My husband and I are looking at doing a road trip from Denver to Nashville and back next summer - we have two weeks whilst my daughter is on camp in Denver. Looking for suggestions for routes, things to see, where to stop, stay, eat etc. Thank you!

Head south to I 40 and do Albuquerque and Santa Fe, then Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Memphis and on to Nashville.

Head back to St. Louis, Kansas City and on to Denver.

road trip nashville to denver

What are your interests? Are you seeking city based stuff? Are you hikers? Photographers? Interested in music?

Why Nashville? I'm not saying that's wrong or anything wrong with Nashville. Actually I think Nashville's a great city, very vibrant, but it's an unusual choice for somebody who comes from the UK and starts in Denver, or so we have found from most enquiries on this forum, hence asking for more info about you and where you've been before perhaps.

My daughter is going to a summer camp in Denver and my husband's really into music and has always wanted to go to Nashville!!

Are you also interested in Memphis? New Orleans?

What type of music?

Yes could do a long road trip but I 70 route from St. Louis back to Denver is super boring imo.

Let us know your thoughts and be glad to help!!

Driving between Denver and Nashville is indeed one of the least interesting possible drives in the USA, with lots of flat plains with agriculture and not much else. Even most of the cities you will pass are not the greatest, to be honest.

The drive, of course, is perfectly possible and in summer will present no problems, though.

These are my own thoughts to offer you to consider.

If you are headed to Denver, because you wish/need to accompany your daughter there and back on the flights , then use being in Denver for the huge wealth of wonderful natural attractions and scenery that's on your door step. Even if you are not outdoorsy, hikers, as long as you enjoy looking at great scenery or taking photos, there will be tons to see and hopefully enjoy. We are just back from a 3 week trip in the area, and it's not our first. Granted we love all that outdoors stuff, but it's pretty spectacular and nothing like what you can find in the UK or near Europe.

If none of that really appeals, then consider getting a flight to Nashville or a destination close to Nashville. Then do a road trip that ticks the music box big time. Nashville of course has country music coming out it's pores. There's live music to be found from 10 in the morning in the bars along Broadway, and as the day gets older, so more and more venues open there doors, so by early evening you are spoilt for choice. That's all free, BTW. Ticketed events happen on most days in either the Grand Ole Opry (well out of town) or in the Ryman Auditorium right in downtown.

However, PeachBelle's post lists so many other great music cities that are well known for other genres of music and they are all close by so a 2 week or just less trip could allow you to major on live music to your heart's content, and then there's Elvis's home in Tupelo to throw into the mix.

What you do need to consider however is that all that area in the south will be very, very hot and humid in summer. We did pretty much that trip this past April when temps were comfortable, even past midnight, so the strolling from venue to venue was not an issue and the lively street scenes in New Orleans, Nashville and Memphis were ideal after dark. You are likely to be hiding in air conditioned cars , bars or hotel rooms during they day in summer. Thus, this kind of trip is best enjoyed at other months of the year.

FYI, BA (from LHR) have just launched a non stop service to Nashville (BNA) starting in May, 2018. So, you could do an adults only trip to that area another time, as a different option, too!

Agree with SWT. We did a CO trip end of May. Lots of great places to visit in 2 weeks there.

Giant cowboy boot statue outside the Big Texan Steakhouse along Route 66 in Amarillo, Texas

A musical road trip from Nashville to Denver

I pulled up at the barrier and handed my documents to the man in the car-hire booth. He looked at my seven-seater, five-metre-long Dodge Caravan, empty but for me, my bright yellow suitcase and a violin. "Have you lost your friends?" he asked, peering into the cavernous interior. "Oh no," I replied. "I just haven't met them yet."

It was only when I was describing the incident to someone later, and remembering the car-hire guy's pitying look, that I realised how this must have sounded: like a lonely hippy hoping to pick up hitch-hikers. In reality, I was about to transport three musicians, a music writer and a banjo-maker between Nashville, Tennessee , and Denver, Colorado , 1,700 miles away. We had three days to make the trip (we were shuttling between festivals), at an average of 10 hours' driving per day. With that much in-car time – not to mention two banjos, a fiddle and a ukelele – I figured we would need our space.

The shortest route between Tennessee and Colorado is the I-70 through Missouri and Kansas. But the I-40 would take us via Jackson and Amarillo, and our first stop would be Memphis. Think of the playlist opportunities! And while we hadn't time to visit Graceland, we had heard a whisper of a joint that served the best barbecue in the city.

With a tight schedule, we called ahead to reserve a table – which was embarrassing when the Interstate BBQ turned out to be, as the name suggested, a truck stop by the freeway. But it lived up to the hype: our plates were soon full of sticky ribs the length of our forearms, not to mention the house speciality, BBQ spaghetti – sweet and rich, concealing huge hunks of meat in its wriggly depths. We returned to the car with four hours still to travel and a pact that we would keep the windows open.

The glory of an American road trip is its evolving landscape. Tennessee offered its lush green hills and, at night, the dark immensity of the Mississippi, so black that no one could say for sure when we had finally crossed it. Arkansas lightened the mood with its pentecostal churches – tiered like wedding cakes and lit up like Vegas casinos – and its signs directing us toward the Clinton Presidential Library one moment, and an Adult Superstore the next. Oklahoma's cornfields, splayed out either side of the freeway, seemed benign in the next day's sunlight – until we saw the mangled billboards and trees sheared by June's tornado and, later, passed a ruin of a trailer park, the upturned metal cabins flung like toys after a toddler's tantrum.

ben and ashley

With so many musicians in the car, two things were inevitable. One, that we would sing our way through Oklahoma! (after all, there was a bright golden haze on the meadow). The other, that we would stop in Oklahoma City to visit the American Banjo Museum . The instrument still gives many the screaming heebie jeebies, but its history is fascinatingly intertwined with that of the United States, and many of the exhibits, decorated, inlaid and veneered, are pure artworks in themselves.

The I-40 crosses north Texas at the panhandle, its narrowest point, although its extraordinary ranchland rolls out, people-free, to horizons that seem further away than you've ever travelled. By the roadside, the Big Texan, a shamelessly imitation wild-west steak house, advertises its "free 72oz steak" for many miles and only reveals the catch on arrival: you have to eat the entire thing, and multiple accompanying dishes, within an hour. We paled at the challenge, although not at the generous helpings of beer, served in plastic cowboy boots that they let us take as souvenirs.

Unfortunately, only one of our group had remained sober to drive us to our hotel, several hours away, and it was the one whose other car is a Mustang. Around midnight, I woke to hear this driver declaring that she would try a shortcut down an old, unpopulated country road. She also announced that our fuel was running dangerously low, and that she hadn't seen a gas station in a long while. As we lurched off the freeway, cutting up exactly the kind of lorry that hunted down Dennis Weaver in Duel , I reached for my notebook and wrote, in a shaky hand: " We are going to die. "

Travelling through New Mexico by night would have been eerie even if we hadn't been writing ourselves into a horror movie – a full moon picked out its rocky outcrops in spooky silhouettes and by the time we reached our hotel, a light hysteria had taken hold. Luckily, we had booked into a rather smart lodge rather than pitching up at a dodgy motel. If I had two pieces of advice for driving the States, they would be these – everywhere will take you three hours longer to drive than Google Maps suggests, and a junior suite that sleeps five can be surprisingly economical. You'll be thankful for it at 3am.

What else did I learn on the road trip? Well, the drive between New Mexico and Colorado is one of the most otherworldly experiences you can have without booking a flight to Mars. "Is this the way to Amarillo?" will bomb in a carful of Americans (it wasn't a hit over there). But you can, just, perform a banjo/ukulele/fiddle trio in a moving car. If you're careful where you aim your bow.

Engineering students gain real-world knowledge for future success during Italy trip

More than 20 Vanderbilt engineering students recently visited Italy during their spring break to not only see some iconic structures, but also learn the engineering behind the Pantheon and Venice’s sophisticated floodgates so they could apply that knowledge to future engineering projects of their own.

The trip was part of an inaugural class taught this semester in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and sought to give the 22 students a deeper understanding of the engineering behind some of Italy’s structures, such as the ancient Pantheon and MOSE project designed to protect the city of Venice from flooding. The MOSE project is an integrated system consisting of rows of mobile gates that uses air pressure to keep water levels in check.

As part of their class assignments, the students worked in groups to design floodgates as well as build and test concrete dome prototypes based on their studies of how the Pantheon was constructed. The class was originally scheduled for 15 students, but instructors increased the number because of interest.

“We wanted to help students understand the history and the beauty of structural engineering with the hope that they will be able to better work with architects to achieve beautiful and structurally sound buildings in their careers,” said Lori Troxel, professor of the practice of civil and environmental engineering and a class instructor.

While in Italy, the students traveled to Rome, Venice, and Milan. In Milan, they spent time with architects who had worked with the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, and met with a group of students from Polytechnic University of Milan who were taking a class on structural health monitoring. In Venice, they talked to engineers involved with the city’s unique flood gates. And in Rome, the students visited ancient sites like the Pantheon, the Coliseum, and the Roman Forum.

Winnie Huang, a junior majoring in civil engineering, marveled at the construction of the Pantheon.

“Seeing the Pantheon in person made clear why its design has allowed for it to last thousands of years,” said Huang. “Despite the cracking as a result of the hoop stresses of the dome, the Pantheon has notably stayed structurally sound due to its construction with Roman concrete, which contains self-healing properties. Although we didn’t personally have the opportunity to work with Roman concrete for our project, we took inspiration from the Pantheon in designing our own miniature concrete dome.”

For Santino Clemente, whose grandparents are Italian immigrants, the trip was his third time in Italy and one he had looked forward to because after each visit he found himself wanting to go back. Before the latest trip, he watched a documentary about the MOSE project.

“Being there in person and getting to ask all our questions to the engineers was an awesome experience,” said Clemente, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering.

After returning from Italy, the students tested floodgates they had constructed in a creek at a park near the university. In constructing the floodgates, they had a budget of $50 and could use whatever scrap materials they found.

Philmon Gashaw, also a junior mechanical engineering major, said his group used a magnet, wood, and acrylic to design their floodgate. “We put it in the creek and saw how well we could stop the water,” said Gashaw. “It worked surprisingly better than I thought.”

Many of the students applied what they learned about the MOSE project to the construction of their floodgates. For Clemente and his team, he said it was the angle for the wall of their floodgate.

“We learned that the MOSE gates are lifted up to a 42-degree angle to prevent a straight-on impact from the tide, which would result in a much higher force,” he said. “Therefore, even though the top of our gate was fully vertical, we added a ramp at the bottom that guided the water upward. This prevented the water from pushing our floodgate on first impact.”

Ghina Absi, assistant professor of the practice of civil and environmental engineering and a class instructor, said she enjoyed seeing the students’ engagement and excitement as they worked on the projects, and hopes what they learned will benefit them down the road.

“Even when they’re trying to solve a tiny problem of stopping a flow in a tiny channel next to campus, they will be able to take all the lessons they’ve learned and apply them to the big project I know they are capable of doing in the future,” said Absi.

Last year during spring break, Troxel led a group of engineering professors and students to Israel as part of a different program to learn about the country’s water recycling programs and bring those lessons back to share with Sterling Ranch, a 21st century sustainable city south of Denver, Colorado, that has doubled as a training site and test bed for Vanderbilt students and professors since 2015.

Trips to destinations like Italy also highlight experiential learning opportunities through an academic degree requirement called Immersion Vanderbilt , which provided funds to reduce student costs for the trip to Italy.

“There’s no better way for students to learn than to provide them with real-world experience,” said Cynthia Paschal, senior associate dean for undergraduate education. “Study abroad initiatives like these are examples of the ways Vanderbilt is assuring our students are prepared to compete on a global stage.”

The Italy trip was made possible by generous financial support from FINFROCK, a leader in design-build construction in Central Florida. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering provided a staffer to help with organization and on-site logistics, and the School of Engineering provided support to ensure that all students could participate, regardless of their financial circumstances.
