In addition to your itinerary, Wonderplan also shows essential information about the country you're visiting. These include the currency conversion rate, electricity plug type, languages spoken, weather, and popular conveyances.

3. PLAN by ixigo

PLAN by ixigo starts by asking you about your dream destination. Then, it provides an option to describe the type of experience you want to have. This is just like a ChatGPT prompt, so you can enter anything you wish.

For example, you can specify the duration of your stay, your interests, the kinds of activities you're looking for, whether you have a family with you, and so on.

But if you can't think of any prompts, PLAN by ixigo provides a few trip ideas, so you can always select those. PLAN by ixigo then shows a day-wise plan, showing what you can do in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

However, if the suggested itinerary doesn't sound appealing, you can again enter a prompt to edit it.

While iplan.ai doesn't mention which AI or machine-learning algorithm it uses, the results are fantastic enough to gloss over that. The app works beautifully on phones to give you a full itinerary for any one city at a time, depending on how many days you have there.

The app first asks you to name the destination city. As far as we checked, iplan.ai works best for popular tourist cities, not offbeat or obscure travel. Next, note how many days you will be there, and then choose your free time each day—a cool step to ensure a better itinerary if you already have some plans, but not a whole days worth.

Tell iplan.ai if you're traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or with friends, and then choose your interest among topics like history, art and culture, nature, entertainment, shopping, food, sports, relaxing, etc. Finally, choose between an economy, normal, or luxury budget.

After a few minutes, iplan.ai gives you a day-wise itinerary for your trip. It's plotted on a map so you can see all the locations, and each point of interest has a brief description along with estimated travel time.

The app has both free and paid plans. With a paid account, you can share the trip plan with your friends and access it offline. Another limitation of iplan.ai is that you can't get an itinerary for a multi-city trip. For now, you'll need to make a plan for each city you're visiting, one at a time.

The itinerary includes a map of your route and a day-wise breakdown of where you'll be going and what you'll be seeing. Each point of interest is clickable to find more information about it. We Let AI Plan Our Vacation And Here's How It Went

T he future is now — and AI is here to transform it. From helping you find information to making decisions, optimizing workflows, and even personalizing experiences, AI is reshaping pretty much every industry out there — from healthcare to marketing, software to retail, and education to travel. Because, whether you're directly involved in technology or not, efficiency (speed) and convenience (ease) have become more important than ever when it comes to helping us lead a more streamlined (impatient) lifestyle. And that's precisely where something like AI travel planners comes in.

Similar to what travel agents can do, AI travel planners create personalized travel itineraries and destination guides for you with just a few clicks. Simply choose your preferred platform — there are dozens — enter some key pieces of information like your destination, travel dates, and number of travelers, and let AI work its magic. And, while regular agencies might be lacking when it comes to immediate responses or certain customization capabilities, AI planners can put together a done-for-you plan in minutes — sometimes even less.

To see what all the buzz is about, we decided to put some of the most popular AI travel planning tools to the test to help us plan an upcoming nine-day trip to Madrid, Spain. Armed with a very vague sense of what we wanted to do while in the city, we hopped online, did a quick Google search, and chose four different (and free!) platforms: ChatGPT, Trip Planner AI, Roam Around, and iPlan.ai.

To kick things off, we headed over to good ol' ChatGPT . Although not technically an AI travel planner, ChatGPT uses previously learned information and advanced natural language processing (NLP) techniques that can generate travel itineraries. For our initial prompt, we provided the platform with very basic instructions — the number of people traveling, our destination, and our travel dates — and let it do the rest. Within a couple of seconds, ChatGPT-4 had written out a day-by-day itinerary that also included generic tips like "Take it easy and get acquainted with the neighborhood."

Since the initial response felt a little bland, we went ahead and provided the platform with additional details like the name of the neighborhood we're staying in, and asked it to be more specific about which attractions, restaurants, and shops to visit. With the updated prompt, ChatGPT provided a more detailed itinerary that included names but was still missing addresses and distances. This meant we had to, once again, prompt the platform in order to get what we were looking for. The constant back and forth with ChatGPT took less than 10 minutes until it created an itinerary we were relatively happy with.

Overall, ChatGPT worked great as a base from which we could build a more detailed and personalized itinerary for ourselves. However, since the platform is mostly text-based, it was difficult for us to get a sense of exactly where it was sending us, what it recommended, and how the trip might actually look.

Trip Planner AI

First on the list of dedicated AI travel planners was Trip Planner AI . Founded in 2023, the site lets you create itineraries, book tours, and purchase tickets — all from within the same interface. Once you've created an account, all you need to do is provide them with details on your destination, travel dates, number of people traveling, average budget, interests, and even how busy you want your schedule to be. Once the platform has compiled all of this information, it'll throw out an itinerary — complete with a color-coded map — in just seconds.

Along with the map, Trip Planner AI's itinerary also includes the attractions' distance from your accommodation — and from one another — as well as short descriptions of each place, average prices and entrance fees, and even potential time slots for your visit. It even throws out an estimate for how much you'll spend that day on food and other touristy things — which makes it a great tool if you have a strict budget!

In terms of details, Trip Planner AI had a lot more to offer than ChatGPT. However, we weren't too happy with some of the results that the platform kept giving us. Specifically, some of the restaurants and cafés in the itinerary seemed to have been picked solely based on proximity and not quality or reputation. Additionally, we also couldn't find a way to edit our itinerary, which meant we had to keep creating new ones if we wanted to see different options.

Roam Around

Next, we hit up Roam Around . After signing into the platform with your Google account, all you need to do is simply input your destination and travel dates, and the platform will quickly put together a multi-day itinerary for you. Broken up into morning, afternoon, evening, and bedtime, it covers everything from where to eat to what to see, where to shop, and where to go from some sundown drinks.

Additionally, the platform also collaborates with Viator and Get Your Guide — two of the most popular travel apps for finding experiences — so you can book admission tickets and tours directly from them. Other features include a handy "regenerate" button, which shuffles up your day or trip if you're not happy with what the platform churned out, an interactive map that pinpoints everything on your schedule, the option to add more days or check out other itineraries for nearby destinations, and a button that downloads your itinerary as a PDF.

One of the best things about Roam Around is that the destinations and attractions it picked felt a lot more curated and authentic than before. While the platform doesn't give you the opportunity to specify what you're into, it does a good job of providing a mix of cultural, outdoor, and leisure activities that most travelers will enjoy. Additionally, when it came to the recommended restaurants and bars, Roam Around's picks felt a little more thoughtful than Trip Planner AI's — sharing recommendations with higher reviews, better photos, and more detailed descriptions.

Lastly, we tried iPlan.ai . Unlike the others, the platform is solely available as a mobile app, which means you actually have to download it to your phone. And, even though we see the benefits of having your itinerary right in your pocket, it felt a little annoying that we needed to go through the hassle. Once you've downloaded the app, you can sign in with your Google account and start filling out your trip details.

Similarly to the sites before it, iPlan.ai will create a tailor-made itinerary for you based on your destination, travel dates, budget, and interests. Along with a list of attractions to see, the platform also includes estimated travel times between each spot, as well as detailed descriptions, operating hours, and reviews. Additionally, once you tap into each individual activity, the app is also designed to let you book tours and tickets by redirecting you to the Get Your Guide website.

In terms of convenience, iPlan.ai is a great tool to have during your trip. The interface connects to Google Maps, which means that you can easily access driving or walking directions to where you want to go. Ultimately, however, iPlan.ai didn't do much more than its web-friendly counterparts, and still had some debatable options when it came to dining.

Should You Be Using AI To Plan Your Trips?

Overall, AI travel planners do exactly what they're meant to do: create full travel itineraries  you can use. Whether or not this is enough to actually plan a trip is a different story. Why's that? Well, in terms of travel, some of the basic information provided by AI might be off because it just doesn't have access to real-time data. 

The same goes for things like tickets and reservations. So while AI might be quick to recommend a famous landmark for a specific date, it won't be as quick to tell you that tickets have been sold out weeks in advance. Whether it's due to outdated information or operational changes, it's important to take everything with a grain of salt — and, ideally, double or even triple-check the source yourself.

All in all, we felt like the AI travel planners we chose did a good job with their itinerary-making. Most of them even chose the same attractions — sometimes on the same days — which probably means they're drawing from similar datasets. However, there was a clear winner in terms of usability, user experience, and detail, and that was: drum roll, please... Roam Around! Simple to use and intuitive, the platform gave us exactly what we wanted without the need to fill out too much personal information or navigate through complex interfaces. Plus, the site's own chatbot, Layla, is also a great source of more specific-detail information when you need it.

Mindtrip , a Silicon Valley startup founded by e-commerce veterans, announced the launch of its AI-powered travel platform today, aiming to provide consumers with a more intuitive, personalized, and comprehensive trip planning experience.

The platform leverages large language models (LLMs), natural language processing (NLP), and a proprietary knowledge base to enable travelers to plan trips through an interactive chat window. Mindtrip can provide inspiration and recommendations, answer follow-up questions, and help users build detailed itineraries — all within a single application.

“Natural language just seems like a perfect way to bring it all together, because it’s very conversational,” Andy Moss, CEO and co-founder of Mindtrip, said in an interview. “If I’m talking about a trip to Sicily, I [would] want to detour and ask about the food, because I’m into restaurants and where to eat. Or I want to ask about where to go hiking, or the cultural history.”

Moss, a serial entrepreneur, co-founded Mindtrip with several longtime collaborators, including veterans of companies like Ariba and Roadster . The team saw an opportunity to apply LLMs to the complex and fragmented process of travel planning.

Personalized and fluid travel planning with conversational AI

While chatbots like ChatGPT can answer travel questions, Mindtrip aims to go further by combining the conversational elements with rich visuals, geospatial data, and booking capabilities. For any location or point of interest the AI mentions, users can see photos, maps, and detailed information without leaving the interface.

“If you just get a stream of words coming back from OpenAI, that’s actually quite complicated,” explained Moss. “We’ve done a lot of work to detect the named entities correctly and tie them into our knowledge base, so you can explore relevant content or book straight from the conversation.”

Another key differentiator is Mindtrip’s focus on personalization. Users can specify their travel preferences and constraints, which the AI then factors into its recommendations and itinerary building. They can further customize suggested itineraries through a combination of dialog and direct manipulation.

“People ask why we recommend certain things,” said Moss. “Well, we give you the ability to actually tell us about how you like to travel, so that when we do answer, we can put it in that context.”

Making travel recommendations actionable

Michelle Denogean, Mindtrip’s Chief Marketing Officer, emphasized the advantage of consolidating the many aspects of trip planning into a single, user-friendly application.

“There’s a ton of content out in the world on travel, and so many recommendations, but they’re not actionable and they’re not customizable,” she said. “What we ask at Mindtrip is, how do you make that actionable, customizable — and then be able to do it all in one place?”

In addition to its consumer-facing product, Mindtrip plans to provide its tools to travel industry partners, including tourism boards, travel agencies, airlines and hotel chains. Many in the industry see AI assistants as an important emerging distribution channel.

With $7 million in seed funding , the company faces competition from tech giants like Google and Microsoft, which are also integrating conversational AI into their travel products; however, Moss believes there is an important role for an AI-first, vertically-focused player.

“Much like there was vertical search, we see this playing out with vertical AI,” he said. “The personalization and specialized content that’s needed for travel can be done better by a focused player than a horizontal one.”

As AI begins to transform the way people discover and plan trips online, Mindtrip aims to set itself apart through its powerful natural language interface, rich knowledge base, and focus on actionability. But it remains to be seen whether it can become a leader in the rapidly evolving world of AI-powered travel tech.

Human-sounding AI can plan, help book your travel. But can you trust it?

It wasn’t so long ago that travelers planned trips without the internet.

“Back in the day, our parents used to go to these travel agents and really kind of express what they were looking for and what kind of vacation they wanted,” said Saad Saeed, co-founder and CEO of Layla, an AI travel planner whose website launched this year. “Slowly, we kind of acclimatized ourselves to start using these search boxes, clicks, these forms and filters.”

Artificial intelligence-driven tools like Layla can now turn back the clock on that experience, engaging with users almost like humans to customize travel plans with lightning speed plus all the resources of the web. But does AI actually make travel planning easier and can it compare to human expertise? 

Yes and no. Here’s why.

Can AI actually understand us?

It can try. 

“What are you personally looking for in this trip and what do you want out of it?” asked Saeed. “Do you want to reconnect with your partner, for example, or do you want to just feel some adventure and thrill?” 

A human travel agent may ask a series of questions to understand a client’s needs. So can generative AI , which picks up on keywords. Mindtrip, an AI planner launched publicly on May 1, has an actual travel quiz that asks users to rank priorities like “Is your ideal vacation day an exhilarating adventure or a relaxing break?” using sliding scales.

“What we get at the end of that quiz, using the AI, is a really customized description,” explained  Mindtrip Founder and CEO Andy Moss. That then informs what the AI suggests to the traveler. 

Informed suggestions can save users time in narrowing down destinations and experiences, as well as  introduce places users may never have discovered on their own.

Can AI fully replace humans?

No. Layla may sound human, using conversational phrases like “I've got three cozy nests that won't make your wallet cry.”

“She has a personality. We try to make her funny and so on, where it's really that friend that can get to know you and then recommend you the perfect stuff,” Saeed said.

But part of Layla’s expertise comes from the real-life experiences of some 1,600 travel content creators  the Berlin-based platform has partnered with. Their videos and insights can give users a richer picture of what to expect.

Mindtrip also leans on human expertise, having tapped a limited group of travel influencers for curated content with plans to eventually open it up so anyone can share their travel itineraries and experiences with the public.

Is AI a threat to privacy?

With all the rapid advancements in AI in just the past year, some users are wary of its safety .

“Data privacy is definitely one of our biggest concerns, and we ensure that none of the personal identifiable information ever reaches basically the model providers. That will all stay with us,” Layla’s Saeed said. “None of their personally identifiable data can ever be basically used to profile them or basically go into any of these systems, which are training these different models.”

Booz Allen Hamilton, the nation’s largest provider of AI to the federal government , focuses heavily on ethical and  secure AI, as well as adhering to the government’s policies on data collection. 

“We collect as little information as we can in order to provide a secure transaction,” said Booz Allen Hamilton Senior Vice President Will Healy, who heads up their recreation work, including Recreaton.gov , the government’s central travel planning site for public lands like national parks. “We don't save your searches. We don't save your credit card data. We're very careful about the data that we store.”

Yoon Kim, an assistant professor in MIT’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department and Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory , isn’t too worried about security in the initial brainstorming stages of travel planning with AI.

“I don't see, at this point, how AI-generated advice is spiritually different from travel guide articles that you might read on certain websites,” he said. “Travel planning is one really nice use case of these models, as narrow as it is, because it's a scenario in which you want to be given ideas but you don't actually need to commit to them.” 

What’s next for AI? 

Things could be different, though, if AI is used beyond trip planning. Deloitte sees AI being woven into all parts of travel.

“There is an opportunity for a real engine – I'm going to just use a generic term, engine – that allows you to search and pull it all together and to sort based off of your personal reasons for prioritization and then not stopping at ‘hey give me a list’ or ‘here's what to do,’ but ‘OK, now go create my itinerary, help me book it, track it all the way through that travel process,” said Matt Soderberg, principal, U.S. airlines leader for Deloitte. 

Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report, released in early April, identifies seven stages where AI can intersect with a trip, from personalized recommendations based on past travel, online purchases and tendencies to day-of issues to a post-travel pulse, where travelers may be asked about their experience and start thinking about future trips. 

“When you solve across all of those, that's going to be the Holy Grail,” Soderberg said. “The difficulty is that doesn't all sit in one place. And so how do you get the right information and the right data to bring all of that together for a single experience for the consumer? And who's going to own that?”

Layla and Mindtrip, among others, already offer booking through partners like Booking.com. “It's all about making things actionable,” Moss said.

But for now, if issues come up mid-trip, AI tools can’t fix them like humans can. Humans still have to get involved.

A retired Microsoft exec and his wife fell in love with RVing during the pandemic. Now he's using AI to help you plan your next road trip.

After spending 23 years as a CTO at Microsoft , Lengel retired in 2017, at which point he and his wife knew they wanted to travel the world. They visited places like Cambodia, Vietnam, and India, typically traveling by plane and staying in hotels — often Marriotts.

Then the pandemic hit.

Suddenly, they were stuck at home in South Carolina. That's when the couple realized, "We really haven't seen the good old US of A."

Up until that point, they'd never even been camping .

"We figured if ever there was a time to go RVing, to go camping, this would be it," Lengel told Business Insider.

So they rented an RV and set off for Nashville with a couple of good friends. "We just had a blast," Lengel said. "Hanging around the campsite and the campfire and eating and beverages, and just the camaraderie. We just fell in love with the lifestyle of camping in one week."

Within six months, they purchased an RV of their own and started taking it all over. But when the couple tried to plan a six-week, multi-stop road trip to the national parks of the Southwest, they realized it was actually pretty challenging and that the existing resources were not great.

"There has to be a better way," they thought.

A couple of years later, in May 2023, Lengel launched AdventureGenie — an AI-powered RV trip planner. Lengel, who serves as chairman and CEO, said that in less than a year, AdventureGenie has attracted more than 10,000 users, and not just RVers, but also people traveling in cars on all kinds of road trips.

AI can customize trip planning

AdventureGenie is one of many AI-powered trip-planning tools that have popped up over the past couple of years. It's been featured on lists of the best RV- and road-trip planning AI tools.

AdventureGenie is set up to help people plan their trips in three phases, which Lengel said was based on talking to thousands of people about how they plan their trips.

First, you can shape your trip. You can tell AdventureGenie things like where you want to start, where you want to end, how many miles you want to drive in a day, and any places you know you want to stop along the way. AdventureGenie will create a custom route based on your preferences and what the program knows about you, either from what you've told it or from past trips you've planned.

Second, you can select your campsites. AdventureGenie uses AI to compile information about campsites and make recommendations based on your preferences. In addition to generating an overall score on a campsite, AdventureGenie also generates a score that is unique to you, indicating how likely a specific campground is to meet your personal needs.

Third, is finding things to do. For instance, if it knows you like eating at local restaurants, hiking, and biking, as Lengel and his wife do, it can point out those attractions.

The biggest thing AI brings to AdventureGenie's trip planning is the customization, Lengel said. Instead of looking up a generic road trip planner that is the first hit served to everyone on Google, AdventureGenie can create itineraries that are unique to you.

"It feels as if you have a copilot or a travel planner sitting by your side and knows what you're looking for and customizes it for you," Lengel said.

He said that when RVers first use AdventureGenie the "jaw-dropping" moment for them is when it fills in the blanks on a trip with stops along the way.

In the past, if you wanted to road trip from South Carolina to Yellowstone, you'd have to look at a map and try to plot out stops based on how many miles a day you want to drive. But you'd also have to manually figure out whether those stops have campsites that suit your needs, or if they have any other attractions that make them worth passing through, or how far off the highway they are.

Lengel said new AdventureGenie users often say it saves them so much time planning their trip just by filling in their route.

"That's pretty darn rewarding for us," he said.

From Microsoft to tech startup

Lengel, who came out of retirement to launch AdventureGenie, said working on this startup has been a major change of pace from his days at Microsoft, which he also loved.

"We're a startup at our core, and it's a lot different than when I was working for an organization that had 150,000 employees and an incredible budget," he said. "We all wear lots of hats, which has been exciting, thrilling, and even challenging from time to time."

These days, he and his wife are on the road three out of four weeks a month, though now it's usually for work, visiting trade shows and meeting with RV user groups.

However, they do still make a point to do some fun things, too.

When Lengel spoke to BI, he was sitting in his RV in the Florida Keys, with a view of the ocean right out his window .
