Despite being on the island of Oahu, it’s possible to visit the moving memorials at Pearl Harbor on a day trip from Maui.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States wasn’t actively involved militarily in WWII. That day ultimately turned the tide of the war, but not in Japan’s favor. Today Pearl Harbor remains a major naval base for the US Pacific Fleet, while also hosting a National Memorial above the wreck of the USS Arizona, which was sunk during the attack, claiming the lives of 1,177 sailors and marines on board. The site, which is located outside of Honolulu on Hawaii’s Oahu island, can be explored on these three different day tours from Maui. All include round-trip flights to Honolulu.

Pearl Harbor and Mini Circle Island Tour from Maui

You’d be surprised how much of Oahu you can explore during a single day trip from Maui. This 14-hour trip visits Pearl Harbor National Memorial first, where you’ll have two and half hours to watch footage and learn all about that fateful day. Next, you’ll explore the tropical beauty of Kualoa Regional Park and take scenic drives along Oahu’s Windward Coast and northern shoreline. With round-trip airfare to Honolulu from Maui included and group sizes capped at 15 people, this option offers great value for money. From $459 per person.

Pearl Harbor Oahu Tour from Maui

Head straight to the Pearl Harbor Memorial after arriving in Oahu for a trip on a Navy boat to the wreck of the USS Arizona. Roughly half of the 2,341 US service members who died as a result of the attack were aboard the Arizona when she was hit. Now the ship sits beneath the water, partially covered by a white viewing platform. The rest of this tour’s itinerary is dedicated to unlocking the natural beauty of Oahu. During the island drive, you’ll stop at the Nuuanu Pali Lookout, which provides the quintessential tropical island vista. From $669 per person.

Day Trip from Maui to Oahu’s Pearl Harbor & Honolulu

A popular and well-established Oahu tour from Maui includes a guided tour of the USS Missouri battleship, aboard which the Japanese officially surrendered on September 2, 1945. After time spent exploring Pearl Harbor, you will head back towards Honolulu for a scenic city drive, with various stops along the way, including Kawaiaha’o Church and some time at the famed Waikiki Beach. If time and weather permit, you can also ascend Diamond Head Crater. You will then be taken back to the airport in time for your flight back to Maui. From $734 per person.

The walkway to the  Bowfin Submarine Museum  has an impressive display of naval weaponry. Similarly, the Bowfin ’s museum has scuba diving suits and other artifacts that are sure to impress. This tour is perhaps the most convenient, cost-effective, and efficient way to go from Maui to Pearl Harbor and experience a day that changed the world forever.

Know before you book:

  • We encourage visitors to not bring bags to Pearl Harbor. There is often a line to put your bag in storage and to retrieve it. Standing in this long line may prevent you from getting your tickets for the Arizona Memorial. That is a mistake that you do not want to make.
  • Children under 4 not being allowed to walk through the USS Bowfin Submarine and is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.
  • Baggage storage is available at Pearl Harbor for a small fee.
  • Tour buses do not permit guests to leave bags in the vehicle.

Maui to Pearl Harbor: The Most Complete Tour operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

How to Visit Pearl Harbor From Maui On Your Own — Tour Guide Not Needed

view of US flag against a blue sky with clouds

Looking for a worthwhile day trip from Maui? One of the most moving experiences we’ve had in Hawaii didn’t happen on Maui, but on Oahu — at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Getting there from Maui on your own makes for an easy and rewarding day trip, no hired tour guide necessary.

pearl harbour tours from maui

A visit to Pearl Harbor is a must-do if you can make it to Oahu. Standing at the historic site never fails to provide a sobering reminder of the sacrifice paid by so many to secure the freedoms we enjoy today in the U.S.

And it’s easy to get there from Maui. The historic sites at Pearl Harbor are just a short flight from Maui’s Kahului Airport. The Pearl Harbor Visitor’s Center is less than five miles from Honolulu International Airport.

Just remember: while you can visit Pearl Harbor’s visitor center (including the museum and grounds) without a ticket, you’ll need advance reservations to visit the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. You also need to purchase tickets for entry to other historic sites in the area.

Yes, you could book a commercial tour to visit Pearl Harbor, but visiting on your own isn’t hard — and it’ll save you some cash. Here’s how to visit Pearl Harbor without a tour group.

What to bring on your day trip to Pearl Harbor

pearl harbour tours from maui

Pearl Harbor attracts approximately 4,000 visitors each day, making it one of the top three most-visited tourist destinations in the state of Hawaii, according to the National Park Service. It’s most known as the site of the devastating December 7, 1941 attack on the U.S. military base by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. The attack precipitated U.S. involvement in WWII.

Located at the active military Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Pearl Harbor is also the largest natural harbor in the state of Hawaii.

According to the National Park Service, “the memorial is a place of remembrance and contemplation of the nature of war and the sacrifices of those who lost their lives during the Pacific War.”

Historic sites at Pearl Harbor

With the mention of Pearl Harbor, many tourists automatically think of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, and the shuttle boat to the remains of the fallen ship. Along with the moving U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, visitors to Pearl Harbor may access several World War II-era historic sites:

pearl harbour tours from maui

More than 80 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, visitors today may witness a somber vestige of the harrowing day — oil leaking from the remains of the U.S.S. Arizona. Sometimes referred to as “the black tears of the U.S.S. Arizona” the sight is a moving reminder of the lives lost during the Pearl Harbor attack.

To access the memorial, which was built above the U.S.S. Arizona’s resting place, guests must reserve a Navy-operated shuttle boat ticket up to 8 weeks in advance of a specific tour date.  (First-come-first-served ticketing has been discontinued.)

Limited standby tickets may be available as a same-day option, but availability isn’t guaranteed. Allot 45 minutes for the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial boat tour.

The deck of the famous “Mighty Mo” is where the Japanese officially surrendered at the end of WWII. The ship is the last of its kind — both the last American battleship ever built and the last to be decommissioned. Launched in 1944, she officially completed her service in 1999.

On board the U.S.S. Missouri, take a guided tour or explore on your own. Sit in the captain’s chair, get an up close look at the 50-caliber guns on deck, and explore the ship’s lower decks.

pearl harbour tours from maui

The Battleship Missouri Memorial is located on Ford Island, an active military installation. Access to the memorial is available via shuttle bus from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. Shuttles run every 15 minutes.

Step aboard a WWII-era attack submarine at the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum. Formerly known as the U.S. Bowfin and Submarine Museum and Park, the museum dedicated to the “Silent Service” is located adjacent to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

Admission includes museum entry, outdoor exhibits, and access to the WWII-era submarine U.S.S Bowfin. The Balao-class fleet attack submarine served in the Pacific during WWII. Nicknamed “The Pearl Harbor Avenger,” it launched on December 7, 1942 — one year to the day of the infamous Pearl Harbor attack.

The museum offers both self-guided tours and free audio guide tours. We recommend allotting 1.5 to 2 hours for visiting the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum.

Stand inside an 80,000 square foot WWII-era aviation hangar, still pierced with bullet holes from the December 7th attack, at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum .

The museum pays tribute to the aviation battlefield of WWII, where visitors can view the Ford Island control tower and air field, along with more than 50 aircraft and exhibits. Free audio tours are available.

Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum is located on Ford Island, an active military base. Visitors must take a shuttle from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center to gain access to the museum. We recommend allotting two hours for your visit to the Aviation Museum.

Ford Island bus tour: U.S.S. Oklahoma and U.S.S. Utah Memorials (advance reservation required)

Gain entry to two WWII memorials not typically accessible to the general public. Take a 90-minute motor coach tour from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center to Ford Island on an exclusive tour to see the U.S.S. Oklahoma and U.S.S. Utah Memorials .

At the U.S.S. Utah Memorial , remains of the fallen ship are visible at the spot where the ship sank. The battleship was hit by torpedoes during the December 7th attack in 1941. Fifty-eight of its crew were killed.

The U.S.S. Oklahoma Memorial commemorates the 429 lives lost on the ship during the Pearl Harbor attack. The ship itself was sold for scrap metal and hauled away. It sank in 1947 while en route to the West Coast.

Availability of this tour is extremely limited, with only 25 seats per tour. The National Park Service runs the ranger-led tour only once daily — at 3:15 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Tickets to the Ford Island bus tour are released online two weeks prior to the tour date via the Recreation.gov website.

How to get to to Pearl Harbor from Maui

There’s no public ferry service or bridge to get to Oahu, so flying into Honolulu’s airport is your best option. From there, take a car or public transportation to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, which is only about 3 miles (or a 15 to 30 minute drive depending on traffic) from the airport.

Tips for booking a flight from Maui to Oahu

The primary commercial air carriers that fly interisland from Maui’s Kahului Airport (OGG) to Oahu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) include:

  • Southwest Airlines
  • Hawaiian Airlines

When to book and fares

Based on our flight searches on each of these airlines, we found that you generally get the best deal if you book your flight in advance rather than at the last minute. Economy round trip rates from Maui to Honolulu in 2022 range between $70 to $140 round trip. Flight time between the islands is around 30 to 40 minutes one way.

Best flight times

When choosing a departure time, snag an early morning flight before 8:00 a.m. Not only will you avoid the long midday security lines when departing from Kahului Airport, but an early start lets you maximize your time on Oahu.

How to get to Pearl Harbor from the Honolulu airport

Getting to Oahu from Maui is the biggest step to getting to Pearl Harbor. The historic sites are only a short distance from the Honolulu airport. This is how you can get there:

  • Hail a rideshare. Use your preferred provider, such as Uber or Lyft. In our experience, costs typically range from $25 to $45 for a one-way trip, depending on current demand and driver availability.
  • Hire a taxi. According to Rome2Rio, a one-way taxi ride from Honolulu International Airport to Pearl Harbor costs between $19 to $23.
  • Catch the public bus. Known as TheBus , Oahu’s public bus system takes you straight to Pearl Harbor for just $3 one way. This makes TheBus appealing for both budget-minded and eco-conscious travelers. The 20 line bus route from Honolulu Airport runs every 20 minutes.
  • Rent a car. If you don’t plan on spending the entire day at Pearl Harbor and want flexibility to see other parts of Oahu, renting a car for the day is your best bet. Several car rental agencies reside on site at Honolulu’s airport , with complimentary shuttles from the baggage claim area.

pearl harbour tours from maui

The best thing about visiting Pearl Harbor without a tour is that you can control your day and make your own schedule. With a commercial tour group, this isn’t the case.

“[We] did a tour and we were stuck to their schedule. Never again,” says Tricia T. of the Facebook group Coming to Maui.

If you plan on touring all of the Pearl Harbor sights on your own, expect to spend a full day in the area.

Note: The order in which you visit each site will revolve around any timed reservations you have. For example, if you have an afternoon ticket to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, you can visit the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum in the morning.

Sample one-day itinerary

  • 7:00 a.m. Take an early flight from Maui’s OGG airport to Oahu’s HNL airport.
  • 7:45 a.m. Hail a driver and travel to the Pearl Harbor Memorial.
  • 8:15 a.m. Arrive at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.
  • 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 am. Tour the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum.
  • 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Explore the U.S.S. Arizona Visitor Center, grounds, and virtual reality center.
  • 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Take the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial tour (with 10 a.m. tour reservations).
  • 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Walk to Restaurant 604 for a lunch break.
  • 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Take the shuttle bus to the Battleship Missouri Memorial at Ford Island. Tour the “Mighty Mo.”
  • 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visit the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.
  • 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Hop onto the shuttle bus back to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. The last shuttle leaves at 5:00 p.m. from the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.
  • 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Finish any last minute photo ops or souvenir shopping before the Visitor Center closes at 5:00 p.m.
  • 5:00 p.m. Hail a rideshare to the airport and grab a bite to eat before boarding your flight back to Maui.

Admission Tickets and Passport to Pearl Harbor

pearl harbour tours from maui

You can purchase tickets to each Pearl Harbor site separately. This works best if you want to visit only a few of Pearl Harbor memorials and museums.

But if you plan on visiting all of the sites, we recommend buying the all-in-one Passport to Pearl Harbor ticket. You can save as much as $9.96 per adult, or $17.46 per child when you buy a Passport to Pearl Harbor.

Bear in mind that you may visit the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and its exhibits for free.

** Important: The Passport to Pearl Harbor does NOT include a reservation to visit the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. To access the shuttle boat ride to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, you must reserve tickets online through the National Park Service website . **

pearl harbour tours from maui

As an active military base, visitors to Pearl Harbor’s historic sites are subject to security screening. Bags and luggage that conceal contents are prohibited on the grounds.

We recommend that you either travel without a bag or carry your personal items in a clear bag (see below). If not, prepare to pay for locker storage at $6 and $10 per bag, depending on the bag’s size.

The National Park Service publishes a list of prohibited and allowable items when visiting Pearl Harbor .

We recommend that you bring the following items on your day trip to Pearl Harbor:

  • Clear stadium bag – Bag security is strictly enforced. If you don’t want to check your things into the onsite locker storage, you may carry your items into the memorial using a clear bag.
  • Valid ID – Pearl Harbor is an active military base, and you may need to provide proof of identification, such as at the Ford Island bus tour.
  • Spending money for lunch, sundries, and souvenirs.

pearl harbour tours from maui

  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen – Whether on the boat to the U.S.S. Arizona or strolling the outdoor memorial on shore, you’ll appreciate protection from the sun.
  • Snacks – While onsite shops sell snacks and sundries, you’ll save a little money bringing your own.

What to Consider Before Booking a Pearl Harbor Tour

Best Pearl Harbor Tours

Locations visited:

Pearl Harbor has four museums that you can visit, including the USS Arizona Memorial , the USS Bowfin Submarine , USS Battleship Missouri , and Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum . In addition, the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is near the boat dock for the USS Arizona Memorial and it is well worth spending time there.

Some tours will only cover one or two sights while others will cover all the museums. Read the details before booking so you’re not disappointed! Other tours will take you through parts of downtown Honolulu so you can see sights like Iolani Palace or the Punchbowl Cemetery, though these are quick stops for photos and not full tours.

Tours that cover more of the historic sites are longer and cost more.

Size of group:

We often get asked why tour prices can vary so significantly and the answer is usually dependent on the size of the group. The less expensive tours usually have a lot more people on them. That doesn’t mean they’re bad! But they do tend to move a little slower and be a little less flexible.

Pickup locations:

Not all tours will pick up from your hotel or vacation rental. Some of the larger tour buses will pick up at set locations throughout Waikiki. Airport pickups are rare unless you have specifically booked a tour from a neighbor island ( like this tour ).

Tour guide restrictions:

Your tour guide will not accompany you to the USS Arizona Memorial as they are prohibited from doing so. This can be a disappointment to people hoping for a full guided tour. In our experience, the best guides will give you history and information while they are driving you and during short tours at the beginning of visiting each museum. Then, you’re on your own to explore, listen, and learn.

I highly recommend the audio tour of the USS Bowfin Submarine and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. At the USS Missouri there was a tour guide on deck to answer all of our questions.

A Big Note About USS Arizona Memorial Tickets

One of the main reasons that people book tours is because they want to gain entrance to the USS Arizona Memorial . Unfortunately, booking a tour does not guarantee that you’ll get a ticket to see the memorial. There is a high probability that you’ll get one, but it’s not 100% guaranteed.

Here’s why: only a set number of tickets are released in advance for the USS Arizona. Tour companies do their absolute best to secure tickets (and they are good at doing so), but there might be some instances where they miss out. It can be a huge bummer, especially if your entire reason for visiting Pearl Harbor is to visit the memorial.

In addition, visiting the memorial requires a short boat ride. There are times when repair work is on the dock and no boat tours are running out to the USS Arizona Memorial. When that happens, you won’t be able to visit the memorial but all of the other museums and sights are still open and available to visit.

On a personal note, the memorial is incredibly moving but I found visiting all of Pearl Harbor to be fascinating. While I would definitely be disappointed to not see the memorial, there is so much to do, see, and learn there that I still think it is worth visiting without seeing the USS Arizona memorial.

Best Full Pearl Harbor Tour

While most visitors head to Pearl Harbor to pay their respects at the USS Arizona Memorial, there is a lot more to do and see. I get it — the first time I visited Pearl Harbor I saw the memorial, looked at a bit of information at the museum and headed home.

What a mistake! When I finally went back and visited the other museums I was captivated. Climb through the Bowfin Submarine, walk the decks of the Battleship Missouri (Mighty Mo), and take in the aviation history at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.

Hawaii tours.

If you’re staying on another island, you can absolutely do a day trip to visit Pearl Harbor. We did this tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. You can see a video of our experience above. Everything was taken care of and the day was incredibly smooth and easy. What an awesome way to visit for a day!

  • Pickup: from the Honolulu airport
  • Tour length: 9 hours, not including flight time
  • Adult price: from $500 per person (includes airfare and airport pickup)

Do You Need to Take a Tour to Pearl Harbor?

Absolutely not. I’ve both visited on my own and taken a guided tour. While I did get significantly more from the guided tour (our tour guide was excellent, as most of them are), if you are not interested in having someone drive you around and provide you with historical facts, you can absolutely visit on your own.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor on your own

If you are planning to visit on your own, there are a few things you need to know for a successful trip:

  • USS Arizona Memorial tickets must be reserved in advance. You can book them for $1 at the official website . Tickets can be booked 8 weeks in advance. If the date you want to visit is sold out, you’re not out of luck! They release additional tickets 24 hours in advance. You can get more information on when tickets are released here . If you can’t get tickets, you can try your luck by joining a standby line and waiting for availability on the boat to the memorial.
  • A shuttle to Ford island is required. If you want to visit Battleship Missouri and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, you will need to take a free shuttle to Ford Island. The shuttle leaves regularly and is easy to take. You’ll find it at the end near the USS Bowfin Submarine museum.
  • Bags are not allowed into Pearl Harbor and can either be left in your car or you can pay for bag storage.
  • Passport to Pearl Harbor ticket: if you plan to visit all of the Museums, consider getting the Passport to Pearl Harbor ticket. This provides entrance to all of the museums but it does not include a USS Arizona Memorial reservation.

Pearl Harbor from Maui

pearl harbour tours from maui

No trip to Hawaii would be complete without seeing the state’s most popular and historically important attraction … the USS Arizona Memorial . The documentary film that is shown at the Visitor’s Center sets a somber and reflective tone which this sacred place deserves. People walk out to the ferry boat in hushed silence for the short ride out to the Memorial. If you have never visited Pearl Harbor, you really should go.

Visiting Pearl Harbor from Maui requires an inter-island flight to Honolulu and MUST be arranged in advance . The Arizona Memorial is the most popular visitor destination in the state of Hawaii, and space on the ferry ride out to the Arizona Memorial is limited. It is not uncommon for all available tickets for the day to be handed out by 9am or earlier during busy travel periods. This puts guests who are just flying in from other islands at a huge disadvantage UNLESS YOU HAVE RESERVED A GUIDED TOUR IN ADVANCE!!! For this reason we HIGHLY recommend one of these guided tour packages as the Arizona Memorial tickets and airlines reservations and transportation from the Honolulu airport to Pearl Harbor and back are handled for you to make the day "hassle-free."

  • All flights are from the main airport in Kahului, which is centrally located on Maui.
  • Guests are on their own to get TO and FROM their resort accommodations to the Kahului Airport.
  • Flights are provided on either Hawaiian Airlines or Southwest Airlines on modern jets that seat approximately 120.
  • Morning flight departure times for most of these tours are between 6am and 7am.
  • You will meet your tour guide and other tour participants when you arrive at Honolulu Airport.
  • Backpacks, bags, and larger purses are not allowed at Pearl Harbor sites; a storage facility is available for these items for a small fee.
  • Dress comfortably in casual but respectful attire keeping in mind the Arizona Memorial is the final restingplace of 1100 USA soldiers.
  • Lunch is not included in the price of these tours. Food is available to purchase on most tours or you might consider packing your own lunch and snacks. Lunch options are very limited on the "Pearl Harbor / Honolulu City Tour" as the only option here is the Arizona Memorial Visitor's Center Snack Shop.
  • Return flight time will vary with the tour ... most are between 5pm and 7pm.
  • Exact flight schedules vary from day to day. Your flight numbers and exact departure times will be in your final email confirmation.
  • Reservations made for these interisland packages are charged at the time your tour is confirmed and due to airline rules they are non-cancellable, non-refundable, and non-transferable. Any date changes will incur significant change fees.
  • These Pearl Harbor tours are suitable for most guests who are in good enough health to be able to walk about four city blocks.
  • Infants are permitted on tour, but the age for "free infants" is the same as airfare regulations; children under 2 are free in lap.

$339.99 per Adult, $339.99 per Child (2-11) (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

Following your flight from Maui to Honolulu, your tour guide will pick you up at the Honolulu Airport and your tour group will first go to Pearl Harbor Visitor's Center. Learn about the history of Pearl Harbor and see artifacts and displays in the museum. When it is your group's turn to visit the memorial you will first watch a documentary film that sets the stage for the somber experience of visiting the memorial. You will board a Navy shuttle boat for the short ride out to the Arizona Memorial. At the conclusion of your Pearl Harbor experience your group will drive through downtown Honolulu to view historic buildings and locations like Iolani Palace, the King Kamehameha Statue, and the Hawaii State Capitol building. Later in the afternoon you will have free time to shop in Waikiki while you await your ride back to the Honolulu Airport and your return flight to Maui. This tour is offered daily

$459.99 per Adult, $449.99 per Child (2-11) (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

Your day starts the same as the Pearl Harbor / City tour, but you will spend a LOT more time at Pearl Harbor. Added to this itinerary is a visit to the USS Oklahoma Memorial, and then onto the decks of the USS Missouri Battleship, the "Mighty Mo." Witness its awesome main deck guns capable of firing shells for 20 miles. You'll also tour through parts of the crew area of the ship, and see the famous "Surrender Deck" ... the spot on board the ship where the document was signed between the USA and Japan to formally end WWII while the Missouri was located in Tokyo Bay. After Peark Harbor your tour group will proceed through downtown Honolulu for a driving tour, viewing historic locations described in the Pearl Harbor / Honolulu City Tour. This tour is offered Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday

This is the most comprehensive and diverse of the Pearl Harbor tours. It is similar to the itinerary of the Battleships tour ... the same tour of Arizona Memorial and the USS Missouri, but instead of visiting the Oklahoma Memorial your tour will include the Pacific Aviation Museum with its displays of WWII aircraft. You will also walk through the USS Bowfin Submarine, getting a unique perspective of life in a WWII era submarine! This tour also includes the drive through historic downtown Honolulu. This tour is offered Sunday, Wednesday, and Saturday

For those who just want to see the Arizona Memorial and do some sightseeing around the island of Oahu afterward, this is the tour for you! After your Pearl Harbor experience in the morning, you will stop at the Dole Pineapple Plantation in the plains of Central Oahu. Then onward to the North Shore as you pass surfing beaches, Makapuu and Pali Overlooks, the Halona Blowhole, Sandy Beach, Diamond Head, and the idyllic and spectacular Byodoin Temple. This tour is offered Monday through Saturday

$479.99 per Adult, $469.99 per Child (2-11) (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

Visit the two most popular attractions on Oahu in one day from the island of Maui, with a stop at the picturesque Dole Pineapple Plantation in between! This tour starts just like the others, with the visit to the Pearl Harbor Visitor's Center and the Arizona Memorial experience. In the afternoon take in the scenery on the drive the the Polynesian Cultural Center, where you will witness colorful, unique and diverse cultures of Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, and New Zealand. Enter a world of Pacific traditions, featuring interactive exhibits at the islands of ancient Polynesia. This tour is offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday

Cancellation and Refund Policy for Interisland Tours

ALL ONE-DAY TOURS involving airfare are non-cancellable, non-refundable, and non-transferable. All sales are final. Date changes MAY be possible, but will incur significant airline change fees and payment for any difference in airfare cost. Due to the expense associated with changing dates, it is best to consider this event completely "set in stone" once your reservation is confirmed. We recommend that you purchase a travel insurance policy that reimburses you for the cost of tours that you unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances.

TOUR DETAILS LISTED FOR EACH EVENT represent the itinerary that is followed on the vast majority of dates. Not all tours are perfect; due to weather, mechanical failure, or other unforseen factors, some features on your tour may not be available on your particular date. In the event a feature of your tour is not available, the tour operator will adjust your itinerary and substitute alternate sites and experiences ... and provide the best experience possible on your date. The tour operator does not offer partial refunds of any sort due to aspects of the tour changing due to circumstamnces that are out of their control. This includes days when the Navy is unable to operate the shuttle boats to the Arizona Memorial due to high winds ... or equipment or dock issues prevent them from running at normal capacity.

PRICES LISTED ARE THE NORMAL RATES for most dates based upon reserving the tour well in advance of your vacation. If you wait until the last minute to reserve one of these tours, it is possible that the only remaining seats on the insterisland flights could add a premium fee for additional airfare cost. We do not know what this cost is until your tour date is finalized. If there is going to be an increase in the airfare cost on your date, we will contact you prior to any additional charges being made, and you may elect to keep the reservation at the higher rate or cancel the reservation request at no coast to you.

ACTIVITY TIPS

Kevin at Falls

While it does take a little bit of effort to get there from Maui, if you've never been to Hawaii before you really should see Pearl Harbor. It is open seven days a week ... every day of the year except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. And while technically open on December 7th, there are always so many ceremonial events going on that it makes it difficult to have a "normal" experience at Pearl Harbor on that date. We also recommend that you avoid Friday as this is the busiest day of the week at Pearl Harbor ... this is the day that many people who are doing the weekly interisland cruise on the Pride of America visit Pearl Harbor.

The Arizona Memorial is the most popular visitor destination in Hawaii with over 1 million annual guests. It is truly a moving experience to stand on the memorial and look down at the outline of the sunken hull and realize that this ship is the final resting place for over 1,100 sailors who were killed on December 7, 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbor. With this many visitors per year, it is not uncommon to have all of the 4500 or so tickets for the day fully allotted by 9am or earlier.

One photography tip for you while you are visiting the Arizona Memorial ... when you are re-boarding the boat for the return to shore, try to get in the last row. As the boat pulls away from the Arizona you will get a dramatic photo.

Which tour to do? Well, the least expensive option is the "Pearl Harbor / Honolulu City Tour" and is a good choice for those who want to see the Arizona Memorial but are somewhat budget conscious. This tour only visits the Arizona Memorial and Pearl Harbor Visitor's Center though. My highest recommendation is to do one of the tours that also visits the Battleship Missouri ... walking the decks gives you a perspective on what the USS Arizona looked like prior to its sinking. My first choice for a Pearl Harbor tour would be the "Complete Pearl Harbor" ... I really like the experience of walking through the Bowfin Submarine and seeing how tight the living quarters was for the crew! If the Complete tour is not available on your date, consider also the Battleships tour ... this one includes the same tour of the Mighty Mo as the Complete tour.

Finally, for those who just want to see the Arizona Memorial but want to spend the majority of the day sightseeing, I would recommend the Pearl Harbor / Mini Circle Tour over the one that visits the Polynesian Cultural Center. More sightseeing stops are made on the Mini Circle tour, including the spectacular Byodoin Temple.

With the guided tour options you still are "on your own" to get to the Kahului Airport. After your flight to Oahu you will meet up with your tour guide just outside of baggage claim at the Honolulu Airport. And at the conclusion of your day your guide will drop you off at Waikiki for some free time and then a shuttle will pick you up to take you to the Honolulu Airport for your return flight to Maui. While airfare is included with these guided tour packages, any issues with cancellations are the responsibility of the airline and not the tour operator.

It is important to realize that with any of these guided tour options the list of sites and attractions that are included with the tour is the typical itinerary that is done on the vast majority of tours. Not all days are perfect. The tour operator is not able to do partial refunds if something on that list isn't available due to circumstances beyond the tour operator's control. If a mechanical issue with Hawaiian Airlines delays your flight to Oahu by an hour, that means that your day of sightseeing is going to be an hour shorter. Either less time will be spent at each stop, or one stop will be dropped in favor of quality time at the other sites. If a traffic accident closes the road to Sunset Beach and your Oahu Circle Island tour needs to be rerouted, you aren't going to get compensated for not being able to see North Shore Surfing Beaches. If your morning flight to Oahu is delayed so long that the tour operator doesn't feel they have sufficient time to give you a quality tour, they will cancel the event and you will receive a complete refund. But no partial refunds are done for tours that are less than "perfect" if those circumstances are outside of the tour operator's control.

The two most important things you need to understand about Pearl Harbor...

1. You MUST plan it right away. The longer you wait the cost of flights can only go UP and your chances of seeing the Arizona Memorial can only go DOWN.

2. Once you have reserved your package involving interisland airfare you should consider it "set in stone." Due to interisland flight restrictions your event cannot be cancelled or refunded (unless the airline cancels due to weather or mechanical issues, etc). And while date changes may be possible, significant airline change fees will likely make any date change "cost prohibitive."

By Shannon Wianecki Photographs by Michelle Mishina Kunz

Shannon Wianecki grew up in Hawaii and writes about the islands regularly.

Maui is the Goldilocks island: It is neither too big nor too small, and for its three million annual visitors, its perfect year-round temperature, rainbow-splashed volcanic summits and sugary beaches are just right. But last August, Maui’s equilibrium met disaster. Catastrophic wildfires reduced the historic town of Lahaina to ash, claiming more than 100 lives . Conflicting messages urged visitors to stay away and let the island heal, but also to come and help sustain the economy. Eight months later, the message is more unified that Maui is ready to greet tourists again. Housing remains a critical need for displaced residents. Lahaina will take years to rebuild. But Maui’s inherent beauty and hospitality remain as vibrant as ever. It’s a great time to explore Central and South Maui, where new cocktail bars, outrigger canoe tours and Indigenous art exhibits reveal the community’s creativity and resilience.

Recommendations

  • The 10,000-foot summit of Haleakalā National Park (pronounced with an emphasis on “la”) has a view of the rising sun, volcanic vistas and some of the planet’s rarest plants and birds.
  • The Hale Hō‘ike‘ike museum showcases Hawaiian artwork, carved deities and a redwood plank surfboard owned by the legendary swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku.
  • Balai Pata is a new restaurant that celebrates Filipino flavors with savory soups, desserts big enough for two and monthly karaoke nights.
  • The Wailea Beach Path meanders along South Maui’s photogenic coast between posh resorts and the deep blue Pacific.
  • The hiking trails at ‘Īao Valley State Monument (pronounced EE-ow) penetrate the lush West Maui Mountains, winding past waterfalls and taro patches.
  • Enormous murals by Small Town Big Art , a public art project, in colorful and historic Wailuku town, are worth taking a stroll to see, and they’re navigable by an online map.
  • Blue Water Rafting ’s exhilarating tours of the Kanaio Coast explore hidden coves, sea caves and charismatic marine life.
  • Ho‘okipa Beach Park , one of the world’s top surf spots, is also a great place to spy on napping sea turtles.
  • Oao Sushi Bar & Grill offers beautifully prepared Japanese fare, such as inventive sushi rolls and purple-yam pot de crème, in a Wailea shopping center.
  • Tikehau Lounge serves seasonal craft cocktails made with local spirits and garnished with tiny katana swords and surfboards.
  • Kaohu Store is a mom-and-pop grocery that produces the island’s best poke, raw fish mixed with traditional seasonings such as ground kukui nuts and seaweed.
  • Tails Up Maui , a partnership between a local chef and a fisherman, serves excellent fish sandwiches and chicken plates.
  • Wailuku Coffee Co. is the place to stop for Maui-grown coffee or espresso while exploring Wailuku.
  • Esters Fair Prospect , a charming tropical bar on Wailuku’s Main Street, serves daiquiris made with a choice of three dozen rums and appetizers featuring fresh marlin.
  • Mama’s Fish House , a celebrated restaurant on a secluded lagoon, lists the names of the fishermen who caught the snapper and octopus on its menu.
  • On Saturday mornings, the Upcountry Farmers Market is a miniature street fair with live music and vendors offering a bounty of Maui-grown produce and prepared foods.
  • ‘Oko‘a Farm Store sells a cornucopia of organic tropical fruits and vegetables in fresh, dried and powdered form.
  • T. Komoda Store and Bakery , which has served the Maui community for more than a century, sells out of its cream puffs and butter rolls daily.
  • Sabado Art Gallery is where the local artist Philip Sabado paints, teaches workshops and sells his color-saturated impressions of Maui landscapes and hula dancers.
  • Native Intelligence offers a wealth of Hawaiian art and fashion: Locals come here for Aloha shirts and sarongs, fine jewelry and fresh flower leis.
  • Four Seasons Resort Maui sets the standard for service with poolside spritzes, immaculate housekeeping and a terrific complimentary kids’ camp. Guests can book spa treatments in oceanfront huts and outrigger canoe excursions that launch from the resort’s adjoining beach. Rooms start at $1,095 a night.
  • Hotel Wailea is an adults-only boutique hotel on a hill overlooking South Maui. While not directly on the beach, it’s only a short shuttle ride away. Elegant suites are spacious (750 square feet with kitchenettes) and the Birdcage lounge is a prime spot for toasting the sunset. Rooms start at $799.
  • Maui Kamaole is a condo complex across the street from Kama‘ole Beach Park III, between Wailea and Kihei on Maui’s south shore. One- and two-bedroom units feature full kitchens, laundry facilities and lush landscaping. Rooms start at $500.
  • Since the recent fire intensified the housing shortage, visitors should avoid short-term rentals in residential areas. Instead, book hotels that offer in-room kitchens, such as Fairmont Kea Lani or Mana Kai Maui .
  • The best way to explore the island is by car . The major rental companies each have kiosks at Kahului Airport. Taxis and ride-hailing services are available, but long distances between destinations make this an expensive option. Maui’s public transit is limited. The Maui Bus operates 12 routes, including two that stop at the airport. One-way fares cost $2; day passes are $4.

People stroll along a paved pedestrian path that is flanked with manicured grass. Palm trees grow on one side of the path, and the ocean is visible on the other.

Wailea Beach Path

The Wailea Beach Path , which meanders along the island’s southern coast, reflects Maui’s almost contradictory personas: On one side, opulent resorts flaunt swim-up bars and nightly torch-lighting ceremonies. A subtler drama unfolds on the opposite side, where native flora like honey-scented naio bushes, spiky hala trees and hibiscus blossoms flourish along the rocky shoreline. Sit and listen to the sea rush through the lava rocks as the sun drops between three islands: Lanai, Kahoolawe and tiny Molokini. In the 1970s, nine Native Hawaiians occupied Kahoolawe in defiance of the U.S. military, which had been using the island as a bombing range for decades. Their daring protest sparked what is now known as the Hawaiian Renaissance — a revival of Indigenous culture that continues today.

Head to Oao Sushi Bar & Grill in the Wailea area for beautifully prepared Japanese fare. The owner and head chef, J.R. Oao, sharpened his knife at Maui’s best sushi bars (including a stint at Nobu Lana‘i) before opening his first brick-and-mortar restaurant last year (he also has a food truck in Kihei, a few miles north). His signature rolls are balanced and inventive: Try the baked California roll ($22), served hot and loaded with shrimp and scallops. Juicy seared lamb chops rest on a smear of umami-rich red miso ($42). Even the salads impress — bright cilantro vinaigrette with a hint of horseradish enlivens a simple mix of Maui-grown greens, roasted corn and goat cheese ($16). For dessert, the ube pot de crème ($14), made from purple yam, is luscious, light and almost cartoonishly bright.

A person wearing an apron and a baseball hat holds a cocktail shaker with two hands behind a bar counter.

The name of Tikehau , a new lounge in Wailea, means “peaceful landing.” The bar, which opened in November and is quietly raising the standard for craft cocktails statewide, was true to its name for Mari Howe, its manager, and other staff who came to work here after losing jobs or homes to the Lahaina fire. Everything is thoughtfully selected, from the gold-leaf wallpaper to the crystal stemware. Garnishes are coveted souvenirs; a tiny surfboard floats atop the Thousand Peaks ($19) — a lagoon-blue Paloma topped with jasmine-tea “sea foam.” The Hawaiian Samurai ($50), a top-shelf-whiskey libation, comes with a miniature katana sword. Ms. Howe’s seasonal menu incorporates local spirits and mixers: fresh pineapple juice, Kō Hana rum and okolehao, a moonshine made from Hawaiian ti plants. Upscale snacks include poisson cru, a raw-fish dish ($25), and smoked taro hummus ($15).

Explore the rugged Kanaio Coast’s hidden coves and sea caves with a rafting tour.

A person looks the sun's rays rising over the crest of a mountain. The clouds appear below the sun, indicating the person is at a high summit.

This morning mission requires preparation. First, book a sunrise reservation at Haleakalā National Park well in advance ($1 permit, $30 park entrance). Then pack really warm clothes. In the darkness, drive slowly up the 10,000-foot volcano; fog often obscures cattle and native geese loitering in hairpin turns. Your efforts will be rewarded at the peak — first by the velvet sky awash with stars, then by the sun’s rays spilling across the fire-forged mountain. Notice how the silverswords (hedgehog-like plants that grow only here) sparkle in the golden light. As you descend, stop at Hosmer Grove , where a short hike leads to a forest full of Hawaiian honeycreepers , birds that are among some of the planet’s rarest.

Midway down Haleakalā, stop at the Upcountry Farmers Market . Every Saturday morning, the Kulamalu Town Center parking lot turns into a miniature street fair with live music and vendors offering a dizzying array of Maui-grown produce and prepared foods. You’ll find things to eat immediately — fresh coconut, vegan sweet-potato cheesecake and Venezuelan arepas — as well as things to stash in your suitcase, like passion-fruit butter and macadamia nuts. Don’t miss the ‘Oko‘a Farm Store , which migrated from the market into an adjacent storefront. The store’s 46-acre farm supplies a cornucopia of tropical fruits and vegetables; its shelves teem with jars of pickled, powdered, and freeze-dried treats and tonics.

A moving car, which is blurred in the photograph, makes its way along a two-lane road during the daytime. No buildings are visible, just trees, shrubbery and power lines.

Baldwin Avenue

Take the scenic drive back to sea level through historic Makawao and Paia towns. Bordered by a rodeo arena and a polo field , Makawao is the charming headquarters of the paniolo, Hawaiian cowboys who continue to rope and ride across the island’s lush ranchlands. On the corner of Makawao and Baldwin Avenues you’ll see T. Komoda Store and Bakery ; this beloved family-run business, which has served the community since 1916, sells out of its cream puffs and butter rolls daily. Follow Baldwin past the defunct sugar mill to Paia. Once a busy sugar plantation hub surrounded by green cane fields, it’s now home to surfers and artists. As you pass Baldwin Beach, admire the view of the rain-carved West Maui Mountains. The morning light often reveals the hidden interior of ‘Īao Valley, your next destination.

The view of a creek, with white water rushing over beds of rocks. A lush, green mountain rises in the background.

Wailuku River

Head to Kaohu Store in Wailuku for lunch to go. This mom-and-pop grocery offers the island’s best poke — raw fish mixed with traditional seasonings such as ground kukui nuts and seaweed (from $18 a pound). Add two scoops of rice and crunchy fern salad for a truly local meal. If you prefer a cooked lunch, visit Tails Up Maui for a classy fish sandwich ($19) or mochiko (rice flour) fried chicken ($17). Take your picnic to Kepaniwai Park , where model houses commemorate the diverse cultures of Hawaii’s sugar plantation era, and dip your feet into the Wailuku River. Continue to ‘ Īao Valley State Monument (out-of-state visitors need reservations; $5 entrance fee, $10 parking). Paved walkways wind through a traditional lo‘i kalo (taro patch), past multiple waterfalls and up to a stunning lookout.

Peruse the art and artifacts at Hale Hō‘ike‘ike , a captivating repository of Hawaiian culture in the former home of the missionary-artist Edward Bailey. Exhibits showcase Hawaiian feather work and quilts, carved deities, and paintings depicting 19th-century Maui. Imagine trying to paddle the legendary swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku’s redwood plank surfboard into the waves (entry, $10). From there, stroll through Wailuku, Maui’s somewhat sleepy seat of local government. Narrow side streets yield many treasures: See enormous street murals (use the online map by Small Town Big Art , a public art project), admire the color-saturated paintings at Sabado Art Gallery and find refreshment at Wailuku Coffee Co. or Esters Fair Prospect , a cocktail bar. After shopping for Hawaiian books and clothing at Native Intelligence , buy yourself a fragrant flower lei to wear for the duration of your trip.

Two people sit on a red-painted wooden bench in a restaurant dining on a variety of dishes.

At Balai Pata , a new Filipino restaurant in Kahului, a celebration of the flavors that the chef and owner Joey Macadangdang grew up with is a welcome addition to Maui’s restaurant scene. Plump Kauai prawns sauteed in garlicky fish sauce ($17) set the stage for savory sinigang ($30) — tamarind broth loaded with long beans, okra and fish. For dessert, two can share the halo-halo ($18) — crushed ice topped with avocado, ube ice cream, coconut cream and fruit jellies, served in a coconut shell. The décor reflects a bright, homespun aesthetic, and once a month, local families fill the restaurant for late-night happy hour and karaoke battles — check Instagram for dates.

A child jumps from a rock into a small natural pool during the daytime.

Jumping into a pool in Kepaniwai Park.

A shirtless person wearing shorts sits on the side of an inflatable raft that is floating in the water during the daytime.

Blue Water Rafting

A trip to Maui isn’t complete without ducking underwater to spy on clouds of striped manini fish, eagle rays and turtles. While most snorkel tours start at Mā‘alaea Harbor, Blue Water Rafting boards at the Kihei boat ramp — offering easier access and one of the only tours of Kanaio Coast’s hidden coves and sea caves ($179, four hours). Climb into the rigid-hulled raft beside two dozen other passengers (fewer than the big tour boats) and watch for dolphins. In winter, close encounters with whales are common. As you peer into the pristine bay formed by Maui’s youngest lava flow, imagine the Polynesian wayfinders sailing here centuries ago, followed by the French explorer La Pérouse in 1786. The ride is exhilarating but bumpy.

Don’t be shy: Wear your flower lei to lunch at Mama’s Fish House . Old-style hospitality reigns at this celebrated restaurant on a sheltered lagoon. Servers greet you in vintage Aloha wear and offer complimentary bowls of poi (pounded taro — a staple of the traditional Hawaiian diet). The menu is pricey but worthy; long before it was fashionable, Mama’s listed who caught each fish and where. A recent menu featured sea bass hooked by Ivan Ventura in Hana ($68). If you ordered only dessert, you’d still leave happy; the Polynesian Black Pearl ($24) is an edible version of “The Birth of Venus”: chocolate mousse and passion fruit ensconced in a cookie seashell. Tables can book up a year out. After lunch, drive two minutes east to Ho‘okipa Beach Park , where surfers carve waves and sea turtles bask on the sand.
