5 Things to Know About River Cruising with American Queen Voyages

american queen steamboat

Travel Market Report recently spent a week onboard American Queen Voyages' American Queen for the line's first-ever President's Cruise. Onboard the Lower Mississippi sailing, which went from New Orleans to Memphis, were the line's new president Cindy D'Aoust and John Waggoner, founder and chairman. During several dinners with both onboard we got to hear more about the line's past and where it's headed.

Currently in a bit of a transitional phase, a river cruise with American Queen Voyages combines elements of traditional U.S. riverboat cruising with contemporary ideas intended to bring it into the future.

For advisors who have never sailed with AQV, here are a few things to know before recommending the line to clients.

1. Nothing but North America You won't find a European itinerary with American Queen Voyages. The line's expedition ship doesn't venture to the Arctic or Antarctic. It's ocean-going vessels don't make their way across the pond.  American Queen Voyages is exactly what the name says it is, American.

North American that is, though something like 95% of the itineraries are in the United States, with a smattering of itineraries that visit parts of Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica.

American Queen Voyages, formerly American Queen Steamboat Company, got its start on the Mississippi River back in 2012. Today, you'll find river voyages on the Ohio, Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers, as well as along the Columbia and Snake Rivers. The line has four ships plying these waterways, all crewed entirely by U.S. citizens.

The cruise line also offers expedition sailings to Alaska on its sole expedition ship, Ocean Victory. On its two ocean ships – Ocean Voyager and Ocean Navigator – the line offers Great Lakes sailings on all five Great Lakes, up the St. Lawrence and into Canada and along the U.S.'s east coast and down into Costa Rica and Mexico. Because these ships are not U.S.-flagged, their crew maintains a more international mix.

2. No Cookie Cutter Ships With the sole exception of Ocean Voyager and Ocean Navigator, which are nearly identical, all of American Queen Victory's ships are different, particularly in the line's riverboat fleet.

The 436-passenger American Queen, the boat TMR sailed on during the line's first annual President's Cruise, is the grand dame of the fleet, the largest paddlewheel steamboat ever built. It's steamboat-era traditional, with dark woods and gleaming brass. There's a ladies' parlor with cherry woods, genteel décor and furniture designed for sipping tea and chatting. Across the way is the gentleman's card room with dark woods, stuffed animals, an oversized fish on the wall, and tables and chairs set up for drinking whiskey over a card game. The main theater, called the Grand Saloon, is a replica of the Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. As for cabins, there are several suite choices and some inside cabins, but most are outside rooms that connect directly to the circular promenade that surrounds the boat on decks four and five.

American Empress, which sails exclusively on the Columbia and Snake Rivers, is nearly half the size of American Queen, carrying 223 passengers. Like American Queen it has an old-timely feel, though its paddlewheel is mostly for show (it provides only a small proportion of the propulsion onboard). Unlike on the Queen, there are no inside cabins on Empress.

The smaller 166-passenger American Duchess and 145-passenger American Countess have a considerably more modern feel with higher ceilings and lots of windows for a much airier feel. Décor on these boats is more akin to a luxury boutique hotel than a steamboat, with lighter colors and a more geometric-styled design scheme. The main bar outside the dining room on American Duchess, for instance, would fit in in just about any contemporary hotel lobby. Between the two, American Countess has fewer – and smaller – cabin choices, with American Duchess having the line's only two-story loft suites in the fleet. Of the two, American Countess also brings back some of the traditions found on American Queen including a library, chart room and lanai cabins (though these cabins have a small, fenced section of the lanai for private use).

The remainder of AQV's fleet comprises three ocean ships, one of which is an expedition vessel that offers magnificent viewing spaces, hands-on science programs, floating marina for easy kayak and Zodiac loading and unloading.

3. Dine Your Way through Your Itinerary The onboard culinary experience is an integral component of an American Queen Voyages sailing. While American Queen Steamboat Company always offered local flavors on each itinerary, American Queen Voyages, under the guidance of new president Cindy D'Aoust and culinary ambassador Regina Charboneau, is taking this much farther. Today, guests will find an almost entirely new menu combined with the stories behind the dishes, giving visitors a better understanding of the people along the routes they're traveling.

Each night of our Lower Mississippi sailing from New Orleans to Memphis, the dinner menu started with a short history of the cuisine in the region of that day's port stop.

Here's an excerpt, "The Acadiana foodways and greater New Orleans area were influenced by the Germans who settled along the lower Mississippi. The sausage making and smokehouse culinary culture here is widely attributed to the skilled German artisan butchers who settled in the northern parts of the bayou… Andouille sausage and smoked Tasso, essential to many Creole and Cajun dishes, were created by these artisans…"

The menu that night had items like sweet potato latkes, white bean and Andouille soup, and cod with andouille in saffron broth.

Another night focused on the Italian and Chinese immigrants to the Mississippi Delta. Menu items that night included spicy sweet chili shrimp, oxtail soup, and chicken parmesan.

Sometimes, individual menu dishes came with a history as well.

On the night the menu offered Creole Daube, we learned, "Daube was introduced to New Orleans by the French Creoles who brought the preparation from their native France… it is the Louisiana version of Beef Bourguignon."

Our favorite "local" culinary moments were the mornings local pastry makers brought their specialties onboard (the donuts in Natchez, Miss!), something AQV president D'Aoust said she's hoping to do in more ports of call.

4. Fairly All-Inclusive A river cruise with American Queen Voyages is fairly inclusive. Food, unlimited drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, a pre-night hotel stay and a hop-on hop-off tour in each port is included in the fare. Not included are premium drinks (on our sailing, there were a handful of beer brands and wines not included in the price), premium excursions, spa services (not all vessels in the fleet have a spa), purchases from the onboard shop, and pre- and post-cruise airport transfers.

Of all the exclusions, the last one was the one we found most notable. For a line that says it wants to provide a seamless experience from booking to end of cruise, it's the one piece that's missing. D'Aoust told TMR she's aware of that and plans to address it at some point in the future, but only when she's sure it can be done right.

5. Four Hours a Mile One evening on a stroll around the promenade, we stopped to chat with a gentleman who spent most evenings sitting outside his cabin watching the river roll by. A repeat (several times over) American Queen Steamboat Company cruiser, we asked him who he thought the ideal passenger for the line is. He told us, someone in their 60s and older who likes their travel to happen at four miles an hour.

That certainy is the traditional demographic the line has been pulling in since it launched in 2012 (more 70s and 80s than 60s), but American Queen Voyages is working to change that. Our sailing had a honeymoon couple in their 20s – they're both American history buffs and he's in a blues band – and a three-generation family that included two young couples, both pregnant. There were definitely more 60 years olds than 80 year olds.

(FYI, the line's expedition vessel, Ocean Victory skews much younger. The Columbia and Snake Rivers cruises also skew a tad younger.)

One way the line is trying to entice new cruisers is through an expanded – and slightly more active – shore excursion program with more premium options that go further afield. The line is also adding more bikes and will soon be providing bike trail maps to guests who want to explore on their own.

With that said, the overall experience remains a leisurely one. The river boats usually spend nearly a full day in port, with most people choosing to spend part of the day relaxing with a book, playing cards or even napping. In the evening, a piano player sings before and after dinner, the main theater show might feature music (on our sailing we had banjo one night, guitar another, a Broadway tribute and a bona fide Memphis blues band) or could be a Mark Twain impersonator telling tales, and late night live music and dancing (think 50s, 60s and 70s) gets started at 9:30.

This Bourbon-Focused River Cruise Combines Whiskey With Paddleboat Charm

A traditional sternwheeler cruise along the meandering Ohio and Mississippi Rivers offers a glimpse into the era when the Mississippi River was the western frontier of the United States. The small towns that sprung up along the rivers were far removed from the urban cities of the east, and the great rivers were the main means of transportation.

Those peak years of transport and life along the river are long past. Still, there is something immensely appealing about traveling the rivers on slow-moving, flat-bottom boats with traditional Victorian gingerbread trim.

My husband and I recently did just that on a nine-day, bourbon-themed cruise aboard American Countess, a classic riverboat with twin red paddlewheels gracing the stern. Along the way, we paid day-long visits to four small cities in Kentucky, as well as at one of Mark Twain’s favorite river towns, Cape Girardeau in Missouri, and docked just steps away from Gateway Arch National Park in St. Louis.

The American Countess is the newest boat among the fleet operated by American Queen Voyages , and the itinerary shows just how great an experience an all-American river cruise can be.

The pre-cruise adventure in Louisville

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Brown Hotel (@brownhotel)

Each of the itineraries with American Queen Voyages begins with a complimentary pre-cruise night at a distinctive hotel in the departure city. We flew into Louisville mid-afternoon and made our way to The Brown Hotel , which was built in the early 1900s by J. Graham Brown, a flamboyant millionaire lumberman and capitalist.

2023 marks The Brown’s 100th anniversary. It’s the home of the hot brown, a distinctive breakfast offered piping hot in a mini-skillet. Now served throughout the day, a hot brown is an open-face turkey sandwich loaded with bacon, tomatoes, and mornay sauce, and has been a Louisville tradition since it was created in 1926 by hotel chef Fred Schmidt. When we arrived at the hotel, we were promptly welcomed by cruise staff, assigned a room, and briefed on the following day’s embarkation procedures. Luggage transfers to our cabin and bus transportation to the American Countess were scheduled by the cruise line. Until the following afternoon, passengers were free to explore Louisville any way they chose.

The city is filled with Southern charm and hospitality, and there is much to see — from breweries and bourbon tastings to Churchill Downs and the Louisville Slugger baseball bat factory, Museum Row, 4th Street Live, charming shops, distinctive restaurants, the Muhammed Ali Center, and the wonderful Church of the Assumption.

The cruise line offers two Louisville excursions for an additional fee: a private backstretch tour of Churchill Downs, and a bourbon tour at the legendary Castle and Key Distillery and gardens .

The real cruise begins

AQSC Christening of American Countess

Stepping aboard the classic riverboat with its twin paddlewheels gracing the stern, we were greeted by crew members who directed us to our cabin and encouraged us to join other passengers in the spacious lounge for a welcome cocktail – bourbon was a spotlight, of course, with other options like Champagne also readily available.

The boat left the dock at 4:30 PM, following the official “All Aboard” whistle. Although the view of the bow was exciting as the lines were hauled and the gangplank hoisted back into position, I couldn’t resist drifting toward the stern, drawn by the turning of the immense paddlewheels. The vessel has four diesel-electric generators that operate the rudder propellers and bow thrusters. Even though this vessel isn’t fueled by steam like paddle boats were in the past, the wheels provide part of the propulsion, and the rhythmic lap of the paddles against the water is mesmerizing.

american countess

Take note: this vessel is a boat and not a ship. The exterior is in the style of a traditional American riverboat, with a gleaming white exterior, arches, and railings, adorned by classic red horizontal stripes and red paddlewheels. The main floor deck, also red, denotes a no-go zone for passengers while underway. Decks 2 and 3 are home to passenger cabins as well as public spaces both inside and out. Cabin balconies on Deck 2 are private, with two chairs and a small table, and semi-private verandas on Deck 3 have gated seating areas, open to a public walking/jogging path that encircles the boat.

Sun Deck Sun Deck - American Countess.American Queen Steamboat Company

On both Decks 2 and 3, comfortable white rocking chairs afford passengers a view of the passing shoreline when the weather is clear and the winds are light. Additional seating is available on the open upper deck, and a smattering of umbrellas offers shade.

Before the boat became the American Countess, it was the Kanesville Queen, a casino boat originally built in 1995. In a complete top-to-bottom renovation inside and out, 60 feet in length was added and the casino removed. Now, instead of gaming tables, guests gather in the expansive main salon with its traditional paneled bar, a beautiful theater, and a full-width dining room that has views to both port and starboard.

The Countess feels somewhat like a boutique hotel, with 123 passenger cabins, (most suited for two passengers). The décor is pleasantly contemporary with a tasteful, subdued color scheme, well-chosen art and sculptures, and fresh floral arrangements in all public spaces and on all dining tables. While an ocean-going cruise ship might have multiple pools, dining spaces, and attractions for all ages, river cruising offers a leisurely pace, intimate spaces, and a focus on the people one meets and the small towns and scenery along the route.

The Theater The Theater - American Countess.American Queen Steamboat Company

The floor plan of the Countess clusters public spaces – theater, guest services desk, a small shop, and the curving staircase – around the boat’s main bar on Deck 1. Called the Grand Lobby, this is where passengers can spontaneously gather for cocktails and conversation, where trivia games and contests are held, and where musicians play dance music after dinner. The floor-to-ceiling windows that run the length of the space perfectly frame the passing river vistas.

Tucked into a space adjacent to the grand staircase is a baby grand piano that’s used for impromptu singalongs, and where the ship’s musicians get together for informal jazz performances.

The Bar - American Countess.American Queen Steamboat Company The Bar

The Grand Lobby Bar is open most days from 11 AM until the last guests are ready to say goodnight. Double doors adjacent to the bar allow access to the theater, a multi-level space that’s perfect for port talks, cooking demonstrations, afternoon movies, or informative presentations. For this itinerary, special guest Michael Veach, a noted bourbon historian and member of the Bourbon Hall of Fame, held court with several presentations and tastings for passengers who were eager to learn about bourbon’s history and how the spirit is made.

Grand Dining Room - American Countess.American Queen Steamboat Company Grand Dining Room

Behind the Grand Lobby is the boat’s full-width dining room, featuring white-clothed tables for two or for a group, with gourmet fare at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The more casual River Grill, one deck above and far astern, offers buffet service for breakfast and lunch, a variety of sandwiches, and prime rib as well as other selected entrees for dinner each evening. It’s a popular alternative to the main dining room. There is a small bar as well, where guests may enjoy a view of the turning paddlewheels while the boat is underway. In port, a shaded patio invites outdoor lounging and dining.

Perks Coffee Room, near the bow, is open 24 hours a day, with fresh coffee, pastries or fresh-from-the-oven cookies, and a soft ice cream machine with a variety of toppings. A small fitness center is neatly tucked into space on the opposite forward side of Deck 1.

The Library The Library - American Countess.American Queen Steamboat Company

Other comfortable guest spaces include a well-stocked library with plush, comfortable seating, as well as a card and games room outfitted with chess, checkers, backgammon, and card tables with leather chairs and an assortment of puzzles. One deck above, another hideaway is the Chart Room, where passengers can study route maps and immerse themselves in nautical lore and riverboat stories.

Chart Room Chart Room - American Countess.American Queen Steamboat Company

Dinner, however, is the main event. On our sailing, there were two seatings each evening: dinner at 5:15, followed by showtime in the theater at 9, or the schedule in reverse with a 6:30 theater call, followed by late-seating dinner at 7:45.

A company defining the modern American river cruise

In an interview with Cindy D’Aoust, who assumed duties as the new president of American Queen Voyages in January 2023, she emphasized her goal of “simplicity, affordability, and convenience” for the passenger river cruising experience.

Vice president of marketing Angela Composto, who is also new to the company, notes that the cruise line intends to build new relationships with the towns along their routes and has plans in the works, primarily in the area of food and beverage service, that are designed to “surprise and delight” passengers.

The presence of American Queen Voyages culinary ambassador Regina Charboneau, affectionately known as the biscuit queen of Natchez and a well-known cookbook author, and noted restaurateur Dickie Brennan, of The Bourbon House and other iconic restaurants in New Orleans, on this cruise did exactly that.

Charboneau has added some of her Southern specialties like shrimp and grits, deep-fried frog legs, and her biscuits while tweaking traditional favorites like lobster and duck. Her goal is to introduce regional specialties whenever possible on the various itineraries, and to add customer favorites throughout the fleet.

On-board entertainment

Cruise director Emma Harper teamed with assistant cruise directors Nick McCarthy and Michael Nicholas to present passengers with varied entertainment every day. In addition to scheduled movies, games, and onboard quiz shows, the talented and the American Countess Ensemble and Show Band puts on Broadway-worthy productions featuring energetic and eclectic song and dance numbers – from “Riversong,” a musical experience with a variety of river-inspired songs, to a vocal collection of blues and jazz tunes. Another show features country favorites, and yet another, “Just Go to the Movies,” showcases big screen favorites.

There were passenger team events like trivia or name that tune, cocktail and bourbon tastings, afternoon movies in the theater, a cooking show presented by the Charboneau and Brennan, bourbon lectures and tastings by Veach, and destination talks prior to each port call.

McCarthy serves as the cruise “riverlorian” in addition to being a featured performer. With daily lectures that offer background information and little-known facts about the rivers and their history, these Riverlorian presentations were consistently some of the best-attended special events of the cruise.

Staff and Crew

Unlike officers on large ships who tend to remain a bit aloof and distant, Captain Scott Dunham was not merely introduced at a welcome reception, but rather made an effort to greet everyone who wanted to shake his hand. On subsequent days, he would routinely stop to chat with passengers.

Artwork Detail at the Library Artwork Detail at the Library - American Countess.Amercian Queen Steamboat Company

Several pilot house tours were scheduled, open to anyone interested in seeing the “nerve center” of this riverboat. The tours allow passengers to see what’s involved in maneuvering a modern riverboat along the waterway. The boat’s captain and pilot man the pilot house in alternating four-hour shifts around the clock.

Exploring the rivers one small town at a time

american countess

While days at sea may represent an almost equal appeal to cruise passengers as the ports visited, river cruising is mostly about the cities along the way. Much of the actual river travel is done at night. There’s a wealth of shore excursions in the small towns along the river, but there are onboard activities even while the boat is at rest in a port.

American Queen Voyages has a fleet of contracted buses and drivers. The buses mimic each cruise itinerary via highway routes, and they meet at the dock each morning to whisk passengers from the boat to a daily round of complimentary hop on-hop off destinations. Local guides typically join each bus to offer insights about the history and attractions of each locale. Travelers are free to visit as many of the stops as they wish, and spend as much time as they wish at each, and are cautioned about the last run of the bus each day (the boat doesn’t wait for late passengers).

On this particular itinerary, each stop provided something entirely different.

Brandenburg, Kentucky

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Abraham Lincoln Birthplace NHP (@lincolnbirthplacenps)

Named after a local barkeep and landowner rather than the German city of the same name, historic Brandenburg prospered as an early American trade center, and there’s evidence of Native American settlements in the area dating back at least 10,000 years ago.

Here, a four-hour tour highlighting the life of Abraham Lincoln, who hailed from this area, is a prime excursion offered at no charge for cruise passengers. The tour includes a stop at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park, an impressive memorial building set upon park-like grounds with a replica of the Lincoln family’s humble one-room cabin and a natural spring that has been in use for well over a century.

The tour also stopped in Hodgenville to visit the Lincoln Museum, which occupies a prime location on the town square. Here, Lincoln look-alike dressed in period attire recited parts of the Gettysburg Address and explained some of the reasons behind Lincoln’s actions during the Civil War. Those who chose the premium tour in Brandenburg also took a hands-on pottery class at PG Studio Arts Center.

Owensboro, Kentucky

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Green River Distilling Co. (@greenriverdistillingco)

Owensboro is the self-proclaimed “Barbecue Capital of the World,” with a hometown festival scheduled in May that attracts tens of thousands of international visitors to the town of 60,000 people. It’s also sometimes known as Kentucky’s Festival City, with at least six other festivals throughout the year.

During the 19th Century, there were 18 distilleries located in Daviess County, but today only three are left. Cruisers can visit Green River Distillery, the tenth bourbon distillery licensed in Kentucky, for a tour and tasting.

Other stops on the cruise bus route include the Western Kentucky Botanical Gardens with the world’s tallest Sassafras tree (100 feet in height with a trunk that measures 21 feet around), the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, Smothers Park, the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and St. Stephen Cathedral.

Henderson, Kentucky

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hometown Roots (@hometownrootsky)

Here, the premium experience for $129 per person was a bourbon tasting paired with small dishes of Southern comfort food at Hometown Roots. Started by Henderson-born Casey Todd, the restaurant focuses on local ingredients and has a grow wall filled with Bibb lettuce.

Drinks included an old fashioned cocktail made with Buffalo Trace and three other distinctive brands of Kentucky bourbon, all accompanied by plates from chef Shawna Harrington: deep-fried Brussels sprouts, a deviled egg duo including one deep-fried version, pimento cheese fritters, and cornbread served in a miniature cast iron skillet and topped with a whopping scoop of soft butter.

Paducah, Kentucky

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @thehotelmetropolitan

The premium experience in Paducah, “Check-In Along the Chitlin Trail,” is $99 per person. That check-in is at a large frame house with a sign above the front porch that simply reads Hotel Metropolitan . Except that it stands almost alone on its block today, there wouldn’t be much to distinguish it from other homes in town. But in the early 1900s, this house was a well-known safe haven for Black musicians, performers, and travelers who were denied room and board at many places in the South during segregation and Jim Crow. The Metropolitan Hotel was one of the sites listed in The Green Book, a travel guide published between 1936 and 1967. It identified businesses that would accept Black customers.

B.B. King, Billie Holiday, Ike and Tina Turner, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Thurgood Marshall, Ella Fitzgerald, the Harlem Globetrotters, and many others have found sanctuary in this simple home-like setting with 11 bedrooms. Today, it has been totally restored, and is run by a non-profit organization that seeks to preserve the history of the hotel and its operator.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by National Quilt Museum (@nationalquiltmuseum)

Other noteworthy stops in Paducah include the National Quilt Museum and, depending on the day and time of year, the Saturday Farmers Market. Silent Brigade Distillery, the Lloyd Tilghman house, Paducah Railroad Museum, and the River Discovery Center are other options along the bus route. Walking back, be sure to catch the stunning murals by Robert Dafford that capture Paducah’s rich history.

Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Old St Vincent's Catholic Church

Photo: photo.eccles / Shutterstock

After departing Paducah late in the afternoon, we followed the Ohio River to where it flows into the Mississippi River near Cairo, Illinois. Turning to follow the mighty Mississippi’s course upstream at that point, we were scheduled to arrive at historic Cape Girardeau at approximately 8 AM.

Cape Girardeau is said to have been one of Mark Twain’s favorite towns, and I was immediately enthralled by its quaint appeal. Even though it was Sunday and many of the shops and businesses were closed, Cape Girardeau exudes charm. The Mississippi River Tales Mural stretches along the interior of the flood wall, while on the river side, a “Welcome to Cape Girardeau, Missouri” mural leaves no doubt about where you are.

We spent most of our allotted shore time at the Crisp Museum on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University, first watching a film about the Mississippian era, then strolling through the museum’s historical art and archeological collections. Some pieces are estimated to be 15,000 years old.

Other stops in Cape Girardeau include Old St. Vincent’s Church, built in 1850s English Gothic Revival Style; the Cape River Heritage Center; and Capaha Rose Garden — Cape Girardeau was once known as the “City of Roses.”

St. Louis, Missouri

City of St. Louis skyline. Image of St. Louis downtown at twilight.

Photo: f11photo / Shutterstock

Our final day of cruising the Mississippi brought us to St. Louis, with a scheduled arrival time of noon. The 600-feet-tall Arch became visible before we reached the city. Gateway Arch National Park and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, known as the Old Cathedral, are just steps away from the riverboat docking point. Again, the fleet of buses awaited us at the pier and whisked us to the sights we chose to visit in St. Louis. My husband chose to hop off at the Arch, to watch the award-winning film of its construction and walk around Gateway Park. I rode on through the city, to enjoy the beauty of the celebrated mosaics at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.

There are so many things to do in St. Louis that a few hours can in no way do the city justice, but the options available to riverboat cruisers are great ones, including the National Blues Museum, the Economy Museum, and the Missouri History Museum.

American Queen Voyages fleet

Ocean discoverer, ocean victory, ocean navigator, american empress, ocean voyager, american countess, american duchess, american queen, review of american queen voyages.

Originally founded under the name "Great American Steamboat Company", in April 2012 this business enterprise started under the cruise brand AQSC (American Queen Steamboat Company LLC). For 10 years (between 2011-2021), the company was branded as AQSC. In September 2021, the brand was changed to "American Queen Voyages"/AQV, as well as the brand's logo (adding the trademarked "Discovery Runs Deep" tagline).

IMPORTANT : On February 20, 2024, (at 5 pm Indiana time/12:00 UTC) American Queen Steamboat Company LLC officially ceased operations.

  • In an internal letter, all employees and crew were notified that their contracts were permanently terminated, citing "unfortunate business circumstances and an inability to obtain sufficient capital at a commercially reasonable rate to continue operations".
  • All scheduled AQV sailings were canceled.
  • AQV's message stated: "American Queen Voyages has made the difficult decision to shut down and all future cruises have been canceled. Guests and customers should expect to be fully refunded for canceled cruises".
  • On February 22, 2024, in a Texas court, AQV voluntarily filed a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and proposed as a potential auction date (March 28th) for its assets, with March 24th set as a deadline for bidding. In the filing, AQV blamed the COVID crisis' impact on its business, followed by the government-imposed travel restrictions and the failure to sell the business in 2023.
  • The fleet's layup costs alone were reportedly US$300,000 per week.
  • As AQV's main Creditors (companies with unsecured claims) were listed Seatran Marine ($3,996M), Pleasant Holidays ($0,944M), Easton Coach Company ($0,805M), Intercruises Shoreside and Port Services ($0,792M), US Postal Service ($0,744M), Bay Ship & Yacht Co ($0,694M), Vacations To Go ($0,57M), Port San Diego ($0,48M), Mittera Group ($0,451M), Harbor Fuels ($0,437M), American Express ($0,4M), Toast Inc ($0,375M), North River Shipyard ($0,366M), University of Georgia ($0,356M), Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska ($0,34M), SunStone Ships ($0,334M), FMC Globalsat Inc ($0,331M), Riverview Tug Service ($0,328M).

In January, AQV canceled all scheduled February voyages (with a planned restart of operations in March), and all major travel agencies stopped offering AQV cruises.

On February 21, 2024, Hornblower Group (AQSC's parent company) announced an agreement with its main investor Strategic Value Partners LLC (2001-founded investment company/SVP) to acquire a majority ownership of Hornblower and provide investments in the Group's cruise shipping business. A minority stake in Hornblower remains in Crestview Partners (2004-founded, NYC-based private equity firm).

As of 2024, SVP manages US$16+ billion of capital.

By the deal, Crestview Partners became the sole owner of the "Journey Beyond" (Hornblower-owned Australian travel group) and Hornblower Group received US$121 million in financing from its principal investors (SVP and Crestview), which reduced Hornblower's debt by ~US$720M.

As to the future of AQSC/AQV, Hornblower's cruise shipping division (American Queen Voyages) will be sold or closed down due to AQV's underperformance.

AQV company

In the new brand, the "American Queen Steamboat Company" merged the brand "Victory Cruise Lines" and added two new sea regions (Alaska and Central America/Yucatan Mexico).

Following the rebranding, the company trademarked the following names for its subdivisions (by destination):

  • "American Queen Voyages RIVER " (USA)
  • "American Queen Voyages EXPEDITION " (Alaska, Central America)
  • "American Queen Voyages LAKES & OCEAN " ( Great Lakes , Pacific Northwest, Canada, New England)
  • Note: "American Queen Steamboat Company" and "Victory Cruise Lines" are still trademarked.

AQV company's current President is Cindy D’Aoust (former CLIA President & CEO) while Isis Ruiz is the CCO (Chief Commercial Officer). Since 2022, AQV's riverboat fleet's VP of Marine Operations is Captain Jethro Beck (former employee of Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , HAL-Holland America Line , Seabourn , Princess , P&O Australia , Shell Oil Co, Global Marine Group).

Since May 2022, AQV's Acting President is David Giersdorf (contracted for 18 months), who reports directly to Kevin Rabbitt (Hornblower Group's CEO). David Giersdorf works with Adam Peakes (Hornblower Group's Executive VP & CFO). AQV's VP of Finance and Accounting is Mostafa Beshir (previously employed by AOV-Atlas Ocean Voyages as Senior Director of Finance).

In 2022-Q4/2023-Q1, AQV's leadership team joined John Kingston (VP of Human resources), Angela Composto (VP of Marketing, previously employed by Ritz-Carlton Yachts, Crystal and Silversea), Alex Dormoi (PMO/Project Management Officer, previously employed by Anew Recruit and Alpha Plus Transportation).

AQV's Expedition brand was officially inaugurated on March 7, 2022, with Ocean Victory departing from Vancouver BC Canada . The special ceremony was attended by John Waggoner (AQV's Founder, Chairman and CEO), Kathy DeLisser (AQV's Canada VP), Ceres (AQV's Canada Terminals), Tom Corsie (Vancouver Fraser Port Authority's Real Estate VP).

In June 2023 AQV announced its plans to concentrate on river cruises resulting in a series of fleet deployment changes/schedule updates for the period 2024-2025. As part of this strategic shift, AQV canceled the Great Lakes 2024 program and announced its plans to sell the ships Ocean Navigator and Ocean Voyager .

AQSC company history and changes

AQV-American Queen Voyages (aqvoyages.com) fka AQSC-American Queen Steamboat Company (americanqueensteamboatcompany.com) is a 2011-founded USA passenger shipping company and cruise travel brand headquartered in New Albany (Indiana USA). In 2018, the company's headquarters were moved to New Albany IN from Memphis Tennessee . AQSC/AQV and Victory Cruise Lines are owned by Hornblower Group Inc (1980-founded by Terry MacRae/current CEO) via its subsidiary Hornblower Cruises and Events (1974-founded, San Francisco -headquartered). The shipowner is part of HMS Global Maritime (1994-founded as Hornblower Marine Services). Part of the corporation are also HMS Ferries, Seaward Services (ship repairs/maintenance/management) and HMS Consulting (maritime business development, risk management, technical services).

Hornblower also owns "Niagara Falls Cruises" (Niagara Falls Gorge Boat Tour Company, via "Hornblower Canada Co"), and (via Hornblower USA Co) also owns the ferry companies/brands "Alcatraz Cruises" (Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay), "Statue Cruises" (NYC, between Liberty Island and Ellis Island), "Hornblower New York Cruises" (sightseeing yachts on NYC's East River and Hudson River) and "NYC Ferry" (on East River, between Lower and Midtown Manhattan).

In September 2020, Hornblower acquired SEA-Shore Excursions of America (2011-founded tour company, based in Easton, Pennsylvania, that specializes in exclusive cruise extension land tour packages. SEA was founded to serve exclusively AQSC and Victory Cruise Lines.

AQSC-American Queen Voyages

The AQV brand is affiliated with the corporation "HMS Global Maritime Inc" - Florida/ Fort Lauderdale -based company managing its marine operations.

In 2012, with PS American Queen AQSC resurrected the overnight Mississippi River cruise operations - a US travel service that was almost dead since 2008. SInce 2019, AQSC owns the company Victory Cruise Lines , which fleet is listed at CruiseMapper as part of AQSC.

Currently, the company is led by Ted Sykes. He previously worked in leadership and executive roles at Viking , Vantage, Grand Circle Travel , and Saga UK .

In 2023, AQV's finance team joined Lissette Balbiers (as Senior VP of Finance & Accounting/previously employed by iAero Airways as CFO), Susan Anderson (as Finance Director and Financial Controller/previously employed by Hornblower Cruises as Assistant Financial Controller) and Frits van der Werff (as Senior VP of Guest Experiences/hotel operations, previously employed by NCL-Norwegian , MSC , HAL-Holland America, St Regis Hotels & Resorts/Marriott International, Westgate Resorts).

This genuine USA cruise company employs resident experts who narrate the history of all towns visited along the itinerary routes. Onboard bicycles are also at hand, allowing passengers to enjoy biking along the river and through ports the riverboats call at.

All owned by AQSC/AQV ships are stern paddlewheelers designed as the British Victorian era's steam-powered riverboats. Their interior decorations are marked by rich upholstery, ornate chandeliers, custom-made furniture of polished wood and with brass ornaments.

AQV's boats offer modern hotel amenities, such as Wi-Fi in all public spaces, gourmet cuisine, ticket price-inclusive land tours/shore excursions. Still, they aim to evoke the "old timer's" memories of the 19th-century paddlewheel steamships. The riverboats are fitted with an original design steam plant. The steam engine drives a stern paddlewheel to propel the large vessel through water.

In September 2022, AQV partnered with the National Museum of the Great Lakes (Toledo Maritime Center on Maumee River, Toledo OH) to offer Lakelorian guided voyages starting May 2023. On two Toronto-homeported boats (Ocean Voyager, Ocean Navigator), each sailing features a permanent Lakelorian-licensed tour guide. The Lakelorians conduct onboard lectures and discussions (held in the ship's Compass Lounge or Seascape Tavern) themed on the visited city and also answer questions throughout the AQV cruise.

In September 2016, the company announced a fleet expansion with a newbuild ( American Duchess ) scheduled for launch in July 2017. However, due to Mississippi's unseasonably high water levels, the launch was postponed for 6 weeks (to August 13th/christening ceremony). The Maiden Voyage was on August 14th, with prices starting from USD 1500 pp (double-occupancy Interior Suite rates). American Duchess was deployed to the rivers Mississippi and Ohio.

American Duchess cruise ship

For the new riverboat was used the hull of a former casino ship ("Isle of Capri") homeported in Bettendorf (Iowa USA). The casino boat was retrofitted for premium cruises on Mississippi and its tributaries. The riverboat became the USA's first newbuild paddlewheeler. The vessel has capacity 166 passengers and features the American river cruise industry's largest suites (sized up to 550 ft2 / 51 m2) as well as the river travel industry's first-ever Loft Suites (2-level accommodations/on two decks).

American Duchess has a traditional for Mississippi paddle-wheeler design. The itinerary program offers several overnight port stays and shorter roundtrips from homeports Minneapolis-Saint Paul , Nashville , New Orleans and (for the first time) from Chicago (Ottawa, Illinois).

In 2018 was acquired the casino boat "Kanesville Queen" - previously operated by "Harrahs Council Bluffs Casino and Hotel" in Council Bluffs (Iowa USA). The vessel (renamed American Countess ) entered service in 2019, following drydock lengthening at Gulf Island Shipyard (Houma, Louisiana).

Ship stretching included cutting the existing hull in two and adding a 60 ft (18 m) long prefabricated midship section. Nearly 150 workers are currently involved in this project.

Victory Cruise Lines

In mid-November 2018, AQSC announced an agreement to acquire the brand "Victory Cruise Line" and its two chartered (Sunstone Ships-owned) vessels Ocean Voyager/fka Victory I (2001-built) and Ocean Navigator/fka Victory II (2004-built). Transaction terms were not disclosed. The acquisition deal was closed in mid-January 2019.

To the AQSC fleet were also added Ocean Victory (2021) and Ocean Discoverer (2023). Both are Sunstone-owned newbuilds (operated under charter) and deployed seasonally in Alaska.

These four vessels are in a separate fleet (Victory Cruise Line) and operated under the "American Queen Voyages EXPEDITION" brand.

For season 2019 (May through October) were scheduled 10-day Great Lakes voyages  operated with all-inclusive deals. Victory 1 was homeported in Montreal and Detroit MI , with route ports Quebec City , Kingston, Toronto (with crossing Welland Canal between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie), Port Colborne (gateway to Niagara Falls) and Cleveland . Victory 2 was homeported in Toronto and Chicago , with route ports Port Colborne, Cleveland, Detroit, Lake Huron (scenic cruising), Little Current (Manitoulin Island) , Soo Locks (connecting Lake Superior with Great Lakes). Sault Ste Marie , Mackinac Island , Lake Michigan.

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Due to the COVID pandemic, AQSC suspended its entire fleet's passenger shipping operations (all riverboats) canceling all voyages with pre-scheduled departures in the period March 14, 2020, through May 2021. Fleet operations resumed on the following dates in 2021 (by ship).

  • American Duchess (May 3 from Louisville)
  • American Empress (May 4 from Clarkston)
  • American Countess (May 14 from Memphis)
  • American Queen (August 9 from New Orleans)
  • (Victory Cruise Lines ships) Victory I and Victory II (May 1)
  • Note: Under CERTS (Coronavirus Economic Relief for Transportation Services Act), in August 2021 the company received USD 64 million (CAD 80,67M / AUD 87,31M / EUR 54,23M) grant from the USA's government. The CERTS provides grants to eligible (USA-based and all American-crewed) passenger transportation companies (motorcoach, school bus, shipping, pilotage) that have experienced 25% or more annual revenue losses due to the COVID crisis.

Previously, passenger shipping operations were planned to resume on August 2 (American Empress), August 8 (American Countess, American Queen) and August 16 (American Duchess). All affected bookings received a full refund (100% cash) or 125% refund as FCC (future cruise credit) with rebooking. Any booking may move to another departure date in 2020 and their current cancellation penalty applies to the new departure date. The new booking must be of equal or greater value and the customer is responsible for any increase in fare. AQSC covers flight change fees for all immediately rebooking customers.

The AQSC-owned company "Victory Cruise Lines" also suspended passenger shipping operations. The Victory 1 ship cruises were initially canceled through June 30, 2020 (planned to resume on July 5), while the Victory 2 ship (Ocean Navigator) cruises scheduled for 2020 were all canceled. In late-May, AQSC also canceled the entire 2020 program of Victory 1. Victory Cruise Line's suspension was due to Canadia's travel restrictions. All affected bookings received a full monetary refund (100%) or 125% refund as FCC with rebooking.

Itinerary of American Queen Voyages

AQV operates unique paddlewheel-boat voyages along the USA's rivers Ohio, Tennessee, Columbia, Cumberland, Snake, Mississippi. The vessels are all traditional-designed American stern-paddlewheelers featuring luxurious and spacious staterooms, top-quality service, authentic onboard and ashore experiences themed on geography, history, culture, music, cuisine.

NOTE : Since 2021, the brand "American Queen Voyages"/AQV groups the travel brands "American Queen Steamboat Company" (AQSC) and "Victory Cruise Lines" (VCL). Both companies are owned by Hornblower Group Inc (1980-founded) via its subsidiary Hornblower Cruises and Events (1974-founded).

Memphis TN is an important homeport for AQV. American Queen (fleet's most famous ship) docks there regularly - at the city attraction Beale Street Landing. In April 2014, a second boat (American Empress) joined the fleet after a major refurbishment. The vessel formerly sailed under the name "Empress of the North" - another famous American steamboat. With American Empress, in 2014 the company introduced its Pacific Northwest program.

AQSC/AQV owns and operates four (for now) paddle-wheeler riverboats sailing on some of the biggest rivers in the USA.

  • American Duchess (2017-built)
  • American Empress (2004-built/2013-acquired) on Snake and Columbia (Pacific Northwest)
  • American Queen (1995-built/2011-acquired) on Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee.
  • American Countess (1995-built as "Kanesville Queen" casino boat/2018-acquired) on Mississippi River

Into the subsidiary Victory Cruise Line merged the new brands "American Queen Voyages EXPEDITION" (Alaska, Central America) and "American Queen Voyages LAKES & OCEAN"). The fleet currently includes two pairs of sisterships - Ocean Voyager (fka Victory 1) and Ocean-Navigator (fka Victory 2) , as well as the chartered from SunStone Ships Inc (USA-based shipowner) newbuilds Ocean Victory (2021) and Ocean Discoverer (2023).

The following AQV cruise itinerary map shows the company's destinations and all itineraries as rivers and ports of call. The company's main departure ports/homeports are with capital letters and bolded. These are Minneapolis-St Paul (Minnesota) , Chicago (Illinois) , St Louis (Missouri) , Nashville (Tennessee) , Memphis (Tennessee) and New Orleans (Louisiana) .

Special Edition Voyages ( theme cruises ) are regularly scheduled annually by AQV and are themed on "Memorial Day", "July 4th" (Star-Spangled, Salute to Veterans), "Thanksgiving", "Christmas and New Year" (Home for the Holidays, Creole Christmas, Country Christmas, New Year"s Celebration), "History and Culture" (Art of Discovery, Civil War), music (American Music Festival, Star-Spangled Spectacular, The Rhythm of the Rivers, Big Band, A Music of the 1950"s-60"s), food and wine (Culinary and Cocktails, Bourbon - An American Spirit, Cajun-Creole Culinary Experience, American Culinary Experience), sports (The Kentucky Derby, American River Golf Classic), other (Past Guest Reunion).

AQV cruise itineraries 2023 (Lakes & Ocean)

Due to "unprecedented demand" for 2022 voyages, in mid-February 2021 AQSC and Victory Cruise Lines announced the brands' 2023 ship deployment and itineraries. The season's highlight is the introduction of the chartered ship Ocean Discoverer .

American Queen (on Lower Mississippi) has scheduled for 2023 a total of 28 departures on itineraries between Memphis and New Orleans. American Duchess (on Ohio River) has scheduled for 2023 a total of 6 itineraries between Louisville KY and Pittsburgh PA .

American Empress (Pacific Northwest USA/March 23 thru November 26, 2023) operates 9-day itineraries between Portland OR and Spokane WA ( Vancouver WA and Clarkston WA ).

Ocean Discoverer's Maiden Voyage (May 12, 2023) is planned as a repositioning cruise from Puerto Caldera (Puntarenas, Costa Rica) to San Diego CA . The inaugural 2023 season is based on 11-12-day Alaskan itineraries Sitka AK - Vancouver BC and Sitka- Seattle . Ocean Victory's Alaska 2023 program (between Vancouver BC and Sitka AK) also offers seasonal relocation cruises between Puntarenas and San Diego.

The sisterships Ocean Voyager/ex Victory 1 and Ocean Navigator/ex Victory 2 have scheduled for 2023 itineraries (11- to 16-days long) leaving from homeports Chicago, Toronto, Detroit, Montreal. The itinerary's call ports include Marquette, Mackinaw Island, Sault-Ste Marie (Soo Locks passing), Savannah, Charleston, Fernandina Beach FL. Ocean Navigator also operates in the Western Caribbean (Yucatan Mexico) with roundtrips out of Cozumel .

In 2023 is scheduled the introduction of AQV's new 23-day itinerary "Grand Ohio and Upper Mississippi Rivers" (ship American Countess) departing from Minneapolis on July 24th and ending in Pittsburgh. The reverse 23-day itinerary leaves from Pittsburgh on August 14th. The new route features 1772 mi/2850 km of river cruising and visiting 19x port cities in 10x states - MN (Red Wing), WI (La Crosse), IA (Dubuque, Bettendorf, Burlington), MO (Hannibal, St Louis, Kimmswick, Cape Girardeau), KY (Paducah, Henderson, Owensboro, Brandenburg, Louisville), IN (Madison), OH (Cincinnati), KY (Maysville), WV (Point Pleasant), GA (Marietta).

AQV cruise itineraries 2024

In mid-December 2021 were announced details on AQV's 2024 program, marking it the company's ever furthest (3 years in advance) season open for booking.

"American Queen Voyages River" 2024 season is on the Lower Mississippi (between New Orleans and Memphis) and based on the boats Duchess, Countess and Queen. The three boats also sail on the rivers Ohio and Cumberland.

"American Queen Voyages Lakes and Ocean" itineraries are along the USA-Canada coasts, America's Great Lakes , Yucatan Mexico. Signature cruisetours visit Niagara Falls, Chicago, Martha's Vineyard Island , Bar Harbor, Newport.

"American Queen Voyages Expedition" 2024 Alaskan season (company's third and brand's second) is based on two newbuilds - Ocean Victory (2021) and Ocean Discoverer (2023).

Cruise Ship Fire Destroys MV Ocean Countess

LM&W

Written by LM&W Lipcon, Margulies & Winkleman, P.A. is made up of attorneys who are nationally recognized industry leaders in the field of maritime and admiralty law. Our team of cruise lawyers has well over two centuries of combined experience, has successfully handled over 3,000 cases, and has recovered over 300 million dollars in damages for our clients. Several of our attorneys have even been selected to “Best Lawyers” ® by US News & World Report every year as far back as 2016.

Life saver

Several fires have followed the Triumph accident, and now this week, our maritime attorneys have learned about a serious incident involving a Majestic International vessel. The MV Ocean Countess, formerly the Cunard Countess, caught fire this weekend for unknown reasons near Greece. Ironically, the ship had been in dry doc k for quite some time and was supposed to return to service next year, but it’s highly unlikely that the ship will set sail again anytime soon  – if ever.

Footage of the blaze was captured, showing the ship becoming engulfed in smoke and flames.  At 17, 593 gross tons, the Ocean Countess isn’t one of the larger ships in service, but it is still big enough to make quite an impression on the high seas and large enough that the spread of a fire can be devastating to those onboard.

The damage to the vessel was pretty extensive, though luckily, no one was injured. The Ocean Countess has quite a history, and though it’s unlikely the ship will be salvaged, no one will forget the impact it has made in the cruising industry. The vessel was the first cruise ship to sail from the cruise terminal in Liverpool, England.

Only able to carry 800 passengers, the vessel is by no means a modern ship, but will be missed by all who have sailed on it.  Could this disaster be more than just a standard cruise accident? Could it be a metaphor for what’s currently going on in the industry?

These days, you don’t see very many ships being built that accommodate for any less than 2,000 passengers. Some of the ultra luxury lines like Silversea and Oceania have small vessels in circulation, but they are geared toward a very select crowd and are known to engage in cruise vacations that are more for exploring remote locations that require small vessels to pass through. When we think of the newest ships on the market, we think of Royal Caribbean’s Allure and Oasis vessels or the new Norwegian Getaway. The new ships are extremely large and capable of transporting over 3,500 people. That’s the trend we are now seeing in the industry and it doesn’t look as though it will be changing anytime soon.

Gone are the days of small passenger cruise ships, so the fire is a bit metaphorical for what’s popular and in-demand for cruise companies these days. Who knows, maybe Majestic International will roll out with a new, bigger, better version of the Ocean Countess, but it’s more likely these small ships will be overtaken by their mega ship counterparts.

But just because a ship is bigger doesn’t mean it’s better. Large ships can malfunction just like small ones, and accidents can be all the more devastating because there is more mass and a greater number of people onboard. A fire in a large ship may spread faster and small equipment issues may not be as easily detected because of the sheer size of a vessel. It will take a lot more time to inspect a mega ship than a small one, that’s for sure.

Despite the recent advancements in maritime safety technology, the newest ships still don’t have full safety coverage, which is just inexcusable. We can only hope that the industry will prioritize safety features above the glitz and the glam.

First look: The cool new paddlewheeler that will take you from New Orleans to Memphis

Gene Sloan

Note: American Queen Voyages ceased operations in February 2024, following financial difficulties stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Booked passengers seeking refunds can request them by filling out a form on the dedicated website American Queen Voyages set up to handle claims.

It's been a big week for the comeback of cruising in North America -- and not just because two of the world's biggest big-ship cruise lines, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises , opened bookings for their first sailings on the continent since the coronavirus pandemic forced the industry to a halt.

This week also saw some of the first sailings by small cruise vessels on U.S. waterways in more than a year, including the first voyage of a new riverboat on the Mississippi River.

The new riverboat, the 245-passenger American Countess, is the latest Mississippi River paddlewheeler from American Queen Steamboat Company -- the company behind the iconic American Queen steamboat. And its arrival is something of a big deal in the world of cruising.

Christened on Sunday in New Orleans , American Countess is the first new cruise vessel of any kind to be christened and go into service in North America since the coronavirus-related cruising shutdown began in early 2020.

ocean countess tour

TPG is one of just a handful of travel outlets getting exclusive access this week to the first sailing of American Countess — a nonrevenue "preview" cruise from New Orleans to Memphis with company executives, their friends and family, and local dignitaries.

As I'm seeing this week, American Countess offers an alluring mix of both traditional and contemporary riverboat design. From the outside, it resembles a classic paddlewheeler of old -- the sort of thing you'd expect to see on the cover of a Mark Twain novel. But on the inside, it's as modern as any newly built hotel on land, with a stylish, contemporary vibe.

Here's a first look at some of the most notable features of the vessel, which will begin its first sailings with paying passengers on Sunday:

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter.

A classic steamboat exterior

ocean countess tour

If you've always dreamed of cruising the Mississippi on a riverboat that (on the outside, at least) evokes the golden age of steamboats, American Countess could be your vessel.

The exterior of the four-deck-high paddlewheeler is a red-and-white, gingerbread trim-festooned confection that would look right at home in an 1800s period piece.

Among the old-timey touches that make the exterior of American Countess a delight for the eyes is its classic (and fully functional) giant red paddlewheel, which churns through the water with a mesmerizing, bump-bump-bump-bump rhythm.

The exterior of the American Countess also is embellished with two large white "booms" at its bow that project forward like giant antennae -- a classic touch of riverboats of old. The booms, which swing from side to side, support long mobile walkways known as stages, which in turn swing down onto land to let passengers off onto the shore.

ocean countess tour

The stages are an old-style way of getting passengers off riverboats that are, notably, not just evocative of a bygone era but also practical for Mississippi River cruising even today. The flexible nature of the stages means American Queen can "dock" just about anywhere it wants along the river. It just needs to find a relatively open area along the shore to tie up.

We saw this sort of flexible docking in action during a stop near White Castle, Louisiana. The American Countess just pulled up the side of the river, in a place where there was no formal dock, to let passengers off.

Modern interiors

ocean countess tour

Despite its exterior, the inside of American Countess is as stylish and modern as anything you'll find in a just-built city hotel.

The main gathering space on the vessel is the Grand Lobby, a soaring bar and lounge area with a classy, contemporary feel. Running for 80 feet along the port side of American Countess, its standout feature is what is essentially a wall of glass offering lounge-goers stunning panoramic views of the passing scenery. Few American river cruise vessels can boast such a spectacular interior space for river-gazing while underway.

ocean countess tour

The Grand Lobby is located at the center of American Countess' main public deck, appropriately called the Main Deck, which also is home to an elegant and contemporary dining space. Called the Grand Dining Room, it's where passengers eat most of their meals.

Also located just off the Grand Lobby is a full-blown theater (called, simply, The Theater) and a small lounge called Perks that offers self-serve coffee beverages, tea, cookies and soft-serve ice cream. Both spaces also are designed in a contemporary style.

Passengers can also enjoy a small library, card room, fitness center and a deck-top lounge area.

Contemporary cabins

ocean countess tour

The American Queen Steamboat Company's best-known vessel, American Queen, is famous for the 19th-century-style opulence of its cabins (think: Victorian-style wooden armoires, four-poster beds and red patterned wallpaper). Staying in a cabin on the vessel is a little like going back in time.

Not so for the American Countess.

Like American Queen Steamboat's last new vessel, American Duchess (unveiled in 2017), American Countess has unmistakably contemporary cabins that match the aforementioned public spaces. You can expect clean-lined sofas and desk areas; queen beds topped with crisp white-on-white duvets; and large, flat-panel televisions mounted on the wall.

Bathrooms in American Countess cabins feature glass-walled showers with sleek chrome Grohe fixtures, white-tile floors and minimalist toilets and sinks. They're also unusually large for cabins on a cruise vessel.

ocean countess tour

In a "keep-things-simple" strategy that was aimed, in part, at making it easy to sell the ship to groups, the line has essentially just put two types of cabins on the vessel. Most of the rooms are balcony cabins that measure either 192 or 226 square feet. Then there are some windowless "inside" cabins that mostly measure 153 square feet.

That's a notable change from American Queen Steamboat's last vessel, American Duchess, which offers a broader array of cabins including some very large suites.

Overall, the rooms are comfortable and inviting -- and they have a lot of wonderful little modern touches. I'm particularly smitten with the electric outlets that are built right into the side tables on each side of the bed. There are three U.S.-style electric outlets and two USB outlets at the top of each side table, which is a dream for people like me who travel with all sorts of gadgets. Four more outlets and two USB outlets are built into the desk across the room.

Each side of the bed also features a perfectly placed light fixture with both a lamp to provide ambient light and a small spotlight that can be directed any-which-way for reading in bed. The latter allows you to lay in bed reading without wayward light bothering someone who is trying to sleep right next to you.

ocean countess tour

The cabins do have one noticeable flaw that could leave someone a bit flustered upon arrival, depending on his or her packing habits: There's relatively limited storage space. There is just one modest-sized closet with a single row for hanging clothes, two drawers and nowhere logical to put your shoes.

If you're thinking about booking a trip on American Countess, be strategic about what you pack -- or assume you'll keep some of your clothes and other items in your suitcase, which you can slide under the bed.

Lively entertainment

ocean countess tour

American Countess is notably smaller and more intimate than American Queen Steamboat's 436-passenger American Queen, which is the world's largest river steamboat. It has just 123 cabins vs. 222 on American Queen. But despite its relatively small size, it offers a lot of entertainment.

A small theater group that includes four performers and a four-person house band sails with American Countess and performs most nights in its theater, with musical medley-type productions that offer everything from classic songs of the South to 1970s music.

In addition, the house band entertains passengers most nights in the Grand Lobby.

The vessel's theater also welcomes special guest performers such as Steve Spracklen, a pianist who often entertains passengers on American Queen Steamboat vessels with ragtime music, weaving in some of the history of the genre as he goes.

Passengers also will find lots of daily activities such as bourbon tastings and talks from the vessel's "riverlorian" -- an onboard river expert who recounts local river lore and history.

On this sailing, well-known Natchez-based chef Regina Charboneau also was on board to host cooking demonstrations.

Comfortable river views

ocean countess tour

One of the great things about American Countess is that it's filled with spaces that use the main attraction of a Mississippi River cruise -- the river itself -- as a focal point.

In addition to having interior spaces such as the Grand Lobby that are built around panoramic views of the river through huge glass windows, the vessel also offers lots of outdoor areas where you can sit and watch the river roll by.

ocean countess tour

The bow of the vessel features particularly wonderful outdoor deck spaces that are lined with rocking chairs where passengers can lounge for hours, watching the activity of the river.

There's also a large deck-top lounge area with comfortable outdoor furniture that can be covered or uncovered, depending on the weather.

Included tours

ocean countess tour

As is typical for all American Queen Steamboat vessels, American Countess offers tours to passengers in every destination it visits.

On this sailing, that included a tour of Nottoway. Due to high water levels on the Mississippi River this week, American Countess wasn't able to tie up right there, but it was able to get close. Passengers were then taken to the site in custom-built American Queen Steamboat motorcoaches.

A signature feature of the line is that its motorcoaches -- each specially designed with extra glass up top for viewing -- follow its vessels up and down the Mississippi and other rivers for daily use during touring.

American Queen Steamboat is particularly known for included-in-the-fare "hop-on, hop-off" tours in the river towns its vessels visit that allow passengers to explore at their own pace while stopping at multiple attractions. For now, as part of the anti-coronavirus measures American Queen Steamboat is implementing, such touring has been scaled back in the interest of safety. But the line is offering alternative included-in-price tours that are more closely managed.

During these new tours, passengers travel together as a group by motorcoach for sightseeing with a more limited number of stops.

American Queen Steamboat executives have said the new touring system is likely just a temporary measure until it implements a new COVID-19 vaccine requirement for passengers in July.

American Countess this year initially will sail week-long voyages between New Orleans and Memphis with stops in places such as Natchez and Vicksburg, Mississippi, and St. Francisville, Louisiana. But the vessel also will operate on the upper part of the Mississippi River and also on the Ohio and Cumberland rivers later in the year.

The itineraries will take the vessel as far north as Red Wing, Minnesota, and as far east as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

All American Countess itineraries include a pre-cruise overnight stay at a hotel in the departure port.

Bottom line

American Countess is an enticing option for travelers hoping to cruise on the Mississippi River or one of its tributaries. While it has a classic Mississippi paddlewheeler look on its outside -- something that, to many people, just seems right for Mississippi River cruise vessels -- its interior isn't a throwback to the 19th century.

If you cruise on American Countess, you'll find interior public rooms including lounges and dining venues that are as modern and stylish as any new-build boutique hotel, with cabins to match.

Just keep in mind that American Countess, like most river cruise vessels, is a relatively small vessel when compared to the typical ocean cruise ship. You'll find fewer restaurants, lounges and other venues on American Countess than you'll find on the typical ocean ship. You'll also find far fewer crowds. As is typical for small cruise vessels, American Countess has much more of the feel of a boutique hotel than a large resort.

Moscow Metro

Introduction of moscow subway system (metro).

Richly Decorated Central Hall of Novokuznetskaya Station

Nowadays the Moscow Metro has 12 lines, light subway and monorail. All stations are unique and beautiful in their own way. Unfortunately, in order to visit them all, you need to spend many days. I invite guests to visit the ones that have the greatest cultural and historical interest from my point of view. Among them are the Revolution Square, Arbatskaya, Kievskaya (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line № 3); Kievskaya, Belarusskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya (the Ring line number 5). Let us dwell a bit on each.

Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line

Subway station "revolution square".

Sign “Ploshchad Revolyutsii” in Archway with Bronze Figures

Most recently - in the year 2008-2010 – the Eastern lobby was renovated. Because of the terrorist attacks in the Moscow subway that took place several hours before the planned opening of the East lobby after renovation, the solemn part of the event was canceled.

Subway station Arbatskaya

Subway Arbatskaya is located on the same subway line as the station "Revolution Square." It was founded in 1953. It received the name in honor of the Arbat Street. It has one ground lobby (Western). Initially, the lobby was in a separate building, but the new building of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense started, the lobby appeared to be in its atrium. The old exits were bricked up; a new entrance was built into the building of General Staff of the street Vozdvizhenka. There is a huge frame with a missing portrait in the ground lobby - until mid-1950 there was a portrait of Stalin. According to some reports, it survived, but closed with plaster.

The lobby was restored and partially reconstructed in 2007-2008.

The depth of the station is 41 meters.

Pylons are finished with red marble at the bottom, decorated with bouquets of flowers made from ceramics. The floor is laid out with gray granite. The walls lined with glazed ceramic tiles, white top and black bottom. The station hall is illuminated by massive bronze chandeliers in the form of rings.

Subway station Kievskaya

There are several subway stations "Kievskaya" in Moscow, located on different branches. This name is quite popular. It comes from the capital of Ukraine - one of Russia's nearest neighbors - the city of Kiev. The name is fully consistent with the idea of the subway station. The interior the station devoted to Soviet Ukraine and the reunification of Ukraine and Russia. The station is decorated with a large number of paintings .Twenty four murals depicting workers of Soviet Ukraine are placed on the arch above the pylons. The wall from the side of platform also contains frescos, mainly with images of fantastic plants. Pylons are decorated with light marble and additionally decorated with colorful ceramic cornice. The butt of the station has a large mosaic, depicting festivities to celebrate the 300 anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia.

Opened in 1953, this subway station for a long time was the final (1953-2003).

The station has one lobby, combined with the station ring line and located in the building of the Kievskaya railway station. The diameter of the central hall station is 9.5 m, the diameter of side one is 8.5 m. The depth of the station is 38 meters.

= Ring Line Subway =

It opened in 1954. The station received its name after the Kiev station, and locked the Ring line. During the construction of the station many projects were proposed, but the victory in the competition won the Kiev architects who made the construction of the station. It is the only station of the Ring Line which is not located in the Central Administrative District of Moscow.

The station has a pylon structure. Eighteen pylons are decorated with mosaic panels of glazes, decorated on the theme of Ukrainian history and friendship between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, which started in the mid-17 century.

On the front wall of the central hall of the station a large panel with molding in the form of flags and a mosaic portrait of Lenin in the center are located. There are lines of the Soviet national anthem around the portrait, and under the portrait - the words of Lenin. One of the ways out of the station was designed by French architects modeled on the Paris Subway in 2006.

At one of the mosaics – “The Struggle for Soviet power in Ukraine "- modern passengers observe a mobile phone and PDA in the hand of one of the guerrillas, and on his knees - a laptop. In fact, he uses a field telephone, which was really a heavy thing (guerrillas holds it in two hands), and thing that people see a laptop is the lid of a box with a telephone. However, these phones have begun to produce only in the second half of the 20-ies of XX century. We must assume that the mosaic depicts a foreign field telephone transmitter.

Subway station Belorusskaya

The founded of the station was in 1952. It received the name after the Belarusian railway station nearby. The station has two ground-based lobbies. The Western one goes to Tverskaya  Zastava. It is decorated with beautiful carvings. The Eastern one leads to Butyrskiy shaft and Forest Street. The Eastern lobby is known for its majolica panels.

The station Belorusskaya is located at a depth of 42.5 m below ground. The diameter of the central hall is 9.5 meters.

Pylons are faced with light marble. The walls lined with white ceramic tiles, the floor is covered with ceramic tiles, gray, white and red colors. Lamps placed on pylons, in the form of vases made of glass and marble. The theme of decoration is economy and culture of Belarus. Decorative pattern on the floor repeats the theme of traditional Belarusian embroidery. Decorations of the ceiling consist of stucco decorations and 12 mosaic panels depicting the life of the Belarusian people.

Subway station Novoslobodskaya

Built in 1952, Subway station Novoslobodskaya got its name from the eponymous street:  the station is located at the very beginning of it.

Novoslobodskaya is pylon station of deep foundation (its depth is 40 m) with three arches.

Exit to the street is through the ground lobby with column portico, located on Novoslobodskaya Street lined with gray marble. Pylons of the underground station are faced with marble from the Urals. Thirty two spectacularly illuminated stained-glasses, placed inside the pylon and bordered by steel and gilt brass are splendid decoration of the station. A remarkable mosaic "World Peace" is located at the end of the central hall. The picture depicts a happy mother with a baby in her arms; it was the face of Stalin at the picture: the child gave a hand to him. But in times of Khrushchev the face of the former leader of USSR was removed from the panel. The walls are lined with bright marble; floor is covered with white and black granite slabs, placed in a checkerboard pattern.

Subway station Komsomolskaya

The station was built in 1952 and named in honor of the Komsomolskaya Square, which is situated nearby.

This subway station is the station of the deep bedding. Its depth is 37 meters. The station has column and three- arched design. Cast iron decoration is used in the construction, monolithic slab used as a tray for a collapsible finishing. The length of the boarding hall is 190 meters; width of it is 10 meters. There are 68 octagonal columns at station.

The main theme of the interior of the station is the fighting of the Russian people for their independence. The ceiling is decorated with eight station mosaic mural made from glazes and precious stones. Six of them represent the Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov, the Soviet soldiers and officers at the walls of the Reichstag.

Two other panels, depicting Stalin ("Victory Parade" and "Presentation of the Guards Banner"), were replaced after the dethronement of Stalin's personality cult in 1963. New panels depict Lenin's speech in front of the Red Guards and the Motherland on the background of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower.

The yellow ceiling is decorated with mosaic and moldings. The hall is illuminated by massive chandeliers hanging between the panels; platforms are illuminated with smaller chandeliers. The columns are decorated with marble capitals and trimmed with light marble, as well as the wall station. The floor is laid with pink granite. There is a bust of Lenin at the end of the hall. At the opposite end of the escalator is a large Florentine mosaic of the Order of Victory with red banners on the background. The ground lobby of the station is decorated with bas-reliefs.

In conclusion...

Each of the stations of the Moscow subway is attractive and interesting in its own way. Each has its own long and fascinating history and is beautifully decorated. The Moscow subway is a whole world, which can be talking about for hours. I suggest you short - no more than one hour and a half - and a fascinating journey through the world of the Moscow subway. The pleasure is guaranteed!

Riverboat Tours Make Wheeling a Port of Call

ocean countess tour

The American Countess – the newest paddlewheeler in the American Queen Voyages fleet – was docked at Heritage Port in Wheeling on Monday and Wednesday this week for shore excursions to various sites around town during weeklong trips between Pittsburgh and Louisville, Kentucky. (Photo by Eric Ayres)

WHEELING — People out venturing into downtown Wheeling and enjoying the pleasant weather this week may have caught a glimpse of the massive American Countess at Heritage Port.

The newest paddlewheeler in the American Queen Voyages fleet is a four-deck vessel that was christened in 2020. With 123 staterooms and a crew of just under 100, the majestic boat inevitably causes heads to turn and prompts people to grab their cellphones to snap pictures of the spectacular sight each time it passes down the river or pulls into ports.

Now that warm weather has arrived and is expected to stay, the riverboats have made their way to northern routes. This past week, the American Countess stopped in Wheeling on its way to Pittsburgh on Monday and on its way from the Steel City on another voyage on Wednesday.

American Queen Voyages Tour Manager Judy LaMance of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was helping visitors find points of interest in the Friendly City Wednesday.

Although Wheeling is not always a regular stop on the river tours that pass through the Upper Ohio Valley, it’s one of the prime options for boats on trips that begin or end in Pittsburgh.

“We come here usually in late spring and early fall – two to three times per year,” LaMance said, noting that the tours basically migrate through the seasons by following the pleasant weather. “We do the lower Mississippi until late April, and then we do it again from October until the end of the year. In between we do the Ohio, Illinois and Tennessee, and then we’ll go all the way up to Red Wing, Minnesota, on the Mississippi.”

The specific stops depend on each different river cruise’s itinerary. The ports of call on a typical week-long or nine-day river cruise in this neck of the woods between Pittsburgh and Louisville, Kentucky, may hit Marietta, Ohio; Huntington; Augusta, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Ohio; and Madison, Indiana, with occasionally stops in cities such as Wheeling; Maysville, Kentucky and Point Pleasant.

“We’ll be here for a couple of weeks now and a couple of weeks in August,” LaMance said of the American Countess’ current tours that include the Upper Ohio Valley.

For cruises like the one that stopped in the area this week, a fleet of three tour buses follow the boat – or in many cases, the boat actually follows the buses since the land-based vehicles usually arrive at the destination first, LaMance noted. During stops in Wheeling, the paddle boat docks at Heritage Port, and guests can go ashore, hop on a bus and check out various points of interest in town.

“We go to the Artisan Center, to West Virginia Independence Hall, the Capitol Theatre and Centre Market on our hop-on, hop-off buses,” LaMance said. “And we have a premium tour that goes to the Oglebay museums.”

While riverboat cruising is similar to ocean liner cruising in many ways, the riverboats obviously carry only a couple hundred passengers as opposed to thousands that can be loaded onto today’s mega-ships.

“This is pretty laid back,” LaMance said of the American Countess. “It holds 245.”

Because of the limited size of the river boats, the shore excursions are a primary highlight of river cruising – and most excursions are included in the overall price of the cruise.

“We’re in ports most days,” LaMance said, noting that while cruising onboard, guests can enjoy a number of group activities, visit public areas and check out the ever-changing scenery. They have game shows, trivia contests, bingo, a library, a card room, a coffee shop room, a number of bars (with most drinks included) and on-shore tours every day. “There’s not food 24 hours a day like you see on the big ships.”

But there is plenty of great dining, she noted, as well as on-board entertainment, which is also included. This week, they have a mentalist performing and a show featuring a Mark Twain impersonator. There are also house entertainers and musicians on board.

Vessels in the American Queen Voyages fleet have the classic, historic look of riverboats of the past, but boast modern amenities. They may look old, but most were built in or around the 1990s.

“We have four paddlewheelers that do the rivers – three of them do the Mississippi and the tributaries, and then one does the Columbia and Snake rivers out of Portland, Oregon,” LaMance said. “We also have two boats that do the Great Lakes and coastal tours, and then we have an Alaskan expedition boat.”

The American Countess has some scheduled trips that will pass by the area in the future, but the next scheduled stop in Wheeling is not until August.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Moscow Metro 2019

ocean countess tour

Will it be easy to find my way in the Moscow Metro? It is a question many visitors ask themselves before hitting the streets of the Russian capital. As metro is the main means of transport in Moscow – fast, reliable and safe – having some skills in using it will help make your visit more successful and smooth. On top of this, it is the most beautiful metro in the world !

. There are over 220 stations and 15 lines in the Moscow Metro. It is open from 6 am to 1 am. Trains come very frequently: during the rush hour you won't wait for more than 90 seconds! Distances between stations are quite long – 1,5 to 2 or even 3 kilometers. Metro runs inside the city borders only. To get to the airport you will need to take an onground train - Aeroexpress.

RATES AND TICKETS

Paper ticket A fee is fixed and does not depend on how far you go. There are tickets for a number of trips: 1, 2 or 60 trips; or for a number of days: 1, 3 days or a month. Your trips are recorded on a paper ticket. Ifyou buy a ticket for several trips you can share it with your traveling partner passing it from one to the other at the turnstile.

The cheapest way to travel is buying Troyka card . It is a plastic card you can top up for any amount at the machine or at the ticket office. With it every trip costs 38 RUB in the metro and 21 RUB in a bus. You can get the card in any ticket office. Be prepared to leave a deposit of 50 RUB. You can get it back returning the card to the cashier.

Electrified Tour Update: Over 2,000 Test Drives of the Fisker Ocean

Fisker’s electrified tour showcases the ocean suv, with 2,156 test drives already conducted across 12 cities with final stops in austin, parsippany, dallas, boston, and chicago..

T oday, Fisker provided an update with some interesting details about its Electrified Tour. If you recall, the road show kicked off in February. The Electrified Tour features the all-electric Fisker Ocean, which has been electrifying cities across the nation. We’ve learned that a whopping 2,156 people have test-driven the Fisker Ocean so far on this road tour! This means that Fisker gave approximately 179 test drives at each of the first 12 tour stops, which is pretty phenomenal. Fisker expects to conduct over 2,500 test drives by the end of the tour.

Fisker went on to share another highlight from its new dealer partner located in Atlanta where the road tour recently made a stop. Classic Fisker which hosted the tour stop had an amazing turnout. Apparently, their newly delivered inventory was completely sold out during the tour event. This is a testament to the excitement surrounding the Fisker Ocean. As we’ve said before, once people get behind the wheel of the electric SUV, they fall in love with it much like we have.

What’s next for the Electrified Tour?

The Fisker Electrified Tour is set to cover 17 cities across 11 US states by the time it wraps up. With 12 successful stops already completed and five more to go before it ends on March 31st, the tour shows no signs of slowing down! There’s still plenty of opportunity for individuals to take the wheel of the Fisker Ocean. As Fisker gears up for the next five cities on the itinerary, there’s a lot of chances to experience the Fisker Ocean up close and personal.

Here’s where Fisker is headed next:

  • Austin, TX: March 15th to March 17th ( RSVP )
  • Parsippany, NJ: March 14th to March 17th ( RSVP )
  • Dallas, TX: March 21st to March 24th ( RSVP )
  • Boston, MA: March 21st to March 24th ( RSVP )
  • Chicago, IL: March 28th to March 31st ( RSVP )

Whether you’re in the Lone Star State, near the Big Apple, or the Windy City itself, be sure to mark your calendars and catch the Fisker Ocean in action. You can click one of the RSVP buttons above to reserve your test drive today. We look forward to hearing about the Electrified Tour when it wraps up later this month. Until then, see you on the road !
