Bruges Mini Cruise on P&O Ferries – Review

27th March 2018 By David at HowToCruise 2 Comments

P&O Bruges Mini Cruise

What’s the Mini Cruise from Hull to Bruges like?

It’s a great question.

And one which we wondered about, too.

So what did we do?

We booked a couple of tickets and tried it out.

Hull to Bruges Mini Cruise Review

Because we went in March 2018, just before the Easter holidays began, our tickets cost a mere £43 each.

Yes – £86 for both of us to go on a 2-night cruise .

Now before you get over-excited about that, I must say that it isn’t a cruise in the traditional sense.

And here’s why:

  • It’s on a ferry, not a cruise ship
  • Food isn’t included in the price
  • There’s no dress code

Is the Bruges Mini Cruise Worth the Money?

Yes, I’d say it was definitely worth the £86.

Why, David?

Three main reasons:

  • We enjoyed the comfort of our own cabin with bunk-beds.
  • We were treated to a choice of evening entertainment.
  • The coach travel from the port of Zeebrugge to Bruges (and back, of course) was included.

On the way to Bruges - enjoying wine and chocolate in the ship's bar

Any Negatives?

If you want peace and quiet, you might not get it.

The cheaper off-season price seemed to attract certain groups.

On our cruise were:

  • A group of lads; well-lubricated and high spirited. We reckon it was a stag party.
  • A group of girls; probably a hen-party. They were well behaved, though.
  • A school group. Chattery, but no problems.
  • A couple who evidently were there for the booze – their bad language and manners gave them away.

However, some of these people travelled only one way. You see, it’s not just a mini-cruise, it’s a ferry.

And because it was out of season, the ship wasn’t crowded. Therefore,  it was quite easy to find a quieter spot away from the crowds.

So none of these spoiled our mini-cruise.

But would we go on another?

Yes, we would.

Our Bruges Mini Cruise Video

We made a 4-minute video to give you a guide to what to expect with things such as:

  • Ship facilities
  • Getting back to the ship
  • Entertainment
  • Even where to park in Hull

Even Cheaper

One last thing.  In the end, we actually paid less than £86.

That’s because we went to the P&O Ferries Website through TopCashBack, the cash-back site.

And they gave us 10% cashback.  You can’t turn that down, can you?

If you want to check them out, here’s my refer-a-friend link for TopCashBack .

What About You?

What’s your bargain of the year?

Great to hear that, Dave. March was quite cool so I imagine February would be much colder. Glad you enjoyed it. £250 during school holidays sounds a good deal for such an enjoyable experience.

2 for 1 Mini Cruises

P&O Ferries Bruges mini cruise from £80pp

One of the best mini cruises to Bruges, one of my most favourite cities in the world.

Bruges

Treat yourself to a two-night mini cruise break to the medieval city of Bruges with P&O Ferries.

You'll get to spend the day touring the small city of Bruges in Belgium at your own pace.

👍 Hear about the deals first - click here and follow my Mini Cruise Addict page on Facebook (opens in new window).

At 6.30pm your modern ferry will leave the Port of Hull and sail overnight to Zeebrugge.

Enjoy the entertainment on-board, feast on a delicious dinner, or enjoy a bit of shopping before heading to bed in your own en-suite cabin.

At 8.45am (or 9.30am on weekends) you'll arrive in Zeebrugge where a coach will be waiting to take you to the city centre. Depending on traffic you'll normally be there around half an hour to an hour later.

Enjoy touring Bruges at your own leisure. Meander the shopping streets of this small city, browsing the shops and admiring the beautiful architecture along the way. There are plenty of chocolate shops to tickle your fancy although seek out the artisan shops to taste quality confectionery. Walk around Minnewaterpark and enjoy the tranquil public green space that borders Minnewater Lake. The city boasts a surprising number of museums, historical attractions and religious sites and these are worth a visit too. And don't forget about a canal boat ride or a horse and carriage ride along old cobbled streets.

At 5.30pm the last coach departs Bruges taking the last load of passengers back to the ferry terminal. At 7pm the ship sets sail bound for Hull the following morning.

The dull-but-necessary small print

All deals are subject to availability and can be withdrawn by the operator without prior notice. The lead-in prices (otherwise known as the 'from' prices) are, unless otherwise stated above, based on two adults sharing the cheapest available cabin on the cheapest available date. Typically the best prices are available at the start of any promotion period so the earlier you book the better choice of sailing dates and cabin availability you should have. Mid-week sail dates are likely to be cheaper than weekend sail dates.

can you please tell me can you still cruise from hull

The Bruges route is not currently available from Hull. P&O axed this during the pandemic. I'm hopeful it will return in some shape or form, but time will tell.

Any idea on 241 mini cruises

I don't think these will return until the pandemic is under control. Travel still isn't quite back to normal, so I think it will be a while before we see the cheaper fares return.

when will you be starting your mini cruise to Brugge from Hull we would like to book in December ( club class)

The route was axed as a result of the pandemic. There's no plans to revive it yet, as far as I can see, which is a shame as I loved my Bruges mini cruises. The next best thing now is taking the Eurostar train from the UK to Bruges via Brussels. It's a few hours each way, and you'd need a hotel stay for a night or two to do it justice. It's not the same as travelling by sea though. Hopefully P&O will reconsider the route, or another provider will offer something similar.

P&O still run the Hull to Rotterdam/Amsterdam route though. Amsterdam is everything you'd expect it to be, while Rotterdam's really hip and trendy, with a focus of art and food. Rotterdam's well connected too. Last time, we booked a cruise-and-stay to Rotterdam, but took the metro up to The Hague, spending the afternoon, a night, and the following morning there, with that afternoon in Rotterdam (especially Markthal) before catching the coach back to the port.

When do the 2-1 offers start? Are they in all year round

The next round should be in October. They're normally October through to March.

Can you upgrade to a club cabin on the 2 for 1 offers on Hull to Bruges ? If so what is the cost of the upgrade ? Cheers

The 2 for 1 offer expired at the end of March but is likely to return around October for the Winter season. Indeed, club class cabins are normally available under this deal, obviously at a premium over a standard or Premier class cabin.

I love the 2 for 1 Bruges trip .we go every year. Also amstradam aswell it's cheaper then a hotel . 80 pounds for 2 .it's a give away by p&o ferries

I completely agree! It's incredibly great value, and you get to see some of Europe too.

I havent been on bruges since last year.i going on tuesday national coaches 134 to yepres .flavour of flanders.i think its pride of york

Hope you have a great time!

when will the next 2 for 1 offers be on in 2023 to Bruge please

The Bruges route was axed during the pandemic and has sadly yet to return.

Hi, I'm David and I'm a mini cruise addict. I love the ease and simplicity of exploring Europe from the comfort of a cruise ferry or cruise ship almost as much as I love finding great value deals, including the mother of all deals, the famous '2 for 1' deals.

p and o mini cruise hull to bruges

We arrived at Hull far too early, I would recommend getting there no earlier than 5pm, we couldn't board the boat until then and there is literally nothing to do whilst you wait!

The boat itself was really nice, we had the cheapest kind of cabin which was tiny but served it's purpose!

We had purchased meal vouchers prior to the trip, we upgraded to Langans restaurant on the 1st night, really recommend, lovely food and very attentive service. However we were disappointed with the buffet which we visited on the 2nd night. I would definitely say it is worth the extra £4 to upgrade!

One more thing, make sure you take enough cash for the evening, there is a cash machine on board but it wasn't working when we were there (and it only works when you are in English water anyway).

Bruges was lovely, would recommend going up the tower in the main square (sorry can't remember what it's called). It was 8E or 4E if you are 25 or under. Also it's worth going on a canal trip, lasts about half an hour i think it was about 7E each.

If you are going here soon, enjoy!

' class=

Hi Katemcm. I always use Langans when on board. You do not have to have meal vouchers to use it, but you should book a table as you go on board. The cost of the meal depends on your choise of meal. It can be about the same as the four seasons self servive restaurant, but it's about £10/£15 more PP for us with wine and drinks. You can use CC/DC in all bars, shops and restrurants on board, £5 min spend. You can use your DC with passport to withdraw £s from the purser's office when open. ian480.

How far is it to walk into the Centre from Central Station and do you know if there are any hotels within walking distance, as we are looking to spend 1 night in Bruges.

Thanks for your help in anticipation.

The Zand area is 5 - 10 mins walk too.

If you don't wish to wlak there are regular buses, and plent of taxis.

Most of the Hotels that you will find on the many hotel finig website will be very well situated for all the sites.

Once you have narrowed down your hotel options there are plenty of people on here who will be able to give you the benefit of their experiences of Bruges.

Try the Ibis in Bruges you can get a taxi from the ferry bus drop off, the hotel is about 1 mile away. The hotel is about 300/400 yards from the main square. if what any info about the ferry just get back. ian480.

Thanks for the quick responses!

Do you know whether you can pay for drinks etc on the ferry with Euros as well as Sterling?

Thanks again.

Yes you can pay in Euro's BUT it will cost you more. If your round is more then £5 you can pay with your Debit card. ian480.

I understand from your comments that bruge is a lovely place but was wondering if anyone had anymore tips or ideas about what to do for the day. I like the sound of the canal trip but wondered what else you'd recommend? any nice restaurants, cafes, museums? Ive heard there's a chocolate museum...is it true?

Thanks in advance

do some searching on this site and the internet to find out about restaurants and chocolate.

Bruges isn't a big place. You can wander round and just enjoy yourself.

Thanks for help

Useful thread for me to read as I am going on the 20th- taking my son for a chocolate and moules eating trip!!!

I have been to Bruges before but many years ago - and from what I remember it isn't a huge place.

Hoping to go on a canal trip - haven't planned any further than that!!!!Thanksxx

Hiya i was just wondering if anyone knows if you are allowed to take your own food onboard the ship? i have looked on p&o website but it says nothing except alcohol isnt allowed to be brought onboard. thanks :)

p and o mini cruise hull to bruges

As there is no prohibition in the Terms & Conditions (§11 applying only to alcohol : http://www.poferries.com/eu/terms-and-conditions), I can see reason why passengers couldn't take food on board, even if they couldn't expect to be allowed to eat it in one of the restaurants.

Although strangely someone on 6/2/12 said they weren't allowed to take it on their particular trip: http://www.reviewcentre.com/Mini-Cruises/PandO-Mini-Cruise-Hull-to-Amsterdam-review_1466096

P&O have to make their conditions clear, so if there is nothing in the documentation you have received for your particular trip, there can't be any rule against it. You can always phone them on the information line given here if you think you might not have been given the Terms & Conditions: http://www.onboardpoferries.com/companyinfo/contactpoferries.html

Yes they should make things more clearly really. Never mind i will give them a call and see what they say about it. Would rather spend the extra money we have on our time in bruges rather than wasting it on over priced food onboard . Im not tight when it comes to trips but £96 for brekki/dinner for 2 people seems alot to me . Thanks for your help anyway , much appreciated :)

I should have made it more clear too - I meant that I can see NO reason why passengers shouldn't take food on board! Hopefully you read it like that.

Have a good trip, anyway.

ha ha ha yes i did know what you meant lol, thanks again . x

There is no problem with taking food onboard with you , only rule is your not allowed to eat it in the café or bars ! some o the best rolls can be had from the terminal café on the 1st floor , big & well filled for about euro 3-50 :) a good buy to take onboard !

I've taken food on board with no problems before - a little cabin picnic! :)

Rolls as above are in the Zeebrugge Terminal Café :)

We've just come back from trip across to Carribean on britannia. Met up with a couple in Southampton, stocking up on crisps, pringles, beer, sweets etc, to eat on their balcony. there are no real rules to stop you doing this. Also why would people want to take food on board, when you can eat as much as you like on board

"Also why would people want to take food on board, when you can eat as much as you like on board"

I managed to take some beer on board. ;-)

P&O CRUISES , operating mostly out of Southampton, and using ships with names ending in -(i)a (Britannia, Arcadia, Oriana, Adonia, ,..) is a different company operating to more exotic destinations (even if some call at Zeebrugge - at the cruise terminal, not Albert II Dock), notably with respect to the provision of food on board - which passengers have to buy, on the ferry, at what some feel are outrageous prices - and what passengers can bring on board.
