52 Of The Best Things To Do In Auckland This Winter

By Alice Rich

11th Aug 2022

Friends walk along Karekare beach.

Hello darkness, our old friend. The days are shorter and the temperature has plummeted but it’s not all bad news. Whether you’re all about hibernation or giving your winter boots a workout, there are loads of activities to get amongst, from dreamy self-care and carbilicious goodness to epic adventures and getaways.

Here are 51 things to do in Auckland this winter that will (almost) distract you from missing summer.

Embrace It | Winter turns into a true wonderland when it snows… but Auckland winter didn’t get that memo (awkward) so your best bet is to hop to SnowPlanet for a ski sesh. While you’re at it, put Frozen on loop, because the cold never bothered you anyway.

Live Your Mulled Wine Fantasy  | Nothing says winter warmer better than a mug of scrumptious spiced wine spiked with oranges. Trawl Tāmaki Makaurau’s best bars and you might just find exactly that.

Choose Shaken, Not Stirred, With A Kick  | In the mood for something stronger than mulled wine? Grab a coffee. And a cocktail.  In the same glass .

Build A Sandman | Who says snow is better than sand anyway? Rock up to one of the best beaches in Tāmaki Makaurau and whip up a sandperson, using seaweed and seashells for its nose, buttons and scarf. Just be ready to run if the wind whips your new pal into a sandstorm.

Treat Yo’self  | Keep warm beneath hot stones at one of Auckland’s  best day spas . It’s cosy self-care and one of our favourite things to do in winter.

Celebrate Midwinter Christmas | What screams Christmas more than a ride in a sleigh? Last we checked Auckland’s out of sleighs (something about delayed shipping from the North Pole…) but a tuk-tuk tour of the city is your next best thing. And, if you ask really nicely, your driver might be down to don reindeer antlers.

Tell Seasonal Affective Disorder To Suck It | If winter tends to bring you down, book into Hana ’s infrared sauna and red light therapy for a moment of rejuvenation.

Hail The Return Of The Mac | Nope, we’re not talking about Macklemore but once you’ve wrapped your lips around Auckland’s best mac ‘n’ cheese you will 100% be putting your hands up like the ceiling can’t hold you.

Take The Plunge  | From Wim Hoff to Art Green, everybody seems to be into  ice baths  these days and, in winter, just about any body of water qualifies. Lucky you.

A narrow pathway through a cave is lit with blue light.

Take Shelter Underground | Raincheck the weather and explore these caves instead—but if you see a ring, don’t pick it up (if you know, you know).

Shop Savvy  | Threadbare clothing got you needing new duds? A brand new coat could set you back but a day of fun spent scouring  Auckland’s best op shops  will mean you leave with a bunch of new gems, and a whole lot of dollars still in your pocket. After some eco-friendly knits?  We've got you covered.

Crack The Code | Prove your crew’s the ultimate team by beating an escape room before the time runs out. Bonus points if you dress up as Scooby-Doo’s mystery-hunting gang.

Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow  | Whether you like to break it down to house, electro, live jazz, Top50, metal, bossa nova or something else entirely, cut some serious shapes on the dancefloor at Tāmaki Makaurau’s  best nightclubs  and you’ll be warm in no time. Winter who?

Winter-Proof Your Skincare Routine  | A new season brings new challenges for your skin. Glow all winter long with the best new beauty products to slather on your visage.

Manifest Your Way To Warmth  | Kid yourself you’re in Indonesia with a culinary trip to  Bali Nights . Stare into that steaming plate of rendang and do your best to channel hot weather and a beautiful beach.

Challenge Your Mates To Hot Ones | Heat up without boosting your power bill by staging your own game of chilli sauce-tasting YouTube sensation Hot Ones . Several sauces in and you’ll have 99 problems but the winter cold won’t be one of them.

Level Up Your Hibernation Game  | Now if you are going to hibernate this winter, you best do it right. Do a snack run, build a fort, then watch everything on Netflix from within said fort, snacks in hand.

Kick Back In Front Of The Biggest Screen Of All  | If you’re in denial about being in hibernation, you can keep the illusion alive with a trip to the  cinema . Eat all the popcorn because, winter.

A massive golden statue of a person emerges from rock at Wētā Workshop Unleashed.

Have A Wild Time With Wētā  | Rain-proof your plans with a tour of  Wētā Workshop Unleashed . Mind-blowing for little kids and big kids alike, stormy weather is the perfect primer for plunging into Wētā’s world of horror, sci-fi and fantasy.

Get Your Talons Did | Brighten up the dreary winter palette with a pop of colour and a seriously good manicure from Tāmaki Makaurau’s best nail salons .

Leave  | Some would argue this should have been first on the list but one of the best things you can do in Auckland in winter is to leave. Jump on a plane, stat. In no time at all, you’ll be sipping margaritas on a beach in  Fiji  or  The Cook Islands . Winter done right.

Have A Boujee Night Out | Dress to impress and take shelter in Caretaker . With a bespoke cocktail in hand you won’t even care about the crummy winter weather.

Get Steamy | When the temperature plummets saunas and steam rooms are where it’s at. The Tepid Baths has both, plus an Olympic-style pool if you’re wanting to get some laps in.

Get Even Steamier | Huddle away with your significant other(s) with a  romantic getaway  that’ll bring the heat even on the stormiest night.

Strike A Pose | If you prefer your steam (mostly) upright skip along to your local hot yoga class and experience the added value that comes with trying to hold your foot against an impressively sweaty leg. That moment when your tree pose becomes a slippery elm...

New Do, New You  | Tame your mane, or—better yet—channel your winter avatar, reinventing yourself at one of  these  hair salons.

Go On An Adventure | Wrap up warm, brave the elements and be your own heater (#empowered) as you stride it out along Auckland’s best walks and hikes .

Eat Your Weight In Doughnuts  | Everything you need to fulfil this glorious mission is right  here .

Get Your Steps In While Staring Quizzically At Art  | You might not feel like going for a walk outdoors but spend an hour or two at one of Tāmaki Makaurau’s  art-adorned galleries  and you’ll hit your 10k before you know it.

Pick Up A New Hobby  | Make use of all the forced time indoors by learning a new skill or three. From the fun and the frivolous to the deeply creative, Auckland’s home to a bunch of  exciting workshops .

A big bowl of steaming hot ramen in an orange soup topped with thin ribbons of radish and half a bulb of bok choy.

Order A Hug In A Bowl | Piping hot and packed full of flavour, who needs mittens when you can hug a bowl of ramen ?

Battle Winter… With A Book (Or Fifty) | Read all the books on your bedside table. When you’re done, read these too, then scour all our best independent bookshops for more.

Discover Tāmaki Makaurau’s Hidden Gems | Work your way around Auckland’s hidden restaurants, cafes and bars. Need a hint? We’ve spilled all the secrets here .

Start The Day Like You Mean It | Grey skies and endless rain can be a bit of a dampener on motivation but tuck into an epic feed from Honey Bones or another of Tāmaki Makaurau’s lords of brunches and you’ll be firing on all cylinders.

Help Those In Need | Winter is often the hardest time for vulnerable people and communities. If you’d like to pitch in you could knit some beanies or blankets for Auckland City Mission to share with our street whānau.

Go On A Hot Chocolate Crawl | The hot chocolate game is strong in Auckland city which begs the question—which mug of choc is the mightiest? Plan a crawl and find out, for the sake of science.

Hit The Road | Bundle into the car and escape the city for a weekend (or longer if you’ve got a kickass WFH situation going) taking a road trip to a cosy Airbnb , cabin or tiny home .

Strengthen, Lengthen, And Flex | Let the cold drive you indoors… into the gym. Tāmaki Makaurau is humming with kickass boutique gyms like Studio Box , STRONG Pilates , and Westward Cycle , that are sure to get those endorphins pumping.

Pop A Plate Of Dumplings  | Warm your belly with delicious doughy bundles of joy a.k.a. dumplings. Find the 10 best damn dumpling spots in town,  here .

A swanky platter of crackers, dip, olives, bread and cheese sits beside a fire in an oil drum.

Build A Fire | There’s something primal about being around a fire (and something delectable about freshly melted s’mores). Step one for building a fire? Learning to wield an axe. Sounds like it’s time for a trip to Sweet Axe Throwing .

Win Flat Masterchef  | Tired of eating the same old thing every week? Challenge your flatties to Masterchef. To make sure you secure the win, level up your cooking skills first with a class at  Sachie’s Kitchen .

Get To Know Your Local  | Explore Auckland’s precincts and get the lowdown on the coolest places around.  Ponsonby ,  Takapuna ,  Parnell ,  Newmarket ,  Devonport  and Onehunga  have got it going onnnn.

Adopt A Fluffy Friend  | Aren’t dogs the greatest? The colder months are sure to be a whole lot better with a fluffy pal in tow, but this pup isn’t just for winter—it’s for life—so make sure you’re in it for the long haul before  signing those papers .

Soak In A Bubble Bath  | Realtalk, there’s never a bad time for a bubble bath, but winter is one of the best times to kick back and relax, with a cheeky vino in hand. For the best bath bombs, look no further than  Lush .

Call In The Professionals  | Don’t have a bath? No problem. Head along to a top float tank  and float your way to happiness and warmth.

Get Lowkey Competitive | Head to a board games cafes like Cakes n Ladders , Dice & Fork or Dice Goblin and settle in for some friendly yet cut-throat competition, or host your own shindig at home.

Go All In On Fondu  | Melted cheesy goodness is a party any day of the week, especially when it’s cold out. From time to time  Wander Cafe & Bistro  in Wynyard Quarter hosts a mean Raclette night so keep an eye on their socials and when the next event pops up, nab yourself a ticket. You don't want to end up sitting at home wishing you fon-did.

Make The Most | Weather forecast predicting lashings of rain? Tempt fate and head to a park with your boo and if it starts pelting down, re-enact The Notebook’s famous kissing scene because let’s be real, it’s on our bucket list.

Rangitoto Volcano - Auckland

What's In This Guide?

Planning a trip to Auckland and the surrounding area? You have definitely landed in the right spot. There are so many amazing places to visit near Auckland which shows just how diverse New Zealand’s North Island is.

However, we understand that travel time can be limited, so here we’ve selected eight of the best destinations.

Relax in the thermal hot springs and explore hidden caves a few hours south of Auckland. Or, discover black sand beaches and tropical rainforests just under an hour west of the city.

This article contains loads of useful information on these top destinations. You will probably even discover some destinations you would never have otherwise considered.

The best way to get to most of these destinations is to drive. I highly recommend checking prices on RentalCars.com . You will find all the big brands like Avis and Europcar listed here but with huge discounts on rental cars.

And of course, if you have any further questions, please ask us in the comments section below.

Islands Near Auckland – Hauraki Gulf

The Hauraki Gulf is framed by Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour in the west, the Hauraki Plains to the south, the protruding Coromandel Peninsula in the east, and the Barrier Islands to the north. For those with a little more time, we’ve covered nine great islands near Auckland in this detailed article . However, if you’ve only got a couple of days for the whole region, then Waiheke and Rangitoto might be for you.

1. Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is on the top of every visitor’s list of places to visit near Auckland. It’s a 40-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland across the sparkling Waitemata Harbour and a world away from big city living. It is frequently voted by Lonely Planet, Travel & Leisure Magazine, and many other international travel experts as one of the top island escapes in the world. There is a public bus network, a hop-on-hop-off bus, bike rentals and car rentals available which makes getting around the island so easy.

You will find sandy, pristine beaches, lined with the unique New Zealand Pohutukawa trees which bloom with rich red flowers at Christmas time. Becuase of this, these iconic Kiwi trees are also known as the New Zealand Christmas trees.

One of the best things to do on Waiheke Island is to visit a boutique vineyard. These vineyards offer stunning views, wine tasting rooms, and restaurants where you can linger over a long lunch featuring delicious local and seasonal produce. Try Cable Bay and Mudbrick vineyards which are both walking distance from the ferry terminals. There is an information desk at the ferry terminal on Waiheke Island and they will help you with what’s on and where to go.

There is a great network of walking tracks throughout the Waiheke Island and around its 40km coastline, showcasing New Zealand’s flora and fauna. You can also rent a kayak, go mountain biking, or ziplining through the trees if you want some action.

Waiheke Island was once regarded as having a bohemian hippy lifestyle and still has many interesting art studios to visit. We suggest the interesting outdoor Sculpture Exhibition located on a walking trail that takes place every two years in February or March. There is also a very popular jazz festival which takes place over Easter.

2. Rangitoto Island

On your ferry trip to Waiheke Island, you’ll pass one of Auckland’s best-known landmarks, Rangitoto Island. It’s a large symmetrical, green, cone-shaped island that is actually a volcano!

Did you know that Auckland is built on a volcanic field of over 50 volcanoes? The last eruption in Auckland was Rangitoto over 600 years ago. Scientists consider these volcanoes to be dormant, rather than extinct, so there is an extremely slim chance of any of them erupting in the near future.

Did you know that Auckland is built on a volcanic field of over 50 volcanoes? The last eruption in Auckland was Rangitoto over 600 years ago

Rangitoto Island is a 25-minute ferry ride from Downtown Auckland or a two-hour kayaking trip from Auckland’s North Shore. The island was declared “pest-free” in 2011 and birdlife has flourished. It is home to dozens of sea, shore and forest birds.

There is no shop on the island, so you will need to bring your own food and drink. There are also no rubbish bins, so you will need to take your own scraps and rubbish off the island with you.

The most popular walking track is the Rangitoto Summit Track. It is an easy, but up-hill, two-hour return walk on well-formed paths along the lava fields. The Wreck Bay Track is a twisting track to Wreck Bay and Boulder Bay on the northern side of Rangitoto. These bays were once used as dumping grounds for old ships and at low tides, some of the remains can still be seen.

Another popular track is the Coastal Walk from Rangitoto Wharf to Islington Bay, which passes by boatsheds and some old 1930s baches (classic New Zealand holiday cottages) one of which is open as a museum. The track passes old quarry sites, ruins of wartime storage bases for mines, and Yankee Wharf which was built during World War II.

Be careful not to miss your ferry ride back to Auckland as there is no overnight accommodation on the island. A water taxi back to Auckland can be quite expensive.

Another very amazing island about an hour’s plane ride from Auckland is Great Barrier Island . It is one of the few places in the world with a ‘Dark Sky Sanctuary’ rating.

The Waikato Region – South of Auckland

These following two tourist attractions near Auckland can be combined into a one-day trip if you have limited time. You would need to leave Auckland before 7am, book a morning tour at Hobbiton and then head 1 hour and 15 minutes over to Waitomo for the afternoon. It would be a very busy day but is doable if necessary.

3. Hobbiton

Hobbiton - South of Auckalnd

Fans of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies visit Hobbiton in their masses. It is the third-largest tourist attraction in New Zealand.

Hobbiton is in a small rural town called Matamata about a two-hour drive from Auckland. In 1995 Peter Jackson, the director of the films, spotted the Alexander family farm in Matamata as an ideal location for some of his filming and work began. The New Zealand army was called in to build a road to the site. The original set was just a temporary build, but in 2010 it was rebuilt permanently as “The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey.”

Today you can do a tour of Hobbiton and experience the real middle earth! Take a look at Bagshot Row, Bilbo’s Bag End, the Party Tree, 44 hobbit holes and have a pint at The Green Dragon Pub. It is recommended that you book your tour in advance so that you don’t arrive at the Shire’s Rest and have to wait for a vacancy in a tour group. It gets really busy here in the high season.

4. Waitomo Caves

Waitomo Cave

Located beneath rolling green hills about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Hobbiton at the famous Waitomo Caves. These caves were created over 30 million years ago while the region was still under the ocean. There are about 300 known limestone caves in the area, and possibly more to be discovered.

There are several caving organizations that offer different experiences. Choose from a walking tour, a boat tour, a black water rafting tour, an abseiling tour, and even a ziplining tour.

The most popular tour is the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. It has a huge cavernous space where you can see the amazing limestone stalagmite and stalactite formations. The trip finishes with a silent boat ride in the dark, with thousands of illuminating glowworms sparkling overhead.

The Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave are also very popular options to visit too.

Beaches Near Auckland – The Rugged West Coast

The rugged black sand beaches on Auckland’s West Coast are some of the most unique and stunning places to visit near Auckland. We always take our overseas visitors to one or both of these beaches and they are always super impressed.

5. Piha Beach

Piha Beach - Auckland West Coast

You essentially leave Auckland behind as you pass the arty Titirangi Village located about 20 minutes southwest of the city. From there is another half-hour drive to Piha Beach on the rugged west coast.

You will reach Piha Beach by taking the Scenic Drive route. It’s a narrow road that winds its way over hills and through the green fern-laden rainforests of the Waitakere Ranges.

Along the way to Piha Beach, you can make a quick stop at the Arataki Visitors Centre. It is located in the middle of New Zealand’s native bush at the peak of a hill. Here you can get great views and learn about the cultural, colonial and natural history of the area.

Just before you reach Piha Beach there’s a left turn to Karekare Beach. This is where many scenes from the film “The Piano” were shot in the 1990s. Karekare Beach is another very rugged black sand beach with huge rolling surf.

As you drive down to the black sands of Piha Beach you will get great views of the entire coastline. The iconic Lion Rock landmark divides the beach into a northern and southern half. If you’re up for a hike, you can climb the steep trail to the top of Lion Rock for an awesome view of the beach where surfers challenge the huge waves below.

6. Muriwai Beach

Muriwai Beach - Auckland West Coast

Muriwai Beach stretches for 60 kilometers along the dramatic Tasman Sea with huge ocean swells and rolling breakers. This windswept, black sand beach is situated on Auckland’s west coast, about a one hour drive from the city through farmland, vineyards, and small rural towns.

While Muriwai Beach is a popular spot for surfing and windsurfing, it is also renowned for its large gannet colony. Viewing platforms located atop of the cliffs at the southern end of the beach offer close up views of these huge birds. Gannets weigh about two and a half kilos and have a wingspan of around two meters. From August to March about 1200 pairs of Gannets mate, nest and have their chicks on these windswept clifftops. You can normally see the chicks throughout December and January.

There is no public transport to Muriwai Beach so you will need a car or take a West Coast tour to get here. The last 15 minutes of the drive the beach goes down a narrow and winding section of road through native bush. Near the end of the road, opposite the local café, is a left turn that takes you up to the carpark. This is where the walking track to the Gannet Colony viewing platform begins.

New Zealand’s Thermal Area

Three hours south of Auckland is the not-to-be-missed geothermal area around Rotorua. There are so many unique things to do in this area. You won’t forget the unique smell! Rotorua has been called ‘The Sulphur City’ because it has a unique pungent aroma that smells very much like rotten eggs, but you do become accustomed to it over time!

Rotorua - Thermal Region

Rotorua is situated on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua. Lakes and streams are abundant in the area, while trout fishing and white water rafting are a few activities that you may wish to take part in.

Rotorua is most famous for its geothermal activity. Hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and spouting geysers can be seen at various parks and locations around the area. A few popular attractions are the Pohutu Geyser at Whakarewarewa, the Waiopu Thermal Wonderland, and the Waimangu Volcanic Valley.

Other must-visit places are the Rotorua Polynesian Spa which was voted as a Top 10 World Day Spa by Conde Nast Traveller, the Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park where you can see a live kiwi, the Rotorua Agradome for an entertaining farm show, the magnificent Redwoods at Whakarewarewa Forest. So Many Places! So Little Time!

8. Matakana Village Farmer’s Market & Goat Island Marine Reserve

Goat Island Marine Reserve - North of Auckland

The Matakana Village Farmer’s Market is a great spot to visit on a Saturday morning. Matakana is about one hour north of Auckland. It is a quaint village with interesting boutique stores, art galleries, and a great little cinema complex.

The Farmer’s Market is laden fresh organic food. It sells a wonderful array of tasty foods like fresh oysters, the prawn tacos, homemade bread, local cheese, honey, and chutney. You can sit by the river, listen to live music and enjoy whitebait, paua or mussel fitters and a great cup of coffee!

Ten minutes past Matakana is the very upmarket Omaha Beach and fifteen minutes further on is the Goat Island Marine Reserve with the best snorkeling and scuba diving near Auckland.

There are so many interesting places to visit near Auckland. We hope that you get a chance to visit and enjoy some of these top destinations. When you’re finished exploring Auckland, have you thought about a cruise around New Zealand ? Here are 9 reasons why it is worth considering.

11 Best Places To Go For Winter In New Zealand [2024]

If you’re wondering where the best places to go in New Zealand in winter are, the short answer is: everywhere! Kiwi summers are great but New Zealand’s lakes and mountains are at their best in winter, not to mention the hot springs!

To make it easy for you to plan your New Zealand winter holiday, I’ve narrowed the list down to the 10 best New Zealand winter destinations, with the help of some other Kiwis and experienced New Zealand travellers.

Where To Go In New Zealand In Winter

One of the best places to visit in New Zealand in winter is the incredible city of Auckland. The city has a relatively mild winter, with temperatures ranging between 10 to 15 degrees Celsius (or 50-59 degrees Fahrenheit).

Winter is the off-season for Auckland, meaning there are fewer crowds! Flight and accommodation will be cheaper as well. You will have more space and more time to enjoy the city.

Get a bird’s eye view of the city at the Auckland Sky Tower. It’s the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere! If you’re truly brave you can bungee jump from the tower. If you prefer nature to skyscrapers, you hike Maungawhau (Mount Eden), which is a dormant volcano, for breathtaking views.

If you end up with a chilly day (or rainy day) Auckland has plenty of museums for every type of traveller. The Auckland Art Galley and Auckland War Memorial Museums have fascinating exhibits, many of which feature Maori culture.

One of the highlights of visiting Auckland in winter is the New Zealand Boutique Wine Festival. Featuring a wide variety of wines by independent wineries across New Zealand, it’s a great way to be introduced to new wines. You can meet winemakers, attend educational seminars, and even learn about pairing wine and food.

Auckland is one of the best destinations in Oceania , and should be on every traveller’s bucket list.

Waiheke Island, Auckland Region

Tucked among the emerald islands of the Hauraki Gulf just east of Auckland, Waiheke Island is renowned for its great wine and mild weather. Yes, even in winter. Partially sheltered from extreme cold and rain, Waiheke is the place to go if you want to escape New Zealand’s sometimes chilly winters.

Waiheke Island is about 40 minutes by ferry from Auckland and is a great sport for a girls’ weekend or a romantic getaway from the city. Click here to pre-book your ferry tickets .

The second-largest island in the Haruki Gulf, Waiheke is a picture-perfect snapshot of the North Island. Here vineyards crest the back of rolling green hills and sandy beaches fringe the coastline.

While the sun isn’t always a guarantee, winter brings the chance of favourable weather for outdoor pursuits such as hiking, sea kayaking or ziplining .

Of course, one of the best things to do on Waiheke Island is to explore its many vineyards on a wine tour . A particular favourite is Casita Miro with its Gaudi-inspired mosaics and Spanish tapas menu. Or Mudbrick with its panoramic views from the restaurant. Another is the award-winning Stonyridge with its impressive wine list and beautiful setting for lunch which, if you’re lucky, may be enjoyed outside surrounded by olive trees.

Where to stay on Waiheke Island

While it’s certainly possible to visit as a day trip, there are some gorgeous boutique hotels on the island too. One great choice is the Guesthouse On Queens , a highly-rated apartment in the island’s main town, Oneroa. It’s close to beaches and t he Oyster Inn , a restaurant celebrated for deliciously fresh oysters.

Hobbiton, Waikato

For a great place to visit in New Zealand during winter, head over to the Hobbiton Movie Set just outside of Matamata in the central Waikato region .

The Hobbiton Movie Set was created for the film adaptation of the Lord of the Rings book series. It was first built in 1999 and was nearly demolished after the filming of the initial trilogy was complete. 17 Hobbit Holes remained. Those were the foundation that the movie franchise’s director, Peter Jackson, came back to in 2009 when he directed the “Hobbit” movie trilogy. Hobbiton was revived and rebuilt (more permanently this time) with the 44 hobbit holes that exist there today.

As you can imagine, Hobbiton is a popular place to visit in New Zealand. However, as winter arrives and temperatures get cooler, the crowds at Hobbiton get smaller. The frequent low-fog and dewy mornings make for some beautiful pictures of the location. (Without many people in them which is always a plus).

Something to look forward to about a wintertime visit to Hobbiton is warming up in the Green Dragon after your tour. Order something warm to eat and drink and enjoy it by the fire. The perfect ending to the perfect day.

Click here to book your Hobbiton Movie Set Tour online

Rotorua, Bay of Plenty

Rotorua is a small city on the North Island yet it is a very cultural place that has a deep-rooted relationship with the Maori. It is the  best place to experience the Maori Culture  in New Zealand.

In winter, a wonderful and soothing experience in Rotorua is soaking in a hot spring that is coming from the Whakarewarewa Valley . There are a number of spa villas and resorts and they are popular among not only tourists but also locals.

Te Puia is a popular attraction in Rotorua. The Pohutu geyser is the largest geyser in the southern hemisphere, the word “Pohutu” means “big splash”. In Te Puia, visitors can discover the eruption of this natural spectacle, and also, look for a kiwi bird and appreciate Maori arts and performances.

To truly get in touch with the Maori, head to the Mitai Maori Village, where the villagers will take you on a journey to learn everything from the Maori lifestyle, music, hand games, traditional food, and more – click here to book tickets .

No visit to Rotorua is complete without tasting an authentic local dessert, the Pavlova. This is a meringue-based cake that is named after the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova.

Where to stay in Rotorua

For accommodation, stay at Quest Rotorua Central , a cozy and intimate boutique hotel that is only a short walk to Rotorua’s city center and restaurant precinct. There are a number of wonderful eateries including Leonardo’s, Brew, and Sequoia.  Click here to check prices and book .

Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty

One of the best places in New Zealand to visit in winter – if you’re looking to forget that it’s winter – is Mount Maunganui. Located just outside of Tauranga on the Bay of Plenty, about 2.5 hours southeast of Auckland,

Mount Maunganui has a subtropical climate that leads to very mild winters. While it does get cold sometimes, it’s not uncommon for a July day to top 20 degrees.

Mount Maunganui is essentially a beach suburb of Tauranga, and one of the most popular North Island beaches , but visiting in winter avoids peak international tourist season (and all the summer cruise ship visitors that crowd the town). While it might be a bit chilly for a dip in the sea, winter is the perfect time for a stroll down the beach and a hike up the mountain.

The town is named for the dormant volcano Maunganui which lies at the end of the peninsula. The hike up takes 20-40 minutes, depending on your fitness level. Once at the top, you have a gorgeous view of the coast as far as the eye can see.

Mount Maunganui is a great weekend getaway from Auckland or a perfect stop on a North Island New Zealand road trip .

Spend the night at the Mission Belle Hotel and before leaving town and if you’re up for it, head out to Moturiki Island – a short walk from the hotel – at night to see if you can catch a glimpse of New Zealand’s famous little blue penguins. The smallest species of penguin, their population on the island has been decreasing rapidly in the 21 st  century, so you’ll have to get lucky!

Mount Manganui

Mount Cook, Canterbury

Visiting Aoraki Mount Cook in Winter is like entering Narnia, a magical Winter wonderland in every sense. You’ll feel amazed from the moment you turn into Mount Cook Road and see the spectacular 3724m high Aoraki Mount Cook towering over Lake Pukaki. Make sure you stop at Peter’s Lookout for a great photo, too.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mount Cook National Park is home to over 140 peaks that reach above 2000m high and 72 glaciers.

While heli flights are available to get up close and personal with these ancient glaciers, most visitors choose to view them on foot. Thankfully, the Tasman Glacier Viewpoint is just a 2.6km walk.

Hiking the iconic 10km return Hooker Valley Track in the snow – with its final views of Aoraki and Hooker Glacier – is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Mount Cook National Park . In Winter, the lakes are frozen over, with otherworldly icebergs glistening under snow-capped mountains.

Due to unpredictable weather, you’ll need snow chains and hiking boots with good grip – even the easy walks can be tricky when icy underfoot. Lookout for signage regarding avalanche risk at the beginning of any hikes (or check the Mount Cook visitor centre), and don’t hike in bad weather.

If it does rain, there’s plenty to do in Mount Cook Village. Enjoy the planetarium and fascinating museum at the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, or enjoy a meal by the fireplace at Hermitage Hotel. Easy walks such as Governers’ Bush Walk and Glencoe Walk are also good options.

And when the sky clears? Don’t miss viewing our beautiful night sky from the Aoraki Mt Cook International Dark Sky Reserve.

Methven, Canterbury

Just over an hour’s road trip from Christchurch , the gateway to the South Island, Methven is a cute resort town that needs to be on your list.  Methven sits on the doorstep of Mt Hutt, voted the best ski field in New Zealand.

Mt Hutt has the longest ski season, opening around mid-June to late October/early November each year.  It’s a fabulous ski field that combines amazing skiing without the chaos of the Queenstown ski fields.  A great range of slopes from beginner to expert as well as the highest spa pool in the country will keep you busy on a cold winter’s day.

If snow sports aren’t your thing, you can relax at the newly built Opuke Spa .  With mountain views and a focus on solar heating, you can let your worries go while soaking in the adults-only area.  Kids will enjoy the bomb zone and playing in the cave in the family pools.

Strolling into the outdoors is such a great way to appreciate winter in the Mid Canterbury region.  A drive up to the Ashburton Lakes is a must.  It’s a high country region that is surrounded by snowy mountains and still feels like that untouched hidden gem you’ve been looking for.

Where to stay at Methven

Ski Time is the place to stay in Methven, with its modern two and three bedroom apartments which are ideal for staying for the week, or basic lodge rooms, it really has something for everyone.  The onsite restaurant is superb and locals flock here from around the region. Click here to check prices and book .

Queenstown, Otago

Queenstown is at its best in winter, with a variety of events and experiences to enjoy. Immerse yourself in the picturesque, snow-covered mountains and try out some of the popular activities in Queenstown .

Spend your days skiing, snowboarding, and trying out adventure activities like bungy jumping and paragliding. Take in the stunning views around you, experience the thrill of jet boating , and warm up by a roaring fire with a drink in hand.

There are many clear days in winter, so you can see the spectacular scenery from a scenic flight – even going as far as Milford Sound for a day trip . Take the TSS Earnslaw across Lake Whakatipu and drive through the rolling vineyards in Gibbston Valley. Just be mindful of the potential for icy roads and make sure your vehicle is equipped with chains if you plan on driving in the mountains.

For the ultimate winter experience, plan your trip for late July to September, when the snow is at its best for skiing and snowboarding. The snow begins to melt away in October and November.

August brings the New Zealand Winter Games and the colourful Winter Pride event to town, making it a lively and exciting time to visit. Don’t miss the LUMA Southern Light Project, a light festival that illuminates the town.

Fiordland National Park, Southland

One of the best places to go in New Zealand in winter is Fiordland National Park on the South Island. Fiordland National Park is located on the Southwestern side of the South Island of New New Zealand and is famous for its incredible and beautiful fjords.

The park is home to the famous Milford Sound which was described by Rudyard Kipling as “the 8th wonder of the world” due to its incredible scenery. The sound is surrounded by beautiful mountains that have tall waterfalls that drop into the sound.

Fiordland National Park is a great place to visit in winter because there are far fewer tourists in the area than in the summer months which makes your landscape and wildlife viewing experience much more enjoyable as you aren’t navigating around large crowds.

There are fewer tourists in the winter because the major road to get to Milford Sound closes during the winter months. In order to access the park, you have to join a helicopter or small plane tour from a nearby city like Queenstown or cruise into the fiord.

The f light tours to Milford Sound are as enjoyable as the sound itself due to the scenic nature of the flight over the beautiful forests and fiords of the national park. There are also many opportunities to see aquatic wildlife such as dolphins and maybe even a whale if you take a cruise out from the sound into the ocean .

Some of the options for fun things to do in the park include taking a scenic cruise, wildlife watching, doing a flyover of the area, and participating in a winter guided hike.

Lake Matheson, West Coast

Lake Matheson is absolutely one of the best places to visit in New Zealand in winter – especially if you are a keen photographer! Winter sunrises provide the absolute optimal conditions to photograph the lake – which is one of the most stunning lakes in New Zealand. The lake is quite famous as you can see the perfect mirror image reflection of snow-capped Aoraki Mount Cook and Mount Tasman in its still waters.

The lake is so beautiful it will literally take your breath away, but especially if you visit during the winter you’ll have the perfect light, perfectly still conditions and probably nobody else around, which will make the experience so special!

In addition, winter sunrises sometimes have a magical red glow over the mountains due to the position of the sun, which is amazing to see!

A  walk around Lake Matheson  is one of the things you must do when you visit New Zealand in winter as the lookouts are spectacular and all provide unique views of Aoraki Mount Cook. The walk is 4.5km and it takes about 1.5 hours to walk around the whole lake, and the views generally get better the further you walk around! In particular, the ‘View of Views’ lookout and the Reflection Island lookout are spectacular. At the entrance to the walk, you’ll find the Lake Matheson Cafe – perfect for a cuppa to warm you up in the cold months!

Where to stay at Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson is located 5km from Fox Glacier town. The Lake Matheson Motel is an ideal place to stay as it takes just 8 minutes to drive to Lake Matheson.  Click here to check prices and book .

New Zealand Winter Itinerary

There are so many ways to do a New Zealand trip, for starters you could try our North Island itinerary or South Island itinerary which both have 1-2 week options, or if you wanted a specific New Zealander winter trip plan then here’s what I’d recommend:

  • Auckland 2 days
  • Mount Maunganui 1 day
  • Rotorua 2 days
  • Wellington 2 days
  • Christchurch 1-2 days
  • Methven 1 day
  • Lake Tekapo 1 day
  • Mount Cook 1 day
  • Wanaka 1-2 days
  • Queenstown 3-4 days
  • Fiordland National Park 1 day
  • Lake Matheson 1 day

This is a roughly 3 week itinerary which is the absolute minimum you would need to see both islands of New Zealand.

It’s easiest to do this with a car but you could take the bus (check out my guide to travelling New Zealand by bus) if you’re on a tight budget. You can also fly from Wellington to Christchurch to save time.

Tips for travelling NZ in Winter

Travelling New Zealand in winter isn’t significantly more difficult than in summer, in fact you might find it easier since there are less crowds at the beaches and popular tourist detsinations.

The main differences are usually around travel times. When there is severe bad weather (which only happens a few times a year and mostly from Wellington south) then flights can be delayed or rerouted. Some of the mountain roads (such as the roads into Tongariro, Queenstown, Wanaka, and heading to the West Coast) also occasionally close.

Make sure to allow time in your itinerary to address this and rent a 4WD car if you are self-driving for extra safety. If you do decide to travel around New Zealand in a car, make sure you educate yourself on the New Zealand road conditions to ensure a safe trip.

New Zealand weather can be changeable, particularly in the mountain areas, so always carry a rain coat and layers, even if it looks sunny out.

FAQ about visiting New Zealand in Winter

How cold does it get in new zealand in winter.

New Zealand is pretty close to Antarctica so in the southern regions it gets very cold. Not Canada cold but still. The North Island is fairly temperate but from Christchurch south you can expect some below-freezing temperatures in the winter months.

Is winter a good time to visit New Zealand?

If you want to hit the ski slopes, see snow or just avoid crowds then winter is a great time to visit New Zealand. Most destinations are quieter and hotels are cheaper in winter but the weather isn’t extreme enough to worry about things being closed.

When is winter in New Zealand?

Winter in New Zealand is from June to August, although in the bottom half of the South Island it can be cold from May to October. Ski season is at the end of winter, typically from July to September.

Does it snow in winter in New Zealand?

Yes! Not everywhere, but frequently enough that it’s not hard to see snow. On the North Island it generally only snows on the summits of the highest mountains while on the South Island, some of the towns get a decent blanket of snow every year.

Auckland Indoor or Winter Activities

Winter is that time of year when the summer activities and festivities become faded memories, the shops are in full swing with winter attire and it is getting cold, raining more and we all feel more miserable! Think there is nothing to do in the cold and miserable Auckland winter? With many indoor activities Auckland is the perfect place to be on a rainy day. Auckland doesn’t shut down in the winter, everyone just heads indoors. Why not try some of these warm and cosy indoor Auckland activities!

1. Auckland Art Gallery

Auckland Art Gallery is open 7 days a week 10am until 5pm (except Christmas Day) and is located right in the centre of town. As they describe it, it’s ‘New Zealand’s largest and most inspiring visual arts experience.’ It has international and New Zealand art and is a great way to spend a few hours indoors. It used to be free to enter but now international visitors will have to pay an entrance fee.

2. Snow Planet

Located only 25 minutes from Auckland’s CBD, Snow Planet is an indoor snow field open year round with perfect conditions every day! A number of chemical free snow machines keep the snow in mint condition while three lifts constantly run you to the top of the slope. There’s a small terrain park set up with a number of jumps and rails. There’s also a beginners area with private and group lessons available from professional staff. The on-site rental shop also rent out snowboards, skis, boots and jackets if you don’t have gear.

3. The Classic Comedy Club

The Classic Comedy Club , centrally located in the CBD, feature a range of local and international acts up to 6 nights a week. With a cabaret-style seating arrangement in the main venue room, for up to 140 people, and an upstairs studio capable of holding 40 people, the bar gives off a very up close and personal vibe. There is a small bar located towards the rear of the main venue room in case you get a little thirsty. Each night has something going on such as Big Wednesday (10 comedians for $15), and Raw Comedy Open Mic Nights. During the annual New Zealand International Comedy festival you’ll see some massive international acts here!

4. Freddys Ice House (Ice Bar)

Embrace the cold and visit an Ice bar! Tucked away in Princes Wharf on Auckland’s Quay St, Freddy’s Ice House may well be the unique night out you have been hunting for. You do have to pay for entry so it won’t be for everyone, but it will be a drinking experience like no other. Everything from the walls, the seats and the glasses are all made from stone cold ice, there are also some amazing hand crafted ice sculptures to admire. Drinks are limited, mainly just Vodka mixes but all the gear (jackets, gloves, ugg boots) is provided. With a constant temperature of negative 5 degrees Celsius, you can be sure your drink won’t get warm.

5. Kelly Tarlton’s SEALIFE Aquarium

One of the best indoor activities Auckland has to offer, in my opinion, is the excellent Kelly Tarlton’s. Open since 1985, Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium offers you a deep insight into the wildlife and sea life of the Pacific and Southern Oceans. It is home to New Zealand’s only sub-antartic penguins and a replica Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Antarctic hut, complete with authentic memorabilia. You can walk through the shark tunnel, chill out in Turtle Bay, visit seahorse kingdom and check out all the fish and other sea life. Kelly Tarlton’s also has some diving and adventure options including Shark Cage Diving and a chance for you to meet the penguins!

Kelly Tarltons Indoor Activities auckland

6. Extreme Indoor Karts

Located in East Tamaki, just a 10 minute drive from Auckland CBD, is a karting experience like no other! Inside you’ll find a go karting track on two levels and with a steep downhill. No more driving round in circles! They have BBQ facilities onsite if you want to spend a bit more time there (and discuss the race after it all ends) or order in some Hell Pizza. You can also bring your own food if you like. There are various ways you can enjoy the track from a 10 minute experience to group experiences called things like the Indy120 or the Le Man Enduro. Prices vary depending on what kind of race you decide to do. Extreme Karts is open for most of the day into the evening 7 days a week.

7. Rock Climbing

Auckland has a number of indoor rock climbing centres that are open year round and offer a variety of climbs for those of varying skill levels. Extreme Edge Rock climbing (located at Panmure and Glen Eden) and The Birkenhead Indoor Climbing Wall have some of the better facilities available in the country. Entry is also very generously priced, you won’t pay over $20 for casual entry, although equipment may cost you extra. It’s not only an extremely fun activity but it’s a healthy dose of fitness as well.

8. Sky City

Skycity Casino Auckland is a magnificent two level gaming venue open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Casino has the world’s most popular casino games at over 100 different tables as well as 1600 poker machines. There’s also fantastic live entertainment and great food and bar offerings.

If the weather’s really awful you might not fancy jumping off the Sky Tower, however you could still get up to the top and have a meal with a view in the restaurant, or visit the viewing area. The lift to the top is an adrenaline rush in itself!

Located in 8 different places around Auckland, Skycity Cinemas offer all your normal cinema experiences as well as an IMAX, IMAX 3D, Digital 3D and Gold Class seating. Gold Class includes your own reclining Lazy Boy and a waiter. (I highly recommend Gold Class if you’re watching a long film, it’s comfy and the food is really good!). They also have a large indoor gaming level for all those gamers out there. Top Tip – check out the cinemas on a Tuesday for cheaper tickets!

9. Cat Cafe

If you’re a cat lover then why not spend an hour sipping coffee whilst playing with some cats. They have 13 resident cats who are “hard to adopt”. Don’t worry they’re only hard to adopt because of their age or special needs, they’re all very friendly. Perfect for you if you’re missing your moggies back at home! BaristaCats is located on Queen Street.

MOTAT is the Museum Of Transport And Technology. It’s located a little out of town near Auckland Zoo. This is such a great museum and has a large indoor area to keep you nice and dry. Feel free to interact with the exhibitions!

11. Spookers Haunted House

Looking to scare yourself into next week without spending a fortune or risking your life doing so? Spookers Haunted House takes you on a wild trip through the scariest and most stomach churning attractions outside of America. The main attraction, the Haunted House, is set in an actual abandoned mental institute, Kingseat Hospital. It’s filled with crazy actors that never drop their character (you will scream!) Other haunted attractions are the Corn Evil Corn Maze, Freaky Forest (closed over Winter) and the 3D Vortex Maze. The 3D Vortex Maze is an unusual trip through an endless maze of colours, swirls, frightening creatures, turning floors and frights that come out of nowhere.

12. Auckland War Memorial Museum

One of the best museums you’ll visit. It’s probably better to visit on a sunny day so that you can also explore the Auckland Domain and gardens where the museum is located. However this museum is easy to get lost in for several hours with many fascinating permanent and temporary exhibitions. It’s $25 entry (unless you can prove you’re an Auckland or New Zealand resident) but well worth it.

Outdoor Activities but still great on a rainy day…

My Guide Auckland

Auckland Wintergarden

In Auckland's oldest park, the Auckland Domain, is the charming Winter Garden, where visitors can admire colourful flowers all year long.

Designed in the 1920s, the Winter Garden exists in two vaulted-ceiling glass houses at the Auckland Domain , a park built in the crater of the Pukekawa Volcano. One building, housing an array of colourful, tropical plants, is kept warm all year long, while the other displays temperate plants that change with the seasons.

Between the glass houses is a large courtyard centred by a picturesque sunken pool, providing a perfect for picnic lunches (it's also a popular photo spot, so remember to bring your camera!). Near the back of the complex lies a fern garden, where the iconic plants can be examined up close.

The adjacent Wintergarden Pavilion Cafe overlooks the gardens and is a great place for a relaxed spot of breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea.

The Winter Garden is free of charge for visitors.

Opening Hours: 1 April to 31 October: Monday to Sunday 9.00am to 4.30pm / 1 November to 31 March: Monday to Saturday 9.00am to 5.30pm /  Sunday 9.00am to 7.30pm.

10 Things to Do in Auckland in Winter

Winter is the perfect time to take advantage of Auckland's hot springs, celebrate the Maori New Year, visit the butterfly greenhouse or try a cup of chocolate.

10 Things to Do in Auckland in Winter

Sunset in West Auckland |©Gregory Furtado

From June through August temperatures drop to welcome winter, so it's the perfect time to go in search of warm beverages or make plans to escape the rainy days. You can ice skate , attend festivals, sample mulled wine or make plans indoors to protect yourself from the rain.

And, don't worry! Auckland is a privileged city because, compared to other areas of New Zealand, the cold is bearable and you can make outdoor plans. Temperatures stay between 13° and 15° C, but there can be freezing winds.

1. Stroll the streets drinking mulled wine

One of the best things about winter is tasting mulled wine , and for that, I recommend you book the Kumeu wine tour . New Zealand's wine quality is popularly known and you can't miss to join this plan.

If you have not tried it, this is the perfect time to relax and warm up with this delicious drink. In addition, you can go to the street markets, or to Coco's Cantina located on Karangahape Street.

Mulled wine has many benefits and will keep you healthy during the winter, preventing flu and poor circulation.

Book the Kumeu wine tour

2. Take a mountain bike ride

On clear days, you can book a bike tour of Auckland or even ride up the trails and take a ride to the top. Discover the best cycling routes , so you can set the stops to suit you and enjoy the experience to the fullest. In the surroundings there are places to eat, but as a precaution take a mini first aid kit, some food and water.

In this season the mountain offers cloudy landscapes that have a natural charm. It is a recommended experience as you will be able to take advantage of the cool weather and the special activities that take place at the top.

Book a bike tour in Auckland

3. Enjoy an excursion to Middle-earth

And what better time than at the gates of winter to book a trip to Hobbiton and experience a movie adventure into the magical world of The Ring of the Rings and the Hobbit .

A day tour to the popularly known as J.R.R. Tolkien's Shire where you will be accompanied by a local guide who will immerse you in Middle Earth as you discover the amazing Waitomo Caves and stroll through the North Island landscapes.

You will also enjoy a drink at the popular Green Dragon Inn and sample delicious local food.

Book a tour to Hobbiton

4. Sign up for rainy day-proof plans

While temperatures in Auckland are pleasant, there can be rainy days that ruin your outdoor plans. So if you want to have a pleasant winter, you should have an option B so that your itinerary is never boring. The best plan is to take a tour of art galleries or see a theater show:

  • Toi O Tamaki Gallery : if you want to go to a modern place where you can enjoy unrepeatable works and variety of stories. They constantly renew the works on display and in winter there are special events .
  • Gow Langsford , on Wellesley Street, presents temporary exhibitions during the winter.
  • Artpace Aotearoa , which houses contemporary New Zealand artists as well as foreign artists.
  • Gus Fisher , which has free admission and is located on Shortland Street on the fourth floor of the Kenneth Myers Centre.
  • Civic Theatre , where you can enjoy a play, live music, comedy and opera.
  • Basement , which is less expensive and runs until 10:30pm.

And if you like challenges, I suggest you take an ice bath , an adventure only for the bravest . This practice has become popular, due to its health benefits. It may seem crazy to dive under the ice during the winter, but you can accompany the experience with a hot drink or a craft beer. One of the most popular places is HANA , a venue that features ice baths and saunas. There are special events during the winter, such as underwater yoga.

Another option is to book your ticket for the Kelly Tarlton Sea Life Aquarium in Auckland , which has no less than 13 themed zones, more than 30 exhibits and 80 different species; or visit Game Over Auckland and play Go Karting , the Mario Kart-style car racing is an indoor option you can't miss. There are outdoor tracks for the more adventurous and the venue is open all day.

Reserve your ticket for the Kelly Tarlton Sea Life Aquarium

5. Hop on the tour bus and get your hot chocolate

Winter isn't complete without a cup of hot chocolate, take a bus tour of Auckland in search of your favorite spot. In Auckland you can find a variety of options, from mild infusions to thicker ones made with local milk .

  • The first stop is Bohemien Fresh Chocolates which offers a variety of flavors, from classic hot chocolate to fruity or spicy flavors.
  • Locals say that The Volcano Hot Chocolate located in the Commercial Bay, offers the best hot chocolates in town. They prepare the chocolates themselves and from there turn them into hot drinks.
  • They also have the Chocolate Bar where they offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails where the brown ingredient is the protagonist.
  • On Kingsland Street you can stop at Elisabeth's Chef where you can order hot chocolate bitter, with milk, or add salted caramel, ginger, Aztec spices or fairy f loss, while accompanying it with one of their exquisite desserts.
  • If you are looking for a thick option, you should stop in Parnell at Chocolate Boutique's Denso , which offers the thickest hot chocolates in the city.

And if you're still not convinced, schedule a food tour of the city .

6. Don't miss the winter festivals

To keep active and warm, New Zealanders plan events, concerts and festivals. In the neighboring cities you can find options to enjoy, but you will need to make a quick trip by plane and book the transfer from the airport . Don't worry! If you don't want to leave the city, you can take the opportunity to book a tour of Auckland or visit the best winter festivals that I bring you below.

  • Celebrate the Maori New Year : During winter the Maori welcome the new year Matariki and you can enjoy activities under the stars in June in Auckland . Be sure to dress warmly to enjoy the special performances , kite flying, workshops and art exhibitions. To honor this day the community usually prepares its typical dances and Hakas competitions . In the city center there are also activities, the most emblematic buildings are decorated and illuminated , such as the Auckland Museum, one of the best museums in the city , where you can learn more about the history of the Maori.
  • Indulge your palate at the Auckland Food Festival : Among the things to do in July is the Food Festival , better known as The Food Show , held at the Auckland Showgrounds about ten minutes from downtown. During this month, winter reaches very low temperatures and a food tour is a great option as well as this event, where you can taste a variety of dishes and enjoy demonstrations by renowned chefs and culinary workshops.
  • Sweeten your winter at the Chocolate and Coffee Festival : Almost to say goodbye to winter and welcome spring, comes the Chocolate and Coffee Festival where you can discover a variety of brands and flavors, enjoy a hot drink and mix your coffee or chocolate with cheese , nuts and peanut butter.
  • Take advantage of the Boutique Wine Festival tasting : If you like to try new wines , this event is for you. You will taste more than 300 types of wines prepared with the best grapes from New Zealand and you will be able to schedule a tour of the production cellar . You will have two days to visit the stands and live a sensory experience analyzing aromas and flavors . To accompany the wine there are food stalls, the entrance fee ranges from approximately 40 to 80 €.

7. Enjoy a steam bath in Waiwera's sauna rooms

There's nothing better than soaking in warm waters to shake off the numbness from the cold. There are resorts that offer ideal spaces to relax during the winter, with indoor and outdoor hot pools , thermal spas , pampering spas, steam baths and sauna rooms .

You can also enjoy natural hot springs that form due to geothermal activity in the city. Forty minutes from the center is Parakai Springs where there are heated pools with water slides, spas, picnic areas and barbecues. Prices range from €2 for babies to €30 for adults, but you can save if you buy group packages.

8. Visit the butterfly greenhouse

An ideal winter plan is to visit the Tropical Butterfly House at Butterfly Creek , a greenhouse that houses more than 800 types of butterflies , as well as fish, birds and reptiles. It is open and located twenty-five minutes from downtown, very close to Auckland Airport, the best methods of transportation to get there are by car, train or bus.

The entrance fee for all attractions starts at 14 €, but there are also family passes. The facilities have a souvenir store that you can go through, as well as a cafeteria, farm and aquarium.

This space preserves the Giant Wētāpunga and the Brown Kiwi , endangered species. The site remains open even on rainy days, as they have covered areas and a train that can move you around the grounds . For more information visit their official website .

9. Take advantage of the cold weather and go snowboarding

You can't miss Snowplanet located half an hour from downtown on Small Street , where you can go snowboarding and snow tubing all day long. It doesn't usually snow in Auckland , but you can live the experience in a unique place that allows you to enjoy the winter to the fullest.

After playing you can stop by their restaurant overlooking the snow slope , you can even celebrate your birthday on the premises. You can also enter Winter Wonderland , a snowy paradise for which you should pack warm clothing suitable for exposure to about 5°, such as wristbands, helmets, gloves, thermal jackets and waterproof clothing.

The facilities also rent the necessary equipment and you can ride on a sled . The entrance fee for one hour ranges from 18 to 35 € . For more information go to their official website and learn about all the activities Snowplanet has to offer.

10. Sign up for the skating rink

Many people love to experience winter in all its facets, if you are one of them then you should head to an ice skating rink in Auckland. There are a variety of options and most provide lessons for beginners. Paradice Ice Skating has locations in Avondale and Bontany, where you can enjoy Blackout Fridays or CheapSkate Wednesdays , which offer sessions with music, special effects and group games.

You can also go see an ice sports game, such as field hockey, or appreciate a performance of figure skating , speed skating and curling. After being exposed to the cold, there's nothing better than a cup of hot chocolate at the facility.

If you want to be the queen or king of the ice, head to Aotea Square Ice Rink in the city center, a lighted ice rink where you can skate with friends all day long.

Reasons to travel to Auckland in winter

Unlike summer in Auckland , winter is not only fun and amazing, it also offers discounts on hotels, car rentals, flights and tourist attractions. The beaches are still working and although the water is cold, you can make a sandman or picnic on the seashore, as there is no snowfall and the water does not freeze.

5. Try Traditional Hāngī

Auckland Bucket List: Hāngī

New Zealand dishes up some amazing food, but none of them can compete with Hāngī. A typical Māori dish and tradition, Hāngī is a unique way of cooking food that gives it the most incredible earthy, smoky flavor.

This awesome tradition involves digging a deep hole, filling it with red-hot stones, and placing a layer of leaves on top. Meat, such as venison, lamb, pork, and chicken, is then placed on top of the leaves, along with a selection of vegetables. Another layer of leaves is placed on top of the food with a little water before the whole thing is covered with soil.

Fun Things to do in Auckland: Hāngī

After several hours, the meat has become so tender that you don’t need cutlery to eat it, and everything has developed a wonderfully deep and rich flavor you won’t get any other way. One of the must-do things in Auckland, enjoying Hāngī is something you’ll only get to do as part of a cultural Māori tour. It’s rare to find this method of cooking in restaurants.

Pavlova is most commonly served as a light and refreshing dessert after Christmas dinner. (As New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, people there celebrate Christmas in summer.) But the dish is so popular you’ll find it on pretty much every dessert menu throughout the year.

For incredible pavlova, visit Cibo . This amazing restaurant dishes up three types of the dessert. Choose between a classic lemon pavlova, one flavored with salted caramel and peanut brittle, and one based on a lamington (an Australian cake) and flavored with coconut and raspberry.

11. Go Skiing In The Middle Of Summer

Auckland Bucket List: Skiing In The Middle Of Summer

New Zealand is an amazing place for skiing during winter. But don’t be disheartened if you’re planning to visit in summer. One of the most fun things to do in Auckland, spending a day at Snowplanet allows you to go skiing no matter how hot and sunny it is outside!

This cool indoor place is a magical winter wonderland all year round. The temperature is a chilly 23°F (-5°C), which is the perfect temperature for keeping the artificial slopes covered in a thick layer of powdery snow.

Fun Things to do in Auckland: Skiing In The Middle Of Summer

Offering something for everyone, Snowplanet’s main slope is divided into multiple areas, making it suitable for expert skiers and snowboarders as well as newbies. If you’ve never zoomed down a snowy slope before, lessons are also available for total beginners.

Because of the low temperatures, it’s essential that you wear warm clothing. If you haven’t got the right gear you can purchase some extra layers from Snowplanet and rent waterproof jackets and pants.

12. Check Out The Best Views From Mount Eden

What to do in Auckland: Mount Eden

You’ll find some of the best things to see in Auckland from the top of Mt Eden. At 643 feet tall, Mt Eden is the highest point in the city, making it the best spot for panoramic views. While you can drive to the top of the volcano cone, we recommend you grab your sneakers and walk to the top from the center of the city instead!

On your trek, you’ll get to travel through Auckland’s suburbs and really get a feel for the city. The neighborhood around Mt Eden is teeming with cute restaurants and independent cafes, giving you plenty of places to stop off if you need a rest.

Unique Things to do in Auckland: Mount Eden

The complete hike from central Auckland is around three miles. If that’s a bit too much for you, it’s only 1.25 miles if you start from the bottom of the mountain. This shorter trek will take you around an hour, and you’ll still be rewarded with dramatic 360-degree views.

13. Relax At The Auckland Domain

Cool Things to do in Auckland: Auckland Domain

Spending some time at the Auckland Domain is something you’ve got to have on your Auckland bucket list. One of the largest parks in the city, this wide-open green space is packed full of attractions that could keep you busy for a whole week.

It was built in 1880 as a 200-acre public reserve and has since developed into one of the most fascinating and beautiful parts of the city.

Best Things to do in Auckland: Auckland Domain

Inside the Auckland Domain, you’ll find the Museum of New Zealand as well as the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Both of these cultural attractions are fantastic places to learn more about the youngest country on Earth and the people who live there.

The park’s Wintergardens is also definitely worth checking out. This area was opened in 1913 and is made of two huge greenhouses in which you’ll find charming courtyards, fishponds, marble statues, and bubbling fountains.

14. Have The Best Summer Ever At Splore

Fun Things to do in Auckland: Splore

One of the best things to do in Auckland in February is to check out the Splore festival. A three-day music and art extravaganza, this dynamic festival is what summer’s all about. Held in Tapapakanga Regional Park, the festival combines everything the great outdoors has to offer with amazing music concerts and stunning artwork.

Saturday night is always the highlight of the festival. This evening is all about colors, costumes, and carnival. If you can plan ahead, it’s worth buying some cool outfits and wearing them on Saturday so you can really feel like you’re a part of everything!

Auckland Bucket List: Splore

In addition to the music concerts, DJ sets, and pop-up art exhibits, there’s loads of other stuff going on at Splore, too. There are two free family camping areas and a fantastic range of food vendors.

For a unique spin, you’ll also find Wendy’s Wellness Zone dedicated to healthy minds and bodies, the Listening Lounge for thought-provoking readings, and every type of outdoor activity you can imagine.

15. Walk Across New Zealand In An Afternoon

What to do in Auckland: Walk Across New Zealand

If you’re in the mood for a day-long hike, one of the best things to do in Auckland is to hike from one end of New Zealand to the other. No, we don’t mean hiking from North Island to South Island! Instead, you can hike the width of Auckland between Waitemata Harbor and Manukau Harbor.

This route follows the Coast-to-Coast Walkway, a 10-mile route that is relatively easy to complete. As long as you’ve got a decent pair of walking shoes or sneakers and you can manage a 4-5 hour hike, it’s a wonderful way to spend a day.

Auckland Things to do: Walk Across New Zealand

The hike takes you through a number of stunning reserves and parks, including Western Springs and the Auckland Domain. It allows you to explore some of the most beautiful and peaceful parts of the city. Plus, you’ll get bragging rights to say you walked across New Zealand in a single afternoon!

There you have it! The 15 best things to do in Auckland. What’s your favorite thing to do in Auckland?

3.      Raglan – 2 hours 1 min

A post shared by Raglan NZ (@raglannz) on Jan 27, 2018 at 1:56pm PST

If surfing is your thing, there is only one destination for you if you are in Auckland – Raglan. The surfing capital of New Zealand, Raglan is a super-laid-back town with plenty going on besides the waves. A trip to the Bridal Veil Falls is a must and there is some good walking to be found at Karioi where you can climb to the summit of the volcano. Manu Bay is the main surfing beach and Ngarunui Beach is also a great place to sit back and chill out on the black volcanic sands.

4.      Mt Maunganui – 2 hours 44 mins

The Mount is a summer playground for Aucklanders and it’s easy to see why. It takes less than three hours to drive to ‘the Mount’ yet you will feel a million miles away from the city humdrum as you kick back and relax in this holiday paradise. Whether it’s catching a few waves, walking on the boulevard or grabbing some delicious food in one of the many bars and restaurants in town, Mt Maunganui is an awesome destination to explore. 5.      Hamilton – 1 hour 36 mins

A post shared by Hamilton Gardens (@hamiltongardens) on Dec 10, 2017 at 11:26am PST

Hamilton is a great place to head for a couple of days or even as a stopping off point on your way south to other destinations like Rotorua and Taupo. One of the highlights of a trip to Hamilton is a visit to the Hamilton Gardens. The Gardens include a number of elaborately themed gardens from around the world including Italian, Japanese as well as traditional Maori style gardens. The Waikato River runs right through the city making a great feature and there are some nice walkways and cycle paths to explore.

6.      Matamata – 1 hour 57 mins

Image of a hobbit hole from the Hobbiton set in Matamata - Lord of the Rings location

OK, so there is one very major reason you will want to pay a visit to Matamata – Hobbiton! That’s right folks, the Hobbiton movie set is found in Matamata where you can experience all the magic of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Trilogies. Have a pint down at the Green Dragon Inn, take a wander around one of the Hobbit holes on Bag End and immerse yourself in the full Hobbiton experience. Other than your access to the Hobbit Movie Set, Matamata is a pretty quiet spot but a nice place to grab a coffee and check out the Hobbit-themed i-Site. If you’re in Auckland, Google “tourist places near me”, and hopefully, Hobbiton will pop up on your radar.

7.      Whangarei – 2 hours 6 mins

Spectacular view of Whangarei Harbour in New Zealand.

Whangarei is the regional capital of the Northland region and a bit of a hidden gem. It is a place that is more often than not used as a stopping off point for people travelling north to the Bay of Islands, however, those who choose to stick around for a few days will find some little delights including the Whangarei Falls, Mount Parihaka and the beautiful town basin area with its restaurants, shops and galleries. You can spend a few hours here exploring and you will find that Paihia in the Bay of Islands is just over an hours’ drive away so you can get the best of both worlds.

8.      Mangawhai Heads – 1 hour 28 mins

A post shared by James Murray (@jamesmurray89) on Jan 14, 2018 at 12:37am PST

Another hidden gem, Mangawhai Heads is described as ‘a little out of the way, a lot out of the ordinary’ and it really is a magical place to explore. It’s a definite ‘off-the-beaten-track’ destination but one that offers up a lot of rewards for those who venture out this way. It’s only an hour and a half from downtown Auckland and you will soon be discovering exquisite art, artisan produce, great restaurant, local markets and some of the best coastal and bush walks in Northland. There’s plenty of great waves for the surfers and the beaches are stunning. Sold yet? Give it a go.

9.      Matapouri – 2 hours 45 mins

A post shared by The Urban List Auckland (@urbanlistakl) on Feb 12, 2018 at 12:32am PST

Heading further north up the coast from Mangawhai you will discover the stunningly beautiful Tutukaka Coast and Matapouri Bay. This spectacular white sand beach is one of the most Instagrammed locations in New Zealand and it’s easy to see why. At low tide, discover the amazing Mermaid Pools with their clear waters, perfect for swimming and exploring. With few people, you will feel like this little piece of paradise belongs to you.

10. Kai Iwi Lakes – 2 hours 47 mins

A post shared by Matt (@highsocietyaerial) on May 1, 2017 at 8:20pm PDT

Head out towards Dargaville north of Auckland and you will come across the stunning Kai Iwi lakes. These freshwater lakes are the perfect playground in the summer months for swimming, water skiing, kayaking and fishing. With great campgrounds right on the lake, this is a great place for a weekend getaway. Our favourite time to visit is in the winter on a crisp sunny day when there aren’t too many people around. If you’re brave enough, take a refreshing dip to blow off the cobwebs!

So there you go, some great inspiration to fill your local travel diaries with. A Winter Escape

Auckland, New Zealand: A Complete Guide

' src=

If you’re ready for breathtaking star gazing, countless beaches, nearly fifty volcanoes, incredible food, and rich culture then you’re ready for Auckland. This city deserves as much time as you can give it and will simply leave you wanting more! From lush forests and endless beaches to a lively foodie community and an active city life, Auckland has something for everyone.

That being said, there’s a lot to consider when planning your Auckland stay! Below are our tips to make your time in Auckland awesome.

Note: This post contains affiliate links. If you click through and make a booking, I earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Where to stay in Auckland

Auckland has plenty of accommodation options, from hotels to bed and breakfast options. However, not all areas are equal when it comes to finding places to stay.

We stayed at the Grand Millennium Auckland, which I don’t actually recommend (full post on this coming soon). In fact, I don’t really recommend this part of the CBD at all if you’re travelling with a family (though this may differ for business travel). The reason for this is that, despite being in the CBD, there’s not actually a lot around that you’ll want to see and do (or eat). Instead, I recommend staying in the Viaduct/Wynyard Quarter, where there’s more happening (restaurants, proximity to groovy Ponsonby), the view is nicer, and it’s cleaner.

In the Viaduct, the Sofitel is gorgeous – luxurious and with a beautiful view. For something fun, the QT Auckland and Ohtel Auckland are both awesome. And finally, for a more budget-conscious (but still lovely) option, the Travelodge or Princes Wharf Boutique Apartments are great (this one has plenty of room for the family, too).

Best places to eat in Auckland

Auckland has a decent food scene, which we love. We obviously couldn’t try everything but here are some great options.

There are some great options in the Viaduct and Wynyard Quarter, including the Fish Markets (such as Lobster & Tap) – this is not your traditional fish market! We love Thai Street next door on Jellicoe Street for really good Thai food. In fact, we just love this strip in general, so if you’re heading out for a bite to eat and not sure what you feel like, head to Viaduct Harbour and you’ll find something great.

On the other side of the Viaduct is White and Wong’s, which is fantastic for modern Asian fusion. Just make sure you book, as it’s quite popular.

For something you can really get your teeth into, we loved Brothers Brewery in Mount Eden. We ate some amazing ribs and wings while drinking their delicious beers. For more local beers, we also recommend Urbanaut Brewery and Garage Project.

Food mecca is down Ponsonby Road in Ponsonby – again, there are so many restaurants along here it’s hard to pick. But this is another great option to have a stroll to see what you feel like.

On the corner of Wellesley Street and Nelson Street is a group of eateries that are really cool. Odette’s does a beautiful mediterranean brunch and Best Ugly Bagels do great… bagels. Food Truck Garage in this complex is cool too.

Over on the other side of the city is Mission Bay – we stopped for lunch here after visiting the aquarium. There are some cool little cafes here along Tamaki Drive such as Dos Amigos (great tacos!), Bodrum cafe (Turkish food), and Sal’s NY-style pizza.

Last but definitely not least, we loved having brunch up on the North Shore. We stopped in at Franc’s for an incredible breakfast and a cheeky Bloody Mary. The kids has a play on the awesome playground on the foreshore overlooking Rangitoto Island.

Things to do in Auckland

It can absolutely be overwhelming to decide what to do during your visit to Auckland, especially if this is your first time in New Zealand’s largest city. To help you plan your upcoming trip, we’ve put together some of the best things to do in Auckland. Whether you are looking to eat your way through the city, go on as many day trips as possible, or get out into nature during your trip, we have you covered.

Visit Maungawhau (Mount Eden)

One of forty-eight volcanoes in the city of Auckland, Maungawhau is absolutely worth a visit. If you want the full experience, book a guided tour and learn about the Mᾱori village that used to sit on top of the volcano itself in addition to the rest of the volcano’s history. Mount Eden is the highest natural point in all of Auckland and provides one of the best views over the city and the Waitematᾱ Harbour so be sure to bring your camera!

It is a fairly easy walk to the top of the volcano and is actually located in the center of the city, making a visit to Maungawhau a perfect afternoon excursion. You will be able to take your time walking up Mount Eden, as the winding trail is lined with award-winning gardens that take up the entire side of the mountain and are filled with waterfalls and beautiful plant collections.

Have dinner at a Night Market

One of the best ways to experience Auckland, especially if you want to try as much of the local cuisine as possible, is to make your way through one of the Night Markets that take place throughout the city.

While a Night Market may be fairly simple and self-explanatory, as it is the same as a local market and just takes place at night, it is a far cry from local markets you may be used to. Filled with food trucks, local artists, live music as well as drink stands, you will find no shortage of entertainment here. Make sure you check out the listing and schedule of all the Night Markets , as the location and stands change depending on the day of the week. You will be able to find a wide variety of local foods, as well as familiar western and international cuisines.

Pro Tip for all meat eaters: If you have the chance while visiting a Night Market make sure you try Hᾱngῑ. This local method of cooking creates some of the most flavorful and tender protein in New Zealand and is not commonly served in restaurants or found outside of New Zealand. Be sure to give it a try if you come across it while exploring one of the many Night Markets in Auckland!

Visit one of the many incredible beaches in Auckland

There are countless beaches in Auckland, making this city even more unique and exciting. While it may not be the best beaches for a casual swim, depending on the season of course, Auckland’s sandy shores are perfect for surfing, beach walks and incredible sunset views year-round.

As there are countless beaches to choose from, it can be hard to decide which is best for your trip. If you’re looking for the best beach within the city then check out Mission Bay and make sure to try the local fish and chips. If you’re looking for the best waves for surfing, then make your way to Piha Beach or Muriwai Beach, both on the western coast. Some of the best sunset views can be found at Onetangi, the longest beach on the island which is also one of Auckland’s beaches that is known for bodyboarding. These are just a few of the many incredible beaches throughout Auckland, but hopefully will help you get started on your New Zealand beach vacation.

Visit (or jump off!) the Sky Tower

One of the most recognizable pieces of architecture along the Auckland skyline is Sky Tower. This beautiful skyscraper is worth a visit and can be experienced in various ways.

Not only does Sky Tower have incredible panoramic views, it also has a revolving restaurant at its very top, a perfect spot for dinner at sunset. If you’re interested in an even more unique experience, sign up for sunrise yoga at the top of Sky Tower. You will be able to see the sunrise with the best view of Auckland all while getting your morning workout in. Ready for something even more memorable? You can bungee jump off Sky Tower. Take a look at all services available at Sky Tower so you can reserve your table, class or dive spot ahead of your trip!

places to visit near auckland in winter

Go Whale Watching in Hauraki Gulf

An incredible way to see Auckland is to go on a boat tour where you will also be able to experience whale watching in New Zealand. Your guide will take you through Hauraki Gulf in your search for whales, bottlenose dolphins and orcas on this half day tour. Whale watching tours such as these are sustainable services that support the protection of the wildlife you will be able to see during your tour and is also a great way to see the city, beaches and vineyards of Auckland!

While there are several companies that offer these services, I recommend using Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari . This local community has labeled their tours as “eco safaris,” putting the safety and sustainability of the marine wildlife first. They also claim to provide New Zealand’s most interactive whale and dolphin watching experience. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Visit Sea Life Kelly Tarlton’s aquarium

Auckland boasts New Zealand’s best aquarium, and it’s a great day out for kids (especially when the weather turns horrible, as it did for us!).

Kelly Tarlton’s is just out of the CBD to the East, towards Mission Bay. There are some exhibits that actually use sea water straight out of the gulf, which was really cool to see. We loved the way the aquarium was integrated into the harbour itself.

The kids absolutely fell in love with the sea turtles, penguins, and giant rays in particular.

SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s is open from 9.30am to 5pm daily. Tickets start from $45NZD per adult and $32NZD per child. Make sure you check out the SEA LIFE website for current feeding and talk times.

Hike to a waterfall in Hunua Ranges

If you’re looking to experience all the nature Auckland has to offer, then you should set aside a day to hike through the Hunua Range. Located on the south eastern side of the Auckland region and covering over 400 square kilometers, the Hunua Range is home to ore than 450 species of native plants, is lined with swimming holes and has one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the area.

There are two loops that will take you to a waterfall in the area: a twenty-minute loop for those of you who can only dedicate an afternoon, and a three-hour loop that will take you through the lush forest. Looking for more adventure? You can go mountain biking, fishing, and camping in the area as well. Just make sure you look at all requirements and guidelines before you do.

Wander through the Auckland Art Gallery

New Zealand’s largest art gallery is located in the center of Auckland and holds over seven centuries of art. Established back in 1888, the Auckland Art Gallery has the most expansive collection of national and international art in all of New Zealand, housing over 15,000 pieces of art. Here you will be able to explore the four floors of exhibitions while also experiencing one of Auckland’s prized pieces of architecture.

The Auckland Art Gallery constantly has visiting exhibitions, guest speakers, as well as additional events so make sure you look at the schedule so you can time your visit accordingly!

Take a ferry to Devonport

One of the best day trips from Auckland is the short ferry ride to Devonport. Though it is just ten minutes from Auckland, Devonport is worth a day of your trip as it has rich history, nature and food to experience. Known as “Auckland’s best seaside escape,” Devonport is one of those beautiful villages that you will never want to leave.

Devonport is nicknamed the “city of sails” and is home to the impressive Navy museum which showcases Devonport’s Mᾱori and maritime history. You can also walk through the gun emplacements and military tunnels which remain open to the public. Once you’ve had your fill on the history of New Zealand’s Navy, make your way to one of the local boutiques for some shopping, the chocolate factory for a sample of the local sweets, or some fine dining by the sea. Your options truly are endless so be sure to arrive to Devonport early in the day in order to get the full experience!

Experience Ponsonby Road

Whether you’re looking to shop, dine or experience Auckland’s nightlife, make sure you visit Ponsonby Road located in the western suburb of the city. This promenade is definitely the heart of Auckland’s shopping district, but also comes alive at night with some of the best restaurants, bars and clubs in the city.

While everything in Ponsonby revolves around eating, drinking and shopping, it is also home to one of the most beautiful parks in Auckland. Make sure you take a break from your shopping to wander through Western Park on the southern end of Ponsonby Road.

Go stargazing on Great Barrier Island

And finally, my all-time favorite thing to do in Auckland is to take a short ferry ride to Great Barrier Island, camp out on the beach, or book a room at one of the cozy stays on the island, and stargaze all night.

Auckland is arguably one of the best places in the world for stargazing, and though the nearby city does have some light pollution, the short ride to Great Barrier Island will make you feel like all the lights in the world have turned off. It is important to be aware that the entire island is off-grid and has a small and thriving self-sufficient community so you can be respectful and aware during your visit. You can either relax on the beach in the warmer months while watching for shooting stars, or make your way further inland and book a stay with one of the stargazing experiences on the island!

I hope this has been helpful as you plan your upcoming trip to Auckland! Make sure to check out my recommendations on where to stay while visiting New Zealand as well as my Ultimate Guide to New Zealand’s North Island.

Thank you for this great guide to Auckland. We booked our stay at the Sofitel (as recommended) and loved it. So happy we did.

I’m so glad to hear this Jenn!!! I think Auckland has a real special vibe, but yes it’s different to what people are expecting of NZ when they’re really thinking of the South Island. So glad to see you picked the Sofitel!
