  • CarlosFR 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Enjoyable Nile Cruise on MS Mayflower Thoroughly enjoyed a 3-night/4-day cruise from Aswan to Luxor with Mayfair Cruises on their ship the M.S. Mayflower, which was in great shape, clean, and included many on-board amenities. There was a sun deck covering the entire top of the boat and lounge areas on each deck to relax or gather with friends or family. My cabin was small but had a large, comfortable bed taking up most of the room. Closet space was ample with a small safe. A large bottle of water was provided daily. The bathroom was small but nice and clean. Down-time between the daily excursions and meals was spent on the nice sun deck. The excursions to the Nile temples were a highlight for this Egypt trip. Our cruise guide Adel was very knowledgeable and spent the time to highlight unique things at each place visited, and we came away with a better understanding of Egypt and its history. It was nice to return to the Mayflower after a long day to dine, rest and relax as the boat cruised to the next location. On-board service was very good, especially with the wait staff in the dining room. Enjoyed each meal service, especially the dinner that highlighted Egyptian dishes, but just wish that was offered every night! Read more Written January 27, 2024

  • JoeCBansteadUK 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Recommended I stayed on the Royal Lily for four nights in December as part of a small group. Staff throughout pleasant, efficient and helpful with a good understanding of English. We boarded in Luxor and sailed to Aswan with various stops en route. Whilst this boat is rated as 5 star it still had to berth at the various stops with the rest of the river cruisers - we were never more than 2 deep on the docks, but I suspect that this could be 4 deep depending upon arrival time etc. Not a problem as the transit across the boats is easy. The river was apparently quieter than normal during this peak period - probably due to the well reported problems elsewhere in the region. Security at docks and sites visited was reassuringly clearly visible. Well appointed cabin - clean & comfortable. Necessarily compact bathroom worked well. Please note that when moored alongside another boat the curtains need to be closed for privacy. The style of the cabin was more old school/wood panelling than modern stainless steel/glass. Suited me perfectly. Public areas were spacious enough, clean and modern. The sun deck with a small pool and bar was well equipped and comfortable with plenty of shade. Food in the water level restaurant (with plenty of windows/natural light) was to a high standard, with plenty of choice to suit all tastes, be they Arabic, European or Asian cuisine. 3 nights were buffet style - 1 a preordered table d’hote menu. Buffet breakfasts were superb, with a wide variety of dishes. Speciality coffees were available at extra cost - well worth it. Beer and wine available at reasonable prices for for a predominantly muslim country. On board WiFi was a bit patchy at peak times, but acceptable for my needs - basically e mail & WA. For those with limited mobility there is no lift. Recommended, but wouldn’t want to travel on a boat of lesser star rating! Read more Written December 31, 2023

  • 818merediths 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Nile Done Right This was a lovely introduction to the Nile. Rooms were very well appointed and the staff was incredibly friendly and kind. Swimming on the upper deck with the Nile rolling by was magic. Food was great (so much food!). Entertainment every night was fun. We did upgrade our room when we arrived at a discount. So that might have influenced my feelings a bit. But I truly felt this was something special. Read more Written July 13, 2023
  • P679WDkayl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles 4 nights of bliss on the Sonesta St. george The boat was amazing, our room was big and clean and just pure luxury. On arrival we found a basket of fruit and wine in our room. The food on the boat was fantastic, something for everyone's taste, From steak, pasta, fish, chicken and the desserts were incredible. We took so many photos and the views from the boat were amazing. Shout out to Mina, the assistant manager of the bar, he looked after us so well, Afternoon tea on the top deck was a real treat with incredible views. The swimming pool was just right and there was a seated area that was covered in to help you escape the sun. There was entertainment every night in the bar/lounge, big comfortable armchairs. I bought an alabya to really feel part of Egyptian night. The boat was moored right on front of Edfu temple which is lit up at night and was an incredible backdrop to photos. I highly recommend taking a trip on this boat. Read more Written July 1, 2023
  • DouglasL955 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful and Elegant The Farah is a beautiful ship. Compared to the other Nile Cruise Boats it makes the others look old and unkempt. The staff are absolutely wonderful and the food is excellent. As in all 3rd world countries, beware of the ice and uncooked foods. When selecting cabins stay away from low number rooms and stick to rooms numbered above 307 and 407. Below that number the rooms are basically inside cabins. If you're going to cruise the Nile make sure you have a sliding door to the outside. Read more Written May 30, 2023
  • Sightsee40886577666 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best Nile Cruise A long cruise between Cairo and Aswan is the best way to appreciate Egypt's history and scenery. We loved the days of cruising past unspoilt villages and river scenes and the less-visited sites including the amazing colours of Abydos and Denderah temples as well as re-visiting the still uncrowded classic sites at Cairo, Luxor and Aswan with a great guide! Wonderful service, food and entertainment on board the Darakum, including dining on deck several times. A highlight was a manual lock and just passing under a bridge by a few inches with the whole top deck lowered on this specially designed boat. Special thanks to Ahmed the manager, head chef Naser and restaurant manager Abbas and their teams - they all feel like friends now. Read more Written May 29, 2023

The food was okay, at times was repetitive and somewhat bland. The workers were fantastic at their jobs, but I did not necessarily appreciate the inappropriate looks and behaviors they had to my wife during this trip. Still, I do commend the work ethic they had. • P3784MHerikas 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing cruise - great staff and food. Doesn't disappoint! We very much enjoyed this cruise, the first we have ever been on, and it was an easy way to see the main sights in Upper Egypt without needing to make arrangements and do research on each. The staff on board the boat was exceptional, offering help and advice at all turns, very courteous and friendly throughout our trip. We arrived a bit early, and they prepared our cabin right away. The cabin was very comfortable with a lovely view of the Nile from the large window. The staff regularly checked to see if we needed more towels or anything of the sort. The food was great, and the staff went out of their way to offer to make special dishes (grilled chicken, for example, or grilled steak) for one of my kids who is a picky eater. I would definitely recommend this for a pleasant and seamless trip to Upper Egypt. Honestly, I can’t say enough about how great the staff and the food were. Excellent service all around. There were only three areas that I saw for improvement which I will mention for those who are considering different options. The first was that though our guide, Mustafa, was very friendly and punctual, he seemed to want to finish our visits as quickly as possible and did not show a lot of enthusiasm for the sites. I recognize we visited during Ramadan, and that he was fasting (not easy to take tours around during the heat of the day without water), so I would like to think he might be a more attentive tour guide outside of Ramadan. But overall the group felt he was giving us the minimum of information and a bit impatient and unwilling to wait for members of the group who took longer to move through the site. The Wifi on this boat is essentially non-existent. While this did not make a big difference to us in general, there were moments - like when we finished the tour and needed an uber to the airport - when it was really inconvenient. It also made it hard for us to look up additional information on the sights or use google maps to see what else we would like to visit in a town, for example, or to check in to our flights. When I desperately needed an uber to get to the airport, a staff person at reception was able to give me a hotspot, so that is always an option in a pinch. Finally, the jacuzzi did not work. Given how small the pool was (this was disappointing to the kids), we would have really enjoyed to use the jacuzzi in the evenings. When I asked at the front desk, they confirmed it was out of order. I would have preferred they told us up front that this was not available and apologize, since we had been told this would be available. Again, not a big deal, but given the price of the cruise, we sort of expected everything to be up and running. Oh, one more thing. The massage/spa person was very aggressive and at one point I was laying down to nap on my deck chair - when I opened my eyes, to my surprise, he was sitting in the chair next to me, looking at me and said ‘don’t go to sleep now. When do you want to schedule your massage?’ He had already approached me and invited me into the massage room to make his pitch, so I really didn’t need a second offer. I knew where to find him :) I had told him I did not plan on getting a message, so the insistence was a bit annoying. Read more Written May 1, 2023

Truly the most amazing staff - everyone was friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The views from the boat as we went up the Nile were truly unforgettable. Mustafa was a fantastic guide and catered to our group which was comprised of several family with kids of varying ages. Seeing the different sites was just an incredible experience and each one was different. The restaurant and reception staff were amazing - so friendly and always smiling. The food was great - different every meal and catered to a wide variety of tastes. The room was wonderful as well - and the view outside as we were sailing was just breathtaking. Egypt is considered the oldest travel destination on globe. In a land where the past sits overlooking the present, Egypt is a country that fills the senses. Egypt is a land with well-defined boundaries. To the east and west are vast deserts. To the north is the Mediterranean sea. To the south is the land of Nubia.

Egypt has amassed approximately 7000 years of history and civilization; but besides its breathtaking Pharaonic and other ancient attractions, Egypt also currently possesses unique cultures, traditions, food, people and, exciting activities. For centuries, tourists have flocked to Egypt to admire its ancient pyramids and temples. The country also has its fair share of natural wonders.  For all ancient Egyptians, the world was filled with mystery. Much of what they experienced in the world around them was unknowable and frightening. The ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses represented aspects of the Egyptians’ natural and “supernatural” surroundings and helped them understand its many aspects.

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-03-31 06:38

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.

Closest Cruise Ports Near Me: Midwest United States

Here's how to choose the best cruise port.

By Robert Schrader | Published on July 19, 2023

If you live in the Midwest United States and Google "cruise ports near me," you might initially feel shocked. As a born-and-bred Midwesterner, I know all too well what an ordeal getting to the coast can be! Whether you fly west to Los Angeles and Seattle, or southward to Houston, New Orleans or Miami, the idea of having to take a flight before you take your cruise can be daunting. I, however, prefer to think of it as exhilarating — here's why.

The Truth About Cruising From The Midwest

Couple getting Ready to Board at the Airport

There are a lot of reasons to love living in the Midwest — easy access to the ocean is not among them. Growing up, I remember many a long drive to the Gulf or the Atlantic, arguably more than any beach or seafood meal. As an adult, however, I can appreciate that there's opportunity in having to reach one destination en route to another, even as an adult who's spent a fair few living outside the middle of the country.

Indeed, rather than asking, "Where is the closest cruise port to me?" you might instead ask where the coolest one is. Depending on how much time you've allocated for your cruise and the preferences of the people in your party, you can think of the place where you set sail from as a trip-within-a-trip. Before your ship leaves or after it returns to port, make the most of your travels by diving into the city where you'll embark on your journey.

Another factor to keep in mind, beyond convenience and personal preferences, is that not all cruise destinations are accessible from every cruise port. Obviously, if you're cruising to the Caribbean , doing so from the West Coast will be a very circuitous journey indeed. Likewise, the vast majority of Alaska cruises depart from Seattle, or even from ports in Alaska itself, depending upon which one you choose.

Here, too, lies an opportunity. Personally, rather than wondering about the nearest cruise port to me, I sometimes think of the two main decisions I need to make — where I'll leave from and where I'll go — together. Heading to Central America from New Orleans, for example, is a package deal. You can see the stunning beaches of Belize on the front end, then swim through a world of sugar and dough with beignets  at Café du Monde in New Orleans on the back end. Which combination will you choose?

The Best Cruise Port To The Caribbean

Sunny Day Beach, Galveston, Texas

It's no surprise that the Caribbean is one of the world's most diverse cruising destinations, with as many ports to visit as there are postcard-perfect beaches. Some of the most popular ports for Caribbean cruises include Galveston (near Houston), New Orleans and the ports of Fort Lauderdale and Miami in South Florida. These ports are just a quick — and often affordable — flight from the Midwestern United States.

The Galveston  cruise port is a popular option, for many reasons. For travelers who are flying, the fact that both of Houston's airports are hubs means you'll have your pick of convenient flights from the Midwest. Driving to the coast? While the Houston area isn't exactly close to most of the Midwest, it's a relatively straight shot. As far as what to do in Galveston? Let's just say that if the beaches (and beach boardwalk) don't entice, the amazing seafood meals and century-old architecture should do the trick.

When it comes to Florida  cruise ports, meanwhile, you've got even more options. If you can plan for a few days here before or after your cruise vacation, you can explore all of South Florida, and maybe even beyond that. With a couple of days, you can explore everywhere from Palm Beach to South Beach; and with a few more than that, you could do a Florida Keys road trip.

Considering the New Orleans  cruise port? This is a personal favorite of mine. Usually, I like to set sail for my destination (typically somewhere in Mexico or Central America, but sometimes farther east) and then return to the Big Easy as my reward for a trip well-taken. Depending on my mood, I may just chill out in the French Quarter, explore churches and cemeteries, stuff myself on Jambalaya or even boat through the nearby bayous.

Where To Begin Your Pacific Pilgrimage

Santa Monica Pier at Sunset, LA

Pacific cruises aren't as typical of a choice for Midwestern travelers for one obvious reason: Los Angeles  is a lot farther than Louisiana! On the other hand, no matter where on America's left coast you hit the open sea from, Pacific cruises are more than worth the journey of getting there. This would be true even if you didn't spend a couple days in the port city but is especially true if you do.

Headed to Mexico? Even though ports in the LA area will never appear in a list of "cruise ports near me" if you live in cities like Chicago or St. Louis, SoCal is more than just a gateway to Mexico's Baja Peninsula or offshore Catalina Island. Sometimes, I like to spend a day or two here and rent a car. From there, I head north along the 101 to Malibu or Santa Barbara, or dig into unique neighborhoods — Thai town and its spicy food are a personal favorite place to stop.

If you have a little longer before or after your cruise, you have endlessly more options. Head south, whether to the OC and Laguna Beach or all the way to San Diego. You could also drive eastward into the desert, whether to the famous Joshua Tree or to somewhere more obscure or even farther north along the Pacific Coast Highway to Big Sur and beyond. Los Angeles is the city of dreams not just for Hollywood hopefuls, but also for travelers with inspiration and curiosity.

Apart from the Los Angeles cruise port, the most popular place to set sail is probably Seattle, which is a common jumping-off-point for cruises to Alaska. Here, you can spend a night or two and explore exciting neighborhoods like Downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill, or stay longer and hike Mt. Rainier or destinations even farther into the rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. Some Alaska cruises even depart from Anchorage. If you fly here, spend some time kayaking near Seward or even enjoy a drive north to Fairbanks before you head for even wilder waters.

The Europe Cruising Quandary

Spain Barcelona Barceloneta Beach City View

While it's technically possible to cruise all the way to Europe from ports on the east coast of the United States, many shorter European cruises actually depart from European ports. Some popular options include Barcelona, the timeless city of Antoni Gaudí where the curious sounds of Catalán  are as audible as more familiar Castellano, and the floating city of Venice, where your cruise vessel isn't the only ship that can take you somewhere exciting.

In this instance, being in the Midwest doesn't actually put you at much of a disadvantage compared to other American travelers. You may need to connect somewhere if you don't live in a city with a major hub (as I don't), but everyone who isn't sailing the whole way to Europe will have to get on a plane . If you think a Europe cruise will float your boat, then, don't stress out about the journey to your destination.

Instead, get excited: Most major European ports are well-connected to regions and cities you're unlikely to visit on your cruise itinerary — this really is two trips in one. Cruising from Athens? Use your days in the ancient city as an opportunity to head to inland Greek destinations like Mount Olympus and the monastery of Meteora, or even to head north into Balkan countries like Albania, Macedonia, Bosnia and beyond.

When "the closest cruise port to me" is on the other side of the ocean, it also invites you to make more adventurous choices. Everyone loves the Mediterranean, for example, by why not head north and sail beneath summer's Midnight Sun? Whether from the fairy tale city of Copenhagen and its Little Mermaid statue or from London where traveling the world can be as simple as visiting a few different neighborhoods, Northern Europe is a hotter cruise destination than its temperatures suggest.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

royal lotus nile cruise ship

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

royal lotus nile cruise ship

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

royal lotus nile cruise ship

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

royal lotus nile cruise ship

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

royal lotus nile cruise ship

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

royal lotus nile cruise ship

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

royal lotus nile cruise ship

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
