Jatayu Earth Center: A Visitors Guide

Sharing is caring!

The Jatayu Earth Center is the world’s largest bird sculpture, crafted on a huge rock called Jatayapura. The rock got its name from the sculptor and movie director Rajiv Anchal. The significance of this sculpture is rooted in Hindu mythology and pays tribute to women’s safety and honor. The place resides in Chadayamangalam village in the Kollam district of Kerala, and numerous tourists come to witness the majestic Jatayu every year.

The sculpture exudes an ethereal vibe that visitors will feel long after leaving. In this blog, we’ll share a glimpse of the history behind the work of art, how you can visit the place, the ticket prices, and more. So, let’s get right to it.

Visitor’s Guide To Jatayu Earth Center

According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, the demon king Ravana abducted the Goddess Sita (wife of Lord Rama). As he hastened to Lanka (now Sri Lanka) on his Pushpaka Vimana (The Flower Chariot), Sita cried out to Rama and Lakshmana (Rama’s brother) for help.

On hearing this, Jatayu (An eagle-like divine bird) flew up and tried to stop Ravana by fighting him. However, Ravana was far stronger than Jatayu and easily overpowered the latter. With his sword, Ravana slashed one of Jatayu’s wings, due to which the bird fell onto a rock.

As Sita witnessed the entire encounter, she appreciated Jatayu’s efforts and granted him a boon. Jatayau was to be alive until he met Rama to narrate the incident. Eventually, when Rama and Lakshmana reached the place searching for Sita, they learned everything that occurred and acquired information about where they could go next. It is also said that Lord Rama appreciated Jatayu’s help by granting him salvation.

The rock Jatayu fell on is where the sculpture is crafted. Furthermore, since Jatayu sacrificed his life to protect Sita’s honor, the statue symbolizes women’s safety and honor . Besides this, another intriguing myth is that the little pond near the sculpture was Jatayu’s water source and has never dried up since his altercation with Ravana. Interestingly, you can also find Rama’s footprint on the temple premises.

Overall, this is the history behind the statue. Whether you believe in the epic or not, the events make up for a fascinating tale. In fact, if you dig deeper into the epic of Ramayana, you’ll find several such mini-stories that will make you ponder your philosophies, ideologies, and more.

Jatayu Earth Center – Who Is Jatayu? | The Legend of Jatayu| Jatayu Story

Jatayu Story

Jatayu Earth’s Center, Chadayamangalam , is a contemporary wonder of India . The Jatayu Nature Park is not only an adventure destination, it is also deeply connected with India’s great epic, the Ramayana . The massive sculpture of Jatayu brings alive the incident of the fight between the valiant Jatayu and the demon king Ravana.

The incident occurs in the Aranya Kand of the Ramayana. Ravana in the guise of a hermit fools Sita and kidnaps her in the absence of Ram and Lakshman. He carries the abducted Sita in his aerial vehicle known as Pushpaka Vimana. On the way to his kingdom of Lanka, Ravana encounters Jatayu who challenges him to a duel in mid-air. Jatayu is a brave but ageing king of the Vultures and a friend of Ram’s father Dasharatha. He recognizes Sita who is shouting for help while in the clutches of Ravana.

Jatayu, in spite of his waning strength and poor eyesight, stops Ravana and engages him in a fierce fight. But the combat is unequal from the beginning. Ravana cuts off the wings of the bird and mutilated him with his sword. Jatayu fell to the ground, his life ebbing away. He fell on a huge rock and lay gasping for breath, his vision dimming. But he held on to life with all the strength that he could muster.

He wanted to inform Shri Ram about Sita’s whereabouts before he breathed his last. At long last Ram and Lakshman, searching for Sita, came upon the prone and almost lifeless form of Jatayu. The brave bird whispered that Ravana had carried Sita southwards towards his kingdom of Lanka, and gave up his life. Shri Ram was heartbroken and performed the last rites of Jatayu as if he were his own father.

The place where Jatayu fell down is believed to be Jatayupara in Kollam, Kerala . The Sculpture of Jatayu stands today on the same rock that is believed to be Jatayu rock or Jatayu death place. Nearby can be seen a long cut in the rock which is believed to have been caused by the beak of Jatayu as he fell and slid down the rock. A small pond nearby in the rock which is said to be always filled with water is believed to have been the place from which Shri Ram took water and gave it to Jatayu as he took his last breath. A Rama temple and Rama’s footsteps can also be seen near the Jatayu statue location.

Experiencing The Jatayu Earth Centre | Jatayu Kerala

Jatayu Earth's Center

After experiencing the sights of Thiruvananthapuram including the gorgeous beaches of Kovalam, the legendary Padmanabha temple, and the magnificent Azhimala Shiva temple , it was time to head out towards more attractions that were part of our South Kerala itinerary. We were exploring South Kerala on the sidelines of the Kerala Travel Mart being held in Kochi .

It was an excited group that got out as the bus rolled into the Jatayu Earth Centre campus and came to a halt. Our expectations were high for this new, Kollam’s Tourist Attraction . We were welcomed at the Jatayu Earth Centre Reception. This is where the Jatayu Earth Centre Booking counters are located. One can buy entry tickets to the Jatayu Earth Centre here. Apart from this, there is a drinking water kiosk and restrooms available.

Cafe at Jatayu Earth's Center

Once past the reception, you enter a waiting lounge, where visitors wait their turn to get into the Swiss-Made cable cars that will take them to the top of Jatayu Earth Centre. A Cafe serving refreshments is also located within the lounge.

However, if you fancy a walk amidst the rocks and the forests, there is a walkway to the Jatayu Sculpture which consists of about 826 steps. It is about 1 kilometre and you can ascend the altitude of 1000 feet via the steps. There is a provision for drinking water along the way, however, restrooms are available only at the base and the top. This option was not available when we visited, and hence we settled for the cable car ride to the top.

Cable car at Jatayu Earth's Center Nature Park

We boarded the gaily the vibrantly coloured and well-maintained cars and were on our way to the top.

Cable Cars at Jatayu Earth Centre

The beautiful terrain that slowly passed below us had us captivated.

Jatayu Earth Centre

However. our gaze was soon transfixed on the giant sculpture that loomed in front of us as we approached the top. The first sight of the massive Jatayu sculpture took our breath away, and we stared at it in sheer wonderment.

Jatayu Statue

We were soon standing beneath the mammoth bird, infinitesimal against its gargantuan proportions. Standing in front of the huge Jatayu Sculpture and reflecting silently is definitely a prescription for inflated egos, as the bird instantly puts you in your place!

The sculpture is a monumental tribute to the valiant Jatayu. As circumambulated the sculpture, we could appreciate the minute details that the sculptor had incorporated into his creation. He had breathed life into concrete and moulded it into an almost living Jatayu, on the verge of death.

The desperate and yet defiant look in the eyes of the dying bird smote our hearts. The giant bird, the king of Vultures lay on its back, its injured talons raised, its beak open in agony, as it awaited Lord Rama. The poignant moments in which Jatayu clung on to life to provide vital information about Sita to Ram and Lakshman, have been frozen in stone for posterity.

The Jatayu sculpture is sure to bring the memories of listening to stories from the epic Ramayana , or reading them, flooding back to you. It is guaranteed to fill your being with emotions of love, concern, and pride, as you recall the death of Jatayu.

Reliving The Legend of Shri Ram Meeting Jatayu

Ram Temple at Jatayu Park, Kerala

After feasting our eyes on the incredible bird sculpture and the panoramic 360-degree views of the surrounding landscapes , it was time to travel back in time to the time of the Ramayana. There is a separate gate on the side of the Jatayu Hill which provides entry to the Ram temple , which is managed by a private trust, named, Chadayamangalam Jatayuppara Sree Kothanda Rama Kshetra Trust .

The Ram temple was built in the year 1973 and has a serene ambience. The cool winds blowing across the lush landscapes caress it lovingly as the strains of, “Shree Ram, Jay Ram, Jay Jay Ram,” fill the air.

Flag from Ayodhya

A triangular flag which has been brought from Ayodhya after due worship flutters in the breeze.

“There was an older temple here which no longer exists, and this temple was built in 1973 with the blessings of Swami Satyananda Saraswati,” says Shri Balu Nitin who is the priest at the Ram temple.

Holy footprint of Lord Ram

A little to the side of the Ram temple is located what is believed to be the left footprint of Lord Rama , who stood on one leg while granting Moksha or salvation to the brave Jatayu.

Jatayu Earth's Center

A small pond filled with water can be seen nearby, this is known as Kokkarani . Legend has it that when Jatayu fell writhing from the sky and gasping for breath, he was desperately in need of water. His beak scraped the rock in search of water, and Mother Earth herself created the small pond called Kokkarani to quench his thirst. The beak marks of Jatayu can be still seen embedded in the rock.

Shri Balu Nitin who presides in the Ram temple as a priest and is a volunteer of the Jatayuppara Sree Kothanda Rama Kshetra Trust, says that they are building a stairway from the bottom of the hill to the temple, with the help of donations from devotees.

They plan to build resting places and instal sculptures depicting incidents from the Ramayana, along the route from the foot of the hill to the top. Shri Balu Nitin hopes that the steps will be ready in about a year and that access to the temple would be free.

Jatayu is a story of self sacrifice. This episode of Ramayana always makes me sad. I kind of have mixed feelings about visiting Jatayu Earth Centre. You make it look so enticing. Hi to Sandy once more 😊

We all have heard the story of Jatayu in childhood and the bodily sacrifice he made to save Mata Sita, but had no inkling about this great place and spectacular monument. Thanks for sharing about it.

The pics look so fascinating, I am sure if I see them in reality I would be completely mesmerised. I know it is a sad part of Ramayana that we lost Jatayu but for us & future generations it’s a great way to remember his sacrifice, I hope to visit it someday. Also, I am glad to know that they took environmental friendly measures which many should follow I feel.

Jatayu: The Legendary Bird of Ramayana

Jatayu is a character from the ancient Indian epic Ramayana, which narrates the story of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana. Jatayu was a vulture-like bird who was the son of Aruna, the charioteer of the sun god Surya. Jatayu was a loyal friend and devotee of Lord Rama, and he played a crucial role in his life.

According to the Ramayana, when Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana were living in exile in the forest, the demon king Ravana kidnapped Sita and flew away in his flying chariot. Jatayu saw this and tried to stop Ravana by fighting him in the air. Jatayu fought valiantly but was severely wounded by Ravana’s sword. He fell to the ground and waited for Rama to come. When Rama arrived, Jatayu told him about Sita’s abduction and Ravana’s direction. Rama was touched by Jatayu’s sacrifice and performed his last rites with respect and gratitude.

Jatayu Earth’s Centre is built on the spot where Jatayu fell and died. It is a tribute to his courage, loyalty, and devotion. It also symbolizes the protection of women and nature, as Jatayu tried to save Sita and the forest from Ravana.

The Journey to Jatayu Earth’s Center

The development of Jatayu Earth’s Center is a testament to dedication and vision. It took years of hard work and collaboration to transform a barren piece of land into an ambitious eco-tourism project. Here’s a brief overview of the key milestones in the center’s journey:

1999 – The First Step

Securing clearance for an eco-tourism project of this scale was a challenge due to concerns about the surrounding ecosystem. In 1999, the clearance was granted when respected IAS officer Mr. Devendra Kumar released the rights and orders for the 65 acres of Government-owned land to build the first BOT Tourism project in Kerala.

2004 – Land Handed Over to the Department of Tourism

In 2004, the Kerala Government passed an order to transfer the 65 acres of land from the Revenue Department to the Tourism Department. The efforts of the then MLA for Chadayamangalam, Mr. Prayar Gopalakrishnan, played a significant role in advancing the project.

2005 – The Inauguration

An important milestone in the center’s history was reached when the then Kerala Minister for Tourism, Mr. K. C. Venugopal, officially inaugurated the project. Mr. Chengara Surendran MP and Mr. Prayar Gopalakrishnan MLA were present during the ceremony, marking the official commencement of this ambitious venture.

2006 – Finding the Sculptor

The process of selecting the sculptor for this grand project was a pivotal moment in the center’s journey. Mr. Rajiv Anchal, who had nurtured the idea of a Jatayu sculpture at Chadayamangalam for decades, was chosen by an expert committee after carefully evaluating proposals from various sculptors. This marked the beginning of the planning and creation of the remarkable sculpture that now stands as the center’s main attraction.

2009 – First Phase Work Inaugurated

The inauguration of the first phase of works, which included the sustainable and eco-friendly tourism land, was conducted by Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, the then Minister for Tourism in Kerala. This momentous occasion was graced by the presence of the then Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Mullakkara Ratnakaran, and Mr. Chengara Surendran MP, along with various dignitaries.

2010 – Investor Pitch

A project of the scale and scope of Jatayu Earth’s Center required significant capital to come to fruition. To attract the necessary investments, the Eco-Tourism Department submitted a proposal to the Government of Kerala to call for investors who could support the project financially. The proposal was accepted, and investments began pouring in from various quarters, providing the team with the much-needed support and confidence to proceed.

2011 – Proposal by Rajiv Anchal

Mr. Rajiv Anchal, the Chairman and Managing Director of Guruchandrika Builders and Property Private Limited, submitted a detailed proposal for the completion of the project. This comprehensive plan was accepted by the Government, setting the stage for further development.

2013 – Land Leased for 30 Years Under BOT Scheme

The Government of Kerala sealed the project’s fate by fixing a lease period of 30 years under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) scheme. The operations of the project were handed over to Guruchandrika Builders and Property Private Limited. The surrounding land and all the amenities were also transferred the same year, bringing the dream of Jatayu Earth’s Center one step closer to reality.

Jatayu Rock, Pond and Rama Temple

Jatāyu, according to the Rāmāyana, was a bird who was the son of Garuda (Vishnu’s mythical bird), and king of the vultures. He is also attributed to being the son of Aruna. He was an ally of Rāma and fought Rāvana furiously to prevent him from abducting Sītā, but was overpowered and left mortally wounded.

In the great epic Ramayana, Jatayu is characterized as a noble bird of divine origin. One day he happened to hear the plaintive cry of a lady. It was Sita crying for help while she was being abducted to Lanka by the demon king Ravana. Jatayu rushed to rescue her, stopped Ravana’s chariot named Pushpaka Vimana, and engaged in a battle with him. Eventually, Ravana cut off the Jatayu’s left wing with his powerful sword Chandrahasa, and went away with Sita. It is said that the injured Jatayu and his lost wing landed on top of a rock.

In time, the rock got the name Jatayupara. This is where the monumental statue of Jatayu is now built in Kollam, Kerala. The pond near the rock is said to have formed by the stroke of Jatayu’s beak. It has water throughout the year and never goes dry.

Legend also says that Lord Rama came to Jatayupara and gave moksha or deliverance to the wounded and dying Jatayu. Jatayu narrated the entire story to Rama, delivering him vital information about his wife Sita. Here, there is a mark of footprint said to be that of Lord Rama. A temple dedicated to Lord Rama sits in an adjacent compound.

The sculpture, adventure center, and the Siddha Healing Center sit over 65 acres of land and form the Jatayu Earth Centre.

The Jatayu Earth Center offers an assortment of rock-based adventure activities for thrill-seekers. Plan your trip to Kerala with us and enjoy your visit to Jatayu Park.

Your complete guide to Jatayu Earth’s Centre 2021: Everything you need to know

Jatayu earth centre or Jatayu Nature Park complete review

Indian folklore, dance, drama and other art forms are deeply influenced by mythological beliefs and they play an important part in creating India’s cultural imagination. The oral tradition of folklore being narrated and local drama troupes enacting stage plays have declined since the 1980s with the advent of television media. As a child of this generation, I religiously watched Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata on TV every weekend. The grandiose settings, flaming arrows and the mighty Hanuman enraptured me. My first glimpse of Jatayu Earth’s Centre evoked nostalgia and awe.

Where is the world’s largest bird sculpture?

The world’s biggest bird sculpture is now in Kerala i.e. God’s Own Country and is dedicated to Jatayu who laid down his life trying to save Sita. Here’s my complete guide to Jatayu Earth’s Centre, one of the premier tourist destinations in Kerala.

What is the story behind the Jatayu Earth’s Centre?

Ramayan is an Indian mythology which tells us the story of Ram and Sita, their journey through hardships and their ultimate victory over Ravan. In one part of the tale when Ram and Sita were in exile in a forest, Sita was kidnapped by Ravan. During this time, Jatayu, a vulture tried to rescue Sita from the clutches of Ravan. Despite fighting bravely he was unable to rescue her and was grievously injured during the clash. He fell on the foothills of what became known as Jatayupara. It is said in the Ramayan that Jatayu narrated the event to Ram before breathing his last. Upon seeing Jatayu nearing his end, Ram granted him moksha (emancipation) before resuming his search for Sita. The sculpture at Jatayu Earth’s centre made at Jatayupara hills has been inspired by the Jatayu in Ramayana

Jatayu Earth Centre facts

Jatayu Earth’s Center: The Experience

On showing your tickets, you will be given a wristband that gives you access to Jatayu Earth’s Centre. Now there are two ways to reach the Jatayu Rock:

The Jatayu Earth’s Centre walkway: If you are in the mood for some adventure, you can climb 826 steps and enjoy the natural surroundings to reach the sculpture. A word of caution that the area can get very hot in the summer months and it is advisable to carry plenty of water and snacks for this short climb.

The Cable Car: After a quick security check, you can move towards the cable cars that will take you to the sculpture. This is the option that I went for. Since I visited on a weekday, there were very few people around. On weekends, I am told, one has to wait in a queue. To prevent overcrowding, a limited number of people are allowed at a time. This is something that I appreciate as you get a good time to explore the place as well get Instagram worthy pictures!

Jatayu Earth Centre Entry wristband

The staff are very efficient and in a span of few short minutes, I was on my way in the cable car.

Jatayu Earth Centre Cable Car

You will catch the first glimpse of the magnificent Jatayu Bird statue as the cable car slowly climbs up. The view from the cable car is simply incredible. When you step off the cable car it will take you a while to take in the beauty of the place. Step inside and climb the stairs to reach the museum area and eventually you will be able to see a bird eye’s view (literally!) from the sculpture.

Jatayu Earth Centre views

During my visit, I was fortunate to meet Mr Rajiv Achal, the brainchild of this project for a short time. A joint venture by Kerala Tourism and Mr Rajiv Anchal, Jatayu Nature Park is the fruit of decade-long hard work.  “Jatayu may be the first mythical bird who laid down his life to save the honour of a woman.”, says Rajiv Anchal.

A beautiful poem on Jatayu’s bravery can be read right at the entrance. It is fascinating to listen to Mr Anchal describe his creative process, the challenges he faced in Jatayupara and some of the tough decisions he took during his journey.

I was particularly keen to know why concrete was used for construction. He replied that in the years to come concrete will give the sculpture a unique look. “Besides that, it was the only practical material for sculpture this big.”, he added with a smile.

India is a land of myths and legends. From birds to places to people – it is not surprising to see mythology, lore, and history blending perfectly with our modern everyday fast-paced life. The Jatayu Earth Centre, at Chadayamangalam near Kollam, Kerala, is an interesting example of how mythology still touches and inspires us. At the heart of this one of a kind, the rock-themed nature park is a statue of the giant bird mythical Jatayu from the ‘Ramayana’. A trip to this innovatively designed tourism spot will leave you in awe at the pure genius behind scaling up the legend of a mythical bird into one of the best examples of sustainable and responsible tourism in India. Here’s what you need to know before you go to Jatayu Earth Centre.

How the mythical bird spread its wings

More than a decade ago, Chadayamangalam was just one of those small towns that you passed by as you drove down the Main Central Road connecting Trivandrum to Kottayam and beyond. A quaint town with a link to the Ramayana. It was believed that Lord Rama and His brother Lakshmana chanced upon the giant bird Jatayu mortally wounded on the hillside during their trip to find Sita Devi. The bird who had valiantly fought to save Sita from the clutches of Ravana breathed his last on Lord Rama’s lap after passing on the information. There is a small temple dedicated to Lord Rama on the hillock and a footprint believed to have been His. However, the rocky hillock on which the temple stood was under threat of mining. A bunch of activists rallied against it. Their struggle was a huge success and it was decided that a sustainable, eco-friendly tourism project would be set up on this hillock. In the course of time, it was decided that this project spread across 65 acres would be the first Public-Private Partnership tourism initiative under the Build Operate Transfer (BOT) model in the state.

Renowned sculptor and filmmaker Rajiv Anchal who had always nursed the idea of creating a work which would stand the test of time stepped in. The project was planned meticulously and hours of hard toil was clocked before the giant bird statue and the Jatayu Earth Centre took shape.

The towering Jatayu Statue

jatayu nature park - places to visit in kollam

The main highlight of the Jatayu Earth Centre is the mighty statue of Jatayu – 200 feet long, 150 feet wide and 70 feet tall, making it the largest functional bird statue in the world. According to the creator Mr. Rajeev Anchal, Jatayu is an embodiment of valor and chivalry, a great symbol of a brave being laying down his own life to save a woman’s honor. He adds that each guest at the center should be inspired by the bird’s valor in this day and time when crimes against women are on the rise. And what makes this giant sculpture unique is the fact that it has utility spaces. The 15, 000 sq ft area inside the statue houses will house a 6D theatre with a Ramayana Theme and will be open only in the next phase.

The four hills

The Jatayu Earth Centre is built around the statue of the giant bird, and it encompasses four hills. It is on the Hill number one that you find this huge sculpture. There is a cable car to ride up this hill which also includes the Rama Temple.

Hill two is ideal for corporate team building programs including adventure activities and trekking. Hill 3 opens up avenues for zip lining and camps. Hill four offers a herbal garden, Ayurveda resort, and Siddha caves.

The crowd pullers

jatayu park

An ultra-modern cable car is a highlight. These cable cars are imported from Switzerland and can accommodate eight people at a time. The five-minute cable car ride will give you a breathtaking view as you glide over the greens to the top of the hill. The Centre also boasts of a heli-cab and you can book rides online.

Can I just walk in?

Since its inauguration, the Jatayu Earth Centre has seen a huge rush. So, it is ideal to search for tariff and book your tickets online in advance.

Why to visit Jatayu Earth's Centre

It redefines Kerala's haven as the first of its kind destination tourist programme! It was created in cooperation with the state government and was developed and designed by the Malay director Rajiv Anchal. The project is the first of its kind to use a BOT (Built-Operate-Transfer) model public-private partnership. The idea is to combine technology, history, epic, and the arts. It stands on the same hill where Jatayu, a demi-god, perished after being beaten by Ravana in a struggle to free Sita from his grasp. The park intends to offer the locals rainwater harvesting and sustainable energy sources in addition to serving as the main tourist attraction. In actuality, solar energy is also used to generate the project's necessary electricity.

Important facts to know about the Jatayu Park :

• After completion, the Jatayu Bird Sculpture, with its overall dimensions of 200 feet long, 150 feet wide, 70 feet high, and a coverage of 15000 square feet, is anticipated to be the largest stone sculpture in the world. In addition to being a huge sight, the Jatayu Sculpture is designed to evoke three strange feelings.

• Two floors of the museum housed inside the sculpture are devoted to depicting Treta Yuga, the time period during which Ramayan took place. Multidimensional digital photography and artwork from the same mythology will be displayed on the third floor.

• The theatre, which is housed inside the wings of the enormous bird sculpture, features an audio-visual presentation of the infamous battle between Ravana and Jatayu, the vulture who bears his name and perished while attempting to save Sita from Ravana.

• A staircase will lead to the top of the bird's-eye view, which will be situated in the Jatayu's eye. Visitors can enjoy the eye-pleasing panoramic view of Kerala's countryside and the Arabian Sea from this location.
