in the Caribbean and Europe.
The line is also well-known for voyages around Hawaii and to Bermuda. Its Hawaii sailings, in particular, are something of a rarity in the industry.
