But the Sunshine State’s sneaky secret, and what keeps millions migrating there, is that it’s also a great parking spot for Winter. It might not be hot enough to get a leathery tan on the sand, but there’s plenty worth of other awesome highlights to snowbirding Panama City.

Resort By the Beach

One of the best reasons to visit any beach along the Panhandle is the plethora of RV parks within walking distance (sometimes stone-throwing distance) from the Gulf. In the offseason, most parks will run between $50-70 a night, even with direct beach access.

Visit: Camper’s Inn Inc . Their rates for November 1 through February 28 are $65 daily and $390 weekly, with a discount if you only need a 30-amp site.

Sure, the beach shines in the summer sun. But there are plenty of ways to enjoy it without sweating, like catching that last sliver of sun dipping under the horizon on a sunset walk. And there’s fun to be had after dark, too. Bring a flashlight (a cell phone will do in a pinch, but a headlamp is perfect). Walk the sand just past the surf and look for tiny crabs darting around. When you come close, they’ll bury themselves just under the sand, where they’re easy to grab. Their teeny pinchers are harmless, and they’re easy to pick up by hand (wash your hands after). But a beach toy sand sifter works great for an easy pickup.

Pier Park will have its streets closed off to cars in order to throw a massive party complete with live music, entertainment, fireworks, and of course, two time slots where thousands of beach balls are dropped down onto the crowd. One happens at 8:00pm, so if you’re looking to turn in early or you’ve got the kids with you, you can still take part in the fun. Once the countdown to midnight begins, the party reaches its peak for the second beach ball drop, followed by a massive fireworks display coming from Russell-Fields Pier. This is a party worthy of its own vacation, and one of the best ways to ring in the New Year.

If you can’t make it for the New Year’s celebration, there’s still plenty to do and see at Pier Park all year, making it a hot spot for locals and visitors alike. The Ultimate Panama City Travel Guide

I love this town on Florida’s Emerald Coast! It’s hard not to fall in love after seeing its white-sand beaches and clear waters. I thought I’d create a Panama City travel guide to help others planning to visit this beautiful beach town. In this post, I’ll cover everything you need to visit Panama City, FL, including the best time to visit, things to do, where to stay, and the best restaurants in the area. I also think you’ll find this post helpful if you’re trying to decide between PCB and Destin for your next vacay!

Panama City, FL Travel Guide

Best time to visit panama city, fl.

The key to visiting the panhandle is to go when school is in session, so you’ll experience the best weather without a huge crowd. This makes mid-May and late-August through mid-September the best times to visit.

The coldest month is January, with average highs of 63°F. If you’re looking for a casual winter travel destination, Panama City is a great choice. Of course, you won’t be spending time in the ocean during wintertime. If you want to be able to get in the ocean, book a late spring or late summer trip! Winter is better for activities like walking along the beach, reading in a beach chair, and fishing.

Things to do in Panama City, FL

Obviously, there’s the beach, which is probably more than enough for the beach bums! I visited in the winter and realized that there are tons of great things to do in the PCB area in addition to the beach. There are parks all over! I loved St. Andrews State Park and Camp Helen State Park (PCB is nestled right between the two). There are also plenty of places to shop – Pier Park being the main hub with tons of shops, restaurants, and beach access right across the street.

St. Andrews State Park

St. Andrews State Park is located just minutes away from PCB. There’s an $8 entry fee per vehicle. Within the park, there’s a mile-and-a-half of beaches for fishing and swimming. You can also hike, bike, camp, picnic, and more within the park. If you’re an outdoorsy person, you definitely want dedicate a day to this park while you’re in PCB! As I mentioned before, Pier Park is the main hub for shopping. It’s an outdoor mall with tons of shops (everything from department stores like Target to boutiques like Francesca’s), restaurants, and beach access right across the street. There’s also a huge ferris wheel called the SkyWheel. You could easily entertain yourself (or your family) for hours here. There’s plenty of parking too, which is always nice!

Camp Helen State Park

Whereas St. Andrews State Park is east of PCB, Camp Helen State Park is west of the city. This park is a super cool spot with a lot of history – more on that here . Remnants from an old pier (pictured below) still stand. There’s a beautiful marsh behind the old pier and walking trails throughout the park.

FYI – You do have to hike about 7/10 of a mile to get to the beach from the parking area. It’s not bad, but it’s not something I’d want to do with a ton of beach gear either because you’re walking through sand most of the way. Shell Island

Shell Island is technically in St. Andrews State Park, but the main way to access this area is via shuttle. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it to Shell Island since I visited in late December and the shuttle doesn’t run in the winter. However, this seems to be a must-see spot based on the reviews!

According to the Shell Island website, “The official  Shell Island Shuttle  runs every 30 minutes from 9 to 5 seven days a week in summer.” You can rent a boat, go on a dolphin tour, snorkel, or relax on the beach. If you have littles that enjoy shell hunting (or you like to collect them yourself), this would be a great place to add to your itinerary!

Russell-Fields City Pier

Across the street from Pier Park, you’ll find the Russell-Fields City Pier. The pier extends out 1,500ft into the Gulf of Mexico and offers incredible views of the area. I highly recommend watching a sunset from here! There’s a $3 fee per person to walk on the pier. You can also fish off this pier with a license.

Day Trip to Destin, FL

Destin is just an hour away from PCB and 100% worth a visit. In comparison to PCB, I’d say that Destin is a bit more upscale. Something to note if you’re trying to decide between the two: there are a lot more options in terms of hotels/condos in PCB, especially if you want something that’s right on the ocean. PCB is also a bit less crowded than Destin and the more affordable destination of the two, but you really can’t go wrong either way.

If you do end up in Destin, make sure to grab a bite to eat at The Back Porch. It’s a beachfront restaurant and their seafood is AMAZING. You have to try the crab bites appetizer!! I also recommend visiting Henderson State Park in Destin, FL. The park features the cleanest white sugar sand beaches and breathtakingly clear waters. This area definitely had the prettiest beaches I saw throughout my entire trip (pictured above). The entry fee is $6 for a vehicle with 2-8 passengers ($4 for a single occupant).

Where to stay in Panama City, FL

Best restaurants in panama city, fl.

• The Back Porch – There’s another location in Destin, which I mentioned. Seriously, make sure you hit one location or the other at some point (or both if you’re like me hahah). Their slaw is to-die-for and every seafood dish I tried was amazing.
• Local Steamer Seafood Market – Nothing more than a little hole in the wall but they serve the best seafood in PCB!
• Bayou on the Beach – They have Cajun-style seafood and a bit more to choose from than Local Steamer’s. Great food and service! Give the Who Dat Shrimp a try.
• Nick’s Slice Of Brooklyn Pizzeria And Bar – The perfect place to satisfy a craving for pizza & wings! They serve a wide variety of specialty pizzas so you shouldn’t have trouble finding something you like!
• New York Pizza & Grill – There are two locations in PCB: one on Panama City Beach Parkway and another in Pier Park, which will almost definitely be more crowded at any given time due to the location. They don’t have quite as many options as Nick’s when it comes to specialty pizza, but it’s another great option nonetheless.

Options for everyone

• Runaway Island – Sooo much amazing food to choose from here! They have a lot of seafood options but serve both burgers and chicken/steak dishes as well. The best part: it’s beachfront so you can enjoy your meal while taking in gorgeous ocean views!
• The Wicked Wheel – Very limited options in terms of seafood but TONS of choices when it comes to chicken and burgers. Whether you’re in the mood to build your own burger or munch on some hand battered chicken tenders, this place has you covered.
• Dee’s Hangout – Delicious food and huge portions. They serve everything from filet mignon to tacos. Their hush puppies are the bomb!! Try those or the Hang Bang Shrimp for an appetizer.

Year-Round Fun in Panama City Attractions: Explore the Best

Known for its sugary white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, Panama City Beach has rapidly grown from a quiet beachside military town to spring break partyland and, finally, a family-friendly destination.  You probably already knew Panama City Beach could keep the kids entertained with activities from go-karting to boogie boarding.

But there are also plenty of indoor options for rainy days, like Ripley’s Believe Or Not and holiday festivities. Panama City Beach has also been working hard to turn Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year into family-friendly days with live entertainment, kid-friendly events, games, and a beach ball drop during New Year’s.

In addition to all of the organized fun, there’s still the gorgeous, white sandy beaches. Despite the trending attractions like Gulf World Marine Park and Pier Park, this theme park-style city is considered one of “America’s Most Beautiful Beaches” by Conde Nast Traveler . Why such accolades for the beach?

It’s beautiful. According to the CVB website, “Panama City Beach’s legendary pure white sand resulted from quartz crystals washing down from the Appalachian Mountains centuries ago. Along their journey, the crystals were bleached, ground, smoothed, and polished until the Gulf of Mexico surfed these millions of grains of sand on the shoreline.”

Weather in Panama City Beach

Planning your trip around the weather is wise, but keep the climate from deterring you from visiting, even during the colder months. Each season has its unique appeal and opportunities for fun beyond the beach. Here’s what you can expect:

Summer : Panama City Beach experiences sweltering heat from June to September, with temperatures often reaching 90 degrees and lows around 75 degrees. All beachfront properties are equipped with central air conditioning, and most have their pools. While the beaches can get crowded, it’s also the ideal time for thrilling watersports like paragliding.

Winter: Temperatures start dropping to the 70s in November, with December through February seeing highs of 65 and lows of 44. We found this to hold during our trip over New Year’s Eve, with temperatures ranging in the low 60s and mid-50s. 

The Gulf of Mexico was chilly but still warm enough for quick dips when it wasn’t windy and raining. If your kids are determined to dive in or go boogie boarding during Fall and winter, bring a wetsuit during colder months to combat outdoor chill. The mid-60-degree weather didn’t slow our daughter down, but the rain and wind kept us indoors having fun on chilly days.

Spring: Brings some of the most temperate weather but also sees an influx of spring breakers ready to have fun. Personally, I would skip going to Panama City Beach in the spring with your family to avoid the “lively” college kids who drive in from local colleges and as far as Nashville and Atlanta. I much prefer the quieter months when families can spread out and enjoy a relaxing vacation full of beachside fun.

Panama City Beach Activities for All Ages

During summer months, set up the family alongside 27 miles of famous, pristine shoreline and let the vacation begin. My 7-month-old was more interested in eating fistfuls of beach than playing in it, but dipping his toes into the water kept him fascinated while we tried to release the sandy bounty from his hand.

Toddlers, babies, and grown-ups need plenty of sunblock and shading gear like umbrellas and hats. Fortunately, there’s a beach supply store every few blocks along the strip, including the Alvin’s Island chain. Look for the giant shark mouth doubling as a front door to make your way into a megaplex of beach fun.

For an educational outdoor adventure, the hiking and biking trail at Camp Helen State Park brings families together with beautiful views of Powell Lake and the “Old Florida” terrain. The path spans 2,000 feet and is constructed from environmentally sensitive materials, giving way to benches and covered shelter for breaks. Because the park is surrounded on three sides by water, it encompasses five different habitats, and educational signs mark many trails to guide the way.

It’s still possible to get outdoors and have fun even on a blustery, rainy day. At Gulf World Marine Park , professional divers flip and twirl mid-air, finishing with an 80-foot-high dive while a magician amazes audiences with his interactive magic show. The park’s Trainer for a Day program lets guests study dolphin behavior before stepping on stage to perform during the Dolphin Show.

ZooWorld for Kids 7 years old and up

Kids 7 years old and up can continue interacting with animals at ZooWorld as a part of the Keeper for a Day program. Home to more than 250 animals and set in a seven-acre lush tropical landscape, ZooWorld promotes wildlife preservation through hands-on activities and personalized animal encounters. Children will enjoy the “Going Wild!” show, where they can discover unique animal facts and pose for pictures with rare mammals, reptiles, and exotic birds. Your kids may be too young to become trainers, but they will definitely love bottle-feeding a tiger.

Unleash the Fun: Shipwreck Island and Coconut Creek – Exciting Adventures Await!

When your kids hit beach fatigue, take active children to Shipwreck Island Waterpark for a wonderland to splash, run and have fun in.  Little kids have their own spot at Tadpole Hole full of slides, tubes and swings. Older visitors prefer the White Knuckle River, a 660-foot family tube ride, the Great Ship Wreck and the Zoom Flume. Save time waiting in line by purchasing advance tickets with the waterpark’s online ticketing service.

My daughter was impressed by the spread at Coconut Creek Family Fun Park , home of two unique miniature golf courses with oversized animals. A life-sized elephant sprays mist and a giraffe looms over families of golfers. There’s also a human Gran Maze spanning the length of a football field and modeled after South Pacific islands. Kids will journey through Fiji, Tahiti, Samoa and Bali before completing their journey.

Indoor Fun in Panama City Beach

Whether you need a break from the sun during summer or chilly afternoons in the winter, visit Ripley’s Moving Theater to watch a 4-D movie and stop by the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium. The theater features motion, special effects, and action-packed images where kids can feel like they’re stepping into a movie themselves.

Next, let the kids loose in the Marvelous Mirror Maze for a spirited game of laser tag. The Odditorium lives up to its name with over 400 exhibits like authentic shrunken heads, a real vampire killing kit and hands-on activities.

Just across the street lies the interactive WonderWorks . You’ll know you’ve arrived — it’s the only upside-down house on the block. This four-story attraction features over 100 exhibits and challenges available to kids of all ages.

Designated wonder zones include Natural Disasters, Physical Challenges, Light and Sound, Space Discovery, an Imagination Lab, and a Far Out Art Gallery. Despite the invitation for all ages, I personally wouldn’t recommend it for kids 5 and under. Our daughter was too small for most of the activities she really wanted to do, and it was organized chaos on New Year’s Day.

The Viator site is great for discovering unusual attractions in advance of arrival and booking online sure saves time waiting in line.

Thanksgiving and Winter Holiday Fun in Panama City Beach

Families looking to escape all the Thanksgiving meal and shopping drama can head to Panama City Beach and eat at one of the many restaurants ranging from fine dining to hole-in-the-wall fun. There are more options to choose from than you’ll have time for, but no one should leave without a visit to one of the city’s seafood restaurants.

Sharky’s Beach Front Restaurant and Tiki Bar blend just the right amount of fun, foodie-inspired dishes and aesthetic value. Weather permitting, ask for a table outside to view the water. After trying various dishes, from local seafood to steaks, let the kids loose on the Pirate Ship Playground.

Sharky’s also offers a traditional “Turkey at the Tiki” package with a buffet featuring traditional favorites like green bean casserole and turkey breasts, along with crab legs, fried scallops, and grilled mahi. The best part may be kids four and under eat free; it is perfect for picky eaters who will just push food around their plate until they can go play.

There’s more to do in Panama City Beach during Thanksgiving than just eat. The beachside town started organizing family-friendly Christmas concerts, tree lighting, and fireworks kicking off the Friday after Thanksgiving. If you’re organizing a Christmas family reunion or just want to cozy up with your own little clan, Panama City Beach delivers beachfront condos, homes, and hotels.

Pier Park is FUN all year round

Whether it’s the 4th of July or New Year’s Eve, the open-air Pier Park is the place to find year-round entertainment options, events, shopping, and dining. During our visit over New Year’s Eve, we headed to Miracle Strip at Pier Park, featuring new and renovated rides from the original Miracle Strip Amusement Park.

Much to the dismay of locals and tourists, it closed after 40 years of family fun, but its spirit was revived at this new Miracle Strip. Rides include a retro carousel and Ferris Wheel, a modern Balloon Race and Red Baron rides, batting cages, and zip lines.

For New Year’s Eve, Pier Park features live music, kid’s games, and food before a beach ball drop at 8 p.m. Despite the rain, droves of families turned out and crowded around in anticipation of the big ball drop. My 4-year-old thought this was the most amazing thing she had ever witnessed (especially impressive since it was her 4th New Year’s Eve, and she is an old pro by now).

Afterward, the kids were satisfied and ready to head back to their homes, condos, and hotels to curl up. For us, it was a rented movie from our condo’s DVD kiosk and homemade popcorn. By the time our little ones were in bed, we had time to unwind before watching the New Year’s Eve fireworks from our beachfront balcony.

Holiday Accommodations in Panama City Beach

What makes the holidays in Panama City Beach especially easy and magical is the wide variety of beachfront rentals. Our family stayed at the Tidewater Beach Condominium and scored a waterside condo. Ours was a spacious one-bedroom but also had a little nook with bunk beds and an additional private bathroom. Aside from our refusal to let her 7-month-old brother sleep up top, our daughter was delighted by her own special sleeping spot.

There was also an additional pull-out couch that could sleep more family members. We had no trouble finding a spot for our travel crib in the living room, right off the kitchen stocked with pots, pans, cups and more.

The only amenity we would have needed was the beachfront balcony with two sliding doors and a patio set to sip coffee and have breakfast outdoors. Downstairs, the Waves Restaurant served up traditional breakfast right off the griddle for a satisfying start to the morning. An indoor pool and game room kept our daughter busy during the chillier parts of our stay.

Despite explaining the odds of winning at those rigged claw machine games, she managed to win not one, not two, but three stuffed animals simultaneously. (Apologies to the poor soul who probably spent $100 trying to win before she waltzed in.)

There was also a quaint little library with books, puzzles, and a DVD machine to pick various movies, including family-friendly titles. Our daughter loved picking out her “records” and putting them in the DVD machine upstairs for a movie on New Year’s Eve.

Panama City Beach Trip Planning Details

Families can drive down and take advantage of lodging specials, kids-eat-free deals and lots of space to lounge around at some of the beach’s more than 300 condo communities. Here are a few suggestions for fun-in-the-sun accommodations:

1. Tidewater Beach Resort

Resides on one of the area’s largest beaches with 570 luxury, gulf-front units overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Two lagoon pools, an indoor heated pool, fitness center with Roman spa, movie and media center and onsite restaurant keep guests relaxed.

2. Pinnacle Port Vacation Rentals

Welcomes young travelers with crafts on the pool deck. Spanning 26 acres, Pinnacle Port guests can use canoes or kayaks by day and take advantage of free Wi-Fi and DVD rentals at night.

3. The Seahaven Beach Resorts

The rental community offers three different lodging options:  Origin at Seahaven (a condominium), Seahaven Beach and The Reef Hotels. It’s well located near Pier Park, has a daily kids club on site, and shows outdoor movies by the pool. Their summer specials include “Kids Eat and Ride Free,” which allows children 12 and under eat for free with a paid adult at nearby Sharky’s Beachfront Restaurant and Tiki Bar. In addition, children 12 and under enjoy free wave runners and parasailing with each paid adult.

4. Blowin-N-The Wind Management

It boasts five different properties with accommodations ranging from multi-bedroom condominiums to three-bedroom cottages and more. Each property is said to include family-friendly amenities, such as boat docking areas, tennis and basketball courts, fitness centers, swimming pools, a putting green and more.

5. By The Sea Resorts

Welcomes guests to the Legacy, BeachBreak or Beachcomber Resorts, where there are Gulf-front suites and garden view rooms. Family specials often include pizza parties and free kids meals at the Barefoot Beach Club or nearby Calypso Beach Cafe.

6. The Sandpiper Beacon

It presents many family amenities and activities for its guests. Kids will love their indoor lazy river pool and slides, the outdoor and indoor pools and waterslides, the six-hole mini golf course, and the Gulf-front playground. Accommodations range from condos with kitchens to hotel rooms and cottages.

There’s tropical Polynesian entertainment throughout the summer; the drum beat, while the conch shell is blowing, begins the journey of song and dance with hula dancers and the exciting Samoan Fire Knife Dance. Note that you may find the college crowd a bit too loud in spring for your family.

The area is less temperate than some — in the 12th percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide. Weeks with ideal weather are listed above . Wind in Panama City is usually extremely calm . The windiest month is March, followed by February and January. March’s average wind speed of around 3.8 knots (4.4 MPH or 7 KPH) is considered “light air.” Maximum sustained winds (the highest speed for the day lasting more than a few moments) are at their highest in early to mid March where average top sustained speeds reach 13.1 knots, which is considered a moderate breeze.

Rain is somewhat common with 1 to 11 days of significant precipitation per month. Spring is the busiest for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for things to do.

The middle-year months have very comfortable weather with high temperatures that are quite warm. These months see moderate precipitation with 7 to 9 days of precipitation per month. June – August is the second busiest season for tourism in Panama City, so lodging and other accommodations may cost slightly more.

Fall (September through November)

Fall daily highs range from 88.3°F (31.3°C) and 86.1°F (30.1°C), which will feel very nice given the humidity and wind. It rains or snows a significant amount: 9 to 10 days per month. Tourism is the slowest during these months due to the weather, so hotels may be affordably priced.

Winter (December through February)

Weather is perfect this time of year in Panama City to be enjoyable for warm weather travelers. The average high during this season is between 91.9°F (33.3°C) and 88.4°F (31.3°C). Today, you can find divine food, plenty of shopping, and a vibrant nightlife scene in Panama’s capital. Casco Viejo, the oldest neighborhood of the city, is where you still find the early origins of the city when it served as an important trading hub between the New World and the Old World. Since the crumbling Spanish-colonial buildings of Casco Viejo were renovated in the 2000s, the area has evolved from a crime-ridden no-go neighborhood to Panama’s tourist hot spot.

Admittedly, Panama City doesn’t have a lot to offer in terms of landmarks and tourist sights, but it is a good place to spend a few days enjoying the amenities of a big city. It’s also a good base for visiting the Panama Canal, the rainforest, and nearby Taboga Island.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Panama City

1. Wander Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo, the original Spanish-colonial settlement built in 1671, is a must-do and also a great place to stay if you’d rather not stay in the bustling metropolis part of the city. Everything is walkable in this gorgeous neighborhood that is home to some of the trendiest bars, restaurants, and boutique hotels. Visit the Panama Canal Museum for a bit of history as well as the Museo de la Moda to learn about the unique, vibrant tapestries made by the Guna indigenous people. You can also wander the cobblestone streets and watch the sunset at one of the many rooftop bars. If you’re a coffee fanatic and want to indulge, head to Café Unido.

2. Hang out in Metropolitan Park

The Metropolitan Park is a 575-acre rainforest within the city limits. This beautiful nature sanctuary is home to 227 bird species, 45 mammals, 14 kinds of amphibians, 36 different kinds of snakes, and 284 types of trees. There are 8 kilometers (5 miles) of trails here to enjoy and you can hike up to the top of Cedar Hill for beautiful panoramic views of the city and the Panama Canal. Admission is $4 USD. You can also see 30 different species of butterflies housed on the butterfly farm for an additional $5 USD.

3. See the Panama Canal

One of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World, the Panama Canal is definitely worth checking out if you’re in Panama City. The Miraflores Locks are one of twelve locks along the Panama Canal and the closest to Panama City. The canal took 10 years and over 40,000 laborers to build (over 5,000 of whom died during construction). There is a visitor center with an observation deck and, every time a ship passes through the canal, you’ll hear a detailed explanation of what is happening. Also, Miraflores has an interesting IMAX documentary on the history of the Canal with Morgan Freeman narrating. Admission is $20 USD.

4. Explore Panama Viejo

Panama Viejo (Old Panama) is a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site and forms the original part of the city. It was founded in 1519 by Pedrarías Dávila and was the first Spanish settlement on the Pacific Coast of the Americas — and the first planned town in the Western Hemisphere. In 1691, the city was attacked and destroyed by pirate captain Sir Henry Morgan. Despite several attacks, a huge fire, and an earthquake, you can still see some of the ruins of many of the original buildings including the Old Panama Cathedral. The remaining ruins are spread out over 57 acres, including the original cathedral. Admission is $15 USD.

5. Bike along Amador Causeway

Amador Causeway is made up of rocks excavated for the construction of the Panama Canal and connects Panama City with three small islands: Naos, Perico, and Flamenco. The 6-kilometer (4-mile) ultra scenic, colorful boardwalk is popular with cyclists and filled with all kinds of restaurants where you can stop for fresh seafood and take in the views (especially at sunset). You can rent bikes for about $15 USD per day if you want to explore by bike.

Other Things to See and Do in Panama City

This open-air museum is designed to give visitors a glimpse of village life in Panama. You’ll find replicas of colonial and indigenous buildings here and on Fridays and Saturdays they have folklore dance performances. The village is divided into three parts: an indigenous village, a rural village, and an Afro-Antillean village, showing aspects of these three different population groups in Panama. Admission is $3 USD.

2. Admire some colonial art

The Museo de Arte Religioso Colonial in Casco Viejo houses colonial religious art that dates back to the 16th century. Some of the art and artifacts even made it through the attack and sacking of the city by Henry Morgan and his crew in 1671. One of the most interesting pieces is the Arco Chato, a long arch that stood unsupported for hundreds of years (the arch was used to prove that Panama was not earthquake-prone, making it an ideal place for the canal rather than Nicaragua). This is a small museum and admission is only $1 USD, so it’s worth a quick visit.

3. Take a ferry to Taboga Island

Taboga Island is a little island 19 kilometers (12 miles) off the Pacific coast of Panama City. It’s easy to do as a day tour, with return ferries costing $24 USD. The ferries leave from Amador Causeway and the ride takes about 30 minutes. Explore the island’s village, chat with the locals, go on a hike, or just chill on the sandy beach. The beach is not the nicest as the water tends to be polluted but the ocean views towards Panama City and the Panama Canal make up for that.

4. Hike Cerro Ancon

The highest hill in Panama City makes for a great hike. It’s a steep 30-minute incline, but you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views. There are two viewing platforms: one facing historic Casco Viejo, and one facing the newer skyline that’s lined with skyscrapers. Look out for wildlife along the way – you’re likely to see toucans, iguanas, and pacas. A cab ride to the trailhead, which is right by Mi Pueblito, takes about 10 minutes.

5. Marvel at contemporary art

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Panama City features various permanent and temporary exhibits from Panamanian and Latin American artists. With over 700 items in the collection, it offers a comprehensive introduction to Latin American contemporary art. There are often free exhibits that provide an opportunity to hang out with the city’s artsy crowd too. It’s the only contemporary art museum in the entire country. Admission is $5 USD.

6. Take a Spanish course

If you’ve got some time to spend in the city, consider taking a week-long Spanish course. There are a number of schools here that offer programs with one-on-one or small group classes for $230-$250 USD per week. Try the Spanish Panama Language School or Casco Antiguo Spanish School for in-depth lessons that can help you master the language.

7. Learn about Marine Life

Punta Culebra Nature Center is a science and nature center run by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute that focuses on marine life. There is also a short nature trail with three-toed sloths, iguanas, and frogs. Explanatory signs are in Spanish and English, making it an educational exhibition that’s interesting for grown-ups and kids alike. Admission is $8 USD.

8. Visit the Biomuseo

The Biodiversity Museum was designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry and it was his first design in Latin America (Gehryd designed the Dancing House in Prague, the AGO in Toronto, and the Disney Concert House in LA) . It’s worth seeing simply for the stunning design, though spending a couple of hours inside the museum is a great way to learn about Panama’s biodiversity. The museum also highlights the natural and cultural history of the country. The Biomuseo has eight galleries for its permanent exhibits, each one covering a different topic. Tickets are $18 USD.

9. Check out the seafood market

Panama’s lively Mercado de Mariscos, the seafood market, is located on the western end of the Cinta Costera, the coastal road that connects Casco Viejo with the newer part of town. The market is divided into two parts: one section is where fresh fish and seafood are sold, and the other section is where you’ll find dozens of no-frills seafood restaurants where you can try some of the fresh catch. Try the local specialty, ceviche, made from raw fish and lemon.

10. Stroll Avenida Central

Avenida Central is the pedestrian walkway where you can soak up the city’s vibe. It’s noisy and fun, with lots of street food vendors and performers, making for some excellent people-watching. Cinta Costera is the city’s waterfront park area where you can enjoy views of the ocean while grabbing an ice cream or some street food as you soak up the pace of the city.

Panama City Travel Costs

Note: Panama uses both PAB and USD. There’s no real need to carry the local currency, the Panamanian Balboa, unless you’re paying for really small things on the street. For the most part, use USD (which has the same value as PAB).

Hostel prices – Hostels in Panama City are inexpensive, with a night in a hostel dorm costing between $12-30 USD per night for a 6-8-bed dorm. Private rooms start around $22 USD per night for a double room. All hostels offer free Wi-Fi and some offer free breakfast.

Budget hotel prices – For a three-star hotel, prices start at $50 USD per night and go up from there. International hotel chains range from $75-135 USD.

Airbnb is available in the city, with private rooms ranging from $40-60 USD per night and entire apartments starting around $75-100 USD. Bigger apartments accommodating four to six people start at $150 USD per night. Book early otherwise prices can double.

Food – Like its neighbors, Panamanian cuisine features rice, black beans, yuca (a starchy vegetable similar to the potato), plantains, beef, chicken, and seafood. Common dishes include empanadas, chicken and rice, fried fish, and ceviche (a raw fish dish with lemon).

Local food stalls meals will cost around $4-6 USD. For that price, you will get a plate of chicken, rice, and beans — a staple dish in Panama. Western food such as pizza or hamburgers costs around $10-15 USD.

Panama City has the best international food in all of Central America, so take advantage of that while you’re in town. Many of the trendiest restaurants can be found in the Casco Viejo neighborhood, such as the Dining Room, Tantalo (a superb rooftop restaurant and bar atop the Tantalo Hotel), Donde Jose (fine dining Panamanian cuisine) and Casa Casco, which has three great restaurants, a rooftop bar and a nightclub. You’ll also find a number of great restaurants along Amador Causeway.

For a nice meal with wine, expect to pay around $50 USD. There are a lot of stylish, more expensive restaurants in Casco Viejo if you’re looking for something more upscale.

Domestic beer at a bar is around $2.50 USD. Cocktails at one of the popular rooftop bars are around $8-9 USD. A latte/cappuccino costs around $3.50 USD while bottled water is $1 USD.

If you plan on cooking your own food, expect to pay about $35-45 USD per week for groceries like rice, beans, seasonal produce, and some meat or fish.

Backpacking Panama City Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking around Panama City, expect to spend about $45 USD per day. This includes staying in a hostel dorm, limiting your drinking, cooking your meals, using public transportation to get around, and doing mostly free and cheap activities like hiking and wandering the Old Town.

On a mid-range budget of around $150 USD per day, you can stay in a private Airbnb, enjoy a few drinks, eat out for a few meals, take the occasional taxi, and do some paid activities like visiting the canal.

On a “luxury” budget of $220 USD per day or more, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink more, take more taxis, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Panama City Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Panama City is a pretty affordable place to visit. Unless you are dining on the higher end of things or staying in a chain hotel, you’re hard pressed to spend a lot of money here. However, there are always extra ways to keep your costs down. Here are the best ways to save money in Panama City:

• Stick to free activities – Most of Panama City’s sights can be visited for free: Casco Viejo, Amador Causeway, a stroll through the fish market and along Cinta Costera, the coastal road that offers stunning views of the bay and the freighters entering the Panama Canal.
• Eat at local food stands – Meals at local food stalls cost less than $5 USD. You’ll get rice, chicken, beans, and maybe another side plus a drink. Don’t expect a super tasty meal, but it is enough to fill you up.
• Avoid taxis – Buses are cheap and go everywhere in the city. Take the bus and save your money!
• Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is generally safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle. LifeStraw is my go-to choice as it has a built-in filter to ensure your water is always clean and safe.
• Stick to beer – Beer is cheaper than other kinds of alcohol so if you want to drink, stick to beer.
• Save money on rideshares – Uber is cheaper than taxis and is the best way to get around if you don’t want to wait for a bus or pay for a taxi.
• Carry small change – Most taxis and small shops won’t accept larger bills for small purchases so make sure you carry change.
• Avoid hot water – Get rooms with cold-water showers. Hot water always costs a lot more. It’s so hot here anyway, you’ll hardly ever want hot water. Even I got used to cold-water showers, and usually, I get cranky without hot water!
• Stay with a local – There are tons of Couchsurfing hosts (and lots of community events) here, making this a great city to Couchsurf in. Pick up some tips and save some money by staying with a local!

How to Get Around Panama City

Public transportation – It is easy to travel by city bus between Amador Causeway and Casco Viejo – buses have their destination written on the front. The main bus terminal is inside the Albrook Shopping Mall. If you think you’ll be taking the bus a lot, pick up a metro card at Albrook Terminal. The metro card is $2 USD, and then you can add however much money you think you’ll need. Since a bus ride is only $0.35 USD, adding only one dollar will get you four rides.

To recharge the card, you have to find a supermarket that offers this service (look for a sign that says Venta de Tarjeta y Recarga ) or head to Albrook Terminal. You’ll be able to navigate the bus system with the help of Google Maps.

Panama City’s first metro line opened in 2014 (the first metro system in all of Central America), but it is pretty irrelevant for tourists since it’s far away from the beaches and interesting sights. A ride is only $0.35 USD. The metro runs from 6am-10pm daily (even on holidays), with 14 different stations, running north and south and passing through the city center.

Bicycle – Cycling in Panama City is possible, but not very safe since Panama is known for its notorious drivers who often speed. The only places you can safely cycle at are Amador Causeway (where you’ll find several bike rental places) and Cinta Costera, the coastal beltway that links modern Panama City with the historic Casco Viejo neighborhood. You can rent bikes for about $15 USD per day.

Taxi – Taxis are cheap in Panama City. Be careful though: Panamanian cab drivers are known to try to rip off foreigners. Make sure to always negotiate your fare before the start of the trip, since the taxis don’t use meters. Note that taxis are cash only.

Ridesharing – Uber is available in Panama City and is cheaper than taxis, so stick to using it if you need a ride.

Car rental – You won’t need a car to get around the city, however, they can be helpful for exploring the region if you plan on leaving the city. Rentals can be found for as little as $25 USD per day for a multi-day rental. Most rental agencies require drivers to be at least 25, though some will accept drivers at 21 if they have a credit card.

When to Go to Panama City

Panama City has a short dry season between January and May, which is when there is little rain and you’ll get to enjoy clear blue skies. But since Panama is located only nine degrees north of the equator, temperatures are pretty consistent year-round.

The lowland regions, including Panama City, are always hot and humid. Daytime temperatures average 30-33°C (86-91°F), nighttime temperatures are around 21-23°C (69-73°F).

Rainy season in Panama lasts from mid-April to mid-December, but it usually only rains from late afternoon into the night, which means mornings and early afternoons can still be enjoyed. The rainiest month is November, and July and August are the months that see the least rain during the wet season. If you visit during the rainy season, pack a rain jacket and an umbrella.

You never have to deal with peak season crowds in Panama City – it never feels crowded, unless you run into a cruise ship tour group on one of the days a cruise ship docks in the port. The good news is that the cruise ships docking here are relatively small and that they usually depart at 5pm.

The only times of year that accommodation can book up (especially affordable hotels/Airbnbs) are during holidays and in February during Carnaval. If you’re planning to visit Panama City in February, look up the dates of Carnaval to avoid crazy crowds and inflated prices.

How to Stay Safe in Panama City

Panama City is generally safe but pickpocketing can occur, especially on city buses. Always be vigilant and don’t carry more cash on you than you’re planning to spend. Leave your passport and credit cards (other than the one you may be using) back at the hostel/hotel, don’t carry valuables in your purse.

Bag snatching also happens in Panama City – both on the street and in restaurants — so don’t leave your bag sitting on the chair next to you.

If you go out in Casco Viejo at night, but your hotel is in the newer part of Panama City, take a taxi or Uber back to your hotel. The El Chorillo neighborhood, adjacent to Casco Viejo, can be a bit sketchy after dark.

When taking taxis, negotiate the fare before the trip, or you might get ripped off. There have been frequent reports by foreigners about being overcharged for cab rides. If you don’t want to communicate with the driver or you don’t have cash on you, call an Uber via the app.

Keep an eye out for common scams against tourists , such as fake ATMs, taxis that don’t use a meter, and questionable tour operators.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

If you experience an emergency, dial 911.

Always trust your gut instinct. Avoid isolated areas at night, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID, before you leave on your trip.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

With a full calendar of exciting social events scheduled to kick off in 2024, the welcome mat is being rolled out for “snowbirds” searching for a sunny beach getaway this winter.

“We are thrilled to welcome both first-time and returning visitors to our beautiful beaches to create lasting memories this winter,” says Visit Panama City Beach President and CEO Dan Rowe. “Our winter residents have become a treasured part of the Panama City Beach community, and we look forward to hosting a lineup of special events throughout the season.”

Among the highly anticipated events are the annual Homecoming Dance and Social at Laketown Wharf on Wednesday, January 10, and the Winter Resident Senior Prom on Wednesday, February 7, at Edgewater Beach and Golf Resort. One of the most popular events of the season, the Winter Resident Senior Prom, features a new theme each year. The festivities conclude on Wednesday, February 21 with the Winter Resident Grand Finale, a farewell and appreciation event for those who choose Panama City Beach as their home away from home.

On Winter Resident Appreciation Days, visitors can connect over complimentary coffee, donuts and giveaways at Laketown Wharf on January 8, February 5, and February 19. A great time to learn more about the destination’s seasonal activities, everyone is encouraged to stop by for a chance to mingle with friends both old and new.

For winter residents looking for a challenge, the Panama City Beach Mystery Challenge offers the opportunity to win prizes that include rounds of golf, entertainment tickets, special event opportunities and a chance to taste cuisine from the destination’s finest eateries.

When is the best time to visit Panama?

With beautiful islands , Indigenous outposts, dense rainforests, cosmopolitan cities and two magnificent coasts to explore,  Panama is somewhere to linger.

But it pays to go at the right time – Panama lies just 9 degrees north of the equator, buffeted by the trade winds, meaning a tropical drenching often comes with the territory.

The best time for your trip to Panama will depend entirely on what you want to do while you're there. If you want to bask on golden sands or trek into the rainforest, visit during the dry season from December to April. 

Surfers prefer the rainy months from April to December when the best waves are unleashed along the coast. Divers and wildlife spotters gather from August to September when humpback whales, sharks and orcas congregate off the Pacific shoreline. 

Many locals say Panama actually has two climates – one for the Caribbean and one for the Pacific. A visit to the Caribbean Coast can be a damp experience at any time of year, though the sun usually puts in an appearance in the morning and afternoon. The Pacific Coast sees sunny skies (and peak prices) during the dry season from December to April when hordes of sun-seekers flock south from the US.

Don’t underestimate the impact of Panamanian public holidays; normal life shuts down completely for seasonal celebrations such as Día de la Independencia in November, Easter in April, and Christmas in December. Easter, November, Christmas and New Year are the best times for festivals

Panamanians go all out during festivals and Christian feast days, so these holidays are always a lively time to visit. Locals flock to the coast in big family groups and beaches can be mobbed. Arrive early to stake out a patch of sand.

Plan your travel well ahead of time for any public holiday – hotel prices can rise to double the normal rate, and transport is often booked out weeks in advance.

Panama is warm year round, but temperatures creep even higher from December, peaking around Easter when daytime highs of 32ºC (90ºF) are common. Plan to be somewhere near the ocean or a waterfall if you visit in March or April.

Surfers are still enjoying swells on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts in March, and if Easter falls in the same month, things can get very busy. Semana Santa celebrations blaze a trail through Panama in the week before Easter with processions and re-enactments of the crucifixion held all over the country. As April rolls on tourist numbers dwindle, meaning lower prices and less competition for space.

Note that Easter coincides with spring break , when North American students join the tourist throng, adding to the demand for accommodations and transport.

Don't expect to get much done in Panama in November – the whole country takes off to celebrate multiple independence-related festivals from both Spain and Colombia, such as Colón Day and Día de la Independencia. Panama City empties out and beaches fill up, but there’s still plenty of rain and it can be torrential at times.

The warm-up for the Christmas holidays impacts travel right through December. Locals move around the country in huge numbers, and tourists start to flock in from elsewhere, particularly North Americans seeking winter sunshine. Christmas itself sees maximum demand and peak prices.

With dry season and tourist season at their peaks, January is a big month for travel in Panama, particularly in beach areas. The weather creates prime conditions for kitesurfing, with Pacific temperatures at their warmest and consistent breezes along the coast. The mountain town of Boquete is filled with people and blooms for its flowers and coffee festival, and music fills the streets of Panama City during the Panama Jazz Festival .

Warm, dry weather keeps tourists coming to the Pacific Coast well into February, and the Caribbean Coast also sees plenty of visitors. Depending on the timing of Ash Wednesday, February can be one of the busiest times of the year as the carnival rolls into Panama City.

Mid-December and mid-April are the best times for dry weather

The prime time to visit Panama is during the dry season, but you’ll have to share the experience. Beach areas are swamped by local and international visitors from Christmas through Easter. Savvy travelers mix up time on the coast with trips to explore the rainforests in the interior.

Be aware that “dry season” is a relative term in Panama. While the Pacific Coast – Panama City and anywhere south of the continental divide – basks under sunny skies, the highlands and Caribbean Coast still get some showers. 

This is the busiest time for hiking in Boquete and exploring the San Blas Archipelago, but the wind can reduce visibility for snorkelers. 

With the flood of winter sun-seekers, expect lots of competition for rooms, transport and space on the beach all over Panama. Prices are high everywhere and hotel rates are not far off the festival peak throughout the dry season.

Mid-April to early December is the best time for budget travelers

The rainy season is the quietest and cheapest time to visit Panama, but you’ll get wet. There are regular rain showers, some of them torrential, but it doesn’t rain all day, every day – you’ll still get a daily dose of vitamin D. 

With sporadic, refreshing rain showers, the weather is generally pleasant throughout Panama in May. This is the start of the five- to six-month nesting season for loggerhead and green sea turtles on the Caribbean coast and is the best time to visit if you'd like to observe them in the wild.

Humidity soars in June and July, and rain showers grow more frequent with regular thunderstorms. Tourist numbers are low, and so are prices, and the worst rains are still several months away. Devils hit the streets for Corpus Christi, mixing up Catholic tradition with Panamanian customs, and music and dancing light up Santa Catalina as the locals celebrate the Fiesta de Virgen del Carmen.

The rainy season coincides with the best swells on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, attracting plenty of surfers. August and September are also the prime months to visit  Parque Nacional Coiba and the Archipiélago de Las Perlas for sightings of sharks, whales or orcas. 

This is a time to travel strategically; in late October and early November, the rain can be unrelenting, so it pays to be based somewhere with plenty of things to do indoors. On the flip side, crowds dissipate and prices drop to affordable levels across the country.

Bucking the national trend, September and October are the driest months to visit the  Bocas del Toro islands. There's also the opportunity to enjoy the festival of the sea, Feria Internacional del Mar, celebrated with folk music and a feast of seafood in September. In October, Panamanians celebrate regional fairs, such as Isla Tigre in San Blas. In Portobelo, the Festival del Cristo Negro attracts thousands of devout pilgrims from all over the country to pay penance and party.

Scuba diving is a year-round activity, including during the rainy season, but land-based activities can be trickier. During the rainiest months, travel can be almost impossible in parts of the highlands.

When Is The Best Time Of The Year To Visit Panama?

This is a relative question because depending on your reasons and which activities are attracting you to Panama, the time of year to visit will change.

However, most will agree that the best time of the year to visit Panama for a holiday is during the dry season between January, February and March.

The period from mid-December to March sees the most pleasant temperatures. You will get dry days with plenty of sunshine . There is also a gentle breeze with some cloud coverage so it brings relief from the sun and high temperatures.

That said, there are some questions you should ask yourself to help narrow down the best time of the year to visit Panama for you . Answer these questions to get started:

• Which part of the country are you thinking of exploring?
• Are you okay with variable terrains?
• Does the presence of crowds bother you?
• Does high humidity have a negative impact on your comfort?
• Are you comfortable with cooler or warmer temperatures?

We think the best time to visit Panama is during the shoulder seasons . In Panama, these are a couple of weeks during mid-December and mid-April to early May . These shoulder months bring short spells of sunshine between the wet and dry seasons and fewer crowds. What Is The Worst Time To Visit Panama?

Is it the wet season?

Again, this is relative. If you’re a surfer and want to visit Panama to enjoy its waves, then the rainy season is the best time to visit! This isn’t true for those of you seeking endless days on the beach or wanting to experience Panama’s incredible hiking trails. 

Even so, most will agree that the worst time to visit Panama is during the wet season , especially the months of October and November which see the most rainfall. Then again, the country holds some fantastic festivals during these months!

That said, it’s a busy time for domestic travel due to the number of national holidays. You’ll find many roads are blocked due to parades and the shops and businesses all but shut down. So, not ideal if you’re trying to travel and have a relaxing holiday.

• If you’re looking for beach days, the worst time to visit is…depends on what side of the country you go!

Caught you out? We were confused at first, too…Panama has an interesting geological topography and climate. 

Panama Geographic Overview

Panama has both a Caribbean side and a Pacific side and is generally categorised into two climates : dry and wet . But the Caribbean side doesn’t really see a dry season. 

This is because although Panama has a tropical weather pattern created by the collision of the north and south Trade Winds, it features a subclimate on the Caribbean side: an equatorial climate. 

You can expect it to be hot and rainy all year round on the north Caribbean coast , as is expected by an equatorial climate but, tropical on the Pacific Coast.

Tropical climates are categorised by hot weather but with a dry and wet season.

Panama is a Central American country located just 8 degrees north of the equator , its close proximity to the equator is the reason why it has a tropical climate. It doesn’t matter what side of the country you are on; temperatures will be fairly consistent all year round.

In fact, the landscape is what alters the temperatures. North of the Isthmus, Panama has a central mountain range which divides the Pacific Coast and Caribbean Coast. 

You will find that the temperatures vary with altitude rather than with seasons. The higher you go, the cooler it becomes and even the nights can become chilly. Whereas, in the lowlands, it is hot and humid during the day and only slightly cooling off to give pleasant nights.

The North Pacific Coast sees drier plains than the South as it is sheltered by Panama’s mountainous spine. However, due to this, the south is more lustrous. If you’re visiting during the wet season the Azuero Peninsula could be a great shout as it sits in the north Pacific side of Panama!

Our Experience Visiting Panama

“There are more species of birds and plants in Panama — a country the size of South Carolina — than there are in all of Canada and the United States combined.” Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

Jack and I have only been to Panama once but it was enough to carve the destination into our hearts forever. So much so that we are already planning a return trip!

The start of my journey to Panama found me on a sailing boat in early May 2022. Departing from Colombia’s popular port city of Cartagena, I was heading for the San Blas Islands on a 5-day sailing trip. 

Jack decided to fly straight to Panama City and meet me after this adventure as he isn’t a fan of boats! It was a decision he questions now and again…

The San Blas Islands were my first encounter with Panama. They were something special and along with 8 other people we created lifetime memories there. If you get the chance to go, make sure you plan for at least a day trip to the San Blas Islands, preferably more!

The weather was perfect . We had sunny skies for the most part although there were a few dark clouds and the odd shower but these didn’t last long and were generally at night. There was one time we were snorkelling and soft droplets began to fall, but the water was warm and, in my opinion, it made the activity even better! 

May is the start of the rainy season , but even if there are heavier skies the downpours seem to be less frequent and softer on the Caribbean side.

After the San Blas Islands, I headed to Panama City where we spent a few days . We experienced only one day of rain – when we were walking around Casco Viejo . And, although the skies were duller the sun still made a constant appearance. 

By the time we reached Playa Venao on the Azuero Peninsula , we had a solid week of rain. We were there to surf and since we were in the water most of the day it didn’t affect us. However, there was no opportunity for sunbathing.

Afterwards, we headed to Boquete which is a town in Panama’s central mountain range. There, we had a fantastic time hiking , exploring and eating our way through local delicacies.

We saw rain but not as frequently as the week before and generally only in the evening and night. The mornings were fresh and filled with wildlife , and when we did most of our exploration – this was the best time to take a guided wildlife tour through the jungles.

Would We Recommend Visiting Panama In May?

Panama is a year-round destination and although May is thought of as a bad time to visit we had a great time. It is just at the end of the shoulder season which means you’re likely to get both sunshine and rain , with more rain towards the end of the month.

Since we enjoy hiking and nature experiences just as much as beach days we weren’t bothered that we couldn’t enjoy sunbathing. If the beach is what you’re after, I would suggest visiting mid-April instead.

For all other activities, May is a good time to visit. Since it falls into the off-season, attractions are cheaper , there are fewer tourists and accommodation is more affordable. This makes May a great time to visit if you’re travelling on a budget.

During May and with most of the wet season you’ll notice the downpours lasting no more than an hour or two during the day with most occurring at night. Therefore, it is still possible to plan activities but aim for the mornings.

As the wet season progresses, hiking trails can become bogged down, soggy and dangerous so I also wouldn’t recommend visiting later in the season if you want to go hiking.

Panama In January

In January, Panama offers the perfect escape. With an average temperature of 27ºC, it marks the first month of the dry season , making it an ideal time to explore. This is when Panama’s beaches shine their brightest, with golden sands beckoning sun-seekers.

For nature enthusiasts, the rainforest hiking experiences are truly enchanting during this time as the forests are lustrous and green following the rainy season. 

Adventurers can also embrace the thrill of kitesurfing along the coast. With the Trade Winds at their strongest from December to mid-February you’ll get the perfect conditions for this exhilarating sport.

The downside is that it’s one of the busiest months to visit Panama . January stands out as a popular month of the year where the skies are often exceptionally clear, creating a stunning backdrop but attracting the most crowds and higher prices.

In February, Panama is at its prime with an average temperature of 28ºC. It’s the height of the peak season , offering up to 9 hours of glorious sunshine. 

The weather is warm and dry , making it an excellent time for beach lovers and rainforest hiking. It’s the perfect time to visit if you want to explore the islands on the Pacific Coast, go snorkelling and take part in adventure sports such as kitesurfing

Just keep in mind, it’s a bustling time to explore this beautiful country so you can expect high prices for tourist attractions and accommodations. You’ll need to book activities in advance to ensure they don’t get booked up so pre-planning is a must!

Panama In March

In March, Panama continues its sunny streak , much like January and February. With an average temperature of 28ºC, it’s still the height of the dry season . Panama’s golden beaches and rainforest hikes remain irresistible. 

Additionally, it’s an excellent time to explore places like Bocas del Toro and Guna Yala – San Blas Islands . Notably, Bocas del Toro enjoys two relatively dry spells, one being around March, making it a prime time to visit this coastal gem.

Again, expect higher prices.

Panama In April

In April, Panama has the warmest of temperatures , with an average of 29ºC that can occasionally peak at 32ºC. It marks the end of the dry season , offering the last of the dry weather up until mid-April. 

Easter is a highlight with the country celebrating this holiday. The beaches get crowded and you’ll find daytime highs often reaching over 30ºC. 

It’s worth noting that Easter coincides with spring break , so expect bustling crowds if you’re visiting during this period.

This is an ideal time for hiking in the forests as you’ll be shaded from the heat by tropical trees. But, it’s important to keep in mind that mid-April signals the start of the wet season. However, this shoulder season can be an excellent period to visit, as prices start to drop. 

Just remember that while April brings warmth, sunshine isn’t always guaranteed and it begins to get humid . Puffy hair anyone?

Panama In May

In May, Panama offers an average temperature of 28ºC. It marks the first month of the wet season , signalling the end of the shoulder season towards mid-May. 

If you’re a surf enthusiast, it’s an exciting time as waves begin to grow larger, creating ideal conditions for catching the perfect ride!  Hiking is still possible and the wetter weather brings fewer crowds and more affordable rates.

Nature lovers will find May remarkable, as it’s the start of the nesting season for loggerhead and green sea turtles along the Caribbean coast.

You can expect the odd showers at the start of the month and becomes more frequent towards the end. Even so, rain showers during the wet season last no more than an hour or two during the day.

Panama In June

This month is a dream for surfers , as the waves are at their best, providing thrilling rides along the coast. It’s also a fantastic time for nature enthusiasts as it can be one of the best times to spot wildlife.

The rain brings life to the jungle and oceans making it the very best time to experience water based-activities. You’ll find that the lakes and rivers fill and flow faster so if you fancy white water rafting , this is the month to visit.

Additionally, June marks the celebration of the Corpus Christi festival in La Villa de Los Santos, a cultural highlight with vibrant parades and festivities. 

However, it’s essential to note that humidity soars in June, and rain showers, along with regular thunderstorms, become more frequent. Be prepared for a downpour if you plan to explore Panama during this time.

The good news is that even though the skies are in near-constant cloud coverage, the rain lasts only for an hour or two and tends to be mid to late afternoon.

Panama In July

In July, Panama embraces a comfortable average temperature of 27ºC . It’s a haven for surfers along the Pacific Coast, where the best waves continue to form; head to Playa Venao on the Azuero Peninsula for a great experience.

While the Caribbean Coast still sees regular showers it is drier in comparison to the Pacific side, for history enthusiasts, this is a good time to visit Portobelo .

Surprisingly, the Pacific Coast is drier than that in May and June; humidity is also slightly lower than in July. 

July also sees the start of the humpback whale migration which attracts wildlife fanatics to the Pacific Coast. July is still considered an off-peak month for visitors, meaning you can find better hotel rates and fewer crowds.

July is also quite a festive month in Panama, with a range of celebrations, including the Fiesta de Virgen del Carmen in Santa Catalina, Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Isla Taboga, and two more in Las Tablas. 

It’s a great time to immerse yourself in the rich cultural traditions of Panama!

Panama In August

The month of August in Panama is a haven for divers and wildlife enthusiasts as humpback whales, sharks, and orcas continue to gather in their thousands along the Pacific shoreline. The best place to spot them is at Pearl Island.

For surfers, the waves are still inviting , making it a fantastic time for riding the waves. However, it’s worth noting that August is the cloudiest month of the year in Panama.

Despite the clouds, it’s still possible to visit the Caribbean side of Panama. The San Blas Islands typically see rain for only an hour or so in the afternoon but have warm, sunny skies in the morning. The rain actually brings a welcome relief from the humidity, leaving clear skies afterwards.

In the lush rainforests, August marks a thriving period , with nature bursting with life and greenery. It’s a unique time to witness Panama’s natural beauty in full bloom.

Panama In September

In September, Panama is well and truly into the wet season, offering an average temperature of 27ºC. This month continues to present an exciting opportunity for divers and wildlife enthusiasts , as humpback whales, sharks, and orcas gather off the Pacific coast.

However, due to the rain, there’s less visibility for scuba diving and snorkelling so it’s preferable to take boat trips to see them rather than underwater adventures. 

September also marks the last chance to experience Panama ‘s hiking trails before heavy rains set in, so it’s a unique time to explore the country with fewer visitors and better rates, ideal for budget travellers!

Surfers will continue to find fantastic waves during this season. For those of you interested in the Bocas del Toro island s, September is surprisingly one of the driest months to visit.

Keep in mind that for hiking, towards the end of September, it isn’t the most ideal time to explore, as it marks the beginning of a wetter period that extends into October and November.

Panama In October

In October, Panama offers a comfortable average temperature of 26ºC . This is the prime time to experience Panama with as few visitors as possible, ensuring a more tranquil exploration of the country.

The landscape thrives during this month, creating a vivid rainforest. The rivers and lakes are full and new life has sprung into every nook and cranny of the country. It continues to be a great time to observe the whale migration.

Although daily rain is guaranteed, the downpours are typically confined to a few hours in the late afternoon. Luckily, the weather is quite predictable, allowing for easy itinerary planning.

The best part is Panama begins to celebrate regional fairs during October, offering a glimpse into the country’s rich cultural traditions.

For those interested in visiting Bocas del Toro , note that Bocas enjoys two relatively dry spells, one of which is in October. This makes it a great time to explore this coastal treasure!

In November, Panama continues to offer a pleasant average temperature of 26ºC. It’s still the best time to experience the country with as few visitors as possible.

However, it’s worth noting that the rain can be unrelenting in November, with the most rain per year, often up to 5 hours a day, although this is still usually in the afternoons. 

This month is when the whole country takes off to celebrate multiple independence-related festivals, a time of cultural richness and celebrations from both Spain and Colombia.

Panama City tends to empty out as people head to the beaches, but the rain, at times torrential, still accompanies the festivities.

November isn’t the best time to visit the Caribbean Coast, as it experiences heavy rainfall. However, the end of November sees a drastic change in weather, with the rains starting to die off, particularly on the Pacific Coast.

If you’re looking for the most budget-friendly options, November is the cheapest time of the year to visit Panama. 

Again, the month continues to be a unique opportunity to witness humpback whales from both the northern and southern hemispheres as they migrate to mate and give birth, creating a remarkable natural spectacle.

In December, Panama’s average temperature remains 26ºC, setting the stage for a delightful holiday season . However, it’s essential to pre-book accommodations, as Christmas and the period onwards mark the start of the dry season , drawing visitors from around the world.

As the month progresses, the weather warms up, and by mid-December , Panama experiences a dramatic decrease in rainfall , making it an excellent time to explore. The sea temperatures are also comfortable, at around 27°C (81°F).

If your plan is to witness the wonder of the Panama Canal , mid-December just before Christmas and New Year’s is the best time to visit, ensuring a smooth and memorable journey through this engineering marvel.

The rainforests in December are truly special, buzzing with new life after the rains. It’s an exceptional time to immerse yourself in the natural wonders of Panama.

It’s also the best time to take to the water, activities such as white water rafting and kitesurfing are ideal during this period.

Does Panama Have Seasons?

Panama does not have the typical four seasons most of the northern hemisphere experiences. Instead of spring, summer, autumn and winter, Panama has only two seasons: dry and wet. 

However, these seasons can differ slightly depending on which month and which side of the country you visit. 

This is due, in part, to the Isthmus of Panama, Panama’s central mountain spine and the convergence of the northern and southern Trade Winds.

Generally, the Caribbean Coast will remain damp throughout the year although the sun will appear in the mornings and afternoon. During the wet season, areas such as Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean side of Panama actually experience their driest months!

The Pacific coast sees a typical tropical climate. The dry season is from mid-December to mid-April whereas the wet season starts from mid-April and ends mid-December.

That said, Panama is a year-round destination.

During the dry season in Panama, most of the country enjoys sunny days and minimal rainfall. However, as I mentioned the Caribbean Coast will still experience occasional showers as will the highlands.

Due to the guaranteed sunshine, this is the busiest time for visiting Panama and therefore it becomes the most expensive time to visit as well. 

For hiking, popular places like Boquete and the group excursions into the national parks from Panama City can become crowded alongside excursions to the stunning San Blas Archipelago.

While it’s ideal for hiking and water-based sports, the wind during this season can reduce visibility for snorkelers, so keep that in mind if you’re planning aquatic adventures!

The peak season encompasses major holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter, as well as Carnival season. 

The rainy season in Panama stretches from mid-April through December , with its peak occurring in late October and November. During these wettest months, travel in the highlands can become challenging, if not impossible. 

The low season in Panama corresponds to the rainy months, particularly from June through November. This is when you’ll find the most affordable rates in travel, tours and accommodation.

The highlight of the wet season is the beauty of Panama’s natural landscape which truly flourishes. The annual whale migration also takes place during this season which is perfect for nature enthusiasts.

On the Pacific side, you’ll encounter thunderstorms and brief, intense tropical downpours. Meanwhile, on the Caribbean side, showers are less frequent, often occurring at night.

Festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm in Panama. Traditionally, you’ll find water trucks, known as “culecos,” at most celebrations during the hottest months which spray the crowds with water.

• January: Feria de las Flores y del Café in Boquete (date varies).
• February: Carnival and Ash Wednesday (Feb/March) are celebrated all over the country, but especially in Las Tablas and Panama City, with an aquatic version in Penonomé; Comarca de Guna Yala (Feb 25) celebrates the Guna Revolution of 1925, their independence day; Festival de los Diablos y Congos , biennially in Portobelo (2019,2021,2023…)
• March: Feria Internacional de David , Chiriquí; Semana Santa celebrations , celebrated everywhere, but most colourfully in La Villa de Los Santos, Pesé and Guararé, on the Azuero Peninsula.
• April: Feria de las Orquideas in Boquete (date varies); Feria International del Azuero in La Villa de Los Santos (date varies). Easter holidays!
• May: Labor Day.
• June: Corpus Christi, La Villa de Los Santos.
• July: Fiesta de Virgen del Carmen , Santa Catalina; Nuestra Señora del Carmen (July 16) on Isla Taboga; Patronales de La Santa Librada and Festival de la Pollera in Las Tablas (July 20–22).
• August: Panama La Vieja Day , Panama City; Festival Nacional del Manito Ocueño , Ocú. 
• September: Feria Internacional del Mar, Bocas del Toro; Feria de la Mejorana , Guararé.

The rainy season in Panama, also known as the wet season or the low season starts around mid-April and ends mid-December. You can expect daily showers lasting an hour or so towards the late afternoon and evening.

The rainiest/wettest month in Panama is October and November. Although these are the wettest months Panama is a year-round destination. There are many festivals and wildlife adventures to experience during this period; notably the humpback whale migration. 

The cheapest time to visit Panama is October and November at the height of the wet season. Although daily rain is guaranteed it is still worth visiting Panama during this period. The rainforests are truly spectacular and the whale migration is in full swing. Surprisingly, the islands of Bocas del Toro have a dry period in October.

October is thought of as one of the worst months to visit Panama as the rains are at their heaviest. However, October can still be a good time to visit Panama. If you are travelling on a budget, seeking cultural festivities or hoping to see humpback whales migrating along the Pacific Coast, October can prove to be the perfect time to visit Panama.

Best Time Of The Year To Visit Panama Conclusion

In our opinion, the best time of the year to visit Panama is late November into mid-December or mid-April into early May . Panama is a wonderful country which remains less crowded than other Central American countries. 

Therefore it’s a great place to visit if you want to immerse yourself in local culture , food and experiences without being swamped by other tourists. The country is still unique and authentic with multiple locations to visit. 

It has a typography for most holiday-makers with pristine beaches, untouched islands and mystical cloud forests. The urban buzz around Panama City is fun and lively and the Panamanians are a f riendly, welcoming people.

Getting to Panama City Beach

There are no non-stop flights between Canadian gateways and   Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) .  However, you can connect through the U.S -- the airport is currently served by Delta, American, Southwest and United airlines  daily. The airport is conveniently located about 15 minutes from the beach.

Driving to PCB is an easy drive from any direction . Highway 79 is the most direct route from the north . From east or west , just take Highway 98 (Panama City Beach Parkway) directly into Panama City Beach.

Panama is located well inside the tropics with a pre-equatorial climate, being placed at the crossroads of Central and South America. The good thing about Panama is that it has two seasons. The dry season that occurs from December to March and the wet season that lasts the rest of the year. 

The northeastern winds prevail which bring some rainfall on the north side that faces the Caribbean Sea, when the sea is warmer. The south side facing the Pacific Ocean, the weather becomes very dry and the country comes alive with adventure, activity and great wildlife spotting opportunities! It is hot almost everywhere, and the sun shines with very little rain. 

To find a bit of cooler weather, there are the tierras templadas, or “temperate lands” in the area surrounding Boquete, a quaint colonial town in the beautiful highlands of Panama. 

During the dry winter season, the little rain that does occur comes in the form of aguaceros, which is the Panamanian way of describing a thunderstorm of torrential downpour. These walls of water occur very sparingly throughout the months and last only for some minutes, usually in the afternoon, or early hours of the night. While the weather can sometimes be described as very unpredictable in Panama, the dry season makes way for a lot of tourism for people escaping the oppressing and cold climates back home. 

The dry season is the best time to visit Panama because it is summertime in the Equatorial nations, meaning that the heat and dry landscape from the south comes up and touches Panama in a beautiful and pleasant way, perfect for vacationing and fun! It is especially ideal to visit Panama during the winter months because it is much different than traveling during the long, wet season. For example, scuba diving in Panama during the dry season makes way for clearer waters as opposed to the wet season because the visibility is extremely ideal due to the lack of rain. 

Where to go in Panama in Winter

Panama city.

Panama City is the biggest and most famous city in the country, as well as being a household name of the region. This city is a beacon of economic prosperity and the frontrunner of stability in an otherwise increasingly unstable region. With over 1.5 million inhabitants, the city is the entrance of the Pacific as well as the Carribean. Founded by Spanish Colonists, it was a stopover of one of the most important trade routes in the world at its time, so prosperity is something that Panama City has experienced since time immemorial. 

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Casco Antiguo, the old town of Panama to step into the rich colonial past of the city, as well as getting a good view into the modernity of the country. The Panama Viejo is a great way to see the city’s initial inception and learn about its uphill battle against the pirates that infested the seas. Best of all, visit the Panama Canal to get an experience of one of the most important trade passages in the entire planet! Panama City in the winter is especially pleasant because it allows you to walk through the city without having to worry about humidity and rain all day. Another great catch to being in Panama City in the winter is experiencing Carnival in a beautiful Latin American city.

Located on the Southern Pacific coast of Panama, Las Tables is the centre of Panamanian folk music, art, food, culture and architecture. Its name meaning “the boards”, comes from the ship that was taken apart to build the first settlements in the town. The political landscape in Las Tablas was also unique as one of the most beloved presidents in Panama was from Las Tablas. What it is best known for is its Carnival culture. The city comes alive but also splits apart into two carnival factions. Calle Ariba (Uptown) and Calle Abajo (Downtown) are on the same street but divides the town into a competition of queens, parades, fireworks, plazas, food, concerts and extravagance in a way to outpower the other side. To get a taste of this, the winter is the best time to pay the city a visit!

The Carribean capital of Panama, Colon has always been known as Panama’s second city. The site of an American military outpost, the city was a centre for the American expat community. Later becoming a centre of Latin American Carribean commerce, Colon was the centre of the Panama Railroad. During its heyday, the city was known for its nightclubs, cabarets and theatres. Massive restoration has created a revival in the city after decades of decline. During the winter, Colon is a great centre to get to the beach towns and Carribean beaches of Panama. The dry season creates a great snorkelling opportunity since the water is so clear from the lack of rain!

What to Do in Panama in Winter

Jazz and jive.

In January, Panama City comes alive in a way that is unique. Started in 1965, the Panama Jazz Festival is a multi-day extravaganza that attracts the world’s best jazz artists and spreads them out throughout this Latin American metropolis. The best thing — the concerts take place in the pleasant outdoors and are completely gratis! Put your jazz hat on and get your jazz hands out because you will be having a great time jiving and jamming to one of the world’s most beloved genres!

Costume at Carnival

One of the most important events of the year in Panama, Carnival takes place during the commencement of the Lent festivities, and is a time when the entire country comes together for a feast of the eyes, taste and feel! Live music overpowers the cities, where people dance for days. Food stalls smelling up the avenues and providing a delicious taste of Panama with traditional and contemporary fare. Parades line up and down the streets in an extravagant display of celebration. There is a pageant for the Carnival Queen and a crowning where water is sprayed from the floats! Another unique Carnival custom are water balloon and water gun fights! While all cities in Panama experience a great time and are equally great places to get in on the festivities, Las Tablas is the best place to go for Carnival!

Sea fare at the Sea Fair!

Along the beach fronts of Isla Colon, there is a great excuse to have fun in the sun, other than just being there! The Feria del Mar is a great place to experience the beautiful seaside culture of the country. Panama is surrounded by stretches of water, and a thriving history of sea-based culture gives this festival legitimacy to be a celebrated and well worth event to attend! Free sea snacks are thrown out at people as you can visit the parades and the exhibitions of the boats built or decorated by the fishermen and boatmen of this country. You will be able to take boat rides along the beach, look at the beautiful craftsmanship of the local industry, and dance around to live music performances of this dynamic and thriving nation!

Fabrics, Fashion, Fun!

The Pollera is the beautiful traditional garb of the Panamanian woman. The pollera is a long, full skirt with many gathers. This was a very common dress of the women of Europe at the time and said to have been brought over to Panama from Spain as early as the 1700s. This is a beautiful cotton skirt printed in beautiful floral designs most commonly used in tropical climates. These are very closely related to the traditional dress of the Southern Spanish region of Andalusia. La Pollera Festival was established to create awareness of the dress and to keep up this beautiful cultural garb. Women from around the country come with the best ateliers of the area to pay homage to this traditional and very special art. There are pageants, parades and awards for the best Pollera in many categories. 

What to Pack

For the coasts and the inner plains of Panama, bring lightwear, and a sweatshirt for the evening, and the blasting air conditioning. Some snorkeling equipment is ideal, as you will be using the clear waters of the dry season to your advantage, so bring those water shoes and trunks! Sunscreen and a sun hat is very important all year round in Panama, so it is very important to bring things that will protect your skin from the blasting sun. If you want a cooler experience in the highlands, make sure to get a pair of very good hiking boots.

1. Plan the ultimate beach day

Known for its soft, white sand, and clear, turquoise-colored water, one of the best things to do in Panama City with kids is to spend a day at world-famous Panama City Beach!

Splash in the water, build a sandcastle or warm yourself under the sun (with SPF, of course!).

There are nearly 100 beach access points along the 27-mile shoreline of Panama City Beach, so unless you are staying in a hotel on the beach, you have to find access points and parking.

Access points are clearly marked but some are a little tricky because they are in between buildings. 

Our personal favorite Panama City Beach access points include Rick Seltzer Park and Schooner’s Beach.

If you’re traveling with pets, Dog Beach (at access 56, 57, and 58 in front of Pier Park near the Russell-Fields Pier) is pet-friendly and open to dogs on leashes.

If you’re not staying at a beach resort that offers beach chairs, there are several places in Panama City Beach to rent beach chairs and umbrellas – some of which will even deliver the chairs to you and offer full set-up.

The most popular vendor is Adventures at Sea . Along with chair rentals, they also offer beach bonfire set-up, parasailing, banana rides, and watercraft rentals.

2. Visit Pier Park

Pier Park is a huge outdoor shopping, dining, and entertainment complex.

With 124 stores, ranging from big box stores like Target, to clothing, home goods, shoes, and jewelry stores, Pier Park is also home to several restaurants ranging from fast food to special occasion dining.

Entertainment options at Pier Park include live music at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge , seasonal events, as well as Grand Imax Pier Park 16 movie theater.

For even more fun, visit the Dave and Busters arcade, enjoy the Mirror Maze and Laser Craze, Pirate’s Quest Laser Tag , and catch panoramic views of the gulf from the SkyWheel Ferris wheel!

Wherever we travel as a family, we always check for top-rated state parks to visit.

State Parks are a great way to get out into nature, view the natural wildlife, and blow through a little excess energy. 

St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach is filled with beauty, including beaches, bird-watching, and several hiking trails. 

There are also plenty of water activities, such as snorkeling, swimming, and fishing. 

Also notable is that both camping and glamping are available at St. Andrews State Park, and it is the spot where you catch the Shell Island Shuttle (more on that coming up!).

Other state parks to explore near Panama City Beach include:

10. Meet marine life at Gulf World Marine Park

Gulf World Marine Park provides an entire day’s worth of family fun, filled with interactive experiences, educational content, and more.

On your visit, you’ll meet your favorite sea creatures, including dolphins, stingrays, sea lions, and sharks.

They even offer up-close animal encounters and dolphin training sessions where you’re able to meet, pet, and swim with dolphins.

Gulf World is also known for its entertaining dolphin, bird, and sea lion shows shows which are all included in the admission price.

Expect tons of fun photo opportunities, educational programs, and fun gift shops to pick out some sweet souvenirs.

11. Picnic at Frank Brown Park

When visiting Panama City with kids, pack a tasty picnic and head over to Frank Brown Park .

This recreation center is a community staple with large picnic pavilions and a playground drawing both locals and tourists alike.

After your picnic, kids can run free in the surrounding grassy areas, enjoy the park, or try pick-up games at one of their many sports facilities. 

Frank Brown Park also has an aquatic center, bike trails, and an outdoor amphitheater where seasonal events happen throughout the year. 

12. Set sail on a pirate cruise

As one of the most unique things to do in Panama City with kids, book tickets to set sail on a Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise ! 

All ages are welcome on this pirate-themed cruise ship, though it’s ideal for families with younger children who have ample imagination.

On board, children will sing, enjoy a pirate dance party, find sunken treasure, and play with water guns ( adults…mind the splash zone ). 

In addition, adult guests can purchase beer, wine, margaritas, rum punch, and soda to drink, as well as hot dogs, snacks, and candy.

13. Hike at the Panama City Conservation Park

Nature-loving families, we highly recommend a trip to the Panama City Conservation Park . 

Here, you’ll see Panama City Beach at its best with diverse ecosystems, hiking trails, and wildlife spotting. 

This protected park is home to birds, amphibians, and mammals, along with local trees and plants.

Additional planning tip: There are several bike-friendly paths available, as well as 24 miles worth of trails, and 1 mile worth of boardwalks that lead through cypress domes.

14. Take a trip to Shell Island

Shell Island is a beautiful, 7-mile long, undeveloped island located only a few miles offshore from Panama City Beach.

People love visiting here to go swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, dolphin watching, and shell picking.

Plus, it gives you a chance to get away from the condos and crowds to experience the untouched wilderness.

The only way to get to Shell Island is by water via the  Shell Island Shuttle or a private boat, pontoon, or jet ski rental.

The Shell Island Shuttle departs St. Andrews Park on an every 30-minute rotation and is a 10-minute ride both there and back.

Keep in mind that there are no concession stands, restrooms, picnic pavilions, or trash cans available on Shell Island, so go prepared with everything you need.

15. Go pier fishing

The Russell Fields Pier (nicknamed “City Pier”) is located in front of Pier Park, while the M.B. Miller Pier (nicknamed “County Pier”) is 3 miles to the east, close to Shipwreck Island Waterpark.

Both locations have separate fees for those who just want to walk out on the pier ($3 per person), and those who’d like to fish from the pier ($6 per person).

Rod rentals, bait, and tackle are all available on-site for an additional cost.

The fish species most commonly caught include Cobia, King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Red fish, Blues, Blue liners, Pompano, and Flounder.

I n spite of inflation and fears of recession , Americans aren’t giving up their holiday travel dreams, according to a new survey from Vacasa. The latest data shows that 64% of Americans plan to travel more frequently this winter as compared to last year, with an average of five trips planned for the season.

However, vacationers are still budget-conscious when it comes to travel, the survey showed. For instance, more than 66% of respondents will be driving to their destination, with 34% making the shift from air travel to save money.

More than one-quarter (27%) said they are looking for special promotions, and an equal number said they plan to spend less money when they arrive at their destination. Eighty percent of travelers said they will be staying in the U.S. this winter.

Whether you’re looking to get away someplace warm this winter or hit the slopes in the Pacific Northwest, Vacasa spotlighted more than a dozen U.S. cities where you can find vacation rentals for less than $250 per night. Here are 12 with plenty to do and see!

Orlando, Florida

Typically a hot holiday destination for families who want to experience Christmas at Walt Disney World Resorts or Universal Studios Orlando, you might be surprised that you can find affordable vacation rentals all season long in this Central Florida city. Plus, you can avoid pricey theme park food and cook meals in your vacation home.

Pensacola, Florida

Nearly half the vacation cities on the Vacasa list are in Florida, and with good reason. Pensacola, Florida — the westernmost city in the Florida Panhandle — boasts temperate climates, miles of gorgeous Gulf Coast beaches, and holiday festivities from now through the new year.

Navarre, Florida

Just east of Pensacola, Navarre is a quiet beachfront community with tons of reasonably priced vacation rentals.
