Sade equals pure perfection Three times. That’s the approximate number of times I've seen Sade in concert.
And I remember each one. The first instance, I was a concert newbie. It was 1990 something and I was still in high school. I vaguely recall the opening acts (Digable Planets and, according to my sister who attended with me, Boyz II Men). The main thing I recollect about that show? It was the best concert ever!
Up until that point, I think the only other concert I had attended was New Edition (that was 1989 and I only know this because I still have the program). Between Sade and New Edition, I don’t know who I loved more. As a child of the 80s, Sade was one artist on constant play in my cassette player. As I reminisce, I wonder what I knew about love being a crime in the fifth grade, but back then you could catch me belting out Is It A Crime like the boy in my social studies class had mistreated my poor10-year-old heart.
But back to the second time I attended a Sade show. It was Sept.18, 2001 – The Lover’s Rock Tour (at this stage of my life, I kept concert stubs. Maybe I knew one day I would need to refer to it because blogging would be an important aspect of my life). Seven days prior, hijackers changed America forever, so the mood was somber.
India.Arie, who was a relatively newcomer, opened the show. I was already in love with her, so to see both women on the same stage had me in heaven. There was only one problem – I was on the lawn at the Chronicle Pavilion. Afterwards, I realized that I will never, EVER again sit on the lawn. Sade looked like an ant and jumbo screens weren’t that effective in translating what was really happening on stage. You know what I remember most about this show? It was, again, the BEST concert I had ever been to! Sade's stage presence was mesmerizing; the show just left you speechless. There isn’t an artist out then (or now) that can put on a concert like Sade. Absolutely, positively NO ONE! (Well, maybe Michael Jackson, but I’ll never know because, well, I didn’t get a chance to see him in action before he, well, you know.) Ten years later, I still stand by that statement. Sade doesn’t need back up dancers; she doesn’t have to fly through the air or dance from one end of the stage to the other in four-inch stilettos.
She is pure entertainment just standing on stage, holding a microphone and singing from her gut. Sade has a stage presence that simply captivates you. Her moves are simple, yet fluid.
But they are enough. Ten years is a long time for an artist to be away. Would Sade still have it? Could she still put on a performance that I had previously proclaimed to be the best shows I had ever witnessed? Aug. 27, 2011 was I received the answer to those questions. As I sit here listening to the playlist I created in iTunes of Sade’s setlist from her Solider of Love Tour, I feel chills running through my body once again – all these months later.
From the first beat of Solider of Love to the encore, Sade kept the crowd mesmerized and on our feet. The best way to describe her vocals is to say they are pure perfection. She sounds exactly like the CD – and I do mean exactly – only 100times better. The same can be said for the rest of the band. While Sade is the front woman, the band deserves as much credit as she does for creating such timeless music. Besides the music, what makes this show so incredible are the stage transformations. I can’t even begin to depict what takes place in the background, so I won’t even make an attempt. I will say, Sade becomes one with the stage at a certain point and you’re left wondering how it’s even possible. The setlist (see below) was a great mix from all albums. Lover’s Rock was the only song missing that I really wanted to hear. She blew the roof off the house with Is It A Crime (which just happens to be my all-time favorite Sade song. Remember the fifth grade?). When she hit that last note – whew is all I can say! You know a concert is beyond anything you’ve ever experienced when you are conversing with a fellow concertgoer and neither one of you can put into words exactly what you saw, but you know you experienced something that was truly amazing and will never be forgotten. So, it’s official. I still have yet to experience anything like a Sade concert (and I say this having seen A LOT of artists). She still has it and I just hope it’s not another 10 years before I get to have these warm, glowing feelings again. One last thing, Sade looked absolutely stunning! At age 52, she blows a lot of these young girls out the water! Favorite moment: Sade’s introductions of the band were cute and very personal.

Sade Returns to Studio to Complete Long-Awaited Album
Grammy-winning band Sade could formally break their musical silence after 12 years, Billboard reports .
In a recent Billboard cover story, Oscar-winning actor Brad Pitt and French composer and producer Damien Quintard discussed the renovation of the legendary recording facility, Miraval Studios , in Correns, France. Quintard and Bitt named the band the first artist to lay down new vocals at the newly restored recording studio.
“You could feel the love that she and the band had for this place. And when we talked to musicians who came here previously, they all have this special connection with Miraval that can’t really be explained… It’s a dream come true to see this place activate again,” Quintard said.
In terms of a full-length album, Sade — composed of Sade Adu (vocalist), Stuart Matthewman (saxophonist), Andrew Hale (keyboardist) and Paul Spencer Denman (bass guitarist) — have been missing in action since releasing Soldier of Love in February 2010.
Matthewman confirmed to Rated R&B in 2018 that the group was working on a new album. He mentioned “ a bunch of songs ” were in the can, but they wouldn’t be released until the moment felt suitable for them.
“When we’re happy, then we’ll let everyone else hear it. [Sade’s] not interested in fame or any of that [other] stuff. She likes to put out art. So when it’s ready, it will come out,” Matthewman affirmed .
He added , “The record company knows there’s no point in nagging us or giving us deadlines. It doesn’t help the process.” At the time of that interview and this publishing, Sade are still under the roster of their longtime label Epic Records .
In 2020, Rated R&B spoke with Sophie Muller , an acclaimed music video director who has worked with Sade on several videos in the past. She revealed the band could have very well released a new album sometime that year, but the events of the world didn’t make that possible.
“Well, I think it would have been this year,” Muller shared in July 2020. “Of course, there’s been a lot of series of events occurring where things have slowed the world up. Maybe next year.”

While 2021 did not produce a new Sade album, in October 2020, the group spoke to a British GQ Magazine , where they teased recording music at Adu’s home in Gloucestershire.
In the interview, Denman explained why the band was readying This Far , a career-spanning box set collection of their six studio albums that debuted later that fall.
“There wasn’t a specific date in mind when we embarked on the project — just the wish to collect a body of work together on vinyl, some of which wasn’t widely available at the time of release. Box sets sometimes can have a finality attached to them, but for us, the title This Far alludes to a point on the road, not the end of it,” Denman told British GQ ’s Dylan Jones in October 2020.
Sade counts six studio albums, including Lovers Rock and Love Deluxe . The former celebrated its 20th anniversary in November 2020, which Rated R&B highlighted in a retrospective .
Love Deluxe , 4x multi-platinum, will celebrate its 30th anniversary later this fall.
In 2018, Sade recorded two songs for film soundtracks. They shared “ Flower of the Universe ” for Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time and “ The Big Unknown ” for Steve McQueen’s Widows , which starred Viola Davis.
Revisit Sade’s “The Big Unknown” below.

Sade Opens Tour With Sultry Baltimore Show
By Evan Serpick
Evan Serpick
Last night, after Sade had finished slinking around the stage during an amped-up version of “Soldier of Love” – the first song in the first concert of her first North American tour in nearly 10 years – the sold-out crowd at Baltimore’s 1st Mariner’s Arena let her know how much they missed her. For several minutes, the cheers went on, increasing in intensity every time the singer tried to start talking, pushing her back into a silent grin.
“It’s a beautiful thing – the best thing – to be here with you,” she said, once things finally settled down. “You kept the torch burning for all this time.”

In many ways, it seemed that little had changed. When the British-Nigerian singer came onstage, her hair was in the familiar tight ponytail, augmented by bright red lipstick, hoop earrings and a sheer black turtleneck. And that luxurious, smoky voice – the one that earned Sade (the singer, also the name of the band) a reputation as an aural aphrodisiac, the female counterpart to Barry White – is as glorious as ever.

After opening with the hit single from the band’s 2010 album, also called Soldier of Love , Sade announced that she wanted to take things “all the way back to the beginning,” and launched into “Your Love is King,” the jazzy sax-fueled single from their debut album, 1984’s Diamond Life .
The set continued to jump around among the band’s six albums, maintaining a flow that highlighted their well-honed formula of diverse, syncopated percussion, jazzy instrumentation and hard-hitting, passionate lyrics, all held together by that one-in-a-million voice. Gritty, squawking guitars added some welcome bite to tunes like “Love is Found” and “Paradise.”
Photos: Random Notes
The minimalist but elegant set design matched the singer’s graceful, deliberate stage movements. A massive video screen projected videos for each song that acclaimed producer Sophie Muller created for the tour. The lead-up to “Smooth Operator,” which came fairly early in the set, included a highly stylized, narrated noir video that culminated in the singer emerging in an open-collared shirt and gangster vest.

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.
Although several of the videos featured the singer wearing her hair down, it still came as a pleasant surprise when she emerged after a second wardrobe change wearing a white gown with her hair hanging down to her shoulders. It provided a welcome intimacy for the last third of the set, which included some of the band’s biggest hits, including “Sweetest Taboo,” “No Ordinary Love” and “By Your Side.”
For the encore, the band played “Cherish the Day,” a minor hit from 1992’s Love Deluxe – which nonetheless felt like an appropriate closer for the mostly middle-aged fans who had waited so long for the day when Sade would play a show like this again.
Opener John Legend played an appropriately sophisticated set that highlighted his piano prowess, booming baritone, and passionate songs about love and loss (sound familiar?). He closed with “Ordinary People,” the extraordinary track from Legend’s debut album Get Lifted . For a moment, as the crowd sang along to every word, it almost seemed that Legend was the main attraction, but the ovation Sade received when she came onstage made it clear who people had come to see.

Sade Retired to a Reclusive Life After a Legendary Music Career
Jan. 22 2024, Updated 8:15 a.m. ET
At the center of the band, Sade was an incredible singer. She also goes by the name Sade. It's a little confusing, but you'll catch up. The star is a Nigerian-British musician known for her incredible voice.
Her band is applauded for their seamless soul-influenced pop sound and Sade herself had an immense impact on the state of contemporary music. Except, her band went on hiatus in 1996 when she had a child. So, what's going on with Sade and the band now?
What happened to Sade?
After the arrival of her child, Sade took some time to focus on motherhood. The band came back in 1999 and by 2000 they released a brand new album. This new album also came with a new sound as they leaned into pop.
However, their music release schedule sort of fizzled out after that with only one more album 10 years later and a couple of throwaway songs for Disney soundtracks. The constant on-again-off-again of the band wasn't well-received by fans who were desperate to have their favorite band come back.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sade (@sade)
As for Sade, the singer, she didn't let the band's inconsistency stop her. She used the downtime to try her hand at solo projects. During their first hiatus, Sade tried out acting and made her debut with the movie Absolute Beginners .
After the band's first hiatus, Sade truly focused on her child, but still made occasional appearances like when she accepted the recognition of the Order of the British Empire at Buckingham Palace.
Sade also appeared on a compilation CD to honor Fela Kuti where she sang a remix of her song By Your Side . As for her personal life, Sade separated from her child's father, Bob Morgan, around 2010.
What is Sade doing now?
Not much can be said about Sade's current life as not much is known. In 2007, she entered a relationship with Ian Watts who she is believed to still be with. As part of their relationship, she acquired a new child, her stepson named Izaak Theo Adu .
When Izaak came out as a transman, Sade was supportive as he openly spoke about her acceptance. In an Instagram post, accompanying a photo of them together, Izaak wrote: "It’s been a long hard road but We did it!! We are coming home!!!! Thank you for staying by my side these past 6 months Mumma. Thank you for fighting with me to complete the man I am. Thank you for your encouragement when things are hard, for the love you give me. The purest heart. I love you so much. Queen of queen."
Their relationship appears to have remained strong over the years. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE QUEEEEN!! My mumma, words cannot describe how much I love you," he wrote on the singer's 65th birthday. "How thankful I am for all you do for me and those around you. You are a gift to the world. Here’s to you ma."
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Izaak Theo Adu-Watts (@izaaktheo)
Fans were excited to see updated photos of Sade as she rarely makes appearances or does public interviews. "Mother of so many souls that needed her voice to heal. Happy soul Day," wrote model Leyna Bloom on the post.
"Happy blessed birthday to a Queen indeed," wrote a fan. "This year is your year to continue to shine and for you both to have more moments of happiness. Love you both."
