In the Bag: Jeff Maggert

We delve into the PING staff player's bag following his Champions Tour debut victory

ping tour staff players

PING staff player Jeff Maggert became the 17th player in Champions Tour history to win in his debut at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic on Sunday.

The 50-year-old American, with three PGA Tour titles to his name including the 1999 WGC-Matchplay, carded a final-round 68 to capture his first title since the 2006 St Jude Classic.

Maggert fell into a tie for the lead with Billy Andrade after making bogey on the 16th but responded with an astonishing 50-foot putt to take the lead.

''I was just trying to hit an easy lag putt,'' said Maggert, who went on to clinch a two-shot victory. ''I wanted an easy tap-in for par and it was just one of those things – the ball found the hole.''

The PING loyalist trusted the PING G25 driver, fairway and hybrid, new S55 irons, Gorge Tour wedges and Anser Milled putter.

‘It’s a joke’: How this tour pro stumbled upon a rare driver build

Ping's Alta CB 55S driver shaft first made an appearance when Phillips was on the Texas A&M golf team.

Getty Images

Chandler Phillips made a driver shaft change last week at the Valspar Championship . It would’ve flown completely under the radar had it not been for the man himself, who dropped a bit of gear intel at the end of a question about the extent of his rookie season through the first three months.

The answer started with a recent putter swap and flowed right into some recent driver issues that led to the shaft change. Only this wasn’t any shaft change. After missing out on making the Players Championship field, Phillips went home and “started trying different stuff” to get the driver back on the rails. It didn’t take him long to throw the “old trusty shaft” in his 10-degree Ping G430 LST .

“It’s honestly a joke what it is,” he explained after the second round of the Valspar.

PING G430 Max 10K Custom Driver

A joke, huh? This wasn’t Phillips’ way of dunking on his own gear, but rather pointing out that he uses a rare driver setup. In fact, Ping Tour rep Kenton Oates confirmed to GOLF.com that Phillips is the only one playing this particular driver shaft on the PGA Tour.

“It’s just a stock Ping [Alta CB] shaft,” Phillips continued. “It’s 55 grams stiff. It’s not tipped. It’s a joke. I don’t know how it works.”

Take a peek at the driver shafts flexes on Tour and you’ll find plenty of extra-stiff (X) and tour extra-stiff (TX) offerings. Most are usually tipped at least half an inch to bolster the profile. Rarely do you see a tour pro using something untipped in the stiff category.

chandler phillips ping driver

Even more interesting is the Alta CB 55S shaft is geared for swing speeds between 90-100 mph and just happens to be a retail offering found in Ping’s off-the-rack build.

Phillips, who currently averages 111.85 mph club head speed (about 4 mph below the Tour average), came across the shaft during his time on the golf team at Texas A&M. Ping player development manager Jeff Brown confirmed Phillips was under-spinning the ball at the time but hadn’t considered the Alta CB — a counterbalanced profile — until he “stumbled upon it” on the A&M range.

“I was actually just jacking around on the range one day, and it’s so embarrassing, but one of the girls on the golf team — and I still practice at A&M — her bag was out there, we were just hanging out, and I grabbed her driver [with an Alta CB shaft] and I hit it and I was like, No, that’s a fluke,” he said.

Except it wasn’t a fluke. Phillips teed up five more to verify the results were legitimate — and they were. Phillips’ spin rate quickly moved into a more reasonable range of 2,000-2,200 RPMs, with ball speed and carry distance seeing a noticeable uptick as well.

“I hit ’em the exact same,” he said. “And I ordered it, and I think I played the shaft for two and a half years. Then I think I did a little premature getting it out of the bag, because I was kind of hitting everything bad, and I think it was more me, not the shaft.”

Thanks to a member of the women’s team at A&M, Phillips is back on track off the tee following a T3 finish at the Valspar, his best to date since he earned his Tour card. Not bad for a stiff-flex “joke” shaft that comes stock in a Ping driver.

I have played ping clubs exclusively in the past. Not currently but am feeling the pull back to them again. They seem to be one of the more widely respected companies on golfwrx, not just for performance but also reputation. My question is why don't you see as many tour players and, in particular, more of the top players with Ping deals? Is it the company being selective or not wanting to spend as much money on tour sponsorships? Or is it that there equipment doesn't appeal to as many of the top players? When I look on the websites of the Callaway, Titleist, Taylormade they seem to have the lion's share of players. I guess the obvious answer would be that they don't want to spend as much as the others but I just wondered if there was any other reason.

As an example, I have always gotten along well with Ping drivers. Yet, of players with mixed bags on tour, it seems you rarely see one who is using a Ping driver. I did see that Aaron Baddeley was doing just that but it seems rare.

Other brands have more money to throw (or are more willing to throw) money at sponsorship.

As for the lack of Ping drivers in non-ping staffers bags, it could be a two way street. Ping might not want their bats in the bags of those not contracted to play it.

Obviously. They could go and buy one from a shop if they wanted to. What I'm saying is that Ping might not give out drivers to anyone who rocks up at their tour van and says they want one.

MattyO1984

I personally can't see Ping saying no you can't have one of our drivers to a non-staff member who approached the Tour van. I can't see any tour van saying that to any tour player.

For what it is worth, it seems like Ping fairway woods and hybrids pop up regularly in the bags of non-staffers. I can remember Kuchar for example having their fairway woods in play and Mickelson using one of the hybrids. Then there putters are seen often enough. Martin Kaymer being a prime example.

I would certainly go down the route that other brands have more money to through around based on their strategy for selling clubs. I don't think anyone would dispute that Taylor Made want to own the driver count week in, week out. Achieving that seems to be the most important thing for them. They certainly weren't shy in paying Tour guys or giving them bonuses for winning with their drivers. Given the technical experience of the guys fitting pro's for their clubs I can't imagine there is much of a difference between any driver that they could be fit for. So if the clubs perform the same but one club earns you more money, which club are you going to go with?

Rickie Fowler has also used a Ping hybrid in the past, the G20 was popular on Tour when it first came out.

I was going to say a lot of non-Ping players carry a Ping fairway wood or hybrid, but I see it's already been covered. In a recent WITB, I noticed one non-Ping pro had a 60* Glide wedge in his bag. I thought that was interesting, but I can't remember who it was.

Padraig Harrington still carries and Eye2 Gorge LW.

Oh, I'd forgotten about that. But I don't think he was the one I was thinking of.

Vindog

While they don't seem to aggressively go after players, the other side of that is they also don't seem to lose many either. Billy ho being the only recent player to have left.

They also seem to be not interested in the fanfare that acquiring players might come with. (cough nike) even keel type thing.

I remember reading on here that ping only does 14 club deals and a putter is mandatory. I am sure some guys like to have some more flexibility in what they do.

The 14 club thing, imho, is why they have such and awesome tour department. Making the best in the world happy is no easy task and they always turn out some cool stuff.

No, they have full deals that require putter and driver and a certain number of clubs, but it's not 14. They also have other deals. Louis O doesn't carry ping wedges. But he is one of their flagship guys. With the full deal.

If I remember correctly their endorsement contracts aren't the same as other companies. They used to have a contract that paid based on performance. It may be different now. But that was a big deal to karsten when he started getting staff players.

Really only 3 players that I remember in recent years have left them. Jason gore, Harris English, and now Billy ho.

It's a good company and they are good to their people. But in the world of publicly traded companies with shareholders that expect certain things, they are still a family owned business that does things a different way.

That is all good info. Thank you. I know the one sticking point for them in the putter. You must play a ping putte, which I would love bc that's all I play.

I have been a ping fan for a long time for many reasons. Great brand all around.

dbleag

Many good players started off using PING clubs. Fred Couples, Nick Price, Phil Mickleson, Billy Horshell, Charles Howell III, Rickie Fowler, Harris English, Tiger, and many others used them as juniors, college players or early in their professional careers.

When players become prominent enough, tempting offers from competing manufacturers come rolling in. That's when a player's manager encourages them to think about the commercial opportunities and financial reasons to switch.

PING seems to expect more from their staffers as far as number of clubs required in the bag, and those who believe in the PING way feel comfortable with those requirements.

Santiago Golf

Santiago Golf

The reason is, like Titleist, very rarely will a player leave one brand of club to play PING. Most players come out of college playing Titleist, PING, or Mizuno. Then if they are good, they will get a club offer from one the big names in golf: TMAG, Cally, NIKE. If they don't mind switching equipment, they will switch for big bucks. But the first mention companies don't go chasing players. The players who are on staff with them have been playing that brand most of their life.

Funnily enough, I was talking to someone about my dodgy old ping irons this morning and he mentioned that, despite being on a TM woods deal, Jame Donaldson (currently t11 at Doral) has some clunky old ping irons in his bag.

Last year's witb is here :

I wonder what they say when he wanders into the Ping truck with those to get the inserts glued back in...

Sheesh an old callaway steelhead too - nice.

I wonder if he gets any cash at all from Ping or Callaway for having these old bats in the bag, or if he wins? They might not consider it in their best interests for the weekend warriors to realise that a £100 bag from the bay would serve just fine...

He possibly could get some cash from ping if he were to win... I think thats how they used to pay people... if you won with thier stuff... they "thanked" you

chip22

FWIW when i've looked at a lot of the "photos from <insert collegiate tourney here>, it seems a lot of the nations top college players play Ping irons (mostly S55) which goes along with dbleag's comments about better players choosing Titleist, Ping, or Mizzy. I think it's kind of pointless to put a ton of value in what the pros are playing (unless the brand is not their flagship sponsor) b/c we all know its a lot to do with $$$. If youre looking to top players for an indication on product quality, collegiate players might be worth more of a look than the pros IMO b/c they can choose whatever they want.

Ping makes good stuff; but so does almost everyone else. TM pays the most tee-up money for driver and its a good product. Makes it an easy decision for tour players without a driver requirement in their contract.

Given the skill level of a tour pro, does it really make that much difference? Drivers properly fit are all maxed out, some guys change irons by model year, but how much real difference is there?

i would imagine for most of those guys... if they like it and it looks "right" to them, they could care less about whose name is on it.. so might as well get a little extra cash for using it.

who knows..

Maybe Ping is just very, very tight with their money. I know several websites that give free shipping if you spend a certain amount but Ping NEVER allows free shipping. I'm not sure why they care if the vendor pays for shipping, but it seems t be a big deal t them.

I play Ping clubs exclusively, have a Ping bag, hat, towel etc. I have always wondered why Ping didn't make golf balls, then a couple of weeks ago a friend found a ball while we were playing that was a Ping Zing. Don't know how old it was since Ping made Zing clubs maybe back in the last century.

the balls haven't been made since the late 80s IIRC. Karsten Solheim said that was one of his biggest mistakes, getting into the golf ball business.

Could possibly be the lack of forged irons and wedges.

RBC Heritage: Final round suspended due to darkness, Monday finish underway at Harbour Town

Change Text Size

Updated: Monday, April 22, 8 a.m. ET: The final round of the RBC Heritage resumed at 8 a.m. ET.

Scheffler, chasing his fourth PGA TOUR win in five starts, authored a signature moment in the waning twilight Sunday, recovering from a hooked 4-iron second shot on the par-4 15th with a sorcerous wedge to 11 feet that he converted for an unlikely par to maintain a five-stroke lead over Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, J.T. Poston and Sahith Theegala.

Scheffler, chasing his fourth PGA TOUR win in five starts, stood 20 under for the tournament as the final round was suspended due to darkness at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, with nine players yet to complete the final round on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

This will be the second unscheduled Monday finish on the PGA TOUR this season and first since the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, won by Austin Eckroat. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, won by Wyndham Clark, was shortened to 54 holes after play was unable to be contested on Sunday and Monday.

Sunday’s play at Harbour Town was initially suspended at 4:28 p.m. due to lightning in the area. The final pairing of Scheffler and Sepp Straka had completed 11 holes at the time. Players were removed from the course, with the delay ultimately lasting 2 hours and 32 minutes before play resumed at 7 p.m.

Updated: Sunday, April 21, 6:30 p.m. ET: The final round of the RBC Heritage will resume at 7 p.m. ET.

Updated: Sunday, April 21, 5:40 p.m. ET: The final round of the RBC Heritage will not resume at 6 p.m. ET.

Updated: Sunday, April 21, 5:28 p.m. ET: The final round of the RBC Heritage is scheduled to resume at 6 p.m. ET.

Updated: Sunday, April 21, 4:28 p.m. ET: The RBC Heritage’s final round has been suspended due to lightning in the area, with the final groups playing the back nine Sunday at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Play was suspended at 4:28 p.m. local time, with leader Scottie Scheffler playing the 12th hole. Players were taken off the course at the time of suspension.

Scheffler began the final round at 16 under, one stroke clear of Sepp Straka, and the world No. 1 turned in 3-under 33 with a chip-in eagle at the par-5 second, a two-putt birdie at the par-5 fifth and seven pars. Scheffler stood 19 under, four strokes clear of the field at the time of delay. Seven players stood 15 under.

“We were hoping to play through this; we felt like we had another 25 minutes left of this heavy rain and were then going to get a break on the back end,” said Mark Dusbabek, the PGA TOUR’s senior director lead TV Rules & Video Analyst, on the CBS broadcast. “We had lightning unfortunately pop up 4 miles away; just suddenly caught us in, so we had to stop play for this. We’re going to see how things go here and make a decision.

"The course was not unplayable. It wasn't because of the rain. It was just because the lightning popped up."

The final round of the RBC Heritage is poised to deliver fans a fantastic finish, but that might not come without a little bit of weather late in the day.

After the first three rounds of tournament golf at Harbour Town Golf Links were accompanied by sunshine and temperatures ranging from the upper 70s into the mid-80s, Sunday could bring golfers a different challenge to navigate as the tournament comes to a close.

According to the forecast, a cold front will be slowly moving southward into the Hilton Head Island area on Sunday, increasing the chances for showers and a few thunderstorms as play gets into the early to mid-afternoon hours and continuing into the evening hours. Storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Otherwise, Sunday morning will remain dry with temperatures warming into the mid to upper 70s before falling into the 60s late in the day. Light wind Sunday morning will increase out of the north 10-15 gusting to 20-25 mph late in the day.

The final pairing of the day, Scottie Scheffler and Sepp Straka, are set to tee off at 1:55 p.m. ET. Scheffler holds a one-stroke lead at 16-under.
