Sandeman’s New Europe FREE Walking Tour: Paris

New Europe offers free walking tours all over Europe. They typically last between two to two and a half hours and are meant to be an introduction to the city.

I recently went on the New Europe Paris Tour. Here is my review of the tour and what you can expect if you go on one yourself.

“When I found out there was one in Paris, just days before my trip, I immediately signed up and was excited to go. For a student on a budget, a FREE tour is perfect.” 

Getting Started

From the minute you sign up, they make the experience enjoyable and customer friendly. They email you the ticket and give you the option to download it right to your phone; I added mine to my Apple Wallet. There’s no hassle of printing out a hard copy!

They also make the meeting point very clear and they say to look for someone either with a red umbrella or a red backpack. Finally, every tour guide has a red name tag that says New Europe on the lanyard.

The Paris tour is offered in both English and Spanish. I obviously picked the English tour group. The free tour runs every day, rain or shine. For my tour, our guide was named Harry. He was one of the best tour guides I’ve ever had. He was extremely energetic, fun, and knowledgeable. He told us that since this is a free tour he does not get paid, but this allows him to give whatever kind of tour he wants. He picks where we go, what information he tells us, etc. To me, that was the best part.

Harry took us to many famous spots in Paris including Notre Dame, the Palace of Justice, Assemblée Nationale, the Louvre and more. The one place I wish we had gone was the Eiffel Tower, however, I learned throughout my time in Paris that it is a little out of the way from all the other famous places.

At each stop on the tour, Harry would stop and explain the importance of that place itself and its historical relationship to Paris. I felt like I learned so much about Paris and France as a whole throughout this tour. It wasn’t like a boring history lecture, but rather someone telling me an exciting story.

After the tour ended, we had the opportunity to go with Harry to a nearby cafe where they sold discounted tickets to other tours in and around Paris. He also was willing to give everyone recommendations on places to eat, shop, etc. I tagged along and wound up signing up for another New Europe tour–a paid one–and a river cruise. Harry also gave me a recommendation for a restaurant for dinner and a place to get coffee.

How to Book

Even though it is a FREE walking tour you can still book your spot in advance on the  SANDEMAN’s New Europe Tours Website.  You can probably also just turn up at the meeting point but you may find that there is no availability. With limited time to spend in a city, it is better just to book!

Free & Latein Quarter Tour

Yesterday, I spent my leisure time in paris doing tours. First - of course - i looked for a cheap or free one and found Sandemans free guided tours (often a day, meeting spot: st. michel place, tips-based, 2:30h). Holly, a lovely woman from new Zealand, showed us paris. The tour was so informative - amazing! I strongly recommend the tour! afterwards, i took part in the latein quarter tour (guide: unfortunately i forgot his name he is from england and lived in rome too ) with his quirk manner he exudes a pleasant and amusing atmosphere. Slightly, less informative compared to the first tour. But still good, though! i really can recommend the tours! i prefer them over freetour.com

I've been to Paris several times but really felt I got to know the city on this tout. Ono was an excellent guide. Well worth doing!

The best way to have a quick look at the main "must see" places. Very interesting anecdotes about Paris and history of France. Highly recommend!

This is a prefect option to see Paris! All guides are very nice, the tours in spanish were very interesting a lot of fun, Sergio and Antonella gave us very useful tipps for our stay in Paris. MUST city free walking tour and montmatre tour!

This tour is great... but what made it different for us was the tour guide, she was super upbeat and keep us engaged with jokes and questions even though it was late and it was raining extremely hard. We all got soaking wet but nobody even thought about ditching the tour, and all that because of our tour guide Antonella, great job and thank you so much for such magical night. Este tour es genial. Pero la gran diferencia la hizo nuestro guia. Su energia y sus chistes nos mantuvieron a todos interesados en lo que tenia para contarnos. A pesar de que era de noche y estaba lloviend super fuerte. My friends and I started with the free walking tour in Paris with Inga Koller- an actress from Germany. She gave an AMAZING tour (2 hours) of main attractions in paris. So heartfelt and informational. I swear she is going to be very famous soon. She recommended we go to Versailles and here Holly Morley was our guide. Even though it rained throughout our walk in the gardens, the tour was so informational and interesting that i barely noticed the pouring rain. Finally, Inga also recommended her good friend Oliver Knightman who gives tours in the artistic Montmartre area. He is also an actor and super interesting. He gave such an amazing tour of the area and gave awesome recommendations. Would def recommend these 3 people 10/10. They were super interesting and nice - the type of people who make you wish you could stay longer to get to know them and meet more people.

Paris free walking tour

Sebastian was fantastic! He is very enthusiastic and animated and made the 3 hours very entertaining. A great way to get to know the city.

Enjoyable tour of Paris Central. The city is overwhelmingly big and this tour helped put sightings into context in 2.5 hours. My guide was Panama, and she had a lot of fascinating knowledge, tips, humour and energy. Highly recommended... especially if just spending a short time in this big awesome city.

We absolutely loved our time on the free walking tour led by the excellent Harry K! His passion, knowledge and interpretation of the history of Paris was a joy to experience, we left feeling educated and inspired (as well as super impressed at the depth of his knowledge!) and with many great ideas of where to go/what to see next in this beautiful city. Paris can definitely seem overwhelming and Harry gave a great overview alongside some lovely recommendations that helped us plan the rest of our time here. This is my 5th time in Paris but my first walking tour here and I would 100% suggest that anyone visiting the city make time to learn and explore this way. We loved how Harry shared his interpretation of various historical periods and events throughout the tour, linking them with our current international political climate and suggested the lessons we could take from said events. With a super guide such as Panama that we had for our Tour, the Montmartre walking tour is filled with history and present info that should be a must on a visit to Paris. From the Russian occupation to Moulin Rouge and to the Artists, Ms. Panama’s Tour was worthy of the time and cost.

Yes, I have, in 2016. It wasn't too bad, but the young guide did feel the need to mention that he worked only for tips about every 10 minutes.

Better tours are with the Paris Walks company. You pay, but the guides are very knowledgeable and interesting. No need to book, at least there didn't used to be.

I have done Sandemans free walking tours in a bunch of cities (Munich, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Barcelona, Paris) and have always enjoyed them. Paris was good, but towards the lower end simply because the tour was so crowded, so it's possible a paid company with a smaller group might offer something better.

You get what you pay for... Go in with low expectations

I felt like it was a waste of time. I knew more than the guide. I did tip but won't ever bother to take another one of these.

Free Walking Tour Paris

A fantastic, informative tour that ended up lasting 3 hours. Our tour guide, Amanda, was really helpful and was quick to answer any questions that we had about Paris, be it about the historical parts of Paris or about the best places to eat/drink, or also what not to eat! Though it's a free tour, it is made clear at the beginning that the tour guide is NOT paid, and I think it's unfair to join this tour without expecting to pay, as if not these tours will not be able to exist. We saw some of the most famous sites (Notre Dame, The Louvre, Eiffel Tower etc) and she told us tips such as the quickest way to get into the Louvre to avoid the queues. Though you don't go into any of the sites, it's nice to learn a bit about them then you can re-visit on your own. We also saw sights like the smallest street in Paris, which was indicative of how Paris used to be, and we told interesting stories about famous historical figures! When we arrived, there was a huge crowd of people and we were worried we wouldn't get onto the tour, but they quickly arranged the crowd into groups according to language, and in total there were 30 of us with one tour guide, which was a good number as we could all hear and see her. There was a toilet/food break for 15minutes, and whilst there was a lot of walking, there were lots of little breaks. I would definitely recommend doing this at the beginning of your stay, as we saw a number of places that we wanted to re-visit, and it made us appreciate the city a lot more! And I cannot recommend this tour enough - it was fantastic!!!

I've already joined the Sandemans Tour in Praha and Berlin and was great!! In Paris was really really good! As usual... they always show you the most important places and give you instructions on everything you might need!!

Just spent a few days in Paris, had never been before so decided to take in the Free Walking Tour with Sandemans. Wasnt really interested in learning too much about the city, so just went along to St Michel to check it out. Have to say it was honestly the best decision I made in Paris. The Tour was really interesting and not too long, took in all the main sites without exhausting our group. The Guide, Patrick, gave us a really good mix of trivia and history about the city and I def felt comfortable about exploring on my own the next day. Take the tour - its well worth it!

Over the years of my adventures in Europe I have been on the free walking tours in Berlin, Paris and Prague and had a fantastic and informative experience everytime. As I find myself back in Paris I decided on Friday 8th June to take the Montemartre tour this time and had no less a wonderful experience! Our guide Filipa was lovely, had a fun sense of humour and really knew her stuff! As a fan of several artists we learned about, I loved the small insight into their lives through Filipa's engaging storytelling. Looking forward to the bike tour and the free walking tour (again) over my last few days in Paris!
