Nusa Penida Trip & Tips: How to Get Around the Island Without Booking a Tour in Advance

Long before I made my way to visit Bali , I've heard a lot of good stuff about the three small islands around the province: Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan , and Nusa Ceningan. The popular term among tourists that I've heard about them is that some people refer to them as “ Nusa islands “.

The three islands have gained popularity in the past few years, and it's not without reason that they have. First, the local people really appreciate the effort of the current government to promote the tourism in the area. Plus, the islands are less touristy than the main Bali island. And that's also the reason why I included Nusa Penida when I created my itinerary in Bali .

There are so many day trip tours available to Nusa Penida from Bali , Indonesia. However, you can also travel to Nusa Penida without booking a tour pretty easily. In fact, I highly recommend staying in Nusa Penida for a day or two to maximize your experience around the island!

Nusa Penida and Why You May Want to Visit the Island

Thanks to Instagram, I guess it is actually one of the reasons why Nusa Penida has become one of the bucket list for those who are interested in going to Bali. There are some instagrammable spots that have gained their popularity since a lot of people did it for the ‘gram.

The local people in Nusa Penida used to farm seaweed in the past, but these days since their tourism industry has been growing, most people are rerouting their source of income to it.

Other than that, Nusa Penida is also a great alternative for anyone coming to Bali and seeking for a place that is less crowded but still has a lot to offer. But mind you, as I mentioned before… Almost everything in Nusa Penida is more expensive than the Bali mainland.

Although it actually makes a lot of senses, given the idea that it is somewhat off-the-beaten-path around Bali. And the place has gained its recognition recently.

Nusa Penida Tour: Is It Possible to Get Around Without Booking a Tour?

If you check some options to visit Nusa Penida or the other islands through the internet, you will find a lot of tour packages that you can choose at various prices as well. As far as I'm concerned, the tour package usually starts from IDR 300,000 (around $21 USD) per pax.

While I know some of you may find it cheap, as an Indonesian myself I still find it quite expensive. Especially since I was traveling with my brother and my mom at the time. What I did was a little bit of luck and 100% gambling, but I'm glad that I decided not to book a tour in advance when I went to Nusa Penida.

A few days before I went to Nusa Penida, I actually considered booking a tour in Nusa Penida for around IDR 1,500,000 (around $106 USD) which includes the full package of tour getting around the island. But I was hesitant to do it, so then I decided to just book the boat ticket and get any tour package that I could find by the time I arrive on the island.

Is it possible? The answer is yes, it is.

What to Expect When You Go to Nusa Penida Without Booking a Tour

Mind you, if you haven't booked a tour in advance by the time you got to the island then you might have to face some annoying stuff… A lot of people would approach you to offer their tour packages, and even if you're interested in one of them, you might still have to haggle about the price. That being side, this method is not for everyone, but it is for me. šŸ˜›

Once I got off the board from the boat, a lot of people approached me to offer their services so I just randomly told them that I needed a car since I was traveling with my family. To be fair, I'm a local Indonesian so I suppose it was easier for me to haggle and all that.

Long story short, I got Bli Made from Penida Oke Tour as our driver and tour guide during our stay in Nusa Penida. He offered me 3 (three) tour options.

The first is West Nusa Penida which includes Angel Billabong, Broken Beach, the famous Klingking Beach and Crystal Bay. Or else, we could also opt for East Nusa Penida tour in which the destinations include Atuh Beach, Diamond Beach, the treehouse or what we Indonesians call “ rumah pohon ” and Teletubbies Hills. In addition to that, we could also choose the complete tour package to explore both sides of the island.

I gotta admit, when I decided to go to Nusa Penida, there's only one place in mind that is somewhat very basic: Klingking Beach. The spot, especially that dinosaur-shaped hill around the beach, is so popular among travelers. Especially on Instagram. So when I got offered the package option, I picked the West Nusa Penida tour since our budget wasn't enough to do the complete one.

We got the West Nusa Penida tour package for IDR 700,000 (around $50 USD), the price that Bli Made said special for the local visitors. Apart from the tour, we also hired him for the transport to and from our accommodation for IDR 100,000 (around $7 USD). I got it for the price, but please be mindful that the price is subject to change. šŸ˜‰

West Nusa Penida Tour: The Places You'll Visit on the Western Part of the Island

The other reason why I chose West Nusa Penida tour without hesitation was that only a day before our arrival to the island, I read the news about the death of a Malaysian traveler around Diamond Beach . To be honest, it made me a bit nervous about visiting the island, and it somewhat affected my mood to swim on the island too.

The next day when we did our tour, I was wearing bikini inside my shirt and shorts but I ended up not swimming at all. Not because of the news per se, but I'll elaborate later in this post.

So, where did we go for West Nusa Penida Tour? How was it? Was it worth it? Let's find out!

1. Angel Billabong

According to Bli Made, our guide on the island, apart from the efforts of the local government to promote their tourism, the popularity of Nusa Penida has been recognized since there were some groups of the student from the public university in Bali, Universitas Udayana , went there for praktek kerja lapangan .

Literally means fieldwork practice in Indonesian, praktek kerja lapangan is basically a social activity that is mandatory for most of the university students in Indonesia. I said most of the university students in Indonesia, because I was one of them but it wasn't compulsory for me since I went to a private university. I never did it myself, so yeah… #richkidproblemslol

It was also the students that recognize some of the tourist spots we came to know now, and they were also the ones that have given the name for each tourism spot in Nusa Penida.

For example, Angel Billabong was the first spot that we visited when we did the West Nusa Penida Tour. They named it Angel Billabong as the locals believe that the small pond in the area is where all the angels landed to take a bath and relax for a while.

Believe it or not, it is now forbidden for visitors to swim or get inside the swim due to some accidents that happened in the past whenever someone made an attempt to do so. Due to numerous accidents that took place around the pond, the locals even built a small temple around the pond in order to protect both the locals and visitors that come to the area.

2. Broken Beach

This was named Broken Beach due to the shape of the rock around the sea that looks broken with a hole. Despite being named Broken Beach, this is not exactly the kind of beach where you can go swimming. You can hardly go down to the beach itself.

Besides, it is highly recommended for you to go to this area in the morning since the water would raise upfront in the afternoon where it could be dangerous for you to stroll around.

Angel Billabong and Broken Beach are actually in the same area, where you could just go hiking for a bit from Angel Billabong to get to Broken Beach.

And even though you can't swim around here, the place is so full of instagrammable spots. Just be mindful and careful when it comes to the spot you choose to take pics. It's basically around cliffs, so always make sure that you take a pic good enough to brag on Instagram and safe enough for you to stay alive! šŸ˜›

Still though, I love this Broken Beach. I mean, I was really wowing when I saw the sea from the area for the first time. The water is turquoise and pretty much like me, it looks both beautiful and dangerous at the same time. šŸ˜› #agirlcanbrag

Bonus point as our guide, Bli Made, knows the best spots to take photos so yeah… We have a lot of good pics to upload for the ‘gram in the area!

3. Klingking Beach and Paluang Cliff

And this, this is the spot that is probably most seen by all Instagram user when they searched for Nusa Penida: Klingking Beach. It takes around 30-minute drive to Klingking from Angel Billabong/Broken Beach.

Klingking in Indonesian actually means little or pinkie finger, so I'm not sure whether they were named so because that dinosuar-shaped hill looks slightly like pinkie finger. Still, I think it looks more like a dinosaur.

But anyway, the different between Broken Beach and Klingking Beach is that on Klingking Beach, you can actually go down to swim or just sunbath as the beach is idyllic and looking so pretty down there.

However, I couldn't speak for myself for the experience as the beach is located all down there that I was tired just by looking at the stairs. LOL.

Bli Made convinced us that it took around an hour to go down, but with my capability to do some cardio, I think it would take me at least half a day to get there. So really, I skipped the opportunity all at once because the heart knows what it wants and it was only to take a pic as proof that I've been there . šŸ˜›

Instead, we continued our way to Paluang Cliff that is located around 5-minute drive from Klingking. Here, we could take a pic of Klingking view from another area. Well, it is basically the less crowded instagrammable spot if you want to have a pic with Klingking view. Because you know that pic of influencer around the dinosaur-shaped thingy view? You actually gotta queue to take a pic or two!

4. Crystal Bay

It took around 30 minutes from Klingking Beach to get to Crystal Bay. According to Bli Made, Crystal Bay is also one of the most popular starting points for travelers who are interested to do snorkeling with Manta Rays around Nusa Penida.

I was planning to at least get into the water by the time I got there, but when I arrived… Totally canceled! šŸ˜›

It was super crowded, that my introvert side just had to scream and get away from it to hide. HAHA. So, instead of swimming or doing anything related to the water at Crystal Bay, I just stopped by some kiosks around the beach to sit down and relax. We also enjoyed some roasted corn while chatting about some random stuff.

And this one over here, it made me realize how much more expensive Nusa Penida is compared to Bali the mainland. For example, while waiting for my boat to Nusa Penida from Sanur, I also enjoyed some roasted corn near the port. I only paid for IDR 5,000 (around $.35 cents) for one corn… Guess how much I paid for one in Nusa Penida? IDR 30,000 (around $2.1 USD)!

It sounds like a scam, but alright…

Nusa Penida Tips: Things You Need to Know Before Strolling Around the Island

There are plenty of options for a day trip from Bali to Nusa Penida. And while it is possible to do it, I would recommend you to stay for a night or two on the island. I stayed for 3 days and 2 nights, and only spent a day exploring the island with the rest of my time, I just stayed at the accommodation. I also went for some evening stroll around my accommodation, accompanied by a stray dog around the area.

So, what tips do I have for you, now that you're probably interested in visiting Nusa Penida?

1. Instead of doing a day trip, stay overnight around the island.

If you're into a lowkey trip that could allow you to relax and get in a quiet place, a couple of days in Nusa Penida are really recommended. In fact, if you asked me about the highlight of my Bali trip, I suppose I'd answer Nusa Penida. This was the place that I genuinely enjoyed, despite the fact of how expensive things were around the island.

3 days 2 nights will be enough if you're planning to do the whole package of Nusa Penida tour, both east and west side. But since we only did it for the west part, I think we could have done 2 days and 1 night with no problem. Not that I regret my decision though, since the time spent on the island allowed me to chill for a bit.

It was also helpful that my accommodation was super cozy, that I could even finish some work with no distraction. Imagine working on some projects with the view of Mount Agung in front of you! Well, that was exactly what happened during my stay in Nusa Penida. šŸ˜‰

2. Start early to avoid traffic jams.

See, when I said Nusa Penida is quieter and less touristy compared to mainland Bali, it didn't mean it was immune to traffic jams. It's like, you gain some and you lose some… In that context, Nusa Penida is more like an off-the-beaten-path compared to Bali the mainland.

However, the infrastructure in Nusa Penida isn't as advanced as in Bali. There are some roads that barely fit for 2 cars, and those roads are basically the main route that you should take if you want to go to the main destinations like Angel Billabong and Broken Beach.

There are some new infrastructures in progress, but it won't be done until at least next year. So if you're planning to go there earlier in 2020, the mantra is to always start early and it's highly recommended to do the tour following the sequence mentioned above: Angel Billabong, Broken Beach, Klingking Beach, and Crystal Bay.

We started as early as at 8AM from our accommodation, and we spent around 2 hours alone on the way back from Angel Billabong/Broken Beach spot. It may be easier if you're planning to rent a scooter to get around. But even that, please be careful since the track around Nusa Penida can be quite tricky.

3. Bring your own snacks.

I mean, obviously since I'm a snack eater myself. Just gotta put this as one of the tips, because unlike mainland Bali where you can easily find the nearest mini-market, Nusa Penida isn't like that. Or maybe it really depends on where you stay.

My accommodation (I'll do the review later) is a bit far from the main road on the island and we basically had no other option other than the snacks sold at our accommodation. Even for meals, we mostly ordered it from our accommodation. Nusa Penida, unlike the mainland Bali where you could easily order food through delivery, hasn't got that kind of privilege. That, unless you rent a scooter that allows you to explore the island on your own.

Also, even though the island is less crowded with travelers, you could still find some bars to hang out. Some of the popular ones, as Bli Made recommended, are Kul de Sak and Penida Colada Beach Bar.

4. Be ready for cash.

If it's possible, please withdraw enough cash from mainland Bali since there's not plenty of ATMs in Nusa Penida. As you probably know already, I'm Indonesian and of course, I use some Indonesian banks. However, I couldn't find my bank ATMs in Nusa Penida. As far as I could find, there are only two banks with ATMs available on the island: Bali local bank and Bank Mandiri.

Good thing that my brother has his Mandiri account, so we didn't have to deal with an extra fee to withdraw from a different bank.

5. There's a remuneration fee for international tourists who enter Nusa Penida that would costs you IDR 25,000.

Well, yes… As an Indonesian, I couldn't relate as I could enter Nusa Penida for free. For now.

But if you're an international tourist planning to visit Nusa Penida, please expect a remuneration fee for IDR 25,000 (around $2 USD) per person. Started from July this year, this regulation has been applied for international tourists only.

I gotta admit that the staff and the regulation might seem a bit scattered, but it is apparently a legit regulation that has been legalized by the local government.

The Verdict: Nusa Penida Trip Without Booking a Tour in Advance

To be honest, I couldn't be more thrilled!

Compared to the options I've found on the internet, the trip I had with Penida Oke Tour and Bli Made was the best deal that I could ever come up around Nusa Penida.

If I booked a tour in advance for Nusa Penida trip, I might have spent around IDR 1,000,000 (around $70 USD) that only covers the West Nusa Penida tour. But for this, I only spent IDR 700,000 for the three of us and my mom even got to order some cashews to bring back home from Bli Made. FYI, yes… Cashew is one of the popular products on the island too.

So, have you been to Nusa Penida before? Or are you planning your trip to the island? Let me know your idea in the comment below, and cheerio! šŸ™‚

Is Nusa Penida Worth a Visit?

Absolutely! Nusa Penida is not just a destination; it’s a mosaic of experiences. From the adrenaline rush of exploring rugged terrains to the tranquillity of secluded beaches, every corner of the island promises something unique. Whether you’re hiking to breathtaking viewpoints or diving into the rich marine world, Nusa Penida offers a blend of adventure and serenity that caters to every kind of traveller.

What to Do on Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida can roughly be divided into two parts: the West and the East, each offering its own unique blend of breathtaking vistas, adventurous hikes, and pristine beaches. While the Western side of Nusa Penida has long been celebrated for its iconic landscapes, including the famous T-Rex shaped cliff of Kelingking Beach, the Eastern part of the island is an uncharted paradise, just as mesmerizing and filled with hidden gems.

Below we list the best places to explore on both ends of the island.

What to do on the West of Nusa Penida Island

Discover the t-rex cliff of kelingking beach.

Kelingking Beach , named after its resemblance to a ‘little finger’, is famed for its T-Rex shaped cliff and amazing yellow sand, drawing tourists worldwide. This spot is highly popular, so the best times to visit are early morning before 11:00 am or after 16:00 pm to avoid the crowds from day tours.

Bali 26

The descent to the beach is an adventurous climb, improved but still challenging. It requires good physical fitness and caution due to its steep nature.

Also be aware that many monkeys roam the hills especially in the morning hours. Itā€™s best to keep them on a distance, as they can be cheeky and may steal your sunglasses and other things easy to grab.

Marvel at the Unique Rock Formations of Broken Beach and Angelā€™s Billabong

The rugged, moonlike landscape of Angelā€™s Billabong and Broken Beach, lay directly next to each other and can be visited in one go. Broken Beach is a captivating place, due to its natural arch over the sea. You can often spot manta rays and dolphins swimming in the waters below, adding to its magical ambiance.

Bali 16

Angelā€™s Billabong is a natural infinity pool youā€™ll surely encounter on your way to Broken Beach. This place is equally stunning but warrants caution. Unexpected waves can crash in, making swimming here potentially dangerous. Enjoy its beauty from a safe distance, especially during high tide or rough sea conditions.

Serene waters of Angel's Billabong in Nusa Penida framed by rugged limestone formations under a vibrant blue sky with wispy clouds.

Snorkel with Manta Rays

Another thing you do not want to miss on the Western side of Nusa Penida, is the wonder of swimming with manta rays in crystal-clear waters. These gentle giants are often found here due to the rich plankton content in the water.

The best time to see them is during the dry season, from April to October. We have done this activity twice, once in January which happened to be perfect and once in December, with no mantas to be found. Weather conditions also play a role; calm and clear days are ideal.

To snorkel with the manta rays, you can book a guided tour. These are available when you are staying on the island of Nusa Penida itself , but they can also be done from Bali , especially Sanur.

Discover the Beauty of Crystal Bay Above and Below Water

Crystal Bay is another amazing bay on Nusa Penida. This place is not only a fantastic snorkelling spot with vibrant corals and tropical fish but also a place where you might spot the elusive mola mola (sunfish) during the right season.

Above water, it’s a paradise for sunset lovers, offering breathtaking views as the sun dips below the horizon and behind the beautiful natural arch.

Sunset at Crystal Bay in Nusa Penida, highlighting the rocky islet against the vibrant evening sky with waves lapping the shore.

A less-crowded snorkeling haven, Gamat Bay is perfect for those looking to explore vibrant underwater life in a more serene setting. This bay is often visited during snorkelling tours on Nusa Penida, but one does not necessarily need to visit this place per boat. You can also visit the beach here and snorkel from there.

Amok Sunset

Complete your day exploring the West of Nusa Penida at Amok Sunset , an idyllic location known for its stunning sunsets and amazing deserts. The sky’s transformation into shades of gold and crimson here is truly a photographer’s delight.

What to do on The East of Nusa Penida Island

Take unparalleled photos at diamond beach.

Diamond Beach , with its dramatic cliffs and sparkling sands, offers some of the best photo opportunities on the island. The natural staircase carved into the cliff provides access to this stunning beach, though the descent requires caution.

Sunrise illuminating the pristine Diamond Beach and its surrounding cliffs on Nusa Penida with the day's first light.

Although an absolute gem, Diamond Beach has become more popular over the past few years, so this is again a place you may want to visit early to beat the crowds. Yet, this place too is brimming with monkeys. As we experienced, they are not aggressive but it is best to keep your distance.

Relax at Atuh Beach

Adjacent to Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach is a more laid-back spot, ideal for relaxation and sunbathing. It offers more amenities than its neighbour, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely day by the sea.

Experience Breathtaking Views at Thousand Island Viewpoint

This viewpoint offers one of the most iconic views in Nusa Penida. The famous Molateng treehouse here provides a unique photo opportunity, but be prepared for a climb to reach this spot. Arriving early, around 7:00 am, is advisable to beat the crowds and have a more peaceful experience.

This place is quite well known for being one of the best photography spots on the planet, which means that generally speaking it is visited by about 200 people a day. This means that during peak hours you will only get about 2 minutes to take pictures.

Venture Further off the Beaten Path to Teletubbies Hill

Teletubbies Hill , named after its resemblance to the rolling hills from the children’s show, showcases the diverse landscape of Nusa Penida. It’s a tranquil spot, perfect for enjoying the island’s natural beauty away from the tourist trails.

It is quite near to Diamond Beach and Thousand Island Viewpoint, so perfect to add as a stop when visiting these other amazing places.

How Long Do You Need to Explore Nusa Penida Island?

As always the answer to this question depends on your own wishes and schedule.

If you ask us: Can Nusa Penida be done in one day? The only way to do this is to pre-book a tour that will take you to the highlights of the West and/or the East , both can be done in one day but be ware that it will be a packed tour and youā€™ll not be able to visit all the places listed here above.

It will also be difficult to combine a visit to the amazing coastline of Nusa Penida with the snorkelling with the manta rays, but there are some tours that do offer a combination of the two .

Golden sunlight bathing the rugged cliffs of Nusa Penida with the shimmering ocean extending into the horizon during sunset.

If you have time available, we recommend to stay at least three full days on Nusa Penida, one for snorkelling, one to discover the West of the island and one day to discover the East. This will provide enough time to get to know the island a little bit more intimately, relax and soak up some amazing sunsets.

How to Get to Nusa Penida from Bali?

To get to Nusa Penida from Bali you best take a speedboat or ferry from Sanur harbour. These can easily be booked here . The ride to Nusa Penida will take about 30 minutes and cost somewhere between $6 and $10.

Not all ferries are created equal on Bali, for a smooth transit we recommend Angel Billabong.

Stay in Style: Nusa Penida Hotels and Resorts

Nusa Penida may be smaller than Bali, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm and intrigue. Given the island’s somewhat challenging terrain and bumpy roads, where travel often takes longer than expected, selecting the right accommodation is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Stays in West Nusa Penida

Our recommendation is to at least stay a night or two on the West of the island, where you find the most famous sites like Kelingking Beach, Angelā€™s Billabong, and popular snorkelling spots teeming with manta rays. Here, accommodation options cater to a range of preferences and budgets.

For a luxurious stay, ‘ Atalaya ‘ is an exceptional choice. We had a memorable experience at this high-end villa, where comfort meets elegance. For those seeking more economical options, The Tinsi offers cozy and affordable lodging, ensuring a comfortable stay without breaking the bank.

For a unique and upscale experience, Autentik Penida “Glamping” provides a glamorous camping (glamping) experience with breathtaking views. It’s an ideal choice for those who want to enjoy the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort.

Additionally, West Nusa Penida is home to MAUA Nusa Penida , the islandā€™s most magnificent retreat. While staying here may cost a few hundred dollars per night, it promises an unparalleled experience of luxury and exclusivity, perfect for special occasions or those looking to splurge on an extravagant getaway.

Maua Nusa Penida

Stays in East Nusa Penida

To make your travelling on Nusa Penida as effective as possible, it is also advisable to stay one night on the East of the island. This area tends to offer more budget-friendly accommodations.

Near the stunning Diamond Beach, options like Atuh Forest Cottage allow you to immerse yourself in nature. Here, forest cottages are available for less than $25 a night, offering a serene and rustic experience.

Renting a Scooter or Motorbike

For the more adventurous, renting a scooter or motorbike offers the freedom to explore Nusa Penida at your own pace. However, it’s important to note that the island’s roads can be challenging, with steep inclines, sharp turns, and occasionally rough surfaces.

Prior experience with driving a scooter or motorbike is essential for safety. Always wear a helmet, drive cautiously, and be prepared for unexpected road conditions. If you’re not confident in your riding abilities, it’s best to consider other transportation options.

Also note that insurance from your home country may not provide coverage if you drive a scooter with more power than your driving licence allows. Make sure you have the correct driving licences and insurance.

Hired Cars with Drivers

For those preferring a more relaxed way to travel, hiring a car with a driver is an excellent choice. Local drivers are knowledgeable about the best routes and can navigate the island’s tricky roads with ease. This option allows you to enjoy the scenic views and attractions without the stress of driving.

Guided Tours

Opting for guided tours can be a hassle-free way to see the island. These tours often include transportation as part of the package, making it a convenient choice for those who want to visit multiple sites without worrying about directions or transport logistics.

Public Transportation

While Nusa Penida doesn’t have an extensive public transportation system, there are some local shuttle services available. These are more suitable for short distances and might not cover all tourist destinations, but they can be a budget-friendly option for getting around.

Safety and Comfort Tips

No matter which transportation option you choose, always prioritize safety and comfort. Bring along sun protection, stay hydrated, and take breaks during your journey to enjoy the stunning views Nusa Penida has to offer.

The Ultimate Guide to Nusa Penida [2024]

Everything you need to know to plan your trip, including how to avoid the crowds..

The Ultimate Guide to Nusa Penida [2024]

Nusa Penida , just off the coast of Bali, is one of our favourite places to visit. The views are epic, it's not packed with villas yet, and the local culture here is fascinating & different from mainland Bali.

Here's everything you need to know to plan your trip - from whether it's worth your time, to how to get there and how to avoid the crowds.

TLDR: Nusa Penida is getting more crowded, but still worth visiting because the views are gorgeous. For the best experience, we'd highly recommend spending the night here , and going to East Penida . Skip snorkelling unless you're a strong swimmer.

1. The Basics

Is nusa penida worth visiting.

See the beautiful island paradise of Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a complicated place. It's become increasingly popular in recent years thanks to IG, and many travellers have complained about needing to queue up at view points, and unsafe snorkelling practices.

We think it's still worth going if you love nature and outdoors because Nusa Penida is still one of the most beautiful places in Bali. If you have the time, you should spend a night or two here because you'll get to experience it away from the crowds and get to know the local community here.

What to See & Do at Nusa Penida

Most travellers go to Nusa Penida for its epic viewpoints

Nusa Penida is known for its epic viewpoints, snorkelling and diving. People usually go to West Nusa Penida for beach hopping & snorkelling at IG-hotspots like Kelingking Beach, Angel Billabong & Broken Beach (more below).

But what we really love about Nusa Penida is that it reminds us of Bali before mass tourism (if you stay after the daytrippers have left!). We love the tight-knit, heartfelt community here, the gorgeous local villages and the off-grid places still to be found on East Nusa Penida (see Points of Interest below).

How Much Time Do You Need

To really see the beauty of Nusa Penida, we'd highly recommend staying overnight

If you are looking to swing by the top sights for nice photos or don't have a lot of time, a day tour from Bali will suffice. This means that you'll be visiting the attractions at the same time as everyone else though so it'll be more crowded and touristy. If you're only visiting for a day and want to avoid the crowds, we'd recommend going to East Penida , which is less crowded and authentic.

Insider Tip: If you prefer to experience the local way of life, and see Nusa Penida's epic viewpoints without the crowds, we highly recommend coming here for at least 2 days .

Best Time to Go

Try to go during dry season between April to November, as most of the sights are outdoors and you may not get great pictures if it rains. But if you don't mind the rain you can visit Nusa Penida anytime really!

Manta rays can be seen all year round in Nusa Penida, but the best time to see them is from May to October. During this time, the water is calm and clear, and the manta rays are more active.

2. Getting There

Taking a boat from bali.

Most travellers would hop on a fast boat from Sanur in Bali to Nusa Penida

To get to Nusa Penida, you will need to take a 35-45 minutes' boat ride from Bali. You can get your boat tickets at the jetty, or buy it in advance .

Boat rides depart from Pantai Matahari Terbit Harbour in Sanur (main port) and Kusamba Port in Kusamba Beach. Sanur is the main port in Bali and has more frequent boat departures, and more modern jetties. If you're coming from the east side of Bali, you can go to Kusamaba Port, but the departures are less frequent.

Most of the fast boats located in Sanur leave at around 7.30am and then again during the mid morning around 10am, followed by an afternoon departure around 2.30pm or 3.30pm. They come back to Bali in clusters from 8am to 10am and 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

Hiring a Guide

Get a local to take you around and support Nusa Penida's local community!

While it is possible to get around Nusa Penida without a guide, we'd highly recommend getting one to support the local economy , and to take you to hidden gems that most travellers don't get to see .

Insider Tip: Do note though that the tourism industry in Nusa Penida isnā€™t as mature as the rest of Bali, so most guides for the tour companies offering trips to Nusa Penida donā€™t speak much English.

Getting Around Nusa Penida Island

There are three ways to get around Nusa Penida:

  • Book a guide in advance . This is the best option if you want to see hidden spots and have a more personalized experience. Your guide will arrange your round trip transfer from Bali (including hotel pick-up and boat transfers), take you around Nusa Penida by car, and share their knowledge of the island with you.
  • Hire a driver on the beach at Nusa Penida. You can also hire a car or scooter driver to take you around when you get to Nusa Penida. This is what most travellers do, but you will have less flexibility in terms of your itinerary. Most drivers on the beach also do not speak English, so it can be difficult to communicate with them if you have a specific plan in mind . However, if you are happy to see the usual highlights of Nusa Penida, then this is a perfectly fine option.
  • Renting a scooter at Nusa Penida. If you have a scooter licence, you can also rent a scooter at the Banjar Nyuh Harbour or at the accommodation you are staying. A one day hire starts at around IDR 70K. However, scooter rental should be reserved for highly experienced drivers, as the roads around Nusa Penida are narrow and challenging.

3. Points of Interest in Nusa Penida

If you're only going for a day trip, you'll need to choose between the West or the East side of the island. The island is large and a day is not enough to experience both sides of the island!

If you'd like epic viewpoints and snorkelling , head to West Penida . This is where the IG photo spots are, and where 90% of visitors go to.

If you like local culture, and off-the-beaten-path exploration, head to East Penida . Even better, stay overnight in Nusa Penida so you cover both sides of the island, and see Nusa Penida's beauty without the crowds.

West Penida

Kelingking beach (t-rex).

The famous IG picture at Kelingking Beach - looks like a T-Rex from above!

Located on the southeastern coast of the island, Kelingking Beach is known for its crystal clear waters and stunning cliffside which looks like the head of a T-Rex. It's the most famous beach on West Nusa Penida, and the most touristed by far. Sometimes you'll need to queue to get your picture at the viewpoint!

The main thing to do here is just take in the views. While you can also hike to the bottom of the cliff to get to the beach, few people do this on a day trip as there isn't enough time. It usually takes at least 1-2 hours to hike each way.

Insider Tip: The best way to experience Kelingking Beach without the crowds is to go in the late afternoon, when the daytrippers have left for the day. To do this, you'll need to stay overnight on the island, which we'd highly recommend.

Broken Beach

Beautiful Broken Beach

Broken Beach is a gorgeous viewpoint of an epic rock archway opening up to the sea. The name is a bit misleading, because you can't actually swim at Broken Beach, but the views here make it definitely worthwhile.

Our favourite part of this viewpoint is that as you look into the waters from the cliff, you might be able to spot manta rays just beneath the water's surface. It's very cool!

Angel Billabong

Angel Billabong has a lovely infinity pool, but we don't recommend swimming here

Just next to Broken Beach, on the southwestern coast of Nusa Penida, is Angelā€™s Billabong, a natural infinity pool surrounded by towering cliffs and crystal clear waters. We didn't find Angel Billabong super impressive (especially if you go during low tide when the pool is empty!), but the views are nice enough.

Insider Tip: The waters can be unpredictable with tide rushing in very quickly, so we don't recommend swimming here! Many travellers have warned of the danger here.

Top Snorkelling Spots

At Nusa Penida, you can do a full-day snorkelling trip , or a island tour that includes both sightseeing and snorkelling . Usually the guides will take you via speedboat to the snorkelling spots to see Manta Rays, turtles and gorgeous coral.

Manta Point

Gorgeous manta rays swim in the waters here

Snorkeling with manta rays at Manta Point in Nusa Penida is an unforgettable experience. These gentle giants are truly majestic creatures, and it is an incredible feeling to be able to see them up close. The best time to visit is during manta ray season, which typically runs from May to October. However, manta rays can be seen at Manta Point year-round.

Insider Tip: To snorkel at Manta Point, you will need to be a strong swimmer. The water can be quite choppy, and you will need to be able to swim against the current in order to stay in the area where the manta rays are feeding.

See serene turtles at Gamat Bay

This spot is quite difficult to reach by land, which has been helpful to preserve the ocean life nearby. This clear water spot is known for vibrant coral reefs and colourful schools of fish. Turtles are also known to hang out here!

Crystal Bay

Snorkel at Crystal Bay

This cozy little bay, blessed with super clear waters is great for beach goers and snorkellers alike. You will see quite a few boats docking here with snorkellers looking to find vibrants corals, colorful fish and even some turtles.

See gorgeous red corals

Perhaps most impressive site here is that of the gorgeous blood-red finger corals, which thrive at Wall Beach. When snorkelling here, you may even get a glimpse giant Moray eels, octopi, sweet-lip emperor fish, the red-toothed triggerfish, batfish, and more. The current is a bit strong, but you will see more fish here.

East Penida

Teletubbies hills.

Teletubbies Hill is an iconic hill in East Penida that local festivals are held at

This super cute and unique landscape features rolling blob-shaped green hills that resemble the set of the popular children's TV show "Teletubbies." The best time to see the hills is during rainy season (December-March) when the hills turn bright green.

Insider Tip: This is also the best sunset spot in Nusa Penida and hardly anyone goes there! To see sunset here though, you'll need to spend the night at Nusa Penida as boats back to Bali would have left for the day by then.

Seaweed Farms

Visit a local seaweed farm

Most people don't know this but seaweed farms dot the northeastern coast of Nusa Penida, invisible at high tide. Introduced to the island in the 1980s, seaweed farming experienced a revival during the COVID-19 pandemic, when tourism declined and locals needed a new way to make a living.

We loved going down to the ocean during low tide and seeing the acres of seaweed being grown there. There's something really special about seeing this local side of Nusa Penida that few travellers get to see. By visiting a seaweed farm, you can support local farmers and help them maintain a more local way of life apart from tourism.

Diamond Beach

The IG popular view from the Nusa Penida treehouse at Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach in East Nusa Penida is named after the diamond-shaped rock cliffs that jut out of the blue waters. The beach is accessible via a long staircase, and the walk down is worth it for the stunning views.

However, Diamond Beach has become increasingly crowded in recent years, especially with daytrippers. A treehouse has even been built on the beach for people to take pictures. The queues can be long and to be honest it just feels like a tourist trap (see video for the crowds at the Nusa Penida treehouse).

Insider Tip: If you want to avoid the crowds, try to visit the side of the beach without the treehouse. The views are just as good, and you'll have more space to relax and enjoy the beach!

Atuh Beach at low tide

Atuh Beach at East Penida is known for the epic view of a rock island formation which ends in an arch and sticks out of the gorgeous turquoise waters.

If you come here during low tide, the view of the arch is supplanted by an ocean bed full of otherworldly rocks.

Goa Giri Putri Temple

Goa Giri Putri Temple, a huge cave temple in Nusa Penida

Goa Giri Putri Temple is a really cool cave temple in East Penida. In a land of many sacred temples, this is one of the most sacred to the Balinese, with many coming from the main island to take part in purification.

Our favourite part about this temple is its entrance! The entrance to the cave is tiny, and visitors must duck crawl through it to enter. This is said to be a test of their intention and devotion.

The locals believe that if you have the right intention, no matter how big you are, you will be able to get through the tiny crevice!

Once inside, the cave opens up into a whole other world, with walls covered in carvings and paintings. It really did feel quite spiritual and otherworldly to us.

4. How to Avoid the Crowds

Even though only a small fraction of the visitors to Bali go to Nusa Penida, most travellers come here on a day trip. This means that everyone goes to the exact same places, at the exact same time.

This has led to overcrowding at popular spots and some dangerous practices - such as swimmers being carried away by the tide.

It's only going to get more crowded as plans are in place to build a glass elevator at the most popular highlight - Kelingking Beach.

There are a few ways to enjoy Nusa Penida without the crowds, and see it in a way you'll actually enjoy. Here are our top tips.

Travel slow & stay overnight

Stay overnight at one of the lovely guesthouses here. You'll be able to see Nusa Penida at its best, without the crowds

95% of visitors just go to Nusa Penida for a day trip so they end up at all theĀ same spotsĀ at theĀ exact same time.

If you stay overnight you can really enjoy the magic of the island, the hospitality of the locals and see the beautiful spots when the crowds have left. We love staying at the guesthouses here - they're a lot more chilled than in Bali, and the locals here are genuinely happy to have you.

Take a Local Guide

nusa penida without tour

A local guide will be able to show you how to avoid crowded spots, and add colour to what you're seeing. This way you'll get to better understand the local lives and culture of people who live on Nusa Penida.

By taking a guide, youā€™ll also be contributing towards the local community with your visit.

Go to East Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is home to several gorgeous local villages

We've seen both sides of the island and we much prefer the east! With the exception of the treehouse at Diamond Beach, East Nusa Penida has a ton of heart and the sense of community here is incredibly strong.

In addition to Teletubbies Hill, Goa Giri Putri Temple and the seaweed farms, we'd also highly recommend seeing Tanglad village if you have the time! It's one of the prettiest villages we've ever seen, and it just has a lovely energy about it where everyone is incredibly welcoming.

Nusa Pendia

Over the years as pictures of the curved spine of Kelingking Beach have gone viral online, Nusa Penida has become a main attraction to visiting Indonesia. A part of a a trio of smallers islands, Nusa Pendia sits at the southeast coast of the main island of Bali. Ā Here you will find less Western restaurants, a much quieter atmosphere, some untouched wilderness, and the iconic, epic coastlines!Ā

Ways to Experience Nusa Penida

A trip to Nusa Penida can be experienced in different ways. For most people, visiting Nusa Penida means a taking a guided day trip tour from Bali. However, it’s becoming increasingly popular to go to Nusa Penida on your own, stay a few days and explore at your leisure time. There are pros and cons to both options and the way in which you decide to visit Nusa Penida greatly depends on any time limitations and how you like to travel.

Visiting On Your Own

Flexible planning, you’re on your own time

More planning involved on your part

Need to arrange getting to Nusa Penida

Must rent a motorbike or hire a driverĀ

Ability to stay several days and explore the island in its entirety and experience a quiet paradiseĀ

Opportunity to explore many beautiful places, Nusa Penida is known for Kelingking Beach but there’s so much more

Visiting on a Tour

Structured day, possibly with a group depending on the tour

Usually package deal, everything planned for youĀ

Transportation to the island usually included

Transportation on the island included

Tours are typically day tours from Bali without the option of staying on Nusa Penida

Tours usually only take you to the popular spots. And even if given the ability to choose where to go, your options are limited in just one day because of how far locations are from one another

In terms of price comparison, it depends. Exploring for one day on your own, could very well be much cheaper than a day tour package (depending on the tour). However, if you stay a few days, obviously the costs go up but you’re getting more experiences than a day tour.

As I mentioned, there are pros and cons to both, so choose whichever suits you best! Either way there’s no doubt you will enjoy this majestic island.Ā

Booking a Day Trip Tour to Nusa Penida

A day trip can be taken on your own to the island, however with a shorter amount of time an organized tour may be more worth it.Ā

Many days tours are offered by street vendors and hotels in Bali. However, you can also book ahead of time online. Below are some great options on GetYourGuide

Getting to and from Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is small island close to the mainland of Bali; to get there it is about a 30 minute boat ride from Sanur Harbor (on Bali). However, it can also be accessed from Nusa Lembongan or from Lombok. The most popular way is from Bali though.

Booking a Boat Ticket to Nusa Penida from Bali

*If you are taking a tour to Nusa Penida, boat transportation is usually included, but double check.Ā

Securing a boat ticket to Nusa Penida can be done in many ways. Some hotels will help you arrange it, which may include pick up from the hotel and the boat to Nusa Penida.

You can also book online at 12Go Ā or Klook , both of which are very reliable for all modes of transportation. Keep in mind, if you do book online, this should be done at least a day in advance. The longer you wait, the price usually goes up.

The other option is the old school way, booking from a vendor. There are many vendors on the streets within Bali who will provide transportation and tours to Nusa Penida. Or you can wing it, and show up to Sanur Harbor and buy your ticket from there. Boats and ferries leave everyday, I would just recommend showing up early.Ā

Whichever way you buy your ticket though, I recommend comparing prices across the board and weighing your options. Some ways of booking may be more expensive than others, however, some may include transportation to Sanur Harbor.

What I did:

I booked a ticket for a speedboat online at Klook , the day before, which was 165,000 IDR (~$12 USD). I actually ended up missing my boat due to oversleeping and not reading the fine print about arriving early, but they just stuck me on the next boat leaving at no extra cost, so no problem. Don’t panic if this happens to you!

Getting to Nusa Penida

In summary..

Ways to Book a Boat Ticket to Nusa Penida:

  • At your hotel
  • From a street vendor
  • Online at 12Go or KlookĀ

Tips When Booking:

  • Compare prices
  • Haggle/bargain if you can
  • Consider the pros and cons and price differences of booking a ticket that includes transportation to the harbor vs. getting there on your own
  • Book as early as possible to get a better price
  • Check your ticket for the time you’re supposed to arrive at the harbor

Getting to Sanur Harbor

Most speedboats and ferries to Nusa Penida will leave from Sanur Harbor. When purchasing your ticket, I would double check that this is your departure point. After doing so, I would check Google Maps to see how far away you are from Sanur Harbor, because given its location and Bali traffic, it might take you up to 45 minutes drive to get there. This detail is important to planning your arrival time so you don’t miss your boat (like me lol!).

If you’re taking a tour, most likely it will provide hotel pickup to the harbor, therefore you will not need to worry about the logistics of getting there. Make sure this is the case though.

If you are not on a tour, the cheapest way to reach Sanur Harbor is using the GoJek or Grab Ā  app. You can also take a taxi, this is a good option to support locals.Ā

When you arrive at Sanur Harbor, there’s a small fee for drivers to enter the parking lot, to avoid this fee just have them drop you off outside of it and walk in. Be sure to arrive early at the harbor before your boat leaves. And don’t worry if you missed breakfast, there’s a lot of places to buy food and drink at the harbor!

nusa penida without tour

Arriving at Nusa Penida

After about 30 minutes on a speedboat, you will arrive at Nusa Penida. If you’re on a tour, a vehicle will be waiting for you.Ā

Otherwise, unless you have prior arrangements, at the harbor you can bargain with someone to rent a motorbike or catch a ride to your hotel or next destination. Don’t worry about no one being there, if anything its overwhelming how many people bombard you with offers. I wasn’t ready for this, so keep a cool head, b e prepared to be rushed and given higher prices,Ā  and use your haggling skills!Ā

If you decide pay a driver, depending on where your hotel or hostel is on Nusa Penida, it’s about 100,000 IDR (~$7 USD) to get there with one of the drivers from the port.Ā  (2019 price)

From Nusa Penida Back to Bali

If you booked a tour, your transportation back will obviously be covered. However, if not you simply go about it the same way you did to get there. Hotels on Nusa Penida will have information about returning back to Bali, or you can book online on 12Go .

Sanur Harbor to Nusa Penida

Transportation on the island

How to get around Nusa Penida is a detail I did not consider before coming and a lot of people don’t. Unlike Bali there are no rideshares, public transportation, or taxis. It’s either you rent a motorbike or car yourself, or you have a private driver.

Renting a motorbike

Renting a motorbike on Nusa Penida is a popular option, especially for backpackers on a budget staying a few days. But although it’s a cheap option, there is one thing to consider: the roads on Nusa Penida are notorious for being really, really bad. There are tons of potholes and many portions of the road are just torn up gravel, most of which are up and down steep hills and curvy roads.Ā

I know many people think they’re invincible, but seriously driving a motorbike in Nusa Penida is only for experienced drivers. If you do opt to rent a motorbike, be extremely cautious, wear a helmet, and have travel insurance – Ā I saw a lotĀ  of accidents.

To rent a motorbike, you can do so from your accommodation, from a vendor, from the harbor when you arrive OR online here . Motorbikes should be around 75,000 IDR ($5 USD) per day.

nusa penida without tour

Renting a motorbike with a driver

When I visited Nusa Penida, I had never driven a motorbike in my life. When I heard about the roads, I knew it would be really stupid to try on my own. Now after seeing those roads, I know I could have gotten really hurt, even if I did know how to drive.

But being on a budget, I didn’t want to break the bank getting a private car to go around the island by myself, so I actually paid someone working at my hostel to drive me around on their motorbike. It was a lot of fun and I got to witness beautiful views without the stress of driving myself.Ā

I paid 300,000 IDR (~$20 USD) per day. To do this, just ask your hotel or hostel if they offer the service, if not they most likely will know someone to call.

Renting a private car with a driver

If you’re not traveling alone, renting a private car with a driver is a really good option because it’s safer than a motorbike and you can split the price with your fellow travelers. When you arrive at the port of Nusa Penida, you can hire a driver there, just by asking one of the men. You can also book from your hotel/hostel, or online at Klook or GetYourGuide . Renting a private car with driver is around 500,000 IDR (~$35 USD) per day (2019 price) .

Places to See on Nusa Penida

On the west coast of nusa penida:, 1. kelingking beach.

Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida

Photos of this unique, curved coastline is what has started to draw more and more people to Nusa Penida; it’s probably the most visited part of the island! And even if you’ve already seen a thousand photos online, it’s unreal to personally stand in front of the T-Rex shaped cliff, and watch the blue waves roll into the rock face.

Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) and entrance fee 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) (Unless you’re driving yourself on a motorbike, you usually won’t have to pay this).

Arrive early morning if you want to miss the crowd.

2. Angel's Billabong

Angels Billabong Bali Nusa Penida

Most people describe Angel’s billabong as a natural infinity pool because when it’s low tide, it sits above the ocean water and you’re able to swim there. If you’re like me and didn’t know this, you might end up there at high tide! You won’t be able to swim, but you will see how clear the water is and you’ll witness some massive waves coming in and hitting the rock face!

Cost | Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) – you only pay once for Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Manta Bay Viewpoint

Tip | if you want to swim here, you need to come at low tide. ask the locals when this is, 3. broken beach.

nusa penida without tour

Walking distance from Angel’s Billabong is Broken Beach. This cove is surrounded by cliffs that eventually form a natural bridge. Although you are not able to go down to the beach, the overlook is still a sweet spot. Watching the waves roll in through the opening in the wall was mesmerizing.

Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) – you only pay once for Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Manta Bay Viewpoint Ā

To really get the full experience, make sure and walk around the cove and over the natural bridge!

4. Manta Bay Viewpoint

Manta Bay Viewpoint Nusa Penida Bali

Manta Bay is just on the other side of Broken Beach. Sometimes, you are able to look down and see the magnificent manta ray swimming below. When I visited, I wasn’t able to see any because there were so many waves, but because it’s so close to Broken Beach, its worth it to check and see!

Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) – you only pay once for Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Manta Bay Viewpoint

Go at low tide to have a better chance of spotting a manta ray!

On my way to the East Coast of Nusa Penida, I stopped at Pura Goa Putri Cave which is a Hindu Temple inside a cave! In order to enter, you have to crawl through a small opening. Once inside the ceiling opens up and you follow a pathway leading to multiple prayers sights and then come out the back of the cave. It’s really so interesting!

20,000 IDR (~$1.50 USD)

Bring a sarong if you can, as you have to cover your knees to enter a Hindu temple. However, if you don’t have one, they do offer some at the temple for you to borrow.

6. Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach Nusa Penida Bali

Diamond beach, like Kelingking beach, has started to really blow up on social media. And for good reason! This beach is paradise, but (when I visited) without the crowds.

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) for parking and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) entrance – this covers Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach

When going down to the beach, be careful on the stairs as they become more narrow.

7. Atuh Beach

nusa penida without tour

Atuh Beach is the most “commercial” of the beaches meaning it has plenty of lounge chairs and local food vendors or warungs. I ate a delicious lunch here with an incredible view of crystal clear water. Also, if you buy food or drink, they offer you a chair for free to lounge in later!Ā

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) for parking and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) entrance – this covers Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach Ā

Many people who look up photos of Atuh Beach see photos of Sebele beach, which has been mistakenly called Atuh Beach. Sebele beach is actually on the other side; I did not know this when I visited; I definitely need to go back to see that beach too!

8. Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) Viewpoint

Thousand Island Viewpoint Nusa Penida Bali

This viewpoint was probably my favorite! There was no one there except for a few people passing through, so I got to sit and enjoy the view for awhile without any disturbance. And that’s really what you need to take in this view, because it’s absolutely magnificent!

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) to park and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) for entrance – this covers Thousand Island Viewpoint and Rumah Pohon Treehouse Ā

This place is interchangeably called Thousand Island Viewpoint or Pulau Seribu; it’s the same place!

9. Rumah Pohon Treehouse

nusa penida without tour

The Rumah Pohon Treehouse is another instagram phenomena. Just next to the Thousand Island Viewpoint, the treehouse offers another perspective of the cliff and is a picture perfect scene. Ā

*I was definitely under the impression the treehouse was just a cute place for pictures, etc. however you can actually book to stay there! Keep in mind, it is very simple accommodation, just a mattress from what I’ve heard, so you’re really just paying for the view.Ā

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) to park and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) for entrance – this covers Thousand Island Viewpoint and Rumah Pohon Treehouse

Keep going past the treehouse, up the hill for another lookout!

Other Places to See on Nusa Penida

These places are a little more off the beaten path, and I never got to chance to visit myself. Next time!

Snorkeling and Diving at Nusa Penida

Manta point.

Although there are several spots for snorkeling and diving off the coast of Nusa Penida, the most famous is Manta Point. Manta Point is where tons of manta rays come to feed (naturally, not fed by humans). So although it is not guaranteed you will see any, there is still a big chance you will see many gigantic, manta rays!

nusa penida without tour

When I went snorkeling here, I was actually sea sick from the boat. But I wanted to see these beautiful creatures so badly I jumped in the water anyways. And I’m so happy I did. My mind was absolutely blown! Manta rays surrounded me. They glided through the water so gracefully, the movement of their body portraying them as if they were flying. And they’re not shy at all either; many times they would swim right at me, and I had to dodge their gigantic body. Manta rays are not dangerous at all, however, to touch them you risk damaging their skin.

Snorkeling with Manta Rays Nusa Penida

Despite the sea sickness, this was one of the most magical moments of my life and I highly recommend anyone traveling to Nusa Penida do it. If you’re taking a day trip, it’s possible to book a tour that includes this. However, if not you can book with a dive company on the island.

Snorkeling with Manta Rays Nusa Penida Bali

I booked my snorkeling tour through Mambo Dive Resort and thoroughly enjoyed snorkeling with them. They were a lot of fun, very respectful of nature, informative, and it was reasonably price at 350,000 IDR (~$25 USD). We went to two snorkeling places, Manta Point and a spot to see coral (either Gamat or Crystal Bay). There are some snorkeling companies that will offer 4 or so snorkeling points, but I personally recommend only doing two (one being Manta Point) so you can spend more time at Manta Point.

Other snorkeling spots at Nusa Penida besides Manta Point:

Crystal bay, toyapakeh wall point, buddha temple, where to stay on nusa penida.

If you’ve decided there’s so much to see on Nusa Penida and you would like to take your time and explore, there are plenty of accommodation options on this small island, from budget to luxury.

If you’re a solo traveler and looking to save some money, hostels are the way to go. When it comes to hostels, Nusa Penida has quite a few for such a small island. And they’re definitely budget friendly! Hostels range from $5-15 USD, and some even have a pool .

When I visited Nusa Penida I stayed at Packer Box Hostel , which was simple, but clean and comfortable and I met some amazing people there!

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Packer Box (@thepackerbox) on Aug 11, 2019 at 9:34pm PDT

If you’re traveling as a group of 2, private rooms can also be a really cheap option to split. Many of the hostels on Nusa Penida offer private rooms that are just as much as a dorm option at another hostel. On Hostelworld private rooms range from $15 – 40 USD.

Nusa Penida has a number of resort hotels featuring spas, pools, a tropical breakfast, and all for affordable prices. Some highly rated ones are Blue Harbor Beachfront Villas & Resto , Ocean Terrace Suite and Spa , Semabu Hills Hotel , and Akusara Jungle Resort . Most are around $50 USD but reaching no more than $150 USD.

Tip When Booking Accommodation on Nusa Penida:

While you get excited about beautiful places and are mind blown by how cheap they are, don’t forget to check the location. Nusa Penida is a small island, but it takes a very long time to get places. So weigh the pros and cons of accommodation options and proximity to where you want to visit.Ā

Best Time to Visit Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida can be explored at any point in the year! However, it’s best May to September when it’s almost guaranteed dry weather.

More Resources for Your Trip to Indonesia

Planning your own trip? Here’s some resources I used to book and coordinate my itinerary through Thailand along with some recommendations:

If you’re a budget traveler or looking for an easy way to meet others,Ā  Hostelworld is the best place to search. Below are some of my recommendations, click to search for availability !Ā

  • Canguu: The Farm Hostel
  • Ubud: Puri Garden Hotel & Hostel OR The Wayan House OR Ubud Rice Field House
  • Nusa Penida: Packer Box Hostel OR Nuansa Penida Hostel
  • Seminyak: My Capsule Bali
  • Kuta (Lombok): Pipes Hostel
  • Gili Air: H20 Yoga & Meditartion Center OR Tipsea Turtle
  • Gili Trawangan: Atlas Gili

Booking.com is the way to go when search for hotels in Indonesia because they typically offer free cancellation with plenty of affordable to more luxurious stays – also for cheap!

Flights to Indonesia are typically cheapest to Jakarta but shouldn’t be too much more directly to Bali/Denpasar. I flew to Singapore and then flew to Bali which is also a good option. Domestic flights within Indonesia can be more or lessĀ  affordable especially if traveling light. There are ferry options, but the waters between island can be pretty wild so if you can, I recommend flying. To find the best deal & prices I recommend using Skyscanner .Ā

BUSES/Ferries/& more

The easiest ways to search for ways to get around Indonesia are withĀ  12GoAsia Ā and Klook . Both platforms show various options (ferries, buses, flights, etc.) so you can compare option and prices in English.Ā Ā  Check 12GoAsia out here and check out Klook here

Travel insurance is a must for every trip to ensure you’re covered in unexpected situations. My go to travel insurance is always WorldNomads which is made for backpackers. You can search for coverage here .Ā

If you’re a digital nomad looking for travel medical emergency insurance, I also suggest Safety Wing .Ā

Tours & Experiences

There’s a lot of free thing to do in Indonesia and/or experiences you can do on your own. I always recommend checking blog posts for inspiration. If you’re interested in tours and experiences though like snorkeling, cooking classes & more then I most recommendĀ  Klook Ā and GetYourGuide for Indonesia.Ā Ā

3-Day Trip to Nusa Penida, Indonesia: A Perfect Tour Itinerary

  • Facebook 18

3 Days in Nusa Penida - Itinerary (Bali, Indonesia)

Nusa Penida is a gorgeous, mostly undeveloped island just 30 minutes off the eastern coast of Bali in Indonesia . And unlike Bali, you won’t find hundreds of yoga studios or organic cafes there. Just miles of spectacular cliffs towering over the ocean, exhilarating hiking adventures, white sand beaches, and the friendliest locals.

And while it is possible to do a day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali, that is certainly not the best way to explore this amazing island. We would recommend that you leave your heavy luggage at your hotel in Bali, pack a small bag, and spend at least three days touring the island by motorbike. You’ll stay in different hotels each night and love the freedom that you get from the open road!

Don’t forget to check out our web story: 3-Day Trip to Nusa Penida, Indonesia

Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. If you make a purchase or booking through one of our links we may earn a small commission (don’t worry, it’s at no extra cost to you).

Know Before You Go

  • The currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) and at the time of writing, the exchange rate was 14,294 IDR to $1 USD. So if we say something costs 10,000 IDR, that’s less than a dollar.
  • Be sure to get money out of the ATM before leaving Bali. Only a few of the ATMs in Nusa Penida accept foreign cards and they often run out of money or simply don’t work.
  • The roads are terrible! If you’ve never driven a motorbike before, this probably isn’t the best place to learn.
  • Driving everywhere on Nusa Penida takes longer than expected. A 3-4 mile trip can easily take 30 minutes to an hour depending on the weather and road conditions. Leave yourself plenty of extra time so you don’t get caught driving long distances on your motorbike after dark.
  • Both men and women must wear sarongs to enter temples on Nusa Penida Island. While some have sarongs that you can borrow, others do not. It’s worth bringing something that you can tie around your waist, just in case.
  • Check out our complete list of things to know before you visit Nusa Penida !

What to Pack for Nusa Penida

Since you’ll be touring the island on a motorbike, you’ll just want to bring a small backpack that is comfortable to wear all day.

  • Swimsuit and coverup
  • Tennis shoes
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Socks and underwear
  • Compact camera and/or GoPro Camera

nusa penida without tour

If rain is in the forecast during your visit, we’d recommend bringing one extra change of clothes and keeping it in a ziplock bag. We were drenched at the end of every day from the rain or the ocean, and since nothing ever dries in the humid climate all of our clothes were soggy for the entire trip.

Getting to Nusa Penida Island

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Fast Ferry

Ferries depart from the Sanur Pier on the eastern coast of Bali. This is about 30-45 minutes from Kuta, 1 hour from Seminyak, and 1-1.5 hours from Canggu , and 2 hours from either Ubud or Uluwatu. It’s not far but traffic on Bali can be terrible so leave yourself plenty of time to get to Sanur before your boat’s scheduled departure.

The ferry trip from Sanur Bali to Nusa Penida takes just 45 minutes and will cost anywhere from 150,000 to 200,000 IDR per person depending on who sells you the ticket and how hard you bargain. Ferries depart frequently throughout the day so if you’re traveling during the low season, it’s easy to show up at the pier and just buy a ticket for the next departure.

During high season you should book your ferry well in advance as they occasionally sell out for weeks at a time. We recommend doing it online at Bookaway.com . There you can see all of the fast ferry routes and schedules as well as compare prices.

Check Fast Ferry Schedule & Ticket Prices

Motorbike Basics

As soon as you arrive at the pier on Nusa Penida, you’ll be approached by men offering to rent you a bike right there. And if you head to the main street just one block over, there are several small shops renting motorbikes as well. Expect to pay around 70,000 IDR per day.

It doesn’t really matter where you rent your bike from as long as it is in good condition. You’re going to be riding on some rough roads in remote parts of the island so you definitely don’t want to have your motorbike break down on Nusa Penida!

Be sure to check the following prior to committing to a bike:

  • Make sure both brakes work well as there are a lot of hills on the island.
  • Check the shocks – you’re going to have a bumpy ride!
  • Take photos of any existing damage, just in case.
  • Fill up on gas before you set out.
  • There are small shops all over the island that sell petrol but you won’t use it much as you’ll be covering very small distances.

We had great luck with our bike from Double-G Guesthouse , they clearly keep their rentals in good condition.

Complete 3-Day Itinerary for Nusa Penida Island in Indonesia

Day 1: angel’s billabong, broken beach, and crystal bay.

You’re going to have a lot of activities over the next three days so we would recommend catching an early ferry from Bali to Nusa Penida Island. As mentioned previously, you can rent a motorbike from one of the entrepreneurs hanging out at the pier or head one street over and shop around for a good bargain on a motorbike rental.

Once you have your bike and a full tank of gas, it’s time to begin your tour of Nusa Penida! Head south towards Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach . Be careful while driving on this road because it gets a lot of vehicle traffic from the day tours of the island and the cars don’t leave a lot of room for motorbikes to get by. You may want to pull off to the side if you see a line of them heading your way.

The road to Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach is the worst on the entire island so plan for a bumpy ride. Not only is the road badly damaged, but because of the long distance, you must drive on the rutted, rocky road.

Angel’s Billabong

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Angel's Billabong

When you arrive at Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach, you’ll need to pay the entrance fee of 5,000 IDR per person and 1,000 IDR for motorbike parking. There are several small restaurants here if you want to have a snack or rest with an ice-cold beverage before continuing on your tour. Be aware that this is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island so expect to encounter crowds.

Angel’s Billabong is a small swimming hole with gorgeous, turquoise water that overlooks the ocean. It is surrounded by high rocks so you can enjoy the view from above. It’s one of the most beautiful spots on Nusa Penida.

Swimming here is only allowed right at low tide and is roped off when it is deemed unsafe by the “lifeguard” on duty. There have been incidents of unsuspecting tourists getting swept out to sea by a particularly large sneaker wave here so safety is a priority. Be sure to check the tide report prior to visiting as swimming here is absolutely amazing!

Broken Beach

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Broken Beach

Broken Beach is essentially a beach that is completely surrounded by cliff walls; a natural sea arch allows water to flow through. You can walk the loop trail high above the enclosed beach area and see the spectacular views from all angles. There are even several platforms that you can stand on to best capture a photo.

Your final stop for the day is Crystal Bay . It’s only a little over 11 miles from Angel’s Billabong, but it will take you about an hour to drive back over that terrible, bumpy road you just came down!

Crystal Bay

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Crystal Bay

The water in Crystal Bay is calm and it’s perfect for snorkeling. You can rent snorkel gear on the beach for 50,000 IDR to see the coral. Or you can just relax on the beach with an ice-cold Bintang in hand. There are numerous small warungs lining the beach that serve food and drinks.

If you have an extra day on Nusa Penida, you can also sign onto one of the daily diving/snorkeling trips to Manta Point where you can swim with giant manta rays (more about that below).

Be sure to watch the sunset on the beach at Crystal Bay, the sun sets behind the huge rock in the middle of the bay and it’s absolutely magical. You’ll be happy if you’re staying nearby so you don’t have to worry about driving after dark!

Where to Stay: Puri Penida Cottage is just a short, 5-minute walk from the bay. Each darling little bungalow has a large, comfortable bed and air conditioning to keep you cool in the heat.

Day 2: Kelingking Beach and Tembeling Beach

From Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach, you’ll have a 30-minute ride to Kelingking Beach . This is the most famous location on Nusa Penida due to the fact that the peninsula jutting out into the ocean resembles a T-Rex when viewed from the right angle. This is also a very touristy spot, but most visitors simply snap a few photos from the lookout at the top and don’t actually hike down to the beautiful beach below.

Kelingking Beach

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Kelingking Beach

Again, you’ll pay 5,000 IDR per person to enter the area and 1,000 IDR to park your motorbike. You’ll walk past a few small restaurants to the beginning of the stairway where views of the T-Rex will start to come into view. This is where the crowds gather. Keep walking down to where the actual trail begins and you’ll start to see fewer and fewer people.

The trail to Kelingking Beach follows the ridgeline of the peak and then takes an abrupt right turn for an even steeper descent down the mountain. It takes about 45 minutes to descend, and an hour to hike back up. You’ll most certainly want tennis shoes here as the trail is very steep and rocky. And while there are railings for most of the hike, there are times you’ll need to do some rock scrambling. And the railings get less sturdy toward the bottom of the hike.

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Kelingking Beach

But once you reach Kelingking Beach, you’ll know it was all worth it! Here you’ll find a beautiful and secluded white sand beach, where only the most dedicated visitors are lounging. There is one small stand where you can purchase drinks or snacks but be sure to bring your own water, just in case it’s closed. The waves here are intense so be careful.

Your next stop is Tembeling Beach and Forest which is just over four miles away from Kelingking Beach and should take about 40 minutes on your motorbike. If you want to stop for lunch on your way there, we recommend heading inland to Warung D’Coconut . It’s a little bit out of your way but the food is excellent!

Tembeling Beach

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Tembeling Beach

Once you reach the turnoff for Tembeling Beach, it’s about 1.85 miles down a steep paved lane just wide enough for one motorbike at a time. It’s a total forest surrounding you the whole way and there’s a steep drop-off on one side. But the vegetation is so thick you probably won’t even notice how far the drop really is.

If you’re touring Nusa Penida by car or you don’t feel comfortable navigating such a steep road on your own motorbike, you can hire a motorbike taxi driver to take you down to Tembeling Beach. There are a handful of drivers that wait at the turnoff from the main road. The going seems to be 50,000 INR for the round-trip journey plus some wait time at the bottom.

Once you arrive at the parking lot for Tembeling Beach, you’ll still need to descend a set of steep steps down to the beach. It’s just about a 10-minute walk to the beach at the bottom. There are two freshwater swimming holes here, one about halfway down, and one that overlooks the ocean. It’s so refreshing to cool off in the calm water, without getting salty or sandy from the beach.

If you do want to enjoy the beach here, it is small but incredibly beautiful. Enclosed by tall cliff walls with large rocks on either side. It feels totally secluded and you’re likely to see more locals than foreigners here. In fact, this was our favorite spot on the whole island of Nusa Penida!

There is a small swing set here and usually a lady selling drinks and snacks. You’ll want to spend at least an hour here soaking in the pools and enjoying the ocean view.

Our favorite place to stay on Nusa Penida is The Mesare Resort ; just 7 miles from Tembeling Beach. After a long day of climbing stairs, you’ll definitely want to have an ice-cold beer while swimming in their lovely pool. Plus, you’ll have the best night’s sleep in their massive and luxurious beds!

Where to Stay: The Mesare Resort is one of the best hotels on the whole island. Offering super comfortable beds, luxurious outdoor showers, and daily yoga sessions, you’ll have a hard time leaving this little piece of paradise.

If you’re on a tight budget, Agasta Villa is just another great option in the area though you’ll have to do a little backtracking. The bungalows are brand new, with comfortable beds, air conditioning, and a hot shower!

Where to Eat: Warung D’Coconut is a great stop for lunch, although a bit pricier than many of the warungs on the island. Be sure to try the calamari and the gado-gado! You can also eat dinner there if you’re staying at Holy Hill Villa.

Day 3: Peguyangan Waterfall, Diamond Beach, and Atuh Beach

You’ll want to get an early start again today especially if you’re hoping to catch a ferry back to Bali in the afternoon. Your first stop is Peguyangan Waterfall . It’s four miles from The Mesare Resort and should take you about 30 minutes to drive there.

Peguyangan Waterfall

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Peguyangan Waterfall (Blue Stairs)

You’ll need to pay 5,000 IDR to park your motorbike and 10,000 IDR per person to rent a sarong. Both men and women need to wear sarongs here as there is a sacred temple at the bottom.

You may have seen photos of Peguyangan Waterfall’s famous blue stairs that cling to the side of a cliff wall and lead down to the ocean below. This hike is intense and not for anyone who is afraid of heights. Some of the stairs are concrete, but others are blue metal slats where you can see through to the ocean far, far below your feet.

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Peguyangan Waterfall

When you reach the bottom there is a small temple. And past that you’ll see a sign for a “bathing area”. The steps down to the bathing area are slippery so be careful here. At the base of the stairs are several man-made pools that catch the spring water from the mountain. Here you can relax and enjoy the waves crashing into the rocks below you. If you’re wondering why it’s called a waterfall, you’ll notice a small one-off to the right side when you’re facing the ocean in the pools.

Your next stop is Diamond Beach . It’s about 12.5 miles from the Peguyangan Waterfall but will take about an hour by motorbike. If you have extra time to spare, stop at Teletubbies Hill for the beautiful views.

Diamond Beach

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Diamond Beach

It’s 10,000 IDR per person to enter the Diamond Beach / Atuh Beach area. Once you park you have three choices. You can take a right and go down the stairs to Diamond Beach. Another option is to go straight and head up the hill to a small temple with nice views. Or, take a left and head down the stairs to Atuh Beach.

The stairs down to Diamond Beach are very picturesque as you get the view of the beach below. There are usually people here taking photos. The descent is tricky in some areas but there are ropes to hang on to.

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Diamond Beach

There is a woman with a small stand at the bottom. You can pay 100,000 IDR to get harnessed into her awesome swing off the side of the cliff, or 50,000 IDR to sit in one of her “nests” for a photo shoot. She also has cold drinks and snacks for sale.

The waves here are aggressive, and during high tide, there’s not a lot of beach left to sit on. But it is the most beautiful beach on Nusa Penida and well worth the trip down.

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Atuh Beach

Atuh Beach has much calmer water for swimming or snorkeling and many more amenities. The beach is lined with warungs selling seafood, fruit shakes, and cold Bingtangs.

You can rent two lounge chairs with an umbrella between them for 50,000 IDR. It’s the perfect place to grab lunch and spend an afternoon on Nusa Penida.

Rumah Pohon Tree House

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Rumah Pohon Tree House

While you’re in the area, you may as well stop by the famous Instagram tree houses of Nusa Penida. The Rumah Pohon Tree Houses are small houses that have been built into the trees high on a hill with spectacular views of Diamond Beach below. They have become quite famous on social media with hundreds of photographers descending on the viewpoint daily to snap the perfect Instagram selfie.

If you can plan far enough in advance, you can actually spend a night in one of the tree houses , but they book out months in advance. Sleeping in one of the tree houses is quite expensive for how basic the accommodations are, but you’re really paying for the view.

Or you can simply pay 10,000 IDR per person to check them out and snap a few photos.

Back to Bali

From Atuh Beach, it’s just a 1-hour drive back to the pier on the west side of Nusa Penida where you’ll drop off your motorbike and catch the ferry back to Bali.

One interesting stop along the way is the Goa Giri Putri Temple. This Hindu temple is hidden in a cave and you’ll have to crawl through a small entrance to access it. Once you’re inside; however, it opens up into a large cavern filled with incense smoke and Hindu worshippers. As usual, you’ll need to be wearing a sarong to enter the temple, but there are a few shops nearby offering cheap sarong rentals.

And finally, if you have left yourself some extra time then stop at the famous Penida Colada beach bar for happy hour (2 for 1 cocktail from 4 pm – 7 pm) and beautiful sunset views of Mount Agung.

Where to Stay: If you have time consider spending a night at Kempoel Jangkang . It’s just a short, 5-minute motorbike ride from Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach. Accommodations are basic but rooms have air conditioning and the food here is some of the best on the entire island!

Where to Eat: The food at Kempoel Jangkang is fantastic. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, it’s a good stop for lunch on your way to Diamond Beach. There are also numerous warungs at Atuh Beach offering food and drinks.

If You Have More Time on Nusa Penida Island

There are a few popular attractions that we left off the list for various reasons. If you can spend more time on the island, it’s worth checking them out!

Manta Point

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Giant Manta Ray at Manta Point

One of the most popular sites on Nusa Penida is actually underwater. If you have an extra day on Nusa Penida, sign up for a boat trip to Manta Point. The boats typically leave from Crystal Bay. They will include pickup services from your hotel if you’re staying on the west side of the island.

You’ll have the opportunity to swim with giant manta rays which will undoubtedly be a highlight of your trip to Nusa Penida !

Banah Cliff Point

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Banah Cliff Point

Banah Cliff Point is located between Kelingking Beach and Tembeling Beach. We left it off our itinerary because the last mile of the road to get there is incredibly rough. We ended up parking our bike about 1/4 mile from the point and walking the rest of the way. There are nice views of the cliffs from both sides of the point. But, in our opinion, they were no better than the views from, say, Kelingking. If you do go, there is a really friendly little shop. It has a few hot dishes as well as chips and cold drinks for sale.

Saren Cliff Point

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Saren Cliff Point

Saren Cliff Point is located on the coast between Tembeling Beach and Peguyangan. And as with Banah, the last mile or so of the road here is terrible. And again, the views are nice, but it may not be worth the difficult drive if you are short on time.

Pura Puncak Mundi

Pura Puncak Mundi is the temple that is located on the highest point on the island. Men and women must wear a sarong to enter the temple, and as with all Indonesian temples, foreigners are not allowed to enter the inner sanctuary.

The drive up to the temple is really beautiful, with views of the lush vegetation for miles in all directions. However, the temple isn’t all that interesting and people there will look at you like you are crazy for visiting. Plus, there are no real views from the actual temple.

Enjoy your tour of Nusa Penida Island!

Nusa Penida Tour ā€“ Everything You Should Know Before You Go

Just 45 minutes from Bali by boat, Nusa Penida has beautiful views, stunning landscapes, and one of the most gorgeous beaches we’ve ever seen. If you’re thinking about doing a Nusa Penida tour , this post covers everything you need to know before booking.

What’s in our guide to a Nusa Penida tour?

If you know anything about Stephen and me, you’ll know that we hardly ever recommend tours. We prefer to travel independently, staying away from the tourist crowds and seeing things at our own pace.

But the spectacularly beautiful Nusa Penida Island, not far from the south shores of Bali, is a tricky place to travel independently.

For a start, there is little public transport available, and you can’t even hire an ojek (motorbike with driver) without a lot of hassle. Even taxis are hard to come by.

Lots of tourists rent motorbikes when they get to Nusa Penida. If that’s your plan, read the section below about driving on the island before you do it!

Most people see the main sights of the island on a guided tour. You can choose to:

  • Get to Nusa Penida yourself, spend a few nights on the island, and book your tour while you’re there.
  • Take a one day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali, squeezing everything into about 10 hours, depending on traffic.

We did the first option, but the tour is basically the same either way.

If you want to see the incredible sights on Nusa Penida, read on to discover…

What you Need to Know to Plan Your Nusa Penida Tour

Should you choose a West Nusa or East Nusa tour?

West nusa penida tour.

The west side of the island is the more popular one ā€” and rightly so. It takes you to visit four scenic spots, including the most perfect beach we’ve ever seen!

kelingkin beach nusa penida

This is the tour we chose. It goes to:

  • Angel’s Billabong . A natural tidal pool, swimmable at low tide.
  • Broken Beach . An inaccessible beach with an impressive stone archway.
  • Kelingking Beach . The most beautiful beach on earth?
  • Crystal Bay . A great beach for swimming and sunbathing.

East Nusa Penida Tour

If you can’t stand crowds, you might want to opt for the east side of the island, where fewer tourists go.

The East Nusa Penida Tour goes to:

  • Atuh. A simply gorgeous Nusa Penida beach.
  • Raja Lima. A viewpoint that’s perfect for Instagram.
  • Gili Putri Cave. A Balinese Hindu cave temple.
  • Teletubbies Hills. Green rolling hills named for their resemblance to the Teletubbies’ home.

Sights and Highlights of the West Nusa Penida Tour

Angel’s billabong, nusa penida.

After a juddery hour on the road, driving in a long line of almost identical four-wheel-drive SUVs, we arrived at Angel’s Billabong. The parking lot was jammed. Was this tour going to be a terrible mistake?

busy parking lot near angel's billabong nusa penida

As we walked along the cement trail to the viewpoints, we weren’t feeling much better about our choice. Every space along the cliff held a girl in a bikini top striking adorable poses while her boyfriend took pictures. Actually, that’s not quite true. Only the Western girls were inappropriately dressed!

Side note: Yes, I know I shouldn’t judge people based on their choice of clothing, but wearing next to nothing in a relatively conservative country is just not cool. Would it kill you to show some respect by throwing on a beach cover-up?

We pushed our way through the crowds for our own photos and selfies and finally climbed down to the Billabong. Though the waves were crashing into the pool and churning back out to see, one guy ventured out near the edge.

man swimming in angel's billabong with huge waves crashing

The crowd gasped as an especially large wave yanked him off his feet and threatened to drag him out to sea. He managed to regain his footing and retreated back to safety.

Angel’s Billabong is only safe for a swim during low tide and when the waves are small. If your guide says to get out of the water, get out of the water.

Broken Beach, Nusa Penida

Once we were done at Angel’s Billabong, our guide, MadĆ©, walked us a short way down the trail to Broken Beach.

The actual beach, being at the bottom of a steep cliff, is inaccessible from the top. The only activity here is to admire the stone archway leading into the beach and take more photos for Instagram!

If you walk across the archway, you’ll get the best view of the beach. When we were there, sadly, there was a dead dog washed up on shore.

You get used to this kind of contrast when you travel in countries like Indonesia. Good and bad often come hand-in-hand, all becoming part of your travel experience.

(If you’re interested in helping the stray dogs on Bali, check out the Bali Animal Welfare Association ) ā†’

Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida

At first, we thought that Kelingking Beach was just another pretty viewpoint, where we’d snap a few pictures and move onto the next thing. Then, we noticed that there were people down on the beach, hundreds of feet below where we stood.

This is where our Nusa Penida tour took a turn towards the incredible.

Kelingking Beach is best described with this picture.

Kelingking beach from above

It is a perfect stretch of golden sand in a perfectly protected bay. Looking down (way down!) at the beach from the cliffs above is a dizzying experience.

When MadĆ©, our tour guide, said “You can go down”, I didn’t believe it. How could we possibly get from here, way in the sky, to there, down at the sea?

As it turns out, there is a trail, if it can be called that.

It dips down off the plateau and onto the ridge that juts out into the sea. At the beginning, it is fairly steep and precarious, with low fences made of branches lining each side.

steep trail down to kelingking beach

The second half of the trail is steeper, in worse repair, more crowded, and even more terrifying. If you choose to go down, you’ll need nerves of steel and arms and legs to match.

steeper trail down to kelingking beach

As we slowly scrambled our way down, sweaty tourists on their way up assured us it was worth it. Starting to feel breathless and dizzy from the extreme height, I wasn’t so sure. If Stephen hadn’t been there egging me on, I would have turned around after 5 minutes.

But I’m so glad I didn’t!

Kelingking is the most beautiful beach we’ve ever sunk our toes into.

Only a small percentage of the tourists up top ever make it down to the beach. The climb makes it feel all the more special ā€” like you’re in a secret club of crazy brave people.

tourists in bikinis and swimsuits on beautiful kelingking beach

After playing in the crashing waves for a while, we sat on the beach and absorbed the views.

Though we loved the beach, I have to admit I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t be able to handle the climb back up! I resigned myself to being stranded for the rest of my life on the stunning beach. But, as the tide came in, leaving only a tiny bit of beach exposed, I realized I would have to leave with everyone else.

My worry was all for nothing. Going up was much easier than coming down! Plus, the people in front of us were so slow that I had plenty of time to rest and catch my breath.

Crystal Bay, Nusa Penida

After the sweaty, dusty climb out of Kelingking Beach, we considered skipping Crystal Bay and heading back early. But, we had visited there four years ago when we were on Nusa Penida and really wanted to see how much it had changed.

man climbing a tree root in crystal bay nusa penida

Another 40-minute drive took us to the familiar beach.

In 2014, there were only two small drink stalls and a small handful of people on the beach. Now, it is lined with little restaurants, beach chairs, and people soaking up the sun.

By the time we arrived, many of the day trippers and boat trippers had already left, so it was busy but not overcrowded.

Sinking into the crystal blue water and washing off the accumulated grit, sunscreen, and sweat from our day tour on Nusa Penida was the best feeling in the world. Crystal Bay made the perfect end to a tour that, if not perfect, was well worth the time and money.

How much does a Nusa Penida tour cost?

We were already on the island when we decided to do a tour of Nusa Penida. Before we booked, I emailed four of the main Nusa Penida tour companies for pricing and details.

Two of them never replied and the two that did offered me the same tour at significantly different prices.

This is typical in Indonesia, where pricing is often based on getting you to pay as much as possible, rather than offering the same price to everyone.

  • Penida Tours was the most expensive at 1.35 million IDR (94 USD) per person.
  • Discover Nusa Penida offered us the same tour at 1.5 million IDR (104 USD) for two people.

Instead of going with either of these companies, we asked our hotel to arrange the tour. They use a local tour company called Sampalan Trans Company. Our Nusa Penida tour cost us 700K IDR (50 USD) for a car and driver for a full day. We arranged the tour at around 8pm the night before we wanted to go.

What is included on a tour?

Our tour included:

  • Car and driver for a full day
  • Transportation to Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, Kelingking Beach, Crystal Bay
  • All entry fees and parking fees were included

The more expensive tours also include:

  • Lunch at a restaurant (value 110K IDR / 8 USD for two people)
  • English-speaking guide (our guide only spoke a little English)

Should you do a Nusa Penida day tour from Bali?

If you’re going to do a day trip to Nusa Penida, you’ll have to book everything in Bali or before you leave home. This greatly simplifies the trip, but will also cost you more.

A Nusa Penida day trip from Bali is busy, but you’ll just be able to squeeze in all the Nusa Penida must sees!

crowds looking over angel's billagong

Most of the Nusa Penida tour companies offer the exact same things, with varying prices.

The only major difference can be in the quality of fast boat you get to take. It’s important to travel with a reliable company, since the fast boats can often be late or have mechanical problems ā€” and the safety levels can also vary!

Expect to pay around 100 USD per person for the full day with everything included.

If you like to book ahead, this day tour from Bali includes everything I cover in this post and has excellent reviews.

This tour costs a little less but it doesn’t have any reviews yet!

You can also do a 2-day tour from Bali that includes Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. This tour includes and overnight stay on Lembongan, plus snorkelling on both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. More Nusa Penida Tours ā†’

What should you bring on a Nusa Penida tour?

  • Bathing suit & towel ā€“ you can swim at Kelingking and Crystal Bay
  • Beach cover up ā€“ to be respectful of the Indonesian culture
  • Suncreen ā€“ most of the day you’ll be in direct sunlight
  • Lots of water ā€“ it’s easy to get dehydrated on this dry island
  • Shoes other than flip-flops ā€“ the Kelingking climb is much easier in proper shoes
  • Camera ā€“ to capture the best views in the world
  • A small backpack ā€“ don’t bring a big beach bag or purse, as you’ll need your hands free for Kelingking

Things You Should Know Before You go to Nusa Penida

1. the roads are insanely lousy..

Except for a few nicely paved stretches, the roads on Nusa Penida are indescribably bad. Roads that were originally meant for a few local villagers on motorbikes are now packed with scores of SUVs every day.

In most places, the asphalt has worn away to infrequent chunks, which are connected by rocky, sandy, potholes. Even the good parts of road are narrow, winding, and crowded, making the driving hair-raising either way. It makes for a very bumpy ride.

line of tour vans on nusa penida

2. Avoid renting a motorbike on Nusa Penida.

When you first get to Nusa Penida, you might be fooled by the perfectly paved beach road into thinking that driving a motorbike there will be easy. But inland, the roads transform into pot-holed messes, with sandy rocks, huge potholes, steep hills, and little or no asphalt. Unless you’re an excellent motorbike driver, I wouldn’t even try it.

It might be all part of the adventure ā€”Ā or it could be a great way to earn a trip to the hospital.

If you want to know more about staying safe on a motorbike, read our complete guide to renting a scooter in Bali .

3. Everything is farther than it looks on the map.

Even though the sights look close together, don’t let that fool you. It takes about an hour to get between each stop. You’ll spend a good part of the day in the car, shaking and rattling your way from one destination to the next. If you’re prone to car sickness, take your nausea meds!

traffic jam on nusa penida

4. Nusa Penida is not the deserted paradise it once was.

If you’ve heard how secluded and tranquil Nusa Penida is, you’ll be in for a shock! The four destinations on the West Nusa Penida Tour are as crowded as the Mona Lisa on a holiday weekend. There are bikini-clad tourists everywhere, all jostling for that perfect Instagram shot.

At least that is what it was like in early July. If you visit in low season, you might have a better experience.

tourists waiting to get an instagram shot on nusa penida

5. The views will actually take your breath away.

Despite these setbacks, we did come away from the day thinking “that was great!” We love observing and interating with people from all different cultures. The landscapes are incredible and Kelingking Beach is an experience we’ll never forget.

6. You should definitely stay a few nights on Nusa Penida.

Unless you have time to stay for a few days on Nusa Penida, I would hesitate to recommend coming here at all. The great appeal of the island is the slow pace of life, away from the Aussie surfer dudes and ultra-spiritual yogis you find on Bali.

Great Places to Stay on Nusa Penida

We loved the beautiful Namaste bungalows , which is where we stayed on our 2014 trip to Nusa Penida. It’s about halfway between the fast boat dock at Tojapakeh and Crystal Bay.

namaste bungalow nusa penida

Just down the road from Namaste is Bintang Bungalows , where our good friends just stayed. They said it was great!

We also really enjoyed our villa at Petak Cottage on the north side of the island. It is walking distance to Penida Espresso, where they make delicious smoothie bowls. It also gave us an amazing view over Mount Agung as it was erupting!

And if thatā€™s not enough, you’ll see Angel’s Billabong and Kelingking Beach , where turquoise water flows over shimmering rocks, giving you the perfect photo opportunity for your feed!

All in all, itā€™s one Nusa Penida day trip you should definitely consider! But make sure to book early, as it sells out super fast.

šŸ•› Duration: 7 hours | ā Rating: 4.5/5 | Private Tour

In case you already took the private tour above along the western coast of Nusa Penida, why not take this one, covering the eastern side of the island?

Needless to say, this is one of the coolest tours in Nusa Penida.

7. INSTAGRAM DAY TRIP FROM BALI – BEST NUSA PENIDA TOURS

One reason why many visitors donā€™t come to Nusa Penida is the logistics from Bali, which can be a hassle for some.

But when joining this tour, the tour operator will make everything easier as they include transportation from everywhere in Bali and the tour around Nusa Penida.

This tour has got everything from the legendary Angel’s Billabong with its crystal clear tide pool to the iconic T-Rex Beach at Kelingking. And let’s not forget about the stunning archway at Broken Beach.

You’ll be snapping pics left and right, and the best part? Itā€™s a full-day tour, so youā€™ll have time to enjoy each moment!

What I particularly like about this tour is that thereā€™s a maximum of 6 travelers, and youā€™ll have the chance to make friends and have some laughter while taking awesome shots!

So pack your camera and your sense of adventure, and get ready for the trip of a lifetime!

9. SCUBA DIVING IN NUSA PENIDA

šŸ•› Duration: 4 hours | ā Rating: 5/5 | Group Tour

Another incredible Nusa Penida island tour that I highly recommend is this scuba diving trip, which will give you memories thatā€™ll last a lifetime!

Youā€™ll start the half-day tour at Pure Dive Resort, where youā€™ll meet with trained instructors who will guide you through the basics before you take the plunge into the water.

Of course, all levels are welcome, so you wonā€™t have to worry about that, which is pretty cool.

Also, itā€™s worth noting that the instructors will only take 2 participants at a time, providing maximum safety for everyone.

On top of that, you wonā€™t go deeper than 12 meters, and the dive will last between 35 and 55 minutes – more than enough time to make the most of it.

The top-notch gear and state-of-the-art training facilities make this scuba diving program one of the best tours in Nusa Penida you can get!

We did our first-ever dive with the team at pure. I was quite anxious about diving, but our guide put me at ease and I could enjoy my time under the water. Fabulous experience and itching to go diving again! A Tripadvisor Reviewer

13. SNORKELING & FREEDIVING TRIP AROUND NUSA PENIDA

šŸ•› Duration: 3 hours | ā Rating: 4.5/5 | Small Group Tour

Weā€™ve already covered a few snorkeling and diving Nusa Penida tours in this guide, however, what makes this one special is the spots youā€™ll see and the departure time.

You see, while I love and particularly recommend all tours in this guide when taking this one, youā€™ll leave at 7.30 am, which is before the crowded boats come over. That will give you enough to enjoy underwater life without getting disturbed.

The local operator knows the ins and outs of the best snorkeling and dive sites on the island, so you won’t have to worry about bumping into other tourists.

The package includes not only snorkeling or free-diving gear but wetsuits too, making your experience as comfortable as it gets.

Lastly, youā€™ll go diving in four different spots. Thatā€™s right – Four! Can you think of a better way to explore?!

14. NUSA LEMBONGAN & NUSA PENIDA SNORKELING TRIP

šŸ•› Duration: 3.5 hours | ā Rating: 5/5 | Group Tour

The first time I came to Bali, everything was unique, exciting, and so cool, and I could never get enough of the area.

And I wish I knew about this tour, as it covers both Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan – how fun!

You see, if you’re tired of fighting for snorkeling spots with the swarm of tourists, seeing both islands is the answer to your prayers.

Start the trip in Nusa Lembongan where a driver will pick you up, and youā€™ll head over to Jungut Batu Beach for the first swim of the day.

After that, make your way to Crystal Bay , Manta Bay, and Toya Pakeh for the best, most photogenic spots you can imagine.

Once youā€™re done snorkeling and taking photos, youā€™ll have lunch with other participants, and this is the best way to end the trip.

I recommend booking the tour as soon as possible as it gets booked up pretty quickly.

  • Buffet lunch
  • Snorkeling guide
  • Round-trip hotel transfers from any hotel in Lembongan
  • Snorkeling sessions at 3 spots in Nusa Penida and Lembongan

15. MANTA RAY SAFARI TOUR IN NUSA PENIDA

šŸ•› Duration: 2 hours | ā Rating: 4/5 | Group Tour

If you havenā€™t found your happy tour just yet, or the other trips are booked up, then this is certainly a fantastic choice.

You don’t have to be Jacques Cousteau to appreciate the abundance of reef fish and the colossal manta ray dancing gracefully in the water. This tour has got you covered!

Prepare for an adventure like no other, visiting the top four hot spots of Nusa Penida.

Soak up the sun and relax at the stunning Crystal Bay Beach, then jump into the water and experience the magic of Manta Bay.

Continue on to Gamat Bay, where you will be enchanted by the colorful coral gardens and diverse marine life.

Before going back, you’ll get to Wall Point, where you’ll feel like you’re swimming in a live aquarium.

In short, youā€™ll have a good time, and the price is affordable too!

A word of caution : This is a reasonably-priced tour, which is great for those on a budget, but keep in mind that there will be tourist crowds around, as opposed to a more exclusive, more expensive tour.

  • Snorkeling instructor
  • Transportation around the snorkeling spots
Amazing experience, snorkelled 4 spots with a variety of sea life, unbeatable experience for the price! Jamie, Tripadvisor

NUSA PENIDA ISLAND TRAVEL TIPS

Now that we’ve covered the best Nusa Penida tours, including the one-day tour Nusa Penida, here are some handy travel tips to know before you go.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT NUSA PENIDA?

The island can be visited year-round, however, the best time to visit Nusa Penida is from May to August during the dry season.

While there will be more people visiting, itā€™s not as humid and hot as the rainy season and you wonā€™t have as much rain.

Alternatively, April is a great time to visit as itā€™s the end of the rainy season and youā€™ll have plenty of opportunities for photos with fewer crowds.

IS NUSA PENIDA WORTH IT?

Definitely, Nusa Penida is one of the best places to visit in Indonesia and has some of the best beaches and viewpoints youā€™ve ever seen in your life.

Also, there are dozens of day trips from Bali , which is super convenient if you have limited time.

diamond beach nusa penida, atuh beach, atuh beach nusa penida, nusa penida tours

HOW LONG TO STAY IN NUSA PENIDA?

While you can take a day trip to Nusa Penida, I recommendĀ staying at least 2 daysĀ to see the most popular attractions.

And if time allows, why not visit Nusa Penida for 3 or 4 days?

This will give you enough time to explore the island with a scooter, eat delicious food, go on a snorkeling trip, or perhaps do a diving course.

ROADS ON NUSA PENIDA

Nusa Penida is the perfect place for an adventurous getaway. However, the roads are bumpy and narrow in parts, but the stunning views make it well worth the journey.

For this reason, when taking day trips to Nusa Penida, you’ll want to take motion sickness pills if you get sick easily.

TOUR CANCELATIONS

Sometimes, tours in Nusa Penida Island are canceled due to unfavorable weather conditions.

While tour operators try their best to accommodate everyone, unpredictable weather can cause a Nusa Penida tour to get canceled.

This is the reason why I recommend booking one of these Nusa Penida tours, as you’ll get a refund or be able to postpone your trip in case it’s canceled.

HOW TO GET TO NUSA PENIDA?

While taking a day trip to Nusa Penida is the best way to get here, there are other ways to come over, including by speedboat.

I recommend checking my full guide here below to know exactly how to get to Penida Island.

WHERE TO STAY IN NUSA PENIDA?

Nusa Penida Island has hundreds of accommodations to choose from, so I have narrowed it down to the best places to stay suitable for budget backpackers, luxury travelers, and everyone in between.

See the list of accommodations below that I personally recommend.

LUXURY: MAUA NUSA PENIDA

MAUA is one of the only luxury properties in Nusa Penida which is located on the cliffs near Gamat Bay and boasts stunning ocean views.

Perfect for couples with a choice of staying in one of the suite villas or luxury villas.

345326775

MID RANGE: LA ROJA BUNGALOWS

La Roja Bungalows is the most Instagrammable accommodation in Nusa Penida making it the perfect place to stay for couples or friends.

These cute wooden bungalows sleep up to 2 people and feature spacious rooms, a private bathroom, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi.

There is also an outdoor swimming pool, a shared lounge, and a restaurant with breakfast included for all guests.

3624862 17120614140060238065

BUDGET: NUANSA PENIDA HOSTEL

This is the most popular hostel on the island to accommodate solo backpackers and all other travelers on a budget.

Nuansa Penida Hostel also has a swimming pool, a restaurant, a mini-mart, and rental scooters available.

Nusa Penida Day Trip from Bali: Complete Guide

Located about a 30-minute boat ride from Bali, Nusa Penida is the largest of the three Nusa islands and definitely feels like paradise on earth!

With so many things to see and do on the island, it can be hard to see everything on a day trip. For this reason, I recommend sticking to the west side of Nusa Penida, which is home to some of the most unique attractions.

From breathtaking viewpoints to T-Rex-shaped cliffs overlooking stunningly blue waters, a natural infinity pool, and pristine beaches, a day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali is an absolute must!

In this blog post, Iā€™ll walk you through exactly how to plan an epic Nusa Penida day trip, including the best places to visit, how to get there from Bali, how to get around the island, tour suggestions, and other helpful tips.

Table of Contents

Planning a Nusa Penida Day Trip

If you prefer to visit Nusa Penida as part of a guided tour , you have the option between a group or private tour. Both will take you to Kelingking Beach, Angelā€™s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Crystal Bay.

If you have the budget, I highly recommend booking the private tour as youā€™ll be able to customize your itinerary and choose how long to spend at each attraction.

Below are a few recommendations for Nusa Penida day tours from Bali:

Another option is to book a snorkeling and sightseeing tour . After a pick-up from your hotel in Bali and a boat transfer to Nusa Pena, you’ll spend the first half of the day snorkeling at four different spots, namely Manta Bay, Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay, and Wall Point. After lunch, you’ll then visit all the top attractions on the west coast.

DIYing your day trip to Nusa Penida

For those who donā€™t want to visit as part of a tour, you can easily customize your day trip. Below youā€™ll find all the best places to visit. Make sure to follow the same order if you want to skip the crowds and maximize your time at each attraction.

Kelingking Beach

The first place I recommend visiting during your day trip to Nusa Penida is Kelingking Beach . This is because itā€™s the most popular attraction on the island and thus the most crowded. Plan to get there at least before 9.30 a.m to avoid the crowds.

The view from the top of the T-Rex shaped cliff offers a breathtaking panoramic view and the white sand beach below is absolutely stunning! It’s no doubt the most beautiful photo spot in Bali .

Most people only visit the viewpoint area but if youā€™re fit and not afraid of heights, you can also hike down to the beach.

Note that the hike is quite hard due to the steep steps but well worth it for a chance to see the beach up close.

There’s no entrance fee except for a small parking fee of IDR 5k.

Angelā€™s Billabong

The next stop is Angelā€™s Billabong , a natural infinity pool located about a 40-minute drive from Kelingking. The pool boasts crystal-clear water and is definitely a unique spot to swim in (during low tide only!).

When the tide is high, gigantic waves crash into the pool, making swimming extremely dangerous. There have been a few accidents before so make sure to always follow the guidelines and only go into the pool when swimming is allowed.

Again there’s no entrance fee except for a small parking fee of IDR 5k.

Related post: Guide to visiting Angelā€™s Billabong in Nusa Penida

Broken Beach

Another unique place to visit is Broken Beach . It’s located within the same area as Angelā€™s Billabong and can be reached on foot in less than 5 minutes.

Here youā€™ll find a little cove surrounded by tall cliffs except for the natural arched bridge that allows water to flow in and out. Unfortunately, itā€™s not possible to go down to the beach but you can still admire the view from above.

a woman sitting at the edge of a cliff at Broken Beach

Related post: Visiting Broken Beach in Nusa Penida

Manta Ray Viewpoint

If you turn right towards the cliffs about halfway in between Angelā€™s Billabong and Broken Beach, youā€™ll find the Manta Ray viewpoint. If youā€™re patient enough, you can spot Manta Rays swimming in the ocean below.

Crystal Bay

The final stop on this Nusa Penida day trip from Bali is Crystal Bay. Surrounded by rows of palm trees, Crystal Bay is the perfect place to relax after a long travel day.

Itā€™s also a prime spot for snorkeling as the bay is full of fish. I booked a snorkeling tour when I was visiting Nusa Lembongan and we stopped at Manta Point and Crystal Bay. I even got the opportunity to see some huge Mola Mola fish on the tour.

Just a heads up though, donā€™t expect a pristine white sand beach like you would see at Kelingking. Crystal Bay is rocky in places and the waves can sometimes be rough.

Palm trees and colorful umbrellas on Crystal Bay in Nusa Penida

Honestly, it wasnā€™t my favorite beach but it was still nice to watch the sunset there. There are a few restaurants here as well as a couple of street food stalls along the beach.

If you have time, I also recommend hiking to Pandan Beach , which is more secluded. The trail can be found by taking the stairs on the left side of Crystal Bay.

There’s no entrance fee for Crystal Bay except for a parking fee of IDR 5k.

small islands near Crystal Bay

How to get to Nusa Penida from Bali?

If you’re not joining a tour, you’ll need to arrange transportation to Nusa Penida on your own.

You first need to take a ferry from Sanur in Bali. You can easily book your ticket online or go directly to Sanur Harbor. Youā€™ll find several boat operators at the harbor but keep in mind that you might need to wait in line if youā€™re visiting during high season.

The boat will then drop you off at Toya Pakeh Harbor and the next step will be to hire a taxi with driver , join a guided tour , or rent a motorbike .

waves crashing along Kelingking beach

Note : The roads in Nusa Penida aren’t the best and are full of potholes! Only attempt to ride a motorbike if youā€™re highly experienced as it can be dangerous driving on these roads.

While most people choose to visit Nusa Penida as a day trip from Bali, you can also take a boat from Nusa Lembongan . You can buy boat tickets near the Yellow Bridge on Nusa Lembongan ( click here for the location ) for about IDR 50k.

We are travelling to Bali with our family next month and want to book some tours / prv drivers via your website. One of the tours we intend to book is “Nusa Penida West Tour + Snorkelling”. You have competive prices on your site for most tours, however this tour (4pers) is in total 390,31ā‚¬.

We also looked at a number of other providers and came up with amounts between 120-200ā‚¬ for a comparable tour. We wonder what the big difference could be, or whether the price on your website is correct.

Looking forward hearing from you!

This tour includes: – Private car & driver (to and from) – Snorkeling costs (equipment & boat) – Entrance fee to Nusa Penida – Entrance fees to attractions – Round trip Fast Boat tickets from Sanur to Nusa Penida

Safe travels, Michael

Hi if this is possible to do we would like the same option. could you tell me the cost of a boat for 2 or if you have this where we could join someone else for this option and only two snorkeling spots, one with manta and one with turtle viewing most likely, and parts of the east side as well as the west side too.

Usually the boat takes out groups of 8 to the water. You do also have the option for do a private snorkeling trip for 2, but of course it will be more costly. If that’s not an issue, I can have it organized for you.

Hi Michael,

Please advise this Nusa Penida Tour is good and comfortable for family as i am coming along with my wife and my son who is 8 year old. Hope there are no issues.

Thanks, Jagadeesh

Visiting Bali in mid Dec 2023. Have booked hotel in Nusa Dua. Some questions …

1. When should I book my airport transfers? 2. Can I book a car for a day – open ended? Not sure what we would do. 3. Could you please point me to a site that has authentic info of things to do in Nusa Dua. The basic plan is “just chill”. Have visited Bali before and done a few day trips. This visit’s theme is “no rush” šŸ™‚

1) I would suggest booking your Airport Transfer a week before your flight. A few days prior at the latest.

2) Yes of course! You can book a Private Car & Driver for the day and create your own itinerary.

3) I’m not certain of any reputable sites that has authentic information on Nusa Dua. Perhaps that’s something for me to work on!

Thanks Mike. Please do write about Nusa Dua.

Hi Michael, is snorkeling gear included with the west tour + snorkeling package?

Hi Eden, yes it’s included.

Best Regards, Nasyah Assistant to Michael – Bali Holiday Secrets

Hello! I just want to clarify something for your tours, your West tour lists things on the east side and your East tour lists stuff on the west side. Is this a mistake?

“Nusa Penida East Tour – Broken Beach. Angels Billabong, Kelingking Beach, Paluang Cliff, Crystal Bay Beach Nusa Penida West Tour – Atuh Beach, Diamond Beach, Tree House Molenteng, King of five, Teletubies Hills”

Also, if I book the tour with Kelingking or the snorkel tour + Kelingking tour and stay in Nusa Penida without needing a ride back to where we came from, can we save any money doing this? We are moving from one place to another and wanted to book a driver for the switch over and the tour.

Hi Michael – you just picked up an epic editing mistake. Can’t believe I missed that! Thanks so much for the heads-up.

The ride back is literally the cheapest part of the tour, but I’m going to make an option where you get to drop the return journey. The issue is then going to be people asking to pre-book their return ferry tickets, which will be difficult for me to do, which is why so far it’s a one-day inclusive tour.

Let me work on it and get back to you.

Hi, We have 2 kids 5 and 6 years old. What would be our options to do a day tour in Nysa Penida (or part of it)?

Hi Emmanuel – the options for day tours to Nusa Penida are all listed on this booking page.

The article mention that “You will need a reasonable level of fitness and the minimum age is 15 years old with parents or guardians.”

Just double checking, since our kids are 5-6 years old, there is no option for us to do the Nusa Penida Tour?

Hi Emmanuel – the reason that is said is that the ferry companies carry a level of liability for passengers, especially as they often leave from Sanur (before the new ferry building is finished) off the beach – which is not a physical environment conducive to the safety of children.

Please understand this is not reticence on my part, I am simply doing the best I can to limit guests from making a mistake in judgement, on your behalf, based on experience and what the third-party operators are capable of with respect to safety.

I’ve caught that ferry a few times, and let me say with crystal clarity, I would not want to take any of my family under 15 on that trip. Hope this helps.

Safe travels, Michael.

How long is spent at each location ? Is there flexibility to alter the stops? we are fast travellers, and don’t like to hang around the one spot for too long?

Hi Jess, how long you spend at each attraction is entirely up to you. You want to get out, get the shot and move on? No problem, just tell your driver. But remember, for the Nusa Penida Tour the fast boat returns to Bali at a set time.

Hi, i like to book a day tour to nusa penida for a group of 12 people, but the option is only up to 6 people. is there any other options for large group or i have to book 2 tour for 12 people.

Hi Desmond, let me check with my driver team to see which is best, either 2 x 6 or 1 x 12 passengers per booking. Give me a day our 2 to get back to you.

Hi Desmond, the answer is you must book 2 tours of 6 people. We can get you on the same boat, but on Nusa Penida you will also be in 2 cars as the roads are too narrow for a minivan.

Hi Michael, Once we book an activity, what if it rains too much or we want to cancel or postpone the activity to another day? Do you help with refunds as well? I hear Bali rains are bad in December so I am unsure how to book for attractions.

Hi Naga, 50% of your booking can be refunded if cancelled outside 7 days of your tour date. This is to compensate our drivers as they would have refused other jobs to confirm your reservation. Otherwise, no refunds or date changes permitted.

Hi Michael. We have a group of 8 people. Is it possible to book a tour for that size for this tour and the Ubud tour? I wasn’t sure if we would have to book 2 separate tours of 4 or if it is possible to book the mini van for the tours. Thank you!

Hi Matt – for the Nusa Penida Tour you are better off booking 2 tours of 4 people. For an Ubud Tour, you can book a minivan and specify the South Bali option. You can then let your driver know what your preferred itinerary is on the day.

safe travels, Michael

Hi Michael – is the Nusa Penida + Snorkeling tour flexible? I’m interested in booking but only stopping at 2 spots for snorkeling and making our way East to see some attractions as part of the day.

It’s unclear if the snorkeling tour is on a boat with other people and therefore would have to hit all four snorkel spots.

Hi Shane. I’m unsure how big your group is, but we can arrange a small boat for 2-4 people where you can dictate the itinerary.

Now, let’s dive into the unparalleled beauty of Nusa Penida West Tour Attractions

Nusa Penida West Tour Attractions

Angel’s billabong.

This natural infinity pool found in Nusa Penida West has become one of the most Instagrammable spots in Bali. The spot is named after the crystal clear and calm waters which feel like a pool in the middle of the ocean. The rock cliffs that surround the area also make this a fascinating place to enjoy a sun-soaked day in Nusa Penida

Kelingking Beach

One of the most famous and beautiful beaches on the Island, Kelingking Beach’s name means pinkie finger in Indonesian. This beach is renowned for its iconic T-Rex-shaped cliff and turquoise blue waters. It’s a must-see destination on your tour of Nusa Penida West, and the perfect spot for some stunning photographs!

Broken Beach

panoramic view of broken beach nusa penida west on nusa penida west tour

An extraordinary natural wonder, Broken Beach is a testament to the raw and untamed beauty of Nusa Penida. This unique geological formation got its name from the archway that encircles the bay, creating a ‘broken’ effect. The turquoise waters contrast beautifully with the rugged cliffs, making it a perfect spot for awe-inspiring photos. Legend has it that a giant creature was banished here, leaving behind this breathtaking landscape.

Crystal Bay

Things to do in Nusa Penida Crystal Bay Beach on Nusa Penida west tour

The beautiful crystal clear bay of Nusa Penida West is one of the most alluring beaches situated in the area. As the name suggests, Crystal Bay is renowned for its crystal-clear waters that mirror the blue skies. This idyllic beach is surrounded by palm trees and offers a serene spot for relaxation. But the real magic happens beneath the surface. Crystal Bay is a popular spot for snorkelling, with vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. It’s like stepping into a living aquarium!

Snorkelling Spots of Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a snorkeller’s paradise, offering an underwater world teeming with life and colour. From Manta Point where you can swim with majestic manta rays, to Gamat Bay where you’ll find colourful coral gardens, each spot holds its own charm.

Travel Tips For Nusa Penida West Tours

  • Tackle the West and East Side Tours separately: I’ve made a separate blog post for Nusa Penida West and Nusa Penida East tours because its really hard to pack everything into one day- is it possible yes? but if you want to take lots of photos, head down to the beach and feel a bit more relaxed and not be rushed I recommend doing a Nusa Penida West trip and an east Nusa Penida day trip separately .
  • Motion Sickness Medication: Not needed by everyone but a good few people on our Bali/Sanur trip to Nusa Penida had severe motion sickness due to the rough seas and also struggled with motion sickness on our snorkelling trip- it really does get rough on occasions.
  • Bring a change of clothes: For the Tour that involves snorkelling, You’ll head out to the snorkelling stops first, then go onto the island and explore Nusa Penida West island tour attractions. Having a change of clothes and a towel will ensure you enjoy the rest of your tour in comfort.
  • Sun Protection: Nusa Penida is very exposed to the sun, so please bring a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. There is VERY MINIMAL shade at most of the attractions. I actually do not remember any shade on the Nusa Penida West tours, so cover up if you’re sun-sensitive.
  • Comfortable Shoes: We recommend wearing comfortable shoes for this tour as you’ll be doing quite a bit of walking. Flip flops or sandals are good for the beach portions, but some of the terrain is rougher if you’re descending down to Kelingking Beach or walking the circumference of Broken Beach.
  • Waterproof Camera: If you’re looking to capture the days memories, bring a waterproof camera for your snorkelling trip! Alternatively, phones come with great waterproof cases that can help protect them if it rains or while snorkelling/swimming.
  • Bring Cash: There is no ATM on the Island, so make sure you bring enough cash for any souvenirs or food/drinks that you may want to buy as well as tip for your guide or driver.

Nusa Penida West Tour FAQ

Absolutely! Nusa Penida is a beautiful destination and the West side of the island offers incredible attractions, stunning landscapes and unique experiences that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s definitely a place worth exploring if you’re looking for something different from your standard Bali holiday. Read my full post: Is Nusa Penida Worth Visiting?

I recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes for the tour. It’s extremely hot, so lightweight, fast-drying clothes are best. If you’re planning on swimming or snorkelling, make sure to bring your swimsuit and a towel as well. It’s also important to wear sun protection such as sunglasses, hats and sunscreen since Nusa Penida is quite exposed to the sun.

The best time to visit Nusa Penida West or do a Nusa Penida East tour is during the dry months from April to October. During this time, you’re likely to experience clear skies and calmer waters. The wet season runs from November to March and while it can still be enjoyable during these months, the seas tend to be rougher and there’s more chance of rain. We visited during October, and it was still pretty dry. I don’t remember it raining at all actually.

A number of factors will play a role in the price of a Nusa Penida tour namely: Is it a private or join-in/shared tour? Is the one-day trip Nusa Penida tour from Bali or Nusa Penida, Is there included hotel pick up and drop off in Bali, What is included in the day tour package, The nusa penida day trip cost can range between as little as 400 000 IDR (Indonesian Rupiah) to 2 million IDR, Therefore the Nusa Penida tour package does depend on what type of experience you want.

Nusa Penida Day trips are dependent on which side of the island you want to see, the East or the West. I strongly recommend picking one day for each. This is my top pick for a West Nusa Penida Day tour: West Nusa Penida island Tour with Snorkelling , My other best Nusa Penida tour is the 2day 1night Nusa Penida tour

Most tours include a hotel pick/up and drop off in Bali and return boat transfers too. If you’re choosing a Bali Nusa Penida tour without this option: Check out separate fast boat ticket prices from Bali to Nusa Penida here

Yes, you can definitely do this. Nusa Penida is only a 25-minute boat ride away from Nusa Lembongan so it’s possible to make a day trip out of it. Once you arrive at the harbour in Nusa Penida, there are plenty of tour operators and drivers who will tout their services.

Yes, you can do a day trip from Sanur to Nusa Penida. It’s a journey of usually around 1 hour and 10 minutes boat ride but it’s still very doable. We took this route on our first Nusa Penida experience. This is the main way to get to Nusa Penida from Bali.

It really depends on what you’re looking for. Nusa Penida Wast offers a lot of photo-worthy attractions like Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach and Crystal Bay while the Eest side is more relaxed with spectacular views from Diamond and Atuh Beach and the insta-famous Rumah Pohon Treehouse stunning. I definitely recommend doing both as it’s quite hard to pack everything into one day.

We’ve had quite an adventure exploring the best of Nusa Penida West tour, haven’t we? From the majestic Kelingking Beach to the serene natural pool of Angel’s Billabong, every moment has been a testament to the beauty that Indonesia has to offer.

Now, it’s your turn to dive into this experience! Choose from our top three recommended tours and embark on your own journey of discovery.

When you return, sun-kissed and brimming with stories, remember to share your experiences with me! I can’t wait to hear about your adventures in Nusa Penida. So, are you ready to make some memories? Book your tour now and let Nusa Penida’s magic unfold before your eyes.

We chose West Tour. We stayed in Nusa Penida. Our driver Dharma came to the hotel to pick us up. Drove safely and nicely through the hills until we reached Broken Beach and Angels Billabong. These places are spectacular. After we went to Kelingking Beach, where Dharma stayed in line for us to take pictures. After he drove us to Paluang Cliff, and he climbed over ladders to take the best shot. We had a great and full lunch in a nice restaurant(included in package). Finally we went to Crystal Bay Beach, where we could swim and snorkeling. Dharma was patiently waiting for us and brought us back to the hotel around 3:30 pm. Totally recommend it. If you have the chance, go on a private tour, not group ones. More comfortable and enjoyable. Thanks again Dharma and Nusa Penida Golden Tour.

Good evening,

As discussed, here's my review:

We highly recommend this team. The 2 drivers are from the island so they know the place very well. They were very professional and very kind with us. Komang, the driver in Nusa Penida, help us a lot with the photos and even carrying our stuffs to be more confortable during the tour. He also gave as plenty of time for all the photos we took. The menu on the restaurant during the lunch is very variated, which is nice.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to take this opportunity to commend the services offered by your tour guides in this beautiful island, Nusa Penida.

Nusa Penida offer great attractions with scenic beauties in many different natural settings. These beauties cannot be possibly explored at comfort without the great help and guides from Mr. Komang.

Mr. Komang Sidan is a resourceful and dedicated tour guide throughout our journey. He helps us to take photographs in such innovative ways that we are rest assured of beautiful shots. He sets us on comfortable drive and accommodates to our requests at all time. His resourcefulness and attention to our mood and doubts helps us to even recognise what we did not realise we need for the journey.

Mr. Komang’s youth surprises us as he is such an experienced guide for his age. He is always on time and plans our trips with care and caters to our needs. We do not need to worry anything when he is around. He treats us like good friends as we instantly feel so much at home. His proficiency in English is amazing and we can totally communicate at ease.

He is always matching our tastes and pace. Mr. Komang’s honesty and sincerity deserve big praise and his dedication to his job as tour guide and driver actually inspired us to do the same with our life.

Next, thank you also Mr. Made Santa and Mr. Made Yuda for arranging our trip here. You all have been very friendly and helpful.

Thank you and we will miss your hospitality.

Kind regards,

Dr. Shahnewaz

Hi Santra, I would like to thank you for organising our trip to Nusa Penida. I appreciate the way all the trip was planned including our pick and drop from the hotel. Mr. MADE was on time, infact before time to pick us up from hotel with clean car. Then he brought us at SANUR beach and you met us with speed boat tickets on time and helped us boarding the Speed boat timely and hassle free. In Nusa Penida, we were greeted by LEO and NANA. Both of them were very friendly and explained lot about Nusa Penida. Special thanks to LEO for escorting us all the beaches. At last, we had very wonderful lunch at your hotel BTM. Indeed, we liked the lunch very much. Pizza and Sandwich were very tasty with fresh fruit juices.

I sincerely thank you for making this trip wonderful for us.
