Arrival Transfer

Collection from heathrow or gatwick airport:, when and where will i meet my driver .

Your driver will enter the arrivals hall at the airport 30 minutes after your flight has landed, based on the flight details you have given us. Our driver will then wait for you in the arrivals hall for 60 minutes. Please ensure you double check your Welcome Letter when you receive it to ensure the flight details you have given us are correct.

You do not have to worry if your flight is delayed en route - all flights are monitored by our staff, and the driver will adjust their arrival at the airport to the actual landing time. If you would like to select a later meeting time, please contact us to arrange this, no less than 72 hours prior to your arrival date.

If you are delayed in immigration, luggage collection or anywhere else in the airport, you must contact us using the emergency number given on your Welcome Letter. Please be aware that emails are not monitored out of hours.

Where will I meet my driver?

Your driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall. After you have collected your luggage, you will walk through into the arrivals hall. Your driver will be holding an ‘International Friends’ board with your name on.

What if I am delayed coming through the airport?

The driver will arrive at the airport 30 minutes after your landing time and will wait in the arrivals hall for 60 minutes. This gives you a total of 90 minutes to make your way to the arrivals hall, which in our experience, is plenty of time.

If you are delayed in coming through the airport, please contact us as soon as possible using the emergency telephone number given in your Welcome Letter. Once we have your details, we will liaise with our drivers and do our best to guarantee your pick up.

If we have not heard from you 60 minutes after the driver has arrived at the airport (90 minutes after your flight has landed), we are no longer able to guarantee your transfer and your driver may be forced to leave. If the driver can wait, additional waiting charges will be applied, which you will be liable for before completing your transfer. We strongly recommend taking out a travel insurance policy to protect you from unforeseen delays or other factors beyond your control.

What if my flight is cancelled or I miss my flight?

If your flight is cancelled before take-off or you miss your flight, please contact us with your new flight details as soon as possible, using the emergency number given in your Welcome Letter. Once we have your updated details, we will liaise with our drivers and do our best to accommodate your new pick up time. Please note that additional charges may apply.

Collection from Central London:

A pre-cruise guide to Southampton

pre cruise hotel southampton

Southampton is one of the UK’s busiest cruise ports and it’s a place close to my heart. The city is my hometown and and somewhere I know very well. I’ve grown up watching (and sailing on) the many cruise ships that arrive in to Southampton on an almost daily basis. We live just five minutes from Royal Victoria Country Park, a coastal haven for cruise ship spotters.

pre cruise hotel southampton

It’s estimated that over 1.7 million cruise ship passengers visit Southampton each year. As well as being the UK base for P&O Cruises and Cunard, you’ll find many other cruise lines using one of the four main cruise terminals.

Although it may not look that exciting, the city actually has a lot to offer and many people are unaware that there’s plenty to do before/after or during a cruise. I’ve put together a few tips on things to do and places to stay when visiting the port.

Where to Stay

Southampton has a range of independent and chain hotels to suit any budget. If you are looking for something economical, consider the centrally located Premier Inn West Quay, Holiday Inn, Jury’s Inn, Ibis or Novotel.

If you want to experience history, stay at the Mercure Dolphin Hotel . Jane Austen used to attend dances here! Next door sits the equally historic Star Hotel , which welcomed members of the Royal family in the 19th century.

The city centre has several high-end hotel options. Grand Harbour Hotel’s iconic glass pyramid will be recognisable to many regular visitors to Southampton. The hotel recently underwent a multi-million pound refurbishment. One of its new additions is the Marco Pierre White Bar and Grill. It also offers reasonably priced spa days, even if you aren’t a guest.

Tucked in to the old city walls, you’ll find the quaint boutique Pig in the Wall Hotel . This is part of The Pig Hotel group, who have luxury accommodation in the New Forest, Devon, Somerset and Dorset. Whilst there is no restaurant, you can get delicious light bites and cocktails in the hotel bar. The 12 quirky rooms are finished to a very high standard. Guests staying here can be transported to the New Forest Pig’s restaurant via Land Rover. I loved my stay at ‘The Pig in the Forest,’ and I can’t recommend it highly enough!

In October, the five-star Southampton Harbour Hotel opened in Ocean Village. Built in the shape of a ship, inside you’ll find a rooftop bar, speciality restaurant and stylish, modern rooms. I’m going to try the restaurant in December and the menu looks really good, particularly the tasting option.

If you don’t mind staying outside of the city centre, the new Hilton Ageas Bowl overlooks the Hampshire cricket ground. As well as an excellent spa, you can dine at Beefy’s, cricketer Ian Botham’s restaurant. The Hilton chain also have a Double Tree just off the M3, on the outskirts of Southampton.

Eating Out in Southampton

Southampton has lots of options for eating out. The recently opened West Quay Watermark  consists solely of restaurants and a cinema. You’ll find all of the big chain names, as well as some independent companies. Wahaca, Byron and Casa Brasil and all worth trying.

pre cruise hotel southampton

Guildhall Square is the redeveloped Cultural Quarter. The area has an impressive selection of quirky restaurants, including the delicious Stable pizza and pie restaurant, Tapas Barcelona and the local Mettricks café chain. I recently tried The Artisan which is great for a cheap, tasty lunch.

Bedford Place is a five minute walk from Guildhall Square. It’s a popular student haunt which is best known for its late night bars and nightclubs. For me, Lakaz Maman Mauritian Street Kitchen is a great place to eat. It is run by Masterchef winner Shelina Permalloy. The restaurant is tiny, so make sure you pre-book.

pre cruise hotel southampton

If I go out, I tend to visit Oxford Street, the Below Bar area or Ocean Village. For me, these areas have the better restaurant options and most are independently owned.

Oxford Street is very close to Ocean Terminal and is a trendy, lively street full of bars and restaurants. Most of these are independently owned, including the popular bars Grand Café, Cargo and White Star. It’s also home to the city’s best known pub  The Grapes , famed for its connection to RMS Titanic.

A short walk from Oxford Street, you’ll find the pretty Ocean Village Marina. This modern, urban development has a small selection of waterfront restaurants, where you can sit outside and enjoy a cocktail.

My favourite places to eat in these areas are:  Coriander Lounge (the best curry in the city), Rancho Steak House , Banana Wharf and  Dancing Man Brewery .

West Quay is the main shopping centre in the city, with over 100 shops. Inside you’ll find most of the well-known brands, including Zara, Apple, John Lewis, H&M and Marks and Spencer. There’s also a good selection of lunchtime dining options, including Carluccio’s, Pizza Express and Nando’s. Everything is undercover, so it’s a great stop on a rainy day. The High Street is also packed with retailers, so there is no shortage of shopping choice.

If you want to experience something different, hop on a train or drive to Winchester. It will take you 20-30 minutes, but this medieval city is packed full of upmarket boutique shops, quaint cafés and trendy bars. Whilst there, you can also visit King Arthur’s Round Table at the Great Hall or Winchester Cathedral.

pre cruise hotel southampton

Alternatively, take a train (or drive) to the neighbouring city of Portsmouth. It’s home to Gunwharf Quays , a lovely waterfront outlet centre comprising over 90 big name brands, including Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren. It also has the best Wagamama in the county! Gunwharf is partially undercover, so it’s better to visit on a dry day.

Attractions

Many ships have set sail from the city on their maiden voyage, including RMS Titanic. You can learn more about the history of Southampton and Titanic at SeaCity Museum. You can also join a guided Titanic walking tour of the city, where you’ll find out more about the city’s connection with the ship.

Other points of interest include the medieval walls, Tudor House and Garden and Southampton City Art Gallery. Sports fans can also do a tour of Southampton Football Stadium, home to the Saints team.

Two things drew us to this hotel - proximity to the City Cruise Terminal and the reviews the hotel received. The hotel was clean and had average size rooms for Europe. The bed was comfortable and everything was in working order. The staff is super friendly and helpful. There is a mall and restaurants within a 5 minute walk, in case you would like to eat outside of the hotel. There are several ports in Southampton. The City Cruise Terminal is the closest --even with carrying luggage, it's only about a 10 minute walk. For the other cruise terminals, a taxi would likely be needed.

Dear rbw8461 Thank you for your comments on your recent stay with us at Premier Inn Southampton West Quay. I am delighted to hear that you were impressed with our hotel from the comfortable bed to the super friendly staff. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future - for the best rates and the quickest way to book please visit our website. Kind Regards

We were looking for a convenient, inexpensive, quiet and clean hotel prior to our cruise and the Premier Inn delivered. The check in was efficient and the location was not only close to the cruise dock but to the Red Hook Ferry dock for a trip to Isle of Wight as well.

  • Cleanliness

Dear JH2717 Thank you for your comments on your recent stay with us at Premier Inn Southampton West Quay. I am delighted to hear that you were impressed with our hotel. Stayed in a quad room (2 adults, 2 teenagers) night before cruising out of Southampton. Obviously there wasn't masses of room but it was perfectly adequate and definitely not the smallest room we have ever had! Arrived around 2pm and there was a small queue at the very unconventional check in point (no actual reception) but we were not kept waiting for our room. Excellent location for the great shopping center, just across the road and the town center, accessed by walking through the shopping center. We made use of the hotels restaurant but you really do need to book early as it does get VERY busy and be prepared to wait a while for your food at the busiest times, but when it comes it is of a decent standard. The staff and service were all pleasant enough, nothing negative on that score except mabe a couple more staff wouldn't have gone amiss. (Isn't that usually the case anywhere though) Breakfast was fine too, the hardest part was finding a table! The hotel is located less than 10minutes walk from the ship port but be advised if travelling with elderly or somebody with walking difficulties AND luggage they may struggle so regardless of distance a taxi would be better for them. Would stay here again.

  • Sleep Quality

We stayed at this hotel the night before catching a ferry to the isle of wight and was an excellent location being a two minute drive to dock gate 7 for the ferry. The staff were very good and our room was excellent with a very comfortable bed. Good shopping centre near by and found a fine real ale pub within 5/10 minutes walk. Would gladly stay here again. Even the heavy rain did not dampen our spirits.

We decided to stop here on the night before we started our cruise to the Med from Southhampton. The hotel is very conveniently located just a short distance from the cruise terminal. Its clean and tidy as per usual for a premier inn. We had dinner and a continental breakfast both of which were very acceptable. My only gripe would be the parking which is in the nearby multistory at £5 per night.

We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future - for the best rates and the quickest way to book please visit our website. Kind Regards

Which are the best hotels for a pre cruise stay in Southampton?

Southampton is the cruise capital of England and a city that we love to visit. We always recommend that if you travelling from afar then arriving the day before is always a sensible idea. A pre cruise stay in a hotel takes the stress out of worrying that you are going to be late to board the ship.

In this post we will show you a selection of Southampton hotels that we have stayed in prior to joining a cruise ship or when we have just been just enjoying a break in this fabulous city.

You can also find some great places to eat in our video here!

To compliment this post, when you have decided which hotel is for you, we recommend you also read Cruise Mummy’s  Southampton Cruise Parking  post too. You will then have all the information you need for a stress free start to your cruise holiday!

What hotels are close to the cruise terminals in Southampton?

Novotel hotel, southampton.

We stayed at the Novotel Hotel for a nights stay before our cruise on Cunard Queen Mary 2. Situated close to the Mayflower Terminal and in easy reach of the centre too. Find out if we thought this is a good hotel for a pre or post cruise stay in Southampton.

Holiday Inn, Herbert Walker Avenue, Southampton

We stayed at the Holiday Inn for one night prior to getting on the Anthem of the Seas Cruise. We booked an executive room so that we had views of the cruise terminal. Check out our room tour and review to see what we thought!

Moxy Hotel, West Quay, Southampton

We stayed at the Moxy Hotel in West Quay Southampton before we joined the MSC Virtuosa Cruise Ship . In this video review we show you the hotel facilities and take you for a tour of the room. It was a great choice within walking distance of the City Cruise Terminal and not far from the other cruise terminals in Southampton too.

Leonardo Royal Southampton Grand Harbour Hotel

We stayed at the Leonardo Royal Southampton Grand Harbour Hotel before we joined the Crown Princess Cruise Ship for a visit. This Southampton hotel is in a prime location and we really enjoyed our stay. It is mid budget, and great for a treat. We are returning to Southampton next April to join the Regal Princess Cruise Ship and have already booked another stay here.

In this video we show you around the hotel and our room so you can see what you get for your money.

Where can I stay on a tight budget near to the cruise ports in Southampton?

Ibis budget southampton hotels.

We were visiting the Royal Princess Cruise Ship at the Ocean Cruise Terminal in Southampton and spent 2 days at the Ibis Budget Hotel. We booked a standard room with breakfast. It is a good choice for a short stay and if you only have a small budget.

Come and have a look around the hotel and room with us and see if it is suitable for your next stay in Southampton.

We *usually* stay in London a couple of days pre-cruise but for our next sailing in November we think we might want to stay in Southampton for a change.  We have *no* familiarity with hotels there...would like to hear others' experience.  I took a *very* quick look on the Marriott site...saw the Moxy for a pretty low price and it seems to have really good reviews...but still would like to hear from others.  Especially if Moxy is not a good choice!

Thanks for the quick reply.  It sounds as if maybe this is a "typical" very small European/English establishment since you say "no elevator".  (Narrow stairs?) I take it you've stayed there?

Yes best service and food ever in a European hotel plus rooms comfy

We're leaving for Southampton tomorrow and we're staying at Moxy until Friday to then board our Anthem of the Seas cruise.  I'll let you know later this week.

I've not stayed at the Moxy (or any other Southampton hotel - why should I, my own bed is half-an-hour away  😏 )

But it and other nearby hotels including the next-door Premier Inn West Quay (the UK's best budget brand) are in the ideal location - convenient for shops, pubs, restaurants and Southampton's few tourist sights. And walkable with wheeled luggage from train & coach stations & two or three of the cruise terminals.

One of those hotels, the Holiday Inn on Herbert Walker Ave (not to be confused with the city's two H.I. Express's) overlooks City Cruise Terminal, which makes t a favourite for those sailing RCI or Celebrity or NCL which normally use City Cruise Terminal.

A precis and useful little map at

https://www.londontoolkit.com/travel/southampton_accommodation.htm

I have stayed in Southampton - 1x at Holiday Inn Herbert Walker, then I switched to 5x at Premier Inn West Quay.

With a few people staying at Moxy, I am wondering if the Moxy is like the Premier Inn West Quay.

Has anybody stayed at both?  Which hotel do you prefer?

We stayed at the Holiday Inn by the cruise port in early June.  Great hotel. The location is excellent and the hotel itself was clean, staff was amazing. They also have a great breakfast to start your day.

Close to the terminal? - Southampton Harbour

Boutique Hotel? - Pig in the Wall

Old English Pub/Hotel? The White Star

Personal favourite being Lime Wood - Not close to the Terminal

Our plans have changed. We're staying in London again for this trip but at a different hotel, still close to Victoria Coach Station.  We'll eventually try Southampton!

Do any hotels break the Southampton port offer shuttle from airport to hotel or from hotel to port?

We are considering a cruise out of Southampton.  How did you get from airport to hotel and then to port?

Don’t know of any Hotel free shuttles from Southampton Airport then to Port.

Airport Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced.  Best to book one’s Hotel/Port Taxi advance as best (most agreeable) times are booked first.

We would have to book a taxi in advance? How would we book them prior to arrival? We are use to having taxis waiting outside hotels or airports.

How did you get to the port? Did the  hotel call a taxi for you or did you book a private car?

If unsure, then ask one’s Hotel Concierge to arrange a Taxi, or if preferred a Limo, from Hotel to Port prior to arrival.  This is just one of the many functions of a Concierge.  No angst…

Which airport are you talking about Southampton airport or Heathrow - LHR (London)?

Catchum

We always stay at the Moxy using Marriott points. It is a good location to get an evening meal, parking at the nearby mall is reasonable and they now give a free drink on arrival- will report back on Thursday! There are always loads of people waiting for their taxi to the cruise port in reception so I'm sure it is not a problem. I would say it is a little above premier inn and the like.

Is the Moxy within walking distance of the Princess Cruise Terminal in Southampton if you only have checked luggage (small backpacks) ?

22 minutes ago, Sn0cruiser said: Is the Moxy within walking distance of the Princess Cruise Terminal in Southampton if you only have checked luggage (small backpacks) ?

Princess use three different terminals at Southampton - the QE2 and Mayflower terminals would both be about a 35 minute walk (1.5 miles), and the Ocean terminal is closer - about 20 minutes (1 mile).

If your cruise is in 2023 you can find out which terminal it’s scheduled to dock at here:

https://www.southamptonvts.co.uk//Live_Information/Shipping_Movements_and_Cruise_Ship_Schedule/Cruise_Ship_Schedule/

(Berth 38/9 = QE2 Terminal, Berth 46 = Ocean Terminal, Berth 106 = Mayflower Terminal)

Hi.  Can you tell me whether or not you experienced any problems getting a taxi to the Cruise Port on the morning of embarkation?  It looks a little far to try to schlepp our luggage on foot.....  Thanks for any advice!

There are five separate cruise terminals at Southampton. If your ship’s docked at the City Terminal, that’s an easy 5 minute walk from the HI and you’d honestly be there by the time you’d loaded your luggage into a cab, driven there and unloaded again at the terminal.

For any of the other terminals a cab would probably be easiest. The HI reception staff can help call one for you, or use Uber. Southampton has no shortage of cabs so finding one shouldn’t be an issue.

Thanks so much for the "uber-fast" response!!  Happy Sailing!

I had the hotel call the taxi company in advance to reserve a taxi for embarkment day.  The taxi driver said embarkment and disembarkment days are the busiest days for the taxi companies.

The Premier Inn West Quay had a taxi phone beside the elevator.

I was more than happy with Novotel Southampton last June pre-Princess cruise.

Thanks

Cunard added a 4th luxury cruise ship to its famous fleet — see what it'll be like on the new Queen Anne

  • Cunard  welcomed its fourth ship and newest in 14 years, the 2,996-guest Queen Anne.
  • The 114,000-ton vessel has amenities like an Indian restaurant and pool under a retractable glass roof.
  • Queen Anne's 2024 itineraries, primarily in Europe, start at $300 per person for a two-night cruise.

Insider Today

Cunard has operated 249 ships throughout its 184 years in operation, including the famous Queen Mary and Queen Mary 2. But it's been 14 years since the cruise line has launched a new vessel — until now.

Luxury cruisers , meet Queen Anne. It's Cunard's latest 2,996-guest ship, replete with 4,300 art pieces, archery, and the company's signature high-end flair. Its arrival was so highly anticipated that every cabin on its May 3 maiden voyage was fully reserved in minutes, the BBC reported.

The Carnival Corp. brand may be storied, but that doesn’t mean it’s past its prime.

pre cruise hotel southampton

Katie McAlister, president of Cunard, recently told the BBC that its bookings have grown 25% since the beginning of 2024 and are now the best they've been in a decade.

So it should come as no surprise that several of Queen Anne's 2024 itineraries are almost sold out.

Cunard isn’t in the business of building bigger.

pre cruise hotel southampton

Luxury cruise lines are beloved for their small-ship experience. Cunard is no different.

The new 114,000-ton cruise liner is the company's second-largest, although it can carry more guests than any of its other ships.

However, at a 2,996-guest and 1,225-crew capacity, Queen Anne is still tiny compared to the mass-market cruise industry's newest ships , the largest of which can carry 10,000 people.

Queen Anne's cabins are divided into four categories, listed from most to least luxurious: Queens Grill, Princess Grill, Britannia Club, and Britannia.

pre cruise hotel southampton

Despite being the cheapest option, the Britannia accommodations have high-end amenities like sparkling wine, Penhaligon toiletries, and tea and coffee machines.

That's nothing compared to the most luxurious Queens Grill suites, where guests get amenities like pillow menus, stocked mini-bars, a butler, fruit, and pre-dinner canapes.

Forget the sparkling wine — Queens Grill travelers get a bottle of Champagne.

Cabin categories are especially important for Cunard, not for reasons you might expect.

pre cruise hotel southampton

Besides how luxurious your hotel room at sea is, your cabin influences where you have breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Guests in the Princess Grill suites dine at the Princess Grill restaurant, while Britannia Club guests stick to the Britannia Club restaurant, and so on.

Guests in the higher-end Princess and Queens cabins also get a pretty sweet bonus: an exclusive lounge with infinity hot tubs.

Regardless of your cabin, the 14-deck ship has plenty of areas for all guests to relax under the sun.

pre cruise hotel southampton

For example, the Pavilion. It's one of Queen Anne's go-to places for an afternoon swim, nighttime movie viewing, silent disco, and not-so-silent live music, all under a retractable glass roof.

The ship's pool club also has plenty of lounge seats for a more traditional pool deck experience. For something indoors, head to the drawing and game rooms instead.

Like every new cruise ship, Queen Anne has a pickleball court.

But unlike every new cruise ship, it also has archery — coaches, bows, and arrows included.

Travelers looking for a less intense afternoon can instead try their hand at the putting green, shuffleboard, or quoits.

Not confident in your athletic abilities? Don't worry — there's a bar nearby, too.

If you lose your pickleball match, you can retail therapy your pain away at Queen Anne’s high-end stores.

Travelers have been splurging big on their cruise vacations . On Queen Anne (and with help from one of the ship's personal shoppers), this could include a Bremont watch or Chanel makeup.

Or, do as cruisers do: Eat and drink the pain away.

The ship has 15 eateries. Unfortunately, you'll have to pay extra for the Mediterranean, Indian, Japanese, steakhouse grill, alfresco, and British restaurants.

Thankfully, the food hall-style buffet, room service, and cabin-assigned dining rooms are included in the fare.

Feeling peckish in the afternoon? Afternoon tea is held in the Queens Room, the same venue that hosts events like ballroom dancing and Cunard's signature black-tie galas.

Of course, a cruise wouldn’t be complete without a casino, spa, and nighttime shows.

Queen Anne is showing two new productions, including an adaptation of the classic British film "Brief Encounter."

For more casual entertainment, the ship also has a "show bar" helmed by a variety of musicians and entertainers.

For a more relaxing afternoon, try the spa's cryotherapy, "experience showers," and salt saunas.

Afterwards, to keep the wellness trend going, grab a healthy bite at the veggie and "sustainably sourced protein"-forward Wellness Cafe. Its kombucha bellinis are technically good for you, right?

Cunard is beloved for its regular transatlantic cruises on its Queen Mary 2 ocean liner.

In 2025, Queen Anne will embark on its first three-month around-the-world cruise. However, for the most part, it's not scheduled for repeat long-haul journeys .

Instead, in 2024, the ship will be homeported in Southampton, UK and travel on two- to 19-night itineraries across Europe.

The cheapest way to experience the new ship is a two-night summer cruise from Southampton to Hamburg, Germany, which currently starts at $300 per person.

But if money is no problem, the 18-night roundtrip Hamburg cruise during Christmas and the New Year might pique your interest — and your wallet. The itinerary's luxurious Queens Grill suites start at $19,350 per person.
