An Introduction to Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia. It is a very diverse city both in its people and style. From unique skyscrapers like the Petronas Twin Towers to the picturesque Chinatown shops and the bustling city center to the botanical gardens, you could stroll around Kuala Lumpur and always be looking at something completely different.

For us, this question is so hard because we are slow travelers who enjoy a lazy morning or afternoon every once in a while. However, to get a taste of what this city has to offer, you can see a lot in just one day or two.

Exploring Kuala Lumpur on a Budget

We first visited, not expecting much as we prefer to spend our time exploring the outdoors over cities, and were excited to board our plane to Borneo . But Kuala Lumpur definitely left an imprint on us and we are excited to share about the things that made us love the city so much.

As budget backpackers through Southeast Asia, we are always trying to stay under a certain dollar amount and Malaysia was definitely more expensive than some of its neighbors like Thailand and Cambodia. However, in the capital, there are plenty of free and budget-friendly things to do to fill your time, learn something new, and enjoy.

There’s so much to do for free in KL that you might need to stay a couple of days to enjoy everything on this list. From admiring cultural sites to strolling through the greenery, this list has a few things for everyone.

1. Marvel at the Street Art

After visiting Georgetown, we weren’t sure if the street art in Kuala Lumpur could live up to the competition. We were wrong. The street art in Kuala Lumpur varies so much from detailed paintings of those who live there to bright, colorful walls full of wildlife. You could truly spend hours enjoying the street art in Kuala Lumpur.

We recommend grabbing an iced coffee and taking a morning stroll down some of the many art-filled streets. Some of our favorites are tagged on the map at the bottom!

2. Stroll Through Central Market

Wander through shops of handmade goods and local souvenirs. Whether you’re a collector of antiques or looking for some elephant pants, you’ll probably find something for yourself in the Central Market. But a visit to Central Market doesn’t require spending money. You can marvel at all the items sold in the various shops, taking in all the shops have to offer.

3. Watch the Cultural Performance at MATiC

One of our top recommendations for free things to do in Kuala Lumpur!

If you have the time PLEASE visit MATiC and watch the cultural performance there. We enjoyed the 45-minute-long show and can’t recommend it enough. Currently, there are performances a few days a week at 3 pm (check the website or stop by for the current schedule).

The performance is put on by an enthusiastic group of young dancers and singers. It’s a wonderful blend of songs and dances from the different cultural groups that call Malaysia home. When asked, you can even volunteer to get on stage with the performers and learn a dance or two!

4. Climb Up to the Batu Caves Temple

A must on our list of things to do in Kuala Lumpur.

A very famous site near Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves, is worth the visit and is budget-friendly. We love when the famous sites are still affordable, and besides transportation, a visit to Batu Caves is free. This Hindu site is located 13 km from the Chinatown area and is easy to reach by Grab Taxi or Kuala Lumpur’s Public Transit System.

The 216 rainbow-colored steps are stunning, and the cave’s temple is breathtaking. We recommend visiting between sunrise and 9 am to have most of the place to yourself.

5. Make a Stop at the Guan Di Temple

This temple is one of the most impressive Chinese temples in KL, dedicated to the warrior recognized as the “God of War”. It’s home to the 59kg copper weapon believed to have special powers and protects those who touch it. When visiting you will see locals coming to pray and pay their respects. Please be respectful when visiting the religious site.

6. Picnic in KLCC Park

Surrounded by skyscrapers, like the Twin Towers, KLCC Park is a peaceful little green area in the city. In KLCC you will find joggers, picnickers, and maybe even a couple doing some crazy yoga poses. There is a jogging path, two fountains, and a children’s playscape.

You can take a peaceful stroll under the trees, wade through the swimming pool, and take a selfie with the Twin Towers towering behind you. It’s a beautiful park located in the bustling city center of Kuala Lumpur.

7. Peruse the Petaling Street Market in Chinatown

It’s so interesting to us to see the various knockoff products sold in markets around Asia. As people who aren’t big on name-brand items, we don’t really get it. But it is interesting to see the different fake sneakers and handbags being sold and crazy low prices.

Need a Gucci Purse? Ray Bans? What about shoes? Find some great fakes, street food, and other items sold in the Petaling Market in Chinatown.

8. Visit the Perdana Botanical Garden

Escape the bustling city feel with this free thing to do in Kuala Lumpur.

In need of some green? The Perdana Botanical Garden is located on the western side of Kuala Lumpur and is FREE to visit. After seeing the shocking 40 MYR price for the Eco Forest, we were happy to see that the Perdana Botanical Gardens are more budget-friendly. Stroll through the Unique Species collection and the beautiful Heliconia collection.

9. Learn About the City at Kuala Lumpur City Gallery

If you’re interested in learning about the history of Kuala Lumpur but don’t have the time for a tour, check out the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery. This small museum is located near Merdeka Square and shares some of the history of the capital. Plus you can grab a picture with the iconic I Love KL statue out front.

10. Visit the Beautiful Masjid Jamek

Although Malaysia is made up of a variety of cultures and customs, the most common religion in the country is Islam. In Kuala Lumpur, there are many different unique mosques. Masjid Jamek is open to visitors during certain times. Remember when visiting the mosque to follow the dress code and act respectively. The Masjid Jamek does offer robes for women at the entrance but men must wear full-length pants.

11. Admire the Architecture

Roaming the streets of Kuala Lumpur, you will see the drastic shift from Chinatown shophouses to towering skyscrapers. In the mix of the old and new, there are also remnants of colonial times, as well as stunning Islamic architecture like the Masjid Jamek mosque mentioned above.

Spend some time exploring the streets, making stops at buildings like the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the National Mosque of Malaysia.

12. Watch the City Light Up at Night

At night, the city glows and some of the unique structures in the city, become even more special. The Menara Tower lights up at night and changes color. It’s free to see from wherever you can, including your hotel window if you’re close enough! Another free light show in the city is the Symphony Lake Water Show. Right next to the Petronas Twin Towers, this fountain dances to music and puts on a light show every night in KLCC Park.

13. Ride the FREE City Bus

Okay, this may not be something that you “do,” but it is something to use while exploring Kuala Lumpur. The city offers a free bus with various lines. 14. Sample the Street Food

You need to eat right? The street food in Malaysia is SO good, from Mee Goreng and Popiah, to Nutmeg Juice and Kuey Teow. We highly recommend trying Ray’s Power Corner in Chinatown, the fried rice and mee goreng is delicious and the owners are so kind!

15. Islamic Art Museum

This museum is full of historical and creative pieces of art related to Islam and Islamic empires. Inside you’ll find jewelry, armor, wood pieces, tiles, paintings, and more. We spent a couple of hours walking through the museum and could have easily spent a little more if we weren’t in need of lunch. We recommend eating before or bringing a snack so you can spend as much time as you need in the museum.

16. Batik Canting Workshop

Batik is a technique for dying cloth using wax to create designs. It originates in Indonesia and surrounding Malay cultures. The original technique uses wax canting but today you will often find printed Batik designs in shops.

This workshop offered by Teja Arts and Crafts at the Malaysian Tourism Centre was educational and fun! During the class, we learned about traditional batik canting and practiced it ourselves! It’s more tricky than it looks and our art would never be put in the Islamic Art Museum (haha) but it was still such a fun workshop and we will cherish the memory!

Visiting Kuala Lumpur

As we mentioned before, KL definitely surprised us (in a good way). We ended up loving our time in Kuala Lumpur, especially because there was much more to do than we originally thought! Although Malaysia as a whole might be more expensive than it’s neighbors, there’s plenty of exciting free things to do in the capital.

If you’re a regular visitor to Kuala Lumpur or a resident of the bustling city, you’re probably on the lookout for things to do in the capital come the weekends. While mall hopping and food hunting are no-brainer activities, you’ll probably be glad to know you can have a good time without having to pay a single cent too.

From leisurely hikes to art exhibitions, the array of must-visit attractions in Malaysia is vast – and many of them don’t even require you to whip out your wallet.

You’ve likely passed REXKL while exploring Petaling Street and wondered what the artsy-looking building holds. Formerly a cinema, it was converted into a lifestyle hub in 2019, and now houses coffee shops and a selection of restaurants – including The Background – serving everything from hand-pulled noodles to barbecued ribs.

To accommodate patrons, there are various seating options scattered around the hub – bar seats, outdoor benches, and dining tables included. A new addition is the yellow bleacher-style seating at Alley Play along the building’s facade, where you can chill out and people watch.

Wander up to the highest floor of the exposed-brick building to find BookXcess’s flagship outlet. Boasting a maze-like structure and towering bookshelves housing over 80,000 books on varying floor levels, the bookstore has become popular among locals looking to browse for books and take photos.

Malaysia is home to several bridges that do a lot more than just provide a crossing for vehicles and pedestrians. Some light up at night, making them truly iconic sights to behold. One of these is Saloma Link Bridge, a new futuristic landmark in the heart of KL. 

Besides making it easy for locals to travel between Kampung Baru and the Kuala Lumpur city centre over the Klang River, the bridge is illuminated at night between 7pm-10pm. For Merdeka, it is known to light up the night sky with the familiar bold colours of the Jalur Gemilang.

Fun fact : The bridge was named after the Malaysian-Singaporean singer, Saloma, and was designed to resemble overlapping betel nut leaves, or Sirih Junjung . 

Getting here: Saloma Link Bridge is about a 10-minute walk from KLCC. Head towards the direction of Menara Public Bank, between Jalan Ampang, Jalan P. Ramlee and Jalan Yap Kwan Seng. There is an open-air carpark on your right – and on your left is the entrance to the bridge, at the end of Jalan Saloma.

Though KL is known for its glittering skyscrapers and bustling malls, nature gems can nevertheless be found nestled in the heart of the city. If you’re looking to spend a day in nature, put on your walking shoes and drop by Taman Tugu for a hike. This 66-acre park is set on a plot of land once reserved for a theme park, and was conserved along with the secondary forest contained within it.

There are several hiking trails to explore and appreciate the greenery here. These include relatively short and easy trails that allow everyone to give this activity a go. 

A full loop on the main trail is around  5km long, but beginners can opt for the shortest 1km-long Nursery Trail that takes around 2 hours to complete. Trail maps are available at the starting points, and distance markers guide visitors along the way. It’s recommended to take a photo of the map to refer to during your hike.

During your hike, spot some of the 1,000 endangered and critically-endangered trees within the site that have been tagged for preservation. Some trees are said to be over 100 years old.

Other activities to check out here include pop-up food vendors, open from 7am-1pm on the weekends, and outdoor Zumba sessions, which kick off at 8am Saturdays.

Ilham Gallery is a cosy public art gallery inside ILHAM Tower, that hosts free exhibitions. In place of a permanent art collection, the gallery’s regularly-held, focused exhibitions showcase modern and contemporary works by artists from Malaysia and around the Asian region.

A mix of artworks, photographs, and installations can be typically found on display at Levels 3 and 5 of the building. The latest “Dream Of The Day” exhibition, held from now till May 2023, hosts a collection of surreal art pieces in the form of paintings, slow cinema, and photographs.  

You can also spot Ai Weiwei’s bronze globe-like sculptures titled “Divina Proportione” at the building’s entrance. It’s the Chinese artist’s first permanent public sculptural work installed in Southeast Asia.

Besides the exhibitions, the gallery has a gift shop on the 5th floor for visitors looking to shop a range of gifts and souvenirs from local artisans and designers in KL. The shop also serves a selection of drinks and coffee to help you recharge after you’ve explored the exhibitions. 

The gallery is easily accessible by public transport. Just alight at LRT Ampang Park station and walk for about 2 minutes to reach the gallery, or hop on the free bus service, Go KL City Bus, which stops in front of Menara Citibank, about a 3-minute walk away.

It’s not every day that you can find a basketball court inside a shopping mall – and a free one at that. At Lot 10 Shopping Centre in the heart of KL, there’s Lot 10 Basket Ball Court , a free-to-use court that only requires you to register for usage.

You can book a spot and get an entry pass at the ground floor of the mall, at the Cheerleaders counter.

Bring along your own basketball, and you’ll be shooting hoops – and showing off your skills – in an air-conditioned space with an alternative setting, with the buzz of mall-goers around you.

The Godown is a well-hidden arts centre and event space located in the heart of KL on Lorong Ampang. It hosts various events – including free art exhibitions and events such as the KL Art Book Fair in the past – in its semi open-air main hall, which has an old charm about it as it used to be a warehouse with over 100 years of history.

In January and February 2023, the art space is hosting a free art exhibition called Bakul: Everyday Baskets from Sabah , featuring over 60 baskets floating in mid-air.

On the rooftop of the building is a garden with circular outdoor seating and high-up a view of KL. 

Finding this spot can be a challenge, as the building’s main entrance is located along a narrow one-lane street. But here’s a tip – you’ll find the building just across the street from St John Cathedral. And if you’re heading there by car, there’s a parking lot in front of the building where you can park your car for about RM3 per hour.

Often called the green lung of the city, Perdana Botanical Gardens is a sprawling park that spans 226 acres – to put this into perspective, that’s about 170 football fields.

The park houses jogging paths, exercise facilities, picnic tables, and manicured gardens, set against a forest-like landscape so visitors can escape to nature without the long drive away from the metropolis.

A highlight for photographers here is the expansive yellow-tinted canopy at Laman Perdana. The manmade structures are surrounded by massive mature trees, offering nature lovers a spectacular view of greenery and flowerbeds while shaded from the sun. 

There are several areas around the park where you can have a picnic, which is a popular activity here. Opt to have your meal outdoors at the picnic tables, or right on the well-trimmed lawns.

Another must-see attraction at the park is the Sunken Garden . It comprises a star-shaped centrepiece fountain, and low shrubs and Grecian containers carrying flowering annual plants, that is reminiscent of an European garden.

On par with must-visit streets featuring street art in George Town and Ipoh, Kwai Chai Hong in KL has become a popular spot among budding and professional photographers alike. Not only is the charming heritage lane lined with trendy cafes and hip bars, it also has permanent murals and regular pop-up art installations that have become a highlight among locals too. 

Spot murals inspired by old-timey Chinese life scenes, some of them boasting interactive elements like an old wooden bench so you can be a part of the artwork. 

To celebrate local festivities, the gorgeous back alley also hosts vibrant pop-up exhibitions. For Chinese New Year 2023, the alley was decorated with colourful lanterns and calligraphy artworks.

The Zhongshan Building is a creative arts hub housing a range of stores that include a vinyl store, independent bookstore, and coffee shop, all tucked within a discrete 1950s building. If not for the vibrant graffiti on the building’s facade, you might think it’s just another time-worn structure on the streets of KL.

Wander inside the hub to find shops such as Tandang Record Store , which carries everything from vinyls and cassettes to band merch and music zines. Also worth checking out is takos , a lifestyle shop that hand-embroiders and knits minimalist bucket hats and tote bags. 

Book lovers will want to pay  Balai Buku Raya a visit too. This cosy independent bookstore houses a collection of rare and out-of-print books that are sure to excite any bibliophile.

If you start to feel hungry while exploring The Zhongshan Building, head to coffee shop Piu Piu Piu, or  French-inspired boulangerie  Tommy Le Baker  for a quick bite.

Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery might just be the last place you’d imagine to host interesting photo spots – that is, if you haven’t actually been there. The museum actually consists of six modern galleries covering themes such as economics, finance and numismatics, with uniquely-decorated surroundings that will interest history buffs and photographers alike.

At the Children’s Gallery you’ll find the museum’s a highlight – the RM1 Million Tunnel, which you can walk through, surrounded by variations of Malaysian banknote denominations from  over the past decades.

Over at the Economics Gallery , you can learn more about local economic policies and our country’s financial system – from a wall of giant newspaper cuttings including clippings of key moments related to finance in Malaysia’s history. History buffs will also enjoy a visit to the Numismatics Gallery , where there is a wall display of banknotes from around the world.

If you’re looking for a night-time activity that doesn’t involve checking out the eateries along Changkat Bukit Bintang, consider popping by the River of Life . A project to rejuvenate two rivers – Sungai Gombak and Sungai Klang – that converge at the iconic Masjid Jamek sees the area being host to a list of interesting activities to check out after sunset. 

Thanks to the presence of mist, neon blue lights, and fountain shows that electrify the area around the mosque – located just a 2-minute walk from the Sultan Abdul Samad Building – you might just want to drop by and experience the landmark at a different time of day.

The dancing fountains come alive every 15 minutes between 9.15pm to 10.30pm, daily.

The street art on Jalan Alor needs little to no introduction. Apart from the famed night market in the area that’s located just a stone’s throw away, there is a collection of vibrant murals on the facades of the buildings, the shops, and even the roads, making this spot a popular must-see attraction in KL. 

Having long shed its former, less-than-savoury reputation, the alleys between the buildings here now host a vibrant display of massive murals featuring underwater and jungle scenes and local flora and fauna. Some even stretch four-storeys high, and plaster across air-conditioner units and the streets.

An Instagrammer’s haven, the alley is worth a visit after tucking into a meal in Changkat Bukit Bintang – whether you’re looking to discover local scenes via the murals, or just snap photos with them. 

Getting here: Alight at Bukit Bintang or Imbi MRT station, and walk for about 5 minutes towards Jalan Bukit Bintang, just pass Jalan Alor.

Titiwangsa Lake Park , or Taman Tasik Titiwangsa as referred to by locals, is a recreational park that has a 57-hectare manmade lake set against the KL skyline. Besides being a popular place to catch the fireworks for New Year’s – thanks to the unblocked views of the city’s iconic skyscrapers – it’s also a popular hangout spot among locals due to the number of fun things to do on its grounds.

Fun fact : The park was designed in 1980 by Rio Takahashi, a Japanese landscape architect, so city folks could have another park to frequent besides the popular Perdana Botanical Garden.

Fishing and kayaking is permitted at the lake, with other facilities – a cycling track, a children’s playground, and exercise areas included – making it a place worth visiting to hang out with friends or the whole family on the weekends.

Is Kuala Lumpur expensive for tourists? Well, this modern metropolis can be costly, but a trip to the Malaysian capital doesn’t have to break the bank. In fact, you needn’t spend a ringgit to enjoy some of the best things to see and do in this vibrant city. Draped over a hill west of Central Market in the city centre, the Perdana Botanical gardens are an oasis of shady green amid the high-rise concrete-and-glass modernity of KL. There are waterfalls, lily ponds, formal box gardens and woodlands. Perdana preserves some rare Malaysian plants, including must-photograph sausage (and cannonball) trees, orchids and lesser-known species of the national flower, hibiscus. If you’ve got time, butterfly and bird parks are five minutes from the gardens, in Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park.

An easy day-hike in the city centre? It’s yours at KL Forest Eco Park, a patch of preserved tropical rainforest just south of the landmark twin Petronas Towers. And even if you don’t have a head for heights you’ll feel safe wandering along the well-netted Canopy Walk, which floats a couple of hundred feet in the air.

The Art House Gallery Museum of Ethnic Arts is a fascinating art gallery created by Mr Leonard Yiu. This gallery showcases intricate artwork and sculptures he has collected from over 20 years of travelling around in places like Sarawak, Sabah and Kalimantan.

A rich tapestry of art and culture is also found here in its museums and several historical sites. The places tell the story of the city’s colonial heritage. If you want to experience all these & have fun without paying a dime, let’s go through the list of iconic places to visit in Kuala Lumpur for free!

Parks & Natural Sites

Kuala Lumpur is a perfect balance of both natural and urban places for tourists. Here are some great beautiful natural places where you can visit for free. You can enjoy the endless serenity of this iconic city in Malaysia!

Explore the forest trails at Taman Tugu

Put on your walking shoes and head to Taman Tugu for a hike if you’re searching for a way to spend a day in the great outdoors. The 66-acre theme park was preserved together with the secondary forest that it included. Explore the many hiking routes here and take in the surroundings. These comprise rather basic and brief paths that anybody can try out for this kind of exercise.

Witness a few of the 1,000 endangered and critically endangered trees that have been designated for protection around the property as you stroll. It is reported that some trees are almost a century old. There are also outdoor zumba classes and pop-up food vendors to check out here for free.

Explore the KLCC park 

Situated at the foot of the famous Petronas Twin Towers, the expansive urban green space known as Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre ( KLCC ) Park is found in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With its expansive 50 acres of jogging routes, kids’ play area, water features, and greenery, it offers a place of peace in the middle of the busy capital city. With almost 1900 trees representing 74 species, this urban park.

The park’s nature has been thoughtfully chosen to draw in a variety of birds. The species and traits of these native trees are described on signboards. The centre of attention of the park is Symphony Lake, where guests may take in nighttime synchronised water fountain shows paired with music. Both locals and visitors enjoy visiting KLCC Park because of its beautiful scenery and outdoor activities; all free of cost.

Plan a picnic at Perdana Botanical Garden

Perdana Botanical Gardens, also referred to as the “green lung” of the city, is a large park measuring 226 acres, or around 170 football fields. With its well-kept gardens, picnic tables, exercise centres, and jogging trails set against a forest-like backdrop, the park allows visitors to experience nature without having to make a long trip from the city. The man-made structures are surrounded by massive mature trees, offering nature lovers a spectacular view of greenery and flowerbeds while shaded from the sun.

There are several areas around the park where you can have a picnic, which is a popular activity here. Opt to have your meal outdoors at the picnic tables or right on the well-trimmed lawns. Another must-see attraction at the park is the Sunken Garden. It comprises a star-shaped centrepiece fountain and low shrubs and Grecian containers carrying flowering annual plants, reminiscent of a European garden.

Explore the streets of George Town and Ipoh which are home to street art. Kwai Chai Hong in KL has grown to be a well-liked location for both amateur and professional photographers. The quaint history street is not only dotted with fashionable bars and chic cafes, but it also features frequent pop-up art installations and permanent murals that have become locals’ favourites.

The Ilham Gallery is a public art gallery that often offers free exhibitions. The building is usually a house of a mixture of artworks, pictures, and installations, as the gallery does not have a permanent art collection. Instead, it hosts themed exhibitions regularly that highlight modern and contemporary works by artists from Malaysia and other parts of Asia.

You can also see some captivating bronze globe-shaped sculptures by Ai Weiwei, titled “Divina Proportione,” which are also visible at the building’s entrance. In addition to the exhibitions, guests wishing to purchase a variety of items and souvenirs from KL-based local artisans and designers can do so at the gallery’s gift shop. To help you refuel after viewing the exhibitions, the café also sells coffee and a variety of drinks.

Visit the iconic National Monument Park

The well-known National Monument is a short stroll away from the famous Lake Gardens of KL. Designed as a monument, the National Monument honours the brave warriors who lost their lives defending our nation’s independence.

As the monument is close to the Lake Gardens, there are many attractions in the area. Explore the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre

The Royal Selangor Visitor Centre offers visitors an incredible insight into the craft of pewter making and the nation’s pewter industry. If you are a great enthusiast of exploring historical things, then you must visit this place. It is situated around 20 minutes from central Kuala Lumpur. The main attractions of the facility, which is split up into multiple galleries, are as follows:

•The Workshops: Here you can create your pewter using age-old methods, then take your creation home.

•Live demonstrations: See how to cast, polish, assemble, craft, and engrave pewter.

•Exhibitions: Learn about the development of the pewter industry in Malaysia today as well as its historical background. Discover the characteristics and uses of pewter at the Science Discovery Gallery. Also, witness the Giant Tankard which is made up of 7,000 separate tanks is a replica of the Petronas Twin Towers of Malaysia.

Other features of the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre include the visitor centre which has a retail showcase with items that can be purchased. There is also a chamber of chimes where you can hear different sounds produced by pewter chimes. All these facilities can be accessed for free.

Visit the sacred Thean Hou Temple

One of Southeast Asia’s biggest and most ancient Buddhist temples is called Thean Hou Temple . One of the most popular visitor attractions in Kuala Lumpur which provides breathtaking, broad views of the city from its hilltop location.

This elegant Chinese temple honours Thean Hou, the Queen of Heaven, who guards those who depend on the water for their livelihood. The temple was built between 1981 and 1987, and its design blends modern and traditional elements with elaborate murals and carvings.

In addition to the temple’s architectural appeal are the stunning pagoda roofing and columns with dragon-inspired designs, which stand in for prosperity and good fortune. Witness the magnificent National Mosque

The National Mosque was constructed as a celebration of Malaysia’s independence in 1963. It’s one of Southeast Asia’s biggest mosques. The thirteen states of Malaysia and the five pillars of Islam are symbolised in the architecture of the mosque by the 18-pointed star dome. Green and blue tiles cover the main dome. The mosque is situated in the centre of Kuala Lumpur.

It is a comparatively new concrete structure that combines modern and traditional Islamic architectural design. Outside of prayer hours, non-Muslims are able to visit the stunning National Mosque. The place expects visitors to dress modestly to enter the mosque. If not, they are provided robes to cover themselves.

Visit the historic Sultan Abdul Samad Building 

Malaysia’s historic landmark, the Abdul Samad Building, with a history covering the late 19th century, is definitely one of Malaysia’s finest and most admired heritage structures as well as an important reminder of history.

The red brick structure features three towers that define its architecture which combines the Mughal & Moorish elements, along with tall white arches, a grand porch, curved colonnades, and two domes that highlight the building’s overall beauty. In addition, it is also famous as a venue for a number of occasions and festivals. If you want to admire the intricate designs & historic heritage of Malaysia for free and capture amazing photos of your holidays, this could be a perfect backdrop.

Merdeka Square

Merdeka Square is next to the Royal Selangor Club and directly across from the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. This historical location represents the raising of the Malayan flag and the lowering of the Union flag. At a height of 100 metres, the flagpole bearing the Malaysian flag is the tallest in the world.

The historical location of Malaya’s (Malaysia) independence declaration is Merdeka Square. Capture some photos here if you are an enthusiast of Malayan history. Merdeka Square has a lot of local attractions. Shoppers can purchase local food and gifts at Central Market Kuala Lumpur while also learning about the various cultures that make up Malaysian society. The Central Market consists of many floors that are home to various stalls.

Jalan Alor, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most beloved and historic culinary lanes, was first formed as a street market and restaurant in the early 1900s and has been a part of the city for more than a century. This location is a well-liked must-see sight in Kuala Lumpur because, in addition to the well-known night market that is nearby, it has a variety of colourful murals on the facade of the buildings, shops, and even the roads.

The buildings here have created pathways that are now home to a colourful exhibition of huge paintings depicting scenes from the jungle and underwater. The crowded street’s vintage beauty contrasts sharply with the rest of Kuala Lumpur’s new architecture. There are about 200 distinct street food vendors and regular restaurants at the Jalan Alor Night Market in Kuala Lumpur. There are also sporadic food stands there. Although it’s not always the largest night market in Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Alor Food Street is the largest night market in KL on a daily basis.

Visit the most popular Chinatown 

A leisurely walk around Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown in the evening is a great way to experience the local food and customs. In addition to serving as the ideal introduction to the vibrant area. You’ll have plenty of time to stroll through crowded streets. Arrive at the famous Jamek Mosque, Kuala Lumpur’s oldest Islamic place of worship. It is a great location for many beautiful pictures.

If you visit the nearby night market, you may enjoy a delicious meal at a hawker stall and observe the everyday activities of the Chinese communities. Alternatively, you can satisfy your shopping cravings with an extensive selection of souvenir displays in the busy Central Market. If you’re looking for free outdoor activities in KL, you can consider visiting Batu Caves. There are actually three caves in Batu Caves:

• Temple Cave (Cathedral Cave) – This is the main cave, also known as the largest cave going up to 91-meters. It’s also where you have to climb 272 colorful stone steps in order to reach the top.

The caves which don’t require you to climb stairs would be:

• Ramayana Cave – Located on the left side of Batu Caves, you can admire various statues and scenes related to history. The famous Hindu Monkey God, Lord Hanuman, is also situated here.
• Cave Villa – You can find various Hindu statues and paintings here alongside various colorful lights hanging around.

Note : Temple Cave is free, but the Cave Villa costs RM7 and RM15 for Malaysians and Non-Malaysians respectively. The Ramayana Cave has a flat fee of RM5.

2. Be one with nature at KLCC Park

Public transport.

In Kuala Lumpur there are various forms of public transport:

• MRT : MRT is similar to the LRT and is easy to get around the city center.
• LRT : There are various LRT stations around Kuala Lumpur. You can also interchange to KTM through the designated stations.
• KTM : There are various KTM stations but generally it’s not as effective as LRT and MRT.
• Bus : The KL City Bus is a free bus service all around Kuala Lumpur. Besides that, there is the RapidKL which stops by the popular places in Kuala Lumpur.

E-Hailing & Taxi

• E-hailing : There are plenty of e-hailing drivers around Kuala Lumpur so it won’t be difficult to get around. Some of the best e-hailing apps include Grab and InDriver .
• Taxi : There are many taxi drivers around as well.

Free Things to Do in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia can be an expensive city to visit if you're not careful (the wares in Bukit Bintang's malls are some of the priciest you'll find in the region) but there's also plenty of free stuff for travelers in the know.

Free Transportation in Kuala Lumpur's City Center

Let's start with getting around: yes, you need to pay up to use Kuala Lumpur's LRT and Monorail . But there are four free bus routes that encircle the Bukit Bintang/KLCC/Chinatown areas of central Kuala Lumpur that don't charge a cent for their use.

The GO KL buses were intended to decongest central Kuala Lumpur by decreasing the use of cars in the business district. Whether that worked is debatable, but the savings are pretty tangible - you can hitch a free ride from the Pavilion Mall in Bukit Bintang to get to Pasar Seni, or vice versa.

Each bus stops at the regular bus stop every five to 15 minutes, depending on the traffic situation. Each bus line terminates at an important city transport nexus: Pasar Seni (near Chinatown LRT), Titiwangsa Bus Terminal , KLCC , KL Sentral and Bukit Bintang .

Buses for both routes are air-conditioned, with enough space for 60-80 passengers. The service runs between 6am and 11pm daily. Visit their official website for the four lines' stops and different routes.

Free Tour of Dataran Merdeka

Formerly the site of the British Empire's administrative nerve center in Selangor, the buildings around Dataran Merdeka (Freedom Square) served as the political, spiritual and social convergence point for the British in Malaya until independence was declared here on August 31, 1957.

Today, the Kuala Lumpur government runs a free Dataran Merdeka Heritage Walk that explores this historically significant district. The tour kicks off at the KL City Gallery ( location on Google Maps ), a former printing press that now serves as the historic quarter's main tourist office (pictured above) and proceeds to each of the historic buildings surrounding the grassy plaza called the Padang:

• the Sultan Abdul Samad Building , the administrative center of colonial-era Kuala Lumpur;
• the Cathedral of Saint Mary, an early-Gothic Anglican church that now serves as the seat of the local Anglican bishop;
• the National Textile Museum, an imposing Mughal-style building; and
• the Royal Selangor Club, a men's only club for colonials' drinking and socializing.

Free Walkabouts through Kuala Lumpur's Parks

Kuala Lumpur's green spaces can be found surprisingly close to the city center. You can reach any of the following parks within a few minutes' ride on the train, and exercise, walk and hike (for free!) to your heart's content:

Perdana Botanical Gardens. This 220-acre park feels like a departure from KL's urban hurly-burly. Come in the morning to join joggers and tai chi practitioners; visit in the afternoon for a picnic with a view. With endless winding park pathways, access to the Orchid Garden (also free to the public), and various museums in the vicinity, the Perdana Botanical Gardens is certainly worth half a day's visit on the cheap.

The Gardens are open from 9am to 6pm every day, with free access on weekdays only (visits during weekends and public holidays entrance costs RM 1, or about 30 cents). For more information, visit their official site . Location on Google Maps .

KL Forest Eco-Park. The preserved jungle around Bukit Nanas (Nanas Hill) in central Kuala Lumpur may be better known for the 1,380-foot KL Tower that stands on the crest of a hill, but the climbing the tower isn't free – unlike the 9.37 hectare forest reserve around it.

KL Forest Eco-Park is the last fragment of the original rainforest that once covered Kuala Lumpur. The trees within the park – giant tropical species that have since been decimated throughout the rest of the region – shelter primates like the long-tailed macaque and the silvered langur; sinuous snakes; and birds. Take a hike through the KL Forest Eco-Park to imagine what KL was like in the days before people!

KLCC Park. This 50-acre park at the foot of Suria KLCC mall makes for a green contrast to KLCC's towering, shiny, steely structures (marked by its most iconic building, the Petronas Twin Towers).

The 1.3-km-long rubberized jogging track caters to cardio freaks, while the family-friendly stops around the rest of the park – the 10,000-square-meter Lake Symphony, the sculptures, fountains and children's playground – offer diversions to visitors of all ages. Titiwangsa Lake Garden. Another oasis of green in the middle of Malaysia's capital, this park surrounding a series of lakes also lets you plug in straight into Malaysia's culture, thanks to access to the National Art Gallery, Sutra Dance Theatre, and National Theatre.

Sports activities available at Titiwangsa include jogging, canoeing, and horse riding. Location on Google Maps .

Free Kuala Lumpur Art Gallery & Museum Tours

Some of Kuala Lumpur's top art galleries are also free to visit.

Start out at the venerable National Visual Arts Gallery – established in 1958, this showcase of Malaysian and Southeast Asian art is housed in a building that recalls traditional Malay architecture. The inside is just as impressive: almost 3,000 artworks run the gamut from traditional arts to avant-garde creations from both Peninsular and Eastern Malaysia. Then there's Galeri Petronas , accessible through the Suria KLCC mall at the podium of the Petronas Twin Towers. The Petronas petroleum conglomerate shows off its charitable/cultural side by sponsoring a venue for Malaysian artists and their fans – visitors can see new artists exhibit their work or attend different seminars on local developments in art and culture.

Finally, for a more hands-on experience, visit the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, where you can take a free guided tour of the pewter museum. Tin was once Malaysia's most valuable export, and Royal Selangor capitalized on its rich tin reserves to create a massive industry in pewterware.

While the tin mines have long since closed, Royal Selangor still churns out beautiful pewter crafts – you can review the enterprise's history and present works in their museum, and even sit down to try your hand at making pewterware by yourself! Location on Google Maps , official website .

A revolving selection of dancers from different indigenous cultural traditions show their talents – and will even pick audience members to try their dances onstage!

Travelling on a budget is tough and Malaysia has a reputation for being one of the more expensive countries in South East Asia. So are there any cheap or free things you can do in Kuala Lumpur?

As a matter of fact, there are plenty, you just have to know where to look. If you plan your trip well you can actually get a lot for your money in Kuala Lumpur.

The only thing that is impossible to get for a reasonable price in this city is alcohol. Unfortunately, you will always end up paying at least RM 13 (~ €2.80) for a small beer and RM 35 (~ €7.60) for a cocktail if you’re lucky.

But why not save on your activities in KL and then splurge on alcohol for a nice night out. It is all about balance and it really isn’t hard to find cheap things to do in Kuala Lumpur.

This post is separated into three sections:  Activities that are free, Activities where you could spend money but don’t have to  and  Activities that cost something but are very cheap

Of course, you have to add transport costs to all of these but everything on this list is reachable by LRT which will rarely cost you more than RM 2 to RM 4. (~ €0.40 to €0.90). Or just take the free GoKL bus which you will also conveniently find on this list.

Free things to do in Kuala Lumpur

If you’re sticking to a strict budget during your time in Kuala Lumpur, you need to check out these free things to do in the city.

1. Visit the National Art Gallery

Kuala Lumpur is a great place to visit for affordable museums, and the National Art Gallery is the perfect place to go for free on a rainy day in the city. Located just a quick drive from KLCC and not too far from Chow Kit, the National Gallery is easy to get to by Grab or via the Hospital Kuala Lumpur train station. It sits right next to the impressive Istana Budaya building, a performing arts centre with beautiful architecture.

While there are always changing exhibits, the gallery usually highlights a great mixture of local and international artists, including paintings, sculptures and more abstract modern art.

I’ve been here several times over the years, and there’s always something different on, which makes this a fun place to visit over and over again. It’s not a huge museum, but you can easily spend a few hours here.

While you’re in the area, consider visiting Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, a beautiful park located just around the corner.

Price:  Free Duration:  1 to 2 hours When should you go:  The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and it can get a bit crowded on weekends in the afternoon, so maybe avoid that. How to get there:  Train to Hospital Kuala Lumpur Station

2. Enjoy the view at KLCC Park

Exploring KLCC Park is one of the best free things to do in Kuala Lumpur, especially on a sunny day.

KLCC Park is Kuala Lumpur’s green lung located right at the foot of the Petronas Towers. It is not extremely large (around 20 hectares) but big enough to do some exploring.

You can reach the park via the conveniently named KLCC LRT stop.

In the park, there is a very large playground including a shallow swimming pool for children, a water fountain, a 1,4 km running loop, plenty of seating and some drinking fountains.

Of course, you can see many exotic trees and flowers.

KLCC Park can get very crowded, especially on the weekends. If you want to have a quiet experience you should go there before 10:00 AM when only a few morning runners and people doing Tai Chi are there.

Why not have a picnic or relax on one of the lawn or go for a run along the track and enjoy the spectacular views of the twin towers?

Price:  Free Duration:  30 minutes to walk through or however long you want to enjoy the park When should you go:  The park is open from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM every day. You should go early in the morning for a more peaceful atmosphere. How to get there:  LRT to KLCC Station

3. Go sightseeing with the GoKL Bus

Taking the GoKL bus might not exactly be an activity, but you can make it one if you like.

This bus is on my list of cheap things to do in Kuala Lumpur because it is one of the most effective ways to save money in the city in my opinion. It used to operate completely free of charge, but as of early 2024, foreigners need to pay RM1 per ride, which is still very affordable.

There are now 15 separate lines that can take you pretty much anywhere within the inner city, and more additions are being made almost every year, expanding the network. Buses run up to every 5 minutes and are very easy and convenient to use. They can, however, get crowded during peak times on the weekends and during rush hours.

You can pay your RM1 via credit or debit card or with Touch n Go.

Have you ever wanted to do one of those hop-on-hop-off tours in a city but they were just too expensive? The hop-on-hop-off tour in Kuala Lumpur costs RM 60 (~ €12) while to GoKL bus is so much more affordable.

They even share a good amount of the same stops. No need to pay for an expensive tour, just jump on the bus and enjoy the scenery. Get out where you want and get right back in the next one once you are done.

It’s as easy as that.

4. Spend time at the Ilham Tower Art Gallery

About a 12-minute walk from the Petronas Towers is another free gallery you can visit.

Ilham Art Gallery is located on the 3rd and 5th floor of Ilham Tower. It shows rotating exhibits of modern and contemporary art. You can check  their website  for details on the current exhibits.

The opening times are 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM Tuesdays to Saturdays and 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Sundays. The gallery is also closed on Mondays. Note that it sometimes closes temporarily for a few weeks when exhibits change.

There is a separate entrance on the left side of Ilham Tower leading up to the exhibitions. The space is not very large but worth a visit if you are looking for cheap things to do in Kuala Lumpur. There is also a small gift shop, which has a nice selection of items and art you can buy.

Location:  On the 3rd and 5th floor of Ilham Tower close to KLCC Park Price:  Free Duration:  30 minutes to 1 hour When should you go:  The gallery is open from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily except for Sundays when they close at 5:00 PM. They are closed on Mondays. How to get there:  Take the red LRT line to Ampang Park. From there it is only a 3-minute walk.

5. Relax at the Perdana Botanical Gardens

Kuala Lumpur’s Botanical Gardens are a 91–hectare large park located next to the National Museum, the National Mosque, the National Planetarium and the National Monument. You’ll find lots of significant landmarks and sightseeing opportunities in one place here. In my opinion, the botanical gardens are probably the best free or cheap activity in Kuala Lumpur out of all of them.

The gardens are quite large and a great way to get away from the busy city for a while and enjoy a little piece of nature in the heart of KL.

Within them, you can find the Orchid as well as the Hibiscus Gardens, a large artificial lake, a palm garden, a herb and spice garden and many more. Entrance to the gardens is free during the week and RM 1 (~ €0.20) on the weekends, although I have never been charged that.

Definitely bring bug spray when you visit!

The gardens can be a bit tricky to reach. I would take the LRT to KL Sentral or Pasar Seni and take a Grab from there, which will only cost around RM 5 (~ €1). Alternatively, you can also take the MRT to Muzium Negara from which the Gardens are only a 3-minute walk away.

Location:  A 25-minute drive south-west of KLCC next to the National Museum Price:  Free during the week, RM 1 (~ €0.20) on weekends Duration:  Around 2 hours maybe more to explore the whole park When should you go:  The park is open from 5:30 AM to 8:00 PM every day. If you go before 10:00 AM you will have a more serene experience. How to get there:  Take the dark green MRT line (Sungai Buloh – Kajang) to Muzium Negara station or take the red LRT line (Kelana – Jaya) to KL Sentral and take a Grab for around RM 5 (~ €1).

6. Visit Merdeka Square and Sultan Abdul Samad Building

Merdeka Square is very significant in Malaysia’s history as it became the symbol of the nation’s independence in 1957.

The square is located only a 10-minute walk from Pasar Seni LRT station and China Town. The square itself is not very impressive at first glance; what stands out more is the beautiful Sultan Abdul Samad Building.

Tourists should definitely visit the National Museum first to understand the square’s historical significance.

As there are many other attractions such as China Town, the River of Life Walk and the Textile Museum close by you should not miss out on going to Merdeka Square.

Location:  Close to China Town and not too far from Perdana Botanical Gardens Price:  Free Duration:  Maybe 10 minutes to take some pictures of Sultan Abdul Samad Building When should you go:  It is less hot in the mornings although it is fine to go whenever it suits you best How to get there:  Go to Masjid Jamel LRT station and walk for around 8 minutes. Alternatively, go to Pasar Seni LRT station and walk for 10 minutes. I think this route is nicer as you pass some other attractions such as Central Market, River of Life and the Textile Museum.

7. Take photos at the River of Life and Masjid Jamek Lookout Point

Masjid Jamek is the oldest mosque in the city. It sits on the convergence point of the rivers Klang and Gombak which makes for a great picture spot and fun cheap activity in Kuala Lumpur for a sunny afternoon.

In an effort to beautify and clean-up the area, the Malaysian Government constructed the River of Life Walk. This regeneration project has been named as one of the World’s Top 10 Best Waterfronts.

Masjid Jamek and the River of Life Waterfront are located very close to Merdeka Square and China Town so they’re easy to visit in one day.

Location:  Close to China Town and Merdeka Square Price:  Free Duration:  30 minutes depending on how long you want to enjoy the waterfront When should you go:  Any time of day as long as it’s not raining How to get there:  Go to Masjid Jamel LRT station and walk for around 8 minutes. Alternatively, go to Pasar Seni LRT station and walk for 7 minutes.

8. See the National Monument

Kuala Lumpur’s National Monument or “Tugu Negara” is a great cheap landmark to visit on your trip to Kuala Lumpur.

It’s located just north of Perdana Botanical Gardens and is easily reachable either on foot or by Grab. Although the walk from the north gate of the Botanical Gardens is only around 5 minutes, be aware that it is almost all uphill.

If you’re visiting the monument during the midday heat it’s much more convenient to get a Grab car or taxi to drive you up.

The monument commemorates fallen soldiers from Malaysia’s fight for independence. It has great views and should be on your list of things to visit if you’re in the area anyway.

Location:  Just north of Perdana Botanical Gardens Price:  Free Duration:  30 minutes to walk around When should you go:  During a sunny day, preferably in the morning when it’s not so hot. How to get there:  Take a Grab or the T820 Bus.

9. Head to the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station

If you are interested in architecture then you shouldn’t miss out on visiting Kuala Lumpur Railway Station.

Most railway traffic used to go through here until 2001 when KL Sentral became the main hub of the city.

It was built in 1910 and is easily recognisable by its distinct mix of Western and Eastern architecture.

It is located close to Pasar Seni LRT station as well as the National Mosque so why not stop by and take some pictures of this impressive building.

Location:  Close to Pasar Seni LRT Station and the National Mosque Price:  Free Duration:  15 minutes if you’re coming to take some photos for Instagram When should you go:  Any time of day How to get there:  Go to Pasar Seni LRT station and walk for around 15 minutes. It’s better to take the KTM Komuter Train directly to the Railway Station.

10. Stop by Sin Sze Si Ya, Guan Di and Sri Mahamariamman Temple

These three temples are located very close to each other in the heart of China Town. While Sin Sze Si Ya and Guan Di Temple are Taoist temples, Sri Mahamariamman Temple is a Hindu place of worship.

You can visit all three temples but make sure to be respectful and dress appropriately.

Kuala Lumpur is a melting pot of cultures which coexist peacefully. It’s a unique experience to see temples of different religious beliefs located only a few metres apart. Don’t miss out on Kuala Lumpur’s rich religious history.

Location:  Close to Pasar Seni LRT Station in China Town (see map) Price:  Free Duration:  About 10 to 20 minutes at each temple When should you go:  Visiting hours change frequently. Check online and avoid religious holidays. How to get there:  Go to Pasar Seni LRT station

11. Enjoy the view at Thean Hou Temple

Thean Hou Temple is by far my favourite temple and maybe even my favourite cheap thing to do in Kuala Lumpur.

This beautiful Buddhist Temple sits on the top of a hill and has stunning views overlooking the city. Its colourful architecture is the perfect subject for beautiful photos and of course, it’s free to enter.

As always it is important to be respectful when visiting a religious sight. The temple welcomes tourists but remember to dress modestly and respect any worshippers.

Unfortunately, the temple is difficult to reach by public transport. I would recommend taking a Grab or taxi from KL Sentral Station. Walking takes about half an hour but it is almost exclusively uphill and isn’t recommended.

Location:  South of Brickfields Price:  Free Duration:  Around one hour to explore the temple grounds and take pictures. When should you go:  Visiting hours are from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Definitely go when it’s sunny to really appreciate the temple’s beauty. How to get there:  Take a Grab or walk from the nearest bus station.

12. Enjoy the Petronas Art Gallery

Note: The Petronas Art Gallery is currently closed. We are hoping it will reopen soon and will keep you up-to-date when it does.

The Petronas Art Gallery is conveniently located within Suria Shopping Centre below the Petronas Towers. You can reach it by taking the read LRT line to KLCC Station which is directly connected to the mall.

Entrance to the gallery is free, which is why it is a great cheap activity in Kuala Lumpur, however, it’s quite small. It exhibits a broad spectrum of contemporary and modern art from both local and international artists. Exhibits change regularly.

Depending on how thoroughly you study the exhibition pieces I would say you can spend about 30 to 45 minutes maximum here.

I would go to the Petronas Art Gallery if you are in Suria Shopping Centre anyway and want to make a quick stop.

The opening times are 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Note that the gallery is closed on Mondays

Location : In Suria Shopping Centre, below the Petronas Towers Price : Free Duration:  About 30 to 45 minutes When should you go:  The gallery is open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM except for Mondays where they are closed. How to get there : Take the red LRT line to KLCC Station

Free things to do in Kuala Lumpur: spending money is optional

Some activities are technically free but to really enjoy them one might argue you will have to spend some money. However, if you don’t want to you don’t have to.

Most of them are related to shopping in one way or another.

13. Explore Chow Kit Market

Chow Kit Market is located in the north of Kuala Lumpur. It is KL’s largest wet market with a connecting market for clothing, shoes and accessories. It is reachable via the Monorail.

This market is loud and full of strange smells, sounds and people. You can buy all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables but also meat and fish which is prominently on display everywhere (hence the smells).

Of course, going there is free but you might want to buy something to make your trip complete. Trying some of the many foods and drinks offered there is a must.

You can get mangos, dragon fruit, rambutan or just about anything you desire for very low prices here.

The non-food section of the market offers mostly second-hand clothes and shoes as well as electronics, tailors and accessories such as sunglasses and handbags. Do not miss it as it is located on the opposite side of the road.

Chow Kit is a must-do cheap activity when you visit Kuala Lumpur. It is completely different from the rest of the city and not very far from KLCC. You can even walk there if you don’t mind the heat. From the Petronas Towers, it takes about 30 minutes.

Location:  Chow Kit, 30 minutes by foot north-west of KLCC Price:  Free, depending on what you buy Duration:  1 hour, maybe more if you sit down for some food When should you go:  The market officially opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 7:00 PM although most of the fresh produce vendors will start to leave at around 4:00 PM. Definitely go before or around lunchtime. How to get there:  Monorail to Chow Kit Station

14. Shop at Petaling Street

Petaling Street is one of Kuala Lumpur’s most popular tourist destinations. It is located in China Town and easily reachable via the LRT Stop Pasar Seni.

China Town is a great area to stay in Kuala Lumpur. You will find authentic street food and late-night bars here and a taste of Chinese culture in the middle of KL. Petaling Street is a busy market street with vendors offering fakes of just about anything you can imagine. Clothing, shoes, watches, bags, makeup, electronics; you will find it all here.

The market is cramped and the corridors between stalls are narrow. Vendors try to get the attention of the tourists in any way possible.

The market is mostly sheltered from rain under a large roof but it has grown into adjourning side streets and merged with street food stalls and restaurants.

Wandering through the maze that is Petaling Street can be overwhelming. Watch out for pickpockets and keep your belongings close to you.

Visiting Petaling Street is free but you will have to at least try some of the street food and snacks. This is a great place to have a go at trying durian if you’re not too put off by the lingering smell that seems to coat the entire area.

A popular dessert is the Chinese soy pudding served with brown sugar syrup. Many vendors in and around Petaling sell it for around RM 5 (~ €1).

Definitely put Petaling Street onto your bucket list of cheap things to do in Kuala Lumpur if it isn’t already.

Location : In the heart of China Town Price:  Free, depending on whether you buy snacks Duration : Around one hour, maybe more if you sit down to eat When should you go:  Around 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM is when most of the stalls will be open, although some start closing at 5:00 PM. How to get there : Take the red LRT line to Pasar Seni.

15. Visit Kasturi Walk

Kasturi Walk and Petaling Street can almost be considered as one activity since they are so close together. This market street is located just a few minutes walk from Petaling Street in China Town, right at Pasar Seni LRT Station. It can be easily spotted by its large and beautifully decorated sign.

If you are visiting Petaling Street you should definitely combine it with Kasturi Walk.

Kasturi Walk is also directly connected to Central Market, a popular and very large indoor market in the building next door. See the next section for details.

Like Petaling Street, Kasturi Walk is a roofed market street although it is a lot smaller and more relaxed. There is more space and the vendors aren’t as pushy. They sell mostly food items, snacks and fewer fakes. The vendors also shut down a bit earlier than Petaling Street which stays open until late.

Walking through the market only takes around 15 minutes, maybe even less since it is so small. Don’t forget about the small side street at the end of the market where local artists show off their portraits of famous people and public figures. You can have your own professionally painted if you’d like.

Kasturi Walk should not be neglected in favour of the larger and flashier Petaling Street. Combine your visits to both these market streets so you don’t miss out.

If you go later some of the stalls will be closed already. How to get there:  Take the red LRT line to Pasar Seni station.

16. Buy souvenirs at Central Market

Central Market is directly connected to Kasturi Walk although you will find they are very different.

While Kasturi Walk is smaller and focuses on snacks and some clothing stalls, Central Market is much larger and sells all types of art and souvenirs.

The building is very old and easily recognisable. It used to be home to a wet market but was turned into a tourist favourite in the 1980s. Today you will find a large selection of batik clothes and fabrics for sale as well as handcrafted items and souvenirs.

There is also a small section focusing on portrait art in a street behind the market that is connected to Kasturi Walk.

On the first and top floor, there are two very affordable food courts which are great for a quick lunch and one of my favourite places to grab an affordable meal in KL .

If you’re looking for souvenirs and gifts to take home Central Market is the place to go.

Location : China Town next to Pasar Seni LRT station Price : Free Duration:  Around 45 minutes When should you go:  Official opening times are 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM but it tends to close in the late afternoon at around 5:00 PM. How to get there:  Take the red LRT line to Pasar Seni station.

17. Climb the rainbow steps at the Batu Caves

Surprisingly enough Kuala Lumpur’s main and most popular attraction is actually free to visit.

Many tourists visit Kuala Lumpur just to see the Batu Caves, a group of spectacular caves with a large golden statue and rainbow steps leading up to the entrance. Inside the caves are multiple temples which act as a pilgrimage destination for many people of the Hindu faith.

The caves are located north of Kuala Lumpur and can be easily reached with the KTM Komuter train , which takes about 35 minutes from KL Sentral.

Although visiting the main cave is free there are some smaller caves like the Cave Villa have a small entrance fee, but you won’t miss much if you don’t visit them.

This should be on the top of your to–do list in Kuala Lumpur and the Batu Caves are a clear favourite of the cheap things to do in the city.

18. Go shopping at Kuala Lumpur’s best shopping malls

Going to a shopping mall may not necessarily be your first thought when you think of cheap things to do in Kuala Lumpur, but it can be worth a visit. Kuala Lumpur has a very large selection of malls all with unique features and attractions.

The food courts are usually very cheap and provide you with a quick and easy lunch on a budget. Plus you won’t have to limit yourself to just fast food. Most malls have authentic and high quality local and international food at low prices.

19. Have the best street food at Jalan Alor

Jalan Alor is a famous late-night food street located in the popular nightlife area of Bukit Bintang.

It specialises in seafood, although there is a great selection of desserts and snacks that will fit everyone’s taste.

You’ll find street performers and a lively atmosphere as you either sit down at one of the many restaurants or simply wander along the street and enjoy the evening.

The street is completely deserted during the day but comes alive every evening at around 5:00 PM and stays open until past midnight. Definitely come here for a seafood dinner or a late-night snack.

20. Visit Brickfields and Sri Kandaswamy Kovil Temple

Kuala Lumpur’s Little India is a vibrant and colourful part of the city that you should definitely visit.

The area is very different from the rest of Kuala Lumpur, and great to get an authentic lunch or just to wander the streets and admire the little stores. This is an absolute hotspot for vegetarian food, which can otherwise be a bit tricky to find in KL.

A famous landmark in Brickfields is Sri Kandaswamy Kovil Temple. This beautiful Hindu Temple is a popular photo location, although they do not allow tourists inside.

Definitely make it a priority to spend an afternoon in Brickfields, you will not regret it!

Location : Brickfields close to KL Sentral Station and Perdana Botanical Gardens Price : Free to walk around but don’t miss out on the delicious food Duration : 1 to 1.5 hours depending on if you sit down to eat When should you go:  During the afternoon or lunchtime. How to get there:  Take one of the many trains to KL Sentral Station.

21. Try incredible food at Taman Connaught Nightmarket

Taman Connaught Nightmarket is one of the city’s best-kept secrets amongst tourists. The market only takes place once a week on Wednesday nights and is another one of my favourite cheap things to do in Kuala Lumpur (I know I say this for every single attraction on this list, they’re all just too good).

You will mostly find food and snacks at Taman Connaught Market although there are, of course, some fakes as well as the usual electronics and household items.

Taman Connaught is supposedly Kuala Lumpur’s longest market with over 2km of stalls.

I like this market because it is not as crowded with tourists as Petaling Street or other tourist hotspots. It’s located in a quiet residential neighbourhood and has a lot of foods you will not find anywhere else.

Make sure to plan how you’ll get home since there is next to no public transport and the market can be tricky to reach.

Location : In Taman Connaught, a neighbourhood outside of central Kuala Lumpur Price : Free to walk around but don’t miss out on the delicious food Duration : 1 to 2 hours When should you go:  The market officially goes from 5:00 PM until midnight but usually doesn’t start to get busy until 7:00 PM. How to get there:  Take Grab or take the green MRT line to Taman Connaught and then the T410 bus to Taman Connaught (Barat). The whole journey takes about 50 minutes from Pasar Seni LRT Station.

22. Get free drinks at ladies’ night

Many of the popular bars in Kuala Lumpur have a ladies night of some kind.

Most of the time this includes free-flow drinks after or before a certain time for girls. Most bars offer ladies’ nights on either Wednesdays or Thursdays.

Unfortunately, most of the time ladies’ nights also means an increased number of very persistent and pushy male patrons, which can make the experience uncomfortable and even dangerous if you are travelling alone.

Make sure to never leave your drinks unattended and do not leave the bar with anyone you do not know. Only go to these events with a friend or a group of girls. I wouldn’t recommend going by yourself. Drinks at ladies’ nights also usually have low-quality alcohol so adjust your expectations.

This all doesn’t sound very appealing but all warnings aside you should definitely make use of ladies’ night when you’re in KL. You’ll have a lot of fun and be able to enjoy bars you wouldn’t be able to usually afford.

Since ladies’ nights events change all the time I don’t really want to recommend specific ones, just in case they’re not on while you’re in KL, but I’ve had a great time at Six by Saro, Red Room and Arte Bar. If you’re not on a tight budget why not check out KL’s famous speakeasies and secret bars ?

Location : Most bars around Bukit Bintang and Changkat have ladies’ nights but there are also some in KLCC, Chinatown and Bangsar Price : Drinks for ladies are free while men have to pay regular prices Duration : Most bars have a time frame during which the drinks are free When should you go:  Wednesday and Thursday nights How to get there:  Take a Grab if you’re out late as trains stop running and you should not be out walking by yourself at night

The items on this list are not free but very cheap. Check them out if you are on a budget but still want to experience the city.

23. Try Dharma Realm Guan Yin Sagely Monastery and other cheap places to eat in Kuala Lumpur

Eating cheap can be easy in KL, but if you don’t pay attention you’ll end up spending a lot more money than you have to.

Dining in tourist restaurants, especially those around China Town and KLCC can cost almost as much as a meal in Europe would. To find the hidden spots where a meal will cost you only RM7 (≈ 1,50€) you have to be smart and know where to go.

My favourite place to eat in all of KL is Dharma Realm Guan Yin Sagely Monastery which is located a 7-minute walk from Petronas Towers and KLCC Park.

This Buddhist temple serves an all-vegetarian lunch buffet from Monday to Friday that is about as cheap as it gets in KL.

I have managed to get a full plate of food for RM 6 (~ €1.30). They always have a rotating selection of dishes and daily specials including custom-made soups and noodle dishes cooked fresh.

They also serve desserts, fresh fruits and different drinks. All dishes are prepared fresh and some even right in front of your eyes.

Just remember that the food is served in the back of a monastery and you should dress appropriately and be respectful when entering the temple premises.

Location : Just a 7-minute walk from the Petronas Towers Price : Depending on what you order, a meal will cost anywhere from RM 6 (~ €1.30) to RM 10 (~ €2) Duration : Spend as much time as you like When should you go:  Lunch is available on weekdays from 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM although it is best to go before 1:00 PM when the buffet still has a good selection How to get there:  Take the red LRT line to Ampang Park (5-minute walk) or KLCC Station (7-minute walk)

24. Learn about history at the National Museum

Kuala Lumpur National Museum is located next to the Perdana Botanical Gardens and can be easily reached via the Muzium Negara MRT stop. Although it might look deceivingly close to KL Sentral on a map, I would not recommend trying to walk there. There are multiple large highways between the two and walking around them takes more than 30 minutes.

A Grab will get you there in less than 5 minutes and rarely costs more than RM 5 (~ €1).

A ticket to the Museum costs RM 5 (~ €1), which is a great price. It is not the largest museum I have visited but the size is decent enough to spend at least an hour here, maybe two if you take your time looking at each exhibit.

The museum focuses on the history of Malaysia by dividing it into four sections. Section A is a prehistoric exhibit, B explains the Malay kingdoms, C is about the colonial era and D is Malaysia today.

There is definitely a heavy focus on colonial times and how Malaysia gained independence.

All in all, I really enjoyed this museum as it shows you a different perspective of history and it has some really cool artefacts. For the price of RM 5 (~ €1), I think it’s well worth a visit especially if you’re trying to escape the perpetual rain in KL for a few hours.

The museum offers free guided tours in English, French, Japanese, Malay and Mandarin.

Location : Next to Perdana Botanical Gardens Price : RM 5 (~ €1) Duration : 1 to 2 hours When should you go:  The museum is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM except for some public holidays. It’s rarely crowded. How to get there:  Take the dark green MRT line (Sungai Buloh – Kajang) to Muzium Negara station or take a Grab from KL Sentral.

25. Go hiking at Kuala Lumpur Forest Eco Park (formerly Bukit Nanas)

Update: Unfortunately, the KL Forest Eco Park is no longer free to visit and now costs RM40 per person to enter, which is not really worth it in my opinion. If you’re on a budget, skip this one.

A great place to visit is Kuala Lumpur’s, Forest Eco Park. This is a tiny jungle located right in the heart of KL, only around a 20-minute walk from the famous Petronas Towers.

A trail of hanging bridges has been built throughout the forest which lets tourists experience nature from above. It sits at the foot of the KL Tower and is easy to get to from the city centre.

You can get there via the Bukit Nanas Monorail Station or Dang Wangi LRT station and the park has two entrances, one on top of the hill next to KL Tower and one at the bottom.

If you are taking the LRT or Monorail there I would recommend starting at the bottom entrance and working your way up. In my opinion, it is easier to climb the hill via the bridges and walkways rather than the road that leads up as well.

If you are taking a Grab or taxi it is easier to start at the top and walk down.

Entrance to the Forest Eco Park Kuala Lumpur is completely free. The opening hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

It is rarely very crowded so it does not really matter when you go. Make sure to take insect repellent and watch out for the monkeys.

Location:  Northwest of KLCC, about 20 minutes walking from Petronas Towers Price:  RM 40 Duration:  About 45 Minutes When should you go:  The park is open to visitors from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM every day. It is rarely very crowded. How to get there:  Monorail to Bukit Nanas or LRT to Dang Wangi

Cheap or free things to do in Kuala Lumpur FAQ

Kuala Lumpur is actually a very affordable city and there are a lot of free or cheap activities available both indoor and outdoor. Only alcohol can be expensive.

The free GoKL buses are a great way to get around Kuala Lumpur on a budget.

Who doesn’t love free things? You would definitely agree with us that the best things in life are free, especially when we’re looking to save some dough while still having fun. 1. Wander through KL Forest Eco Park

This hidden treasure is one of the oldest forest reserves in Malaysia. Take a moment to flee from the concrete jungle and start this little adventure of yours with a 200m worth of canopy walk. Get ready to dive into refreshing greenery offering an excellent aerial view of the surrounding forest and city skyline, so beautiful! A rainforest oasis right in the middle of the capital city, this is definitely an experience you shouldn’t miss!

2. Visit the Petronas Twin Towers

Petronas Twin Towers was designed by an Argentinian architect, Cesar Pelli. The building was once the tallest building in the world from 1998 until 2004. The beauty of its monochromatic tones and steel panels, so Instagrammable! Of course, there are many other activities to do around the two corn-shaped building.

You can take a stroll at KLCC Park. It is a 50-acre garden to provide a touch of greenery for the Petronas Twin Towers and the areas surrounding it. Not to mention, the Lake Symphony with the water fountains can shoot water up to a height of 42m. It’s nothing short of romantic to stroll through the double-decker sky bridge between the two towers with the Lake Symphony show stealing the attention.

3. Climb rainbow stairs at Batu Caves

Batu Caves is a site of Hindu temple and shrine. The temple itself is approximately 100 years old whereas the limestone formation is 400 million years old. After going through a facelift. the vibrant new look comprises of colourful 272 steps.

At the entrance, you will notice a monumental statue of Hindu deity Lord Murugan before the colourful steps in the background. While you’re stepping on layers of rainbows, you will notice monkeys just hanging around and there will be bats flying around in the cave! Just ready your camera and take some photos to live up your Instagram feed!

4. Visit Thean Hou Temple

This six-tiered Buddhist temple is dedicated to the heavenly mother, Thean Hou. It’s worth mentioning that the temple has touches of both traditional and modern architecture and is very rich in colour. You will find dragon inspired decoration on the rooftops and colourful lanterns, red and yellow, welcoming you into the temple. This temple is worth the feed, inner peace and a sense of going back in time to discover its amazing architecture from the old times.

5. Stroll in the Perdana Botanical Gardens

Originally created as part of a recreational park but planted with collections of tropical plants, the garden has been rehabilitated and turned into a Botanical Garden. Here you can explore the well-established themed gardens, soothing waterfalls and well-maintained landscaped gardens. Despite being in the middle of a bustling metropolis. this is a perfect place to enjoy the ambience of being in a tropical rainforest.

6. Enjoy the National Art Gallery

This four-storey gallery is home to several of nation’s leading artists and designers. Featuring over 2,500 works of art, this is the place where you can appreciate and admire the art while you are in the city of Kuala Lumpur. It displays paintings, sculptures, batik and other works done by artists from Malaysia and all over the world. Depending on when you visit, you’ll also get the chance to appreciate any number of touring exhibitions as well as experimental works.

7. Tour the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre

Established in 1885, Royal Selangor has deemed the maker of the world’s finest pewter. Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by a modern glass-clad foyer set within scenic lush landscaping. The best part is you can take the most Instagrammable shot here, with the world’s largest giant tankard which recognised by the Guinness World of Records!

Royal Selangor continuously pushes the boundaries of design while staying true to their craftsmanship. You can wander through their museum and gallery to see all their designs! For those up to the challenge, you can try hammering a pewter sheet to get a feel of the process. This is where you can learn everything about pewter.

8. Pay a visit to Bank Negara Malaysia Museum

BNM Museum is designed to be an informal educational avenue for anyone who seeks a greater understanding of the Malaysian economy and its economic history. This place is full of interesting facts and, at this museum, you can learn all about money through interactive games and computerised activities.

Additionally, the museum consists of several galleries including the Economics Gallery, Islamic Finance Gallery, Numismatics Gallery and Children’s Gallery. One of the most striking features in Bank Negara Malaysia Museum is the Nautilus Staircase that begins from the lobby and links every floor. The spiral symbolically reflects the desire for knowledge that never stops and this is definitely the perfect spot for taking pictures!

9. Get your culture fix at the National Textile Museum

National Textiles Museum is housed in one of the city’s most impressive colonial-era buildings. This museum is well worth a visit even for those not fascinated about textiles. The exhibit is divided into four galleries that display Malaysia’s textile history. Including textiles, accessories and costumes, as well as, the tools, materials and the techniques. Whether it is Batik, Songket or Pua Kumbu, the unique style, and design of Malaysian textiles are synonymous with elegance and beauty.

This garden showcases various species of orchid as well as a centre where conservation of orchids and the study of them are done. You will be able to see over 800 species of orchids and a total of 6000 orchids all together. It is the perfect place to get some respite from the frenetic city while feasting your eyes on brilliant blossoms.

13. Explore the historical parts at Merdeka Square

Hands down, Dataran Merdeka is undoubtedly the best historical landmark in all Malaysia! This is the historical place where the Union Flag was lowered and the Malayan flag was raised for the very first time on 31st August 1957. Of course, it is also the usual venue for all Merdeka Parades.

Besides, this landmark is great for photographs with perfectly green lawns and a centrepiece of the tallest flagpole in the world displaying the Jalur Gemilang. On top of that, there’s the picturesque nineteenth-century building Sultan Abdul Samad Building right at the background. You can for sure try to take a wholesome scenic shot of the magnificent building.

14. Take Instagrammable photos at Changkat Bukit Bintang

One of the coolest street arts in KL belongs on the streets of Changkat. Depicting a river, the street art extends to the ground as well as its surrounding walls. Featuring an extremely realistic appeal with the tiny ripple leading to pool water and different white and blue accents are added to the “river” to make it appear natural. The mosque has a large capacity of 15,000 people and is surrounded by lush greenery which expands to a 13-acre land. With no cost needed to enter the place, you can visit the sacred halls during specific hours of the day. Before entering the mosque, you will be given a floor-length robe to put on by an attendant. Leave the shoes outside of the building before entering, immerse in the beauty of the bold and modern building that marks a symbol of the Islamic country of Malaysia.

Free Things To Do In Kuala Lumpur 

1. Wander around the Perdana Botanical Garden

The Perdana Botanical Garden features a collection of tropical plants, surrounded by lake and mini waterfall. Fresh air and a relaxing ambience are what you can expect here. Most importantly, it’s a perfect place for a nature-themed Instagram post!

2. A walk at the KL Forest Eco Park

13 Exciting Things To Do In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I ’ve wanted to go to Kuala Lumpur since a colleague told me about it 20 years ago. It stayed with me for years as a dream destination. I finally went there this year and got an idea of its allure. A blend of old heritage sites and modern buildings mixed with a blend of cultures creates a sensory experience everywhere you go. Learning about the tin-mining history that helped create the multicultural dynamic is fascinating.

Here are 15 of the best things to do when you visit Kuala Lumpur.

1. Petronas Towers

You can’t go to Kuala Lumpur without visiting these towers. You can see them from around the capital. For me, having lost my towers (I’m from New York City), I found it comforting to see these towers and explore them. You can certainly enjoy photos from different angles around the base of the towers, but there are two extra activities I’d recommend:

Walk The Sky Bridge

You have to purchase tickets for this experience. With prices in Malaysia generally cheap, this activity is a little expensive, comparatively. But, it was completely worth it. Sky Bridge is on level 41 and 42 of the towers. You have about 15 minutes to enjoy walking the bridge and taking photos before you head up to the top of the towers for some amazing city-wide views.

Attend An Evening Light Show

Every night at 8 p.m., there’s a light show at the back of Petronas Towers. It’s around a lake. If you don’t see the lake, you’re on the wrong side. Just walk through the tower you’re in, and on the other side, you should find that lake. Everyone gathers around to watch. I particularly liked sitting on the grass mound; there’s only one and you can’t miss it. Somehow, it felt like a night at summer camp with the heat and entertainment.

2. Chinatown

This is one of Kuala Lumpur’s main areas with good reason: You can walk through and enjoy delicious foods. In fact, I did a free walking tour my first day there and ate a tea egg. It’s the most delicious egg I’ve ever eaten. Chinatown also offers beautiful street art and a temple where locals pray for their children to pass their exams. (I wondered why the children don’t go to that temple and wish for their exams to be canceled!)

3. Brickfields

Otherwise known as “Little India,” this is a fun area to walk around and feel like you’ve been transported to another country. One store has loud Indian music playing that’s so happy, I almost started dancing in the street. There are many stores where you can buy food items and Indian clothing. Of course, while there, treat yourself to some Indian food!

4. Central Market

This was my favorite market to shop in. On the bottom floor are mostly high-quality crafts and goods, many of which are hand made. On the upper floor is some of the least expensive clothing I found in Malaysia. I needed some attire to tolerate the heat and was impressed with the quality for so little money. It’s also next to another place not to be missed: the mouth of the Klang River. There’s a beautiful view, and if you walk around the river, you can visit a mosque, if it’s during opening hours.

5. National Mosque Of Malaysia

I find it fascinating to visit mosques, temples, and churches when I travel. I arrived at the National Mosque of Malaysia near closing time and chatted with a lovely woman who works there. She quickly found three men to give me a tour. I had to don a full robe complete with a hood which, in the Malaysian heat, is not the most comfortable experience. The tour was excellent and I was allowed to watch one of the prayer sessions. The best part was being allowed to ask my guides all the questions I wanted about their religious practices. I was given a copy of the Quran as a gift.

6. Perdana Botanical Garden

This botanical garden is quite large. In fact, I thought I had seen the whole garden, until a week later, I ended up finding an entirely other side of it! There’s a lake, a small herd of deer in an enclosure, and enough nature to enjoy an afternoon.

7. Nighttime Bus Tour

This is a city that literally lights up at night. Make sure to take one of the evening buses around the city to drink in all the neighborhoods and how they dazzle in the lighting. The bus guide will provide some historic information and you’ll be given a few minutes to get off the bus at a few locations.

Pro Tips: Arrive early if you want to sit on the upper deck. Upstairs offers both covered and uncovered seats. Another tip, if you do sit upstairs and want to keep your seat after getting off the bus, consider leaving something on your seat.

8. Walking Food Tour

There’s a lot of food to try in Malaysia, in general. Frankly, I found it overwhelming. I was delighted to find a walking food tour with a lovely guide. She took us around Chinatown and we tasted sweets and durian, drank cocktails on a hotel roof with a view, and ate one of the most delicious chicken pot meals I had while in Malaysia.

9. Bukit Bintang

I loved this area of Kuala Lumpur. Between the beautiful street art, Jalan Alor food market street (which comes alive at night), and Times Square (where all the shopping centers converge), you can spend hours discovering wonderful places. If you want a foot massage, there’s several shops on your way to Jalan Alor, and there’s a restaurant row as well, if you prefer.

10. Heli Bar

This is definitely touristy and over-priced, but another “worth it!” experience. I found it magical to have the entire city surround me at that height, lit up majestically at night. You can grab a table and stare, and later, walk around the circular roof and take loads of photos.

11. Huskiss

This is a wonderful way to spend an hour. On the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur is a place where you can spend an hour with about 10 huskies. You can pet them, sit on the couch with them, learn about the breed, and smile a lot. It’s not just for kids. The owner is a 26-year-old entrepreneur and takes excellent care of the dogs. Yes, they have plenty of cold air, which is important in Malaysia!

12. KL Forest Eco Park

Another surprise is this large park with walkways throughout. It was so large I didn’t get to visit all of it. You’ll have nature all around you because you’re actually walking through the only rainforest in Kuala Lumpur! It’s located right next to KL Tower. 

Pro Tip: The park is sometimes closed during or after inclement weather. This is because there are some areas with fairly steep slopes.

13. Royal Selangor Pewter Factory

You may know that tin mining put Malaysia on the map. You may not know there’s a pewter factory in Kuala Lumpur. Take the free tour, discover Royal Selangor’s history, and see how pewter items are made at the factory. The real treat, in my opinion, is that you can make either a pewter bowl or jewelry while there! I decided to make jewelry and was fascinated to see how quickly pewter cools. The teacher showed us how to use molds and pour our own creations. I did both and came away with a necklace, a bracelet, and a keychain.

Kuala Lumpur surprised me. It’s a wonderful blend of cultures, food markets, and neighborhoods. There’s so much to see and do, you’ll have a hard time fitting it all in! Check out my videos on Kuala Lumpur if you want to see, rather than read, my experiences. 

Pro Tip: The subway system takes some getting used to and Uber is so inexpensive you might skip the subway and just take a rideshare.
