Norwegian Escape Itineraries

Norwegian escape review, review of norwegian escape.

The 2015-built Norwegian Escape cruise ship is the 1st of all four Breakaway Plus-class NCL vessels - together with the sisterships Norwegian Joy (2017), Norwegian Bliss (2018) and Norwegian Encore (2019). This class of liners are approx 7000 GT tons larger in comparison to the previously biggest vessel of the line, Norwegian Epic . The NCL Escape ship cost USD 920 million to build (October 2012 ship order rates).

The vessel (IMO number 9677076) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311000341) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a subsidiary company of the shipping corporation Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH). NCL was founded in 1966, headquartered in Miami (Florida USA) and publicly traded (NASDAQ) company listed on NYSE ( NYC ). In 2017, the brand NCL had a worldwide cruise market share 8,7% (passengers) and 8,4% (revenue). NCLH (shipowner) owns the brands NCL , Oceania and RSSC-Regent .

NCL Norwegian Escape cruise ship

The 4300-passenger ship Norwegian Escape received her name in a USA TODAY contest. Guy Harvey was the lucky man chosen in 2014 to paint Escape’s hull art. Norwegian Escape has the innovative features found on Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway , as well as a number of new interactive experiences. The new 4,200-passenger miracle by NCL features an expanded Haven – the line’s concept “ship within a ship”. This space (accessible only by keycard) boasts an outdoor terrace, private restaurant, courtyard area with retractable roof pool, whirlpools, spa treatment rooms, separate sauna, private sundeck. Other differences from the Breakaway-class NCL vessels are more Haven Suites (42 to 55), 26 additional Penthouses, 14 Spa access suites, more Studio cabins (59 to 82).

The 82 Studios (designed for solo travelers) are with virtual views and exclusive access to Studio Lounge. The ship also features many family cabins (connecting staterooms) across most categories.

The boat has 20 decks , of which 16 are passenger-accessible and 12 with cabins.

Norwegian Escape Wiki

NCL Escape ship design changes ("Breakaway" compared to "Breakaway Plus" class) include 1 more passenger deck, increased number of Heaven Suites (from 42 to 55), expanded Haven and Courtyard areas, 26 more Penthouse Suites, more Studio cabins (single occupancy rooms - from 59 to 82). Fun fact is that the "Norwegian Escape" name was selected through a Facebook contest with 10 potential names options. The contest was traditionally called "Norwegians Name Their Ships", and included NCL FB fans votes. The same way company's fans picked the names of Breakaway and Getaway . Escape ship's hull theme is by Guy Harvey (marine wildlife conservationist).

NCL Norwegian Escape cruise ship construction

On September 18, 2015, started vessel's 24-hour long conveyance along Ems River (from the shipyard in Papenburg Germany to Eemshaven Holland ). Liner's christening ceremony was on November 9, 2015, lead by godfather Pitbull (rapper Armando Christian Perez). The naming ceremony was attended by NCLH's CEO Frank Del Rio. The opening act featured acrobatic Parkour performers (helped by hidden trampolines built into the stage). Then Froggy ("Elvis Duran Morning Show”) introduced various performers and VIP guests, among which was Carlos Gimenez (Miami-Dade County's Mayor). Pierside at PortMiami, the rapper Pitbull performed a live concert with some of his best hits, including “Don’t Stop the Party”, “Fireball”, "Give Me Everything”. Followed DJ-led sing-alongs.

Ship's Inaugural Cruise (maiden voyage) started on October 29, 2015. The 11-day Transatlantic crossing was from the UK to Florida ( Southampton to Miami ). On March 1, 2016, NCL announced that Escape's scheduled departure time from homeport Miami will be changed - from 4 pm to 7 pm (3 hours later). This change allows NCL cruise passengers later flights (arrivals in Miami) and applies to all the ship's 7-days Eastern Caribbean itineraries out of Miami scheduled for the period May 7 through December 31, 2016.

NCL Escape has the world's biggest marine scrubber system, consisting of all 5 units produced and installed by Yara Marine Technologies. These units clean the engines' sulfur oxide emissions by 99%. At max cruising speed, the ship's engines consume ~11 tons of diesel fuel per hour. In March 2015, Yara Marine installed its latest technology scrubber system on the Brittany Ferries ship Normandie.

The ship was built with new "scrubbers" (exhaust gas cleaning systems). The new technology reduces the equivalent of approx 1500 tons of the poisonous gas Sulfur Oxide. These in-line scrubbers (5 units) are lightweight and able to operate in a dry mode, as well as in open and closed loops.

In 2018 (starting April), NCL Escape was homeported in NYC New York , with departures from Midtown Manhattan. Currently the largest NYC-homeported cruise ship, Escape was repositioned to NYC from Miami for 7-day roundtrips to Bermuda (through September 2018) and also 7-day and longer itineraries to Florida-Bahamas and other Caribbean destinations.

Norwegian Escape Resumes Service After Drydock

  • October 12, 2022

Norwegian Escape

The Norwegian Escape is resuming service today in Civitavecchia, Italy. After spending most of September at a drydock in France, the vessel is welcoming guests for the final part of its 2022 season in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The program, which started in May , includes nine- to 11-night cruises to popular destinations in Greece, Malta, Italy and France.

The Oct. 12 departure, for instance, sails to Livorno, Naples, Messina, Valletta, Corfu, Piraeus and Santorini before returning to Civitavecchia.

Following an incident that took place earlier this year, the drydock period was confirmed by Norwegian Cruise Line in June.

At the time, the cruise line said that the ship required a shipyard visit but did not reveal the nature of the work being carried out onboard.

Previously, in March, the Norwegian Escape ran aground in the Dominican Republic during a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean .

After being refloated, the 163,000-ton ship was said to have suffered minor damage and spent a month undergoing repairs before resuming regular operations in mid-April.

The Norwegian Escape is set to return to North America following its European cruise program.

In November, the ship offers a trans-Atlantic crossing to New York City before kicking off a season in the Caribbean.

Highlighted by a visit to the Azores Archipelago, the 16-night voyage includes calls in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and the United States.

Continuing its winter program, the 4,200-guest vessel launches a series of week-long Eastern Caribbean cruises on November 19.

Departing from Port Canaveral, the regular itineraries sail to the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Before returning to its Florida homeport, the vessel also visits the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas.

Part of the Breakaway-Plus Class, the Norwegian Escape originally entered service in 2015. After nearly two years out of service due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the vessel resumed revenue operations in late 2021 .

Norwegian Cruise Line’s biggest ship to date, the Norwegian Escape, delivers plenty of onboard activities for cruisers of all ages. In fact, there is so much Norwegian Escape entertainment that trying to fit everything in during your cruise could be a challenge. That is why we have put together this insider’s guide to the Norwegian Escape entertainment. Learn more about all of the one of a kind nighttime entertainment options and start planning now so you never miss a show!

Norwegian Escape Photo Tour

An Insider’s Guide to Norwegian Escape Entertainment

Main theater signature entertainment.

Norwegian Escape boasts two signature production shows in the main theater. These shows can be booked 90 days prior to your cruise using your MyNCL account or once onboard at the box office. Reservations are limited, and while you can always go standby, we do recommend reserving these shows ahead of time to ensure you get to see them.

After Midnight

Based on the Broadway hit, this musical transports you to 1920’s Harlem and the real life Cotton Club. Get engrossed in the song and dance of this high energy production with some amazing costumes and sets.

Norwegian Escape Entertainment

The show lasts about 90 minutes and features a series of singers and dancers with a heavy emphasis on tap dance and jazz music from composers including Ellington and Calloway. During our sailing on Norwegian Escape, the cast of After Midnight was excellent but the lack of story line did detract from the total performance. The production was shown a total of four times, twice on two different nights of our 7 day cruise (Day 2 and Day 6).

The Brat Pack

Calling all 80’s kids. The Brat Pack takes you back to your childhood, featuring classic movies of the era like The Breakfast Club,  Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Weird Science, and more.

Norwegian Escape Photo Tour

We sailed on Norwegian Escape when this show was part of the Supper Club. More recently, the production has been made into a show in the main theater. Most of the plot remains the same with the main difference being that the show is now complimentary. We really enjoyed the show and highly recommend you check it out. Similar to the second Broadway show that was offered on our cruise, it is likely that this show will play on two different nights of your cruise, with an early and late show. On our sailing, Million Dollar Quartet was featured on Day 3 and Day 4. Million Dollar Quartet has now been moved to Getaway to make room for The Brat Pack in the Main Theater.

Other Main Theater Entertainment

There is plenty more Norwegian Escape entertainment in the main theater too that is on a first come, first serve basis. There was a Welcome Aboard Variety show that took place at 7:30pm on Day 1. On our sailing, there was also a comedy show on Day 5, featuring the same comedians from Headliner’s (see below) doing different material with an early and late night showtime offered. On the last night, your crew goes the extra mile with the International Crew Talent Show held in the Main Theater.

Norwegian Escape Photo Tour

Headliner’s Comedy Club

The Norwegian Escape entertainment is not housed solely in the main theater. In fact, many different venues throughout the ship offer nightly shows. Headliner’s Comedy Club is a small venue that holds two different shows, rotating over the 7 nights of the cruise.

Norwegian Esape Bars

On our cruise, Headliner’s acted as the comedy club on Night 1, Night 3, and Night 6. On these nights, the two resident comedians would switch off with one comedian doing a 7pm and 11pm (adult) show and the other comedian doing one show at 9pm. Unfortunately, when pre-reserving the comedy shows at home, there is no way of knowing which comedian will be doing which set. We used daily schedules  found online to guesstimate which comedian would be doing which shows to attempt to book a viewing of each one and got lucky. Since the venue is small, we recommend making reservations ahead of time; if all else fails, you can always go standby.

Norwegian Escape Entertainment

On Night 2, Night 4, Night 5, and Night 7, the club doubles as the dueling piano bar, Howl at the Moon. While the inside of the venue remains the same, the stage comes alive with some sing along fun.

Norwegian Escape Secrets

The show usually starts around 8pm or 9pm and runs until midnight or later. On our cruise, there were three piano players who rotated playing, singing, and bantering with each other and the crowd. All three performers were solid, but the energy of the show really depended on the crowd. No reservations can be made for Howl at the Moon, and the crowd typically comes and goes throughout the evening.

Game Shows and Atrium Entertainment

Throughout your cruise, the Atrium, located on Deck 6, will host a variety of dance classes, trivia contests, movies, and demonstrations, not to mention the behind the stage staff Q&A and a host of other Norwegian Escape entertainment. Catching one of these activities is a great way to take a break from the Caribbean sun, so check your daily schedule for a complete listing.

Norwegian Escape Photo Tour

The Atrium is also home to a variety of game shows throughout your cruise. These are often quite comical, and seating fills up fast. Getting “balcony seats” near O’Sheehan’s Pub on Deck 7 can offer a great vantage point to all of the craziness.

Here is a list of all the game shows offered on our 7 Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise :

  • Day 1 – Majority Rules 8:30pm
  • Day 2 – Newlywed Not so Newlywed Game 8:30pm
  • Day 3 – Sing it if You Know it 8:30pm
  • Day 3 – Ultimate Dance Clash 10:15pm
  • Day 4 – Deal or No Deal 8:30pm
  • Day 5 – Jeopardy Live Game Show  8:30pm
  • Day 6 – 55 to Stay Alive Game Show 7:45pm
  • Day 6 – Deal or No Deal 8:30pm
  • Day 7 – The Perfect Couples Game Show 8:30pm

Dance Parties

Norwegians know how to party. That is probably why they give away so many beverage packages on these ships. Among the most popular Norwegian Escape entertainment offerings are the dance parties happening throughout the ship. These usually start around 10:15pm, but the crowds really don’t show up until 11pm or so. If you are looking for a seat, get there early; otherwise, be prepared to dance the night away!

Norwegian Escape Entertainent

Here is the rundown of parties that occured on our cruise:

  • Night 1 – Welcome Aboard Dance Party in the Skyline Bar
  • Night 2 – Norwegian’s Big Night Out Dance Party in Spice H20
  • Night 3 – Fiesta Latin Dance Party in the Atrium
  • Night 5 – Awesome 80’s Party in Spice H20
  • Night 6 – Glow Party in Spice H20
  • Night 7 – R&B Party in Spice H20

Norwegian Escape Entertainent

There is just so much to do that it’s impossible to catch all of the parties. We did attend the Awesome 80’s Party and the Glow Party, both were well attended and a blast.

There is also plenty of live music to be found throughout the ship. Unlike other ships, many of the acts rotate through the venues. On our cruise, there were a couple additional piano players (not part of Howl at the Moon) who would play sets in the Atrium or District Brew House. There was also a three piece band and a singing duo which could be found at different times in either the Skyline Bar, 5 O’clock Somewhere, or the Atrium. Again, check the daily schedules for exact times and locations as they do change throughout the week.

Norwegian Escape Cruise Review

The Supper Club

If you do not mind paying for some Norwegian Escape entertainment, then we suggest purchasing tickets to the Supper Club. This dinner review show now features a Cabaret performance; on our January 2016 cruise, it featured the Brat Pack. We felt the show was worth the upcharge (even if the dinner was not up to par).

Norwegian Escape Photo Tour

During our cruise, there was at least one performance of the Supper Club each night. Since we did not experience the new show, we can not comment on the quality.

Even More Norwegian Escape Entertainment

If all of the shows and activities are still not enough for you, there is more nighttime fun to be had. From a late night dip in the hot tub to trying your luck at the casino, or challenging your loved one to a friendly bar game in O’Sheehan’s Bar and Grill, there are seemingly endless options.

Norwegian Escape Photo Tour

If all of this entertainment is making you tired just thinking about it, you could just relax on your balcony or in the Thermal Suite for the evening. After all, this is your vacation!

What is your favorite among the Norwegian Escape entertainment offerings? What shows or acts are you excited to see on this ship? Drop us an anchor below to share your experiences on this brand new class of ship.

We will have 2 full days to sightsee in Moscow in June prior to a cruise and would welcome recommendations. We are traveling independently and will have a guide for 2 days. We will also have a car and driver on 1 of those days.

We plan to see the Kremlin, St. Basil's Cathedral, Lenin's mausoleum, GUM Department Store, the Metro and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. What else should we try to include?

The Kremlin is enormous; what should we be sure to visit?

Unfortunately, it looks as though the Bolshoi will not be performing during our dates, but the circus will be in town. Has anyone seen the Moscow circus? Tickets online are about $100. Worthwhile?

Our hotel is the Moscow Marriott Tverskaya. Has anyone stayed there?

Any recommendations for restaurants or Russian foods to sample?

Hi, Colleen! THANKS for posting this Moscow thread! We did a one-day, fly to Moscow and back, one-day tour from our 2008 cruise ship docking in St. Petersburg. It was a long day and there was lots of time taken in the logistics in and out of this large city of twelve million people, but it all worked well. It was worth visiting there.

As you can see by the pictures below we were focused more around the Kremlin, Red Square, etc. We also did the subway, which was very interesting and beautiful, plus seeing some other well-known structures, including the KGB Headquarters, Bolshoi Theatre, the Stalin-era government towers, etc.

The Kremlin includes many different buildings , but there are a few that are very important. At the top of the list, but not easy to just walk in without special arrangements, is the spectacular Kremlin Palace. Its rooms are large and historically significant. This is where the Czars were crowned and the place where current Russian Presidents are sworn in, hold their receptions, sign treaties, etc. Kremlin’s State Armoury, with the famed eggs & jewels, is a must see. Cathedral Square has three cathedrals within the 68 acres of the Kremlin with its walls and twenty historic towers. The Cathedral of the Annunciation was completed in 1489. Ivan the Great Bell Tower is on this Cathedral Square and is said to mark the exact centre of Moscow. It resemble a burning candle and was completed in 1600. It is 266 ft. high and was, until the 20th Century, the tallest structure in Moscow.

Your hotel is at a little distance for the historic heart of Moscow. Do you want to see some of their art museums and other collections within this town? Will you have a guide for part of your visit to Moscow? That might be helpful to navigate and understand a city where the signs and language are not all user friendly. Let us know your added question and reactions. Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Thank you for the wonderful pictures of Moscow!!!! We will also be taking a one day tour of Moscow thru Celebrity. We are so looking forward to it. I did not know that we might stop at Gum Department Store, that would be awesome. Anything else we should be on the look out for??

Thank you for taking the time to post your beautiful photos.

We booked through Mir Travel & have arranged for a driver and guide. We'll arrive in Moscow on a Monday and leave on Thursday for Istanbul. We applied for our independent Russian visas this week, a somewhat time consuming but required process.

I'll check with Mir to see that arrangements have been made for us to see the areas of the Kremlin that you mentioned, particularly the Faberge eggs.

I know that the location of the Marriott Tverskaya isn't as close to Red Square as we might like, but the hotel prices in Moscow are shockingly expensive, among the highest anywhere.

Keep posting your marvelous photos.

THANKS to Laura and Colleen for the nice comments! Much appreciated. On GUM Department Store, it sets right on Red Square and is easy to enter and check out it interior. It looks more and more westernized with its shops, dining options, etc., on the inside. The outside of it is a large, massive late 1800's structure. A new Coach shop was getting ready to open there in the fall of 2008. The State Armoury is great and it is fairly easy to go into there. The Kremlin Palace is the superstar that is much harder to tour. Push for that one, if possible. Read up on the history of Faberge and their production techniques, etc. We had a ship presentation on that background that was very helpful.

I would encourage Colleen to read up ahead on Moscow and push your tour folks to consider carefully your many options. I really like the Eyewitness books that have an excellent mix of text, history, photos, maps, building cut-aways, etc. YES, Moscow is very costly for its hotels. Below are a few more visual previews. Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.
