History of P&O Cruises

The story of P&O Cruises began in 1837 when the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company was founded by Brodie McGhie Willcox and Arthur Anderson. Originally operating as a mail and passenger service, the company’s inaugural voyage took place in the same year, with a paddle steamer sailing from London to Spain and Portugal.

Fast forward to 1840, and the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company merged with the Oriental Steam Navigation Company to form the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O). This merger marked a significant turning point for the company, as it expanded its operations to include routes to India , Australia, and the Far East.

Over the years, P&O Cruises continued to grow and innovate, cementing its position as a leading force in the cruise industry. It introduced modern steamships with enhanced passenger amenities, such as private cabins, dining saloons, and first-class lounges, offering passengers a new level of comfort and luxury.

During World War II, many of P&O Cruises’ ships were requisitioned by the British government for military use. However, after the war, the company bounced back, modernizing its fleet and resuming its passenger services.

In the 1970s, P&O Cruises underwent a transformation, shifting its focus to leisure cruising. The iconic ship Canberra, dubbed the “White Funnel” due to its distinctive exterior, was introduced in 1961 and became the flagship of P&O Cruises. This marked the beginning of a new era for the company.

In the following decades, P&O Cruises expanded its fleet and introduced new ships, each more luxurious than the last. The company embraced innovation, incorporating state-of-the-art amenities and facilities to enhance the passenger experience. P&O Cruises became synonymous with leisure travel, providing unforgettable vacation experiences to people from all walks of life.

In recent years, P&O Cruises has continued to evolve and adapt to changing consumer preferences. The company has focused on sustainability and responsible tourism, implementing environmentally friendly practices to minimize its impact on the environment.

Today, P&O Cruises operates a fleet of modern and elegant ships, offering a wide range of itineraries to destinations around the world. With a commitment to delivering exceptional service, luxurious accommodations, and exciting onboard experiences, P&O Cruises remains a trusted and highly regarded name in the cruising industry.

As P&O Cruises looks to the future, it continues to innovate and push the boundaries of what a cruise vacation can offer. With a rich history spanning over 180 years, P&O Cruises has a legacy of excellence and a vision for creating unforgettable memories for every passenger who steps on board.

Paul Ludlow, President of P&O Cruises

Paul Ludlow is the President of P&O Cruises .

On a sunny Wednesday morning, we sat down to discuss Paul's journey from sales administrator to cruise line president and his plans for the 21st-century evolution of what is dubbed Britain's best-loved cruise line.

Growing up on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England, Paul got his first taste of travel working as a tour guide for an educational tours company, EF Travel. He showcased the island and taught English to visiting school children.

"In hindsight, I think I probably realize now that my first job as a tour guide meant I had a future in the travel industry – I started so young, showcasing the local area, and I absolutely loved it," Paul says, beaming.

From there, Paul's journey to becoming the president of P&O Cruises began.

"I don't think you ever set out thinking that that is your final destination," Paul chuckles.

After studying Business at Bournemouth University, Paul remained in the south of England, on the doorstep of P&O Cruises, one of the largest employers in the region at the time.

"I got my foot in the door at a low level in the business. My first role was sales administrator, over 23 years ago now!

I realized very quickly that the cruise industry is such an exciting place to be – back in the day, it was tiny compared to where it is today," says Paul.

Paul recounts the first time he set on a cruise ship: "I was overwhelmed by the scale, the choice, and the amenities available on the ships.

Looking back now, you could perhaps fit several of those ships into the size of the ships we have today at P&O Cruises," says Paul.

"It was a fast-growing industry and an exciting place to be, and I stuck with it," Paul adds.

Paul worked his way through P&O Cruises' parent group, Carnival Corporation, as the previous UK managing director of Princess Cruises before landing the top job of president of P&O Cruises.

"Every day is different – I have huge variety within my role.

Cruise ships are like floating cities with theatres, fine-dining restaurants, and even hospitals. Parts of our organization are dedicated to each of those areas—it's my role to be responsible for all of that!" says Paul.

"I'm very fortunate to travel on all of our ships to all four corners of the world, and I get enormous joy out of that.

We have over 15,000 people working for this business, and I really enjoy my interactions with each of them," Paul adds.

I wonder what the most significant challenges are in Paul's role?

"We're a very complex business. Often, you'll make a change in one area of the business, and it'll have a consequence in another part of the business.

So one of the challenges is understanding that interplay, making sure that you have all the stakeholders together, that everyone has a clear view of what 'good' looks like, and that we're all working for a common goal," says Paul.

"Over time, you realize that you can't be an expert in everything you're ultimately accountable for in a large and complex business like this.

You rely on subject matter experts, and you have to learn to trust that they will drive for the best result possible," says Paul.

"As you develop as a leader and move through the organization, you realize that the way you empower people and set them up for success will deliver the best results, " adds Paul.

With so many cruise lines floating around, I wonder what makes a cruise, a P&O cruise ?

"There's a DNA that runs through all of our holidays. P&O Cruises is an iconic brand with enormous trust amongst its guests, but what it's always been throughout its 200-year history reflects the best of Britain.

Britain never stands still—people's tastes, interests, and hobbies constantly move. We want to make sure that when people come onboard, they have immediate familiarity with what they have at home, but done even better at sea," says Paul.

"Holidays count now more than ever after the COVID pandemic, and with the economic backdrop standing as it is, cruisers are looking for value and a return on their investment," Paul adds.

P&O Cruises has heavily invested in its partnerships, from gourmet menus designed by British chef Marco Pierre White to entertainment dreamt up by Take That's Gary Barlow.

More recently, the cruise line partnered with Nicole Scherzinger, formerly of The Pussycat Dolls, to develop entertainment under the SkyDome onboard P&O Arvia.

"I think P&O Cruises has evolved enormously over the last ten years, and we'll continue to stay ahead of modern Britain into the future," says Paul.

After welcoming its two newest ships, P&O Iona and P&O Arvia , they plan to pause as they focus on passenger experience.

"We have a huge presence in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and the Norwegian Fjords, and we're increasingly working with those destinations to maximize guest experience ashore.

I want to be Britain's number one holiday choice—so I'm not just limiting this to the cruise sector," says Paul.

"In the UK cruise sector, P&O Cruises is already the market leader, but I really want us to have a challenger mentality so that we think bigger than just cruise," Paul adds.

I relay a question from Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises, for Paul – "What do you say no to?" I ask.

"I actually say no a lot! I strongly believe that you have to focus on your priorities. We're not short of good ideas in our organization, and there is lots of passion and enthusiasm amongst all our people—but we have to be selective in the things we can spend our time and money on.

Saying no enables you to continue focussing on your priorities and stay on the right track," says Paul.

I ask Paul whether he has a question he'd like to ask another cruise line president?

"What keeps you up at night? Is there anything that weighs heavy on your mind from week to week, from month to month?" Paul ponders.

The bonus is worth $250 in onboard credits, which could help offset expenses on an upcoming trip.

Alternative cards to consider

The Celebrity Cruises Visa Signature may be right for you if you enjoy cruise tourism and are loyal to the Celebrity and Royal Caribbean brands. That said, it’s not the best card for everyone. These alternative travel cards could work if it doesn’t sound like the right option for you.

United Gateway℠ Card

Why we like it : If you prefer traveling by air and are a loyal United customer, the United Gateway card is worth considering. This card features a welcome bonus: Earn 20,000 points after spending $1,000 in the first three months. This card’s reward structure is also fairly straightforward compared to some competitors. You’ll earn 5x miles on hotel and rental car purchases through Capital One Travel and 2x miles on everything else. You can redeem your rewards for trips through Capital One Travel, travel with over 15 partners, gift cards, merchandise, and more. The Capital One Venture Rewards card has a $95 annual fee.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

Why we like it : The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is very popular, and with good reason. Cardmembers can earn a 60,000-point welcome bonus after spending $4,000 in the first three months. Those 60,000 points are worth 25% more when redeemed for travel through Chase.

Besides a generous welcome offer, you’ll earn 5x points on travel purchases in the Chase portal (excluding hotel purchases that qualify for this card’s annual $50 hotel credit); 3x points on restaurant, online grocery store, and select streaming service purchases; 2x on general travel purchases; and 1x on everything else. Israel's military says it has prepared plans to respond to a possible Iranian attack.

The country is ready for a "wide variety of scenarios" that include both defensive and offensive actions, said army spokesperson Daniel Hagari.

The military has completed a situation assessment with the head of US Central Command, General Erik Kurilla, he added.

"Our defences are ready and know how to deal with every threat separately," said Mr Hagari.

"Next to defence, we are prepared to attack. We are ready to attack with a range of capabilities and we know how to act and protect the people of Israel."

His comments come as Israel braces for a possible Iranian attack, which Joe Biden warned could come "sooner rather than later".

Iran has threatened to retaliate after blaming Israel for an airstrike that killed two Iranian generals in the Syrian capital of Damascus last week.

Iran has a number of proxy groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen that are all capable of striking Israel.

Israeli leaders have threatened to strike Iran directly if it attacks.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the Israel-Hamas war and wider tensions in the Middle East.

Last night, a US defence official told Sky News it was "moving additional assets" to the region as the threat of an Iranian attack on Israel continues to grow.

The White House has warned the threat of a strike was "real" and "viable", and some analysts have suggested it could happen this weekend.

Iran has vowed to launch a retaliatory attack after a deadly airstrike on its embassy in Syria last week, which has been widely blamed on Israel.

We'll be bringing you all the latest updates throughout the day but, before we do, here's a recap of the key events from the last 24 hours:

  • Multiple countries including Poland, France and Russia changed their travel advice, urging citizens to avoid visiting Israel;
  • Joe Biden reiterated US support for Israel, saying his administration is "devoted" to its defence;
  • Israeli officials met a US CENTCOM commander to discuss the military's readiness for "defensive and offensive operations";
  • The Israeli military said the first humanitarian aid trucks entered through a newly opened northern crossing point;
  • Iran said it will not attack Israel hastily and it will avoid a major escalation.

That's all for our coverage for now.

Well be back tomorrow morning with more updates on the Israel-Hamas war and wider tensions in the Middle East.

Tensions in the Middle East are continuing to increase this evening, as the US moves assets in the region to better protect its forces and bolster regional deterrence.

It comes amid the threat of an Iranian attack on Israel in retaliation to a deadly strike on its embassy in Syria.

Earlier, Joe Biden was asked what his message was to Iran.

You can watch the US president's answer below....

More details now on the news we brought you earlier about that US military moving assets in the Middle East.

An American defence official told Sky News the move was being made to bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase protection of US forces in the region.

Now, our US partner NBC News has reported most of the assets involved are already deployed in the area and just moving around.

Officials said moves were being made to be better positioned for defence of Israel and US assets and in case the US needs to respond to whatever Iran does.

The specific assets being moved in the region have not been identified.

Germany has advised it citizens to leave Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The German foreign offices warned there was a risk of sudden escalation in Tehran's situation with Israel and also of arbitrary arrest in the country.

"In the current tensions, especially between Israel and Iran, there is a risk of a sudden escalation," it wrote in a travel warning.

"It cannot be excluded that air, land and sea transport routes could be affected."

It said Germans were at "concrete risk" of being arrested, interrogated and being given long prison sentences.

"Dual citizens with Iranian and German nationality are especially at risk," it added.

Three Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank today in military raids and settler rampage.

Israeli forces shot dead two Palestinians, including a member of the armed wing of Hamas, in raids.

While, the Palestinian Health Ministry has reported at least one person was killed in an Israeli settler rampage near Ramallah.

The Israeli military said Mohammad Omar Daraghmeh, who has been described as the head of Hamas infrastructure in the Tubas area, was killed during an exchange of fire with security forces.

It said a number of weapons and military-style equipment, including automatic rifles were found in his vehicle.

Hamas confirmed Daraghmeh's death and his membership of its armed Al Qassam Brigades.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA said another man was killed by Israeli forces conducting a raid in the al Far'a refugee camp in Tubas.

Hamas mourned the man's death but did not claim him as a member.

The military said forces carrying out the operation opened fire on Palestinians who threw explosive devices and killed one man it said was attempting to attack them.

Israel has stepped up military raids in the West Bank since launching its operation in Gaza.

Joe Biden has reiterated US support for Israel, saying his administration is "devoted" to its defence.

The US president said his message to Iran, which has threatened to take military action against Israel, was simply "don't".

"We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed," he said.

His comments come after a US defence official confirmed to Sky News that "additional assets" were being moved to the Middle East to "bolster regional deterrence efforts".

Iran has threatened to attack Israel in retaliation to a deadly strike on its embassy in Syria last week.

Israel has been widely blamed for the attack, but has not commented on it publicly.

Around 40 rocket launches have been identified crossing from Lebanon, the Israeli military has said.

In a Telegram post, the Israel Defence Forces said some rockets were intercepted, and the rest fell in open areas.

It also confirmed two Hezbollah explosive drones that had entered Israeli territory from Lebanon had been intercepted.

"Over the last few hours, the IDF struck in a number of locations in southern Lebanon in order to remove a threat," it added.

Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have regularly exchanged fire across the border since the war in Gaza erupted last year.

Throughout the day, we have been reporting on the threat of an Iranian attack on Israel.

The US has warned the threat is "real" and "viable" and, in the last few moments, an American defence official has confirmed "additional assets" are being moved to the Middle East as a result.

Our security and defence analyst Michael Clarke has said it is "quite likely" Iran will attack, and the US has been given signals all day that it could be "imminent".

He added he is "fairly sure" Iran will not let go of the deadly strike on its embassy in Syria - which is what sparked the threat of an attack in the first place.

"The United States is pretty clear now that something is about to happen, maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, but it won't be much further than that, and it might be quite big," Prof Clarke said.

He explained that the US has said it is more likely Iran will launch a direct attack on Israel, and the Iranians do have missiles with the capability to do so.

Israel has made it very clear it will hit back if Iran decides to attack, and Prof Clarke said some Israelis would "almost like that to happen" so they could attack some of Iran's nuclear facilities.
